Employment Projections Dashboard

Industry and occupational employment projections are important data items for educators, economic developers, jobseekers and employers seeking forward-looking information concerning jobs in demand for their constituent customers . The Labor Market Information (LMI) Division at DEW has deployed a number of dashboards of pertinent information recently that highlights various employment data elements from the programs we operate . This article highlights the employment projections dashboard located on LMI’s website, SCWorkforceInfo.com .

The dashboards present data from the latest Short-Term, 2-year and Long-Term, 10-year sets of projections for the state overall and at the workforce development area (WDA) level . The 2-year set covers the period 2021-2023 for the state as a whole, while the 10-year sets cover 2018-2028 (state and WDA) and 2020-2030 (state only) . Figure 1 shows the LMI main page with the “Employment Projections” button circled in red .

To get to the dashboards from the main page of the SCWorkforceInfo.com website, choose the “Employment Projections” button on the right side of the page . This leads to the Employment Projections menu page with four primary projections choices—

• Short-Term Occupational

• Long-Term Occupational • Short-Term Industry

• Long-Term Industry

In Figure 2 (shown left) is the landing page for the Short-Term Occupational dashboard .

The table illustrates occupational employment projection details by SOC Level and Code . Base and projection year employment, numeric change, percent change and annual growth rate are displayed .

In addition, the dashboard incorporates data regarding expected job openings with exits, transfers, numeric change and total columns . These measures include 10-year and annual values .

An additional visualization on the dashboard can be seen by clicking the last block at the top of the dashboard, that is labeled “Industry-Occupation Employment Matrix”, as shown to the left in Figure 3 .

This dashboard demonstrates which occupations make up each industry and to what degree in terms of employment . Industry type and sector as well as SOC level and code can be filtered separately to emphasize the finest level of detail available.

The second option on the Employment Projections menu page is Long-Term Occupational projections .

The look of the dashboard is similar to Figure 2’s Short-Term Occupational Projections with the additional filters of area and projections type . Users can choose between two statewide sets of projections, 2018-2028 and 2020-2030, and one at the workforce development area level, 2018-2028 .

This dashboard also includes the industry-occupation matrix as did the Short-Term Occupational dashboard .

Figure 4 shows the dashboard for the third option from the Employment Projections page, Short-Term Industry. The visualization highlights the base and projection year employment by industry sector, ordered by descending employment size. Users can choose between several industry levels .

A second dashboard, in Figure 5, charts the numeric and percent employment change in descending order by industry level .

The Long-Term Industry dashboard, shown in Figure 6, displays a radial chart of annual growth rate by workforce development area as the default view . Also presented is an employment change bar chart with workforce areas arrayed in descending order of change as well as a workforce area map with tool tips of relevant information, displayed when the user hovers over it .

The dashboard includes three other visualizations exhibiting employment levels and change as well as the information in tabular form. These dashboards are a step forward in presenting the wealth of employment projections information in chart and table form. The filters allow users to view the data in as granular a way as is available . Our plans are to continue to deploy more information to the website in more innovative ways moving forward .
