with what my eyes saw, I noticed some brown on its head and chest. But the rest of her was white.

I was able to snap a few quick photos and a video through the glass door while I kept watching her. I didn’t want to look away, I didn’t want to miss a second of simply being fascinated to witness something I knew was a rarity. After she walked away, I went back to work but kept looking out into the back yard, and sure enough, she returned within a half hour, bringing along some of her clan.

Closer to the house this time, I watched her munching the little grass my winter yard offered.

Afterwards, I researched online and learned about white deer and how rare they are. This one wasn’t albino, since she also had some brown. And some online sources call a deer like this piebald.

agic. It’s the stuff of movies, superheroes, tales, books, songs, and stories around a campfire. But I’m not talking about fantasy or make-believe. I mean everyday life, special, real, magical moments that we encounter. We know it when we see, hear, smell, taste, or touch something that is magical. Though it may be hard to describe that magical feeling, we know when something truly resonates with us.

I was walking past my back door a bit ago and glanced out into the back yard.

Something white at the end of the yard and just into the entry of the woods made me pause and focus my eyes. It was something white. I blinked and looked harder, looking all around it for context. It was a white deer.

As I stood staring and holding my breath, not quite mentally connecting

I was so excited and so grateful to have seen her. I felt like I’d been touched by the universe’s magical powers and witnessed something truly special. I floated on that magical feeling all day, and I texted my family, to share the magic with them. I wanted to remember that magical feeling and be able to recall it, both mentally and physically, whenever I wanted to.

The word magic has origins going back a long time ago. The 14th century word “magike” meant the “art of influencing or predicting events and producing marvels using hidden natural forces” and “supernatural art.” Wow! I call myself a creative art dabbler and artist lover, but I’ve never considered someone being an artist of the supernatural.

Have you ever considered the law of attraction? It basically means that “like

attracts like” or that entities with similar energy levels are drawn to each other. Maybe, seeing my white deer was no accident but was meant to be. That’s my theory, anyway.

If you continue that line of philosophy, positive thoughts engender positive results and negative thoughts attract negative outcomes. Have you tried it?

Everyday challenges and obstacles can seem so solid an obstacle, but if we give them substance, aren’t we perpetuating our struggles? Give me a cloudy day, and I’ll still breathe in glorious fresh air, watch a fussy wren on a branch with delight, and admire the dark branches against a light background. It’s all like breathing in sunshine to me.

The days are getting longer. Daylight Saving Time starts on March 14 — yay!

Runaways from Historic Brattonsville

F

rom the very beginning of slavery in America, enslaved people yearned to be free. Despite the dangers, many attempted to escape to the relative freedom of the North. Escape became easier around 1810 with the establishment of the Underground Railroad and during the Civil War when the Union Army began to occupy territory on the periphery of the Confederacy. As escape became easier, greater numbers of enslaved people successfully fled to Canada or free states in the North. 1 Not surprisingly, antebellum newspapers in the South were filled with advertisements offering rewards for runaways. Advertisements such as these, as well as other documentary evidence, indicate that several enslaved people escaped from the Bratton Plantation in present-day McConnells, S.C. The Bratton Plantation was established circa 1766 by William and Martha Bratton but grew to the height of its productivity under the stewardship of their youngest son, John Simpson Bratton Sr. and his wife Harriet Rainey. Like many backcountry planters, the Brattons made most of their fortune off the backs of enslaved people. By 1840 there were 112 enslaved people working on the 3,540-acre Bratton plantation.2

Bob, February 28, 1849:

John S. Bratton Sr.’s son, Samuel Edward Bratton, received an enslaved African American named Bob from his cousin, Robert Gadsden McCaw. Bob was “about six feet high…of light complexion,” and walked with a limp due to a “gun-shot wound.”

On Feb. 28, 1849, Bob escaped from Brattonsville. Early the following month, Samuel placed an advertisement in the Mecklenburg Jeffersonian offering a $25 reward for Bob’s return (Fig. 1).3 Interestingly enough, Bob’s 1849 escape may not have been his first. On Nov. 25, 1848 Robert Gadsden McCaw placed an advertisement in the Lincoln Courier offering a $100 reward for an escaped “negro man named Bob” (Fig 2). The age and physical description of the runaway is very similar to that of the enslaved PAGE 6

Lewis, June, 1851:

On April 27, 1843, John S. Bratton Sr. died unexpectedly and without a will, which left his estate in question. To settle his estate, a Writ of Partition was drafted and submitted to the York District’s Court of Equity on Jan. 3, 1844. His second child, John Simpson

Bratton Jr., received seven enslaved people from his father’s estate, including an African American named Lewis. 5 In June of 1851, Lewis escaped from Brattonsville and sought refuge with a local man named Able Jonas. Four months later, Bratton sued Jonas for “harboring, concealing, and entertaining a runaway slave.”Able Jonas was forced to pay a $200 fine and Lewis was eventually returned to his master. Lewis’ name was included on John S. Bratton Jr.’s Oct. 1852 tax return along with 32 other enslaved people. 7

Henry, June 14, 1851:

Lewis was not the only enslaved person to escape from John S. Bratton Jr. in June of 1851. At some point, John acquired an enslaved African American man named Henry from a local farmer named Christopher Strait. Henry was 35 years old, “five

foot eight or ten inches high,” and wore a “heavy black beard.” On June 14, 1851, Henry escaped from Brattonsville. Fourteen days later, John S. Bratton Jr. placed an advertisement in a local newspaper, the Yorkville Miscellany, offering a $20 reward for Henry’s return (Fig 3). 8 Unfortunately, there is little else known about Henry. His name does not appear on any of the lists of enslaved people belonging to John S. Bratton Jr. prior to 1852. However, the name “Henry” does appear on John S. Bratton Jr.’s October 1852 tax return along with 32 other enslaved people. Henry’s name is one of two names on the list that have been marked out, possibly indicating that he was still unaccounted for.9

James Williams, 1865:

As the Union Army began to occupy territory on the periphery of the

York County’s Entertainingly Informative Magazine Confederacy, thousands of enslaved people escaped their plantations and hurried to Union lines.10 According to Rosa Williams in an 1893 survivor’s pension application, her husband, James Williams, was one of the thousands of enslaved people who took this opportunity to escape.

Rosa, and seven other deponents, attested that James Williams escaped

from Brattonsville in the spring of 1865 and joined the Union Army. 11 James Williams was born circa 1836 on the plantation of James Lowery in present-day York County and, by the eve of the American Civil War, he had been sold to Samuel Rainey Jr., neighbor and brother-in-law of John S. Bratton Jr. Rainey rented James Williams to Bratton for several years

prior to his escape in 1865.12 Upon his return in 1866, Williams became an active civil rights leader in Reconstruction York County and served as the captain of a state-established militia. His activism made him a target and On March 7, 1871, he was murdered by members of the Ku Klux Klan. The following day, the coroner conducted an inquest into Williams’

Non-Covid health matters

I

know it’s hard to believe, but yes, there are still issues beyond Covid-19 that affect each of us. And yes, we know our health matters. Today we’re going to consider some positive things — information that we can adapt to our individual lives, impact and improve our overall health, and do this with only a little effort. That should be positive.

First, since we’re talking about being “positive,” is there a connection between being optimistic and being healthier?

Maybe even living longer? It turns out that there just very well may be an association between having a positive outlook and your chances of achieving “exceptional longevity.” For those who study this area, the definition of this longevity is survival to 85 years or older. There are a lot of factors in play here, including genetics, life-style choices, access to good healthcare, and now it seems, in having a positive outlook on life.

In a recent study including thousands of

individuals, the evidence indicates that a positive attitude is significantly associated with an increased chance of living a long life. But what exactly is a “positive attitude” and can it be measured? Most of us know whether we are generally optimistic or pessimistic. If there is any doubt, ask your “significant other.” Fortunately, we have some guidance here. The LOT-R (Life Orientation Test-Revised) is a brief self-administered questionnaire that presents 12 statements, asking for our agreement or disagreement.

Based on our answers, it is possible to score your relative optimism or pessimism. If interested, check out the LOT-R on the internet, or search https://positivepsychology. com/life-orientation-test-revised/. This is a pretty comprehensive site, allowing you to take the test and score yourself. The question remains as to what to do with this. If we know or learn that we’re basically pessimistic in nature, can that be changed? Can we alter our adaptive view of the world around

us? Yes, we can. (See, now that’s optimism!)

And from recent data, becoming more optimistic will reward us with a longer and hopefully healthier life. Something to think about.

But before we get too excited about living to age 85 and beyond, here are a couple of sobering facts. First, of those Americans 85 years and older, one third of us will be afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease. And one in three seniors will die with some form of dementia. As I said — sobering.

But here is a great opportunity to marshal some optimism as we consider this stark reality. While the risk of developing dementia is significant, we are learning that life-style choices can significantly reduce that risk. We all know that smoking, excessive alcohol, a sedentary life-style, and obesity are all risk factors for developing dementia, as well as a lot of other problems. But we now have a growing body of evidence that indicates our dietary choic-

es can have a positive effect on our brains.

Specifically, a group of substances — the flavonoids — when consumed on a regular basis, appear to slow the decline in cognitive function, potentially forestalling the development of full-blown dementia. Flavonoids are potent antioxidants, scavenging cellular break-down products that cause damage in critical areas of our body, including our brain. Foods rich in these flavonoids include citrus fruits, berries, pears, apples, strawberries, and red wine (in moderation).

Pretty simple, right? These are good choices and should be a part of our everyday diet. It may require a change in our eating habits, but the evidence supporting this continues to grow. And remember, as someone in our clinic frequently reminds us: “If it comes in a can, in a bag, or through a fast-food window, it’s gonna get ya.” Words to live by.

yc magazine... York County’s Entertainingly Informative Magazine in the air. Hmm. That’s a lot of you. And the number of us who keep track of our daily physical activity is rapidly growing. But just what good does this activity do for us? And how are we to use it to impact our health if we can?

First, we know that increasing our physical activity produces a lot of positive outcomes — improved cardiovascular health, better control of blood pressure and blood sugar, less pain with osteoarthritis, better sleep. The list goes on. But how much physical activity is necessary to achieve these benefits? Most experts would recommend at least 20-30 minutes of brisk walking a day. Now with the advent of these “smart watches,” we are able to quantify just exactly how much physical activity (steps taken) we’re actually getting in a day. But how many steps is enough? And how fast should be walking?

A study published in JAMA gives us some guidance. Prior to this, a popular goal of 10,000 steps a day was the supposed “gold standard.” This wasn’t based on any research, just a number that seemed like a good target. Here’s what these authors found: • Increasing our number of steps each day can decrease our risk of all-cause-mortality and some types of cancer.

• Greater than 12,000 steps a day affords the greatest benefit, with a 65% reduction in chance of death compared to those of us who only take 4,000 or less steps.

• Step intensity (speed) has no effect on these benefits. It looks like it’s only going to be the amount of activity we get. Good news for those of us who don’t move as fast as we used to.

Thanks to these researchers, we’re getting some clarity regarding our daily goals of physical activity. This is important stuff, and something we should pay attention to.

So, get moving! It’s a positive step in the right direction. yc

E

very holiday comes with icons, and Saint Patrick’s Day brings to mind some of the first images of spring: green colors, shamrocks, and of course, Saint Patrick himself.

Probably the most familiar symbol is indeed the shamrock, or clover. There are numerous species of clovers, many of which are classified in the scientific genus Trifolium, which literally means “three leaves.” Of course, it is possible to find four-leafed clovers, and to do so is considered good luck. While luck probably has little to do with it, there is an element of chance. It seems that four-leafed clovers are actually an abnormal form of the three-leafed varietPAGE 10

ies. Whether they arise as genetic mutations or environmental anomalies is a subject of debate, but if the first three leaves of a clover represent hope, faith, and love, then a fourth leaf surely represents luck!

From a purely biological point of view, I think we are “lucky” to have all of the clovers and other legumes. That’s right; clovers are in the legume, or bean family. In fact, many other plants, including peanuts, mimosa and locust tress, even kudzu and wisteria vines… over 18,000 plant species belong to the legume family. These plants may look very different, but a close inspection of their flowers, and of course their

“fruits” (bean pods), reveal their close relationship.

The fact is that we could not exist without the all-important legume family. Sure, we know that plants provide food for animals and humans, and plants release oxygen into the atmosphere as they conduct photosynthesis.

All green plants perform this very vital function that makes other life possible on planet earth. However, clovers and their kin are important for yet another reason, and it relates to proteins.

Proteins are essential to the structure and function of all living things.

Hair, skin, muscle, and many tissues of the body are made of protein. Perhaps more importantly, almost every single chemical reaction in your body requires enzymes to function properly.

All enzymes are proteins. Some hormones are proteins. Proteins are paramount, and all proteins have a very important element in common…nitrogen. Nitrogen is crucial to the structure of all proteins, but how does it get into living things? Fortunately, there is an abundance of nitrogen gas in the atmosphere. In fact, the earth’s atmosphere is 78% nitrogen (also 21% oxygen, and 1% carbon dioxide and other gases). So, all we have to do is breathe in the nitrogen we need, right? Well, actually, it does not work that way. We do breathe in nitrogen, but it does not form proteins in the gaseous form. So the question remains, how does the all important nitrogen get incorporated into the proteins of living things?

The answer goes back to our plant friends, the legumes. Plants of the bean family have nodules in their root sys-

tems that harbor special types of bacteria. These bacteria have the ability to draw nitrogen from the air and “fix” it into solid form (humans use a similar but synthetic process to manufacture nitrogen fertilizers). The resulting nitrates can then be used by the plants as part of their essential nutrient intake.

When animals eat legume plants, they ingest the nitrates needed for their own protein metabolism, and so the nitrogen is passed through the food web.

When plants and animals die, nitrates are released back into the soil during decomposition. These nitrates are acted upon by yet another type of bacteria that transform the nitrogen to gaseous form and return it to the atmosphere, thus completing the Nitrogen Cycle.

The relationship of nitrogen-fixing bacteria and legume plants is a wonderful example of mutualism, a type of symbiosis where the association between two species works for the benefit of both.

Now you understand why we are fortunate to have legumes. Without them and their bacterial counterparts, nitrogen could not be fixed in solid form and made available to living systems.

So, the next time you are searching for a four-leafed clover, take time to be thankful for the three-leaved ones as well. If you ask me, all legumes are lucky. yc Dr. Steven E. here has been a lot of “noise” (i.e., COVID-19/vaccination, politics, economy, Valentine’s Day, etc.) going through our country, and I suspect it has been difficult to find the truth in all the surrounding events. We’ve read quotes “the truth will set you free” or “truth be told” but how through all the noise do we hear the “truth?” Personally, how often do you find truth in yourself being burdened by the noise of life?

“Be still,” clearing our mind and know the “truth.” The second part of the phrase is what will be addressed — “what is knowing the truth?” There are many phrases regarding “truth,” such as “The truth will set you free,” or “All truth passes through three stages. First, it is ridiculed. Second, it is violently opposed. Third, it is accepted as being self-evident,” or “All truths are easy to understand once they are discovered; the point is to discover them,” or finally, “Everyone’s perception is truth.”

Thus, addressing the truth is “knowing the truth” — what is truth? Simply put, the “truth” is within you, meaning the answer to the questions of truth is based on you (vs outside of you). Truth is being genuine and congruent (matching what is inside/outside of you) with self. Some of you struggle with the truth due to placating/appeasing, being nonconfrontational, avoiding, ignoring/ denying/running and other defense mechanisms that hide your own truth. Hence, the truth is never discovered or found due to being distracted from the outside and/or the levels of your own uneasiness/ anxiety.

Truth is sometimes based on “scripts” (i.e., roles, expectations, boundaries, repetitive beliefs and etc.) or schemas (a “thinking” map). Our U.S. Constitution has the word truth, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and

the pursuit of Happiness.” Truth can come in many forms such as religion, culture, family, politics, etc. As a nation, truth has evolved over the period of time.

However, the “real truth” comes from and within you. Be aware, you’re the only one that lives in your “truths” 24/7. Therefore, how does one find/discover the truth within self? Being mindful and self-aware are keys to discovering/ finding the honest truth. The following are some thoughts.

• Get support – surround yourself with positive network of friends/family to strengthen the truth • Check-in with yourself – mindfulness, awareness, being still, and etc.

• What brings you joy?

• What gifts do you bring?

• How is life calling you?

• What’s memorable about you?

• What’s missing from your life?

• If money wasn’t an issue, what would you do with your time?

• What verb best describes you?

• What problem do you want to solve?

• What movie character would you most want to be like?

• What book title best describes the life you’d like to lead?

• What was your favorite thing to do as a kid?

• Why are you doing what you’re currently doing?

• What do you wish you had more time to do?

• What kind of person do you want to be in five years?

• What did your 15 year-old self imagine you’d be doing right now?

• When was the last time you felt “lit up?”

• When do you feel the most like yourself?

• How do you know when you’re being completely authentic? When did you last feel that way?

• What’s something you want to do that’s impossible? What would need to change to make it possible?

• What makes you lose track of time?

Letting go (Greek word for forgive, aphiemi) – forgiveness/grace for yourself • Remove the labels – take the negative life stories you have carried over a period of time and discard • Be authentic and honest with self • Be natural; allow the truth to come to you • Be a “critical thinker,” use the Socratic method in developing truth

Question the Question • “Why do you think that I asked that question?”

• “Why was that question important?”

• “Which of your questions turned out to be the most useful?”

Land planarians, aka hammerhead or flatworms

I

have had a number of calls over the past couple of months about hammerhead worms.

During the winter months where garden questions slow down, it was surprisingly curious to receive so many calls about the same creature when I usually only get one or two calls each year about these. Each caller wanted to “report” the presPAGE 12

ence of these worms to authorities.

Apparently, word has been spreading via social media about these foreign, invasive worms that need to be reported.

Truth be told, several species have been in the United States for over 100 years. The most common species seen in the Southeast is Bipalium kewense, the arrow-

head flatworm. It can grow up to 10 inches long, with a light-brown body with one to five dark, longitudinal stripes running its length.

The head is often shovel-shaped and may have a black collar behind the head. It covers itself with a mucus and glides along a slime trail, much like a slug, on tiny hairs that act like a million feet.

The good news is that it is predaceous and eats slugs, snails, and the larvae of several harmful insects such as white grubs. They are typically found under rocks or logs, or other dark, moist areas during the day and do most of their hunting prey at night. An exception is when we have a lot of rain and there is plenty of moisture about,

you may see them during the day moving across a driveway or sidewalk — much like you see earthworms on pavement when the soil is very wet.

They reproduce by either laying egg sacs, or more often through fragmentation, where they pull away from their posterior end to form another worm which is immediately mobile and will form a head usually within a week to 10 days. Flatworms do not have eyes, and do not have a brain. They find prey by the use of chemoreceptors in the head. The flatworm subdues its prey within its mucus that holds it as it slurps up the prey with a mouth located in the middle of the underside of its body. Some other species produce tetrodotoxin which is the same toxic substance produced by pufferfish. This protects them from being eaten by anything else, except another land planarian. The arrowhead flatworm is a non-toxic species and has been reported to be eaten by salaman-

ders. The fact that flatworms are cannibalistic makes them their own worst enemy.

The bad news is they also eat earthworms. There have been reports of these devastating earthworm farms, but given the fact that numerous species of flatworms have already been established for many years in the state, they are likely not a major concern as no direct evidence of their impact has been seen in the environment to indicate earthworm populations have diminished. In fact, most people do not realize that many of our most prevalent earthworms are introductions from Europe and Asia, and they may pose more of a threat to our native earthworm species than land planarians do. yc Paul Thompson is a Horticulture Agent with the Clemson Extension Service. o, you and your pal have decided to play in a disc golf doubles event.

That’s great. You’ve probably got everything from extra discs to a jumbo bag of trail mix already covered for the big day.

But have you thought about your doubles team name? Yeah, I know; it doesn’t sound very important. But believe me, you’ll want to spend some time crafting a good doubles team name or you might end up with a lame one that you and your partner regret for years to come.

Did you know that Doubles is fun?

Though taken seriously by anyone who competes in disc golf doubles events, doubles is, by nature, a more laid-back, fun format for disc golf. I’ll PAGE 14

explain why: First off, you’re paired with a teammate, so right away the isolated, youversus-the-course mentality of singles is gone. And often that teammate is a friend, which makes the round even more enjoyable.

Plus, there’s less pressure in doubles.

Usually, you play the best shot between the two of you. That means you’ve got two chances at each shot, so if you mess up, your teammate can still bail you out. This means better scores and the opportunity to go for more aggressive shots than you would during a typical singles round.

Singles disc golf is already fun, but doubles disc golf seems to magnify the best, fun-filled aspects of the game for an entire round. That’s why doubles

is so beloved and why it’s developed a more informal, party atmosphere.

Don’t get me wrong, every team wants to win, but it’s also about who can have the best time while doing it. That goes for everything involving doubles, to the no-holds-bar play, to the occasional silly costumes worn, to the funny team names — which in my opinion is one of the most important aspects of doubles.

Tips on creating a Good Doubles name:

I believe a proper Doubles Name should illicit a chuckle. Some folks are blessed with quick wit and can conjure up hilarious names without a second thought. Sometimes that works for me, but often I must cull through a bunch

of lame names before I find the right one.

Get out some paper

First off, you and your doubles partner should commit to at least one name brainstorming session prior to the event. List names together over some beers or share what you got after individual sessions.

You’ll be amazed at how many names you’ll come up with. Now, most of your names will be garbage, but go ahead and write them down. By writing them down, I believe, you remove them from your head so that you can generate more — hopefully better — names.

Here are some ways to get started:

• Create a pun describing your team

York County’s Entertainingly Informative Magazine from disc golf terminology like fairway, bogey, par, etc. However, if the best you can come up with is “Birdie Boys” or the “Bogey Men,” keep trying. You can do better. I saw a great one, “Herniated Discs,” from last year’s USDGC Doubles Leaderboard.

• Utilize Current Events / History / Pop culture: Put that useless knowledge floating in your head to good use.

• Have some fun with your or your teammate’s name. Some people have some wild last names that just beg to be used for doubles.

• Draw from the names of celebrities or famous disc golfers.

• Or, just find some funny word or short phrase. One of my personal best doubles names was “Courtesy Flush.”

And, “Buddy System” was another good one used by a team from last year’s USDGC Doubles event.

A PDGA.com preview of the 2018 Am World Doubles events ranked some of the best doubles names. Examples included Jurassic Parked and The Bogey Men (though I’d give the latter one a B - minus).

My friends Matt and Chris decided upon Deuce Bags over Tools of Grass Destruction for a doubles event a few years ago. Personally, I would’ve gone

Cross these off your list • Avoid sexually themed names like “Putt Pirates.” These just make everyone feel awkward, especially the tournament director who’d have to call your

name out loud if you won the event.

• Avoid arcane/inside joke names.

Service A Helping Hand for the Community

The road to financial stability

U

nited Way of York County has a Bold Goal to help 3,000 York County families achieve financial stability by 2030.

You may remember our January article

about outcomes (what we hope to achieve in providing these services) and outputs (the actions/items that contribute to achieving an outcome). You will see us reporting such outputs as the number or percent of

participants enrolled in job skills training; clients who complete GED, certificate, and/ or degree programs; participants who complete financial literacy courses; clients who signed up for income maintenance program(s); and families who take advantage of the EITC. Each output is directly related to an outcome.

We have short-term, intermediate, and long-term outcomes we hope to achieve. As a first step, we are focusing this year on our short-term outcomes. These include new knowledge or skills about financial stability, including job-hunting, soft skills, awareness of supportive programs, and knowledge of effective financial practices.

Each of these short-term outcomes, though they may seem simple, help to prepare our families for the road towards financial stability. Below, we will review how our partners are doing towards our short-term outcomes by presenting our Quarter 2 impact numbers.

Impact Area: Financial Literacy

Our goal, in this first phase of funding, for our Financial Literacy partners is to track the number of participants who increase their knowledge of financial literacy practices and implement sound financial practices.

Our Financial Literacy partners report the following as part of their Q2 reports.

Goal 1: Increase the number of participants who expand their knowledge of financial literacy practices and implement sound financial practices.

Reporting Requirements (at least one required): · Percent who take advantage of financial literacy courses or coaching: 21% · Percent who complete financial literacy courses or coaching programs: 6% · Percent who signed up for income maintenance programs: 5% · Percent of families who grow savings/ assets by decreasing debt, increasing asset ownership, improving credit score and/or creating and following a budget.: 46% We know families who have financial literacy skills will be able to make wise financial choices. By linking families to products, education, and services, they will start to build the financial tools and resources they need to make wise financial choices and progress down the path to financial stability.

We are already seeing results with 46% of participants who are growing savings/assets by decreasing debt, increasing asset ownerPAGE 16

ship, improving credit score and/or creating and following a budget. We are excited to see York County families making progress towards financial stability.

Impact Area: Underemployment

Our goal with Underemployment is to count the number of participants who are enrolled in job training programs. Our Underemployment partners report the following data as part of their Quarter 2 Reports: Goal 1: Increase the number of participants enrolled in job training programs Reporting Requirements (at least one required): · Percent of participants who are enrolled in and/or complete job training program(s) for jobs available in the local market: 37% · Percent enrolled in a G.E.D., vocational degree, certificate, or credential program and/or earn relevant licenses, certificate, degree, or credential: 29% · Percent of individuals served who gained employment with a livable wage and/or increased their wages: 20% · Percent of individuals who complete an internship or apprenticeship with a goal of full employment: 14% Individuals who are working, but do not make enough to support their families will benefit from programs that connect them with the knowledge and skills to start on a sustainable career path and gain employment with a livable wage or increase their wages.

37% of clients in our underemployment programs are working on skills and abilities that will help them get a better paying job in the local market. Another 29% are taking classes to earn an educational degree to help them to meet their goals.

Summary

Our second quarter reporting has shown we are on the right track to addressing poverty and financial stability in York County.

We must understand that it is a long road to stability, with many stops along the way. By meeting our clients at the starting line, serving our Target Population, and ensuring they can access the resources they need, we can confidently continue our work knowing these families are on their way to being financially stable by 2030 — one small step at a time. yc Summersby Okey is the Director of Collective Impact. Connections Helping Hands

Listen to understand, not respond

I

n my typical style, I was perusing social media and found a really interesting lady who is all about government and politics and how it all works, etc. You know, the total opposite of me. What caught my eye is she was answering questions from her followers and one of the questions involved the relationship between a girl and her father. She asked if they could disagree on politics and continue to have the same relationship they’ve had all their lives. Seriously. She asked this question and needed a serious answer.

I can’t even remember what the social media guru said, something like, “Of course you can! Your relationship is based on so much more than just the way you vote!

This shouldn’t destroy your relationship!”

I summarized for you. Honestly, it is killing me to see relationships ruined over disagreements on opinions. And that’s what most of it is — opinions. Your opinion, your Dad’s opinion. Not the basis of your entire relationship over the past however many years.

One of the bits of advice I heard, and I totally fail at applying to myself, but I will

Listen to understand means acknowledge the person’s opinion and points, consider them and decide if they match your beliefs or not. Even if they don’t, give the person respect and appreciation for their willingness to share with you. Listening to respond is negating everything the person is saying and forming your rebuttable before they even speak the full opinion. You are just gearing up to shoot down whatever comes out of their mouth. Sadly, I probably fall into the latter a little too much.

Thanks to a year-long pandemic keeping so many of us at home with the TV going 24/7, people have enjoyed constant access to talking heads with no reprieve. It’s easy to form rock solid opinions and refuse to budge when you are confined to home and listening to one viewpoint over and over.

One excellent observation this social media personality made is you really need to stop and do your research at some point.

You can’t depend on the media to spoon

feed you complete information with no bias. Didn’t your mama tell you there are always two sides to every story? Same goes for opinions. Just because you heard it on TV or read it on the internet does not mean it is accurate, or presented correctly, or even explained correctly. Having an opinion is easy. Defending that opinion is a lot easier when you have done a little research and know what you are talking about.

One more thing I want to say — just because you are 100% dedicated to your opinion and you have your facts all lined up in a row, it still doesn’t mean you are going to change anyone’s mind. I’m not even sure that should be your goal. Instead of accepting Mission Impossible: Opinion Redirect, consider just sharing information and letting them make their own informed decision. And when you leave, you still remain friends. If you two insist on discussing differing opinions, make a pact that it won’t be all you discuss, and you’ll leave as friends. Because honestly, what is the point in losing the ones you love over an opinion.

You don’t have to agree with him, or like what he likes, or support what he supports.

But you should still want to love him, for all the things that make him who he is. His love for you, the way he cares for you and shows his love, his sense of humor, how he is a great Pawpaw to your kids, etc etc. Love him. Not his opinions, but him. And your relationship should hopefully be ok.

On an unrelated note, I have really enjoyed hearing from readers as you share what your One Little Word is for 2021. I’ve seen some really good ones! I even had someone share her word with me in the form of a handmade mask! I love it! I hope you are doing good about keeping up with your word and noticing the changes in your own life as you bring your attention to this one area for a year. The pandemic is still rearing its ugly head, but you can still make positive changes and make a great impact here in York County and beyond. I

want to tell you about a great upcoming wildlife photography opportunity, but first, I need to tell you about a previous pilgrimage I made to one of my favorite places to photograph, Cades Cove, Tennessee. For those not familiar with Cades Cove, it is a mountain valley surrounded by the Great Smoky Mountain National Park. The Cove, as it’s commonly referred to, is perhaps, the premiere East Coast location for viewing and photographing wildlife such as black bear, whitetail deer, turkey, songbirds, birds of prey, and much, much more.

An 11-mile paved loop around the perimeter of the Cove makes it easy for guests of the Park to view wildlife. I have visited the Cove frequently; this particular pilgrimage to the Cove was in 2004. As I drove into the Cove, I parked and prepared to set off on foot. I was immediately surrounded by a loud buzzing sound. The sound was so loud, and so enveloping, that it put me in mind of the ominous noises and creatures in the 1995 Stephen King horror miniseries, The Langoliers. With a watchful eye for wildlife, ominous or not, I began my hike only to be stopped in mid-stride by a fairly large, flying, screaming demon landing in my beard. Now, it only took a second or two for me extricate this thing from my beard, but it seemed like a long second or PAGE 18

two. When I was finally able to see the demon in my hand, it turned out to be a cicada. But, not just any cicada, this cicada was a member of Brood X or The Great Eastern Brood. And, he had as many as 1.5 million, per acre, of his cicada friends with him; I gingerly released him back into the wild.

Cicadas are categorized as either being an annual cicada, which we here in the South encounter yearly, or what I encountered in the Cove, a periodical cicada. Periodical cicada life cycles run in either thirteen or seventeen-year periods. There are fifteen different periodical cicada broods in the United States. Twelve of those broods have a 13-year-life cycle. The other three broods, including Brood X, have a 17-year life cycle. The periodical cicada spends long years underground, feeding on sap from tree roots and emerging in spring when soil temperatures reach approximately 64 degrees Fahrenheit. Once they emerge, the cicadas attach themselves to a tree or other solid surface, molt their old exoskeleton, breed, lay eggs and die. There are physical differences between annual and periodical cicadas. Perhaps the most notable difference is that the annual cicadas have dark colored eyes, while the periodical cicadas have red eyes. As a sidenote, York County will not see a periodical cicada hatch until

2024 when Brood XIX emerges.

So, why am I doing an overview of cicadas and what do they have to do with photography? Well, it’s been seventeen years and Brood X returns to Cades Cove this spring. The trillions of emerging cicadas will draw an increased number of black bear to the Cove. Cicada, like many insects, are high in protein and the opportunistic bears will gorge on this rare opportunity. And not just more bear will come to the Cove, bigger bears will be drawn there as well. As it was explained to me by one of the Park Service wildlife biologists, the protein source will concentrate the bears, more specifically, there will be more breeding-age female bears in the Cove. This in turn will draw more mature big male bears. When I was in the Cove during the last Brood X emergence, for multiple days, I watched fields that would have as many as nine individual bears in an open field at one time and the bears were active all day long. The jump in protein that the cicada emergence provides has lasting impacts. The sow bear will go into pregnancy in better condition and the rate of twin and triplet cubs will increase.

The shed cicada exoskeletons are high in nitrogen, therefore, over time, the vegetation gets a fertilizer boast which benefits carnivores, omnivores and herbivores alike.

If you’re interested in photographically taking advantage of this unique concentration of bears, I encourage you to start researching the Cove and planning your trip now. The Cove is the most visited location in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. Crowds in the Cove can be huge, traffic on the eleven-mile one-way loop can be very, very, slow, and some people can exhibit dangerous behavior when it comes to interacting, or not-interacting, with wildlife. Trip planning resources for information about the Cove are easily found online.

If you do go to the Cove during the Brood X emergence, be aware that a cicada produces a noise that can reach 120 decibels.

ach year brings between four and seven eclipses to planet Earth, including both lunar and solar, although they might be partial. Year 2021 has four eclipses — two solar eclipses and two lunar eclipses.

Eclipses happen when Earth, Moon, and Sun line up. The plane of the path Earth makes as it orbits the Sun is called the ecliptic. As Earth orbits the Sun, the Moon orbits Earth in a slightly different plane, inclined 5 degrees to the ecliptic, so the three bodies usually don’t line up precisely.

When the Moon is full or new and near the ecliptic, an eclipse can occur. The Moon and Sun are each about ½ degree wide as viewed from Earth, so the Moon usually falls sufficiently above or below the ecliptic that there is no eclipse.

A lunar eclipse occurs whenever Earth comes between the Moon and the Sun. The Moon’s phase is full. The shadow of Earth crosses the face of the Moon, dimming it. Some sunlight passes through Earth’s atmosphere before striking the Moon. Our atmosphere filters out most of the blue light, causing the Moon’s surface to appear rusty or red. Everyone on the

night side of the Earth when the eclipse occurs can see it. Lunar eclipses can be total or partial. There is also a penumbral eclipse when only the outer portion of Earth’s shadow dims the Moon.

A solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes directly between the Sun and Earth. The Moon is new. Because the Sun is approximately 400 times wider than the Moon and also 400 times farther away, both the Sun and Moon appear equally wide as seen from Earth, allowing one to just cover each other. This allows for spectacular total solar eclipses, when the disk of the Moon covers the Sun, revealing the normally too dim to be seen Sun’s beautiful outer atmosphere known as the corona.

Solar eclipses can also be total or partial. There is also an annular eclipse. This is the rarest type of eclipse, but nowhere near as spectacular as a total solar eclipse.

“Annular” means “ring-like.” All the conditions of a total solar eclipse are met, except the Moon is too far away from Earth to completely cover the Sun, resulting in a ring of light around the darkened Moon.

The solar corona is not visible during an annular eclipse. A hybrid eclipse happens

when the eclipse is annular for some but total for others.

On Dec. 4, 2021, there will be a total solar eclipse. Unfortunately, the path of totality will be limited to Antarctica and the southern Atlantic Ocean. So, for us in the United States, not even a partial eclipse will be visible.

There is an annular solar eclipse visible from the United States on June 10. The path of annularity for this eclipse is confined to parts of Russia, western Greenland, and northern Canada. A partial eclipse will be visible early in the morning of June 10 in the northeastern United States. Here in the Charlotte area, the Sun rises with the eclipse already nearly concluded. You’ll need a low east-northeastern horizon with no clouds. The Sun will rise with the eclipse already in progress at 6:08 a.m. and be finished by 6:25 a.m. Only a small part of the Sun will be covered. You will need special glasses to observe the Sun safely or even notice the eclipse.

There are two lunar eclipses visible for us this year. On May 26, there is a Super Total Lunar Eclipse. The “super” comes from the fact that the Moon will be near

its closest point to Earth, making it appear slightly larger than usual. I predict this eclipse will be hyped as the “Super Blood Flower Moon.” The entire eclipse will be visible only to those on the West Coast. For us in York County, the Moon will set before totality begins and we will see only a partial lunar eclipse from 5:44 a.m. until moonset at 6:16 a.m.

On November 19, there is a partial lunar Eclipse. That doesn’t sound like much, but while this eclipse officially is a partial eclipse because the Moon doesn’t completely cross into Earth’s shadow, in actuality over 95% of the Moon will be covered, so during mid-eclipse, it will appear total. All North America will observe this eclipse. For us in the Carolina Piedmont, maximum eclipse will be around 4:02 a.m., but the partial phase begins at 2:18 a.m. and ends at 5:47 a.m. yc Carole Holmberg is the Planetarium Manager at the Museum of York County. The Local Racing Scene

Wesley Page: The go-to guy in racing

B

ack in the January issue I touched on three Rock Hill businessmen, Steve Huffstetler, Ryan Young and Wesley Page. Time for a flashback look at Page, where he started, where he is and where he’s going with John Page Racing.

We have to go back a ways and look at why and how he started in this very competitive and complex sport. It seems the challenges, the progress and the determination to stay on top is what drives Wes day in and day out.

Wesley’s first introduction to racing came at Lancaster Speedway and his journey is still going strong. So strong if fact, his services are requested virtually every day, whether it’s selling parts out of his business, building race cars, or answering questions from old and new customers.

His journey started at, of all places, Daytona Speedway. At age 13, you could find Wes high in the stands, a spotter during the then, Dash Series. “My dad was an engine builder for the series, operating out of his shop in Rock Hill. So, I was always around not only the shop but at the races with dad.” I asked him what he remembers about those early days and if he helped out in the shop. “I knew at an early age I was not destined to be an engine guy like dad. My involvement there was to disassemble engines, wash parts and, of course, sweep the floors.

Watching him build winning engines did give me a little knowledge, but that’s not where I wanted to go.” That changed somewhat when, with a big Dash race scheduled for Daytona, his dad, John, came down sick with an engine in the shop needing to run at that race, but

not put together. “Dad told me I had to finish the assembly, something I had never done. Having no choice, I finished putting that engine together. Come race time the car sat on the pole, maybe I did something right. While leading, the motor started to smoke, not a good sign, but low and behold, it held out, winning the race. Standing in Victory Lane, at 16 years old, is something I will never forget, and something else -- that was the first and last engine I ever put together”.

Helpful in his learning process, Wes did some cart driving early on, and with that knowledge, he started learning how to set up his car for different conditions, again, helpful to him later in his career.

By age eighteen, Wesley, building his resume, became a Crew Chief for BJ Mackey. Come the 2000/2001 season, he was moving up as a crew chief on an ASA asphalt team. 2002 saw a move to a crew chief in the UARA Series, the same position in the Hooters Pro Cup in 2003.

Moving on to 2004 Wes joined a NASCAR Truck team, finally going full time in 2005 on a Pro Cup team.

At the same time as his crew chief positions, Wesley was building racing shocks for various teams as well as working for his dad’s John Page Racing.

In 2014 Wes was now working full time at Page Racing, a now-thriving parts business. And in 2017, with John retiring, Wes bought out his dad and is sole owner of the business.

John Page Racing today is actually four different areas, all within the same building in Rock Hill. Wes has one of the biggest parts houses in the area, specializing in dirt racing parts, although

Next is WP Racing Shocks, (Wesley Page) which builds racing shocks for teams all around the country. “We can build any custom shock for any application on any track in the country and have many teams with championships to our credit.” Locally at tracks like Lancaster, Cherokee, and Carolina, possibly half the field of cars can be spotted with WP decals on their cars. A true testament to the quality and winning ways coming out of the Rock hill shop.

John Page Racing is also a supplier of Longhorn Race Car chassis, one of the top brands of chassis for dirt car racers.

“We can supply a bare chassis, all the way to building a complete race car for a customer right here in our shop. With a direct association to Longhorn, I have access to the newest and best parts from these guys.”

The fourth part of the business is consulting. “We get call’s every day from customers around the country, asking for setup recommendations, what type shock will work on a certain track, different questions about Longhorn chassis and what we recommend, the list goes on and on.” But Wes tries to go one

step further in helping new guys in the sport learn the basics, even if they are not a customer. “I am more than willing to help anyone I can. If a new team is struggling and can’t find the handle on a car, I’ll help them figure out the problem their having. If these guys aren’t helped, they might just quit and that does not help racing. Yes, they may become a customer, but I believe in helping out wherever I can when possible.

My shop is also directly involved in fielding a dirt car for guys over the years.

“Currently I am partnered with Charles Ellis on a Crate car. And the big news is I’ll also be fielding a partial schedule with a Super Late Model with standout driver Ben Watkins behind the wheel in 2011. We’re very excited about this deal coming together, Ben has many wins under his belt, and we expect great things for the coming season.

Searching and seizing 4th amendment answers

I

am going to let you in on a secret known by police and criminal defense attorneys: criminals know their constitutional rights much better than the average citizen does. You can probably figure out why that is. The one constitutional right, and all its nuances, that criminals seem to understand the best is the 4 th amendment, search and seizure: The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized.

I am going to give examples of knowing how the 4th amendment works might save some agony in the life of the ordinary, non-criminal citizen. But first some background.

You will note that the amendment only proscribes unreasonable searches and seizures and requires a warrant be obtained for such.

It does not proscribe reasonable searches and seizures. That is, there are times when the police can search you or seize your property without a warrant. For example, if the police see a marijuana cigarette tucked behind your ear, they can seize both the marijuana and your ear (i.e., they can arrest you) without a warrant.

As part of the arrest process they can also search you further for additional contraband and hidden weapons, all without a warrant.

That is part of what is known as the “plain view” doctrine. The Supreme Court has long held that no warrant is necessary to seize contraband that is in plain view. But now our example of how the 4th amendment may come into play in ordinary life.

Let’s say the police pull you over in broad daylight for running a red light and there is no indication that

alcohol is involved. The officer can ask to see your license and registration but cannot order you out of your car and begin a search. That would violate the 4th amendment.

But let’s say that you have a gun holster that you left lying in plain view on the back seat. There’s no gun in it because the holster is a gift you were taking to your mother. The presence of the empty holster gives the officer reasonable belief that you are armed and dangerous and you can be ordered out of the car and patted down for weapons. This is what is known as a “Terry” frisk from the case of State v. Terry, 392 U.S. 1 (1968).

If you have a friend or family member in law enforcement, ask him or her to demonstrate for you a “Terry” frisk. It is quite intrusive.

If, during the pat down, the officer discovers a half full flask of moonshine, it can be seized, and not only will you be charged with the traffic violation, but also with an open container violation and possession of an illegal substance.

Let’s say you are pulled over for a regular traffic check, there is no holster in the back seat, and you give the officer no other reason to believe you are armed and dangerous and there is no contraband in plain view. The officer asks if he can search your car. You say, “sure” and the officer finds a half smoked marijuana cigarette that your brother-in-law must have left when he borrowed your car last week. Can the officer arrest you for possession of marijuana? The answer is, “yes.”

The police do not need a warrant to search if they have your consent to search. That is true of both your house, your person, and your car.

So, most lawyers will tell you that even if you are absolutely positive that there is nothing illegal to be found, never consent to a search.

You have every right to tell the officer, “No, you cannot conduct a search.”

Let me change the facts once

more. Let’s say that the officer pulls you over for a seat belt violation and there is nothing which gives the officer a reasonable belief that you are armed and dangerous.

The officer asks if he or she can search your car. You say “sure” and the search reveals your brother-inlaw’s marijuana cigarette. Can the officer arrest you for possession of marijuana?

The answer is “yes.” The officer can arrest you but your lawyer will get the charges dismissed and the evidence thrown out and you will have a case for false arrest because the seat belt law, §56-5-6540 (D), South Carolina Code of Laws, says, “A vehicle driver, or occupant in a vehicle must not be searched, nor may consent to search be request-

ed by a law enforcement officer, solely because of a violation of this section.” If you are stopped for a seat belt violation the officer cannot ask to search you or your car.

If he does ask and even though you consent, anything found during the search would be inadmissible evidence.

Articulate Creativity

Strong, concise writing leans heavily on vocabulary mastery

T

he work you post or publish likely went through many changes or drafts before you deemed it worthy. This column is no exception.

One reason writing is an ongoing process is the work required to be clear, engaging, and entertaining.

How do you write meaningful sentences and messages without exceeding the word count? One way is to re-read your work. Proofreading provides an opportunity to remove double words or sentences that you rewrote without deleting the original. It also lets you consider every word.

Occasionally my clients are concerned that they aren’t reaching their word count and want to add words for the sake of length. Little could be more destructive to your writing.

Every word should be necessary. Every element of the piece must be rel-

evant to the topic. If you work to add words, put equal effort into research.

Add information that strengthens your final composition. Whether you are writing an article, blog post, or novel, consider your readers. They will read only as long as they remain interested.

Concision requires rewriting

In the first draft, work to get your ideas on paper. Don’t worry about the words. Simply capture your ideas. Give little consideration to the length of your work. If you research, save time and energy by limiting your fact seeking to the space you have to write and elaborate. Then take time to peruse your work.

You’ll see words that should be changed with every readthrough. Perhaps you overuse “there is” or “it is.”

nyms should be explained. Always consider your reader when you write. What do they want to read or need to know to appreciate your skill and the time they took to read it?

Make a conscious effort every time you read your work to determine the necessity of every word, sentence, and paragraph. When you are unsure, read the original sentence aloud, then read the shortened option aloud. After some practice, you’ll begin to notice unnecessary words. Irrelevant sentences and paragraphs will seem distracting.

Choice increases understanding

Adverbs such as very and really diminish the words they modify instead of creating a stronger image. Consider these words when looking for accuracy and concision: very small vs. miniscule really good vs. delicious very nice vs. welcoming Note: When choosing words from a dictionary or thesaurus, use words that are consistent with the character’s or narrator’s voice.

Paint a picture

In descriptions, choose vivid colors: The lion’s eyes appeared to be amber.

In settings, describe the trees, bushes, or birds when relevant. Did lightning strike a man under a water oak or a tall pine? Describe flowers in the lush garden. Did the character enjoy the songbirds or did a mockingbird make incessant noise?

Is the shanty dank? Does the wind seem to sway the only place Bobby had ever called home?

Does your character have a shock of hair or a comb-over?

Your readers envision “the baby tugged at the mother’s top” differently than “the baby was hungry.” Notice that both the description and the action verb strengthen the sentence.

Emotions are another area where accurate words can make a difference.

How does a girl smitten with her first boyfriend look and act? “Her cheeks flushed pink after he kissed her forehead.” Did she smile? Whisper? Blink?

A reference book overflowing with words that show emotion is The Emotions Thesaurus by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi. The authors have written several other thesauri on topics of emotional wounds, negative and positive traits, and urban and rural settings. Word lovers could spend days reading and digesting the vocabulary within these books.

This last resource is also fun. The Social Security Administration offers a database you can search to find the top boys’ and girls’ names as far back as the 1880s. Details can be defined nationwide or by decade, state, territories, and change in popularity. You can easily access it here: www.ssa.gov/ oact/babynames/ England offers a similar database through www.ons.gov.uk/ that includes names from the 19th century forward. I found the UK database most easily accessible by using a search engine to find “the most popular boys’ and/or girls’ names in (year).

An online search provides names in other countries as well.

Writing concisely and accurately makes your work easier to read and more engaging. Adding the research to ensure your descriptions are accurate in use, time, place, and your voice draws readers who want to imagine themselves in the scene or with a character. Trotting Along

L

ong before automobiles, a horse and buggy was the common mode of transportation. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, this four wheeled two or four passenger vehicle came in a variety of types to suit the needs of the owner. Local residents could purchase a buggy in the 1850s at Wheeler’s Carriage Emporium which later became the Yorkville Carriage Factory and Carolina Buggy Company from 1886 until it closed in 1899. Or visit the Holler and Anderson Buggy Company in 1886, later renamed the Rock Hill Buggy Company, until 1916 when it was reorganized as the Anderson Motor Company. By 1910 automobiles were being embraced in the US and the use of horse drawn buggies began to decline although wagons were still used to transport heavy loads. yc Nancy Sambets is the Director of Archives at the Historical Center of York County in York. A love letter to Snowpeak USA

B

efore you begin reading this article, know that in no way have I been paid off by Snowpeak USA to shill their gear with the gusto of a sidewalk prophet; I’m doing all of this for free. If they read this article and decide they do want to pay me money, or even better, give me gear in exchange for extolling their virtues...I will sell out and take that deal faster than you can say “domo arigato.” Also, I cannot afford most of the gear I’m about to talk about; I doubt most of the people reading this can either. But in much the same way that car guys will judge the benefits of a Ferrari compared to a McLaren as if they could afford a car that costs half a million dollars, I’m presenting Snowpeak to give an idea of just what is out there.

Japan has been a fascinating country to the western world ever since we knew they existed. Renowned for relentlessly pursuing continual refinement in an attempt to reach perfection, whether in samurai swords or Toyota trucks, there’s a reputation for reliability, durability, and functionality. But also, there is sushi, and the hand-drawn animation of Hayao Miyazaki; beautiful expressions of art and design that capture imaginations and make you think “what if”. So, have you ever wondered, “What would camping equipment look like if the Japanese turned that same attention to detail to tents and stoves, etc.?” Wonder no more. After years of Snowpeak USA only carrying a smattering of their full line, we finally have access to everything available in Japan -- and it’s a doozy of a lineup.

Where to start, where to start. First, let’s cover what Snowpeak is best known for in the States: ultralight backpacking gear. Beautifully crafted titanium stoves, pots, mugs, and yes, chopsticks that were made to beautifully nest together in a compact and versatile package. Their LiteMax stove for example, weighs an astonishing 2oz and collapses down to a laughably small package. Don’t worry, the gram counting doesn’t stop there. Want a folding titanium fork that only weigh 1/2oz? They’ve got you covered. Titanium plates, bowls, and a curiously named “Kuwagata”; a titanium tool meant for puncturing your fuel tank so you can recycle it once it’s empty. And while they carry some backpacking gear like solo tents and PAGE 28

sleeping bags, I don’t find them intriguing enough to wax poetic about.

The real interesting stuff is when you move to their base camping or overlanding series of gear. Their philosophy of use is so radically different than almost everything I’ve ever seen in the US, it’s shocking. There is an attention to camping furniture unrivaled by any other gear company I’ve come across. Not only does it tick all the functional boxes: collapses into compact carrying packages, durable enough that it won’t give out after a single trip etc., it also looks like something straight out of a 19th century African Safari. There are nearly a dozen different table options alone; low tables, high tables, side tables, backpacking tables. And the chairs! Folding futons that double as a cot for when you’re ready for bed after a long night lounging by the campfire. As you go through and see the examples they give of how they think their products will be used, it isn’t the solitary adventurer you see so often depicted by The North Face or Patagonia; it’s friends and family, 8-plus people, gathered around a table sharing a meal.

(Yes, I know. There’s a pandemic on, but it must stop at some point, right?).

Meals, and meal prep, are where Snowpeak is in a league all its own. Let’s start with how you transport your camp kitchen from home to vehicle to campsite. For years, I’ve used Rubbermaid, Tupperware containers, ditty bags, and stuff sacks.

Snowpeak has modular storage containers that you can transform into a stacking cubby system to sort and access your gear once you arrive. What kind of things could you fit in those containers? How about, more important out west but still viable for wilderness areas, their collapsible fire pits or grills? And don’t forget all the accessories, like the tables, stands, and attachments you can add to those to complete your camping kitchen. Once you have the coals stoked nice and hot, you have a wide array of cast iron dutch ovens to cook whatever delicacy you brought along for the trip.

I’ve only scratched the surface of what Snowpeak has to offer. I didn’t even touch on the hand forged tent stakes available in lengths from 8 to 20 inches, or the hammer used to pound them into the ground with the replaceable copper head to reduce the amount of shock you feel doing it. Never

I’m fond of saying about certain things that “the dream is better than the reality”; that’s how I feel about most of their equipment. I have a feeling that sleeping inside one of their $1,800 tents probably isn’t all that different than the second-hand REI tent I’ve beat up in campgrounds across the southeast for the last 10 years. But I also know there are certain pieces of gear that just make you happy to use and show off. So, if Uncle Sam decided to send you back some tax money this year, go to www.snowpeak.com and

see if there’s anything that catches your interest, even if it is just a pair of collapsible titanium chopsticks.

ot everyone has chosen my career path, so I thought I would spare you the expense of continuous education and behavior studies. I wanted to share a list of things that dogs don’t like that humans do. Some of these tips will explain why your canine companion turns his head away, barks in certain situations or averts his eyes and body from you. It will bring meaning to your dog’s behavior and allow you to see life through their eyes instead of your own.

Dogs do not like to be interrupted during mealtime. In all fairness, do you?

I hear so many people say, “Yeah, I admit, I used to pick up his dog food while he was eating to prove that I was the Alpha.” That dominance-based training technique is extremely outdated. Training dogs is about building a relationship based on trust, love and respect. You want a dog

to work with you because you’re a team, not because you have threatened them or flexed bigger in front of him. There is no reason to feel the need to protect your food, or to hurry up and eat before someone gets it. The same rule is to be followed for a bone or treat. Set your dog up for success and create a quiet area in your home where they eat in peace. Bon appetit!

Dogs do not like when humans argue in front of, or near them.

The escalation in negative tones and energy levels make dogs extremely uncomfortable. They often bark to try and break up the argument. Some dogs will go and take a valuable item of yours to get your attention during the argument to distract or redirect you to stop the arguing. They may run and hide. Some dogs will lunge; they are letting you know, loud and clear, they are not comfortable with the situation. You

can’t fault them for that, I hate confrontations myself. I suggest you quit arguing and walk the dog as a family with a smile on everyone’s faces and “reset.” Everyone wins!

Dogs do not like when humans rush them during potty time.

They are wired to explore and sniff and smell what’s happened since the last time they were outside. 60% of the dog’s brain is controlled by the nose. Some better than others, and more so for some breeds. Dogs have impeccable noses, give them a few minutes to check things out and investigate. We all need a few minutes. I speak the truth. Could you imagine entering your bathroom, and a family member is annoyingly knocking and yelling your name on your bathroom door repeatedly? Let your dog relieve himself in peace and then call him in when he is finished his official rounds.

Dogs do not like when humans hug them.

I know we all want to show our love and affection towards our dogs, however, we as humans like to hug, dogs do not. It makes them feel trapped and threatened. Most dogs tolerate it, but that doesn’t mean they enjoy it. Dogs wouldn’t naturally hug one another; they show affection in other ways.

They make lick you, or groom you, to show their appreciation for you. If you’re lucky, they may even bring you back something they have hunted or found in the backyard.

Dogs want to make us proud. Every dog should have a little job around the house to keep them mentally stimulated, connected to the family and to make themselves feel proud. Whether it’s putting all their toys back in the basket, helping you load the dishwasher, or fetching you a cold beer, it’s amazing how useful your dog could be. am writing this during February, and this year marks the 57th year the U.S. commemorates Heart Month. Lyndon B. Johnson issued the proclamation in 1964. Heart disease is the number one killer in the United States. In most cases heart disease can be prevented with lifestyle changes – eating a healthy diet, getting at least 150 minutes of physical activity a week, avoiding smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, controlling blood cholesterol and hypertension, and controlling blood sugar.

Of course, there are many different traditions for monthly, weekly, and daily recognitions for commemorations. American Heart Month and National Nutrition Month are important and touted to educate the public and to bring about awareness and hopefully encourage subsequent change for improved health.

This brings me to my objective for this month’s column. Let me give you some background: I and my Extension co-workers all work within designated programs areas, of which mine is the Rural Health and Nutrition Program Team. There are roughly 30 of us team members across the state who have some form of academic background in health, including Registered Dietitians, health educators, health science backgrounds, nurses, etc.

We are providing disease management and prevention programs, currently via Zoom due to the COVID pandemic. We often partner within our Program Team with one another and assist with classes, co-facilitate, etc. Many of our classes require several months of commitment from participants. These are basically mini-courses that take several months to complete, including diabetes management, hypertension management, and diabetes prevention. A very important factor that participants learn through taking these particular classes is how diabetes and heart disease relate to one another.

For those folks managing diabetes, they are not just keeping track of their blood sugar and hemoglobin A1c (which is a major part of diabetes management), they have to monitor their heart health which includes monitoring and managing blood pressure and an annual lipid panel – including cholesterol, triglycerides, low density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL). The American Diabetes Association and the American Heart Association have partnered to offer education about the relationship between diabetes and heart disease and how to prevent or manage these debilitating and often life-threatening diseases. Our Program Team is partnering with the American Diabetes Association to offer short, educational opportunities for anyone – even if you are simply interested in this topic or if it is your family member who has one or both diabetes and heart disease.

The Clemson Rural Health and Nutrition Extension Program team is pleased to offer free, one-hour webinars aimed at educating the public about Type 2 Diabetes and the link between Type 2 Diabetes and Heart Disease. We have many, many dates and times available throughout the year and the webinars will be delivered through Clemson University Extension Service by our Rural Health and Nutrition Extension Agents.

These sessions are supported by the American Diabetes Association with a grant aimed at reaching as many people with Type 2 Diabetes as we can in South Carolina and beyond.

pring is in the air and ‘tis the season for puppies and kittens! The Christmas pets are now nearly six months old and are starting to develop their own personalities. Young animals are much like young children — fun and rewarding, but also a lot of work and expensive! Here are a few tips to get your puppy or kitten started off on the right paw for routine healthcare.

Young animals receive vaccinations monthly until they are about 4 months old.

Core immunizations for puppies include the DHPP and Rabies vaccines. Kittens receive the FVRCP and Rabies vaccines as part of their “core” series. Your veterinarian may advise other vaccines for your pet depending on their age, lifestyle, and other risk factors.

For dogs, these vaccines commonly include Bordetella, Leptospirosis, and Canine Influenza. Kittens are tested for the Feline Leukemia and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus and often receive the FELV vaccine to prevent this deadly virus.

Regular parasite testing and prevention is an often overlooked and extremely important part of keeping your family healthy.

Many parasites that affect pets can be transmitted to humans – these are called Zoonotic Diseases. Animals may be infected with intestinal parasites while they are still developing or very early in life through contaminated soil or their mother’s milk. Reg-

ular stool checks with your veterinarian and frequent dewormings are key to preventing these pesky parasites. Heartworms are parasites transmitted by mosquitoes that affect dogs and cats. Starting your pet on regular heartworm prevention early in life and continuing this year-round for their entire life is recommended. There is nothing worse than bringing home a sweet little furball and finding out a few months later that your whole house is infested with fleas, so don’t skip out on regular flea and tick prevention. There are many safe and effective parasite preventions available to meet your needs. Talk to your veterinarian about what is right for your pet and your family.

Nutrition is extremely important and can be quite confusing. We are what we eat, right? Humans would go crazy eating the same thing day after day but keeping your pet’s diet consistent is one of the most important things you can do for their digestive tract! Select a good quality dry kibble made by a reputable brand and supplement canned food if desired. Smaller animals need more frequent meals to prevent low blood sugar, or hypoglycemia. As your pet grows, you can reduce the frequency of the feedings, but personally, I like to feed two meals a day. With so many options to choose from, how does one possibly select an appropriate diet? My recommendation is to ask your

vet what they feed their own pet. If it is good enough for their pet, then it is most likely good enough for yours! Don’t forget to select a food that is made for your pet’s life stage and stick with it. Changing diets, even between different flavors of the same brand, will most always result in an upset tummy.

Food sensitivities and allergies are rare in youngsters, so unique protein or grain free diets are not necessary. Recent research has implicated grain free diets with the development of heart disease, so it is best to avoid them unless your pet has been diagnosed with a true grain intolerance.

Early socialization and training are so important for preventing behavior problems, phobias, and situations that may result in loss of the bond with your pet. Kittens are rock stars when it comes to potty training, but puppies are a lot more work! Consistency and setting reasonable expectations are key to potty training a puppy. Puppies and kittens go through several periods where they experience fear to things that are seemingly “no big deal.” It is very important to support your pet during these times and use rewards (usually treats work best) to turn the scary situation into a fun one. Last, but not least, help reduce pet overpopulation by having your pet spayed or neutered. In 2020, South Carolina ranked 16th in the nation for pet shelter deaths. This is not a statistic that we should be proud of; however, the numbers improved by 37% from the previous year with nearly 80% of animals being saved. While rescue groups and volunteers work tirelessly to improve these statistics, we can each do our part to reduce these numbers by not littering. Talk to your veterinarian about any concerns you may have and remember that you may need to schedule your pet’s surgery a few months in advance due to the COVID pandemic.

Most importantly, enjoy these times that you have with your new pet…no matter how difficult or frustrating they may be. Family caregivers: You are not alone

D

ementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, is a common cause of morbidity and mortality in the aging population. Most people with dementia are living with one or two additional chronic health conditions. COVID-19 is caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus. Severe illness of COVID-19 predominantly occurs in older people and in individuals with underlying medical comorbidities.

People with dementia are twice as likely to get COVID — this is a time to draw attention to the many challenges facing family caregivers. There is a special emphasis on the need for all of us to help family caregivers protect their health to have a more satisfying life and be better able to provide their loved one with the best care possible.

According to the National Alliance for Caregiving and AARP:

The typical family caregiver is a 46-yearold woman with some college education who works and spends more than 20 hours per week caring for her mother who lives nearby. The average length of caregiving is 4.3 years. Many caregivers fulfill dual roles, are married or living with a partner (62%), and most have worked and managed caregiving responsibilities at the same time (74%). Almost 60% of all caregivers have had to adjust their work life, such as reporting late to work or giving up work entirely. Most caregivers (89%) are helping relatives. Nearly 80% of care recipients are over 50 with the other 20% 18-49. Caregivers who help someone age 50 or older say the most common health problems the person they care for has are diabetes, cancer, and heart disease. One quarter of caregivers helping someone age 50 or older reports the person they care for is suffer-

Family caregivers now encompass more than one in five Americans.

As a family caregiver…

• Be good to yourself. You are doing an extremely hard job and you deserve some quality time, just for you. When people offer to help, accept the offer, and suggest specific things they can do.

• Take charge of your life, and do not let your loved one’s illness or disability always take center stage. Know you need to take care of your own physical and mental health to be able to help your loved one.

• Educate yourself about your loved one’s condition or disability. Information is empowering.

• Take actions to safeguard your own physical health. Eat nutritious, healthy meals. Get regular exercise. Get regular health screenings and a flu shot annually.

• Watch out for signs for depression, and do not delay in getting professional help when you need it. Ask a friend or family member for help with caregiving when you need a break. Talk to someone you trust about the challenges of caregiving. Contact an organization or agency for information or help on caregiving. Take time to do something that is good for you emotionally or something you enjoy. Seek support from other caregivers. Join a support group to discuss family caregiving.

Bring Storytime Home: Dial-A-Story Do you want to hear a story from YCL staff at any time? Call the Library’s Dial-a-Story phone line at (803) 620-8585. This new service is an alternative to face-to-face story times. YCL staff members will record content for adults, teens, and children to listen to from anywhere using a landline or mobile device. Content will be updated weekly and will include stories, songs, poetry, jokes and riddles, history tidbits, trivia, and more.

Ebenezer Park: More space for more fun

n January, this column explored the new Field Day Park in Lake Wylie. Next on our park tour is the newly expanded Ebenezer Park, also part of York County’s park system. The extensive expansion project began in November of 2019 and is wrapping up now. When I talked to Park Superintendent Pat Morrison recently about the project, he summed it up nicely with “This summer should be a blast!”

New spaces outside and in The focal point is the new 10,000 sq. ft. semicircular pier which encloses the swimming area. The pier is almost 800 feet long with five covered areas featuring picnic tables and double-sided swings. It also includes fishing areas that jut out over the water, so anglers have an ideal place to fish.

The beach area was expanded and is more than three times larger with plenty of sand for fun on the water’s edge. And 2,200 cu. yds. of silt were dredged from the swimming area, giving swimmers of all ages a nice spot to escape the summer heat. Additional picnic pads were added around the water, along with an arbor entry.

A multipurpose event building provides a venue for concerts and movies in the park.

Its large barn doors open to the great lawn and doors on the side and rear pivot 90 degrees to allow dramatic views of the lake and provide continuous air flow through the structure.

The building is complete with a small kitchen and restrooms, and it can be rented for special events. The lawn in front of the event building invites activities like tossing a football, kicking a soccer ball or throwing a Frisbee.

Additional new amenities at the expanded park include a kayak, paddle board and canoe launch, a beach volleyball court and a small basketball court.

Access and connectivity For those launching larger watercraft, the new boat slips will help eliminate some congestion of loading and unloading. The redesigned boat parking lot with slanted spaces will allow guests who are towing trailers easier access to parking.

Features to enhance the park’s connectivity were not overlooked. New sidewalks

and trails connect all areas of the park — a great benefit for the community. And a new boardwalk leading to the Rangers Station was added for easier access by campers during check in and for those visiting the park store.

The park expansion cost $4.6 million and was funded by hospitality tax funds. Leitner Construction of Rock Hill was in charge of construction, with ADC Engineering in Greenville, S.C responsible for the design work.

Morrison said, “ADC offered a unique combination of civil engineering, structural engineering, and landscape architecture services. They were also the masterminds behind other park projects across the state like Colonial Lake in Charleston, Northbridge Park in West Ashley and Mount Pleasant Memorial Waterfront Park.”

With all the excitement about the new park amenities, parking is likely to be at a premium, especially on the weekends, so it’s suggested that you arrive early. All parking is first come first serve, and once the parking is full, guests will be turned around at the gate. Parking fees are charged Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and the

park is open daylight to dark, year-round.

As this issue of YC Magazine goes to press, no dates have been released on when the new amenities will open to the public, but it should be soon. Stay tuned to Facebook and Instagram for opening dates as well as programming news like movies in the park and concerts.
