you’re a disc golf fan like me, you’re in luck.

I’ve virtually toured some of the most beautiful disc golf courses recently, watching the pro tour online. The video coverage and commentary has come a long way in just the last four years, and I’m enjoying weekend indoor breaks from the heat, watching some of my favorite players.

There’s an interesting psychological link pertaining to humans boosting our own self-esteem vicariously through the success of others. And even more powerfully important to us is our sense of belonging.

So, associating with sports teams or athletes helps give us a boost in additional ways, not to mention the thrill of the competition.

Now that September is here, it’s time to start getting excited about the US Disc Golf Championship (USDGC). Held in our own backyard on the Gold Course at Winthrop

I

ran across an interesting statistic recently. About 64% of Americans are sports fans, with 42% claiming to be casual fans and 22% claiming avid fan status. Just over six people out of 10 love sports so much, they consider themselves a fan. As I write this, I can hear the Seinfeld character David Puddy saying in his iconic voice, “You gotta support the team,” in the hockey game episode where he paints his face to support his team, the NJ Devils.

With COVID-19’s abrupt halt to many aspects of life, we’re all searching for breaks in our already stressful lives. Recreation, amusement, arts, and sports are all ways to help buoy our spirits, especially to help for the long haul until science and solutions can catch up. With team sports either modified or canceled outright for many months now and the foreseeable future, you might be searching for sports fixes online. And if

University’s Coliseum/Lake campus, it will be held Oct. 7-10, 2020. Like other events during COVID-19, this year will be different, with no live spectators. But, fear not!

There will be multiple ways to enjoy live coverage for a small fee. More details can be found on page 16 in this issue.

The best disc golf players from all over the globe will be coming to our neighborhood to compete. The Gold Course is York County’s “Brigadoon” — it only exists for a handful of days before the guide and outof-bound ropes are removed. And for the first time in 20 years, the Women’s National Championship returns to the Winthrop course and will be played alongside the USDGC. The USDGC was always one of Bill’s and my favorite events of the year. We loved disc golf so much, we built our own disc golf course in our back yard. A few photos

of the course have even been featured on YC Magazine covers in the past. The 18hole course crisscrosses to maximize technical paths through the trees, while using only four catchers.

Just before building the course, we had stumbled on something funny relating to YC Magazine and one of my page layouts, with a column break appearing to combine the words “flying” and “possum.”

We discovered it through an email chain afterwards, so when we were brainstorming for course names, I suggested “Flying Possum,” which stuck. The course has its very own cool logo, created by a very dear artist friend of ours here in York County (thanks, Stephen!) of a smirking possum with wings.

Ferguson vs. Ferguson

O

n October 7, 1780, Maj. Patrick “Bulldog” Ferguson and the 1,105 Loyalists under his command found themselves surrounded by a formidable Patriot force consisting of militia regiments from Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and the “Over Mountain Settlements” in present-day Tennessee.

Maj. Ferguson had no way of knowing that one of these Virginia militiamen, a free African American boy who coincidentally shared his last name, was present at one of his first major battles and was about to bear witness to his last.

Andrew Ferguson was born to free parents in Dinwiddie County Virginia circa 1765 and was drafted into Patriot service around 1777. That very same year, the Virginia government passed a resolution that allowed free African American men to serve as soldiers. Andrew Ferguson was one of approximately 1,000 free black men of military age who resided in Virginia at

the time. The fact that Andrew was “drafted” does not necessarily mean that he was

forced to serve against his will. In the 18th century, a draftee was simply a soldier who

enlisted to fulfill the draft quota that was mandated by a colonial government. Two weeks prior to being drafted, Andrew Ferguson and his father, Andrew Peeleg (aka.

Andrew Ferguson Sr.), were taken prisoner by the British. After suffering much abuse from their captors, including being whipped “with the cat of nine tails,” Andrew and his father escaped and enlisted in the Patriot army under General Nathanael Greene. It is highly likely that Andrew and his father enlisted as a direct result of the mistreatment that they had endured at the hands of their British captors.

According to his federal pension application, for which he applied in 1838, Andrew served at the Battle of Brandywine on September 11, 1777. It was at this battle that Patrick Ferguson and his small experimental rifle regiment first saw action.

Patrick Ferguson was not only a wonderful marksman and accomplished military leader, but he was also a brilliant inventor.

He created one of the first breech-loading rifles. The “Ferguson Breech-Loading Rifle” made it possible for soldiers to reload very quickly from a prone position.

It was at the Battle of Brandywine that Patrick Ferguson, armed with his breech-loading rifle, famously encountered George Washington. From a concealed position in the forest, Patrick Ferguson, the best shot in the British Army, had the Commander-In-Chief of the entire Continental Army in his sights. Thankfully, Ferguson decided not to shoot because

After the Battle of Brandywine, Andrew Ferguson served in the battles of Musgrove’s Mill, Ninety-Six, and Camden before finally moving on to Kings Mountain, where only one of the two Fergusons were destined to survive. The battle commenced at 3 p.m., though Andrew noted that he “got to that battle when it was partly over.”

The Patriots quickly surrounded Maj. Ferguson and his Loyalists. Astride his horse and clad in a checkered hunting shirt, The Bulldog made a prime target for Patriot marksmen. Patrick Ferguson was struck with 8-10 musket balls and thrown from his saddle. Altogether, the Battle of Kings Mountain lasted about an hour.

Despite the battle’s brevity, Andrew was forever scarred by what he witnessed at Kings Mountain and briefly entertained the idea of desertion. He made the decision to remain in the Patriot army and served with distinction at the battles of Cowpens, Guilford Courthouse, and Eutaw Springs.

Following the war, Andrew returned home

to Dinwiddie County, Va. before eventually migrating west to Indiana. Unfortunately, he had sustained several war injuries that pained him for the rest of his life. He was injured in the leg at the Battle of Camden and sustained a head wound at Guilford Courthouse. An army surgeon treated the latter by placing a silver plate in Andrew’s head after relieving the pressure in his skull by using a technique known as trepanation. Fortunately, Andrew was able to draw a small pension for his service in the army for a few years prior to his death.

The interconnected lives of Andrew and Patrick Ferguson make for an interesting tale. Two men, from very different backgrounds, with the same last name, on opposing sides of the American Revolution find themselves present at the two battles that bookended Major Patrick Ferguson’s military career during the American Revolution. yc Zach Lemhouse is the resident historian for the Culture and Heritage Museums of York County and the Director of the Southern Revolutionary War Institute. Survival of the fittest?

“Look not to Nature for solace; you will find none.” – a quote sometimes attributed to Charles Darwin

I

am not sure that the above “quote” was ever stated by Darwin, and I usually do not agree with it. Indeed, I find comfort and serenity in a walk in the woods or along a beach. At the same time, I realize that the natural world is full of competition, aggression, and death, and sometimes, it just does not seem “fair.”

Who among us has not watched a nature documentary where the timid deer is being relentlessly chased by a ravenous pack of wolves? Likewise, we hope above all hope that the “poor” rabbit will make it to its den before being snatched skyward by the pursuing hawk. Actually, our sympathies should be extended to the hungry predators, as many of them have only a 10% suc-

cess rate at capturing prey.

Charles Darwin did use the phrase “survival of the fittest,” although it was likely not his own. Herbert Spencer, an economist, was probably the first to use the phrase, but it is said that he was inspired by reading Darwin’s work. Regardless of its origins, the expression “survival of the fittest” has still been misunderstood and misapplied to our own society to justify many human atrocities.

In biology, “fitness” does not pertain exclusively to survival, but more accurately to reproductive success. In a previous YC Magazine column entitled “What Good Is It?” I stated, “Once we understand that every species…is adapted to survive and reproduce, the most appropriate question is not “What good is it,” but “How good is it?”

The “purpose” of every organism is to get its genes into the next generation. Those that are best adapted to their environment

Somewhere along the way, the concept of “survival of the fittest” was rephrased “only the strong survive.” This is quite inaccurate, and allow me to share a personal experience that demonstrates why this is not a valid interpretation.

Years ago, my family took a summer vacation to visit relatives in Ohio. As we were driving along the interstate through West Virginia, my daughter asked, “Dad, what is this insect on the windshield?” I looked to see a katydid gripping the outside of the glass. We were moving at 65 miles per hour up and down the hills and around the mountains, and we were amazed that the katydid could maintain its hold on the windshield. After about 45 minutes, we stopped to refuel the car. My wife and daughter went inside the convenience store while I pumped the gasoline. I kept looking through the windows towards the front of the car to watch the katydid, still clinging to the glass. After a couple of minutes, the insect found the strength to launch itself upward and take flight. I watched as it flew triumphantly towards a grassy field, only to be intercepted by a mockingbird that zoomed in from the right, snapping up the insect in its beak, never missing a wingbeat, and continuing out of sight. I stood there for a moment, stunned at what I had just seen. I must admit that I felt sorry for the katydid.

I shared that story not because it was unique – such predator/prey encounters occur countless times each day – but because it illustrates the point that “only the

strong survive” is simply not true. I would argue that a three-inch katydid that can hold its own in near hurricane-force winds for 45 minutes is definitely “strong.” However, after such a grueling ordeal the ill-fated insect still found itself in the wrong place at the wrong time. Sometimes, random chance prevails, and “strength” has nothing to do with it.

An even more profound example is the fate of the dinosaurs. Here we have a very successful and “fit” group of animals that dominated the planet for over 150 million years. Few people would doubt that tyrannosaurs (the family that includes the infamous T-rex) were “strong.” Yet, strength alone was not enough to help to the tyrannosaurs and other dinosaurs at ground-zero when a 10-mile wide asteroid struck the Yucatan Peninsula some 65 million years ago. The global effects following the impact were enough to finish off the dinosaurs and 70% of all life on earth.

Survival of the fittest? Yes, it is a sound phrase, at least in its correct context. Will I continue to look to Nature for solace?

Law Navigating The Law

T

he South Carolina Supreme Court has delivered some interesting decisions this year and one concerns a case that originated right here in York County. It is a criminal case and involves the law of burglary. The South Carolina Code, Section 16-11-311, defines burglary as follows: A person is guilty of burglary… if the person enters a dwelling without consent and with intent to commit a crime in the dwelling. Then there are aggravating factors that make the crime first degree burglary. First degree burglary can carry a life sentence but not less than 15 years. The aggravating factors include being armed with a deadly weapon, causing physical injury to someone not participating in the crime, using or threatening the use of a deadly weapon, displaying what is or appears to be a knife, pistol, revolver, rifle, shotgun, machine gun, or other firearm; or the burglary is committed by a person with a prior record of two or more convictions for burglary or housebreaking or a combination of both; or the entering or remaining occurs in the nighttime.

In the York County case, State of South Carolina v. John Kenneth Massey, Jr. (Appellate Case No: 2019-000842, Opinion Filed June 10, 2020), the aggravating factor was that the burglary occurred in

Depositphotos.com the nighttime. There was really no dispute as to who committed the crime and that it occurred in the nighttime. The issue in the case was that the structure that was burgled is an outbuilding situated about 45 feet from the dwelling. Questions were also raised about the outbuilding not being on the same parcel of land as the dwelling and the person whose stuff was stolen did not own either parcel.

Before the jury was sworn in, defense counsel made a motion to “quash” (yes, that is a word frequently used in criminal law and you can think of it as “squash”) the indictment for first degree burglary as the outbuilding is not appurtenant to the victim’s residence, it is on a separate parcel of land not owned by the victim, and the building was used for a business which is not related to a residence. The trial court agreed and granted the motion to quash.

The State appealed and the South Carolina Court of Appeals affirmed the decision of the trial judge. The State appealed again to the South Carolina Supreme Court, who saw it differently.

Our criminal code defines ‘dwelling’ for purposes of a burglary as any house, outhouse, apartment, shed or box in which there sleeps a proprietor, tenant, watchman, laborer, etc., and all houses, out-

houses, buildings and sheds which are within two hundred yards of it and which are appurtenant to it. The Supreme Court noted that the outbuilding was somewhat used for a business purpose but it was primarily used like a garage where the victim and his father stored personal items like four wheelers (one of which was stolen), boats, beds and tools. The Supreme Court referenced a number of prior decisions where it was held that a blended commercial-residential use of an outbuilding does not defeat a charge of first degree burglary.

The Supreme Court also noted that though the outbuilding was on a parcel separate from the one in which the victim dwelt, the crime of burglary is one against possession and not ownership. Who holds title to the land is not an issue in a burglary charge.

The question is who possesses it.

The main question left in this case is whether or not the outbuilding is appurtenant to the dwelling. The fact that it is not attached is of no matter because our law includes structures that are up to 200 yards from the dwelling. The Court noted that “appurtenant,” “has multiple meanings depending on the context and the statutory language...” Thus, the Court declined to opine as to whether the outbuilding was appurtenant to the dwelling without

a complete record, but it did indicate that the test for appurtenancy is one of use and proximity.

So, the case has been remanded to the trial court for further proceedings. Like most Supreme Court decisions remanding cases to trial courts for further proceedings, this decision does not give the trial judge specific instructions. But the gist seems to me to be that the trial judge is to ignore that the building is on a separate parcel, ignore who owns the building, ignore that the building was used for both commercial and residential purposes, but take more evidence on the issue of appurtenance, that is, the use and proximity of the building. We know that the building was 45 feet from the dwelling and that seems to me to be fairly proximate. We also know that the building was used to store household stuff and that seems to me to make the use clear.

Personally, I think Massey is going to stand trial for first degree burglary. But, that’s why we have juries. We let juries decide these types of questions. Growing pains: There is such a thing Our six-year-old wakes us up almost every night with leg pains. Her grandmother says it’s “growing pains” and I say there’s no such thing. Can you settle this for us? And tell us what to do?

W

ell, her grandmother might be right. There is such a thing as growing pains, and it’s pretty common. It’s a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning that there are no specific physical findings or diagnostic tests and you have to exclude other, more serious causes for those pains.

Fortunately, the process of exclusion can be straightforward.

First, we need to define this problem as best we can, understanding there is no established consensus. What most experts (pediatricians, pediatric orthopedists, and pediatric rheumatologists) agree on are the following points:

• Growing pains awaken children from sleep at night or from naps.

• There are no findings of any musculoskeletal problems, and the physical exam is normal.

• They occur most commonly in preschool and school-aged children (ages 2-12 years).

• Up to 20% of children can be affected, and this is more common in girls than boys.

• Growing pains are benign and usually resolve within a year or two of onset.

• Pain occurs primarily in the legs and is bilateral.

• The pain is described as being deep, and localized to the thigh or calf.

• The pain can be severe enough to cause the child to cry.

• Symptom-free periods are common, and can last for days, weeks, or even months.

• Pain is usually relieved by massage, heat, or ibuprofen/acetaminophen.

• Up to one third of children with growing pains will also have recurrent headaches and/or abdominal pain.

• There is frequently a family history of growing pains.

With these factors in mind, making the diagnosis of growing pains is almost always a “clinical diagnosis,” meaning it’s based on a good history and physical exam. Here’s what we should see: • Pain usually occurs late in the day or awakens the child from sleep.

• The pain is not related to any joint.

• It is frequently worsened by increased physical activity during the day.

• Most experts would expect the pain to occur at least once a month for at least three months.

• The physical exam is completely normal.

That’s the key point here — the physical exam must be normal. Any of the following findings will prompt further studies: • Unexplained fever, weight loss, or lack of energy/activity.

• Decreased range of motion of any joint, joint swelling, or tenderness directly over a bone.

• Abnormal and unusual skin changes.

• A limp or signs of gait instability.

• Swollen lymph nodes.

• Pain during the day.

• Unilateral limb pain.

• Arm pain only, with no leg pain.

If any of these are present, the diagnosis of “growing pains” is not appropriate. The list of other, more serious possibilities is long, and beyond the scope of what we’re considering here.

Once again, the physical exam should be completely normal, and that should be reassuring. Interestingly, about 50% of those experts we mentioned earlier would consider diagnostic studies in the child with probable growing pains, even in the face of a normal exam. These will typically include plain x-rays of the involved extremity, a blood study that looks for evidence of inflammation, and a CBC, checking for any evidence of a bone marrow problem. All of these will be normal in a child with growing pains.

So, once we are comfortable with this diagnosis, what are we to do? How do we help our six-year-old in the middle of the night? As previously mentioned, heat and gentle massage should help. And a measure of patience. None of us want

to be awakened at three in the morning.

But neither does our child. Patience and reassurance will go a long way.

Regarding the use of medications, appropriate doses of ibuprofen or acetaminophen will usually control this pain. If your child has two or three episodes a week, consider giving the medicine before bed. If more frequent, a longer acting analgesic (naproxen) given in the evening may help prevent or at least lessen the intensity of the pain. None of these medications is to be used longterm, and about a week is all that we would recommend. If the pain is worsening or is uncontrollable, it might be time for another evaluation.

Along with patience and reassurance, another key to effective management of this problem is to encourage your child’s normal activities. Don’t let this dominate you or your child’s home-life and emotions.

A

re your trees and shrubs covered with a scaly, gray-green growth?

If you said yes, then you have some organisms called lichens growing on your plants.

Lichens are complex, symbiotic organisms that consist of a fungus and an alga that live together, each contributing to each other for survival. Even though lichens look like they may be bad for plants and may be growing on a dead branch or a plant that does not look healthy, they are a harmless organism. The presence of lichens is also a sign of good air quality.

The basic requirements for lichens to grow are sunlight, high humidity, and a substrate to grow upon. The fungus part of a lichen gathers moisture and nutrients from the air. The algae part of the lichen contains chlorophyll that captures sunlight energy and converts this into chemical energy. In essence, the fungus acts as the roots of a plant suppling the water and nuPAGE 12

trients and the algae acts as the leaves of a plant providing carbohydrates that the fungus needs to survive.

There are many species of lichen and they are generally separated into three groups.

Scabrous lichens are one-dimensional, a flattened scaly growth held tightly to the substrate where they are growing. You will often find these growing on rocks or tree trunks, although they can grow on just about any stable substrate. Foliose lichens have more depth and look leafier, somewhat like a lettuce leaf that fan our relatively flat. They are often what you see growing on dead branches in sunny areas and logs in the woods, but I have seen them growing on a mailbox, wrought-iron outdoor furniture, rocks, and in the woods are often growing in association with mosses.

es in all directions, although others look like small champagne glasses growing out from the substrate.

So, why are the lichens growing on your plants? Anything that causes your plants to lose vigor may contribute to lichen colonization. If a plant does not have a dense canopy of leaves the lichen may start growing the twigs and branches because of the lack of shade that a healthy canopy of leaves would produce. Although some lichen species will grow shady areas, many of them grow best in high sunlight areas.

Typical causes of the reduction of plant vigor include, improper pH of the soil, inadequate nutrients in the soil, compacted soils, drought, high moisture levels, root diseases, leaf diseases, pest problems such as scale insects, air pollution, improper plant selection for the particular location, and so on. In other words, just about anything.

How do you deal with lichens? Since li-

chens are not the problem, just the consequence of a problem, the first recommendation is usually to submit a soil sample for a nutrient and pH analysis. This can be done through any Extension office.

To submit a soil analysis, take several small samples of the top six inches of soil around the plant in question. Mix these samples together in a container, and then bring us a pint of this soil. Make sure you bring enough, if you have less than a pint of soil, we cannot accept the sample. There is a $6 laboratory fee for each sample, however one sample can represent a large area with multiple plants.

You may also want to bring us a cutting from the top of the plant such as a 12 to 18inch branch that has living leaves. orthy of note on the local music scene is the upcoming induction of the WBT Briarhoppers into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame (NCMHOF). Induction ceremonies were set for October at the Gem Theatre in Kannapolis, N.C., but have been postponed until after the Corona virus.

The Briarhoppers have been in the music making business continuously since PAGE 14

1934, when the group was formed to play on Charlotte’s WBT radio. At that time, radio stations were not allowed to play records, so WBT formed its own band to perform live on the radio. The band used a blend of deft musicianship and downhome humor to quickly build a following, all-the-while hawking products of sponsors such as cure-all tonic Peruna, hair color restorer Kolor-bak, throat medicine

Zymole Trokeys, and Radio Girl perfume.

Radio bands were the rock stars of their day in the 1930’s and 1940’s, and they didn’t get much bigger than the Briarhoppers. Broadcasting at 50,000 watts, WBT was one of the most powerful stations in the country, reaching thousands upon thousands of people, so being a Briarhopper meant instant celebrity. At one time, the Briarhoppers were nationwide,

as WBT went coat-to-coast with Carolina Hayride on the CBS radio network in 1945.

The Briarhoppers were so successful that they received as many as 10,000 fan letters a week.

You never knew who was listening in.

A young Charlotte area farm boy named Billy Graham, who would later gain fame as an evangelist, was once quoted as saying that the cows all milked better during

Briarhopper time. Legendary news correspondent Charles Kuralt said, “The Briarhoppers were the Julliard String Quartet of country music, and theirs was the music of my youth and upbringing in North Carolina.”

Over the years artists such as Doc Watson, Curly Seckler, Minnie Pearl, Ernest Tubb, and even Elvis Presley all claimed to be Briarhopper fans. The Briarhoppers were also very popular performing live at local venues, as folks would come from miles around to see the band they had heard on the radio. The demand to see The Briarhoppers was so high that the band split into two different performing groups, Unit 1 and Unit 2, which performed at mill villages, town squares, school auditoriums and other locales across the Southeast.

As radio stations were allowed to play records and television overtook radio as America’s favorite medium, the necessity of live groups waned, but the Briarhoppers continued and are doing well 86 years after their beginning.

The band has endured through numerous personnel changes. Over 60 musicians have been part of the Briarhoppers over

their 86 year history. All of the original members of the band, Don White, Big Bill Davis, Johnnie McAllister, Clarence Etters, Thorpe Westerfield, and Jane Bartlett, have passed on, though Billie Burton Daniel, who joined the group in 1936, is alive and well in Wilmington, NC. Musicians who played with The Briarhoppers over the years include Singing Cowboy Fred Kirby, the legendary Arthur Smith, country music singer George Hamilton IV, and banjo virtuoso Earl Scruggs.

Today’s Briarhoppers line-up features a distinctly York County feel. Clover resident and bass player Tom Warlick has been with the band close to two decades now. YC Magazine history columnist and Museum of York County historian Zach Lemhouse plays fiddle, Rock Hill resident and Chester native Don Murray plays guitar and provides much of the group’s folksy humor, while banjo player Erik Svenson rounds out the group as the lone Tar Heel.

It is interesting to note that the style of music the Briarhoppers play is called bluegrass music, though the term “bluegrass music” did not become popular until the late 1940’s, years after the inception of The

Briarhoppers, to describe the music Bill Monroe and the Bluegrass Boys played.

Who knows? Had things gone differently, the term Briarhopper music could have become a genre of music.

Also slated for induction into the NCMHOF are Donald Lawrence, Charles Whitfield, Jermaine Dupri, Michael Mauldin and The Squirrel Nut Zippers. Roberta Flack is set to receive the lifetime achievement award.

In years past at YC Magazine, we’ve done a Spectator’s Guide to the US Disc Golf Championship, providing tips and so on, on how to best experience the event. This year, the title is even more significant because the USDGC is the only Major event of the year. Every other Major planned for 2020 was cancelled due to covid-19. So who will be the 2020 US Champion?

Frontrunners include: • Defending US Champ James Conrad of Blacksburg, Va. In the 2018 USDGC, Conrad took 5-time World Champ Paul McBeth to the edge but fell short. Last year, though, Conrad battled his way back to the finals and held-on to win by one stroke for his first Major victory. Can he repeat?

• 2-time World Champ Ricky Wysocki, of Campobello, S.C. Will this year be his year? We’ve been saying that almost annually about the super talented Wysocki. However, for some reason he just hasn’t been able to secure the US title. With three second place finishes his time might be now.

• 2019 PDGA National Tour Winner Calvin Heimburg of Safety Harbor, Fla. Fast forward a few years and this guy could be dominating the pro tour. 2019

was a breakthrough year for Heimburg with big wins early and late in the season.

Will he avoid the pitfalls of the Winthrop Arena Course?

Round 1’s Feature Card The USDGC’s Feature Card will be covered during Round 1 on Oct. 7.

Women’s National Championship One of the many effects of the global pandemic was an abbreviated pro tour.

Many events planned for the spring were cancelled including the US Women’s Disc Golf Championship, which was slated to play in May in California.

However, top women will still get a chance to earn a national title. A special Women’s National Championship will be held alongside the USDGC this year.

This is not the first time a women’s national champion was crowned at Winthrop. The first three PDGA Majors used to determine a Women’s National Champion took place at Winthrop alongside the USDGC from 1999-2001.

Live coverage will also feature this field as well.

Expect to see the top women in the game like: • 5-time World Champ Paige Pierce Pierce has dominated the women’s side of disc golf since her first World Championship title in 2011. Pay attention when she throws because she could go down as the best woman to ever play the game. Pierce has played in the USDGC four times.

• 2014 World Champ Catrina Allen Capable of turning in very low scores, the six-time Major event winner is a threat to win anywhere. The future hall-of-famer has also played in the USDGC twice.

Don’t miss it!

Being without live spectators is certainly a disappointment to everyone involved in the USDGC and hopes are high for their return next year.

Stars form in groups

S

tars form over millions of years, a much larger time scale than we can observe directly. However, we have knowledge about the age of stars through indirect methods. The study of star clusters, groups of stars, is one method.

Current theory about star formation goes like this: There are large clouds of gas and dust inside of galaxies. They are normally stable, but occasionally something happens to cause the cloud to collapse upon itself. Perhaps a nearby star ends its life and goes supernova, sending a shock wave into the cloud. Under such perturbations and due to the force of gravity, knots in the cloud begin to form. If they are sufficiently massive, these knots contract due to gravity.

We don’t see stars form individually, but rather in groups. Computer models predict that if a contracting knot is spinning, it breaks up into smaller blobs. As these blobs continue to contract upon themselves, they heat up. Once they are hot enough to begin nuclear fusion, they light up and become stars. Their energy eventually blows away the surrounding materials and we see a newly formed star cluster.

Stars in a cluster are all formed out of the same material and are about the same age and the same distance away from us.

There are two different types of star clusters. The first, an open cluster, tends to be made of young stars, a few tens or hundreds of millions of years old. Open clusters have only a few thousand members or less. The Pleaides are a well-known example of an open cluster. They are about 100 million years old and contain some 3,000 member stars.

Globular clusters, on the other hand, are more densely packed. They contain hundreds of thousands or even occasionally millions of stars. They get their name not because they look like a big glob, as I once thought, but rather because the stars form a spherical shape like a huge globe. Globular cluster stars are very old. Some of the oldest stars in our galaxy are members of globular clusters.

How do we estimate the ages of stars if we can’t watch them form? It’s relatively easy for stars in clusters. Remember, all the stars in a particular cluster are about the same age. If we simply look at each star in a cluster, we notice is that some types of stars are missing.

Stellar evolution theory has it that the more massive a star is, the hotter it becomes and the shorter its lifespan. That’s pretty counterintuitive – the more mass a star has to convert into energy, the more quickly it uses that energy – but from looking at star clusters it appears to be true.

More massive stars compress more under

gravity, become hotter, find more pathways to nuclear fusion, and live shorter lives. By looking at a number of open clusters, we can see that the hottest of the ordinary stars are missing. A cluster is given an age based on its hottest remaining members. That’s called the main sequence turnoff. The Pleaides are therefore estimated to be merely 100 million years old. The Hyades, another open cluster in Taurus, has a cooler turnoff point, i.e. more missing stars, and is therefore estimated to be older, about 400 million years old.

Globular clusters are comprised entirely of red, cool stars. Because these stars live to be billions of years old and they are the only stars found in these clusters, globular clusters are estimated to be very old.

There are also other clues that give astronomers reason to believe that open clusters are much younger than the stars in globular clusters. For example, globular clusters are distributed in a halo around our galaxy’s core. Open clusters are found inside the arms of our galaxy, where large

clouds of interstellar matter exist and new stars are still forming.

You can look up at the night sky without any special aid to see a few open clusters: the Pleaides, the Hyades, the Perseus Double Cluster, and the Beehive Cluster have all been seen since ancient times. Globular clusters take a little more work because they are farther away but because globular clusters are so densely packed, they are a beautiful sight to look at through a telescope. One of the most prominent is visible in the summer York County sky, in the constellation of Hercules. You will need a telescope to see individual stars and a bigger telescope to resolve its 300,000 stars down to the core. yc Carole Holmberg is the Planetarium Manager at the Museum of York County. Working Within

“Will this ever end …”

I

wonder on how many of you are adjusting/adapting to the COVID-19. A lot of mixed messages, goals, objectives, etc.

Children/students and parents are having to cope with all that comes with the virus.

For those sports fans, it appears the virus is impacting the world of sports, too. Like 9/11, things will never be the same in our loving USA. Will this ever end…

Like many mental health challenges, clients ask the same question — will my depression, anxiety, OCD, relational challenges, family problems, and etc. ever end?

It seems daunting or overwhelming with no end in sight, especially, in the world of COVID-19 exacerbating the economy, relational stress, and mental/physical-related health issues. The client, like the people being impacted by the virus, feel trapped.

As a result, we react with different coping/managing strategies. Not all of them are healthy or effective, such as substance abuse, relational jumping, etc. — all are considered “escaping” or avoidance/denial strategies.

Therefore, let us explore/examine healthy ways to cope/manage with the process of living and changing through the events such as COVID-19. Some of the techniques may read familiar; however, a quick reminder and continual practice will keep you afloat.

One step at a time: Anxiety and/or being stuck in depression are often due to being overwhelmed with circumstances, events, activities, etc. Just like the impact of the virus in our nation, it seems daunting and overwhelming. However, taking one step at a time will “move” you beyond the challenge or circumstance. The following are some things to consider: • You have choices, even if you feel “trapped” in your circumstances. As a result of the circumstances such as finances, relationships, sex, COVID-19, addictions, and all the entrapments of depression/anxiety and other mental health challenges and concerns, we have a choice. In the moment it may feel hopeless/helpless, but you have a choice — even it’s a mental choice.

• Remind yourself, one step can be big or small, but the important thing is to take the first step. Take the very thing you have trouble with and break that “thing” or step into smaller steps • Think outside the box — often we are “trapped” in our tradition, wiring,

and limited knowledge, resource, and scripts. Brainstorming is the key — remember, without negatives. Search for something outside of you such as areas you may have little or no knowledge, even a relationship you may feel uneasy about — sometimes these are resources for thinking outside the box and brainstorming. I read and build a body of knowledge and skills outside of me (that includes interests, hobbies, etc.).

Do something relatively “risky” – take a chance, and it might open some doors.

Again, healthy risk!

• Use a behavior that helps in taking the first step – it must be an action to be completed. Thinking or feeling are steps, but it is the behavior that seals the deal. Thus, taking the step may be less than more or vice versa, depending on the behavior. Be careful about the “all or none” — it often stagnates the step (i.e., usually guilt/shame or doubt are the results).

• Remind yourself, you’re becoming

(vs the product or the end) – thus, it will allow you grace and the ability to progress in a positive direction. Over the years, I have learned and relearned the power of Grace and Process – I am unable to be a product/result/outcome.

I am who I am; thus, becoming is a process of bringing “you” along through the journey, acceptance. Remember, “imperfection is perfection and perfections are imperfect.” As I have conveyed in previous articles, if you become a product, you become nonexistent. The process brings you to life — the meaning and purpose that drives many of us such as career, roles we play, legacies, and all that brings about eternity due to you “passing” who you are to the next generation or those around you. Hence, the process never ends — it takes a different matter or energy. Like was illustrated to me by a friend’s son, “we drink dinosaur urine.” Yes, science has provided us the idea that no matter how many billions of years ago, we drink di-

nosaur urine. Think about it with me… the cycle of rain (simply put, evaporates and drops, and the pattern continues to infinity and beyond). Thus, when you drink a glass of water, mmmm…. dinosaurs (lol!).

Bringing this to a full circle -when will it end? The question can be modified to how do I become the process versus the end?

It’s hot out. Let’s play with ice!

S

o this dude, Richard III, loses his horse in a big battle and wanders around crying, A Horse! A Horse!

My kingdom for a horse! A literary device most Shakespearian scholars choose to interpret as the chances of fortune turning on something as insignificant as a horse. So too, dear Richmond, doth lie the watery downfall of thine own cocktail upon the lowly ice cube.

Yep, you can ruin the best cocktail recipes by using the wrong kind or too much ice. But here’s the thing — you can pretty much take the regular ice cubes from your freezer, make a decent drink and just be done. But if you want to take it up anoth-

er level, start playing around with different shapes and sizes of ice. You will find a few recipes in your normal repertoire are transformed into something else entirely by changing the mass of the ice. It’s all about how much water you want in your recipe and how quickly you want it, and the tactile experience of drinking it, sometimes referred to as “mouth-feel.”

You will need to buy some ice molds.

I’d recommend starting with two basic shapes: a big square cube and a long rectangular cube. The ones I have are made out of flexible rubber that makes getting the cubes out a breeze. On the other hand, they are a nightmare to fill and transport

to the freezer without spilling water everywhere. So I fill mine sitting on a plastic cutting board and slide them into the freezer cutting board and all.

Last Christmas, my family gave me a compressed ice maker. It’s a small device that sits on the counter and makes the kind of ice you get in some restaurants. Compressed ice is wonderful for its mouth-feel.

It’s not as hard as ice made in other machines and, even though your dentist will cringe, is nice and crunchy. Crushed ice is also an alternative and many home freezers have that option on the ice maker. I don’t have the patience to stand there that long and you can make a reasonable fac-

simile by putting ice cubes into your home blender and bashing them up a second or two. The resulting product isn’t as consistent, but it will do.

Once you have a couple of alternative shapes and sizes of ice on hand, you can start experimenting with your favorite recipes and see which ones respond to changing the ice. If you enjoy something like a high-end, bourbon, scotch or rum “neat” on the rocks, one cool thing to do is match the shape of the ice to your rocks glass. I have some square rocks glasses and it makes a very nice presentation to plunk one, big, square ice cube into it. The oversized cube also works well because it doesn’t melt as fast and the liquor can be leisurely consumed without getting watered down.

The other experiment to do is to determine which recipes work better when you shake the drink with ice and pour it directly into the empty glass versus straining the shaken mixture into a glass filled with fresh ice. I’ve occasionally been surprised at the difference something that simple makes.

For example, I rarely use the compressed ice in the shaker. I use run-of-the-mill ice out of the freezer to shake and then strain it into a glass filled with the compressed ice. Plus, the act of straining it through one of those nice chrome strainers into a glass prepped with ice and a garnish is always a crowd pleaser. I’m such a show off. But unlike Richard III, I haven’t lost my head yet.

Jet Pilot Juice of 1 lime 1 oz cinnamon syrup 1 oz Taylor’s Velvet Falernum 6 drops Pernod (or another brand of absinth) 1 oz gold rum 1 oz dark rum 1 dash Angostura bitters This is a classic Tiki bar favorite. Try it with crushed or compressed ice and then another time put the whole thing in the blender with ice cubes and buzz it up like a frozen daiquiri. Two completely different experiences.

The Local Racing Scene

How important is track preparation?

O

ne of the most important things any track manager or promoter can do to insure fans will return and the racers will provide a exciting night of entertainment, is preparing the track for the night’s competition.

My background was in paved tracks.

Preparing for a nights racing basically consisted of a track inspection, looking for potential holes or large cracks developing on the asphalt. Special patching compounds usually took care of the problem if they were caught early. The next thing was cleaning the track. By that, I mean sweeping the surface with something like a street sweeper or a large blower mounted on a tractor. The biggest culprit were marbles.

No, not the kind kids play with, but pieces of rubber that came off the racing tires.

They would ball up, and, if a soft compound was being used, the top of the racing surface near the outer wall would be covered by these little balls of rubber. If a driver were to go high on the track and drive over these rubber balls, he would lose traction, have to slow, and in some cases, he might spin out, causing a yellow flag and stopping the racing action. That is a promoter’s worst nightmare — too many yellow flags slowing down the night’s action. Nothing upsets the fans more than having to sit through needless race stoppage. Of course, the racer hates a dirty track; he is always aware of what’s on the track and how he can avoid an accident caused by this or any other problem.

Things are entirely different with dirt track racing. Track preparation at almost any track can take a couple or more days to bring the surface up to racing conditions.

Let’s say we’re talking about a Saturday night track. Taking Sunday off, the crew has one week — or less — to get the track surface to where the racers can put on a good show for the fans. Typically, on Monday, the grader operator, who might also operate the water truck and perform other repairs, will start that prep. Following a Saturday night event, a lot of dirt, called a berm, will end up at the top of the track. This dirt must be moved back to the surface, where the cars actually race. Also, because of all the sliding, ruts and grooves may develop. One of the problems being seen is the smaller, four-cylinder, frontwheel-drive race cars seem to be tearing up the track more than other division

racers with larger tires. So, for almost an entire day, the grader operator will move dirt around until the surface is somewhat smooth again. A special roller is towed behind a tractor, putting two-inch size holes onto the surface, a few inches deep. Now the real work begins, the water truck. Some track maintenance men have a better knack for knowing exactly how much water the track will hold. He is the most important man at a dirt track. His knowledge of track prep makes him a wanted man by other tracks. If a promoter is lucky to have this man on his payroll, he is almost assured his racers and fans will go home happy the night after a race.

Watering a track sometimes goes on for up to a few days. This will ensure the water goes deep into the ground, and during race night, that water will come back to the surface. Two results occur: first, it will make for a great racing surface, and second, it will keep dust down to a minimum, making for happy fans. And happy fans are returning fans.

The last thing that takes place, just before the racing action begins, is called rolling the track. After a final watering on race night, cars and trucks will drive around the track driving the last bit of water into the surface and smoothing out the racing

surface. This preparation takes almost a week to accomplish, and this procedure is repeated every single week.

There are two culprits however, a complete lack of rain in the area or so much rain the track is unable to prepare the surface of mud. While dirt track racing is about the most exciting form of racing today, it requires an immense amount of work to keep the fans and racers happy and coming back. Are conditions sometimes less than perfect, sure, but the most successful tracks have this preparation down to a sci-

ence. The promoters know who to hire and keep the help, they know when new clay is needed to replace old clay, they have those contacts, and they have the equipment needed to accomplish this weekly job. The next time you visit a dirt track, or if it’s your first time and you’ve seen a great show, remember, it took a weeks worth of labor to get to that point on race night. yc Stu Lord is a former NASCAR track manager, writer and talk show host living in York. oday, film photographers are sometimes perceived as belonging to one of only two photographic camps, hipsters or dinosaurs. Hipsters are known for using old film cameras and wearing skinny jeans. They drink expensive coffee

and IPA style beer and they like using old, expired film. And, they like camera light leaks showing on their developed film. Dinosaurs are known for using old film cameras and wearing camera vests. They have darkrooms and they smell mildly of developer and fixer. And, they still debate film versus digital image sharpness.

I have a foot in both of those camps. I use old film cameras with hipster-looking leather camera straps. My favorite coffee has three foreign words in its name. I have a darkroom in my basement. I sometimes use expired film, but I don’t like light leaks.

And, an IPA would not be my first choice for a beer. Regardless of what camp I identify with on a given day, shooting black and white film has taught me ways of seeing that has greatly helped my digital photography practice. The good news is, you can simulate some of the film experience very easily using your digital camera.

Black and white film photographers look at a scene thinking in terms of tonal values contained in the scene; the shadows, the mid-tones, and the highlights. True, digital photographers should be doing this as well, but for a film shooter who’s trying to get a shot in only one or two frames, it’s paramount to see the tonal value before ever clicking the shutter.

One difference between film and digital captures is that, a digital photographer tries to preserve detail in the highlights or the brightest area of an image, whereas, a film photographer generally exposes to show detail in the shadows or darkest areas of a photo. Seeing in monochrome breaks the light and shadows down to a very basic level. Monochrome helps you see the strength or weakness of a photo subject.

Rendering a scene into black and white only, one begins to think more of the direction and intensity of light, and you begin to realize how important shadows are to an image. Often, I see an image with an ill-defined or weak subject, and I think, if the photographer had looked at the scene as a black and white image, they would have realized the weakness. Finally, shooting in monochrome eliminates the emotion that color can bring to an image.

As mentioned earlier, you can simulate much of the film experience using your digital camera. Simply set the camera body to shoot in black and white. This is not a new exercise, but it’s worth revisiting periodically. Regardless of brand or level

of digital camera, most will have a dial, button or menu setting that allows you to switch to black and white or monochrome capture; this is often referred to as “Picture Styles”. Research your camera model to determine this setting; just make sure you know how to change it back to color mode as well. Where it can get a little confusing is that some cameras only record “Picture Styles” in the Jpeg format or the style is only readable in the camera manufacture’s provided software. That’s not a problem, just something to know in advance.

I have two suggestions to make this very simple exercise more productive. First, don’t switch to monochrome mode and then shoot away as normal. Observe the scene first, make decisions based on subject, composition, exposure and light, and then take up to a maximum of four images of a scene, adjusting between those four clicks. Part of this exercise is to learn the economy of film photography. Yes, you could take a hundred pics of a scene in an effort to find one good one later at your computer or you can work to increase the quality of the images while decreasing the quantity of images upfront. As Henri Cartier-Bresson said, “The picture is good or not from the moment it was caught in the camera.”

The second suggestion is to do this exercise with purpose. Take time to explicitly photograph in monochrome mode and while the physical scenes are fresh in your memory, download and inspect the images you captured. Things to note and learn from, as captured, is the intended subject strong, does the light emphasize the subject, is the image evocative of the mood you wanted portray in the image.

Hopefully, all of the answers will be yes, but if not, analyze the images to see what improvements could have been made at the time of capture.

Whether coming from a hipster or from a dinosaur, this simple exercise, if practiced, can help strengthen both our color and black and white images. Connections Helping Hands

Viva la difference and common ground

A

s most of you know by now, my inspiration for articles either comes from random conversations or from online. This time, it’s from a conversation I had with a friend I have just about nothing in common with whatsoever, outside of a mutual love of sweet tea, appreciation for fine dining at Waffle House, enthrallment with cold brew coffee, and the fact cats should be a staple of every office. That is all we have managed to find in common thus far.

Sometimes we disagree on just how different we are, but the bottom line is this: It truly doesn’t matter. Our opinions on politics, fried fish, fireworks, religion, what constitutes delicious Mexican food, and the amount of sleep a person should require. None of it matters. Not the big issues. Not the little issues. Because we are both human beings and we should be respected as such. Not as Democrats or Republicans. Not as pro fireworks or anti fireworks. But simply because we are people.

Sure, there are topics that are a little bit off limits. I’m not going to change my mind.

He isn’t going to change his. But it doesn’t require us to hate each other. Nah, we just shake our heads and say - tsk tsk, too bad you are wrong about that, ha ha! And go on with life.

I personally find the things that are different in others fascinating. I mean, sure the world would be a better place if everyone thought like me, but since that doesn’t seem to be realistic, I’ve learned to appreciate each person’s unique factors. I love hearing about experiences I’ll probably never see, places I’ll possibly never go, and interests that I’ve never heard of before. Even a different point of view that maybe I haven’t considered before. Or, maybe I have and I dismissed it, but I’ll listen to your side of the argument, at least for a little bit. What is it going to hurt? Maybe I’ll learn something. Maybe I didn’t know some aspect of the issue and now I’m more educated on the topic. Or I can better understand where you may be coming from now that we’ve had a discussion, and our relationship will be stronger. Again, not saying either one of us changed our minds, but we can have mutual respect for the other person’s situation or understanding of the situation and we can appreciate it.

Now on the total flip side of this, I think it’s just as important that we find where we have common ground to make a re-

Depositphotos.com lationship of any kind work. I say all the time, I can find something to talk to you about, because there is something we have in common. Hey, if Waffle House is our common ground, I assure you I can talk to you for hours about Waffle House.

I’ve spent enough time in my life sitting in those brown booths and I have some stories to tell. You probably do, too, and TA DA! A conversation is started, and we have a grand ol’ time reminiscing about the good ol’ days. Then, through the course of the conversation, we discover other things we can talk about and before you know it, we’ve become fast friends.

Somehow along the way, many folks have turned uniqueness and contrasting opinions into insurmountable differences and polarizing anger and/or distrust. It’s become acceptable to make fun of people

who aren’t just like us and to categorize everyone into the “you are either with me or against me” groups. That’s a shame because one, having a world of cloned minions would be incredibly boring and two, no one always agrees with everything you think. If you are always surrounded by people who believe like you, are your age, have a similar background and experiences, what is there to learn and grow? Not that having friends similar to you is a bad thing; indeed, it can be a great support system. That doesn’t mean you should exclude those people who you have to reach a little bit to find the common ground.

I hope you’ll take this to heart, especially moving into the 2020 Election. Even if someone is discussing politics, or religion, or any other opinion that doesn’t align with yours, you don’t have to respond. Find an-

other topic and dial down the drama. You may develop a new friendship with someone once you see them as a kindred spirit instead of an ignorant enemy.

One final word of advice - if you try your best to reach out to someone and respect their opinions and views but they refuse to grant this back to you, remember, you can only control your response. Don’t give up, but don’t take their actions as an excuse to treat them the same way. This will never lead to civility and the last thing we need in this world is more anger. Wordsmithing Articulate Creativity

Nine elements of writing for publication

R

eaders of this column write for a myriad of reasons. Some write short stories or poetry. Others write novels or nonfiction. Still others are active on social media or write blog posts.

No matter what you write, effective language, thoroughness, editing, and formatting are critical.

Best practices

Does your work proceed or build in a logical way? Should you begin at the beginning or start with action? (Always start with action!)

Review and rewrite as often as necessary to get your work to its best. Avoid working for perfection. Over editing can destroy your voice and message like an ant colony can destroy a pleasant yard. Just one small ant hill is unpleasant. Before long, a fully active nest becomes an eyesore and interrupts the ecology of grassy land. The original landscape, like your message, takes on a different tone and loses its appeal.

Format your work to the required style.

Does the blog call for specific headline or sub-headline styles? Are you to add specific codes so the blog posts accurately?

Is your social media post the correct length? Is your column appropriately written, including a headline directed at your desired audience?

First steps

Initially you write until all your thoughts are on paper without considering the orDepositphotos.com

der. Save the document with a clear file name, such as SummerVacation1. (If you handwrite completely before typing, staple or otherwise contain your work and title the work. Recording the date also helps.

Then you put the paragraphs, sentences, and words into order. Save the new document as SummerVacation2.

Next comes research. What holes did you uncover when you put the ideas into order?

Every written work benefits from research, whether spelling, history, or what competitors have written. Research also offers additional ideas that can fill out a story, provide information for a series of posts, or inspire an expanded work.

The Rewrite

Never publish your first draft.

Next, apply your research to the holes you found. Save as SummerVacation3.

Reread to determine if more research is necessary or what questions readers might have.

Rewrite the draft after adequate research and answering questions.

Editing on purpose

Now is the time to type your work if you have not.

Take advantage of your word processor to check for misspellings and grammar errors. These tools are usually found under the review tab.

WARNING: These built in checkers

are not 100 percent accurate. You need to know the words you mean to use. If the spellchecker offers alternate spelling(s), consult a current dictionary provided through the program, online, or from your personal library. The grammar checker is notoriously inaccurate, so be especially careful accepting recommended changes.

You might choose to try editing apps. I experimented with a popular app and was not impressed with its accuracy, so test different apps if you choose this option. Free trials should be available.

Edit for content

Be sure you have included all pertinent information and eliminated inessential words and parts.

For social media posts and blogs, links might be necessary.

After you include research, endnotes and a bibliography might be in order.

Note inconsistencies

If you use highlighting, italics, boldfacing, or any other change to regular type, note this for the designer, printer, or publisher. Professional cover and interior designer Toni Serofin warns her clients that these font changes don’t always hold when the copy is transferred from a document file into a design file. To be safe, note symbols as well.

Most writers, including me, need an additional editor or proofreader. Never submit your work for critique or a beta read

without self-editing first. Of course, have your work professionally edited before submitting it to an agent or publisher.

Another set of eyes can spot inaccurate words. Readers have perspective to note necessary information that might have been cut in the edit. Readers seeing your work for the first time don’t know how the story or post will end. Their questions can tell you if you’re building tension appropriately or addressing an element sufficiently.

Longer social media posts need outside perspective too.

Writers know their intent. Readers do not, and this makes feedback from critique groups or beta readers essential.

To prepare your best work, write, read, edit, and seek feedback before hiring a qualified, professional editor for your final edit.

Go Play Outside

Cold water escapes from hideous summer heat

L

et’s just face it: this time of year in the South is the worst. Fall is just around the corner, but we’re still dealing with the heat of summer. The moment you step away from air conditioning you’re drenched in sweat. It’s hot, humid and suffocating; I’d rather dress in a tutu and herd pigs in the winter than hike up Crowder’s now. Only cold mountain water is enough to make me even consider being active outside between the hours of 8am and 11pm, and that means finding proper swimming holes.

Lake Wylie has the problem of getting hot and staying hot, and is made worse by overcrowding, sharp objects to cut yourself on, and the ever-present threat of the nuclear plant making you glow. Believe it or not, Landsford Canal offers some great swimming spots on the southern end, between the Chester side and the islands by the take-out. If you’re willing to walk the river up from the bottom parking lot, there’s some little islands perfect for pitching a chair and playing in the water for an afternoon. Further south is my perennial favorite of Stumpy Pond, especially what has been dubbed “Maternity Beach” by some friends after their constant soaks while she was pregnant. Sand, sun, and water deep enough to at least feel cool all make it the best option close to home.

If that isn’t enough to cool me down, my next thought is, “I want to go to beautiful mountains, tube down rapids while sitting in water so cold I have to keep my license on hand to remember my gender, and watch people in the same situation as me and laugh my pants off.” When I can’t resist this thought anymore, I head to Saluda, N.C. and go tubing on the Lower Green, which is known for three things: Bikinis, Beer Guts, and Tattoos.

All on the same person. Definitely a step up from the Catawba, the Lower Green is narrower and has a far better rapid selection making it a more exciting river.

Also, the best people watching is when the cooler of beer, hung precariously inside an innertube, tips over in a rapid. “SAVE THE BEER!!!” is bellowed with the same gusto as “THAR SHE BLOWS!!!” by Captain Ahab, and a mad scramble ensues to salvage all that can be saved.

If the frostbite hasn’t set in yet, it means I’m throwing kayaks on the roof of my car and driving to Lake Jocassee. Without a doubt the most beautiful lake in South Carolina, it’s also the deepest at over 300 feet deep, depending on water levels. Several mountain streams pour into Jocassee, dropping the temperature even lower, and the best one is where the Whitewater River drops 75 feet into the lake. As the waterfall

comes down from the mountain, it has several tiers which form pools after each drop and are perfect for doing nothing but turning yourself into an ice cube. At the bottom of the falls, though, is a huge sand bar, and if nothing else it is a good place to warm yourself in the sun for the four-mile paddle back to the parking lot.

As long as my teeth aren’t chattering so bad that I sound like a hedge trimmer, I get back in the car and head up to Pisgah for the granddaddy of cold water: Sliding Rock. It’s not that Sliding Rock is the coldest water on the east coast, but during the wait to get to the top of the slide you get nice and toasty waiting in the sun, so the shock of the 50 degree water after a 60’ slide is horrific……I love it. The only thing better is the super-secret rope swing located across from the parking lot that’s on the right hand side after Government Road splits off from 276 that I’ve been sworn to secrecy about. Tucked back on the Davidson River, there’s a rope swing with a nice 15’ deep hole for you to swing into. Deep water doesn’t prevent belly flops though, so remember to drop in feet first.

Finally, I recently discovered a super-secret spot that I’m really not allowed to give specifics on. I’ll give a hint that it’s in the

general area of Wilson’s Creek, but it’s actually one of the feeder streams. There are plenty of excellent swimming, fishing, and whitewater kayaking opportunities on Wilson’s Creek, but on any given weekend it’s packed the way Carowinds was in 2019.

This spot we found had a waterfall, a camping spot, a deep swimming hole with a rock to jump off into it....and no people. We sat there for hours on a Saturday and only saw a handful of people, a dozen pinchy crawfish, and two lazy water snakes.

And, as with any cold water adventure, bring a change of dry clothes, a towel, and maybe even an emergency blanket.

A

re you hearing this a lot these days as the Covid-19 crisis continues?

If not, most of us are thinking it.

What else can you do when aspects of your life change almost daily?

It’s particularly tough as a parent, and I’m sure as a grandparent. We feel like we have a certain amount of life experience that we can and should use to help mentor our children. But we haven’t lived through a pandemic before. We are all learning at the same rate.

This is not the first pandemic our world has faced; and it likely won’t be the last.

We have a great tool to face it, though. The advances of technology that our generation have to power through this crisis are beyond those of the past.

Sure, we’ve had digital resources for many years now, but the pandemic has forced us to put on our thinking caps and find new, creative ways to do what we’ve done before. Many parks, recreation and tourism departments created videos to share activities on social media channels and websites when we couldn’t provide programs at our facilities.

We’ve helped you get moving at home with video stretches, exercise and sports drills. Some of these have been geared to kids using minimal equipment so they can sharpen skills .. basketball, volleyball, socPAGE 28

cer, softball, football and baseball and be ready for the next season. Parents know the importance of keeping kids active when stuck at home.

For those who don’t consider themselves “crafty,” we’ve demonstrated art and science-related projects on video with simple steps and basic supplies to share with your families and friends. Not only did you have fun, but you could enjoy the results -a cool t-shirt or new piece of artwork.

Some videos have been educational .. sharing cultural and historical information. As an example, the relatively new Lifelong Learning @ Rock Hill program, part of Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism (PRT), was cut short for the Spring 2020 semester of classes due to Covid-19. This program is for senior adults to share knowledge through unique classroom opportunities.

Because classroom sessions couldn’t be held, the program ended with an informative video presentation on the Spanish Flu Epidemic by Dr. Eddie Lee. The Fall semester of Lifelong Learning will be delivered fully by Zoom, featuring a “Listen and Learn” series of webinars. The program kicks off on Sept. 16,

so there’s still time to become a member and participate.

Drive-in movies and outdoor concerts where families or small groups stay in (or at) their cars have been popping up as an entertainment option. Rock Hill’s Red, White and Boom celebration was a virtual affair. And current plans for this year’s ChristmasVille festival in Rock Hill include a mix of virtual and physical events.

The pandemic has caused more of us to embrace technology for paying bills, requesting customer service, purchasing groceries and picking up dinner whether to limit in person contact or because facilities were closed to walk-in service. If you’re relatively new to using websites and apps for these activities, you’ve likely found many benefits which may keep you using online services even post-pandemic. Most parks, recreation and tourism departments have online services allowing you to register and pay for programs or to reserve a facility.

With Special Olympics practice and events cancelled due to Covid-19, Rock Hill PRT’s Therapeutic Recreation (TR) staff created their own “TR Olympics” featuring

alternative competitive events like the ice cube slide and ping pong drop. These were not held virtually, so activities and participants were socially distanced, masks were required and other safety measures (cleaning of touch points, etc.) were in place.

Modified TR programs are important to engage those with intellectual disabilities since these individuals can be more susceptible to the effects of isolation.

There’s no doubt that since mid-March 2020, Covid-19 has brought numerous changes to us in York County. We’ve joined the world in battling a pandemic, while trying to find some normalcy in our lives. A big shout out to all those, no matter what business or activity you are involved in, who have shown perseverance, gotten creative and found ways to adapt what you offer to help us all keep taking life one day at a time.

Your Food, Your Kitchen, And You

Revise your recipes for health

A

fter many years practicing as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (R.D.N.) working with people of all ages and from all walks of life, I teach sticking to basics. I recommend making simple adjustments to your favorite dishes, recipes, and meals you already eat. The popular cooking shows are fun to watch.

Cooking magazines and blogs are fun to read and have introduced foods and spices across the world. (It’s almost infinite the different ways they flavor chicken!)

For many of us, while we love watching chefs on TV, we fall back to old favorites: macaroni and cheese, potato salad, beef stew, soup, fried chicken, broccoli casserole, spaghetti, etc. These are just a few, but you understand; we have our favorites dishes and tend to stick with

what we know and like. Consider your old favorites and apply a little creativity to make simple adjustments.

Let’s take spaghetti — everybody (almost) makes and/or eats it. We’ll start with the tiring but important recommendations for lowering fat, sodium and calorie content. It’s easy to decrease these! Start with meat. To decrease fat and calories: choose from ground turkey or chicken breast, use extra-lean ground beef, try venison, and/or simply decrease the amount of meat — let the sauce be the heart of the meal. Consider chopped chicken breast or fish. Try meatless – tofu and legumes (black beans, chickpeas, navy beans, pintos, etc.) for protein.

Spaghetti All-In-One Dish

Ingredients: 1 # lean ground meat (i.e. turkey breast, (break into 3 in. to 4 in. pieces) chicken breast, extra lean ground beef) 1 tablespoon of dried onion 3 ¾ C hot water ½ teaspoon Italian seasoning 1 can (6 ounces) tomato paste ½ teaspoon garlic powder (low-sodium if available) Optional ingredient – ½ teaspoon Parme5 ounces of whole wheat spaghetti san cheese (low-fat, low-sodium) Directions: Brown ground meat in skillet. Add hot Stir frequently. Cook until spaghetti is tender. Serve while hot. (grated lean water, tomato paste, spaghetti to meat in cheese optional). the skillet. Stir together and add spices.

Makes 4-6 Servings Cover and bring to a boil 10-12 minutes.

the meat, place in a colander in the sink, drain and rinse with hot water, return to pan for seasoning.

For sodium, skip added salt or add less than typically. If you use canned foods, use low- or no sodium paste, sauce, canned tomatoes, etc. Rinse diced tomatoes, mushrooms, etc.

Recipe modification — if you’re really trying to eat a healthy diet, you might enjoy hearing that there are many foods that you may need to increase! Many Americans are consuming far less than the recommendations for fruits, vegetables, and fiber. However, many of you report “liking” fruits and vegetables — are you really consuming enough on a daily basis?

I believe many of our tried and true recipes and dishes can be modified to increase the vegetables, fiber, and fruits. Back to spaghetti — increase fiber by using whole grain pasta (and veggies in your sauce).

How can you increase the vegetables in your spaghetti? You could always add more tomatoes, mushrooms, bell peppers, sautéed onions and garlic… the typical spaghetti-ingredients, and you could have a spinach salad on the side.

This is fine.

Get creative! Consider adding: spaghetti squash in place of pasta; beans (black, white, navy, Great Northern), chopped cauliflower, broccoli, shredded or pureed carrots, spinach (fresh, frozen, or canned), eggplant, zucchini, etc. Ideas shared with me by folks: add apple slices or mandarin oranges, add nuts (great protein source), cinnamon for sweetening.

For flavor, salt is just one way to flavor food. For some folks, a small amount can be consumed in a healthy diet and may enhance the flavor of spaghetti sauce or other recipes. However, there is a multitude of ways to flavor food. Sauté your fresh onions and garlic in olive oil before adding to your sauce. Use any of the following to add flavor: freshly ground black pepper, white pepper, red pepper, a dash of pepper sauce (i.e. Tabasco®), onion powder and garlic powder, cumin, sage, poultry seasoning, Italian seasoning, fresh or dried bay leaf, oregano, mint. Use fresh herbs vs. dried the flavor of fresh herbs is described as being more delicate (double or triple amount of fresh herbs to dried).

Maybe you won’t change your spaghetti recipe - consider your kitchen — how can you modify your favorite dishes, recipes, meals and menus to increase your servings of fruits and vegetables?

National Pet Disaster Preparedness Month

A

re you ready for National Pet Disaster Preparedness Month?

With hurricane season upon us, it is no wonder that September is National Pet Disaster Preparedness Month.

I remember back in 2005, when my dear friend had to evacuate herself, her dogs, her turtle, and a dove named Doug from New Orleans when Hurricane Katrina hit. She drove everything she could fit in her Volkswagen (which mainly consisted of animals and animal related gear) to her parent’s home in Alabama, and then hit the road again to stand beside me as I got married. The fact that her bridesmaids

dress did not make the checklist of things to pack, certainly did not surprise me in the least!

Disasters happen when we least expect them and by planning ahead, you can help keep your family (including the fourlegged family members) safe. Here are the supplies you will need to create a simple pet first aid kit and a “bug out” kit.

• Two hard sided pencil cases. These will be your pet first aid kits. I recommend, keeping one in your car at all times and putting the other in your bug out kit. The hard-sided cases are best because they can be used as a food or

water dish for your pet, if needed. Each of these pencil cases should contain: ◊ A slip type leash. These leashes are those often used by veterinarians– in fact, your vet would probably be happy to give you one with their logo on it. I love these because they serve as a both leash and collar in case your pet breaks or loses its collar. They are secure, so pets cannot easily slip out of them, and they are very handy for snagging loose dogs.

The loop can also be used around the nose to create a temporary muzzle for an injured animal. ◊ A copy of your pet’s health records. You never know when you might need your pet’s vaccination history, a list of medical conditions, and microchip number. Having the name and phone number of your veterinarian written down will be helpful if you are injured or if your cell phone dies. I would also recommend writing down the phone number of the closest 24 hour emergency facility in your area, Pet Poison Control, and the nearest Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. Store these important documents in a sealed watertight plastic bag. It is a great idea to pre-program these phone numbers and addresses into your cell phone and GPS as well. ◊ A bottle of saline eyewash. This is great for flushing the eyes and can also be used to lavage a wound. ◊ Gloves and hand sanitizer. This is for you. Some animals can transmit disease to humans. ◊ Gauze/non-stick pads. These are great for making a temporary bandage to cover a wound. ◊ Waterproof tape. Great for securing a bandage or labeling things. ◊ Diphenhydramine (Benadryl) 25mg. Consult with your veterinarian if possible before giving this to your pet. A typical dose is 1 mg/ pound, and this will come in handy for insect bites/stings. ◊ Plastic poop bags. These come in handy if you run out when you are walking your dog. They can also double for sample collection if your

pet becomes ill with gastrointestinal symptoms or if they ingest a potentially toxic plant or mushroom.

• A brightly colored backpack, bag, or a plastic tote with a lid. I call this a “bug out” kit. It is more comprehensive than a First Aid Kit and handy to grab-and-go in case of a true emergency or evacuation. You can make one for each member of your family, but for this article we will focus on the one you make for your pet(s). I like using something that is brightly colored because it is easy to find when you need it and can also be used as a signal in case of emergency. If you have a cat, you will need to use the plastic tote, which can double as a litter box if needed. In addition to your Pet First Aid Kit, your Bug Out Kit should also contain: ◊ A pillowcase. This is great for a temporary cat or small critter transport. ◊ An extra collar and leash for your pet with ID Tags. ◊ A sealed gallon bag of cat litter. ◊ Your pet’s medications. I recommend having 2 extra doses of your pet’s monthly heartworm and flea preventions and 2 weeks’ worth of daily medications. ◊ Pet food. Canned food with a popoff lid is a great enticer for pets who will not eat or to help lure a lost pet to safety. A gallon sealed bag of extra kibble is also advised. ◊ A flashlight with extra batteries. ◊ Collapsible water and food dishes. ◊ A full sealed water bottle.

I hope you have some fun creating your pet first aid kit and bug out kit with your family! ark your calendars. Information about the Part C advantage plans and Part D prescription drug plans available in 2021 will be available by the first week of October. Each year, there are new health plan and prescription drug coverage choices. Medicare beneficiaries should review their current health and prescription drug coverage and make sure their current plans will continue to meet their needs for next year. Those satisfied their current coverage will meet their needs will not need to do anything.

Annual Medicare Open Enrollment (Oct. 15-Dec. 7) allows beneficiaries to compare other health or prescription drug plans with their existing health or prescription drug plan coverage.

During Medicare Open Enrollment, beneficiaries can decide to stay in Original Medicare or join a Medicare Advantage Plan. Beneficiaries already in a Medicare Advantage Plan can use Open Enrollment to switch back to Original Medicare.

Medicare beneficiaries should review any notices from their current Medicare Part C and/or D plans for next year 2021 Medicare Part C Advantage/Health and/or Part D Medicare prescription drug plans.

Beginning in October, you can shop here www.Medicare.gov/plan-compare for drug plans (Part D) and Medicare Advantage Plans (Part C) using Medicare’s tools to find a plan that meets your needs.

Following are important Medicare Open Enrollment dates for Medicare Advantage and Medicare prescription drug coverage: Oct. 15 — Open Enrollment begins This is your one time of the year when all people with Medicare can make changes to their health and prescription drug plans for the next year. Oct. 15 is the first day you can change your Medicare coverage for

next year (2021).

Dec. 7 — Open Enrollment ends In most cases, December 7 is the last day you can change your Medicare coverage for next year. The new plan has to get your enrollment application by December 7th.

Jan. 1 — Coverage begins Your new coverage begins if you switched to a new plan. If you stay with the same plan, any changes to coverage, benefits, or costs for the new year will begin on Jan. 1.

• Look at your most recent “Medicare & You 2021” handbook to see a listing of 2021 plans available in your area. Also review any information you get from your current plan, including your plan’s “Annual Notice of Change” letter.

• Call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-6334227) and say “Agent.” TTY users should call 1-877-486-2048. Help is available 24 hours a day, including weekends. If you need help in a language other than English or Spanish, let the customer service representative know the language.

All York County Library locations are now open for limited curbside services. Anyone with a York County Library

card can check out materials they have placed on hold. Please call your nearest YCL location during curbside service hours to notify staff before returning Book Club Kits and Kinder Kits. Outside book drops remain open, and items will be quarantined for 96 hours before being checked in. Notifications of overdue items will be made during this time, but no overdue fees will be charged for items returned. If you received a temporary eCard, please call your local YCL branch to have your eCard converted into a regular Library card. Patrons can place book holds using the online catalog sclends.lib. sc.us/eg/opac/home) or can call their local library branch for help. Email notifications will be sent when the item placed on hold is ready for pickup. ‘Make & Take’ activities will also be available for pickup during curbside hours. If patrons have reader’s advisory, reference, or general questions, they can call the main number at any YCL location.

In the first three days, you can expect your dog to test the boundaries, feel overwhelmed, not feel “himself.” He may not want to eat or drink and he may want to shut down or curl up in his crate or hide under the table. Give him time, be patient and let him settle in at his own pace.

After three weeks your dog may start to settle in a bit more. He’ll be figuring out his environment, possibly realizing this could be his forever home, feeling more comfortable and confident, developing a routine, letting his guard down and showing is true personality. Behavior issues may start showing up.

After three months your dog may finally feel comfortable in your home, established a routine, built trust with you and your entire family and gained a complete sense of security with his new family.

Always remember to take it slow, be patient, have faith and try to put yourself in your dog’s paws to gain a better under-

Rules and routines are imperative to set your dog and family up for success. When your dog joins your family, he will experiment with various behaviors to try and figure out this great big world. The more consistent everyone is, the quicker he will figure it all out. Your routines and boundaries will reflect your dog raising and training philosophies. As a family, you will need to ask yourselves some questions: • Will he be allowed on furniture?

• Where will he sleep?

• Who will feed him; what, and when?

• Where will he be during the day?

• Who will train him and how?

• How will you correct him for making mistakes?

f you have been reading my previous articles, I have written about the power of rescuing a dog, knowing and deciding which breed best fits your lifestyle, and becoming familiar with a dog’s body language. There are so many factors to keep in mind when you are planning on introducing your new dog into your home. In this particular situation, let’s say that you currently don’t have another dog. Timing is critical in every aspect of our lives, but especially when bringing home a new dog.

It’s best to bring a new dog home when things are calm and preferably stress-free.

Have enough time for a leisurely introduction process and a low-key adjustment period with supervision. A peaceful first introduction sets the tone for great success not just in your home, but with your family as well.

I always recommend a crate to all my clients. A crate is a safe place for the dog to go, it gives them a sense of security and safety, think of it like a human’s bedroom.

A dog at any age benefits from a crate, not just puppies. The size of the crate should be big enough for the dog to stand up comfortably and turn around and lie down. If you do have a puppy and know how big it will grow up to be, you can purchase a larger crate with a removable divider to “grow” with the puppy. Dogs instinctively seek small spaces to create protective shelters for themselves. Many humans believe a crate is a form of punishment. They couldn’t be further from the truth.

Always have a collar with an up-to-date tag and always microchip your dog through your veterinarian in case they get loose. Always have a harness and a dog seatbelt to restrain your dog in the car for their safety.

Invest in appropriate toys for your dog, natural teething chews and toys that are only made in the USA. Puppies will need teething toys that stimulate their gums and have an odor that will entice them to chew on their designated toys and not your favorite shoes or slippers. Always set your dog up to succeed and place plenty of teething toys around your home so your dog doesn’t think everything is something for him to chew on.
