was winding down, from many Thanksgivings before. And seeing in my mind’s eye the various family gatherings over the years makes me smile.

Writing this, I can just taste Thanksgiving’s featured spices, like cloves and nutmeg in a sour cream pie made from a family passed-down recipe or sage in the stuffing. Traditions are important. They help connect us to those who came before us and will come after us. But it’s also good to breathe life into those traditions by creating new ones.

While we get a bit of a brain break over the holiday, don’t forget to go outdoors and breathe in some fresh air. Go for a leisurely walk, a strenuous hike, or an endurance bike ride. Observe the night sky. When was the last time you looked up? The Leonid meteor shower peaks November 16-17. Set up a comfortable chair, dress warmly, hold

ovember brings thoughts of giving thanks; spending time with family; cooking favorite dishes, trying new ones, and sharing recipes; and trips full of adventure. Though celebrations may differ this year due to COVID-19, Thanksgiving still has the potential to be a feast for all the senses smells, sounds, sight, taste, and touch.

If you close your eyes for a moment, how many homey food celebrations can you recall, simply from the memory of the aroma? Thanksgiving smells of turkey and pumpkin pie, just pulled from the hot oven, are at the top of my list. I can easily recall the distinctive smell of the outdoors’ earthy pungency, along with the crackling of dried leaves underfoot. I can still hear pockets of laughter and story swapping throughout the house while the last bit of final food frenzy and gravy preparation

a mug of hot chocolate, and get your awe on! Here’s a tip for any chocolate lovers out there. Add a piece of chocolate to your favorite hot cocoa mix for an extra-chocolatey treat.

During this month of highlighting thankfulness, not only in words but in actions, it’s a good time to ask ourselves about giving to others. With economic hardships still continuing to ripple through the entire country and beyond due to the pandemic, it’s important to support our local non-profit organizations. Whether it’s donating items to thrift shops, volunteering our services, giving money to animal shelters, or buying extra groceries for a food pantry and neighbor in need, each positive action generates more positive actions.

Pause for positivity. Pausing gives an opportunity to get out of our own heads and consider others; pay attention to the mo-

ment we are currently in; feel nourished by our surroundings; and simply appreciate a beautiful sky or a crispy, cool evening.

How do you walk through life? When you laugh, do you laugh heartily? When you sing, do you project the meaning of the words? I had a wonderful piano teacher when I was young. She told me to play every musical note like I meant it. Even if it was a wrong key, she wanted me to play it with confidence.

My heart is full of gratitude — for my family; my friends; our YC Magazine columnists, production team, advertisers, and readers; the beauty this planet and our galaxy offers; the impetus to continually challenge myself; teachers, both in school and in the school of life, who made an impact on me and helped me grow; and for adventures and friends yet to come. Isaac Hayne: The Nathan Hale of the South

R

evolutionary War espionage has been brought to the forefront of popular culture by the success of the AMC original series Turn, based on the New York Times bestselling book Washington’s Spies by Alexander Rose.

Thanks to the success of Rose’s book and the subsequent television series, the story of George Washington’s secret spy ring is well known. However, Revolutionary War cloak and dagger affairs were not relegated only to the North. In fact, York County has an interesting connection to Patriot spy craft by way of Isaac Hayne.

Isaac Hayne was born in Colleton County, S.C. on Sept. 23, 1745. After his father’s death in 1751, the young Hayne inherited Hayne Hall, a 900-acre plantation in St. Bartholomew’s Parish. He gradually expanded his land holdings to include two more plantations, some property in Charles Town and Beaufort, and interest in an ironworks in present-day York County that was owned and operated by William Hill. Hill was born in County Antrim in Northern Ireland in 1741. He migrated to Pennsylvania and then moved south into what is now York

County. He acquired 24,376 acres of timbered land in 1762 near Bethel Presbyterian Church. As the relationship between England and the American colonies deteriorated, South Carolina’s Provincial Congress resolved that “a premium of one thousand pounds currency be given to the person… that shall first produce… one ton of good bar iron.” Hill took this opportunity to build his first iron furnace. Using the charcoal from harvested hardwoods to power the furnace, Hill turned raw iron ore into cannon, swivel guns, and ammunition to support the

Patriot cause. Over the next three years, Hill’s Ironwork’s continued to expand and eventually attracted the attention of wealthy Charlestonian Isaac Hayne. The two entered into a partnership in March 1778. The initials of Isaac Hayne (IH) and William Hill (WH) are visible in the large cast iron fireback of the Ironwork’s furnace accompanied by the inscription “Liberty or Death.”

As the fireback inscription suggests, Hayne and Hill were both ardent Patriots. When the American Revolution erupted in 1775, Hayne enlisted in the

yc magazine... York County’s Entertainingly Informative Magazine Colleton County Militia Regiment. He later resigned his commission when he was denied the rank of colonel. He eventually re-enlisted as a private and continued to serve until he was captured at the Fall of Charlestown on May 12, 1780.

The terms of surrender decided upon at Charles Town’s capture stated that soldiers of the Continental Line would remain prisoner until exchanged. The Patriot militiamen, on the other hand, would be released on parole. On June 3, 1780, Sir Henry Clinton, Commander-in-Chief of all British forces in North America, issued a proclamation which revoked the parole of militia captured at Charles Town unless they swore an oath of allegiance to the Crown. Hayne reluctantly agreed to these terms with the understanding that he would not be forced to take up arms against his Patriot countrymen. Satisfied, he returned to Hayne Hall where he hoped to stay for the remainder of the war.

However, in the summer of 1781, Hayne was summoned to Charles Town and told that he was required to serve in the British Army against Patriots in the state. Enraged by the breach of agreement, Hayne promptly violated the terms of his parole and re-enlisted with the Patriots. Shortly after his re-enlistment, Hayne led a daring raid a few miles from Charles Town in which he kidnapped Loyalist Andrew Williamson from his bed. Prior to the Fall of Charlestown, Andrew Williamson was an active Patriot in South Carolina’s Backcountry. Early in the Revolution, he served as commanding officer in the Ninety Six District Militia Regiment. From July to October of 1776, he led an expedition against Cherokee Native Americans in northwestern South Carolina and participated in the ill-fated 1778 Florida Campaign. After the Patriot defeat at Charles Town, Williamson defected to the British and retired to the relative safety of his plantation near the British-occupied city.

Isaac Hayne (Public domain) ment of 90 dragoons were dispatched under the command of British Maj. Thomas Frasier to pursue Hayne and retrieve Andrew Williamson. In the early morning hours of Sunday July 8, the British ambushed Col. Hayne and his Patriot militia at their encampment near Ford’s Plantation on the Ashepoo River in present-day Colleton County. Col. Hayne attempted to retreat atop his horse “King Herod”.

Unfortunately for Hayne, his steed had grown fat during his master’s 18 months of inactivity. When he reached a split rail fence, the horse balked and Hayne was forced to dismount and take down the fence so he could continue his escape.

The British quickly apprehended Col. Hayne and imprisoned him in the dungeon at Charleston’s Old Exchange building. Hayne was charged with espionage and treason and hung without a trial on August 4, 1781. When news of Hayne’s execution reached General Nathanael Greene, he pledged to retaliate. He even wrote a letter to George Washington and Congress seeking guidance and support, both of whom urged caution. Though Greene never directly retaliated for Hayne’s death, some have suggested that the Battle of Eutaw Springs was in direct response to Hayne’s execution.

Shockingly, Nathaniel Greene also spoke in defense of Hayne’s kidnap victim, Andrew Williamson. In the wake of legislation passed by Governor Rutledge’s to punish Loyalists and their families, General Nathanael Greene addressed South Carolina’s House of Representatives asking for leniency in Williamson’s case. According to Greene, Williamson had been employed as early

Unfortunately, there is no substantial evidence other than Greene’s address that suggests that Williamson was spying for the Patriots. The ins and outs of Vaping I found something in my middle-schooler’s bedroom that looked like a liquid-filled pen with a mouthpiece. My friend told me it was used for “vaping,” whatever that is.

he movie Ben is Back, starring Julia Roberts, should be watched by every parent with a teenager—with the teenager in the room. It’s a no-holdsbarred story of substance abuse, accurately and painfully presented. It’s what we see every day. The opening scene shows a young man apparently stalking an empty home, peering through curtained windows. He occasionally pauses, takes something from his pocket, and vapes. The writers and director were subtle yet intentional in presenting this, and we appreciate it.

And yes, this is something you should be worried about.

starting in China. Since then, their use has exploded, attracting the attention of “Big Tobacco.” These giant corporations saw another way to hook people on nicotine and make a lot of money. Initially in the U.S., e-cigarettes were produced by small companies, but most have been bought by the usual suspects — R. J. Reynolds, Altria (previously Phillip Morris), among others.

Globally, this has become a $5 billion a year business.

What do these things look like?

We have to pay attention, because these things continue to evolve. At first, they were designed to look like a regular cigarette. You’d “smoke” one, then throw it away. The need for stronger nicotine concentrations and less detection led to penstyle products and then tank-style devices.

“Pod-mod” models are rechargeable devices that have replaceable cartridges that can contain flavorings in addition to nicotine.

One of these “pod mods” is the JUUL, a device that looks a lot like a USB flash drive.

It’s small, discrete (by intention), and can be difficult to detect in school and other public settings. This is where the term “Juuling” comes from.

While the devices might differ in appearance, they all function in the same way. There’s a cartridge that contains a liquid (nicotine, flavorings, and other stuff), an “atomizer” (a chamber that vaporizes the liquid with a heating element), and a battery. The user activates the device by either inhaling or pressing a button, causing the atomizer to heat and vaporize the liquid. The vapor is inhaled (hence the term “vaping”), the nicotine is delivered, and the device is hidden away. There’s no combustion and no smoke.

But, we need to remember that the manufacturers of these devices are intent on increasing sales, increasing the number of users, and doing everything they can to make the delivery systems as attractive as possible. They’ll continue to evolve.

So in this “juice” compartment — where the liquid is stored — what do we find? It’s not just nicotine, though that’s the major component. The average amount of nicotine in a regular cigarette is around 12 mgs, though manufacturers learned a long time ago to manipulate this number. The nicotine content of e-cigarettes can range from 0 to as much as 24 mgs.

Other chemicals include things like lead, tin, nickel, arsenic, propylene glycol, ethylene glycol, and a host of flavorings.

It’s these flavorings that have drawn a lot of attention, since the obvious intent is to attract younger “vapers” by offering choices such as fruit, candy, soda, and alcohol flavors.

I thought these e-cigarettes were designed to help people stop cigarette smoking. Isn’t that a good thing?

Anything that helps people stop smoking is a good thing, and e-cigarettes were promoted to do just that. The reality is something different. To date, most large studies have not demonstrated a reduction in cigarette smoking with the use of e-cigarettes. Rather, a whole new industry has been born and evidence is mounting that non-smokers that start vaping may ultimately become cigarette smokers.

But who are the “vapers” among us?

It’s a growing number. A few years ago, as many as 1 in 6 adults were classified as “ever-users” — someone who vapes on an infrequent basis, with about 4% of us vaping on a regular basis. The real problem has been the exploding use among our young people. In 2018, 21 % of high school students acknowledged current use of e-cigarettes (almost double from the prior year), and around 5 % of middle school students were vaping. Staggering.

If these numbers continue to rise, we need to know what kind of effect e-cigarettes will have on the health of our children. As “Big Tobacco” has long known, it’s all about the nicotine. This chemical hits most of the pleasure points in our brains and is extremely addictive — some substance abusers tell us that it’s more addictive than cocaine. By itself, nicotine has not been proven to increase the risk of cancer or heart/lung problems. It’s the vehicle— the delivery system. With traditional cigarettes, it’s the tars and other chemicals that kill us. With vaping, those things aren’t present, but a multitude of chemicals are being inhaled along with the nicotine. It’s too early to assess the cancer risk of e-cigarettes, since it takes as much as 20 years for some things to declare themselves. As-

bestos is a good example. However, there is growing evidence that vaping reduces lung function and may be associated with chronic cough and asthma among adolescents. Earlier, we mentioned “flavorings.”

When these chemicals are vaporized, a host of other agents are created, some of which are known pulmonary irritants and others which are associated with several lung diseases. The devices themselves can prove dangerous, with documented instances of explosions that lead to burns and chemical injuries. In the past few weeks, there have

been dozens of reports of seizures among young vapers, probably due to accidental or intentional enhancement of nicotine concentrations. We don’t know the effects of e-cigarette exposure during pregnancy, but there is evidence that passive exposure produces measureable levels of nicotine in the non-vaper.

What should really concern us is the intentional creation of nicotine-dependence among our young people by these manufacturers. By attempting to “normalize” smoking behavior, we’re going to see an increasing incidence of vaping, with its

known and unknown dangers, and a potential increase in the use of “combustible” tobacco — traditional cigarettes.

None of this is any good, and as parents, we have to be vigilant. In addition to tobacco-free school campuses, we need to insist they be vaping-free as well. We have to know about this stuff and be advocates for our children. And we have to talk with them. A long winter’s nap?

T

he days are shorter, and the weather is cooler. Winter is on the way. For most humans, the change of seasons is no big deal, at least to our survival. We simply change the setting on our thermostats and go about our business. But for nature’s tenants, the coming of winter can mean a change in existence.

Most people think that hibernation is the primary means by which animals cope with the cold. Indeed, black bears will become dormant during the coldest part of winter, but even they will awaken if disturbed. True hibernation involves the slowing of heart rate and breathing; the metabolism decreases to conserve energy.

Some bats go into this state when they hibernate. Other mammals also “hibernate,”

but their fur also becomes thicker during winter, and they store up fat reserves that act as insulation. Furthermore, the winters in our region are not known for long, sustained periods of sub-freezing temperatures. In fact, it is not uncommon for a few days or weeks in December or January to see temperatures above 70oF. During such warm periods many animals come out of their dormant state, only to return when the weather cools down.

Birds have feathers to keep them warm, although some molt (shed old feathers as they grow new ones) out of their bright summer colors into their “winter plumage.” Of course, some species of birds migrate to other regions for the winter. You may see our resident birds on cold mornings looking “fat and fluffy.” This is because the feathers are standing erect and creating air spaces close to the skin to trap body heat, just as “goose pimples” on your skin raise your hair for the same reason.

What about the animals that do not have fur coats or feather wraps for the winter?

Amphibians and reptiles have only their bare skin (scaly or otherwise) to separate them from the cold. In fact, some of them dig into the soil or just under leaf litter… and then freeze. These creatures produce sugars or proteins that act as an anti-freeze to protect the cells from harmful ice crystals that could form in the blood and body tissues. In this frozen condition the critters are in a literal state of suspended animation. Spring thaws, or even early winter thaws, warm them back to an active state.

Insects that survive the winter employ similar tactics of freez-

ing and thawing.

Most insects with complex life cycles spend the winter in a protective egg or pupa (sometimes in a cocoon). However, one type of local butterfly, the mourning cloak, actually overwinters as an adult. And amazingly, one insect heads South of the Border for its winter existence; the monarch butterfly undertakes an incredible migration of thousands of miles, coming to rest in parts of Mexico.

Plants are even more vulnerable to seasonal changes…or are they? Obviously, they cannot get up and move, so migration is not an option. But just because we do not see green above the ground does not mean that the species are not adapted to winter’s wiles. ‘Annual’ plants produce seeds and die off. Perennial plants may also produce

By winter, there is usually less moisture available to plants because groundwater can freeze. The tactic of some trees is to shut down the leaves and get rid of them.

After all, those broad, flat leaves, when exposed to the colder, sunny days of fall and winter could give off more water than the tree could recoup from the soil. Still other types of trees (evergreens) typically have leaves that are modified into long, thin needles with a waxy coating. This is another means of reducing water loss from the leaves. Hollies and magnolias do not have needles, but they do have stiff, waxy leaves to protect the moisture content.

Our native wildlife is adapted to an environment of change, whether daily, long-term, or seasonal. Plants and animals survive and reproduce around the harsh conditions of winter. We humans have it easy; we add more layers of clothing. Some move (migrate?) to points south for the winter. There are times when I really wish we could go the hibernation route, but since that is unlikely I’ll just turn up the thermostat and wait for spring.

“If I love myself…”

B

y the time you read this article, many events have continued (i.e., COVID-19) or have been settled (i.e., the election). During these periods of events, I believe a relatively simple and profound question can be utilized to keep us centered and our “voices” maintained: “If I genuinely/truly love myself, would I do this (i.e., behavior and/or thought)?”

During a counseling session, a client came to the conclusion of asking herself this question every time she had to make a choice about her life. I began to use this question in my personal/professional life.

Thus, let us dissect the question. What does the question mean and how do you apply it?

First, the question is a condition (an if-then form); thus, one is utilizing their critical thinking skills as they explore and examine the next steps in acting out their responses/replies to the events in their lives. Be mindful “critical thinking” is unable to be “criticism” (the extreme of self-loathing). Critical thinking is pausing to use reasonable/rationale, wise-mind and being informed to come to a conclusion prior to making a choice or thought.

Second, the qualifier — “genuinely/truly” — I intentionally used the qualifier due to our nature at times of being self-centered and other dysfunctional/destructive sense of loving self, thus, the word of having discernment will be the key to the qualifier. Discernment implies the ability to “discriminate, acute judgment and understanding” — simply put, to know (being aware) the difference. Therefore, “genuinely/truly” are the truest sense of self.

Third, what is love? In this article, I want to define love from the “agape” approach toward self — unconditional positive regard. Hence, genuinely loving self would be acceptance of who I am, what I am, and what I am becoming. Often, I discover how much we fight our sense of self (fear, guilt/shame, doubt, etc.) by our defense mechanisms. A client expressed that he/ she came to acceptance of “I am broken.”

Acknowledging/recognizing the brokenness set them free, no more overcompensation, insecurities, defense mechanisms, etc. They were able to begin to “choose” their thoughts/choices, vs being directed by their reflexes/reactions and “wiring.”

Fourth, self is a given. However, I re-examined the word “myself” — did you notice the pre to self, “my.” The implication is that

Depositphotos.com we own self. Remember, as children, we would set ownership or fight over toys, objects, people, etc. You may be dealing with it now. I think the bigger point is when are you going to begin to own self? Ownership takes all of who you are, what you are and what you’re becoming. Think about it; you’re unable to own (or buy) a partial car, house, people, etc. When you make a deal or transaction, it often includes all.

Returning to one of the previous articles, “informed consent” is to be fully aware. It’s hard to own or change something, if you’re unaware. Being aware of self will be a key to ownership – myself.

Finally, the last component of the question (would I do this?) is the “action or choice.” Therefore, if we set up the question, as a “cause-effect,” If I can be true to self, to be/being with unconditional love, what actions/choices do I need to do?

How do you choose to love self? You can

be “banker” and do a cost/benefit (credit/ debit); you can be spiritual/doctrinal and conceptually love with grace or law; you can base it on your past (raised by your family-of-origin) and repeat the same type of generational transmission of loving self; you can use science (biology) and love self with conditions (reinforcement/punishment), or a combination of all the above.

The basic fundamental in life is basic lifestyle of needs (i.e., diet, exercise and sleep, along with food, clothing, shelter and safety). Thus, when you are exploring options on how to answer the question, it’s a choice to choose on how you love self and carry it through being sure you meet your basic lifestyle of needs.

As we’ve done in previous articles, the following are thoughts: • Self-love is not selfish; you cannot truly love another until you know how to love yourself.

• Be proud of who you are, and not ashamed of how someone else sees you.

• You can’t pour from an empty cup.

Take care of yourself first.

• Put yourself at the top of your to-do list every single day and the rest will fall into place.

• You were born to be real, not perfect.

Scale insects

I

f you have some trees or shrubs in your landscape that have not been doing well in recent years, and have branch dieback, small leaves, or poor color, you may have an infestation of scale insects. The fall and winter months

are good times to inspect the trunks and limbs to look for these.

There are many different species of scale insects, but they generally fall into two categories: armored scale and soft scale. The major differences between the two are that

armored scale have a hard, thin protective “lid” which completely covers them. This lid can easily be separated from the body of the insect by using a thumbnail or a knife blade. Soft scale, on the other hand, have a thick, soft, waxy covering which would have to be dissolved with alcohol to separate it from the body of the insect.

Armored scale insects tend to be smaller, more flattened, and many times more difficult to detect. These include many foliage feeders and those that feed on the trunks, branches, and twigs. They can range in color from white to yellow, red, brown, grey or black. Some species of armored scale may have additional white, waxy filaments which have been secreted and these are easily seen with the unaided eye.

Soft scale insects are almost hemispherical, and are usually much larger and easier to see. They are more commonly found feeding on stems. In addition, sooty mold, a black fungus which grows on the sugary secretions of several insects, is often present on the plant infested with soft scale.

Regardless of the species of scale, they all have a similar life cycle. Eggs are laid under the adult female scale. These eggs are protected under the covering. After the eggs are laid, the female dies. Soon after, the eggs hatch and the immature scale called “crawlers” leave the protection of the covering and move about on the plant to find a feeding site. Once the feeding site is found, they insert a thread-like mouth part into the plant to begin feeding. As feeding continues, the scale reabsorbs its legs into the body and begins secreting waxy substances to form the protective coating. Male scales pupate and emerge

as small gnat-like insects which locate the sedentary females and mate. After mating, the male dies. There may be one to many generations each year depending on the species.

So why have I told you all these details?

Understanding the life cycle of an insect is the first step to controlling them. There are three different types of insecticides used to control scale insects: contacts, systemics, and horticultural oils.

Contacts are applied to infested plant parts. These must come in some contact with the insect. In the case of scale insects, contacts are only effective against the unprotected crawler stage.

Systemics may be applied to the soil or to the foliage of the plant, depending on the product. They move into the plant tissue and are transported through the tissues. These kill the insects as they feed on the leaves. Many systemics also have contact activity. Systemics, such as Merit (imidacloprid) are not effective against scale that just feed on the stem and not leaves.

Horticultural oils are used primarily during the winter months, although there are some light, summer oils that can be used during the growing season. If oils are applied during high temperatures and even temperatures that are too cold, they can damage the plant. Oils work on all stages of the insect; however, complete coverage is essential. These oils are mixed with water and applied through a sprayer. When the water evaporates, a thin coating of oil is left behind. If the insect is completely covered, it will suffocate. On evergreen plants, thorough coverage is almost impossible.

Oils may sometimes be mixed with contacts or systemics to increase effectiveness. Oils should not be used if freezing temperatures are expected within 24 hours of application. Make sure to read the information on the label about temperature restrictions.

The most susceptible stage of the scale insect to insecticides is the crawler stage and many organic insecticides will also work well against these. You can time your sprays when crawler activity is high using a simple monitoring technique. Wrap several infested limbs with black electrical tape (sticky side out so that is not damaged when removed). Apply a thin coating of petroleum jelly to the tape. Crawlers will become trapped on the tape and will be easily seen against the dark background.

By checking your traps each week, you can target your sprays to get the biggest bang for your buck. You may have to reapply the petroleum jelly to your traps every month or so.

Even if you control the scale, the dead

adult scale will still be present for a long period of time. To see if you have killed the insects, flip the lid off some scales and look at the scale’s body. Dead scale will be dark and shriveled. Live scale will be yellow, orange or red, plump and juicy.

When using any pesticide, always read and follow label directions.

Scale insects that are common in the landscape are gloomy scale on red maple trees, cottony maple scale, Indian wax scale on holly trees and shrubs, tea scale on Camellia and hollies, white peach scale on peaches, flowering cherries, and cherry laurel, Lecanium scale on oaks, Euonymus scale, and pine needle scale. What it means to be self-sufficient in York County

A

s the backbone of our new issue-focused model, UWYC has set a bold goal to help 3,000 York County families achieve financial stability by 2030. As a core tenant of this goal,

UWYC partnered with the United Way Association of South Carolina to research what it means to truly be financially stable in York County. We set forth with the question, what does a family really need

to earn to make ends meet?

According to the report released by the United Way Association of South Carolina, for a family of three (one working parent, one preschooler, and one schoolaged child) living in York County, the annual wage required to be self-sufficient is $50, 746, compared to the annual wage from the same study in 2016, that found the same family needed to make $43,775 to make ends meet. According to this data, the annual wages needed to be self-sufficient in York County have gone up by almost 17% since 2016.

The Self-Sufficiency Standard for South Carolina 20201 is a comprehensive, credible, and user-friendly tool. This measure calculates how much income a family must earn to meet basic needs, with the amount varying by family composition and where they live. Over the past 23 years the Standard has been calculated for 41 states as well as the District of Columbia and New York City. Its use has transformed the way policies and programs for low-income workers are structured and has contributed to a greater understanding of what it takes to have adequate income to meet one’s basic needs in the United States.

At the heart of this report is the Self-Sufficiency Standard itself. This measure describes how much income families of various sizes and compositions need to make ends meet without public or private assistance in each county in South Carolina. The Self-Sufficiency Standard is a measure of income adequacy that is based on the costs of basic needs for working families: housing, child care, food, health care, transportation, and miscellaneous items, as well as the cost of taxes and the impact of tax credits. In addition, this report provides for each family type, in each county, the amount of emergency savings required to meet needs during a period of unemployment or other emergencies.

The official poverty measure, developed half a century ago, is now methodologically out of date and no longer accurately measures the ability to provide for oneself and one’s family — at best it measures “deprivation.” Throughout South Carolina, the Self-Sufficiency Standard shows that incomes well above the official federal poverty thresholds are nevertheless far below

what is necessary to meet families’ basic needs. Note that these budgets are “bare-bones,” with just enough allotted to meet basic needs, but no extras. For example, the food budget is only for groceries. It does not allow for any takeout or restaurant food, not even a pizza or an ice cream.

United Way of York County is looking forward to using the results of the study to help clients of workforce training programs seeking paths to self-sufficiency, or those in financial literacy programs to prepare realistic budgets. The study can also be used to inform local employers striving to pay a living wage, and to advise policymakers and legislators seeking to ensure that basic needs are affordable for South Carolina families.

Equipped with this knowledge, coupled with the unknown long-term economic impact of COVID-19, it is clear that many families in York County are struggling to make ends meet. We believe that our work can help make lasting change for the citizen of York County by leading 3,000 families on the path to financial stability by 2030. Looking Up

Our place in space among the galaxies

T

wo months ago, this column was about stars, and how they form in groups, rather than singly. Well, the same is true of galaxies.

Galaxies can be thought of as star cities.

Small galaxies have millions of stars, and larger galaxies can have a million million stars, which we call a trillion in the United States. Our own galaxy, the Milky Way, has some one hundred thousand million stars.

Galaxies come in different types. Our Milky Way is an example of a spiral galaxy. Spirals can have a central bar. The openness of the spiral arms, and the tightness with which they are wound, are de-

termining factors in their classification.

Our own galaxy is classified as an SBb. The SB means that it is a barred spiral and the small b is an indication of the looseness of the arms and their brightness compared to the central core of our galaxy. We’ve never been outside of the Milky Way to take a picture of it, so its classification is still a bit uncertain.

Besides spirals, galaxies can be elliptical (i.e. football-shaped), irregular, or peculiar. Irregular galaxies are stubby, looking as if they are all arms with no central bulge.

Peculiar is the name given to galaxies that don’t conform to the three main classifica-

tions, usually because of gravitational interaction with another galaxy.

Using the Hubble Space Telescope to look far away allows us to look at galaxies of the past, when the Universe was much younger than today. We see that the galaxies that formed long ago were different than the galaxies of today. These early galaxies were smaller and there are few distinct ellipticals or spirals. These early galaxies were more chaotic and tended to be clumpier than today’s galaxies.

We don’t see a lot of stars between galaxies, but there can be material. Our Milky Way and its nearest neighbors, the

irregular galaxies the Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, have the Magellanic Stream between them. The Magellanic Stream is a long arm of high-velocity gas clouds extending from the Magellanic Clouds towards the Milky Way and is thought to have originated hundreds of millions of years ago during an interaction between the Milky Way and these two other galaxies.

Groups of galaxies are called galaxy clusters. The Milky Way is part of the aptly-named Local Group, of about eighty galaxies. We don’t know exactly how many galaxies are in the Local Group because the Milky Way itself blocks our view of some of them. The Local Group consists mostly of small elliptical dwarf galaxies, but it does include three large spiral galaxies of note: the Milky Way, the Andromeda Galaxy or M31, and the Triangulum Galaxy or M33.

The Local Group is part of the Local Supercluster, which is enormous. Because the center of the Local Supercluster is the Virgo Cluster, the entire supercluster is sometimes called the Virgo Supercluster.

At least 100 galaxy groups and clusters make up the Virgo Supercluster. Recently, a study has indicated that our supercluster is just one lobe of even larger Laniakea Supercluster of galaxies.

Stephan’s Quintet is a beautiful group of five galaxies located in the constellation of Pegasus. Such smaller groups of galaxies are called compact galaxy groups and Stephan’s Quintet was the first one discovered and is the most studied of them. Four of the five galaxies are part of the same group and are gravitationally interacting with each other. The fifth, the one that appears largest, is actually about seven times closer than the other four. The four galaxies in the group will probably eventually merge with each other. yc Carole Holmberg is the Planetarium Manager at the Museum of York County. It’s time for the Friday Arts Project Art Party

F

or the past four years, Friday Arts Project, a local arts organization in Rock Hill, has hosted its Art Party the weekend before Thanksgiving. As with everything else this year, Friday Arts has been forced to adapt the event for our current reality. I caught up with Friday Arts Director, Kirk Irwin to talk to him about the history of Art Party and what we can expect from it this year.

Chris Fox: What is Art Party? How did it begin?

Kirk Irwin: Art Party is an art experience that occurs the weekend before Thanksgiving (this year it is November 20-21). You can stroll through Old Town Rock Hill, and take in a juried exhibition of artwork installed in various business locations. The weekend is punctuated by short films & comedy, an artist market, open studios & galleries, a performing arts expo, a drawing competition, and seminars. The weekend ends with our Shindig

featuring live music and food. The event features nationally recognized artists, as well as emerging, local creators; working in an array of mediums from ceramics to photography, oils, watercolor and mixed media. We think this is an appropriate avenue to showcase and celebrate the arts community of Rock Hill — SC’s first Cultural Development District.

Art Party grew out of Rock Hill artist Harriet Goode’s annual studio and gallery sale. Each year she and other local artists opened their studios to encourage art gifts for the holidays. In 2016, she invited Friday Arts Project to help expand the effort into what has become a more encompassing celebration of Rock Hill’s arts community.

CF: What have been some highlights in the past four years?

KI: I think there have been several things that have been highlights. One is the consistent participation of local Rock Hill businesses to host art and allow their spaces to be used for the advancement of the creative arts. Out of that, the second highlight has been local business patrons setting up Art Party to be a significant space in offering prize money for the juried competition that was started 3 years ago; $9,000 has been awarded to 9 artists out of a field of almost 50 local, regional, and national artists. This just shows the desire of our community to advance the creative arts and take it seriously. The last highlight has been allowing our local artists to showcase their art and ideas. We as Friday Arts Project see ourselves as the “foreman” of the Art Party event and the arts community as the team to pull the experience off.

We love the arts we want to see it grow here in Rock Hill.

CF: How is Art Party being adapted this year into Art Party: Abridged?

KI: Art Party: Abridged is the Art Party we are doing in the wake of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic upon our world, nation, and community. We realized as the summer progressed that we would not be able to do a full Art Party. The time and effort that it takes to pull off the event was something we could not risk considering the possible outcomes. Even with the realization that we would not be able to do a full Art Party, we still wanted to do something to advance the creative arts during the regular Art Party weekend, and thus Art Party: Abridged was born. There will be art up in a limited number of businesses and we are hoping to have some live music playing one night as well.

Call for artists: Storm Drain Art

he Arts Council of York County is implementing a new public art project centered around local water heritage and water quality.

The ACYC seeks design concepts from

regional artists to enhance selected storm drains in Old Town Rock Hill.

Selected artists will turn their concepts into reality in the form of small-scale, semi-permanent, outdoor murals that

adorn Old Town storm drains, raising awareness and educating the public about the effects of stormwater runoff on water quality.

Why Storm Drains? Storm drains lead directly to our waterways. Each time it rains, trash and pollutants on our streets are washed into the storm drains and are carried into our rivers, streams, and lakes. Stormwater pollution can significantly degrade our fish and wildlife habitat, our drinking water, and recreational opportunities. By painting Rock Hill’s storm drains, we are reminding residents that our neighborhoods are all connected to our rivers, streams, and lakes.

The Storm Drain Art project is open to artists 18 and older who live in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region. Preference will be given to artists who reside in York County. Submissions will only be accepted through the Arts Council’s online portal through Friday, January 8, 2021. The selected designs will be painted over a three-day period beginning on Earth Day, April 22, 2021, weather permitting. There are no entry fees to participate. Guidelines and submission

information can be found at www.yorkcountyarts.org/stormdrainart.

A committee of judges will select two designs that are graphically bold with clear messages relating to the suggested themes, and with the potential to engage a wide range of audiences. All proposals will be evaluated on artistic merit and unique storm drain integration. General scoring categories will include artistic qualifications and previous work examples (if available), educational message, creative use of space, overall appeal, and place of residence.

Award: $200 per drain with half of the payment to be issued in advance, and half upon completion. If the design is created by a group of artists, the $200 payment is to be divided between the members of the group.

Law Navigating The Law

The law that saved Christmas The first-sale doctrine says that once a work that is embodied in a material object, such as a book or CD, is sold, the copyright owner’s interest in the object is over. That allows us as owners of the book, CD, DVD, etc., to give them away or even sell them without paying a royalty. The rule allows libraries to lend books without paying a royalty. But, it does not give us the right to make copies of the book, CD or Elvis Presley commemorative plate. That would be a copyright violation. You would find not the sheriff’s deputy but the federal marshall at your door serving you with a Summons and Complaint, because copyright law is federal law and they will make a federal case out of it.

Imagine what life would be like without the first-sale doctrine. Every time you wanted to sell your old books or CDs at a yard sale, or wanted to give them to a

or purposes of this discussion, let’s say that a relative of yours has passed away and in his or her will they have left you, “All of my music and musical stuff including my records, CDs, 8 track tapes, cassette tapes, iTunes, sheet music, Elvis Presley commemorative plates, Hard Day’s Night DVD, guitar, fiddle, flute and bongos.”

You schedule a meeting with the executor of the estate to pick up all those things. But, technically, we don’t have executors anymore. The South Carolina Probate Code changed the name to “personal representative” back about 1990. It is a change we could have done without.

The title, “executor,” has been in use for nearly a thousand years and we are all familiar with it and have a rough idea what an executor does. After 25 years of using “personal representative,” the public is still much more familiar with “executor.”

Changing the title has served to only cause confusion. But I digress.

You pack your inheritance into your car, download the iTunes on a thumb drive, and head home to enjoy the bequest, though you wonder where you might find an 8 track tape player. A few weeks go by and you answer a knock on your door to find a sheriff’s deputy who serves you with a Summons and Complaint. Apple is suing you and the personal representative for

friend or family member, you would have to negotiate with the owner of the copyright the amount of royalty you would pay. Libraries could not lend books without collecting a royalty. Here’s the worst case scenario: You’ve purchased the DVD How to Train Your Dragon to put under the Christmas Tree for your child who “really, really, really” loves that movie.

She shrieks with delight when she opens it and begs, “Mommy can we watch it now, please, please, please??!!” Your reply is, “before you watch it you have to give me a buck and a half to cover the royalty.”

Unlike CDs, record albums, DVDs, cassettes, and 8 tracks, when you pay to download a song from iTunes, Amazon, or any of the on-line music vendors, you are not buying the song. Rather, you are paying for a license to enjoy the song for your own personal use on your own device and the license is non-transferrable. The next time you download a song, and before automatically clicking “Agree” to “Terms and Conditions”, take a minute (or an hour) to read them but put on a crash helmet first because you will be banging your head against the wall before the end of the first paragraph. Buried in that very obtuse document you will find that you are buying a non-transferable license. That means you cannot burn the song to a disc to give to a friend and you cannot bequeath the song as part of your estate.

You might ask, “I give away and sometimes sell books, CDs, tapes and records which are all copyrighted materials. Does the same restriction apply?” Fortunately, it does not and it is the result of what is called the “first-sale doctrine” which was created by a 1908 U.S. Supreme Court ruling but was codified and made a part of the U.S. Copyright Act of 1976.

ur last two photography columns have been about film photography practices as applied to digital photography. As a result, I’ve received a greater number of film related questions than usual. To help those who might have the same questions, I thought I’d address my two most frequently asked film questions.

I’m often asked how to put grandpa’s old film camera back to use. With a new to me old camera, I go to www.butkus.org for old camera manuals. This site is a great jumping off place for operating manuals, historical reference, repair shops, replacement parts, and more. Once I’ve gotten my research done, I start with, does the camera contain film. If it does, I check the camera’s manual to learn how to rewind the film in hopes of salvaging any images already exposed on the film.

My next question is, does the camera use a battery? Batteries can supply power to light meters, film advance and motor drives, and other camera features. Batteries left in old cameras can swell and leak very corrosive potassium hydroxide. The corrosion is usually white to green and it builds up on the outside of the battery and on nearby metal. The battery residue is very corrosive, getting this residue in your eye could cause serious pain and damage. Additionally, some old batteries PAGE 20

contain Mercury and should be disposed of accordingly.

Once the battery is carefully removed, the corrosive residue can be neutralized using vinegar or lemon juice and cotton swabs. With the residue neutralized, I scratch the surface of the camera’s battery contacts with sandpaper to help ensure a new battery can make good contact. A side note, batteries don’t have to be decades old to leak, this can happen to modern electronics and in a relatively short period of time, so do check your battery powered gadgets. Many old cameras used batteries that have been replaced by newer battery technology; a quick internet search will lead to modern replacements. Often, new batteries will not match the voltage of older batteries, this will cause battery powered camera light meters to operate inaccurately. If this is happens, either an external light meter or the Sunny 16 Rule, that we’ve previously discussed, can help determine a proper exposure. Starting in the 1930s until the 1960s, some cameras used a Selenium Cell to power their internal light meter, which is, in essence, an early solar cell. Many of the automatic exposure cameras from those years utilized Selenium Cells. I have decades old Selenium Cell cameras whose meters are still working.

After I’ve addressed any battery issues, I

check the film advance lever or knob to see if it moves, and if it cocks the shutter. Never force any camera levers, dial or knobs, they can be rather delicate. If a shutter does not seem to work, I go back to the battery issue.

Some cameras must have sufficient battery power, or its shutter becomes locked into one speed or into a closed position. If it’s not a battery issue, I’m usually confronted with a lens or shutter that has frozen up due to its lubrication becominbg dry and brittle. Disassembly and lubrication by someone who knows what they are doing is needed at this point. Lubricants used on old cameras can vary wildly, for example, the manufacturer of one camera brand I own used whale oil as their preferred lubrication, and reportedly, they still do so.

There are still many camera repair shops and individual technicians that do repairs and what is commonly referred to as CLA’d which stands for Cleaned, Lubed and Adjusted. The list is too long and too specific to be of use here, so again, an internet search for particular brands and models would be needed.

The second most frequent film photography question I receive is about film availability and getting it developed.

While there are not as many film stocks available as there once was, there are still plenty of choices. For a 36-exposure roll

of black and white 35mm film expect to pay $4 to $12 a roll depending your taste in film. If you want to develop your own film, again, there is no shortage of chemistry or developing equipment. I find the best pricing with online retailers such as Adorama, B&H or Biggs Camera in Charlotte. There are many good photo labs online that process film. I don’t process my color film, so I send that to www.thedarkroom.com. By way of example, they cost me $11 per roll for color or black and white film. That price includes downloads of scanned negatives, your negatives mailed back to you and free shipping of film to the lab. Locally, Biggs Camera in Charlotte still operates a photo lab.

Hopefully, this little bit of information will help spark a desire to dust off grandpas’ or grandma’s or your old film camera and run a roll of film through it. The Local Racing Scene

Getting rich as a race promoter

I

’m sure, as a racing fan, you’ve seen either on TV or in person, the stands have been full for the bigger events. Locally, dirt tracks stage a few big money paying events a year. So, the first thoughts are, these promoters are getting rich. All they have to do is open the gates and the fans and money flow in, what an easy way to make money. But wait, let’s back up a little.

Perhaps 2020 is a bad way to look at this money-making business. Racing during the first part of the season, in many cases, was done without fans in the stands. Well, so much for the cash flow. Even without fans, lots of work still had to be done, not only for that big race, but constantly.

Maintenance of the track, buildings, the property, taxes, etc., still had to be paid for.

As the season went on, slowly fans were allowed in, with restrictions. With so many out of work, that extra entertainment cash was limited. It hurt the bottom line for virtually all tracks. But the bills still had to be

paid. So, what does the promoter do, if he has any savings? He dips into it to survive until the atmosphere changes.

So, now it’s back to somewhat regular racing. Typically, a season’s schedule has been planned at the beginning of the year.

The big touring professional racing series have been booked in. And any smart promoter will start his advertising ASAP to give fans a heads up on what is coming during any given season. Advertising is not cheap, but it’s part of running a successful race track. If there are media people who show interest in racing and attend the events and do some writeups, that’s all a plus for the track — it’s basically free advertising. Problem is, there aren’t too many papers or press people covering racing like years ago. The sports pages are filled with high school, college, and professional ball sports. Racing news and results get a little space if it’s available. Today, there is Facebook among other online outlets for racing

info. One of the biggest things that helps put fans in the stands is word of mouth.

When a track promotes good, exciting racing, fans will spread the word to their friends and others.

So, what is the No.1 thing or person who hurts racing? It’s the weather forecast on Monday calling for possible showers on Saturday night. Right off the bat, many will look at alternatives to racing. When that night is in doubt, the promoter does not stop. Maintenance will continue, track preparation will be started, food will be ordered for the concession stands, a whole list of things that must be done in case the weather turns out to be great. If his advertising budget can handle it, local radio shows will advertise the upcoming event — again, not a cheap thing to do. And if it does rain, that’s lost money.

Payrolls have to be met. The promoter has a regular list of employees on his staff who work during the week. Running a race

track is not a one-night affair. There is a constant drain on funds. Many tracks over the years have closed and never reopened because of the expenses of either owning or promoting a track. In most cases, promoters lease a track from the actual owner.

That lease payment does not stop because of rain, or other reasons a track cannot run on its scheduled night. And, while some arrangements can be made with the owner, for the most part, promoters are obliged to make their lease payment.

So, let’s look at the bottom line. Promoters do not live that rich and famous lifestyle many might think. They do it because they love the sport. Some might make a living; many do not. If you see a track making improvements, that promoter is putting his profits back into the track for his fans and the competitors and investing in his and the track’s future. Some tracks may look the same year after year — lousy food, not the best conditions in the restrooms, and that list goes on and on. Those are the tracks that fail.

Possibly the last thing that makes for a successful track and a happy promoter are the divisions he runs and the racers who support those divisions. If a track has to promote “gimmick” racing, they are not doing the racers and fans any good. While it may last for a while, true racing fans want good, competitive racing with teams and drivers they can cheer for and follow on a weekly basis.

York County has about the strongest contingent of race teams, and it’s because of the tracks they can race at. It seems almost every week, a new driver has caught the eyes of the fans. From Rock Hill to Fort Mill, Lake Wylie to McConnells, York County is producing the stars of tomorrow, as they join already established divers such as Clover’s Ross Bailes, Johnny Pursley and Travis Steele, Rocks Hill’s Jeremy Steele, Brian Mullis, York driver Bubba Sutton and his son, Grayson, to name but a few. Follow these drivers and you are seeing the best of the best on a weekly basis at tracks such as Cherokee Speedway, Lancaster Speedway and Carolina Speedway.

any writing coaches advocate keeping journals.

Do you journal regularly? Do you enjoy the process?

We tend to think of them as daily diaries, but journals take many forms: personal, gratitude, prayer, health, dreams, and others. These five journals will help you uncover writing prompts.

Personal journal

Some people end their business day by creating a list of things to accomplish the next day. This form of brain dumping helps them leave work and enjoy the evening. Personal journaling can work in the same way.

Journaling before you are too tired to think helps you to remember important elements and oddities from the day. If you saw a strange outfit or a roving car, you might record the information under the date in your journal. Those are two prompts for writing. You might develop a few plots from your daily habit. Get the idea?

You might record odd aches and pains too, but put those thoughts in a health journal if you keep one.

Gratitude Journal

Practicing gratitude will make you more joyful and less focused on the negatives in your life. Take the challenge to write three things, morning and evening, that you are grateful for. They should be different every day but can be simple: I’m grateful to be alive today. I’m thankful my family is safe.

I’m grateful that we are buying a new car.

Many people join their prayer and gratitude journals.

Prayer journals not only let us record our prayers to remember them and consistently pray, they also provide the opportunity to observe the answers to our prayers.

Our pastor’s wife taught me that someone dying can be an answer to our prayers for healing. Many of us believe after a person dies, they are no longer in pain. We can take solace in that. Journaling is a safe place to grieve and remember the past.

Start writing your health journal today.

Use whatever paper you have. Don’t put off getting started because you need to buy a new pen or new journal.

Record your exercise for the day.

You might choose to record what you eat throughout the day. That exercise reveals a lot!

Record anything abnormal, such as moles, rashes, sneezing, and coughs. This practice allows you to track when a symptom occurred and perhaps determine the trigger or cause.

If your aches and pains, bleeding gums, hearing, vision or eye troubles become more frequent, keep these in your health journal. More or less frequent urination and bowel movements are also important to tell your doctor.

Record your medicines, doctors’ visits and reports, and regular measures, such as blood pressure, temperature, blood sugar, etc. This journal is the central place to keep everything about your mental and physical health.

If you remember your dreams, you might find themes or determine what the dreams reveal about you.

The best way to remember and compare these dreams is to write them down as soon as you wake. If you wake in the middle of the night from a dream, write it down. If you fall asleep in the afternoon and dream, record what you remember.

Dreams can provide thoughts and images that bring life to your writing.

Periodically review your journals. I have mentioned before in this column a lady who reads her personal journal from the previous year on January 1. She reflects on the wins, joys, challenges, and opportunities, as well as the way God has moved in her life and shown her opportunities and answers.

When you review your journals, you might want to note certain entries for reference. You can do this using a spreadsheet. In the left column write the topic or keyword. In the second column, write which journal and page number. Beside that, enter the date. In the fourth column, list other topics from the entry that you might search to find what you need.

Journaling guidelines

Journals are honest, emotional resources for later reference and writing.

Sometimes you can lift the words directly from your journal.

If you want to write a book, be careful to draw from the material but not to publish what appears to be a journal. Write a story instead of a list of entries.

Write what you think and experience in your journals. Don’t worry if you are right or wrong. Write what seems interesting.

Write the thought while it’s fresh, because if it gets away, it’s probably gone.

Sidecar a great holiday classic cocktail

T

he holidays are here, and it’s time to pull out some of the recipes I reserve for special occasions. The Sidecar is one of them. As one of those classic cocktails with somewhat ambiguous origins, it always makes for great stories to entertain guests while mixing. One version calls the Sidecar the natural heir to the 19th century-era cocktail from New Orleans called the Brandy Crusta, which is a delicious offering in its own right, made from brandy, orange curacao, bitters and lemon juice, and served with a sugared rim.

The other version claims that on a cold, wet night during WWI an army captain pulled up to the famous Harry’s Bar in Paris after having traveled a long distance in the sidecar of a motorcycle. Wet and shiv-

ering, he asked the barman for a drink to warm him. It being war, and that being hell and all, there were precious few ingredients on hand. So, the barman used cognac, Cointreau and lemon. Et voila: The Sidecar was born. That version of history could be complete hooey, but I’m sticking with it, at least until the holidays are over. It’s a good enough story to tell so my guests don’t notice how long it takes to make them.

The Sidecar is my go-to wintertime drink because, thanks to the cognac, it does a great job of warming you up. And speaking of cognac, it’s going to be pricey, so here’s a buying tip: First off, it should always come from France. If the bottle you’re looking at doesn’t, what kind of crazy liquor store are you shopping in?

Cognac comes in three basic varieties: V.S. (very special), V.S.O.P. (very superior old pale), and X.O. (extra old - sometimes called Napoleon). Why, you wonder, are the varietal designations in English, which is so very un-French? Consider that the predominant traders of cognac in the 18th century were English.

The V.S., or very special, is not very special at all. It burns like hell fire going down. If you’re going to cook with cognac, buy this. Otherwise move along. A quality V.S.O.P. is best for mixing drinks like the Sidecar. Almost all cognacs are blends of different years and vineyards, and a quality V.S.O.P. blend will do just fine for mixing. The X.O. is a splurge. So, pour it into a glass neat, swirl, sniff and sip by the fire.

Incidentally, if you see “Champagne Cognac” on a label, it merely denotes a blend of the eau de vie of the two regions of Champagne that are part of the six regions, in total, allowed to market their spirits as cognac. Of course, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t buy that bottle. It’s probably delicious. If your wallet wants to do a bit of exploring, look for some of the less commercially known brands that are still blends but are sourced from a single vineyard. They’re probably delicious too.

You may be able to find dried kiwi fruit at the grocer. It has a beautiful green color, so cut the wheels into quarters. Alternate them on an extra-long cocktail pick with dried cranberries. Place the red and green pick across the rim.

Recipe 2 oz. V.S.O.P. cognac 1 oz. Cointreau 1 oz. fresh squeezed lemon juice Pour all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice and shake vigorously. Strain into a glass and serve.

Glass and garnish This drink really deserves the proper glass. You’re going to spend some dough on a good bottle of cognac and the Cointreau, so dress it up nice. In a pinch, you can use a martini glass, but since I’m fussy about glassware, I really like serving mine in a stemless martini glass or a coupe.

Here are two ideas for a holiday garnish.

To honor the Sidecar’s Brandy Crusta heritage, take a lemon wedge and moisten two spots (about an inch long apiece) on opposite sides of the rim of the glass and dip one in red sugar and the other in green. (You can find those holiday sugars over in the baking aisle at the local grocer.)

The Rosenwald Fund and Jefferson School

W

hile organizing and arranging recently donated school photos, Archives Specialist Carleigh Isbell spent time researching the Jefferson School annual and related photographs.

She composed her findings and wrote this month’s article.

The Jefferson School was built in 1888 through the efforts of the Wesley M. E. Church. The original structure included five rooms and was located at the end of West Jefferson Street in York. In 1903, the first graduating class consisted of three students. Jefferson Graded School, located on Pinckney Street, replaced the original school in 1923 and was supported by the Rosenwald Fund.

The Rosenwald Fund was created under Julius Rosenwald (1862 – 1932) who founded Rosenwald and Weil Clothiers – a supplier of men’s clothing for Sears, Roebuck & Company. After an inspiring meeting with Booker T. Washington in 1911, he joined the board of trustees for the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute. His philanthropy efforts with Washington began funding grants for rural African American schools. In 1917, the Julius Rosenwald Fund was officially created to continue building schools. yc

The Rosenwald Fund set up the foundation for the schools to be eventually taken over by the County School Board, after meeting minimum standards for site size, building construction, sanitary guidelines and length of the school term.

After these requirements were met, the county would receive final payment from the fund.

The School Building Program’s goal was to provide black children with safe and purposeful schools where they could learn basic literacy, math skills, trades and home economics. Unfortunately, many counties in the South provided few or no public schools for black children at the time. The grants were awarded based on the number of employed teachers, and were made up of a combination of African American contributions, White contributions, and local tax revenue. Many of the Rosenwald Schools – including the Jefferson Graded School – were constructed based off the Community Plans Design, which was created by the fund. This was to insure uniformity and quality and had a set standard for lighting, ventilation, sanitation, equipment and even paint colors. In South Carolina alone, the Fund constructed 500 buildings between 1914 and 1932 – 481 schools, 8 teacher homes, and 11 shops.

Many of these buildings remained in use until desegregation, often times becoming community centers, preschools or offices.

Outdoor Holiday Gift Guide 2020

O

nce again, the weather has turned cold, the bright colors of fall are a distant memory, and all we have ahead is the most difficult task of the year: trying to find Christmas presents for everyone on your list. Being able to figure out the best gift for the outdoorsy people in your life can be a difficult and confusing challenge. Guessing clothing sizes can be impossible, buying a gift card feels like a cop out, and I have good friends that I could not tell you, if my life depended on it, every piece of gear they own, much less what they’d like to own.

Is there no hope? Must all fall short of giving a good gift? Hopefully not. Here is my 2020 Christmas Gift Guide for that Outdoorsy Person in Your Life.

Small gifts, stocking stuffers, and gifts for that cousin to whom you forget how

you’re related (sub $30) Small, high quality, wire gate carabiner ($6+) The kind of gift I love to give is something that is everyday functional but is priced just a bit above what the average person is willing to pay. Case in point, I know plenty of people who keep their keyrings or water bottles on cheap dime store carabiners.

Spend a few bucks and buy them a nice climbing grade carabiner: it will most likely never die from just hauling around keys, and if the need ever arises where they need something capable of suspending them off a cliff face it’ll be up to the task.

Gaia GPS ($17), All Trails Pro ($30), OnX Subscription ($30) My next three gift ideas are all based around subscriptions to powerful software to use on your smart phone; while Google Maps can use the GPS chip in your phone

to navigate roadways with ease, it doesn’t do too good for helping you plan backcountry adventures. Gaia GPS allows you to download maps offline, meaning your phone can tell you exactly where you are even when there’s no cell service; it’s the most generic of these apps listed, and for most people could replace the GPS unit they take into the woods entirely. All Trails Pro functions much the same way as Gaia GPS, but with a focus on extensive trail data that doesn’t show up anywhere else. I recently used All Trails to find a fun 6-mile hike off the Blue Ridge Parkway that didn’t show up on any of my National Geographic Trails Illustrated Topo maps. When going into an area for the first time, it does a great job of letting you know what your options are for hiking. And, if the person on your shopping list goes hiking wearing a lot of orange and carrying a rifle or bow,

Do you like to snuggle? Do you like sheep? Are you a fan of bright colors, Star Wars, Native American weaving patterns, or our national parks? Potatoes: Yes, they are healthy

I

nformation regarding potatoes may have created some confusion about what is healthy and what is not.

Low-carbohydrate diets, glycemic index, starchy, sweet potatoes are words sometimes associated with potatoes. This article will clarify common misconceptions about potatoes and teach participants how to include potatoes in a healthy diet.

Potato is a starchy vegetable and is one of the leading staple food crops of the world. Botanically, potato is a vegetable tuber and included in the USDA’s vegetable food group. It is often dubbed a starch and in the “starchy” food group, which is actually not a food group, but a subcategory including foods that are high in carbohydrate.

This “starch group” has been used as a part of the diabetic exchange system to assist individuals with diabetes in planning their diet and choosing foods that help

control their blood glucose.

Diabetics also use it to aid weight management and guide heart-healthy eating.

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) organizes the vegetables within the ‘vegetable food group’ into 5 subgroups. Based on nutrient content, potatoes are in the “starchy vegetables” subgroup. A 5.3 ounce, medium-size potato with skin counts as 1 cup of starchy vegetables.

The Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend that half of your plate consists of vegetables (and fruits). Each vegetable (and fruit) has a different vitamin, mineral and phytochemical make-up; this is why the DGAs recommends consuming a variety of fruits and vegetables.

The potato is a vegetable and can be counted in the recommended servings of vegetables per day. They are often referred to as white potatoes, as the flesh

is light-colored as compared to sweet potatoes, in which the flesh is orange.

Though both vegetables are called potatoes, they actually come from different botanical families. There are over 100 varieties of potatoes.

The (white) potato, scientifically known as Solanum tuberosum L., is a member of the nightshade family (Solanaceae), which also includes tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), eggplant (S. melongena), chili pepper (Capsicum annuum) and petunias (Petunia species). The sweet potato, scientifically known as /pomoea batatas, belongs to the Convolvulaceae plant family which includes the morning glory.

Potatoes are a nutrient-dense food. A medium size (~5.3 ounce), potato with skin contains ~110 calories, provides more potassium (620 grams) than a banana, half the daily value of vitamin C (45%), and contains no fat, sodium or cholesterol.

• Potassium – The 2010 U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommends Americans increase their intake of potassium. The Adequate Intake (Al) is 4,700 milligrams/ day and it is estimated that as high as 98% of Americans do not consume enough (or nearly that amount).

Research suggests a diet high in sodium and low in potassium may be one factor (of many) leading to high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease.

• Vitamin C – Vitamin C has many important functions; it acts as an anti-oxidant, stabilizing free radicals, helps in wound healing, keeps gums healthy and supports the body’s immune system.

• Fiber – A medium-size potato contains 2 grams of fiber - contributing 8% of the daily value per serving. Fiber is important for digestive health and may help lower blood cholesterol.

• Other nutrients – A medium-size potato includes vitamin 86 (10%), which plays a role in metabolizing protein and carbohydrate, and iron (6%)- a major component of hemoglobin. Trace amounts of zinc, folate, magnesium, thiamine, phosphorous, and riboflavin are other nutrients found in potatoes.

To control calories and fat, consider your toppings. One tablespoon of sour cream has 26 calories. Butter is much higher in calories, with 102 calories per tablespoon.

Depositphotos.com Most calories in sour cream and all calories in butter come from fat. If you add a tablespoon of butter and a tablespoon of sour cream to your potato, it will contain~ 238 calories. The more butter and sour cream you add, the higher your meal in calories and artery-clogging saturated fat.

Margarine also has about 100 calories per tablespoon.

Suggested baked potato toppings:

• Fresh veggies, raw or lightly steamed: broccoli, onions, garlic, cauliflower, carrots, baby spinach, diced tomatoes and cucumber or, -colored lettuce.

• Beans: black, great northern, chickpeas, pintos, red beans, etc.

• Non-fat or low-fat yogurt, cottage cheese, sour cream, or hard cheese.

• Herbs and spices: fresh or dried: dill, cumin, poultry seasoning, Italian seasoning, oregano, basil, parsley, paprika, onion powder, garlic powder, black, red or white pepper.

• Others: olive oil (a teaspoon), salsa

Summary:

The potato is a low-cost, nutrient-dense vegetable that can be included in a healthy diet, even for individuals who want to lose weight. Healthy eating is not about eliminating a certain food or food groups. Rather, it is a diet high in nutrient-dense foods, keeping portion size in check, and keeping potato toppings ‘light and lean’! * Please follow the advice of your doctor if you have been prescribed to follow a special - or therapeutic diet. yc

We know how hard it is to send your baby into their appointment alone, particularly if they are not feeling well. We long to give you a tour, shake your hand, give you a hug when your pet is sick, and put your mind at ease. One day we will be able to do those things again. Until that time, we will comfort your pet when they are not feeling well and promise to shower them with love and affection. 3. If you need to run errands during your pet’s appointment, please let your veterinary team know. This may allow time to attend to sick patients and emergencies that are being worked in throughout the day.

If the primary caregiver will not be bringing the pet to the appointment, please consider sending information that describes your pet’s lifestyle, diet, current medications, and any concerns you may have. It is very helpful for new patients to bring a hard copy of their pet’s medical history. Your veterinarian may have online forms that you can complete prior to your pet’s appointment. If you have questions for the doctor and cannot accompany your pet to the appointment, please have your cell phone handy and let your veterinary team know.

5. Make sure cats and exotic species are secured in a crate or carrier. Dogs can be on a leash or in a carrier. Your veterinary team may wish to place their leash on your pet. This is used for your pet’s safety.

6. If you are not feeling well, have tested positive for COVID-19, or if you are concerned you may have been exposed to the virus, please send your pet with a friend or family member who is healthy and not exposed. Let your veterinary team know if you are unable to bring your pet to an appointment because of personal illness. Wear your mask when speaking to the veterinary team member that comes to your car, even if you are feeling fine. We will be wearing ours to keep you safe!

7. Whenever possible, communicate non-urgent medical questions or appointment requests by email or voicemail. This will help to keep phone lines free for incoming appointment and emergency calls.

8. Be patient with your veterinary team!

They are trying their very best to navigate through this time. Wait times may be slightly longer than normal due to the modified work-flow. If you feel that the wait is excessive, follow your

OVID-19 has changed so many things about our daily lives. Adjusting to the “new normal” means more time spent working from home, parents juggling careers and homeschooling kids, and less time for entertainment and extracurricular activities. With all these changes, is it any wonder that your pet’s veterinary appointment may look a little different, too? Upon hearing the news of the first U.S. outbreak in March, our practice introduced Curbside Concierge Services, as a way to continue to provide exceptional care for our patients without exposing our team or pet parents to the virus. Many veterinarians adopted similar protocols in the months that followed.

Now, as businesses and schools start to reopen, many pet parents are wondering, “Why can’t I go in with my pet for their appointment?”

Curbside visits can be frustrating for both pet parents and veterinary teams.

The increased call volume may result in busy signals or dropped calls. Veterinary team members are performing all their “normal” duties in addition to increased sanitation. They make multiple trips, in all types of weather, to and from vehicles to escort pets into their appointments.

Customer service representatives have to be particularly careful to make sure pets are checked in and out efficiently, all while communicating with the medical team and securely collecting payment. Doctors are using tools like pictures, videos, and telemedicine to communicate exam findings to pet parents. Conversations concerning a pet’s serious illness or quality of life are particularly challenging.

In addition to the challenges presented by technology and lack of face-to-face interaction, it may be difficult to get an ap-

pointment with your regular veterinarian or even, in some cases, at an emergency facility. There are many reasons for this.

Some veterinary facilities have experienced staffing shortages related to COVID-19, as working parents are required to stay home to educate their children or care for a sick family member. Potential viral exposure may result in quarantine periods for personnel, making appointment availability more limited. With more people working from home, many families are finding time to catch up on routine preventative care or are adding new furry family members to their home. Many pets are spending more time outdoors where they may have increased risk of illness or injury. All these things are resulting in more veterinary visits, higher call volumes, and more strain on veterinary teams.

In spite of all these challenges, many veterinary facilities are choosing to continue curbside services for the time being. Wonder why? Your veterinarian has a unique insight to infectious diseases. Think about it; who is called first when there is an outbreak of parvovirus in an animal shelter, a wave of kennel cough that runs through a boarding facility or feline leukemia virus spreading through a cattery? Your veterinarian, of course! Veterinarians have been dealing with infectious diseases long before anyone ever heard of COVID-19. Most veterinary facilities have an entire room dedicated to isolating potential contagious animals as well as strict protocols if a patient is suspected of having an infectious disease. Donning full PPE is nothing new for your veterinary team. While we miss catching up with old friends and meeting new pet parents, many veterinarians are continuing curbside services based on our knowledge of infectious disease prevention and our desire to keep our team and pet parents safe and healthy.

Here are some tips to help your COVID-19 veterinary visit go smoothly: 1. Find out if your veterinarian is performing curbside services before your visit. If curbside services are provided, be sure your cell phone is fully charged and use a credit card if possible. Avoid scheduling other phone calls during the visit so that the line will be free when the veterinarian calls.

ou know your local parks and recreation department for things like parks, recreation centers, athletics programs, summer camps, senior activities and more. Have you checked out the offerings recently in the area of art? If not, you may have missed some things. Yes, we continue to offer various art classes and craft workshops, but do you know about these wonderful facilities?

Merry Mosaic Studio

The Merry Mosaic Studio, an initiative of Rock Hill Parks, Recreation and Tourism (PRT), opened at Boyd Hill Recreation Center (1165 Constitution Blvd.) about a year and a half ago. It’s a dedicated space where artists of all abilities in PRT therapeutic art programs can create, sell and share their artwork year-round.

Many of the artists have intellectual disabilities and have enjoyed taking classes to learn how to design and create handmade items such as photo and painted tiles, photography, hand built and wheel pottery, watercolor paintings and other items.

Not only is the studio designed for the artists to work, the surrounding walls have shelves full of their artwork on display and for purchase by the public during Boyd Hill Center’s office hours, Mon. – Fri., 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. Evening and Saturday hours are available by request.

(Currently, face masks are required in all City of Rock Hill buildings.)

As a special treat, PRT is preparing for the annual TAP into the Arts Showcase to be held Nov. 19, 2020, 6:30 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Rock Hill Sports and Event Center, 326 Technology Center Way (TAP is Therapeutic Arts Programs). The event showcases the Studio’s artwork in a beautiful gallery type experience and is highlighted by a performance from the TAP Dance Troupe. Items are for sale and make wonderful holiday gifts! Did you know that Clover Parks and Recreation has an art gallery as one of their many offerings to the community? Gallery 120 at 120 Bethel St. was established in January 2015 as a community art gallery with a mission to build a strong vibrant Arts community and encourage growth and exposure of professional and emerging artists. The mission also encompasses educating the community in the Fine Arts.

I want to give a special shout-out to Gallery 120’s volunteer curator, Mari Matamaros, who was recently recognized with S.C. Recreation and Parks Association’s (SCRPA) Community Champion Award.

Mari has been curator of Gallery 120 since January 2018 and has worked with over 35 artists to promote their talent and artwork, coordinate gallery exhibits and host artist receptions. The award recognized Mari as someone “who is passionate in supporting an initiative and bringing it to reality in efforts to improve the quality of life within the community as a whole.” Congratulations, Mari!

ll York County Library locations are now open for limited in-person services and curbside pick-up. Branch operating hours will be the same as curbside hours: • Rock Hill & Fort Mill: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Monday - Friday; 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Saturday • Clover, Lake Wylie, and York: 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday - Friday Library services inside the branch are limited. The following in-person services are currently available: browsing and borrowing materials, computer use limited to 30-minute sessions (children’s computers will not be available at this time), check out and general assistance at service desks, curbside pick-up of holds and mobile printing, and “Take and Make” kits (varies by location).

York County Library is monitoring the coronavirus (COVID-19) with local, state, and national health officials. As this is a developing situation, all information is subject to change. Continue to check our website and Facebook page for updates.

The safety of staff and patrons remains our top priority during this time. For patrons planning a library visit, here are some important reminders: • Please do not enter the library if you are feeling sick or have a temperature over 100.4°F. • Due to city of Rock Hill and city of York mask ordinances, everyone is required to wear a mask inside our Rock Hill and York locations. For our other branches, masks are strongly encouraged while in the library. We will have disposable masks available if you need one.

• Patrons and staff must maintain six feet

of distance from other people, when possible.

• YCL facilities are adhering to occupancy limits, so you may experience a wait before entering a branch.

• We encourage patrons to keep their browsing visits to 30 minutes.

• Public programs and meeting room bookings remain suspended. However, virtual programs will continue on the YCL Facebook page and YouTube channel.

• Please deposit all returned items in the outside book returns at all branches. All items returned are being quarantined for 96 hours before they are processed, checked back in, and recirculated.

• Staff are not handling cash at this time.

Bring Storytime Home: Dial-a-Story Do you want to hear a story from YCL staff at any time? Call the Library’s Dial-A-Story phone line at 803-620-8585.

You will hear a variety of stories for adults, teens, and children, as well as music and songs, poetry, jokes and riddles, history tidbits, trivia, and more. Reading gets totally cool This winter, York County Library is participating with Zoobean and sponsor Simon & Schuster’s “Books Like Us” program in Beanstack’s 4th Annual Winter Reading Challenge. The Totally Cool Winter Reading Challenge will run Dec. 14, 2020 – Jan. 31, 2021 and all ages are welcome to participate. Winter is a great time to improve family literacy, increase library usage, and snuggle up with a good book. Early registration begins, Monday, Nov. 30, 2020.

If you have registered with Beanstack during one of our previous reading challenges, you do not need to register again. Simply sign in to your account to begin the new challenge. Read or listen to anything you want for 5 hours or more, then log your time. We challenge York County to read 1 million minutes! Save-the-date for our virtual kick-off event: Snow Queen Storytime (virtual performance): Monday, Dec. 14, 5:00 – 6:30 p.m., Kick-off the Winter Reading Challenge with a “Frozen” online storytime featuring our favorite “Snow Queen.” Be sure to leave a comment or question for an interactive experience. rom housing and food to health care and transportation seniors can take advantage of benefits that are available to them. Some benefits are federal programs, others are state programs, others are federally funded but administered by the states, others are regionally or locally sponsored programs. Either way, the goal of these programs is the same — to make sure that seniors who are struggling financially do not go without the products and services they need to get by.

The Catawba Area Agency on Aging (Catawba AAA) plans, coordinates, and provides the following local aging services in its multi-county service area including Chester, Lancaster, Union, and York counties. Our primary goal is to promote and develop a comprehensive, coordinated • Information and Referral Services– connecting seniors with regional information/services • Medicare Insurance Counseling Services (SHIP – State Health Insurance

Program) – providing impartial Medicare counseling • Ombudsman Services – advocating for residents living in assisted living and/or nursing home facilities • Assessments for In-Home Services assessing seniors for services including Home Delivered Meals (sometimes referred to as meals on wheels) and Homemaker (housekeeping) • Assessments of Congregate (Senior Center/Meal) Services are suspended due to COVID • Caregiver Respite Grant – providing caregivers a break from caregiving • Mobile Food Panty Events – Catawba AAA works with Second Harvest Food Bank, local churches, and dedicated volunteers to host monthly mobile food pantry events – To request a mobile pantry schedule, call 803-329-9670.
