Humans crave connection. It’s in our DNA. Physiologically, human brains were wired this way when it was necessary to ban together for safety against the elements and wildlife. Time-warp forward to modern day, especially with advanced technologies, we can choose how we want to connect with others.

The desire to help others is strong in many people. Look at the many inspirational stories in the news and on social platforms. Creative, problem-solving individuals see a need and want to make a difference. By highlighting their stories, their passion helps inspire others. And so on.

I saw a video compilation recently where delivery robots, basically the size of a beach cooler with wheels and an antenna, got stuck on a city curb or in snow or by some other obstacle. People walking by the trapped robot not only helped it get back on track again, most of the helpers could

ommunities are made up of individuals. Through shared interests or locales, common characteristics or history, a social interaction begins and grows. Some communities may be small, like a club for bicycle enthusiasts or book lovers. Some spring up naturally, like making new friends met on a disc golf course. Many longtime friendships have started from a shared hobby, like amateur astronomy or hiking.

Since COVID quarantines last year, many social groups have moved online, similar to businesses and schools, to maintain connections. Though it may be a newer platform for some, we’re still connected with video, facetime, and phones. Sometimes, it’s multiple gadgets all at one time. I noticed the other day, I had two phones and two laptops going at once. Talk about multitasking.

be heard saying something like “There you go, little guy” and “Need some help?” as they freed it and waved it farewell. That’s generosity of spirit in action.

We’ve all dreamt of doing the things we missed during COVID quarantines. Mine are simple. I want to have some fun with friends and family. I want to listen to live music outdoors with a beer or glass of wine. I want to eat in a restaurant. And I want to hike with friends. These activities help nourish me, especially anything outdoors. And when I’m nourished, I can, in turn, help others.

Community is what we make it. We can individually strengthen ourselves, and when we pull together, we can achieve even larger goals and help overcome tragedy.

We recently lost Dr. Robert Lesslie; his wife, Barbara; two of their grandchildren, Adah and Noah; along with Robert Shook and James Lewis of North Carolina, who

were working at the Lesslie residence.

Dr. Lesslie wrote YC Magazine’s Health column since the very first issue, back in January 2004. His columns were one of many ways that he helped this community. He shared his knowledge and gave advice based on facts, all with wit and charm. He gave comfort and helped find solutions to problems. Dr. Lesslie touched many people throughout his life, and he touched even more through his columns on these pages.

Our hearts are heavy. For all those grieving, I hope that the thoughts, prayers and love of many in York County shall help give you strength. Just know that you are not alone. Dr. Lesslie showed us how to help others by his many deeds. And now it’s our turn. Let us be inspired to help others and, in so doing, see what heights our York County community can soar. yc

History of the Catawba River, Part 1: Pre-Industrial

P

resent-day York County is located between the Broad and Catawba rivers in the foothills of the South Carolina Piedmont.1 One of the most noticeable features of the Piedmont is its broad, flowing rivers. One such river, the Catawba, is estimated to be anywhere from 10,000 to 20,000 years old.2 People who had been nomadic for centuries prior began to settle along the rivers of the Carolina Piedmont at that time.

One such tribe, the Catawba, settled on the banks of the river that today bears their name. Interestingly enough, the origin of the word “Catawba” is unknown. The Catawba people referred to themselves as yeh is-WAH h’reh, which roughly translates as “people of the river.” Historians theorize that the name “Catawba” was given to them by Europeans who simply mispronounced their name. Regardless of the true origin of the term, it is clear that Europeans were using the word Catawba to describe all tribes living in the Catawba River Valley as early as 1700.3 The Catawba Nation made first contact with European explorers in 1540 when Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto traveled through the Carolinas seeking gold. In 1566, another Spanish conquistador, Juan Pardo, followed in de Soto’s footsteps. They built forts and settled on Catawba land until they were finally expelled by the Catawba Nation in the early 1570s.4 Following Pardo’s expulsion, The Catawba Native Americans lived relatively unmolested for about a century until the establishment of the English settlement of Charles Town in 1670. English settlers from Charles Town used South Carolina’s navigable waterways to travel more than 250 miles inland to initiate trade with the Catawba Nation.

Despite European exploration, the Catawba River basin was generally unknown to most Europeans prior to 1700. Most Europeans were introduced to this region of the Carolina Piedmont by English explorer and naturalist, John Lawson.

Between December 28, 1700 and February 24, 1701, Lawson traveled nearly 550 miles on a three-month expedition through the Piedmont region of both North and South Carolina. Lawson published a journal of his experiences in 1709 and, in doing so, provided some of the first scientific descriptions of the flora and fauna of the Carolinas.5 PAGE 6

European settlement of the Carolina Backcountry began in earnest in the mid1700s. Initially, the majority of immigrants to present-day York County were of Scottish descent. Some emigrated directly from the Lowlands of Scotland, though the majority immigrated to Northern Ireland prior to their immigration to the American colonies. This region of Northern Ireland was known as the Ulster Plantation. The Ulster-Scots that lived there were predominantly Presbyterian and, in an attempt to differentiate themselves from the Catholic Irish, referred to themselves as ScotsIrish.6 Early immigrants typically arrived at port in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and then traveled south along a series of Native American trails that had been widened by Europeans for use as wagon roads. The most prominent of these thoroughfares became known as the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road.

The European settlers’ relationship with the river differed in many ways from that of the Catawba Nation. This difference was mainly due to a fundamental difference in ideology. Native Americans had no concept of private ownership of land while many European settlers held fast to the belief that the land was theirs to “subdue.” European settlers quickly harnessed the power of the Catawba River which they used to literally turn the wheels of industry. They established grist mills, an ironworks, and even a gold mine along the river.7 However, as industry grew it became clear that largescale transportation of heavy goods by boat was not possible due to the river’s shallow water and rocky banks. In 1786, The Santee Canal Company was chartered with the express purpose of improving navigation of South Carolina’s waterways. Demand for canal traffic grew even greater with the invention of the cotton gin in 1794. By 1826, there was a canal at each one of the four principal falls of the Catawba River.8 Though the construction of canals made travel down the river much easier, traveling across the river was a different story entirely. Prior to 1852, there were no bridges crossing the Catawba River. The only way to cross was either by ford or ferry. A ford is shallow place where people, animals, and wagons can wade across the river. One of the most prominent fords was the “Old Nations Ford.” Long before European settlers arrived in the Carolina Backcountry, the Catawba Native Americans

used this ford to cross the river. A ferry is a place where people, horses and supplies are transported across the river on a flat boat or barge. All known ferries on the Catawba River prior to the American Revolution were rope ferries. A pole with a pulley was installed somewhere upriver from the ferry boat.9 Following the developments of the first half of the 19th century, the region was impacted significantly by Industrialization. Cycles in nature al such cycles, we will explore three in this series: The hydrologic (water) cycle, the carbon cycle, and the nitrogen cycle.

Water is essentially synonymous with life. Without water, there is no life…period.

Specifically, the water has to be in liquid form. Just look at our neighboring planets in the Solar System. Venus is closer to the sun and much hotter than earth. No liquid water can be present on Venus because the intense heat keeps it in gaseous form (water vapor) in the atmosphere. Mars has ice caps at its poles, but frozen water cannot be utilized for life processes. Here on earth, the temperature is in that sweet spot that allows water to exist in liquid form, and it cycles through earth’s systems to sustain living organisms.

Carbon is a very common, highly versatile element with incredible capacity to bond with other elements. The entire field of organic chemistry deals exclusively with carbon compounds (although not

That’s the saying, anyway, and in the case of the natural world, it is true. In my studies of ecology (the interrelationships of living things and their environment) I have learned about many of the cycles in nature. All of them demonstrate a fundamental concept of the universe: The Law of Conservation of Matter. If a hypothesis is a tentative explanation and a theory is a general set of principles supported by evidence, then a law is a concise statement that always proves to be true.

The Law of Conservation of Matter states that matter is neither created nor destroyed in any reaction. Matter can be combined and even transformed, but the amount of matter in the universe remains the same. This has interesting implications for when we “throw something away.”

There is no “away” to throw anything. At best, we can move it to another place. In time, it may decompose, or otherwise break down. Even if we burn it, some of the mass remains as ashes, while the rest floats into the atmosphere in small particles of smoke. This is one of the reasons that we advocate recycling. At least by actively recycling our “trash,” we can partially control where it goes and how it is re-used, resulting in more sustainable practices.

Nature has actually been recycling since the beginning of time. Over the next few months of this column, we will have a detailed discussion of some of the ways recycling occurs in the natural world. For now, let’s take a brief look at the food chains and nutrient cycles.

You may be familiar with the terms “producer” and “consumer” with regard to food chains. Plants, of course, fill the role of producers because they can utilize the sun’s energy to conduct photosynthesis, fixing carbohydrates into their tissues to use as a food source. All other organisms are consumers because they cannot make their own food as plants do; they must “consume” the plants or other consumers.

This is the basis of the “food chain.” Some consumers are predators. Others are scavengers or decomposers that recycle dead organisms and return nutrients to the soil to be taken up by the plants, thus completing the cycle.

There are also important elements and nutrients that are cycled through earth’s systems. The scientific term for the movement of these elements is “biogeochemical cycles.” That’s quite a mouthful, but you can see from the word that it involves a combination of biological, geological, and chemical processes. While there are sever-

Nitrogen is also important to life. It is crucial to the structure of all proteins and plant chlorophyll. So, I will say it again… without nitrogen, there is no life. Over the next few months, we will explore these all-important elements and molecules: water, carbon, and nitrogen and the ways they move into and out of living systems.

In Memoriam: Dr. Robert Lesslie

C Magazine joins the community in mourning the loss of Dr. Robert Lesslie, who, among so many other roles, served as YC’s health columnist for many years. Starting with the very first issue, he faithfully kept our readers informed about all things health-related. Whether addressing concerns about our children, debunking medical myths or correcting misinformation, Dr. Lesslie wrote with the authority of his expertise, yet never talked down to anyone. His style was light, conversational; he answered questions and

calmed fears with common sense and a dose of good humor.

The tragic, senseless deaths of Dr. Lesslie, his wife, Barbara and two of their grandchildren, as well as two contractors working at his home has shocked and shaken the York County community. And, yet, as horrific as this ordeal has been, the last thing Dr. Lesslie would want is for anyone to be angry, bitter, or morose. A deeply caring, empathetic, generous person of powerful faith, he of all people knew grief is healthy, but would want people to

celebrate his life, benefit from his contributions, and, perhaps most important, rejoice in his entering the presence of his lord and savior.

As he put it so eloquently in his January 2021 column, “One day, when I depart this body and find myself in the presence of the Lord, my time, however it will be measured, will be filled with the praises and the wonder of Jesus. I know that I will once again be able to hug my mother and walk and talk with my father.

There are a lot of people I want to see as well—family and friends, grandparents, some of whom I never met on this side.

And I will seek out Peter and John and the Apostle Paul, as well as other giants of the faith — men and women whose words and deeds have guided and molded my journey and my heart.

We have no idea what Heaven will look like, only that it will be perfect. And because of that I know that one day, when I’ve experienced the presence and joy of that surrounding host of saints, I will find myself walking with Barbara in a field of lush, green grass, surrounded by gently rising conifer-cloaked hills. The words of Jesus will echo through that glade — Behold, I make all things new. And there will come Dox, charging towards us, his ears flapping in the breeze, his golden hair and majestic tail waving in the wind, and both of his laughing, dancing eyes meeting ours.”

Praise God from whom all blessings flow.

Praise him all creatures here below.

Praise Him above ye heavenly hosts.

Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.

We can think of no better way to remember and celebrate this extraordinary man than by handing him the microphone, that is, to re-run some of the many words of wisdom he has given us over the years.

Dr. Lesslie may be no longer with us, but his advice, his love, his shining spirit live on.

Dr. Lesslie, I have a cousin who’s recently been diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. There doesn’t seem to be much he can do about this. Do you have any suggestions? I don’t want to go down that path.

None of us want to go down that path, and, yes, I have a few suggestions. First, I need to, once again, beat the old drum of “lifestyle choices.” If you’ve read my columns in the past, you know it’s all about being physically active, smoking cessation, controlling your weight, blood pressure and blood sugar, moderate alcohol consumption (if at all), proper diet, and adequate sleep. Having addressed that, there is, in fact, some good news to share regarding the prevention of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and possibly forestalling or preventing the full-blown development of dementia. I came across

York County’s Entertainingly Informative Magazine a review article that examined the use of a once-daily drink that over a trial period of three years demonstrated significant reductions in cognitive decline when started early during the onset of MCI. It’s something called Fortasyn Connect (Souvenaid). While not currently available in the U.S. its components are readily obtainable. They include B complex vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, choline, uridine, and selenium. My take on this? In reasonable amounts, these supplements are safe and inexpensive. And if there’s a chance that MCI can be improved or prevented, this is something we should consider.

We noticed this knot a couple of days ago on our boy’s chest. What do you think it is?

You might be surprised how often this concern brings a parent and child to the office, or even the ER. A parent discovers something unusual on their child and immediately starts to worry. That’s understandable. There’s a long list of things that should cause some concern. Fortunately, while that list is long, the things on it don’t occur very often. But here are some things to be concerned about if you find a new “growth” or knot on your child.

• The presence of fever. This might indicate infection or significant inflammation.

• Trauma. Minor contusions and falls might cause a subtle fracture, especially in young children and infants.

• Tenderness localized over a “long bone” - the arms or legs. While rare, this might be how a bone cancer initially presents.

• Swelling, redness, tenderness anywhere. This could be the start of an abscess.

• Swollen and tender “knots” under the neck, in the armpits, or in the groin.

Some kind of lymph node pathology might be getting started.

• Any prolonged illness (weeks or months), with fatigue and weight loss.

We have to start looking.

• Unusual skin rashes. This could be infection, but also something coming from the bone marrow.

I don’t understand my child and we’re always knockin’ heads! Is there anything I can do?

Simpatico. “Of similar mind or temperament.” That’s a worthy goal, to be of a similar mind with your child—to understand where they’re coming from and what makes them tick. For some of us, it seems to come easy. But for most, it requires intentional effort. Fortunately, there are people who have thought through this and offer help based on logic and outcomes.

One such person is Gary Chapman, author of The 5 Love Languages. It begins with taking a hard look at yourself and seeing

what makes you tick. Once you’ve done that, you can focus on your child, and build a long-lasting bridge of understanding and communication.

Chapman tells us there are five types of “love languages”—ways in which we give and receive love. Each of us is unique, and while we have a “primary” love language, we might be blends of one or two. These become manifest at an early age and remain with us throughout our lives. The key is to understand these languages, identify which most closely applies to us, and then work to see which most closely applies to our child. Here they are:

Words of Affirmation

Right off the bat, we probably think of “compliments” here. And that would be correct. But there’s much more to affirmation. Encouragement is an important part of this. And as Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians, “Love is kind.” In showing love, our words should be kind, gentle, and humble. How does your child respond to your words?

Quality Time

This one is tough. “Quality” means giving someone your undivided attention.

Sitting in a movie theater doesn’t get it, nor does talking with your teenager while both of you are texting away on your smart phones. Focused attention. Quality conversation, when the two of you are sharing feelings, thoughts, experiences, hopes, and dreams. When was the last time you and your “problem child” went somewhere and spent time one-on-one? What happened?

morning, realize this may not be an act of rebellion or disrespect. It just may not be their love language. Yet, that bed needs to be made.

Physical Touch

Obvious, isn’t it? Most of us like and want to be touched. For many, this is our primary love language, and small pats or hugs convey our love. Study your child’s body language and response to your touch.

If this is their love language, you’ll know.

And if that’s the case, understand that excessive physical punishment can have long-term and disastrous consequences. If she is upset and crying, the most important thing she needs is your presence and a hug.

That’s it — an abbreviated course in the five love languages. If the language of both

you and your child is the same—quality time, as an example—you’re probably not “knockin’ heads.” But if you don’t know your own language or that of your child, it may seem that you’re ships passing in the night.

It doesn’t have to be that way. If this idea of unique love languages strikes a chord, we recommend you get a copy of Chapman’s book and study it. What you learn about your child — and yourself — might be a surprise.

Receiving Gifts

Gifts can be visual symbols of love, and they don’t have to be expensive. They just need to come from the heart. Remember, we’re advocates of the adage “Don’t give a child something they cry for.” This has nothing to do with that. It has everything to do with understanding that your child responds to symbols of your love, whether something small but meaningful—maybe something they collect—or something completely unexpected. It doesn’t have to happen every day or every week, but if your child’s love language is giving and receiving gifts, you have a lot of options and opportunities. When they give you a gift, no matter the size or cost, stop what you’re doing, think about it, and accept it as a demonstration of their love.

Acts of Service

With children, this love language is most commonly expressed by the delegation and fulfillment of household chores. This “delegation” comes most effectively through requests and not orders. Remember that love is a choice, and not a command. If your child’s love language is acts of service, they will express this through serving you by completing their daily chores, showing you their love. You can do the same, by serving them—helping with their chores or through small acts around the house.

Tuning In To York County

Remembering Dr. Robert Lesslie

I

was a patient a number of times at Riverview Urgent Care. Usually, when I went there I was in need of immediate medical attention, feeling anxious and imagining the worst. I was always relieved to see Dr. Robert Lesslie as my attending physician. His medical diagnosis was always dispensed quickly, expertly, and with a huge dose of humor. He always made me laugh and he always made me feel that I was going to be OK. Help was there and if I heeded his advice, within a few days I would be feeling better. I could go home with a bottle of pills in my hand and a chuckle in my heart and I was going to be fine.

There is no bottle of pills that could ever make what happened OK, but in the spirit of Dr. Lesslie, maybe a little chuckle would help.

I read that Dr. Lesslie played the bagpipes. Bagpipes are a bit of an acquired taste. This has nothing to do with the player and everything to do with the nature of the bagpipes themselves. Bagpipes are loud. Bagpipes are nasal, producing a tone much like nails on a chalkboard. And then there are the drone pipes, several pipes dedicated to doing nothing but playing the same note continuously. So, nails on a chalkboard and loudly and incessantly playing the same note. Probably not a recipe to win friends and influence people.

outside and resound off hill and dale for great distances. If you’re standing on a mountaintop and someone is playing bagpipes a few mountaintops over, bagpipes are extremely cool, and they’re about the right volume. Bagpipes were not meant to be played indoors. If you’re in the same room with a set of bagpipes … nah.

I remember a couple of occasions where someone decided to play the bagpipes at an open mic night in a small room. The combination of the nasal tone quality and the sheer volume of the instrument could have folks running for the exits in a minute or two and have the place cleared out in about five minutes. Many places simply did not allow bagpipes at open mic nights.

Bagpipes in a small room were instant business killers.

There is a joke among musicians that the definition of a gentleman is someone who can play the bagpipes, but doesn’t. Whenever I visited Riverview Urgent Care over the years, Dr. Lesslie healed my pains, tickled my funny bone, and brightened my spirit, but not once did he play the bagpipes for me.

So, thank you, Dr. Lesslie, for being a gentleman.

Working Within

Why?

B

y the time this article hits the stand, many of us are asking “Why?” as we grieve for the loved ones (Dr. Robert Lesslie, his wife Barbara and grandchildren, Adah and Noah, and Mr. Phillip Adams) in our community of Rock Hill (including our Gastonia, NC neighbors, GSM Services - Mr. James Lewis and Mr. Robert Shook). Like many of you, I have been taken aback of the tragedy and what appears to be the senselessness of their deaths. The “what ifs” continue, and I had to dig deep in my discipline of psychology, beliefs, spiritual, and etc. to make sense of “Why?” To be honest, the events could have been us, you and/or me. Unfortunately, the randomness of trauma and tragedies are everyday occurrences.

The nature of the traumatic events often forces us to self-examine many aspects of our lives, including mortality, legacies, priorities, values/beliefs, relationships, culture/society, etc. In addition, maybe we’re searching for answers to the “Whys?”

What if the answer has a lot to do with the feeling of “out-of-control,” the inability to trust (CPR-D, Consistent, Predictable, Reliable, - Dependable patterns of things in our lives) our environment, relationships, etc. Often, we like to “control” our environment, relationships, etc. Thus, when tragedy or trauma or unforeseen things occur, our thoughts “shocks” us. It shakes us to the core, due to the realization that we have very little control of what is outside of us (and often inside, too).

Thus, we may need to focus more on the “How?” vs the “Why’s” or “What’s” – the response or the opportunity to choose. The choice to choose provides an opportunity to set your mind “free.” The whys and the whats will lead you to a path of depression, anxiety (including obsession of thoughts), and other mental health challenges of being “stuck.” While we continue to mourn the loss of valued members of our community, the choice to choose is how do we want to make the lives lost live in us – eternal, legacies, and etc.?

Many of us have been touched by the Lesslies, the Adams, the Lewises, and the Shooks. Thus, “how” do we continue to choose to live will determine on the impact in our community and in our lives.

We “can” (vs we can’t) choose to support, care, love, help, and so many other choices to bring their lives in a positive eternal im-

pact in our community. What I find interesting is we often look on the “outside” vs the inside to “fix” or to change. The answer is within us.

As I have noted in previous articles, “It only takes a spark To get a fire going And soon all those around Can warm up in its glowing.” The “why” can be converted/ translated to “how.” Whether we choose the negatives (i.e., hate, resentment, negative/destructive anger, bitterness, etc.) or the positives (i.e., love, care, patience, kindness, gentleness, etc.), that is the choice we have as a community and as individuals. The “choice” is what sets you free from the “whys.”

Therefore, the following are the “how’s” in coping/managing with the “whys”: • Manage expectations. Unmet expectations often and will take you “down the rabbit hole” of anxiety/depression and other negative thoughts/behaviors.

Adapting is the key, learning to adjust to major change such as the events that occurred does not happen overnight.

The grieving/loss will take time for us as a community (it rarely occurs without stress). Recognizing the emotional/ psychological pain/hurt takes time and patience, not only will it help you survive but also thrive through this time of trauma and uncontrollable events.

• Focus on opportunities. The events that occurred is difficult because something is being taken away (i.e., loved ones, sense of control, including the security of home, and etc.). While these events may occur, choosing to think of the opportunities that could come from the trauma/tragedy can have a significant impact on the choices we can/ will choose about our community, the future, and ultimately the impact it has on you, me, and us.

• Develop realistic goals. How we can move forward (even if it means taking small steps) from the loss of our loved ones. Once a person starts to look to opportunities that can come from the trauma/tragedy, we can slowly move in a direction that will keep the “spirit” of the ones we lost live eternal in you, me and us. It is critical that these objectives/goals are achievable, observable and etc. Setting realistic, specific goals and developing a plan for their comple-

Depositphotos.com tion are factors in moving our community in a positive effective change.

• Take time for self-care. Mindfulness, being aware, gratitude of attitude are ways to continue to take care of self. If you find that you’re pulling/ distancing self, then you’re heading the ineffective direction of healing/growing. By taking care of self physically, mentally, emotionally/psychologically, spiritually, relationally, etc., you will be better equipped to deal with the emotions related to the losses/tragedies and traumas.

• Accept the “uncontrollable.”

Whenever you believe you have “control,” life will convey to you the little you have. Hence, the reason life is about “how” vs “what or why.” Healing and growing will come sooner when we’re able to accept the “choices” we have. It sets us free for options, alternatives, and ultimately, frees us from thinking/perceiving being “trapped.”

Then as a community, we can accept and start handling the “whats and whys” of emotions more effectively.

Refusing/denying or even attempting to rationalize the “whys” will keep us from moving forward.

• Keep moving. The “hows” will keep us moving. The “whys and whats” will

keep us “stuck.” While we’re continuing to grief for the loss, choosing our options will allow us to move forward in an effective (and often positive) way. Acting on adversity such as the events that occurred helps to develop strength, resilience, change, and etc. which will help us (as a community) deal with tragedies/traumas, hardships more effectively.

Find the center of who you/we are in the “storm,” then make the choice. Worts in the garden

Y

ou read the title correctly; I am speaking of worts and not warts -although writing about attracting toads to the garden might be a good subject for a future column. Many centuries ago, early herbalists and medical practitioners used signatures to determine medicinal values of plants. Many thought that the similarities in appearance of plant leaves or other plant parts to human organs were a divine sign of an intended use.

subject to mildew, but many new hybrids have very good resistance to this disease.

They usually begin flowering in the month of March. Most species have clusters of small flowers that are rose pink in bud, open light pink, and then fade to blue, giving you a kaleidoscope of color for about a month. Moderate shade with early morning sun is the ideal location to grow these.

They grow best in an organic soil, but will tolerate clay soils that have good drainage. They are quite drought tolerant once established, but grow best in moist soils.

Pulmonarias are considered short-lived perennials and may need to be divided and replanted every four to five years in the winter months. If the leaves look tired by mid-summer, a little cleaning out the

tattered leaves will bring out some fresh new foliage.

Liverwort is a small native herb that grows on the floor of deciduous forests all over the Eastern United States. There are two species found in South Carolina. Hepatica americana, Round-lobed Hepatica, is common to York county. It is often found near stream banks but grows well in garden soil.

• Liverwort, Hepatica - treating the liver • Lousewort, Pedicularis – repelling lice • Spleenwort, Asplenium - treating the spleen • Lungwort, Pulmonaria - treating pulmonary infections • Toothwort, Dentaria - treating tooth ailments I don’t know about any of the medicinal properties, but I do know that many of the worts are great additions to the shady spots in the garden and deer do not eat them. Take lungwort, the only non-native species that I will discuss today. Lungworts are woodland perennials grown for their interesting foliage and late winter flowers. Some species are evergreen, and others are deciduous. They combine well with other shade plants and ferns and there are many species with differing patterns of white splashes in the foliage. Get ready for the lawn wars!

Lungwort (Photo/Paul Thompson) This interesting little plant has threelobed leaves that can either be solid green but more often with blotches of variegation. In the winter months the leaves are maroon to bronze in color.

Early spring brings out dainty blue flowers which stand above the leaves. These herbs are great companions with mosses and weathered stone.

The last of the worts to talk about today are the spleenworts. These are ferns in the genus Asplenium. Ebony Spleenwort, A. platyneuron, is the most common species found in our area. These are quite versatile little ferns. You find them growing in moist areas, in dry-gravely soils, and even within cracks of granite outcrops. They are often found growing with mosses. These dainty ferns have fronds that grow erect from the center of the clump with smaller fronds splayed out on the ground around the base.

The axis of a frond, called a rachis, is black, hence the common name. The erect fronds are fertile and produce spores on the un-

derside of the “leaves.” These fronds end up dying back after the spores are released.

The sterile fronds lay on the ground and are evergreen.

These ferns are extremely easy to transplant when they volunteer in the garden. I usually dig them with a putty knife slipped about an inch deep under the plants. They are exceptionally hardy little ferns that take little, if any, care aside from removing the spent fronds. They work exceptionally well in combination with rocks and mosses using their natural environment as an inspiration. Another, but less common spleenwort found in York County is maidenhair spleenwort, Asplenium trichomanes. You normally find this fern in the shade of granite outcrops. Its growth habit is not so erect, and the “leaves” are much more rounded and smaller producing a delightful texture. yc Paul Thompson is a Horticulture Agent with the Clemson Extension Service. A closer look at our architecture

E

very Friday morning for the past few years, Friday Arts Project has invited artists and art enthusiasts to join their morning discussions. At the beginning of this year, they began reading and discussing The Architecture of Happiness

by Alain de Botton. The book is about the philosophy and psychology of architecture

and “the indelible connection between our identities and our locations.” In other words, how our environments move and shape us.

“The buildings we admire,” says de Botton, “are ultimately those which, in a variety of ways, extol values we think worthwhile – which refer, that is, whether

through their materials, shapes or colours, to such legendarily positive qualities as friendliness, kindness, strength and intelligence.” He goes on to assert “Our sense of beauty and our understanding of the nature of a good life are intertwined.”

This got me thinking about the buildings I walk by every day. Most days, I pass

by them without giving them a second thought. Every once in a while, though, I will slow down enough to take a long look at them. The buildings I see most often are the ones on and around Main Street in Rock Hill, so I decided to take a walk one day with the intention of trying to hear what these buildings were trying to tell me.

Many of the buildings on Main Street are some of the oldest in Rock Hill and, on first glance, look like they haven’t changed much at all through the years. The Gettys Art Center and the Freedom Temple next door (both constructed in the early 1900s), for example, boast large columns, triangular roofs and lighter colored bricks in the Classical style recalling the temples of ancient Greece and Rome. These buildings have a sense of dignity and importance. It would take quite a bit of work to make any significant changes to the exterior of these buildings and I think that’s just how those buildings like it.

Continuing down Main Street towards Dave Lyle, the buildings I pass have always been used for commercial purposes, not for government or religious purposes like the Gettys (which was originally the Courthouse and Post Office) and the Freedom Temple. The buildings use darker colored bricks and are less ornate. Most of the

buildings have large windows on the first floor in which to show the shops’ products in the hopes of enticing customers. In fact, I may or may not have stopped in at Books on Main and come out with some new books on my stroll Some of the most significant changes to Main Street, at least in the 15 years that I’ve lived here, are the addition of two apartment buildings: 139 Main and The Anderson Apartments. Both buildings were built from the ground up; 139 Main on the site of the old Woolworth building and The Anderson on a vacant lot of land across from Wells Fargo. Interestingly, both buildings used an aesthetic style similar to the buildings around them, though 139 Main sticks more closely to that style than The Anderson does probably because it is in the middle of Main Street whereas The Anderson is on the end, not as close to as many other buildings. The Anderson blends the older style architecture with a more modern

style as a way of saying, “We’re connected to Main Street but we’re still modern”.

All this talk of construction got me thinking about another part of Old Town that is undergoing a massive transformation right now: the newly christened Knowledge Park area. Many wondered what would happen to the Bleachery after the awful fire in 2009 (I can still remember seeing the smoke driving down 77 all the way at Carowinds). Development was slow at first, but it has certainly picked up the pace these past few years with the addition of the Rock Hill Sports & Event Center, the Lowenstein building and the Cambria hotel. When they started construction on that site, I was worried that they would tear down the Bleachery Water Treatment Plant with its two iconic stacks and it brought a smile to my face while on my stroll seeing that the plant and its stacks, both from the 1930s, are still standing, right in between two very buildings with

very modern aesthetics. The plant certainly stands out but I am glad to see that its still there, reminding us of Rock Hill’s past.

De Botton, in his book, also says, “The notion of buildings that speak help us to place at the very centre of our architectural conundrums the question of the values we want to live by – rather than merely of how we want things to look.” So, what are the values that the buildings in Old Town, Rock Hill seem to be speaking of? There is a tension between the past and the future in the architecture here, but they aren’t in conflict. Rock Hill wants to keep moving forward but in a way that isn’t completely forgetting about its past. Photography View Finder

T

he idiom, “There is no accounting for taste”, pretty much sums up my take on some iconic artists and photographers. For example, consider the American painter Jackson Pollock. When viewing Pollock’s paintings, I stare, I tilt my head to the right, I tilt to the left, and then I admit, “No, I don’t get it.” I could easily be dismissed as a rube for not appreciating Pollock’s work.

Pollock’s abstract paintings have always been a subject of critical debate, but there’s no denying his popularity in the art world and the monetary value of Pollock’s work.

In 2016, sixty years after his death, one of Pollock’s paintings reportedly sold for $200 million.

I also go against the grain of popularity with the iconic Swiss born photographer Robert Frank or at least photographs from his 1958 book The Americans; I quite like Frank’s early large format photography. Frank travelled across the United States creating 28,000 photos. From those 28,000 photos, Frank selected 83 images to publish a very dim photo narrative about American society. At the time, Frank’s work was not well received and only later did it come to be seen as a seminal work of photography. Today, Frank is much celebrated.

What does this rube think? Well, if I had been alive when Popular Photography magazine panned Frank’s The Americans as, “meaningless blur, grain, muddy exposures, drunken horizons and general sloppiness,” I would not have disagreed.

In 2021, as a person who practices the art and craft of photography, I still see the technical shortcomings in Frank’s work that Popular Photography was referring to 1959. Can I point out technical shortcomings and still value Frank’s work? Yes. In fact, this short essay is about overlooking technical issues in light of the greater value of an image or body of work.

Since the pandemic lockdowns, I imagine most photographers have revisited their older photo work, I have. In doing so, I’ve come to see many of my images in a new light. If my opinion of Robert Frank’s work seems harsh, you should see how harshly I judge the technical merits, or lack thereof, with regards to my own work. In reviewing my own photo collection, I’ve found images that have no hope of redemption. I’ve also found images that demonstrate that technical perfection is PAGE 16

not the end all. I’d like to share with you three example images and some thoughts.

First up is an image of a coyote. One eve-

ning I was photographing deer when this coyote and I surprised each other. I was not prepared in any way for capturing a close-

up of a small animal in motion. As he ran past, no time to change camera settings, I panned the camera with his movement. In

Another spontaneous photo by the author. reviewing this image, I was surprised that I had not already deleted the file. There is nothing in focus, there is nothing sharp and it’s underexposed. Three technical flaws for the image I had hoped to capture.

But on review, I see the fading evening light, the fixed gaze of the coyote, its two legs off of the ground in motion, and its leaning into the frame. I see a moment not likely to be repeated. I like it. It has value photographically.

The next photo to discuss is a portrait of a member of the counter-culture group, the Rainbow Family. I shot this image using a medium format film camera that you compose and focus while viewing the scene upside down and backwards. I wish the dog was looking to his right into the frame. I wish I had not cut part of this man’s feet off. I wish I had separation between the man’s head and the tent tarp behind him. So many technical flaws but look at those eyes, that stare. I see a moment not likely to be repeated. I like it. It has value photographically.

The final example was captured at the end of a photo shoot conducted by another photographer. I had not anticipated having any time behind the camera,

but when asked if I wanted to shoot, I could not refuse. Not wanting to take too much time, I grabbed a camera, and using the scant available window light, I shot a 16-frame roll of film. This is another image that lacks sharpness, has almost nothing in focus and it has subject motion blur. But look at the spontaneity of the model, the ballerina like movement, and the light, that beautiful light. This is an image I could have easily culled, but I see a moment not likely to be repeated. I like it. It has value photographically.

So, after reviewing my old images with fresh eyes, do I excuse meaningless blur, grain, muddy exposures, drunken horizons and general sloppiness? Nope, at least not in my work. The take-away, I’m a firm believer that technical expertise in photography is what we should strive for, but perfection is not always found in the parts of an image, but rather in the whole of an image. yc Mike Baker is an awarding-winning photographer whose work has been published by national and regional publications. How supportive services help with financial stability

U

nited Way of York County’s mission is to help 3,000 York County families achieve financial stability by 2030. Ever since United Way of York County established a single issue goal of tackling poverty, projects, funding, grants, and much more have focused on reaching county residents with the necessary tools and resources to achieve financial security.

Issues surrounding financial uncertainty impacts over half of the adults in the American public. In York County, 20% of working families with at least one worker live below the federal poverty level.

York County residents’ specific financial stability needs motivated United Way to work with community organizations to create opportunities that focus on a greater understanding of financial literacy.

However, access to critical financial literacy resources comes with many obstacles.

UWYC is addressing these barriers, spe-

cifically in the area of supportive services.

Supportive services are services provided to help individuals enhance their way of living and to achieve self-sufficiency within communities.

By assisting with monthly supportive services, such as childcare, adult care, and after-school care, we support families along a path to financial stability. Parents and caregivers are gifted the freedom of time to pursue employment and add to their income. Partnering with and creating supportive services in the surrounding York area expands access to information and education on financial responsibilities.

Participants then complete assessments to gauge retention and understanding of subject material. Once students conclude the lessons, they are connected with a personal financial coach to continue their financial literacy journey.

As the United Way of York County established the bold goal of financial stability, providing educational tools to residents followed suit. Financial literacy requires access to supportive services so that residents can equip themselves with the knowledge on how to work toward a financially secure lifestyle.

Considering that over half of the American public faces uncertain financial situations, bridging the gap between individuals and supportive services allows people to pursue financial stability. Supportive services are essential support pillars for the community, especially when grappling with the more challenging financial issues of the present day.

art of a real estate attorney’s job is to examine and report on title to real estate. That means he or she has to go to the courthouse and research the history of the ownership of the property to see if anything is on record which would adversely affect a buyer’s quiet use, enjoyment and ownership of the property. The attorney usually makes the report to a title insurance company. The title insurance company then issues a title policy which will protect the buyer against any adverse claims made against the owner. However, every title report, hence every title insurance policy, will list a number of title exceptions. Most title exceptions are ‘permitted’ in that though they affect a buyer’s rights as owner, the exceptions are so common and usual that they do not amount to “title defects” which diminish the value of the property to the buyer.

Some examples of permitted title exceptions for property in a residential subdivision are as follows: • The property is subject to Restrictive Covenants governing “Green Acres” subdivision.

• The property is subject to a 10 foot easement along all boundary lines for utilities and drainage.

• The property is subject to the requirement that the residence has to be constructed no nearer than 25 feet from the front property line, 10 feet from the side lines, and 15 feet from the rear line.

Some examples of impermissible exceptions or title defects, which serve to either kill the sale, or delay the sale until the defects are cleared up, are as follows: • The seller(s) acquired the property through the estate of their deceased father and his estate has not been properly probated in York County.

• The seller has a judgment against her in the amount of $19,493.00 which is a lien against the property.

• The property was recently foreclosed

and the foreclosing attorney neglected to name a second mortgage holder as a defendant in the foreclosure action.

You might say, “That all sounds rather legal” and you would be correct, but it is important. However, as important as the “legal” stuff is on a title report, it doesn’t really begin to tell the whole story of owning property. The typical title report/title policy is seriously deficient in the information it imparts to homeowners. I think that especially for young, first time home buyers in York County, a more complete and accurate title report should contain the following type of information: • The property is subject to being overrun

• The property is subject to the roar of tree frogs from early spring until first frost.

• Any Crepe Myrtles, River Birches or rose bushes on the property are subject to being defoliated by Japanese beetles in early summer.

• The property is subject to being used as a depository by neighborhood dogs.

• The property is subject to being used for setting off fireworks every Fourth of July and New Year’s Eve and your dog will not like it.

• The property is subject to being used by teenage boys for endless hours of video game playing.

• The property is subject to being used for teaching children how to catch and throw a ball, ride a bicycle, roller blade and drive a car.

• The property is subject to being used for preparing and sharing countless family meals.

• The property is subject to cries of anguish by young students struggling with homework.

• The property is subject to the anxious pacing of nerve wracked parents nursing an ill child.

• The property is subject to stolen moments of quiet romance between mom and dad at the end of crazy, frantic, harried days.

• The property is subject to the heart melting tenderness of reading stories to, saying prayers with, and tucking the little ones into bed at night.

The Local Racing Scene

Kris Callahan: Dirt runs through his veins

M

ost Track Talk columns have focused on drivers. How they got started, the classes they drove and what they want for a future in the sport. Overshadowed most of the time is the guy who actually owns the team, pays the bills, and has given the driver’s seat to someone who has proven he can do the job on the track.

Meet Kris Callahan of Rock Hill, owner of Xcell Motorsports. But before we get too far along with Callahan the team owner, let’s take a look on how he got to where he is today. For most owners and drivers, especially in this area, dirt has played an important part of their success. For Kris, he was introduced to the stuff on the family farm.

“My dad had me driving a Farmall tractor at age four, learning the ins and outs of operating machines. By age six I was operating some of the heavy equipment. I guess I was hooked, as I still do it to this day.” Operating anything he could get his hands on, and working for various companies along the way, Callahan developed skills that rivaled older men who had been at it for years.

“Hoss, his dad, owned a water proofing business and did some dirt work, but mostly concentrated on the water proofing. When I would find some excavating type work, I was the one who would take that work. Finally, around 2009, we officially joined forces and the company really grew.” Hoss retired a few years later, leaving Kris to not only run that side of the business, but he expanded the business to include more work such as land clearing, septic tanks, drainage solutions – actually, anything to do with dirt. “Now called Xcell Grading and Waterproofing, business really took took off.”

The racing part of Kris started at a young age, like so many others, in Go Carts. “We built a track out back and 10 or more of my friends would get together and just race as hard as we could, and as often as we could” That was when he started to really gain an interest in racing. If you ask his dad, “I saw it when we took him — although he might not remember — to Lancaster Speedway at six months old.”

(Photo/Stuart Lord) From Go Carts, sometime later, Kris started racing side-by-side off-road vehicles. “I really loved the competition, we did a lot of traveling, and won a bunch of races in Georgia and over in Statesville, N.C. While this was going on, Dad had been a friend of James and Wayne Thrift and helped them out for years. This is where a connection is born with Callahan’s driver for his Xcell Motorsports team. “Going to the track with dad, I had met Chris Steele, one of the top drivers at Lancaster and many other tracks in the Carolina’s But that was about it at the time, I simply knew him.” We’ve covered their racing in previous columns — the story of Wayne, Chris and his son, Jeremy. “One night dad and I went over to Wayne’s, a Hall of Fame driver. Chris had bought his son a Modified. Dad said we should buy one of those, four days later I bought a Lightning Open Wheel Modified.” From that point forward, Xcell Motorsports was born and has taken off.

An Elite Open Wheel Modified was purchased, then two. Kris drove one while

Jeremy drove the other, his rookie year.

Shortly thereafter, the team now had two lethal Modifieds. While Kris did drive, he wanted the attention geared towards Jeremy, who, in his rookie year would win Rookie of the Year, the Carolina Championship and a second-place finish in the points in the Mid East Championship. Last year, with more experience in the cars for not only the team but also the driver, they won the Mid East South Championship, finish 3rd overall in Mid East and third in the North Division. I asked why he stepped out of his Modified. His answer was quick and simple.

“Many saw the potential in Jeremy. I was having fun but wanted to put all my energy and resources into his car, giving him the best I could do, so I hung up my driver’s suit and it’s been nothing but great things for everyone. I have a fantastic crew that comes to the shop on weeknights, whenever, to make sure the car was ready anytime we went to a local or far away track.

By now Kris is looking at a new challenge as a team owner, moving into the Late Model Division. Purchasing a WP Longhorn car, and with help from Wesley Page owner of John Page Racing and WP Shocks, they are quickly becoming one of the top teams for 2021. “This was a step I felt necessary to not only better the team, but the advancement of Jeremy as a driver. We upgraded the car over the short winter layoff and with all the parts and pieces I have committed to purchase, we’re looking at making a run for this championship and looking at Jeremy as another Rookie of the Year contender in this division.”

There’s another side to Kris that not many know about, his willingness to help other young drivers. “If these kids aren’t helped, we won’t have future stars for the area. I try to help out with sponsorship, as much as I can afford, to better the sport for the future”.

Being a highly successful business owner only goes so far. Outside help is needed to continue upgrading with the newest parts needed to be a contender each and every week. Some of the sponsors helping out include Longhorn

Connections Helping Hands

The Daffodil Principle

A

good friend of mine sent me an email a few weeks ago and I knew I wanted to share the message with all of you. It’s the true story of a lady in California who started planting daffodils in 1958, reaching more than 50,000 bulbs planted by the 1990s. There is a sign among the blooms that says the following: “Answers to the Questions I Know You Are Asking: 50,000 bulbs, one at a time, by one woman. Two hands, two feet, and very little brain.”

Started in 1958, It’s been called the Daffodil Principle. You can google it; there are several articles about this amazing sight and hard-earned beauty in the rocky, hilly land around this person’s house. This lady, having seen a dozen or so daffodils blooming in a neighbor’s yard at her new cabin, one day decided to pick up some herself.

She selected 50 or so bulbs, based on the pictures used on the outside of the bins.

Having no clue what she was doing, she finally looked up from these shriveled up bulbs to ask which end was up. Then she set about planting. This was 1958.

So how does one go about accomplishing 50,000 daffodils? One. Bulb.

At. A. Time. She set a goal for each year, broke that goal up into daily goals, and broke that goal up into smaller goals before lunch and after lunch. And then she set about accomplishing her small goals, which moved her towards the overall accomplishment of tens of thousands of beautiful daffodils.

As I write and ponder this, I’m struck by a few lessons that can be learned from her daffodils. One, big goals aren’t accomplished in one action, but in successfully meeting smaller goals that inches you closer to the overall objective. By setting smaller benchmarks that can be obtained in a reasonable amount of time, you are encouraged to continue your mission and to keep accomplishing the steps needed to get you to the finish line. Two, small actions can have big impact. Her actions weren’t elaborate. Pretty much dig, plant, cover, water. Dig, plant, cover, water. The sight of 50,000 blooming daffodils is far greater than the actions of dig, plant, cover, water.

But without those actions, there would be no blooms. Three, it’s never too late to start setting goals and making change. It seems so easy to think we can’t make a difference, that we are just one person. The tempta-

tion is there to give up and just keep coasting along with the status quo in life. Yes. It would be easier to live like that. My question is, however, is that actually living? The pebble tossed into the water doesn’t have to be huge to make ripples. But you do have to toss the pebble before you’ll get the ripples. Your actions don’t have to be huge to make a difference. But you do have to make a first step and start the process in order to see the needle shift.

So, in thinking about what the first step should look like — first you need to know what interests you. Where is your heart engaged the most? What need have you identified in our community, country or world? What skills do you have and how can they be applied to your interests?

Search for an organization or expert already involved with that issue or interest. Does their mission line up with your vision? Do you need to start your own organization? Or will a project be enough to fulfill you and address the issue.

Maybe animals interest you and you really want to see more pets being adopted. You are an awesome photographer.

You find several organizations working to get animals adopted locally. Maybe of-

fer your skills as a photographer to take great pictures of available pets, increasing their chances of being adopted. Or, same scenario, but your talent/skill is social media. Maybe you could volunteer to start a Facebook page showing the animals available to be adopted. Or, same scenario, but you really want to be hands-on with the animals. Offer to foster animals, volunteer to be a dog walker or a cat petter. Maybe your passion isn’t all animals, but specifically hamsters. And there isn’t a hamster shelter in the area. Maybe research how to start a nonprofit for homeless hamsters or approaching an existing organization to add a hamster division.

And who knows, at the end of your life, you may have saved 50,000 animals, right? But you aren’t going to save any until you make the first move, set your goals, and stay focused. The steps may be small, but the impact can inspire people for years to come. Writing coaches offer interest, guidance, insight

I

f you write long enough, you’ll want help, insight and possibly a coach.

During this series, we will discuss the benefits a writing coach provides, when to use a coach, and where to find a qualified coach who is a good fit for you.

In April, we covered the first four reasons writers seek coaches. They fear that their writing isn’t good enough, aren’t sure where to begin, wrestle with what direction to go and want help determining their purpose.

Seven reasons writers might need a coach 1. Fear judgement of writing 2. Don’t know where to begin 3. Aren’t sure what direction to go 4. Need to define purpose 5. Want help to define audience 6. Unsure of your writing voice 7. Need to develop your messaging Do you see yourself in any of those?

Let’s consider a few more reasons writers should consider coaches.

5. You can’t identify your audience

Many writers enjoy expressing their creativity or want to spare their readers pain by sharing their experiences.

Of course these writers want to be published, but they have questions. How much detail should they include in the novel, what information to include in nonfiction, or who they wish to entertain or serve?

No book appeals to everyone. The Holy Bible doesn’t. The Handmaid’s Tale doesn’t. Not everyone enjoys Stephen King or Kristin Hannah. Even J.K. Rowling has her detractors.

If you don’t know why and for whom you are writing, you can’t determine your niche or advertise to readers who will enjoy your work.

You need help to determine these answers. A writing coach will ask questions and provide direction to help you uncover why you are writing and who will read your finished book.

6. You don’t know your writing voice

Do you write conversationally or with authority?

Who tells the story, or narrates, your novel? Does a character tell what he or she is experiencing, or does an omniscient narrator tell your reader more than the characters know?

Writing a book that guides people to overcome insecurity requires a different voice than a psychology magazine.

Each piece or manuscript you write might need a different voice. Determine your writing voice for the work in process (WIP) and be consistent.

You might start in one voice, say the third-person narrator, and rework the draft to be from the first-person point of view. That’s OK. Just be consistent. You can trust a talented book writing coach to guide your decision.

ested in you and your work. No matter her reputation or personality, you need to find a coach who enjoys your work and takes an interest in helping you deliver your best manuscript.

A talented coach will discuss with you how to approach writing a memoir. If you can’t sell your memoir with name recognition, she might suggest you write a creative nonfiction book instead so you can take liberties with names and times.

Will you then talk with the reader as if you’re confiding in an old friend? Readers respond to that voice and feel they’ve lost a friend when the book ends.

Or will you rant at readers because of your unresolved pain and passion? Are you emotionally ready to write what readers will buy? Maybe you don’t have the voice others will welcome yet. A skilled writing coach will tactfully deliver this message and guide you on how to reach the point when you can share your message effectively.

7. You need to develop your messaging After you define your audience and how to appeal to them, you’re on your way to using language that speaks to your readers.

A writing coach with experience in your genre can help you capture the words and phrases that capture readers.

She detects the purpose, tone and voice of your book. By pulling particularly poignant or funny pieces, she will help you learn what to use in your summary, back cover copy and interviews.

Your summary, word choices and message are critically important when you query your manuscript to a publisher as a book or inclusion in an anthology or book of short stories. You must clearly show your genre, specific audience, and how you are similar to comparable works but different enough to stand out.

Note: One coach might not be able to fulfill all of these needs, so you might move from one to the next in the same way professionals move from one business coach to the next as she learns and grows.

ur solar system belongs to the Milky Way, a galaxy with some 100,000 million stars. The total number of galaxies in the universe is unknown, but a 2021 NASA estimate says that universe contains about 200,000 million other galaxies, some bigger and many smaller than the Milky Way. Small galaxies have a few hundred million stars, and larger galaxies may have more than a trillion.

Galaxies come in three different types: elliptical, spiral, and irregular. Elliptical galaxies are basically football-shaped and range from round to very elongated. They are classified by their appearance to us, rather than how they are actually shaped.

An elliptical galaxy can look round, but is it actually spherical, or is it long and thin, only we are seeing its end from our vantage point? We can’t tell. So, round elliptical galaxies are classified as E0 and those that are just slightly elliptical are called E1, and so on. The most stretched-out, oblate galaxies are classified as E7. Elliptical galaxies are found in a greater range of sizes than other types. The smallest are called dwarf ellipti-

in the way of either gas or dust. Spiral galaxies can be classified as Sa, Sb, Sc, or Sd. Galaxies that are primarily central bulge with tightly wound arms are Sa, and those which have the most loosely wound and prominent arms are type Sd. Spiral galaxies can have a central bar, a large structure that connects their nucleus to their arms. Spirals with bars are indicated by a capital B in their classification. In recent years the classification of galaxies with no bar as SA spirals and those with a weak bar as SAB has come into vogue.

Our own Milky Way galaxy is classified as an SBb. The SB means that it is a strongly - barred spiral and the small b is an indication of the looseness of the arms and their brightness compared to the central core of our galaxy. We’ve never been outside of the Milky Way to take a picture of it, so its classification is still a bit uncertain.

Not all spirals are alike. Some spirals have many short and stubby asymmetrical arms. These are called flocculent (meaning resembling wool or “fluffy”) spirals. Other spiral galaxies have long, well-organized,

cals. In the center of many galaxy clusters, especially the ones with a large number of member galaxies, there is an enormous elliptical galaxy, sometimes with more than one core. These giant ellipticals are known as cD galaxies. The “cD” stands for “central dominant.” These galaxies appear to have engaged in galactic cannibalism over millennia, swallowing and incorporating other galaxies as part of their mass.

Spiral galaxies have a central nucleus or bulge and a disc that contains the spiral arms. The size of the central bulge compared to the size of the arms and the tightness to which the spiral arms are wound are determining factors in their classification. A spiral galaxy which is all central bulge, no arms, and has a disclike shape is called a lenticular galaxy and is classified as SO. I have always found it difficult to tell the difference between a lenticular galaxy and an elliptical one, particularly when the lenticular is seen face on. They are both round in shape. One difference is whether there is a dark lane of dust. Elliptical galaxies have more old stars and not much

and almost perfectly symmetrical spiral arms. Spirals of this type are known as grand design spirals. I find grand design spirals, with their arms stretching over perhaps millions of light years, to be the most beautiful galaxies.

Besides spirals and ellipticals, galaxies can also be classified as irregular. Irregular galaxies do not have a clearly defined shape and have no central nucleus or spiral structure. They are thought to make up 25% of all galaxies.

Galaxies that don’t conform to the three main classifications, usually because of gravitational interaction with another galaxy, are called peculiar. So “irregular” is actually a main class of galaxies, but “peculiar” is the catch-all for a galaxy that doesn’t conform. yc Carole Holmberg is the Planetarium Manager at the Museum of York County. pring is fading and summer is coming on fast. With summer comes, of course, higher temperatures and my increasing desire to do as little as humanly possible. As is the theme every year, I don’t like it when temps go above 80 but the difference this year is, I’m now blessed with a child who, regardless of the weather, demands to be outside as much as possible.

His new-found hobby though, a bit unusual for the less-than-two-year-old he is, is animal watching. While both an American Crow and a Bumblebee are met by pointing and cries of “BIRD! BIRD!” he’ll sit still for up to 10 minutes at a time just patiently watching a bee fly around a flower or a bird sit in a tree. So, this summer, we have a list of animals for us to try and find that are more interesting than the average opossum.

Close to home, the variety of animals you can see is limited only by your patience and willingness to wake up early, stay out till dark, and hold still and quiet the whole time. In York County, I’ve heard the wail of the bobcat, smelled the lingering scent of a passing skunk, and even caught a fleeting glimpse of what I swear was a mountain lion. But I can honestly say nothing has made me more excited in recent memory than when I spotted a fox squirrel less than 5 minutes from my house. Fox squirrels are nearly double the size of our regular eastern gray squirrel and have whiteish fur with a black mask over their faces. Otherwise, they behave just like normal squirrels, but when you’re so used to a certain PAGE 26

type it’s always jarring when something new comes into view. The only thing that would surprise me even more is if I found some flying squirrels…supposedly, a family of them lived around my house years ago but the previous owner found them a nuisance and got rid of them somehow.

An animal that has slowly been creeping its way into York county since the 1990s, the 9 banded armadillo has surprised biologists time and time again with how it continues to adapt to habitat far different than the arid Texas deserts where it came from. Originally thought to be unable to survive the winters, it has shown itself even being able to survive in elevations as high as 2000 feet year-round. While an uncommon sight now, they will most likely continue to become more and more common until you’re used to dealing with them burrowing through your garden. Just remember, while the likelihood of this happening is very slim, armadillos have been known to carry and transmit leprosy; while you should never handle a wild animal, this should be added incentive to keep your distance.

Another transplant from the Southwest that is here to stay is the coyote. Over the last 5 years, I’ve seen more and more of them, in varying sizes, shapes, and hues; two I spotted one morning outside of Van Wyck seemed nearly the size of the wolf I saw in Yellowstone National Park. While many people are uncomfortable with wild predators being so close at hand, you can’t help but respect the only predator in North

America who has not just survived every attempt at extermination but somehow thrived. I’ll take this chance to recommend reading Dan Flores’s book “Coyote America.” By the end of the book, I had a very different view of this animal, and a much more pessimistic view on human’s ability to get them out of the areas they now inhabit.

If you’re willing to travel a few hours from home, one of the greatest areas of biodiversity in the northern hemisphere is in the Great Smokey Mountains National Park. While there are the larger animals that everyone immediately thinks of: black bears, elk, whitetail deer, the real variety happens in the smaller creatures that really make you search for them. Smaller, though, is relative, and number one on my list of animals I most want to find (and number one on my wife’s list for what she’d least like to find) is a hellbender.

No, it’s not what happened after that one boyfriend/girlfriend left you for your best friend. A hellbender is a gigantic salamander that only dwells in the clean mountain creeks and streams. Growing over two feet long and weighing up to five pounds, these gentle monsters are quickly running out of habitat that can support them. And if you can’t find hellbenders, there are another 23 species of salamanders that roam GSMNP. Another thing familiar, but different, in GSMNP is the different varieties of fireflies. Nineteen different varieties are in the park, and while most of them are alike enough that only entomologists would no-

tice the difference, there are two species in particular that always draw a crowd. The first are the synchronous fireflies, Photinus carolinus, which coordinate their flashes so that they all light up at once during their mating season, which is a two-week stretch from the end of May to the beginning of June. Another variety that, while supposedly common across the mountains of the southeast, I’m not sure if I’ve ever actually seen. Phausis reticulata or “blue ghost” fireflies don’t flash in yellow and orange, but instead glow with blue and green.

There is something in observing nature that restores a part of us. One of the biggest joys in hunting is found once you have spent a morning watching the world wake around you: the deer traveling to their bedding areas, the curious squirrel haphazardly looking for nuts, and the male cardinals waging constant battles for territory and female affection. Whether you travel for hours and hours this summer to see a rare species, or just sit at the edge of the Catawba River and watch a bald eagle soar overhead, make the time to sit still and just watch what comes your way. yc Cameron Shook is an avid outdoors enthusiast who has more outdoor experience than most people twice his age. Living With Animals

hen visiting your Vet’s office, you may take note of the letters AAHA proudly displayed on a plaque or sign in red and white letters. Your veterinarian didn’t have a big “Ah Ha” moment when they hung that plaque, but they are quite proud of it. Most folks assume that veterinary facilities are subject to the same types of regulations, standards, and inspections as human hospitals. Sadly, this is not the case. Veterinarians are routinely inspected by OSHA and DHEC, but when it comes to standards of medical care, there is no mandatory regulation of vet-

erinary facilities. Anything that is done is completely voluntary.

AAHA stands for the American Animal Hospital Association. Founded in 1933, AAHA raised the bar of excellence in small animal veterinary facilities by developing standards of medical care that were peer reviewed, non-biased, and evidence based. Within the veterinary industry, you can find a wide variety of recommendations on appropriate healthcare for cats and dogs. This can be confusing for pet parents and veterinary professionals alike. AAHA guidelines ensure that your beloved pet is receiving

the most up to date care through their hospital accreditation standards, educational development of veterinary teams, and frequent updates on cutting edge research in a constantly changing industry.

AAHA is the only organization that accredits veterinary practices in the United States and Canada. Practices that choose to undergo the voluntary accreditation process are evaluated on 940 standards and 18 categories covering all areas of veterinary practice—from anesthesia and pain management to recordkeeping and client communication. Once accredited, practices must get re-certified every three years by showing documentation that they are maintaining the standards and keeping their team members trained and up to date. Having experienced multiple AAHA inspections for accreditation and recertification, I can tell you that it is a stringent process! A practice consultant spends the entire day onsite at your facility, inspecting everything from medical records and dentistry protocols to patient care in the ICU and evacua-

tion plans. At the end of the day, getting the “thumbs up” that your practice has passed the accreditation process is a cause for celebration!

Nearly 60% of pet owners think their veterinary hospital is accredited, but in reality, only 12%–15% of veterinary practices in the US and Canada hold the “AAHA-accredited” designation. So, look for the AAHA symbol the next time you visit your veterinarian. It will usually be proudly displayed for all to see!

Your Food, Your Kitchen, And You

Be creative with recipes you already love

I

often muse about pertinent and practical ways to help people make healthier choices — to help people ‘get it’. I really like teaching active classes where participants are involved. Sometimes it’s with ‘hands-on’ cooking. My decision to cook depends on who the group is, where it’s being taught, etc. (and it doesn’t matter how much I plan and how many questions I’ve asked about the setting, I always have to improvise). Of course, for now I am not teaching in-person classes due to COVID, but hopefully that will change over the next several months.

A while back, I was scheduled to teach a group at a senior apartment complex and they wanted a hands-on cooking class. The class was held in the apartment complex kitchen/conference room (not at my office) which entails hauling a bunch of stuff — food, cookware, utensils, etc.

around in my car. I found myself trying to decide just what to teach that would be ‘easy’ to do, yet worthwhile and useful for my audience. Someone suggested parfaits. I liked the idea but wanted a little more meat (in the program, not in the parfaits — ha!). She also mentioned beans and rice. Of course, it always has to fit my overall objective which to get folks eating more fruits and vegetables.

My program activities often come together when I’m driving, and it struck me: make the theme “easy ways to add fruits and veggies to your day using the meals, dishes and recipes you already love.”

I decided to try her ideas — rice for a side dish (or main dish) and parfaits for a snack. The group was small, so we divided in half. One group prepared the rice dish while the other group prepared parfaits. They were given about 30-45 min-

utes to complete their assigned recipe, we switched and repeated the recipes. Each participant prepared their own individual parfait and rice dish. The only stipulation was that for each the parfait and rice, they were to choose three different ingredients to add each.

The choices for parfait ingredients included regular vanilla yogurt and Greek vanilla yogurt, pineapple, blueberries, strawberries, watermelon, cantaloupe, chopped pecans, granola, golden raisins, apples, honey, etc. Decorative clear, plastic cups were used. They chose the yogurt and at least three fruits and simply layered it as desired.

For the rice dish, we used the microwavable rice cups for ease of preparation. A choice of white, wild, and brown rice was provided, and we discussed the increased fiber content respectively of each variety.

The additional ingredients included fresh spinach, cherry tomatoes, zucchini and yellow squash, onion, garlic, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, basil, and canned black beans, white beans, veg-all, etc. and a variety of dried spices. Participants had to prepare their rice and choose three different vegetables to include and flavor their rice. One person even stir-fried her rice and added pineapple.

When the two groups each finished the second recipe, we all sampled our creations together. It was interesting to me that most of the participants had not ever tried parfaits. I assumed most people have seen parfaits in restaurants. Truthfully, I had not even considered preparing parfaits for my family, or just for me as a snack.

The parfaits looked amazing in clear plastic cups (and mouth-watering)! We discussed how yogurt can be a healthy snack (vs. packaged snack cakes a lot of folks like to eat, among other things) and how easy it was to prepare something so simple. Yogurt is a great source of calcium, good for building bones and for helping lower blood pressure in those individuals managing hypertension.

The rice dishes surprised me even more.

I don’t know about folks from other parts of the country, but rice was a (almost) daily side dish for my family and it is fairly common for southerners to make up some gravy and put it over the rice. Yes, we also put crowder peas or butter beans over the rice, maybe some pear relish (or have rice in a creamy casserole with some veggies). But we do not typically add several vegetables to plain rice. My group was a little skeptical about it, but they added the vegetables and their dishes looked great. Some had an Italian flair to theirs and one person had an Asian flair.

You do not have to make parfaits or rice. But do consider what you typically prepare for meals and snacks and how you could add a fruit/vegetable to increase the nutrients. yc Angela P. Get Off the Couch!

Farmers Markets: A sure sign of spring

W

hat are the signs of spring? For me, they include: • Pollen • Jellybeans and Peeps on store shelves • Pollen • Come See Me and SC Strawberry festivals

Did I say pollen? OK, so you get the picture. Another sign of spring is when local Farmers Markets spring into action!

What’s better than strolling among tables of farm fresh veggies and flowers with coolers of meats and cheeses standing nearby?

Add on breads, spreads and sweet treats — plus fresh eggs, honey and other items.

We’re fortunate in York County to have two Farmers Markets in close proximity to one another — each coordinated by their local municipality. You can start your Saturday off by visiting one or both!

Don’t be afraid to come hungry as some vendors sell breakfast items or items that can double as breakfast, if you know what I mean! Some vendors provide samples for tasting before you purchase all your favorites!

For me, the best part is talking to the vendors who are experts on their items including growing, preparing, baking and other aspects of bringing their items to market. You can meet some really interesting people and hear their stories.

Here are the details on the Old Town Farmers Market in Rock Hill and the Town of Fort Mill’s Farmers Market. The Market in Rock Hill opened in early April and the Market in Fort Mill will open May 8. Check them out Saturday mornings through the fall.

Old Town Farmers Market in Rock Hill

The 4th annual Old Town Farmers Market at Legal Remedy Brewing (129 Oakland Ave.) is open every Saturday 8 a.m. to noon through mid-November. You can find fresh produce and farm-based products from over 20 local vendors.

Among the offerings are local meats and seafood, fresh produce, eggs, honey, bread, and so much more! For a full list of vendors, visit onlyinoldtown.com/farmersmarket. While I’m on the topic of farms, I want to mention the wonderful South Carolina Ag + Art Tour which originated in York County several years ago and now spans 11 counties and 5 weekends. It’s a free, self-guided tour of farms and markets that features local artisans at each stop.

The York County dates for the tour this year are June 5-6 for eastern York County and June 12-13 for western York County.

Visitors can see first-hand where their food comes from, watch artists in action and purchase their works, enjoy music from local musicians, and learn more about rural life.

New Policy Changes Approved

Access to library services and materials is a top priority for the York County Library.

The York County Library Board of Trustees recently voted and approved to eliminate overdue fines on regular materials during last month’s April meeting.

According to the new Overdue Fines Policy, the Library does not charge overdue fines on materials that are late, with the exception of special collection items (Interlibrary Loans, Mobile Hotspots, etc.).

Fees will be assessed for items that are lost or damaged. This new policy signifies the Library Board’s ongoing commitment and support of the YCL community. The York County Library Board of Trustees meets monthly to decide upon policies, finances,

South Carolina State Park Passes

This spring, enjoy warmer weather and the outdoors with your family. Thanks to the South Carolina State Library, all York County Library locations will have South Carolina State Park Pass Kits available for check out. Passes will be available for check out for 1 week using a valid YCL card. Passes are available on a first come, first served basis and can be used to visit all 47 SC State Parks at no cost. Kits must be picked up and returned to the same Library. Support for this program comes from the South Carolina State Library, Institute of Museum and Library Service, and South Carolina State Parks.

Hobby Kits at Lake Wylie Branch

Do you need tools for an at-home DIY project? YCL patrons can check out existing Hobby Kits from the Lake Wyle Public Library. Kits available for check out include tools for either gardening, home repair, baking, or yoga. All kits circulate for one week, and must be picked up and returned to the Lake Wylie Public Library. The annual Literary Competitions include two categories, short story and poetry.

Each category will be judged independently. Authors may enter both the short story and the poetry competition, and entries are eligible to win an award in each competition, however, there will be no repeat prizewinners within the categories. The winners of the 10th Annual Youth Literary Competition will be awarded certificates of achievement.

AWARDS FOR THE 18TH ANNUAL LITERARY COMPETITION: Short Story • 1st Place: $125 • 2nd Place: $75 • 3rd Place: $50

Entry fees for the adult competition are: Non-members: $15 per entry; ACYC members: $10 per entry. There are no entry fees for those entering the youth competition. The Perihelion Book Club has sponsored the Annual Literary Competitions.

The Perihelion Book Club, as a member of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs, began in 1898 as a literary and social club in Rock Hill. Over the years, club members, individually and as a club, have supported literacy in the community in a variety of ways, by conducting story hour at elementary schools, purchasing books for school libraries and funding a scholarship at Winthrop University. Today its members continue to share their love of literature with each other and to eagerly support literacy efforts in the community by raising funds at an auction held annually at its December meeting. The Perihelion Book Club is very proud to encourage writers of short stories and poetry by funding prizes for this competition.
