sons along the way. I’ll always remember a soup I made years ago with way too much tarragon, where I learned a valuable lesson of starting with a small amount. Lesson learned — you can always add more later.

How else can we expand our personal buffets — both food-wise and life-wise — if we don’t push our comfort boundaries, if we don’t challenge ourselves to try something new?

A special quote on my refrigerator reads, “Do one thing every day that scares you.”

by Mary Schmich, a columnist for the Chicago Tribune, though it’s typically misattributed to Eleanor Roosevelt. Our former first lady’s full quote is, “You gain strength, courage, and confidence by every experience in which you really stop to look fear in the face. You are able to say to yourself,

love spices. They make my homemade broths, soups, and other dishes deeply flavorful. Just sitting here typing this, I can feel the warmth spreading through my body after just the first sip of my hot-offthe-stove bone broth. I add cumin, coriander, curry, and cayenne to the water, along with chicken bones and skin from a rotisserie chicken. They’re my go-to, 4-C spices.

It’s fun experimenting with new foods and trying out various combinations. One summer I chose okra as my project, asking local farmers and random people for their favorite cooking methods. I tried different cooking techniques and recipes, finally hitting on my personal favorite — a rough chop, a bit of olive oil, lightly dusted with a seasoning mix, and roasted on high heat.

Both of these sentiments remind me that to grow and become stronger, I must challenge myself. For me, this isn’t just a mental exercise, it’s also physical. My cooking “biceps” get stronger by starting with curiosity, doing some research for recipe ideas, and just creating. My leg muscles get stronger with weight-bearing exercise and stretching. My brain cells are healthier if I feed them with appropriate nutrients which, in turn, help me thrive.

Once basic healthy habits are formed, they can exist in the background, similar to breathing. I feel the need to move throughout the day, every day. I crave pure fructose simply from fresh fruits, with no added sugar. I shop on the periphery of grocery

stores, typically where there are fewer processed foods. And I’m a big proponent of small, quick-grab leftovers that are marked with the date and contents. (My Sharpie pen and sticky notes are handy in a kitchen drawer.)

I splurge on things I love occasionally.

One of my treats is a dreamy biscuit recipe that I learned from watching a PBS cooking show. No kneading, no fuss, and always successful. Plus, they freeze well.

The beginning of a new year is a nice time to start fresh and turn good intentions into action. Whatever you challenge yourself with this year, this season, or this day, make it something to help you learn and grow. From our collective shift towards positive motivations can come newfound discoveries and revelations.

The erroneous statements, embellishments and remarks of Parson Weems

A

ccording to an early biography, when George Washington “was about six years old, he was made the wealthy master of a hatchet of which, like most little boys, he was immoderately fond and was constantly going about chopping everything that came in his way. One day in the garden… he unluckily tried the edge of his hatchet on the body of a beautiful young English cherry-tree…” When his father asked, “Do you know who killed the beautiful cherry tree yonder in the garden,” George replied “I can’t tell a lie Pa… I did cut it with my hatchet.” Upon the realization that his son had courageously told the truth, Washington’s father purportedly cried, “Run to my arms you dearest boy … such an act of heroism in my son is more worth than a thousand trees, though blossomed with silver, and their fruits of purest gold.” 1 This anecdote, from the Life of Washington, is arguably one of the most wellknown stories about our country’s first president. The author, Mason Lock “Parson” Weems, differed from his fictionalized Washington character in that he was very capable to telling lies. Or, at least, embellishing the truth. In fact, the entire “cherry tree story” never occurred.

This is not the only time that Weems fabricated facts to further idealize the subjects of his stories. In 1824, he published a biography of Francis Marion. He co-authored the book with Peter Horry, one of Marion’s fellow soldiers. Horry was so upset with the final draft of the biography that he wrote Weems to complain that he had “mutilated it [the biography] with… erroneous statements… embellishments, observations, and remarks.”2 Who is Mason Locke “Parson” Weems and why did he have a penchant for stretching the truth?

Weems was born on October 11, 1759, in Anne Arundel County, Maryland.

He was the youngest of nine siblings.

He attended Kent County Free School, which later became Washington College in Chestertown, Maryland. In the mid1770s, Weems left the colonies to study medicine in Edinburgh, Scotland. It is unclear as to whether he returned to the American Colonies during the AmeriPAGE 6

Some reports suggest that he served as a surgeon on board a British ship while others indicate that he returned to Maryland. Regardless, by early 1780, Mason Weems was in England studying to become a minister. He achieved this goal around 1784, when he became one of the first American clergymen to be ordained after the American Revolution. He soon returned to the newly independent United States of America and became rector of All Hallows’ Parish in his home of Anne Arundel County.

It was in his position as a minister that Weems became interested in book peddling. In 1788, he purchased twenty-four prayer books with the intent to

sell them. Over the next two years, he began distancing himself from the church and, around 1792, he abandoned his rectorship completely and diverted all his time and attention to book publication and sales. After publishing several books of sermons, the preacher-turned-book peddler partnered with a Philadelphia printer named Mathew Carey and began selling books full time. In mid-1799, Weems finished the first draft of his most famous publication to date, Life of Washington. The first edition of Life of Washington was completed in 1800, a year after George Washington’s death. The final version, printed in 1809, was the origin of many long-held myths about the general, including but not limited to the

famous “cherry tree story.” In addition to embellishing Washington’s honesty, Weems also illustrated his piety with another false anecdote about Washington praying at Valley Forge. According to Weems, the final edition of his Washington biography was intended to be a “moralizing schoolbook” for the young reader.

In fact, the 1801 edition of the book included a preface which read “Youths of America, imitate your Washington.”

This preface helps to explain Weems’ penchant for stretching the truth. His biographies of Washington and Marion are less-than-factual histories and more instructional books on how to become a virtuous American.3 After the death of his father-in-law in 1805, Mason Weems

Three years later, he officially moved to the Belle Air estate with his family, where he lived for the remainder of his life. Remembering Doxology’s gentle spirit, warm heart

W

e lost our 10-year-old golden retriever Doxology (Dox). If you’ve loved and lost a dog, you know the grief and pain this brings. And if you’ve had a one-in-a-million dog, which a lot of us have, you’ve felt the pain all the more. Dox was one-in-a-million.

I knew that the moment I first laid eyes on him.

I’d driven to a home near Cashiers, N.C., to pick him up. He owned me when I first held him in my arms. He was a six-week-old pup, but already an old man. His soft brown, knowing, and piercing eyes took hold of your heart and wouldn’t let go.

As I drove the four hours back home, he rode in the back of our SUV in a large crate. Each time I glanced in the rear-view mirror, our eyes met, and he had me. On at least three or four occasions I called my wife only to say, “Barbara, this is a special dog.” And he was.

For more than seven years he was the picture of the perfect dog. “The King of Dogs,” one of our grandchildren called him. I can’t remember him ever being angry or even snarling at a child who rolled over him as if he were a giant stuffed animal. He was perfect, until we noticed a lump under his right eye. It was cancer, and when offered the choices of doing nothing or opting for an aggressive approach, we took the aggressive path. It gave us another three years with him, but it cost Dox his right eye, part of his right jaw, and that cheek bone. You would never know. He was still the calm, loving, perfect dog.

This past Christmas, I noticed a growth in his mouth — another cancer. This time it was melanoma. It was aggressive, and in spite of the best efforts of our veterinarians, we reached a point where there was nothing more to be done. We knew we had only a few months, maybe weeks,

We marveled at his steadfast heart, his constant and unwavering love for us and his people, at his bravery. He did everything we asked of him. But we weren’t going to allow him to suffer, and on a Monday morning, we said goodbye.

It was one of the hardest things Barbara and I had ever done and one of the most painful things we had ever endured. It still is.

One day, when I depart this body and find myself in the presence of the Lord, my time, however it will be measured, will be filled with the praises and the wonder of Jesus. I know that I will once again be able to hug my mother and walk and talk with my father. There are a lot of people I want to see as well — family and friends, grandparents, some of whom I never met on this side. And I will seek out Peter and John and the Apostle Paul, as well as other giants of the faith — men and women whose words and deeds have guided and molded my journey and my heart.

We have no idea what Heaven will look like, only that it will be perfect. And because of that I know that one day, when I’ve experienced the presence and joy of that surrounding host of saints, I will find myself walking with Barbara in a field of lush, green grass, surrounded by gently rising conifer-cloaked hills. The words of Jesus will echo through that glade: “Behold, I make all things new.” And there will come Dox, charging towards us, his ears flapping in the breeze, his golden hair and majestic tail waving in the wind, and both of his laughing, dancing eyes meeting ours.

hen it comes to relationships, there are all kinds. This is true of humans, but it is also true of plants and animals. Psychologists study the former, but ecologists study the latter. Ecology examines the relationships of organisms (living things) with each other and their environment. Any association between two organisms is called symbiosis, which literally means “living together.”

Most people think of symbiosis as a relationship that is mutually beneficial. In fact, mutualism is just one type of symbiosis. By definition, symbiosis also includes predation, parasitism, and commensalism.

Predation occurs when one organism, the predator, feeds upon another, consuming most or all of the “prey.” We normally think of the predator-prey relationship as one animal killing and eating another animal, and that all predators would therefore be carnivores. However, one organism feeding upon another organism actually includes animals eating plants, meaning that predators can also be herbivores (as least as far as the ecologist is concerned).

With parasitism one individual, the parasite, obtains nutrients at the expense of another, the “host,” but the intent is

usually not to kill the host. Ticks, fleas, and other blood-feeding parasites come to mind, but plants can also be parasites.

Mistletoe draws nourishment from the tree on which it grows, and yellow dodder vines entangle and sap nutrients from ground-dwelling plants.

Perhaps the most obscure type of symbiosis is commensalism. In the commensal relationship, one organism clearly benefits, but the other is neither helped nor harmed. This can be a difficult phenomenon to identify and is usually at the discretion of the ecologist. One example is of marine clownfish that can

swim among the tentacles of venomous sea anemones. Anemones are relatives of jellyfish that do not swim but remain attached to the shallow sea floor. Most fish are paralyzed and consumed by sea anemones, but clownfish are apparently immune to the venomous stings, and they use that immunity to seek refuge from other predatory fish. This obviously benefits the clownfish by providing a safe haven, but it appears to have no effect (positive or negative) for the anemone.

Mutualism is what most people correlate to the term “symbiosis.” The mutualistic association is one in which

yc magazine... York County’s Entertainingly Informative Magazine both members benefit from the relationship. The classic example is of insects and flowering plants. Pollinating insects visit flowers to obtain nectar, a food source. By traveling from flower to flower, the insect picks up and transfers pollen, granting the plant a reproductive benefit.

Another, perhaps less familiar relationship between plants and insects involves structures called galls. Galls are basically abnormal growths on plants that are produced when insects lay eggs within the plant tissues. The tumorous plant growths provide a safe place in which insect larvae

can develop and feed. Often, insects are very specific about the host plants in which they deposit eggs. Hence, the maple gall midge prefers to lay eggs on red maple leaves. Oak galls are formed by tiny solitary wasps that favor — you guessed it — oak twigs.

Technically, this type of insect-plant association would be defined as parasitism, since the insect larvae are obtaining nutrients at the expense of the host plant. Unless there is a major infestation, galls do not necessarily cause long-term damage to plants. However, insects are not the only source of plant galls.

Galls can also be caused by viruses,

bacteria, fungi, and even nematodes (tiny roundworms in the soil). These associations are still parasitism, and frequently referred to as diseases with such unsavory names as “smuts” or “rusts.” Regardless of how we view them, these organisms have adapted to a way of life to utilize the resources of other organisms.

You may recall another article I wrote for YC Magazine entitled “What good is it?” In that article I pointed out that there are lots of microbes, plants, and animals that make a living at the expense of others. Although we may

find them distasteful, they are successful because they do what living things are supposed to do — they survive and reproduce. No organism, whether bacteria, fungi, plant, animal, or even human, exists unto itself. everal calls have come into the office lately about small branches littering the ground under trees. Have you been noticing small branches about the diameter of a pencil and a couple of feet long on the ground beneath your shade trees? If you have, your trees have possibly been affected by a beetle called a twig girdler.

The beetle occurs over much of the eastern and southern United States from New England to Texas and Arizona. It is most common in the South and is found throughout our state wherever its host trees occur. Pecan, hickories, and persimmon are the favored hosts, but elm, hackberry, basswood, sourwood, oak, honeylocust, dogwood, and some fruit trees may be attacked. The fruiting area of PAGE 12

heavily infested pecan trees is often greatly reduced, resulting in low nut yields the following year and sometimes longer.

The best way you tell if the fallen twigs have been caused by a twig girdler is by the neatly severed end of the twig where the adult beetle girdled it part way through. Twigs usually fall to the ground in the fall and winter months.

This insect belongs to the Cerambycidae family commonly known as longhorned beetles. The 20,000-plus species within this family are wood boring insects known as sawyers or round-head borers, because the larval (borer) stage is cylindrical and leaves a round tunnel in the wood. Long-horned beetles are so called because the adult beetles have antennae that are very prominent and are as long

(female) or longer (male) than the length of their bodies. Currently the most notable beetle within this family is the Asian long-horned beetle that was first discovered in the United States in Brooklyn, New York in 1996. This particular beetle has devastated many urban trees in the Northeast and infested trees are cut down and destroyed when found to try to slow the spread of this invasive and destructive species. This species has recently been found in Charleston County and there are current attempts of eradicating it.

The good news is that twig girdlers, although members of an extremely destructive family of beetles, are not usually a serious pest. Among large, established trees, girdling is confined to small branches in the periphery of the crown. In trees

with well-developed crowns, loss of a few branches results in little or no real damage. However, on young trees, damage could be more extensive.

The twig girdler requires a full year to complete its life cycle. The adult beetles emerge from previously girdled twigs in late summer to early fall. After mating, the female twig girdler lays, on average, three to six eggs along a twig just under the bark. She then chews a notch completely around the twig leaving a core of wood intact. The girdled twig later dies, breaks off, and falls to the ground.

There are four life stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. The eggs normally hatch within the fallen twig in early October. The larvae are off-white with a light brown head. They remain dormant

After overwintering, the larvae grow rapidly in the spring and tunnel toward the severed end of the twig by feeding only on the woody portion and leaving the bark intact. A few small circular holes are made in the bark to eject pellets of frass and excrement. The mature larvae close off the gallery with shredded fibers to form a pupation chamber. Pupation occurs during August and September and lasts 12 to 14 days.

Adults are 1/2 to 5/8 of an inch long, dull gray with white markings and have very long antennae. Their coloration is very muted and blends well with the bark of trees making them difficult to see. Female beetles live six to ten weeks and will lay from 50 to 200 eggs before they die.

Controlling twig girdlers with pesticides is usually impractical since they are normally not a serious problem, and it would be next to impossible to keep a pesticide residue on plants to protect them over the 6 to 10 week period of adult activity, much less to try to spray a large tree. The best and most effective way to reduce populations is to collect the fallen twigs in the fall and winter and burn them to destroy the larvae. By doing this populations can be greatly reduced in one or two seasons.

The real ones are the sweetest Ahhh, the fabled hole-in-one. In disc golf we have them just like traditional golf. However, achieving an ace in disc golf is much easier than getting one in ball golf — a sport in which you may go your

entire life without scoring a hole in one.

Though disc golf aces happen more frequently, they are not so common that they are rendered meaningless. They’re a notable achievement and after collecting one

To me, it’s only an ace when you are playing an actual scored round. That could be a tournament round, or a casual round with friends, or even a solo round after work. As long as you are playing for real, it counts. I know that may seem harsh, but you’ve got to protect the sanctity of the accomplishment.

The following scenarios do not count (in my mind): • Aces during practice (Obviously, when you’re throwing a dozen discs at a target, one of them is bound to go in. This does not count).

• Mulligan aces during the round (After totally screwing up a tee shot the first time around, players sometimes will throw another just to prove they can do it. We often call this shot “Player B.” (Aces here do not count either.)

• Black Aces (This happens when you land in an incorrect hole’s target off the tee. Although humorous to everyone present, this also does not count as an ace.)

• Aces when the hole is less than 200 feet.

(I’ll talk more about this later).

• Aces at tournaments designed to produce holes in one. (There are disc golf events where holes are deliberately set short and the goal is to see who can ace or come closest the most times.

These events are fun to a point, but aces here also have that fake, fabricated feel. These aces also do not count.)

Whenever someone says, “Man, I aced this hole the other day. It was incredible.”

In order for me to give the proper kudos for their accomplishment, I have to first find out how it happened. If they say it was during practice or from a mulligan – I shake my head and think to myself, “That is no ace.”

Real aces only happen under pressure Disc golf is about stepping up when the time comes and throwing your best shot.

And of course, there’s pressure associated with that. No one wants to throw an awful shot into the briars or hit the first tree on the right. But that’s what disc golf is about: doing your best when it counts and accepting the result.

Aces only mean something when a disc golfer faces all that pressure and still manages to throw a great shot. Of course, some aces occur after skipping off the ground or nearby trees and are based much on luck. I still consider those type of aces, “real aces” because they were thrown as an actual shot. Just as you can get incredible luck in disc golf you can also get horrible luck. So, take the good luck when it comes is what I say.

Personal Aces

I believe I’ve had seven or eight disc golf aces in 15 years playing the sport. That number would probably be noticeably bigger if I counted the holes in one from the short holes I’ve played at beginner and

school courses. But like I said before, being able to land in a target only 100 to 150 feet from the tee just doesn’t bring much joy to me. I’d compare it to scoring a strike during bumper bowling or slamming a two-handed dunk on a seven-foot basketball goal. Anyone can do that.

Several years since my last one The last real ace I collected was Sept. 16, 2015 on Hole 14 at the Renske Course in Charlotte. I know this so clearly because I wrote that on the Champion Leopard3 that I aced the hole with. Commemorating an ace moment via Sharpie marker on the disc is a practice done by many disc golfers.

Some will also often have cardmates sign the disc.

I can still remember my last ace — no long bomb by any means but it wasn’t a gimmie, either. From the tee, the open fairway veered to the right to a clump of trees 268 feet away. I decided to throw a backhand and I applied enough anhyzer to make it slice to the basket perfectly.

• Or, scream like a banshee so that the entire park can hear you? Neither is wrong or right, just as long as you don’t let the ace go to your head, which can lead to the dreaded ace hangover.

The Ace Hangover

Sometimes after a real ace, especially one that happened out of the blue or on a difficult hole, there is so much excitement running through you that it breaks your focus for the next holes. With nerves running high, it’s not uncommon for players scoring an ace to totally tank the very next hole with a bogey or worse. And if you don’t watch it, that bad hole can spread to the rest of the round. Sure, sometimes an ace is worth the cost of a bad round, but it’s so much better when you’re able to use that ace to boost your final round score.

Ace Runs / Near misses

And it stuck.

Real aces are marvelous any time they happen, but the best ones happen when your friends are there to witness it with you because they know it counts, too. And that was the case that time.

If my memory serves me, it had been a good while since my last ace, so I was pretty excited to get that one at Renske.

And then when you finally do get close, you’ll probably get a bunch of ace runs (near misses), seeing — with great disappointment — your disc splash out of the chains or hit either high or low on the target.

But when you finally get one for real — and I mean for real — it’s totally worth it. yc

WYC aims to help 3,000 York County families achieve financial stability by 2030.

From Outputs to Outcomes

When we talk about our progress on our Bold Goal, you may hear us talk about outcomes and outputs. The outcomes are what we ultimately hope to achieve in providing services to our clients. The outputs are the actions or items that contribute to achieving an outcome.

You will see us reporting outputs such as the number or percent of participants enrolled in job skills training; clients who complete GED, certificate, and/or degree programs; participants who complete financial literacy courses; clients that signed up for income maintenance program(s); and families who take advantage of the EITC. Each of these outputs is directly related to an outcome.

As with any goal, we have short-term, intermediate, and long-term outcomes that we hope to achieve. As a first step in preparing families for financial stability, we are focusing this year on our short-term outcomes. These include new knowledge or skills about financial stability, including job-hunting skills, demonstrating soft skills, awareness of supportive programs, and knowledge of effective financial practices (e.g., budgeting, credit score). Each of these shortterm outcomes, though they may seem simple, help to prepare our families for the road towards financial stability.

We understand that families who have financial literacy skills will be able to make wise financial choices.

If we link families to products, education, and services, then they will start to build the financial tools and resources they need to make wise financial choices and progress down the path to finanDeposit Photo cial stability.

Individuals who are working, but do not make enough to support their families will benefit from programs that connect them with the knowledge and skills to start on a sustainable career path and gain employment with a livable wage or increase their wages.

Finally, families who are living below the financial stability line do not make enough to make ends meet. By increasing their access to supports and resources to reduce their costs and increase their disposable income, we can ensure that families can balance their budgets and begin to save for the future.

While it may not seem, at first glance, that the outputs we are discussing have to do with our ultimate goal, Financial Stability, we have to understand that it is a long road to stability, with many stops along the way. By meeting our clients at the starting line, being sure they are getting access to the resources they need along the way, we can confidently continue our work knowing that these families are on their way to being financially stable by 2030- one small step at a time.

One step in making sure we are on the path to meeting our goal, is ensuring we are serving the right clients. The UWYC staff identified a Target Population, or a set of individuals who we feel have the potential to go from surviving to thriving. All programs funded by UWYC’s Fi-

Connections Helping Hands

One little word …

A

s many of you know, I like to focus on one little word each year to apply to my life as a self- improvement type of practice. Some years have worked incredibly well and other years, well, the word fell by the wayside and not much improvement was made surrounding that word. For the past several years, I’ve also encouraged you to pick a word and apply it to your life. I usually check in every so often via my column to remind you of your word while I give an update as to where things stand with my own personal journey.

Deposit Photo Now, usually I struggle to find the word to fit the year. I’ll hem and haw, debate and reconsider. I’ve also been known to scratch my word completely and find another as the ball drops on the ending year. It’s serious business finding a word you’ll be stuck with for 365 days. And even crazier — you have no idea what is coming down the pipe for the new year, therefore, you just have to trust you are on the right path and keep focusing on the improvements that come by applying your one little word to your life.

Interesingly, 2021’s word (or phrase) hit me like a ton of bricks. A few weeks ago, I received an email from a reader. She clipped an article I wrote several years ago for YC Magazine about focusing on your blessings. She explained that she pulls it out every Thanksgiving to share with family and friends because the message of gratitude really resonated with her. I was totally blown away, completely caught off guard. She will never know how it touched me that she reached out several years later to share with me how something I created is now part of their family Thanksgiving tradition. Wow. This came on the heels of a very interesting election season, which is where I

work for the “day job.” After pulling 80plus hour work weeks for an extended amount of time, all of us were dragging pretty badly. Added to the work hours were the phone calls from not happy voters and the ever-present concern about the ‘Rona. Not that it was all a bad experience, just exhausting. All throughout the lead-up to the election, I received compliments from strangers, coworkers, friends, young folks, older folks - it was just downright bizarre. It happened frequently enough to give me pause. But it really helped me push through, knowing the work I was doing was noticed and appreciated, all because someone was willing to put themselves out there a bit and share with me their thoughts.

Just as life was calming down and returning to normal, this reader blows me out of the water all over again. Her message had such a huge impact — so much so that I immediately thought this is my phrase for this upcoming year: “Kind Candor.” Reaching out to people and letting them know what you appreciate about them.

Seriously, 2020 threw us some curveballs and 2021 is going to start off with some rocky roads. So, in a time of stress, uncertainty and struggles, wouldn’t it be amazing to hear positive comments from people who have noticed something great about you and they aren’t afraid to tell you? I’m not talking about superficial niceties. But honest, solid, real comments that will stick with that person for weeks, months, and years to come. Things we may take for granted they already know about themselves or things we think they excel at that makes them stand out. We all notice things about others — especially those we love — that we can share with them about how awesome they are!

It can feel awkward, complimenting someone. Especially when most of us are really bad at accepting compliments. But it’s OK. Awkward is fine. They still heard your message and whether you realize or not (or they realize it or not) they will have that kernel of positive truth tucked away and it will impact their image of themselves.

So, there is my one little phrase for 2021: Kind Candor. I’m excited to share some positive vibes with the people I know and love. Sprinkle some sunshine all across the country with honest compli-

ments for folks. And I know by doing this, it will make me feel the good vibes, too.

Photography View Finder

I

think it’s safe to assume that most of us have a love-hate relationship with Facebook. I know I do. I hate the drama that is often played out on Facebook, and I hate my lack of time management skills when I’m scrolling rather than doing actual work. But I do love the ability to easily keep up with family, friends, and with fellow photographers near and far. I belong to so many Facebook group pages that I have lost count-I’m sure Facebook knows exactly how many-but there are a few group pages that I pay more attention to than others. One such group is hyperlocal to us and that’s the Rock Hill, SC Photographers Facebook group page.

As the name suggests, this Facebook page is for photography enthusiasts connected, in some fashion, to Rock Hill. Of course, being a photography enthusiast from anywhere in York County should provide sufficient connection to the Rock Hill group. This Facebook page was started in July of 2013. Three of the four founding PAGE 18

members, Tom Martin, Peter Krenn, and Dan Lefebvre (pictured above) are still in York County and very much active in the group; Tom and Peter continue to serve as administrators for the Facebook page.

At the time of its inception, there were multiple photography-oriented groups and clubs nearby to Rock Hill, but all or most were across the state line in Charlotte, North Carolina. The core group responsible for the new Facebook page wanted a way to expand their own technical and aesthetic understanding of photography, and to provide a forum for others to do so as well. As Tom Martin explained to me, “Our overriding goal has always been to provide a welcoming and constructive forum for all local photographers to learn, develop, and share the technical and artistic elements of photography.”

One of the core concepts of the new group was that it was to be kept simple, no officers, no dues, and no expenses. In an effort to keep the group very local-cen-

tric, the administrators make an effort to vet folks wanting to join the group, making certain there was some specific connection to the area. Tom and the others expected twenty to thirty photographers might be interested in joining. To their surprise, the group grew to over two-hundred members within just a couple of years. At the time of this writing, there are 404 members in the Rock Hill, SC Photography Facebook group.

Prior to the onset of COVID-19 concerns, members met routinely as a social group, one Saturday morning a month, anywhere from two to twenty members could be found hanging out at one of the coffee shops around Rock Hill. On a Thursday evening, you could find similar numbers hanging out at one of the local breweries. It was not uncommon for members to leave these social gatherings in smaller groups to go off on a photography adventure. While the coffee shops and brewery meetings are on hiatus due to Covid-19,

group members still use the Facebook page to announce and invite others to join them on photo outings where appropriate.

On the group page, members can simply do a show-and-tell, sharing new or old images they’ve captured. If desired, one can ask for constructive critique and criticism of images. Got questions about cool locations to photograph? This page is the place to ask. Got questions about how a camera or a piece of editing software works? This is a good place to ask. Looking for local events to photograph? Want a photo-buddy to accompany you to a sweet location?

Yep, you can ask about that too.

I’ve been an active member of this Facebook page for a few years now and I’ve had an opportunity to observe the collective group fairly well. In many Facebook groups, to the detriment of the group, I sometimes see dominant personalities develop; I haven’t seen this in this particular group. While there is a core of folks who interact more frequently, I’ve observed it to be a welcoming environment for all skill levels. My take on the membership is that it’s a good mix of everything from rank amateurs, to talented and serious enthusiast photographers, to a handful of working pro-photographers. Above all, everyone seems to want to help. One thing that I have enjoyed about this group is the lack of drama. Whether this particular Facebook page naturally attracts less drama, or the admins have worked hard to keep it drama free, either way, it’s worked out well so far.

Many of the Facebook pages I belong to, I may only lurk in and rarely interact with others on that page. But a few pages, such as the Rock Hill, SC Photography page, I find rewarding and a good return on my time to be involved. I’ve met some really good folks there. I’ve made lasting friendships and gotten help with an occasional question or problem. I invite you to take a look with an eye to joining the page. Make sure to take a look at the very few rules the page does have, and I suggest reaching out to the Admins if you have a question. Looking Up

The Dog Star has a pup

T

he Sun is the brightest star in the Carolina skies. But what is the next brightest star, the brightest star in our nighttime sky? It is not the North Star. That star barely makes the top 50 list and is important because of its position above Earth’s North Pole, not its brightness. The brightest nighttime star is named Sirius.

Sirius is called the Dog Star because it is the brightest star in the constellation of Canis Major, the large dog. Sometimes Canis Major is portrayed as the dog of Orion. Historically many cultures have attached special significance to Sirius and see it as a dog in the sky.

Sirius is almost twice as bright as the next brightest star, Canopus. Pointlike objects brighter than Sirius are usually planets or artificial satellites.

From Earth, Sirius always appears dimmer than the planets Venus and Jupiter, and sometimes it is dimmer than Mars and Mercury as well.

Sirius is a binary system, two stars that orbit each other. Most stars are multiples and single stars like our Sun are more the exception than the rule. The two components of Sirius are named Sirius A and Sirius B. It is Sirius A that overwhelmingly contributes to the brightness, while Sirius B is much fainter, currently 10,000 times fainter than its companion.

Sirius A is an ordinary star. While it is twice as massive and 25 times more luminous than the Sun, that is mere peanuts compared to supergiants like Rigel or Betelgeuse. It appears to be so bright mostly because it’s close to us. At only 8.6 light years away, Sirius is the fifth closest star system to our Sun. Faint Sirius B was not first directly observed until 1862 by telescope-maker Alvan Clark while testing a new large refracting telescope. Sirius B is sometimes called “the Pup.” It is a white dwarf star, many times smaller and fainter than Sirius A. Sirius B is now about the mass of the Sun and only about the size of Earth, but it must once have been the more massive and luminous star of the pair, because it has evolved into a white dwarf already.

According to stellar evolution theory, the more massive the star, the shorter its lifespan and the more quickly it goes through its evolutionary stages. White

Barstow (University of Leicester) dwarf stars have exhausted the nuclear fuel in their cores and have collapsed down to a very small size. It is predicted that Sirius A will also eventually become a white dwarf when it exhausts the hydrogen fuel at its core a billion years from now. Our Sun will also end its life as a white dwarf in another 5 billion years. Then, much like Sirius B has and Sirius A will become, the Sun will pass through a red giant stage before becoming a white dwarf. With no internal heat source, a white dwarf slowly cools as its remaining heat is radiated into space, a process that takes over two billion years.

Sirius A and B orbit each other with a separation of about 20 AU, roughly the distance between the Sun and Uranus,

although they can get as close as the Sun-Saturn distance to each other during each revolution. Each orbit takes 50.1 years. The Sirius system is between 200 and 300 million years old. Originally, both stars were bright bluish-white stars.

Sirius B reached its current state as a white dwarf about 120 million years ago.

Binaries usually look like single stars because the individual stars are so close together compared to their distance away from us. The contrast in brightness makes the Sirius system especially challenging to observe.

The word Sirius comes from the Greek and means glowing or scorching. The star Sirius was important in ancient Egypt, because when Sirius was

first spotted rising just before dawn in the eastern morning sky each year, it presaged that the Nile River would soon flood and the annual flooding of the Nile meant that the inhabitants needed to plant their crops in order to use the Nile to irrigate them.

The phrase “Dog Days of Summer” refers to the ancient Greek beliefs about Sirius. The ancient Greeks noted that Sirius first appeared visible before dawn right before the hot and dry summer.

They thought that emanations from Sirius caused dogs to behave abnormally, plants to wilt, and people to weaken. Because it is so bright, Sirius twinkles wildly and would seem to to twinkle more in the unsettled weather conditions of early summer. To Greek observers, this signified malignant emanations radiating from the star. Anyone suffering its effects was said to be “star-struck.”

If you look at Sirius in the winter night sky, it is bright and white in color.

Interestingly, it was sometimes historically described as reddish by ancient Greek and Roman astronomers. The Roman philosopher Seneca said that it was redder than Mars. But not everyone saw Sirius as red. Ancient Chinese records, from over two thousand years ago to the present, all describe Sirius as white. Several explanations have been offered. Perhaps the stellar evolution of one of the two binary stars could be responsible. However, this explanation has been rejected on the grounds that a few thousand years is much too short a time span and that there is no sign of the nebulosity in the system that would be expected had such a change taken place. Alternative explanations are either that the description as red was just a poetic metaphor for ill fortune, or that the dramatic twinkling of Sirius as it rose in the summer left an observer with the impression that it was red. To the naked eye, Sirius often appears to be flashing with red, white, and blue when it is near the horizon. yc Carole Holmberg is the Planetarium Manager at the Museum of York County. The Local Racing Scene

Grayson Sutton: Learning to race

G

rowing up in a family that races on dirt is something that you might want to try yourself. For Grayson, he took the almost normal path down here in the South, GoKarts. These little lawnmower type engine powered carts give a kid an idea how to handle sliding on dirt, driving in traffic with other kids your same age.

It’s a great way for kids to learn patience, being responsible, and having a good head on their shoulders. And for many, moving up into full size cars, perhaps starting in a four-cylinder division was the way to go.

Bubba Sutton, his dad, is a very successful driver and builder. A while back, he suffered a very painful injury in a work-related accident. In fact, he will be out for perhaps over a year before he can get back in his race car. One of the races he had won in 2019 was a $10,000 to win street stock race at Carolina Speedway. After that win, the car was retired behind his Woodshed Race Cars shop in York. And there it sat, covered up, while a new car was being

built. Following a couple of races, in fact winning the first time it was out, Bubba suffered his injury. What happened next is the story about Grayson. He wanted to race like his dad, his cousins and uncle, but there was just one hitch. Bubba insisted he had to work on the car and learn the mechanics. Did I mention Grayson is only 11 years old? And so, the journey begins.

Uncovering the race car behind the work shop and getting it into the space where he’ll learn about the car, he started by taking apart things like the brakes and various body panels and installing an engine -- of course with the help of dad. But Bubba made it very clear, you will not be given a silver spoon into the sport, and just like your cousins, you will have to work for it. And work he did. Day and night, sometimes with his dad working, you could find Grayson in the shop working and learning.

He also had another teacher, Chris Huffstetler, who, with Bubba, builds winning race cars for others. With two great teachers guiding him, this 11-year-old was ready for his first-ever time in a full-size race car.

It’s practice day at Cherokee Speedway a short while back. I was there, as well as his whole family. So, let’s summarize that day.

Practice is broken down into ten lap sessions. Session 1: pretty slow going around the track, learning where to brake and setup for the turns. Pulling into his pit space, everyone is surrounding the quite nervous driver. Dad and son step aside, a few words of encouragement are passed along, a smile returns to Grayson’s face. Session 2: The kid is quicker, picking the right spots where to turn and stay away from the walls.

Again, he pulls in, less nervous, more pep talking. After the car is cooled off it’s time for Session 3. This time, it’s a little different. Instead of only a few cars out on the track at the same time as Grayson, some of the faster divisions cars are out there, including Late Models. Doesn’t seem to be bothering the kid as these faster cars go around and under him; he is staying out of their way but continuing to drive a lot faster. At this point, I had to leave before the last practice session. Later that night, I saw a video posted on Facebook of the last

10-lap session. When the video started, I thought someone else was in the car, sort of checking it out. The car was three times quicker than when the day started. I was wrong, Grayson, having gained a ton of confidence, was driving the wheels off the car. I could not believe he was driving. Not bad for the first time in a race car. Shortly thereafter, he entered his first-ever race at the ultra-fast, half-mile track at Lancaster Speedway. Long story short, Grayson Sutton, second time driving, first feature race, finished in second place. That, folks, is a Cinderella story. Now, I started writing this on Sept. 6. Again, at Lancaster, he is starting in second position for the feature.

This time, the story does not have the same ending, as another competitor drove him into the wall, causing damage that prevented him from continuing racing. Maybe that’s part of being a new driver, maybe the guy who hit him didn’t show him any respect as a new driver. Grayson was upset, but understanding racing, the next day he’s out there in the shop surveying the damage and getting ready to repair the race car for his next outing.

It’s been another month, with more laps under his belt, a few pretty good finishes, and a few more dents and repairs made.

But the confidence level is rising, and his skills are making him look like more than a rookie. Grayson is listening, watching others, and learning new ways to work on the race car with a little less supervision from dad and Chris.

It’s now the end of the season for most.

What will 2021 bring for Grayson? It looks like Bubba will, if things work out, race a limited schedule in 2021 while devoting his time and efforts for his son. With one of the cars being put up for sale, Bubba will be keeping the 809 car and Woodshed Racecars will be building a brand new Pure Stock race car for Grayson. And a big load of that work will be handled by Grayson, with supervision from his mentors his dad and Chris. And of course, Track Talk will be following the journey of a up and coming York, S.C. dirt track racer. “Doing things … with kindness”

H

appy New Year, 2021…

It’s hard to believe 2020 has come and gone, and yet, we’re in the “thick” of things – COVID-19/vaccine, transition of leadership, economy, stress/ strain, and the uneasiness/uncertainty as we embark on the New Year 2021.

Here are some thoughts as we go into 2021: “Time is our most irreplaceable asset- we cannot buy more of it. We can only strive to waste as little as possible.” and “We let people and obligations impose on that time, only rarely asking: What am I getting in return here?” Simply put, “put real thought into every transaction: Am I getting my money’s worth here? Is this a fair trade?”

With that stated, how are you beginning to spend your time into the New Year 2021? As I am continuing to read the book “Return to Love, by Marianne Williamson, I borrowed her question to ponder on how we utilize time (doing things) – “When I do anything, how should I do it? Kindly!”

What if the things we do come from kindness? Can you imagine if all the energy of kindness we stirred unleashed the depths of kindness in those around us? She had me to think about important figures in our world – they were only one; however, as a result of their kindness, the world changed (i.e., Gandhi, Jesus, Martin Luther King, and etc.).

The world is continuing to change, as time keeps on “ticking.” Thus, what we do with time is the choice we choose. And I would like to propose for 2021, to doing things with kindness (the one word).

Kindness is defined as “desiring to help others; expressing goodwill; or charitable.”

Thus, the world of kindness would look in helping others, expressing goodwill and/or being charitable.

Now, making a shift from others to self, in the New Year 2021, what are you doing to being kind to yourself? Yes, being kind to self is really the crux of this article. If I can be kind to self, I can be kind to others. You have read many times change has to start with me. You might have read the quote, “To love oneself is the beginning of a life-long romance,” by Oscar Wilde. How about if we changed the quote “To be kind to oneself is the beginning of changing the world.” With all the chaos, conflicts, uncertainties, and etc. kindness may be the antidote or “vaccine” to healing a world that is becoming unkind.

How do we begin 2021 with kindness to self?

Probably for a lot of us, be less critical and be supportive and warm to self (often identified as forgiveness and grace).

Here are some other ways to be kind to self in 2021: Carve Out Some Time For Yourself. Every day carve out some time for yourself and do something that brings you joy. Be kind to yourself by giving yourself some “me time” each day.

◊ Lock your bedroom door, turn on some music, and dance around in your underwear. ◊ After all, nobody knows how to soothe you better than you.

• Give Yourself Recognition. Become aware of your own achievements and give yourself recognition. When you do something you’re proud of, stop for a minute and dwell on it. Praise yourself and relish the achievement. Compliment yourself.

• Take Good Care of Yourself. One of the best ways to show yourself kindness is to get enough sleep, eat fruits and vegetables, and get some form of exercise on a regular basis. In addition, choose a way to release stress, be well groomed, and look after your appearance.

• Treat Yourself. You don’t have to wait for someone else to give it to you as a gift. Give it to yourself.

• Soothe Yourself. Did you have a tough day? Did you get into an argument with a co-worker or a friend? Did you bomb your presentation? Was it one of those days in which everything that could wrong, did go wrong? Be kind to yourself by soothing yourself. Do the following: ◊ Soak in a hot tub. Add scented bath oil. ◊ Give yourself a scalp massage. Rub your feet. ◊ Make yourself some hot cocoa with little marshmallows in it and sit back with a mystery novel.

◊ Cultivate your inner advocate. Voice in your head: the one that defends you. When your inner critic comes at you with ridicule and scorn, your inner advocate jumps in and presents arguments on your behalf. Be kind to yourself by cultivating your inner advocate. ◊ Stop trying to be perfect. Perfection is unachievable. Instead of setting a standard of “perfection” for yourself, aim to improve, one step at a time. ◊ Remind yourself of your good qualities. Maybe you’re a little heavier than “the ideal body type,” but you have long, lustrous hair.

Maybe you’re not great at sports, but you’re an ace at math. Maybe you tend to be melodramatic, but you have a great sense of humor.

Always remind yourself of your good qualities. ◊ Lift yourself up. When you fail, make a mistake, or do something wrong, you have two choices. You can tear

yourself down, or you can lift yourself up. People who are kind to themselves choose the latter. ◊ Tell yourself, “I am enough.” We’ve all had times in our lives when we’ve thought, “I’m not good looking enough, or smart enough, or strong enough to get what I want.” Stop it with the “I’m not enough” self-talk and replace it with the following; ◦ “I’m enough, just as I am.” ◦ “I’m worthy.” ◦ “I deserve to be happy.” ◦ “I deserve to have everything I want.” ◦ Tell yourself that nothing has to happen to make you worthy. You are already worthy enough. ◊ Forgive yourself. We all mess up.

Look at the following: ◦ Maybe you did something in the past that you’re not proud of. ◦ Perhaps you failed to stand up for yourself and you let someone else get the better of you. ◦ You may have missed a great opportunity because you got scared. ◦ Maybe you failed to follow through on an important goal. ◦ If you’re angry at yourself, you need to show yourself kindness: stop blaming yourself, resolve to do better from now on, and forgive yourself.

• Respect yourself. Self-respect is valuing yourself for who you are, and not allowing others to dictate your value. It’s trusting yourself, thinking for yourself, forming your own opinions, and making your own decisions. In addition, it’s refusing to compare yourself to others.

Finally, self-respect is about keeping your promises to yourself and following through on what you tell yourself that you’re going to do.

There’s only one person in the world you can choose and that’s yourself. Be kind to yourself. Give your goals flight

I

n your wildest dreams, what would writing success mean to you?

Take a moment and consider your dreams past and present, achieved, dashed, and still buried in your heart.

Record your wishes where you can find them easily. If you write in longhand, you will likely feel a stronger connection between your heart’s goals and your head’s rebuff.

If you need to get paper and a pen, go and come right back. I’m here waiting to help you make those dreams come true.

Abolish boundaries

Your list of dreams doesn’t have to be realistic, complete, or perfect, but you must feel emotionally connected to achieving and visualizing your dreams as reality.

Wish, hope, and fantasize. Give breath to your aspirations with your words and actions.

You don’t have to share these dreams, but review them daily. Read them aloud,

so you hear yourself speak life into your dreams every day. Read your affirmations aloud with energy! Go into a closet and talk to your coats if you must!

Reproach any thought that interferes with living your dreams if you begin a demeaning conversation with yourself.

Speak aloud with authority what will be different when your list comes true. Entertain no pushback, negative thoughts, or dismissive behaviors.

Write more

Over the next several days, visualize your life with those dreams fulfilled.

Write in a way that motivates you to take steps toward recognizing yourself as a successful writer. Use your vocabulary, imagination, and unbridled wishes to create this reality that will come to fruition if you establish an action plan. The next step is to write and reach for your goals. Review your dreams and goals daily to find cause for a small hooray!

You invite debilitating overwhelm into your psyche when you tell yourself and others, “I’m going to write a book,” because you don’t know the steps required to reach that broad goal.

Research, read my past columns, and join a writers’ group to learn more about how a successful writer achieves his or her goals.

My Facebook group, www.facebook. com/groups/TheWritersCircleGroup, is a place where you can talk to published and aspiring authors of books, magazine articles, blog posts, and other professionals in the publishing industry.

Success comes incrementally, and as you begin to accomplish small steps, you will feel comfortable sharing more about your dreams. This is when you realize how much you want to be in a community of writers.

Set attainable goals

The quote, “A goal is a dream with a deadline,” is attributed to Napoleon Hill, the author of Think and Grow Rich.

After completing the dream list exercises above, you should be able to define your goals and establish measurable steps. Take an hour or less to lay out a loose plan for the next 90 days.

To accomplish your goals, what has to happen every month? Do you need to check in with an accountability partner or attend a writing or critique session?

What must you do every week to continue moving forward? Maybe you need to write the first draft of a chapter. Perhaps you need to research a specific number of publishers.

Daily action is what motivates you to continue. You don’t want to wreck your past successes. Keep up the consistent work, and celebrate your commitment.

What will you do daily? If you can’t write at length daily, write ideas that come to you, add pictures or clippings to your file, or take a step that lets you know you are keeping your commitment to your writing goal. Then measure your commitment by the actions you carried out.

As you work through the next 90 days, reassess your daily, weekly, and monthly actions. Add the practices that worked best to encourage your routine. Drop those that don’t. With every deadline you achieve, mark your calendar, celebrate, and move closer to your goal.

Accept accountability

Revealing things that feel intimidating or embarrassing snatches your dreams from the clutches of fear that drop you over the cliff to doom. Sharing your dreams causes you to strengthen your wings like a bird shoved from the nest.

Those who support you will catch you and give you the wind to land safely.

Tuning In To York County

Musical oddities of 2020

T

he Christmas decorations are packed away. “Auld Lang Syne” has been sung, and you downed the last of the holiday eggnog two days ago, even though it turned bad probably three days ago. Your stomach should be feeling better in a few more days.

Your prized Christmas gift, the battery-operated big mouth bass that flops around and sings, has been hung in a position of prominence above the mantel in your den. The batteries should run out in a few days, and you’ll never have to hear “Take Me to the River” again.

Yeah, you still got that fruit cake your Aunt Beulah made for you, but you got that figured out. You’ll hang on to it until Christmas 2021 when you’ll regift it to the people who gave you that weird-scented candle that they forgot you regifted them last Christmas and regifted it back to you this Christmas. You don’t want them getting the candle. They might start to get suspicious if you regift it to them again. You’ll figure out somebody else to regift the candle to. You’ll figure out how not to end a sentence with a preposition, too.

It’s been a rough year for you, but with the bad there has been some good. With the pandemic going on, you’ve had to spend most of your time with the people you live with, and you live with your mother-in-law. That’s bad, but the good is, now she has to wear a mask and stay six feet away from you.

Your ex-wife’s attorney moved in next door to you, then started dating your ex, then married her, so now you have to see your ex-wife every morning on your way

depositphotos.com to work. That’s bad, but the good news is, with what he and your ex got from the divorce settlement, they have enough money to afford a nicer neighborhood, so they’ll probably be moving soon.

Oh, and you caught COVID-19 because nobody around you wore a mask or practiced social distancing. The good there is, since you can no longer smell, you should be able to use that weird-scented candle yourself now.

OK, so the above scenario might not be exactly yours, and it’s not mine, either, but it certainly has been a tough year, and all of us will be glad to put 2020 mercifully behind us. Before we do, though, let’s take a look and see if we can find any small glimmer of positivity on the 2020 music scene.

Despite conspiracy theories that they are still alive, the music world heard nothing new from Elvis, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain, Tupac Shakur, or Michael Jackson in 2020. We lost John Prine, Joe Diffe, Ellis Marsalis and a few more from Covid-19.

We lost a string of other great artists, too, from other causes, including Little Richard, Kenny Rogers, Helen Reddy, Eddie Van Halen, Neil Peart, Charlie Daniels,

Johnny Nash, Mac Davis, Spencer Davis, Bill Withers, and Jerry Jeff Walker.

As the nation and the world slowed down and even shut down to try to prevent or at least slow down the devastating effects of COVID-19, live musical performances everywhere halted. This lack of musical performances itself seemed odd to a planet accustomed to always having live music easily accessible. There were other musical oddities that seemed worth mentioning. Here are a few of them.

1. Kanye West ran for President. That’s right. President with a capital “P,” President of the United States. Apparently, being a billionaire hip hop artist wasn’t enough. Kanye said he was not running for President for the Republican Party or for the Democratic Party, he was running for the Birthday Party. Yes, Kanye wanted everybody to know he was taking this running for President thing se-

riously. Included in Kanye’s political platform were prayer in school and giving more government support to religious groups. Well, that seemed plausible. He also asked his campaign staff to refrain from “fornicating outside of marriage.” OK, so that last thing did seem a bit random. Mostly the part about Kanye having a campaign staff. At a press conference in Charleston, Kanye’s only campaign appearance, Kanye broke down in tears. Even tears didn’t seem to help, though. Out of 180 million votes cast in the 2020 presidential election, only 60,000 were for Kanye, or about .003%. Kanye did do well, though, in a group of other write-in candidates that included Mickey Mouse, Santa Claus, Grumpy, Anthony Fauci, Cosmo Kramer, Pee Wee Herman, Goofy, Jesus, my mother, and Ronald McDonald.

2. Eminem introduced a new album entitled, Music to Get Murdered by. Human rights activists found it appalling that Eminem would have such an album title. Grammar Nazis found it appalling that Eminem would end an album title with a preposition.

3. Mr. Peanut died. No, he wasn’t a music person. In fact, he wasn’t even a

person, he was an advertising icon.

We shouldn’t be mentioning Mr. Peanut in a music column, but Mr. Peanut dying- isn’t that just weird? No official cause of death was listed, though death from being shelled by a large mammal was considered a possibility.

Dumbo was listed as a prime suspect, as Dumbo was depressed and overeating after a poor showing as a writein candidate in the 2020 presidential election, getting less than .003% of the vote. Dumbo claimed to be out of town when the unfortunate demise of Mr. Peanut occurred but said a famous hip hop artist could corroborate his alibi. An attorney for Dumbo said, “Normally Mr. Dumbo would be here to refute this accusation in person.

However, he just flew in from a press conference in Charleston, and boy, are his ears tired!”

4. Former vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin appeared on The Masked Singer and closed out the show by singing Sir Mix-A-Lot’s “Baby Got Back.” You think I’m making this up, but I’m not.

5. After 35 years with the group, Flavor Flav was fired from Public Enemy after Flavor Flav refused to appear at a performance by Public Enemy at a

Bernie Sanders rally. In a statement, Public Enemy said the group did not part ways with Flavor Flav over his political views, and Mr. Flav seemed to confirm that statement. Said Flavor Flav, “Some people tried to say I did this because I’m a Trump supporter and that’s not true.” Mr. Flav then concluded his statement with two words that indicated great indifference toward the 45th President.

6. Country music group Lady Antebellum changed their name to Lady A after the George Floyd protests to remove any association the old name might have had with the Civil War, slavery, and the Antebellum South.

Oddly, the group kept the name “lady” even though two of its three members are male. After announcing their name change, a 61- year-old black blues singer in Seattle named Anita White surfaced saying she had gone by the name Lady A for over 20 years and had released multiple albums under that name. In an Instagram post, the original Lady A expressed her displeasure at having her name taken over by the all-white country music trio, saying, “How can you say Black Lives Matter and put your knee on the neck of another Black artist? I’m

not mad. I am, however, not giving up my name, my brand I worked hard for.” Many people praised Lady A for standing up for herself. Grammar Nazis criticized Lady A for ending a sentence with a preposition.

7. About the same time the two Lady As were getting it figured out, The Chicks released a new album. Gaslighter was the first album under the new name for The Chicks, previously known as The Dixie Chicks, who removed the word “Dixie” from their name a few years ago to distance themselves from the Confederate-era South. So far, no one has come forward to say they have been performing under the name The Chicks, though there was that song Ray Stevens did with those chickens doing Glen Miller’s “In the Mood.” Chickens doing Glen Miller. Now there’s some funny stuff! Almost as funny as that battery-operated bass hanging on your wall that sings “Take Me to the River.” You ought to think about getting some new batteries for it.

3 – Gotta keep em’ separated

An attempt by the author to start organizing ubiquitous amounts of outdoor gear.

A

t least three times a week, I look around my house, my office, my shop, and mutter to myself, “I have too many hobbies.” And it’s an honest assessment. If we include just my outdoor hobbies and neglect things like woodworking and listening to bluegrass music, it includes whitewater kayaking, flatwater kayaking, flatwater canoeing, fly fishing, bow hunting, rifle hunting, skeet shooting, disc golf, rock climbing, hiking, trail running, camping, backpacking, outdoor photography of all kinds, and finally, relaxing in a hammock. The absolute worst thing about loving all these activities is it’s physically impossible for me to do them all as much as I would like; the second worst thing is having to store and organize this veritable mountain of gear that has less overlap than you might think. For the past several months, I’ve been attempting to turn my mess of a gear closet into something that looks like MTV Cribs: Jackson Hole and here are the lessons I’ve learned.

1 – Large bins are my greatest enemy

When confronted with a pile of stuff that you must store away, by far the easiest solution is to find a large enough Rubbermaid that can squeeze everything inside and roll it under the bed so nobody will see it. Out of sight out of mind may help you ignore it, but when it comes PAGE 28

time for you to need, say, that headlamp for that last-minute late afternoon hike?

You’ll spend the last remaining daylight digging through a tangle of stuff sacks and cam straps before finding it. So, my first rule is that the size of the container must match the size of the item somewhat; for sleeping bags, I don’t mind putting them in larger containers; my collection of half a dozen sleeping bags are currently stored in a cedar chest the size of a pirate’s war chest. My headlamp though, is now stored in a 5-gallon container, along with my battery powered lantern, matches, storm candles, etc.

One of the things about good gear, is it makes you happy to use it. A pack that carries weight well makes you happy to carry it. Clothing and shoes do much the same thing; a good pair of boots just feel good to lace tightly and wear around all day. But, too much of a good thing can make your prized hiking boots suddenly not hold up as well as expected when you’re on the trail. For a long time, I’ve had a bad habit of wearing boots every day and suddenly wondering why they were hurting my feet when I’d go hiking.

So now, my hiking boots have a strict dirt-only policy which is lengthening their life much more than wearing them on concrete. Some of my hiking pants and shirts are dedicated to outdoor only pursuits only as well; there’s a few sets that I’ll wear around, but some of the more specialized and lightweight pieces I have right beside my tent as adventure only pieces.

4 – Simplify, Simplify

The most obvious step is by far the hardest; you saw my list of hobbies and see how many things I like to do. What I have to do now is start whittling down what I do and consolidate gear into as little as possible that let’s me do the most that I can. For example, flat water kayaking has been something I’ve always

loved doing…but I have a kid now, and a wife who’s always been a little leery of paddling on her own. The flatwater kayak may be heading out to pasture soon.

Previously, I had a 6-man tent, a 3-man medium weight tent, and a 2-man tent that was always a little too small inside and a little too heavy for what it was. So, the 2-man tent has been sold, further removing my need to store an item that won’t be used anytime soon. I’ve walked away from rock climbing entirely, until some time in the future when I decide its finally time to return to my roots.

5 – Don’t worry about the gear unless you’re using it

There are people, me included, who get more obsessed about getting the “right” gear, than they are about actually using it. They’ll obsess about the best ways to display their gear, to organize their gear, rather than make plans about when and where they use it to…. oh……darn. 2 – Gear is beautiful, let it be seen

This may only appeal to me, but my gear-geek tendencies have finally broken through. Instead of hiding away gear in a closet along with suits I never wear, I’m dedicating a wall for a slat wall system that I picked up on Marketplace for $10.

If you’re unfamiliar with what a slat wall system is, think of it as a slightly more attractive version of pegboard; you can use hooks, and baskets, and shelves, similar to what you’ve seen on retail displays at stores. And just like how a store can make items pop out and look amazing, arrange your gear the same way so at a glance you can look across the entire wall and see what all you have. I thought about dedicating a wall in our office/spare bedroom to this, but my wife has instead asked I

Pandemic disruptions affect our pets’ behavior

T

his pandemic has affected our entire world, including our pets. Many of us are heading back to work and school and leaving our dogs at home alone again. Some of us are starting to have guests back in our homes. The world is constantly changing and if there is anyone that recognizes it more, it’s animals.

Several families have rescued, fostered or purchased puppies/dogs before or during the pandemic. I have numerous clients contacting me that their dogs have become more protective when guests come over, or they bark or growl more now. Maybe they whine or become disruptive as you’re trying to leave the house for work or school.

Regardless of the behavior, your dog is telling you something.

Tip number one: stay calm. Always stay calm. Your dog feeds off your energy.

If you know you are having company over, exercise your dog mentally and physically before your guests arrive. Mental stimulation is just as important as physical stimulation, which I wrote about a few articles back (October 2020 issue). Many owners are surprised with the amount of energy their dogs have. When dogs have too much built up energy, they can display it in a number of unhealthy ways. Always remember a tired dog is a good dog, and a good dog is a happy dog. Which makes for a very satisfied owner.

Tip number two: never discipline a dog who growls. Why? Because that growl is a warning and a clear indication that the dog is uncomfortable. He is telling you so. If you discipline a dog for growling, he won’t give you a warning growl next time and he will go straight for the bite. If your dog growls at your guests, he is telling you he is uncomfortable and you need to react immediately. Remove your dog from the situation, give him some space and respect the fact that he is uncomfortable. Set your dog up to succeed and remove the stressors that trigger him.

Tip number three: set up a room or a cozy section of your home that he can go to when he is overstimulated. Turn on some music for your dog to drown out the noise if you have guests over. It has been proven that reggae, classic rock and classical music help calm dogs. Just remember to change the station every week to mix it up for them so your dog doesn’t become used

depositphotos.com to it and in turn, be less effective. One of my dogs gets overwhelmed when we have guests over, she mentally cannot handle it and I don’t ask her to. I respect that. Anytime we have company come over, she goes in our bedroom and I set her up with music and a special treat she receives when company comes. This way she doesn’t associate company coming over to her being put in our bedroom. She associates company now with a special treat and a comfortable, safe place for her to relax and be stress free.

Tip number four: have special treats ready at any time. Sometimes we have guests over that are unexpected. It’s always a good idea to have a special treat your dog loves ready for those uncertain times. I have stuffed Kong’s filled with healthy snacks for my dogs and I keep them in my freezer. They are often filled with plain cooked oatmeal, sweet potatoes, honey, bananas and applesauce (there is a full list

on my website of dog friendly appropriate foods). Frozen stuffed Kongs are wonderful for stressful environments, including a trip to the Vet or car rides.

Tip number five: if you are heading back into the office or even if you are working from home, doggy daycare is a fabulous option for your four-legged friends. This way your dog socializes with other dogs and humans and what an unbelievable difference that makes. Your dog will come home from a day of playing with friends and may sleep for days. If daycare isn’t an option, consider a dog walker that comes by to walk your dog while you are gone.

Tip number six: take it slow and be patient. Our dogs have gotten used to us being home with them and it may take them some time to adjust. Start building up your dogs independence again by slowly getting out of the house for short periods of time so it’s not such a shock

to their system. Pick up your keys like you’re about to leave several times a day, but don’t leave. Open your garage door a few times, leave, and go for a short walk without your dog. Get them used to those sounds again. Get them used to you walking out the door again and returning. Reward your dog for laying down and being calm, we often have a tendency to ignore our pets for their neutral behavior. It only makes sense to reward the behavior we want, right? That’s what we do for ourselves, our children and loved ones, try doing it for your dog. When all four paws are on the ground, acknowledge your dog and calmly say “yes” to him and you will be off to a great start. The importance of stretching

I

am teaching chronic disease management classes (i.e. diabetes and hypertension) that both include an entire chapter devoted to physical activity as a part of disease management.

We usually think of cardiovascular-related activities that increase heart rate when we talk about activity. The generally accepted guidelines for adults are to get at least 150 minutes of moderate activity per week with no more than two days with no activity. An easy way to think of moderate activity is you can talk while you engage in it, but not sing (obviously it is too easy).

The general reason is to increase the heart rate, thus increasing cardiovascular strength and lung capacity. Many Americans fall far short of physical activity recommendations due to sedentary lifestyles. I wrote a previous article dis-

cussing the U.S. Surgeon General’s updated guidelines, including the need for (at minimum) moderate activity.

My objective relates to, I believe, most people do not regularly stretch — and if they do stretch, not much and not deeply enough. When not stretched regularly, muscles become tight and tense making everyday life activities difficult, let alone exercise.

I often relate my own experiences with those people I teach. This helps reach people as I think of is an “eye-to-eye” approach. We are all human and have life experiences that we can share and of which we can learn. I want to share a little of my story that may help my point.

I have always been active. Aside from loving outdoors — running, tag, biking, swimming, etc., I danced from childhood through college; participated in school gymnastics for many years; started working in the fitness industry at age 17 teaching aerobics classes and training members on workouts; and weight trained, run, etc.

With sports and activities often come injuries. I injured the same knee twice while doing gymnastics and have shoulder joint deterioration from “over” weight-training. When I was 29, I was t-boned by a speeding car, rolling my car.

I continued my activities, however, over time these old injuries haunted me.

About 10 years ago, I noticed not a day went by that my neck, shoulders and back were not tight and gnarly. I could hardly turn my head in the morning.

I went about my day as always but increasingly wondered how things would look 20 years down the road if I continued like this. I had seen a couple of chiropractors and massage therapists, but I never overcame the tightness.

Meanwhile, I took what I call a “sabbatical” from weight training. I was pretty active but it was more outdoor yard work and walking – which by the way, is great for the body. The tension in my joints, especially my neck and shoulders got progressively worse. Keep in mind, I was not doing much in the way of flexibility exercises or stretching — and really had not since I was in college dance theater.

I decided to get back to the gym about two years ago, and I was surprised at how

Depositphotos.com difficult it was to do exercises that I had been able to do fairly easily. Not only was my upper back, neck and shoulder area tight and tense, but I had tension and inflammation in my wrists, feet and elbows. While strong muscles are needed to do the exercises (for example, we use our chest muscles in executing a bench press), tense muscles and inflamed joints will likely limit our ability to even do the exercise at all.

I embarked on regular, consistent flexibility and stretching exercises. I almost emphasize these more than walking and strength training because if I do not stretch, it limits my abilities in other areas of fitness. I have set flexibility goals

for myself which gives me a focus. It has made remarkable changes in my joints and muscles.

I strongly recommend daily flexibility exercises. These will help protect your body from injury and help you continue doing even the most routine activities.

Resorptive Lesions: Resorptive lesions are erosions in the enamel that are like cavities in humans. These lesions are not caused by decay from eating too many sweets but are the result of an over-reactive immune system. Some animals, especially cats, are very sensitive to the plaque that can accumulate on their teeth. Their body sees this material as “foreign” and attack the tooth’s enamel, resulting in a painful mouth, infections, and fractured teeth. Daily tooth brushing can help to remove plaque from the teeth, but regular professional dental cleanings are best for pets who are prone to resorptive lesions.

The only treatment for resorptive lesions is extraction of the affected tooth.

Oral Tumors and Growths: Oral growths can arise from a variety of benign or cancerous conditions. Certain breeds like Boxers are prone to lesions known as gingival hyperplasia. This non-cancerous growth of the gingival tissue can completely cover the teeth, making it difficult

February is National Pet Dental Awareness Month, so this is a great time to consider scheduling the oral examination and preliminary testing needed to see if your pet is a good candidate for a dental procedure. Depending on the severity of your pet’s dental disease and treatment needed, the procedure could range anywhere from a few hundred dollars to over a thousand dollars. Talk to your veterinarian to see if any discounts or specials are offered during Dental Month.

oes your pet have bad breath?

Dental disease is often overlooked and can threaten the comfort and health of your pet. Because pets may not show that their mouth is in pain, a comprehensive oral examination is the only way to ensure the detection of gingivitis, broken teeth, and tooth abscesses. In the past, dental disease was not often discussed at routine veterinary visits. We now know that infected, painful teeth can impact your pet’s overall quality of life and can even lead to infections in other areas of the body. Depending on the age of your pet, an oral examination should be performed once to twice yearly. During the oral examination, your veterinarian will check for broken teeth, signs of periodontal disease, resorptive lesions, and growths within the mouth.

Broken teeth: Dogs and cats chew on things that can damage their teeth, resulting in painful tooth fractures or worn teeth. Hard chew toys, bones, sticks, or rocks are common causes of broken teeth.

If the fracture of the tooth involves the vital pulp, then the tooth will be painful, and an abscess (infection) can develop. In these cases, the tooth may require extraction or endodontic therapy. Your veterinarian can take x-rays of the tooth to determine the severity of the injury. Many general veterinary practitioners can perform tooth extractions; however, root canals and other endodontic procedures are typically only available at dental specialty facilities.

Periodontal disease: Periodontal disease is one of the most common conditions affecting our pets. Just think of what

for your pet to chew. Your veterinarian can remove the tissue and regular tooth brushing and dental care will help to prevent recurrence. Other oral growths can be aggressive tumors that may spread to other areas of the body. Any growths detected within the mouth should be evaluated and surgically removed by your veterinarian -sooner rather than later.

After performing the oral exam, your veterinarian may recommend a dental cleaning to address some of the issues discussed above. Dentistry in pets is very similar to dentistry in humans – we use the same dental x-ray equipment and instruments to clean and polish the teeth. As you might imagine, even the most compliant pet will not tolerate this type of procedure, so anesthesia is required. Your veterinarian will perform a thorough examination and laboratory testing prior to the dental procedure to make sure that your pet is in good overall health. If your pet has any underlying conditions like heart disease or diabetes, then additional testing or treatment may be needed before considering a dental procedure.

Periodontal disease is an infection that affects the structures surrounding teeth, including the gums, periodontal ligament, and surrounding bone. This condition can cause painful, bleeding gums, loose teeth, tooth root abscesses, and in some cases, even fractures of the jaw. The best way to prevent periodontal disease is with daily tooth brushing and regular professional dental cleanings. Tooth brushing in dogs and cats is easier than it sounds. Introduce the toothbrush slowly and be sure to use a pet toothpaste that comes in “yummy” flavors that are not harmful if swallowed. If your pet has severe periodontal disease, they most likely will not allow you to brush their teeth until the oral pain is addressed.

York County offers a new place to play

H

appy 2021 to our YC Magazine readers! May it be a happy and healthy year as we all hope the end is in sight soon for COVID-19.

Of course, one way to stay healthy is to be active outdoors - whatever that looks like for you. And we now have a new place to do that in York County! It’s Field Day Park in Lake Wylie, and I’ve asked Jason Ratterree, parks superintendent, to give us an introduction to the new park. So, take it away, Jason ...

Field Day Park at Lake Wylie

Field Day Park at Lake Wylie is a 50acre, $13.5 million dollar recreation complex located in the Paddlers Cove subdivision. The park, located at 1101 Field Day Lane, Clover, SC, is owned and operated by the York County Government. The park’s amenities provide numerous opportuni-

ties for individuals and families, as well as team sports.

The idea behind this park is to appeal a little bit to everyone. Baseball/Softball fields and multipurpose fields provide numerous opportunities for Youth and Adult Sports along with opportunities for parents and children just to come out to a field to play. Children of all ages will be able to enjoy the fenced in, modern playground with seating for parents.

Pickleball, which is dubbed “Americas Fastest Growing sport,” is a fantastic addition to this park. From youth all the way to seniors, people can enjoy this fun, fast paced paddle and ball game. The Park will have two shelters that may be used for any type of outdoor event for your friends and family.

Last but not least, the Community Center is a beautiful 2,800 sq. ft. building that includes offices, kitchen/concession stand, bathrooms and a 50-person capacity indoor venue with more capabilities spilling out onto the back covered patio area with plenty of picnic table seating.

The park was originally a concept of many back in the early 2000’s. The citizens of the Lake Wylie area saw a need for a place for their kids to play youth sports.

With help from current and former county councils over the years, the county was able to acquire land in the Paddlers Cove Subdivision in 2010.

In 2016, there was an item on the ballot to vote for a Special Recreation Tax. The citizens of Lake Wylie voted to approve this tax to help fund the park along with some Hospitality Tax money. The groundbreaking began in October 2018 with construction finishing in October 2020.

There are so many people who helped with this park in the early stages -- pushing for it to get accomplished. With the support from the community and county council/management, we are now able to offer this unique park to the citizens of York county.

Field Day Park offers unique experiences for all ages whether it be sports on the athletic fields, a playground for kids or simply walking trails for whoever may want to use them. Anyone of any age may enjoy this park in some aspect.

Opening day was Oct. 31 at 9 a.m. It was a chilly but sunny day that brought a good turnout including vendors and sponsors on site. We were also able to host a small Halloween trick or treat event for kids that afternoon after the grand opening. Since opening, this park has been very busy -whether it be at the playgrounds or pickleball courts.

For those who don’t know, our pickleball courts are the first of their kind in York County and pickleball itself is a great sport that is quickly growing in York County.

You may come for open play or reserve a court for a one-hour time slot on our website (yorkcountygov.com/fdplw). We are also offering free beginner clinics. They are a bit sporadic, but please check our calendar on the website for upcoming clinics and events.

We also offer two covered outdoor pavilions with picnic tables for rent for various activities, and the indoor Community Center can also be rented for small events (50-person capacity). Here’s the run-down of important things to know:

Planning for unexpected future care needs

I

t is that time of year when many people will begin making lists of resolutions. This year include planning for the unexpected in your list of good intentions. Who would speak or make decisions for you, if you were too sick or unable to tell your doctor or loved ones about your treatment wishes? Special forms called advance directives allow you to create your own self-determined care plan that communicates your wishes and preferences if you become seriously ill.

Planning for future care needs is a key part of retirement.

Costs of long-term care: Someone turning age 65 6oday has about a 70% percent chance of needing some type of long-term care during their lifetime. The average length of time people need long term care services is 3 years. In South Carolina, the average cost for long term

care is $273,750 ($19,250 per year) at 2019 rates. Medicare is the federal health insurance program for those over 65 and some younger people with disabilities.

And Medicare does not pay for custodial care which makes up more than 90% of all long-term care services.

An example of custodial care is when someone needs help with walking, bathing, eating, dressing, or using the toilet.

Custodial care is what people need most when they have a physical impairment from a stroke. Or, due to cognitive impairment from dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. Do not make the mistake of thinking Medicare covers long term care costs. It does not.

depositphotos.com advance the medical treatment you will want to receive if an illness or disability prevents you from making your own decisions. These advance directives allow you to name a person whom you want to make health care decisions for you when you are unable to do so. State-specific forms and instructions may be downloaded free of charge by calling Partnership for Caring at 1-800-989-9455 or by visiting www.partnershipforcaring.org/.

When selecting a health care agent, it is important to choose someone who will make the health care choices that you would make for yourself, even if those are not the choices that he or she would make in the same situation. Every competent adult should name someone as his or her health care agent. By choosing your Health-Care Proxy while you are healthy, your loved ones avoid having to deal with these potentially difficult decisions when a crisis is at hand. It is important to communicate your wishes openly with your health care provider, clergy, family members and loved ones.

A Living Will is not the same as a Durable Medicare Power of Attorney. Your Durable Power of Attorney allows you to appoint a person to make medical deci-

sions for you, in necessary. A Living Will is more limited in nature. It clarifies issues related to the use of life support systems you wish to receive when you are facing death.

Once you have completed a Durable Medical Power of Attorney, give copies to your doctor, clergy, agent and loved ones. Bring a copy with you if you are hospitalized. Keep the original in a safe place but accessible by your health care proxy in case of an emergency. Tell your proxy where the original is located. Do not leave your advanced directives in a safe deposit box where they will be found too late to do any good.
