s we all hunker down during this COVID-19 pandemic, I urge people to stay calm, read reliable information from credible sources, practice good hygiene and social distancing, take care of yourself and your family, eat healthy and exercise, spread kindness, and get creative. Oh, and find things to laugh about. Laughter will definitely help diffuse tension from the additional stresses we all find ourselves facing.

With schools closed, events canceled, and many offices ramping up remote working capabilities, we are presented with the challenges of filling our days productively, on our own, while mixing in some playtime so that we can continue for who knows how long. Isolation can be good in doses. But, thank goodness for the internet and virtual con-

exploring our inner selves and learning more about our own back yard, both today and throughout history.

Stories and tales have been passed from one person to another since human vocal cords and languages were developed, long before letters and other types of characters were ever imprinted on paper. Tales to inform and warn, tales to teach moral lessons, and tales to inspire have flowed through every culture. In part to extend the lives of the next generation and to help guide those lives in a positive manner by learning from others’ mistakes, the most memorable tales are ones told by a master of method.

A storyteller, one who can draw you in with a whisper and keep you in suspense with a pause is a truly an artistic weaver of air.Words are their colorful yarns, vol-

ume is their tapestry needle, cadence is their loom, and the story is the finished fabric of all of those pieces.

I remember riding in the car with my two sisters and my dad, going to elementary school. Some of my favorite memories are creating stories during the drive.

Dad would start a story and then pass it to one of us to add to it, and on and on.

Sometimes they were silly, sometimes great cliffhangers, but they were always filled with twists and turns that you couldn’t have anticipated and couldn’t control. The ebb and flow of our stories was part of that special experience.

Control your corner of the world during this COVID-19 pandemic for safety and well-being, but be open and encourage the ebb and flow of positivity and human kindness in your own creative ways. yc

laration of Independence. Freed and enslaved African Americans fought for our country long before it was a country. An African American man named Crispus Attucks is considered by many historians to be the first person killed in the Boston Massacre on March 5, 1770. An enslaved African American man named Prince Estabrook was wounded in the first British volley at the Battle of Lexington on April 19, 1775. In honor of the African American Patriots who risked their lives for the cause of liberty, let us look at some lesser-known enslaved heroes of the Revolution.

in Portsmouth, Virginia where he served as a waiter. Cornwallis was the commander of the southern British forces during the second Southern Campaign of the Revolution. Lafayette quickly gained Cornwallis’ trust, so much so that Cornwallis sent him back to the Patriots as a spy for the British. He continued sending intelligence to the Marquis on a near-daily basis while simultaneously feeding the British misinformation. After the war, the Marquis de Lafayette wrote a certificate praising Lafayette for the valuable service he had done for the American cause. James Lafayette, in turn, sent the certificate to the Virginia Assembly and asked that he be declared a free man in return for his service. In October of 1786, the Virginia Assembly acquiesced, and James Lafayette was declared a free man. After his emancipation, James took the surname Lafayette. When the Marquis de Lafayette visited Richmond in 1824, he greeted Lafayette as an old friend.

In 1824, Lafayette sat for a portrait by the well-known artist James B. Martin. The portrait hangs in the Valentine Museum in Richmond. An unknown engraver created an engraving of James Lafayette based on Martin’s portrait.

Oscar Marion

Much is known about the life and exploits of Revolutionary War partisan band leader Brig. Gen. Francis Marion.

He is known as the “father of modern guerrilla warfare” due to his hit and run tactics that bedeviled the British during the American war for independence.

However, little is known about Francis Marion’s enslaved servant named Oscar. Oscar Marion served as Francis Marion’s servant before, during, and after the American Revolution. His primary task was to assist Gen. Marion’s mess sergeant in preparing meals. Oscar Marion is depicted in a painting entitled “General Marion Inviting a British Officer to Share His Meal,” doing just that.

It was painted between 1815 and 1825 by South Carolina artist John Blake White.

It depicts General Marion talking to a British officer while Oscar Marion can be seen kneeling behind a small table, cooking sweet potatoes on the fire. The original painting hangs in a third-floor corridor of the Senate wing of the nation’s Capital. On Dec. 15, 2006, Oscar Marion was recognized in a proclamation signed by President George W.

James Lafayette (formerly Armistead)

James Lafayette was born in Virginia in 1760. His master, William Armistead, was a farmer who lived near the town of Williamsburg. In Mid-March of 1780, Lafayette received permission from his master to volunteer to serve as a spy for the Marquis de Lafayette. The Marquis de Lafayette was a French aristocrat and military officer who assisted Patriot forces during the American Revolution. He commanded troops in several battles, including the Siege of Yorktown. The Marquis sent Lafayette to spy on the infamous turncoat, Benedict Arnold. There, he served as a guide and a servant to Arnold and his officers, all the while sending intelligence to The Marquis de Lafayette. When Benedict Arnold left Virginia for the North, Lafayette was sent to Lord Charles Cornwallis’ headquarters

Bush. The President expressed the thanks of a “grateful nation” and recognized Marion’s “devoted and selfless consecration to the service of our country in the Armed Forces of the United States.”

Watt

It is evident that Brattonsville’s namesake, Col. William Bratton, owned at least a few enslaved people at the time of the American Revolution, the most famous of whom was Watt.

On the afternoon of July 11, 1780, a detachment of approximately 120 loyalists under the command of Capt. Christian Huck arrived at the Bratton plantation looking for Col. William Bratton, who was approximately 20 miles away with Brig. Gen. Thomas Sumter’s partisan brigade at the

Catawba River. Family tradition indicates that Col. Bratton’s wife, Martha, sent Watt with a message to her husband informing him of Huck’s presence in the area.

An article in the Charlotte Observer dated Sept. 28, 1930 recounts the story: “While the British were still at the Bratton house, Mrs. Bratton resorted to a stratagem to send word to her husband of the enemy’s presence. Ostensibly sending a faithful slave named Watt for the cows,

she dispatched him to meet Colonel Bratton and apprize him of the developments at his home.” Samuel Mendenhall also recounts the story of Watt in his 1989 book, entitled Tales of York County. Mendenhall states that Watt took it upon himself to find his master: “quietly, without arousing the suspicions of the British, he stealthily moved away from the troops, found a horse and when at a safe distance, mounted it and rode as fast as he could

to Colonel Bratton’s camp on the Catawba River…” Regardless, it is evident that the Brattons held Watt in high regard, as evidenced by the tombstone which was erected for Watt and his wife, Polly, after their deaths in 1837 and 1838, respectively.

The tombstone reads: “Sacred to the memory of Watt, who died December, 1837. During the American Revolutionary War he served his master, Col. William Bratton, faithfully, and his children with the same fidelity until his death. Also Polly his wife who died July 1838 who served the same family with equal faithfulness.”

With Black History Month and the 250th anniversary of the death of Crispus Attucks now behind us, let us not forget the countless freed and enslaved African American Patriots who risked their lives for American independence; an independence that would continue to be denied to them for another 73 years. yc Zach Lemhouse is the resident historian for the Culture and Heritage Museums of York County and the Director of the Southern Revolutionary War Institute. What is a gossip bench, anyway?

A

ntique and vintage furniture pieces are wonderful additions for any home. Even the most modern of decors can benefit by having an older piece placed here or there. One such interesting vintage piece is the gossip bench.

This quirky piece of furniture is part chair, part table, and part storage, all in one.

You may know gossip benches by another name, such as telephone benches, as they were called in northern and western parts of the country. Let’s look back into the history of the gossip bench, as it’s known in the south.

As hard as it is for younger people to believe, there was once a time when telephones were not portable because they were mounted to the wall. For today’s history lesson, we must think back to when the telephone was first invented.

We are going back in time over 140 years, back to Alexander Graham Bell and the year 1876. Bell was trying to improve the use of the telegraph system, which was invented 30 years earlier. Through his experiments, Bell discovered a person’s voice could be transmitted back and forth over wire-based electrical lines. A fun fact here is that Mark Twain was one

of the first people to have a phone in his home. Another cute side note in history was Heinz Ketchup was invented in the same year as the telephone.

Moving forward a little in time, the telephone was growing in popularity and in 1910, there were over 6,000 women working as telephone operators in New York.

By 1915, more than 11 million telephones were in existence in homes and businesses just in the United States alone. When Alexander Graham Bell died in 1922, all telephones were stopped and kept from ringing for one full minute in tribute to the creator.

By the early 1930s, despite the Great Depression, the telephone’s popularity kept increasing. By the latter part of that same century, a telephone could be found in just about every home in the United States. This same period in history was also the era during which men went to work and women stayed home to keep the house. Having a telephone in the home meant the lady of the house could stay in touch with her friends and distant family members more easily than ever before.

A mid-century metal gossip bench. and anything about their community and their neighbors, hence the introduction of the term, “gossip.”

Advances in technology brought the telephone off the wall and onto a small table via a cord. Being able to move to a more convenient place also brought on a different need. The small tables initially being used for telephones proved to be not large enough for the purpose. The lady of the home needed more space to be able to sit and have a conversation, to take messages, and to have the ability to look up a number in the telephone directory. At night, the area needed to be large enough for a lamp for additional light. Opportunistic craftsman took note of the need and the gossip bench was born!

No one knows exactly who invented the gossip bench. All that is known is the pieces were introduced to homes in the late 1920’s. They were extremely popular between the 1930s through the 1960s. Their popularity began to wane in the 1970s with the invention of cordless house telephones. This invention meant people could move around freely about while talking on the phone.

As far as design styling goes, the gossip bench runs from one extreme to the other.

Just like the gossip bench being called by different names, different regions of the world produced their own unique styles of the gossip bench. For instance, the New England area of the United States made benches in the Hepplewhite style while Pennsylvania pieces were more Shaker inspired. The British made their gossip benches more ornate reflecting the Victorian age. French gossip benches were produced in the styling of Louis the XIII. Scandinavian countries produced more sleek gossip bench styles reminiscent of space age mid-Century Modern designs.

No matter the styling of the gossip bench, they all were made for the sole purpose of being able to sit and “gossip” in comfort. In order to be called a gossip bench, the piece had to combine three key elements, a place to sit, a tabletop, and storage. Let’s talk about each element separately.

The first element of the gossip bench is a place to sit. Simple benches had a basic seating area made using a hard board covered with fabric. Think of your typical dining room chairs. More expensive benches called for more elaborate seating. These

bench seating areas would be covered in fine fabrics with upholstered backs and seats. Think luxurious, plush sofas with overstuffed tufted backs. You can find gossip bench seats covered in a wide variety of materials including needlepoint, leather, vinyl, and fabrics in solids, prints or stripes to name just a few.

The second element of the gossip bench is a tabletop. Simple bench tops were just large enough to hold the telephone with a small area for taking telephone messages.

More expensive benches had table tops large enough to hold the phone, an area for taking messages and space to hold a lamp for additional lighting.

The third element of the gossip bench is some type of storage area. Simple benches would have a shelf installed under the table to hold the telephone directory, notepads, and whatnot. More expensive benches would have a drawer added under the table portion in order to conceal the contents and giving the gossip bench a more streamlined look.

In thinking back on the era of the wired phone sitting atop the gossip bench, what a nice ritual talking on a corded telephone must have been. Just imagine setting aside a certain amount of time, to actually sit in one spot, and have a conversation with someone you know and love.

March Madness: An update

“H

ey Doc, can you believe that they’ve cancelled the NCAA men’s basketball championship? Cancelled! Done! Nada! What are we going to do about March Madness?”

Hmm…If you could spend a little time with me in the clinic, you’d see some real March Madness - up close and personal.

“Dr. Lesslie, I’ve heard that the corona virus is ten times more deadly than the regular flu. Maybe worse. Where should we hide?”

No need to hide—not yet, anyway.

Probably never. At this point, we just don’t know how deadly this virus will prove to be because we don’t have enough information. What information we do have suggests that there are probably a lot of people infected, but currently not an overwhelming number of deaths. That’s good news. But let’s consider this “deadly” business and how this is defined.

We’re talking here about the “mortality rate.” This is a simple mathematical equation (I should have consulted my older daughter, Lori, our family math guru.) and it looks like this: Number of deaths due to a specific disease / the number of cases of that disease = death rate.

An example would be 10 deaths due to X / 1,000 cases of X gives us a death rate of 1%.

Here are some examples of the death or mortality rates of some important and familiar diseases: • Rabies (untreated) - > 99% • Small pox (the most virulent strain) – 95% • Ebola virus – 83-90% • Chickenpox in newborns – 30% • Anorexia nervosa – 16% • Whooping cough – 3.7% • Coronavirus (very early estimation) – 3.48% • Influenza A - < 1% The rate for the coronavirus is a very rough estimate. Remember the equation. We have a pretty good idea about the number of deaths due to this infection (still very small) but we have no idea how many people out there have been or currently are infected. We know it’s much more than those who have tested positive, since just like with the flu, many people with mild symptoms don’t seek medical care and never end up being counted. The estimate for Influenza A takes that into account, and inflates the denominator (the number of cases).

A best guess. As time passes, we’ll get a better handle on these numbers for the coronavirus and an idea of just how

“Hey, I don’t have any symptoms, but I want to be tested. Just for my peace of mind—and my wife’s.”

Well, let’s consider who should be tested. But before we do that, let’s think about why someone should be tested. I’m writing this on March 15, 2020, and as of two days ago, the president and his health team announced that widespread testing would be available starting sometime next week. That sounds well and good, but I foresee a boondoggle. If the testing is free, and the criteria to be tested are subjective (a low threshold for testing), why not get it done? If you have no symptoms or very minimal symptoms and the test is negative, then what? Get tested again in a week? Ten days? Or if you have minimal symptoms and test positive, are you going to be willing to self-quarantine for two weeks? Remember, there’s no treatment for this infection, in contrast to the flu. Regarding the self-quarantine, all of us should be practicing that now, with no encouragement from the government. Mild cough, congestion, a few aches—we need to keep our distance from other people. A recently coined term is “social separation.”

Sounds kinder, gentler. But the concept

is a good one.

Now for the people for whom testing will be important. These are the folks with fever (above 100.4), congestion, cough, flu-like symptoms, and respiratory distress. But a drive-through testing at a CVS or Target is not appropriate for these individuals. They should be in an emergency department or another facility capable of handling emergencies. Next week, and the one following, are going to be interesting.

“So just how good is the test anyway?

I’m sure I had the flu a couple of months ago, but my test was negative. Is this going to be any better?”

That’s a good question, and we don’t know the answer. We do know that only about 2% of tests being performed turn out to be positive. That means that 98 out of 100 people tested have been negative. That indicates one or more things.

The test might not be very sensitive (missing cases that actually are present - a false negative test), we’re testing too many people (our criteria for testing is too broad and not objective enough), or the infection is easily confused with other diseases, such as the garden-variety flu, colds, even allergies. This is something else we will learn over the next weeks and months.

“Epoch” changes I: Global climate in flux Editor’s note: Due to numerous requests, we are re-running Dr. Fields’ column from January 2020. Hopefully, the coronavirus situation will resolve soon and people can go see for themselves this wonderful exhibit.

O

ver the last year, I presented a series of articles to precede the opening of a new exhibit at the Museum of York County. “Ice Age Carolina: Exploring Our Pleistocene Past” is scheduled to open in 2020 during the Museum’s 70th anniversary. In the 2019 monthly YC Magazine columns, I highlighted incredible creatures that once inhabited our region, some of which will be featured in the new exhibit. With the beginning of the New Year, I would like to start a new series that explores the changing Carolina environment in which

the Ice Age creatures lived. We will begin with a general discussion of climate – its complex causality and its profound effects on earth’s inhabitants.

Climate can be defined as the pattern of weather over a long period of time over a large geographic area. Within the span of a human life, climate does change a great deal. However, scientists have collected evidence of dynamic shifts in continental land masses, ocean currents, and even the position of the earth itself over millions of years – all of which profoundly affected the global climate.

As the continents drift across the globe, their position with respect to the equator and the poles determines patterns of temperature and precipitation. Because the average speed of “continental drift” is roughly less than the rate at which your fingernails grow, it is no wonder that hu-

mans see little or no major climatic shifts in their lifetimes. The sun’s rays hit the earth more directly at the equator, resulting in higher average temperatures.

Circulation of air over the equator causes warm, moist air to rise and dump its moisture to the north and south, the socalled “tropics.” The result is a hot, wet climate. Farther north, the sun’s rays strike the earth at a greater “oblique” angle with less intensity, resulting in lower average annual temperatures.

So, how exactly has all of this influenced global climate over time? Examinations of fossils, ocean floor mud cores, and samples of glacial ice have revealed an ever-changing climate, indeed. Obviously, time and space do not permit a full discussion of our climate over the last 600 million years, but there have been some interesting ex-

tremes that are worth mention.

During the Pleistocene “Ice Ages” climate fluctuated greatly. The Carolinas of the early Pleistocene (2.6 million years ago) resembled the savannas of Africa, with warm grasslands hosting a variety of large grazing animals (horses, pronghorn antelope, and elephant-like “gomphotheres”) and the predators (American cheetah, hunting hyena) that pursued them.

By the latter part of the middle Pleistocene (400,000 years ago) our region would have looked vaguely familiar, but with a more “tropical” vibe. Summers would have been hot and humid, but the forest inhabitants would have seemed more at home in South America!

Fast forward to the late Pleistocene (19,000 years ago) and the climate has shifted once again. Gigantic ice sheets cover Canada and the northern United States, and they are on the move. At their peak, the glaciers came as far south as Kentucky. Closer to home, forests occupied the landscape, but not with the broad-leaved trees that are so common today. Studies of fossil pollen revealed

that open evergreen woodlands with spruce, fir, and hemlock trees were prevalent in South Carolina. Basically as the ice sheets advanced, they “pushed” existing plant communities to the south. The modern evergreen forests that are prevalent in the northern United States and Canada were present in the Carolinas during the late Ice Ages. In this cold, dry conifer woodland, caribou and woodland muskox traveled in loose herds. Giant ground sloths pulled down tree limbs

to get at the leaves, while porcupines climbed out of reach to browse the higher branches. Dire wolves and American lions were a constant threat.

By the end of the Pleistocene some 11,700 years ago, climate shifted again to the more moderate conditions of the present day. This and other factors caused the extinction of most of the largest Ice Age beasts. The plants and smaller animal life that we see today are the survivors of that last great mass extinction.

10 small trees for the home landscape

T

rees that mature to a small size are a very useful addition to the landscape. Small trees can add a more human scale to entryways, or other areas that need a special accent. In addition,

many small trees may have showy flowers, an interesting growth habit, or attractive bark to add interest through the seasons.

If you have very large shade trees, these smaller trees help by transitioning the space back to the ground. These are also great for some of our newer, high-density neighborhoods where there is not enough space for larger growing trees.

There are many small trees to choose from, but I would like to highlight 10 trees which may be a little less known than the more common ones in which you are more familiar. Some of these are better for full sun locations, some grow best in light shade, and still others can be grown in either location; however, keep in mind than the tree canopies will be more open and airy in the shade and more compact in full sun.

The red buckeye, also known as horse chestnut, Aesculus pavia, is a native tree that naturally grows from the midlands to

It can be found growing to 30 feet in the wild but is more commonly in the 10 to 20-foot range. Its deciduous, compound leaves are large and glossy. It blooms in April and early May here in York County. The upright, red flower clusters occur at the ends of branches, and can be up to 12 inches long. The individual flowers are tube-shaped and are a favorite nectar source for hummingbirds. It is naturally found as an understory tree in deciduous forests and has a picturesque habit if grown in similar landscape conditions. In full sun, it becomes more compact and shrub-like.

These trees would grow best in a moist, but well-drained soil.

American yellowwood, Cladrastis kentukea, can grow to 50 feet in the wild, but matures closer to 30 feet in sunny landscape conditions. The broad-spreading canopy is carpeted with bright green leaves

in the spring and summer, and transition to a brilliant yellow fall color. The bark of the trunk and spreading branches is very smooth and attractive. Hanging clusters of white flowers are fragrant, appearing in May. This is a very handsome tree.

There are two dogwoods from Asia that are deserving of wider use. The Kousa dogwood, Cornus kousa, is similar in size and appearance to our native dogwood.

The major differences are that it has white flower bracts which are pointed, and do not open until after the leaves emerge, creating a green foil as a backdrop to the floral display. It is best grown in full sun to light shade. With age, the peeling bark becomes a patchwork of gray, brown and tan to add additional interest. The brilliant red fruit appear in late summer and add an additional ornamental quality.

The Cornelian cherry dogwood, Cornus mas, is the other dogwood of note. Instead

yc magazine... York County’s Entertainingly Informative Magazine of the showy, white bracts of our native and Kousa dogwoods, this tree has clusters of tiny yellow flowers which absolutely cover the tree in February or early March.

It is a small, dense tree with a rounded form and interesting exfoliating bark similar to a river birch. Flowers are followed by a bright red fruits which ripen in midsummer. These are edible and can be used for jams or preserves. It is native to southern Europe and western Asia.

There are several native species on Serviceberry, Amelanchier spp. that grow well here. All have clusters of white flowers followed by red fruits which are edible. The trunks are smooth and dark gray and often have a multi-trunked character. Trees grow in sun or shade but flower more profusely in full sun. Mature height is about 20 feet with an equal spread.

Many of you may be familiar with our native fringe tree, often called Grancy gray-beard or old man’s beard. There is a related tree, Chinese fringetree, Chionanthus retusus, that has more refined qualities. The major differences are that it has a spreading habit (looking somewhat like a miniature live oak), smaller, darker green leaves, and pure white flowers. It also flowers a little later in late April, after the leaves have emerged. This gives the flowers

a dark green background where they show off better. The tree grows 15 to 20 feet tall with a slightly greater spread. The flowers occur in clusters at the ends of branches, and the petals are long and strap-like.

This is quite a showy tree in bloom, and its branching characteristics provide interest throughout the year. Chinese fringetree is best grown in full sun. The cultivar ‘Tokyo Tower’ is a more upright form with a narrower canopy.

The Eastern redbud, Cercis canadensis is an attractive addition to the landscape.

Many culivars and hybrids have been selected in the last decade which provide different growth habits and foliage color. This tree grows best and will flower more heavily in full sun locations. The flowers are light lavender, and are in clusters all along the branches in March or early April. The mature height is normally in the range of 15 to 20 feet with an equal or greater spread.

Japanese Stewartia, Stewartia pseudocamellia, is another fine specimen with interest for all seasons. The trunk and branches have a beautiful smooth bark with a patchwork of varied colors. The foliage is glossy, dark green through the spring and summer turning to reds and purples in the fall. It bears large, white flowers, with yellow stamens in mid summer. It grows

Yellow wood tree in flower (left) and Persian Parrotia (right). best in full sun to light shade in rich, organic soils. It has an upright, pyramidal habit up to 20 feet, with a pleasing structure.

Stewartias in general are among the finest of small flowering trees.

Another native of Japan is the Japanese snowbell, Styrax japonicus. This is an excellent small tree for the landscape.

It has small glossy leaves held above distinctly horizontal branches. The white, bell-shaped, flowers hang by the thousands below the branches. The oblong, pearly flower buds open in early May and bloom for several weeks. Expect 15 to 25 feet at maturity. Grows in full sun to light shade. ‘Pink Chimes’ is a beautiful, pink-budded variety.

Last, but not least is the Persian Parrotia, Parrotia persica. This is an upright tree of 20 to 30 feet that is highly adaptable

and pest-free. The vase-shaped, branching character makes it suitable for smaller areas where pedestrian traffic is nearby. The trunk and branches have patches of gray, green and brown. It is in the witchhazel family, and has red-petaled flowers that are interesting, but not extremely showy in early March. The fall color is an excellent mix of reds, oranges and yellows. This is a great, trouble-free plant that grows best in full sun.

Whichever of these trees you pick for the landscape, you cannot go wrong. Our landscapes are too full of Bradford pears and the like, and we need to start using some different trees which have much more to offer in all the seasons. yc Paul Thompson is a Horticulture Agent with the Clemson Extension Service. Service A Helping Hand for the Community

Help stamp out hunger in York County

T

he 28th annual Letter Carriers Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive takes place on Saturday, May 9.

United Way of York County, SC partners with local post offices to connect with food banks that need help replenishing their shelves. In 2019, York County residents generously donated over 23,000 pounds of food!

The timing of the food drive is important because resources become low in the summer months. Traditionally, agencies see a drop in donations during this time of year when the demand for services goes up. All food donations stay in York County, so you can be sure you are helping our community.

The post office has made donating to this cause remarkably easy. To participate, simply place food items by your mailbox on May 9. Your letter carrier will then pick up the goods and deliver them to local food pantries. Pilgrims’ Inn, Project Hope, Dorothy Day Food Pantry, Love & Cherish, Fort Mill Care Center, P.A.T.H. Ministries, and Clover Area Assistance Center are just some of the agencies that will receive the donations.

Below are F.A.Q.s from the National Association of Letter Carriers’ website: When do I put out the food? On Sat-

urday, May 9, just set out your non-perishable food well before your letter carrier’s normal pickup time, the earlier the better.

Note that he or she will be delivering and collecting mail as usual, on top of collect-

ing food donations, so that pickup time could be slightly later than usual. A good rule of thumb is to have the bags by your mailbox by 9 a.m.

What do you mean by “non-perishable food?” The top requested non-perishable food items are: cereal, pasta, pasta sauce or spaghetti sauce, rice, canned fruits and vegetables, canned meals (such as soups, chili and pasta), 100% juice, peanut butter, macaroni & cheese, canned protein (tuna, chicken and turkey), beans (canned or dry).

Do I need to use a special bag? No! No special bags are needed. Paper is sturdy and tends to hold more food, while plastic holds up better if it gets wet.

Cloth bags or boxes are also fine. And most bags and boxes can be easily recycled. Your letter carrier will gladly take anything you leave out.

What if it’s raining/ snowing/random bad weather? You’ve heard of the Postal Service’s unofficial motto: Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds. So, of course your letter carrier will pick up and deliver your mail as usual on Food Drive Day, no matter what the weather may be. Note that plastic bags tend to hold up better in wet weather.

I put food out and it wasn’t picked up. Why not? Letter carriers try to touch every single mailbox during the Food Drive. If your donation is not picked up, contact your local post office or place your donation by your mailbox on Monday instead. (Letter carriers will be picking up missed donations on Monday, too.)

And of course, your local food banks and pantries will gratefully accept your donation in person.

How do I know whether my local letter carrier or post office is taking part in the Food Drive? Just call your local post office and ask to speak to your local food drive person.

Can I donate pet food, too? The Food Drive is primarily a people-food food drive, but if you also want to give pet food in addition to your regular donation, food banks may be able to distribute or direct it to pet shelters and organizations in the area that have a need.

Does my food donation stay local? Yes, all food stays in York County.

It’s not shipped off to some regional distribution center hundreds of miles away. If you want to know where your donation is going, call your local post office and ask to speak to your local food drive person.

Connections Helping Hands

Living in interesting times

I

’ve heard a million times, it’s an interesting time in our nation—a very interesting time. Not that I have to tell you that; you’re living it, just like the rest of us. Granted, I wonder where some folks’ common sense is, but that’s another article for another day, right?

Today, I want to talk about the good that can come from bad. No doubt about it, coronavirus equals bad. But even with all the fear, worry, quarantine, sickness, etc, there are so many good things that have come from a very bad situation.

One of the first things I noticed was how community people were immediately concerned for students, who, if school were out for several weeks wouldn’t have access to breakfast and lunch five days out of seven. York County individuals offered to cover food needs for families so no child went hungry. On the heels of this, restaurants across York County offered free children’s meals, seven days a week. So many small businesses, which you knew were being impacted by folks not eating out due to the social distancing rule, still, without hestiation, offered to give.

When the governor closed schools, we saw the school districts take action to ensure students would continue to have access to the meals they depended on getting at school. The action was pretty much immediate, a plan put into place quickly, reassuring families their children would still be taken care of during a very uncertain time.

Once it was announced schools were to close across the country, educational resource websites began offering access to their services for no charge. Zoos started live webcasts of their animals and included lessons to go along with the day’s theme. There were free online read-alongs, sing-alongs, educational TV shows and movies, podcasts, apps, arts and crafts classes, virtual museum visits, children’s concerts—it was amazing to see the quick response for children to continue to receive quality education during the down time. Even the internet providers got onboard by offering free internet access for the month so students could have access to online content.

At the same time, teachers began posting online they were avail-

able to assist with questions while schools were closed, which I’m sure many a parent sighed with relief. It really showed how blessed we are to have four outstanding school districts in York County, with teachers who are willing to go above and beyond for their students.

Outside of the helping hands with students, people across the community offered to do anything to help in the community, just give a call or send a message. A blanket offer of help. More important, a message of caring. One friend I know mailed her sanitizer to someone who had a person at home with medical issues and couldn’t find any. Blessing Boxes continued to be restocked with food so families in need wouldn’t find them empty. Offers of babysitting from neighbors because not everyone’s job closed down. Those who were out of work due to job closings were offering to help others who still had to report to work.

Plenty of people offered recipes for homemade breads and other basics, tips on making your own wet wipes and hand sanitizer, and thankfully, reported which stores still had toilet paper in stock! Others shared tips for cooking with canned or frozen foods and how to stretch a dollar. Even those millions of memes about the coronavirus allowed us to laugh during a dark time. It was interesting to see folks come together in a good way, as a loving community of people, schools, and businesses, to get through the toughest of days.

Could I also find the negative and write about all the bad? Sure. But I think it’s important to find the good where there is bad. And we do have good. We have many blessings in York County, and we have the choice every day to be one of them. Rock Hill’s Poet Laureate

A

ngelo Geter and I sat down to chat about what being Rock Hill’s Poet Laureate has looked like. I first was introduced to the Poet Laureate through the Poetry in Motion event that took place on Feb. 15. The York County Library, in conjunction with Angelo, created this incredible event where we all gathered at the Library’s My Ride stop to get on the bus together to hear Angelo share some of his poetry and spoken word. It was an incredible experience there were over 65 people at the event!

They even took a second ride around the Route No. 1 loop because so many enthu-

siastic audience members showed up babies to people in their 80s.

It was a historic moment for Rock Hill and a huge reflection of Black History Month and where our nation has come from (though we have a long way to go).

Angelo mentioned during the event that this was a moment to reflect on - that we all got to be on this free bus together riding around Rock Hill. It was wonderful to experience the city and the arts through public transportation. Angelo’s poetry deeply resonated with the crowd. He invited the audience to participate, to holler back, to make sounds and to reassure

him it was good writing. The event was the first of many that Angelo hopes to accomplish as Rock Hill’s Poet Laureate.

What is a Poet Laureate, you ask? According to Mirriam-Webster, one definition is, “one regarded by a country or region as its most eminent or representative poet.” Angelo earned his title in the Rock Hill ranks by applying and becoming the city’s second-ever Poet Laureate. Though Angelo applied the first time the position was announced, he made it as a finalist and to the interview stage but came in second to the incredible poet Amber Shockley.

Amber resigned after a few months in the position and Angelo was next in line. Instead of opening the application process again, they came directly to Angelo. He said, “had it happened for me at that time maybe things wouldn’t have worked out as well. Nothing but love for Amber and I still recognize her as the first Poet Laureate of the city.” Angelo is a South Carolina native and has been in Rock Hill since 2004. He graduated from Winthrop University and is currently working at DSU on campus.

He has always been writing. He was first a lyricist and a page poet. High school and college are where Angelo really started taking poetry seriously, he said.

“I fell in love with words and what words can do on a page and in performance,” he said. Inspired by the godfather of spoken word, Kirk Nugent, Ange-

lo wrote a piece “Standing Ovation” that was originally a rap but transformed into a spoken word poem. This was different from anything Angelo had done before.

A true turning point for his career. He began performing more and more on campus and competing. In 2006, Angelo opened for a touring spoken word artist, Sekou (the misfit) Andrews. This was a taste of what Angelo’s performance career could look like and a catapulting moment for him. A year later, he began participating in poetry slams. He had never heard of slam or done it before; his poems were too long but he tried. Fifteen people from all over the Southwest gathered to be a team with other colleges from around the nation. Angelo’s team placed fifth in the nation during that first-ever competition. The following year, he competed with the same team and they won! His slam career continued with Respect Da Mic and were semi-finalists nationally in 2012. In 2014, he created Slam Charlotte and in 2018 they won the national poetry competition and are currently the reigning champions. In the midst of all that, they participated in the adult regional competition called Southern Fried Poetry Slam. Angelo created teams as well as performed as an indie artist. He has pursued spoken word all over this area, and as far as St. Louis, in different competitions and slams.

Inspiration is everywhere and he is focusing on what he is supposed to write versus what he should write. He says he’s an overthinker, a Virgo. He is always writing and always thinking. He is jotting down a line here and there in voice notes or notes on his phone. “When the writing isn’t there, you just need to read.” Angelo is currently reading Jericho Brown, as well as Tim Seibles. Angelo is constantly inspired by his teammates on Slam Charlotte - Jay Ward and Breeze tied for the number one

best individual poet in the world. Both are on Angelo’s current Charlotte slam team.

Five of the team are currently ranked in the top 20 in the world.

He says that the Poet Laureate position is what brought him back to Rock Hill.

Angelo has big hopes and dreams for this position. He wants to bring a poetry festival to Rock Hill and he wants to create a Youth Poet Laureate position. He wants to guarantee that a 13 through 19-year-old voice would not only always be influencing fellow youth but also the city. Angelo really values hearing those youth voices and giving the youth of our city a chance to speak and tell their stories. Angelo is also hosting an open mic (Vibes & Verses) for all art forms on the last Thursday of each month at Island Bar and Grille.

countries and/or individuals are frantic both here and abroad, buying all types of material goods, foods, etc. to prepare for the virus to come into their area for several weeks or months.

“The root” of fear and anxiety are based in our primitive part of our brain (the Limbic system) – it’s the “fight, flight, and/or freeze” approach to conflicts (i.e., aversions, negative experiences, harm, danger, and etc.). It’s our reflexes or reactions in “surviving.” I use the everyday experience of unlocking a car door being relatively easy; however, add danger/ harm from someone/something and what was relatively simple, now becomes complex or difficult to do, inserting the key in the car door.

Fear and Anxiety are often ways we are unable to think or process because in some sense, you don’t have the time or the ability to think – you have to survive; hence, at times we often make ineffective or quick/ impulsive decisions. The COVID-19 has increased our level of fear and anxiety and is somewhat creating mass behaviors (i.e., hoarding toilet paper, raiding the grocery store, etc.). Remember, while there are precautions and/or dangers that are associated with COVID-19, the paper/food and basic needs are plentiful, unless individuals begin to collect due to fear/anxiety.

In the environment of fear and anxiety, what can we do? Often when individuals become uneasy with fear/anxiety, I might have them to complete the following, based on DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy), by Dr. Linehan):

STOP – learning how to handle distress/stress

• Stop: choose to make a choice on how you respond to the distress in both your emotions and your physical body… remain still (versus reacting) • Take: pause, removing yourself from the situation, taking deep breaths, responding intentionally with thought, reason, or rational mind.

• Observe: being mindful of your surroundings/environment, both in your feeling/thinking? What are others saying or doing • Proceed: mindfully – think about your goals/actions in the situation and behave with total awareness. Ask yourself, what can you do to make the situation

better and what kind of action will make the situation worse?

ACCEPTS – distracting with your reasonable mind

• Activities: watch an episode of your favorite video or tv show, exercise, read, clean up a room or area in your home, hang out with a friend/family, complete a puzzle or word game and etc.

• Contributing: help a friend/family with a project – donate time, items you no longer need or simply do something nice for someone else such as providing words of encouragement or giving the “social distancing” (recommended six feet apart) – remember, we have modern technology such as “facetime” or video chats.

• Comparisons: ponder about how you feel now as compared to a different time. Remember how fortunate you may be, and think of the different people in the world who may be dealing with the same issues • Emotion opposites: listen to a powerful song/album or watch an emotional movie or read an emotional book. It can be all types of emotions. The goal is to distract you from feeling “stuck.”

• Pushing away: whatever the situation is, simply push it to the side for a while.

Deny the problem for a moment. Block out painful/stressful thoughts/images from your mind and refuse to think about it.

• Thoughts: count something, whether it’s to 10 or the number of flowers in a pot or utilize the alphabet starting with “A” and associate it with a blessing (such as an “Angel watching over me”) B, C, and so on. Repeat words of your favorite song in your head or watch or read something thought-provoking.

Sensations: squeeze that stress ball, take a hot/cold shower, crank up loud music.

ABCs

Accumulate positive emotions by doing things that are pleasant.

Build mastery by doing things we enjoy.

Whether it is reading, cooking, cleaning, fixing a car, working a cross word puzzle, or playing a musical instrument. Practice these things to build master and in time we

Cope Ahead by rehearsing a plan, ahead of time, so that you are prepared to cope skillfully.

Using the principles of design

O

ver the last three months, we’ve taken a look at how both the compositional rules and the elements of design can make our photos better. As a quick refresher, when we refer to composition, we are referring to how the different parts or elements of an image are placed together to form the whole picture. There are a number of rules that act as guides to help us place those elements. The rules we looked at were the Rule of Thirds and the Golden Spiral. When we speak of the elements of design, we are talking about visual parts that we choose to include in a photo. These parts or elements can include texture, line, shape, form, color, pattern, and space. This month we’ll take a basic look at the principles of design as applied

to photography.

Compositional rules and design elements are visual tools that we photographers use to organize a photo into a whole.

The principles of design differ in that, they are used to create an effect, convey a message or impart feeling to an image. There are seven principles of design; they are balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, repetition, hierarchy and unity. We’ll tackle just one of those principles of design, the principle of balance.

Before we delve into balance and design, let’s talk about why achieving balance is important. As previously stated, principles of design are used to create an effect, convey a message or impart a feeling to an image. Photos that lack bal-

ance can leave a viewer feeling the same, unbalanced. Sometimes you may want to create imbalance and tension, imbalance can also be a creative tool. But if you’re goal is to create a pleasing, stable composition that feels complete to the viewer, striking the right balance is important.

The design principle of balance comes in three flavors, symmetry, asymmetry, and radial symmetry. In a symmetrically balanced image, both sides of a composition share the same subject matter, like a mirrored image. In an asymmetrical image, balance is achieved by using contrasting elements. And lastly, with radial symmetry, elements are equally spaced around a

central point, like spokes on a wheel. Let’s take a look at an example of each of these types of symmetry.

Let’s first look at balanced symmetry.

A symmetrical balance is aesthetically pleasing. It feels right, and remember, these design principles are about creating an effect, conveying a message or imparting feeling to an image. With this type of symmetry, no one element of the picture dominates. In a symmetrical image, an element may draw your eye, but no element distracts attention from the whole of the image. In the example image of steps leading to a beach, you can see that the right and left sides of the

image are “mirror-image” like, but they are not exact copies of each other. Except for the green trash can, the elements are symmetrical. But, in no way does the trash can distract, it doesn’t throw the

weight of the image off.

Now, let’s look at the image that features a screen door and a large terracotta pot. This image displays asymmetrical balance. The large rectangle of the door and

other elements of the left side of the frame are substantial; they’re heavy. But, on the opposite side of the image, note how the large, orange, color block of terracotta pot seems to draw equal attention. It carries

equal visual weight and balances with the opposite side of the image. Asymmetry is harder to visualize, but again, it’s about the balanced feel of an image.

Now we come to radial symmetry with its equally spaced elements around a central point. I could have demonstrated radial symmetry with a safe example image of a Ferris wheel. But instead, I wanted to demonstrate that we don’t have to strictly adhere to the exact language in the symmetry descriptions. With this image of the Angel Oak Tree, one gets the feeling of ominous tentacles reaching out from the central point of the ancient giant. As a whole it works, and again, it’s about the feeling of the image.

There we have an introduction into one of seven principles of design. Your mission now is to research the remaining principles and incorporate them into your photographs. Law Navigating The Law

he South Carolina Supreme Court recently handed down an interesting murder decision. State v.

Young. Filed Feb. 5, 2020. Appellate Case No: 2018-001861. The facts are that Young Sr. and a Robinson had a long history of violent encounters with each other. Robinson showed up at Young’s house and be-

gan arguing with Young, Jr. and pulled out a gun. Young, Sr. stepped in and attempted to take the gun away. Robinson fired a couple shots at Young Sr.’s feet, then fled in his car. The Youngs “armed up” and took off after him. A rolling, cat and mouse gun battle ensued that lasted over an hour and crossed multiple neighborhoods.

The Youngs found Robinson’s unmanned car parked on a street in a residential neighborhood. Young Jr. then used his gun to “swiss cheese” Robinson’s car, putting over twenty bullet holes in it with his gun. The Youngs got in their car to drive off. Robinson came out of hiding and began shooting at the Youngs’ retreating car. One of his bullets missed and killed an eight-year-old child. All three were charged with the murder of the young child. This presents a novel question in South Carolina, though other states’ Supreme Courts have faced the issue before. Our court cited

a number of those sister state decisions in coming to its own decision.

South Carolina, as do most states, has long recognized the doctrine of transferred intent. That is, if I pull out a gun intending to shoot and kill you but miss and kill your spouse instead, I am guilty of murdering your spouse. Though I had no intent to kill your spouse, and intent is an element that the State has to prove beyond a reasonable doubt, I, nevertheless, had intent to kill and that is transferred to the unintended victim.

South Carolina has also long recognized the “mutual combat” doctrine which is similar to “the hand of one is the hand of all” doctrine. Either doctrine finds that everyone on both sides of the combat is guilty of murder when one of the combatants is murdered. Quoting from a 1918 South Carolina Supreme Court case, “[E]very one [sic] is presumed to know the consequenc-

es of his act, and if one voluntarily enters a mutual combat where deadly weapons are used, knowing that they are being used, and death results to one of the participating parties, every one [sic] engaged in such combat is equally guilty, regardless of whether he used a deadly weapon or not.

And regardless of whether he was on one side or the other makes no difference, and where all are participating in the mutual combat, all are equally responsible for the natural consequences.” State v. Brown, 108 S.C. 490.

You can see how the Young/Robinson situation is a merger of the doctrines of transferred intent, mutual combat and the hand of one is the hand of all. But the Court found that there is also an element of aiding and abetting in the situation. Quoting from a Maryland Case, “Though the groups were adversaries at one level of analysis, at the level of analysis relevant to depraved[-] heart murder, each group aided, abetted, and encouraged the other to engage in urban warfare.” Alston v. State, 662 A.2d 247 (Md. Ct. Spec. App. 1994).

You can guess how the South Carolina Supreme Court decided this question.

“We extend our mutual combat jurisprudence to permit finding all mutual combatants criminally liable in situations where an innocent bystander is killed by one of the combatants.”

“The Youngs and Robinson voluntarily and jointly created a battlefield … Given the Youngs’ and Robinson’s collective actions in carrying out the gun battle, it is reasonable for the law of mutual combat to serve as the foundation of a murder charge - to hold each one responsible for both his own actions and the actions of the others.

Because we find the deadly force used in this case was the result of collective action, we hold the responsibility for the victim’s death was collective as well. Accordingly, we hold Young Jr. was properly charged with the victim’s murder under the theory of mutual combat.”

And speaking of the hand of one being the hand of all, we are not yet out of the woods on the Coronavirus pandemic. So please let’s keep on keeping our hands to ourselves and wash, wash, wash. Fade in: Daydream It starts out, just as any fan encounter would with me wondering what the hell I would say to the man featured in almost all of my childhood wall posters. But it’s a daydream after all, so courage is more accessible. With his back turned, I tap him on the shoulder and stick out my hand. Fortunately for me, my timing is great. I have met him on a day he still has some energy for fans. So, he meets my hand, shakes it, and awards me with a minute of his time.

I am grateful and like any other basketball fan, I express my admiration of his career, his shoe line, and dunking prowess while doing my best to remind myself to speak clearly and to not act too goofy.

Conscious that my minute with Michael is nearly up, I mention disc golf and if he’d ever played it. Suddenly I’d have Michael Jordan’s interest. Whereas before, I was just another fan keeping him from someplace, after mentioning disc golf I was now worth listening to. Being an avid traditional golfer, he’d heard of disc golf, but had always dismissed it as nonsense. But lately, it had been on his radar because his youngest children had talked about playing. I’d explain how it was becoming the people’s golf and once you figured out how to throw it was quite addictive. Not wanting to keep him from his busy day (I’m sure he’d have a new line of Jordan Brand something or another to approve of, possibly house shoes for the increasing number of people

home-bound), I’d wish him well and leave him be.

No freaking way!? To my astonishment, after expecting him to turn around and leave, he’d ask, in his deep Michael Jordan voice. “You got time to play a round and show me?” “Do I? Of, course,” I would say overjoyed, while figuring out a way to postpone whatever I had planned at the moment (which in all likelihood was nothing). We’d travel to a nearby course and I’d show him the basics, letting him borrow several of my discs. And despite being nervous to play alongside Michael Jordan, I’d play sensational disc golf – hitting lines that I’d only seen the pros make and making putts like they were going out of style.

Jordan, too, (due to my excellent crash course in disc golf technique) played well and was having a good time. A few holes into it, as expected, he would get a phone call and would have to leave. As a parting gift, though, I’d give him the discs he used

during the round and say, “It’s the least I could do for all of the basketball enjoyment you provided me as a Chicago Bull.”

Disc Golf: one and done for Jordan?

I would leave that round thinking Jordan would never play disc golf again, but a week later, I get wind that he’s been tweeting up a storm about how he’s been bitten by the disc golf bug. Pictures and videos soon pop up from the Jordan Instagram and Facebook accounts about the disc golf course he’s begun to install at his compound. Next thing you know, everyone is talking about disc golf. Big name corporations affiliated with Jordan like Hanes, Gatorade, even Nike line up to sponsor professional disc golfers and the events they play in. Thousands of people flock to professional disc golf events to spectate. Then, it’s only a matter of time before every American is gathered around their television to see who will win the US Disc Golf Championship– all

because Michael Jordan started playing disc golf.

Sounds silly doesn’t it? Well, my daydream probably is. Despite many disc golfers, including me, wanting disc golf to be accepted as a major American sport right now, it may not achieve that status in our lifetimes.

Disc Golf aces on ESPN It was thought that once ESPN found out about disc golf and started sharing disc golf highlights that the mainstream ice would start to break.

And, maybe it did, a little bit, when the sports network started a few years back to show the occasional hole-in-one clip from the pro tour. But we’re still a ways away from America embracing disc golf. Disc golfers are just so in love with their sport, they want everyone else to experience it, too. It combines the perfect amount of organized athleticism while still embracing the weird.

Oh well Maybe disc golf’s relative obscurity is for the best. It’s still extremely affordable. Once you’ve purchased your discs, in many places it’s free to play at public parks. Plus, dealing with crowded courses and waiting around to play is almost non-existent. If the sport became mainstream popular, we might lose all of that. Up for a round MJ? Still, that’s not going stop disc golfers from wondering just how we’ll crack into the mainstream sooner than later. And maybe Michael Jordan is just the one to do it. C O M ME RCIA L The first thing that caught my eye were the number of trophies up on shelves, then, I N D U S TRIA L when we went into the race car shop, I couldn’t believe the number of those huge checks they give the winner for big races all over the walls. I guess it’s easy to tell how successful a driver is by how many of those checks he’s won over the years.

Bryan is one of the top dogs in the Late Models, mostly running in the 604 class.

He also has the 525 CT engine for those special events, but the costs of jumping to different classes and traveling to various tracks gets quite expensive. “The biggest thing we find are there are way too many series running out there. ier, however most series run their own tire rules, shock rules and other parts and pieces that make it pretty expensive to jump around to different tracks and classes.”

Bryan has been successful over the years. moving up from lower divisions to four cylinders, Renegades, and finally up to the Crate Late Models, the 602, 604 and the 525. Bryan has had a lot of success in his Longhorn Late Model over the years. In 2018, he won the Topless Tour, the 2019 South Eastern Crate Association title and the King of the Carolinas event.

While he has made Carolina Speedway his home track for the last few years, he also has won at Lancaster Speedway, Cherokee Speedway and other tracks out of the area. “I’m kind of up in the air about my solid 2020 plans. There’s been a rule/ division change at Lancaster and Carolina that would force me to make not only changes to the car but will increase my tire expenses. Right now, we’re thinking about doing some more traveling to bigger shows, perhaps running more at Cherokee Speedway, we’ll just have to see how things work out. It’s pretty hard, hitting tracks three and four hours away on, say, a Friday night, as both my dad and myself are busy at our jobs.” We talked about his racing future and where he would like to see himself. “I’d really like to travel to tracks I’ve never run at to run against other competition and different track layouts. You only get better in this sport by testing the best drivers out there.

Believe me, there’s stiff competition at the tracks I run at now, it’s just you want to test yourself against drivers you’ve never run against.”

One of the keys to his success is working at John Page racing for a few years. starting out as a floor sweeper and parts cleaner. “Wes is one of the best setup guys I ever worked with, and he passed so much of his knowledge to me, that’s the biggest thing that’s helped me over the years.” As time passed, Bryan built shocks for customers, worked on Page’s race cars, hung bodies, built body panels, “I listened and learned.”

Although Mullis moved on, his rela-

tionship with Page Racing and Wesley is as strong as it’s ever been, “If I ever need a questions answered or some help, he’s right there to help.” Of course, you have to know Cheeseburger, like so many of his fans do. The guy is easy to talk to, is a clean driver, always welcomes fans into his pit area at the track, just a real assert to the track and the sport.

Like so many others, his sponsors are what keep him running week to week. But what I found a little unusual, not only are they sponsors, but friends - both on and off the track. Helping Bryan Mullis Racing is Walker Electric in Rock Hill, WP Shocks, (John Page Racing), Collins Signs, Stoney Lonesome, Superior Tire, Kenny Lamb Race Engines.

When Bryan isn’t working his regular job, he also owns and operates BMR Bodies, where he fabricates and installs bodies on race cars. It’s easy to see his work - his own #67 Crate Late Models looks brand new. “I don’t care if it’s just a wheel rub from another car or a hit, I never show up and any race with any damage whatsoever. My dad and I are proud of what we do and how we look on the track. We are representing not only ourselves but our sponsors, who we consider partners.”

When you come to the track and you hear fans yelling for Cheeseburger, it’s not the food their looking at, it’s one of the top drivers in the area, Bryan “Cheeseburger” Mullis doing his thing.

Racing update: Bryan recently won one of the biggest weekends of racing at Cherokee Speedway. On Feb. 29, he finished in second place in his feature; on March 1, he won the March Madness feature event for the 604 Crate Late Models. yc Stu Lord is a former NASCAR track manager, writer and talk show host living in York. Finding the North Star

A

common misconception is that the North Star is the brightest star in the night-time sky. But the North Star, also called Polaris, barely makes the top 50 list in terms of brightness. What makes Polaris so important is not its brightness, but its position in the sky.

The North Star is above Earth’s North Pole. We call its place in the sky the North Celestial Pole. Its altitude is equal to one’s latitude. That means that you can follow Polaris and let it get higher and higher until you are nearly at the North Pole. It doesn’t work out precisely, because Polaris isn’t precisely at the North Celestial Pole, so as you go to higher latitudes its usefulness in finding your way is less, but here in the continental U.S., it works just fine.

Finding Polaris is pretty easy. If you have a compass or a smart device that shows north, face north and look up.

Here in York County, our latitude is 35 degrees, so Polaris is the brightest celestial object about one-third of the way up. If you don’t have a compass, many streets run north-south or east-west, so you can use local landmarks and streets,

or a map, to help you get oriented.

If the Big Dipper is in the sky, you can star hop to Polaris. Find the two stars at the end of the bowl, farthest away from the handle. Their names are Merak and Dubhe. Connect these two stars with an imaginary line away from the open end of the bowl and follow that line for about five times their distance apart. The star that you come to will be Polaris.

Earth, our planet, rotates or spins on its axis in space, once every 23 hours and 56 minutes, a sidereal day. The 24 hour day that we all familiar with is called a solar day. This is the average amount of time from noon to noon. Earth not only rotates, it also orbits or revolves about the Sun once each year, so the extra four minutes is how long it takes Earth to spin a bit more to face the Sun once again.

Because Earth rotates once each day, it appears to us as though the sun rises in the eastern sky every morning and sets in the western sky every evening. But once the sun sets, Earth keeps on spinning.

Most of the stars and other objects in the nighttime sky also rise up in the eastern

sky and set in the western sky during the night. With Polaris being above Earth’s North Pole, it is the pivot point around which the night sky appears to turn.

Think of it as the pole in the center of a merry-go-round. The ponies of the merry-go-round all move, but the pole stays in the same place. The stars beneath Polaris in the sky appear to move from west

to east as they make counterclockwise circles about the North Celestial Pole.

In the Southern Hemisphere, a similar thing happens with stars moving around a point directly above the South Pole, but there is no bright star there, i.e. no South Star. People in the Southern Hemisphere can use the Southern Cross, the constellation of Crux, to find south, much like we in the United States use the North Star. If you connect the stars along the longer axis, the head and foot of the cross, and follow them down about four times their distance apart, you are approximately there.

Interestingly, Polaris has not always been the North Star. Earth also wobbles like a spinning top, a movement called precession. Spin a top and notice that it doesn’t stay straight up and down. The axis does not stay in the same place, but moves in a circular pattern. We say that the top precesses. Earth precesses too, but slowly.

One precession circle is about 26,000 years long. It’s not noticeable during a single lifetime, but over the course of thousands of years, it is indeed noticeable and the location of the North Celestial Pole changes.

One of the shafts of the Great Pyramid in Egypt points to a star in Draco, fainter than Polaris, which served as the North Star for the Ancient Egyptians. editors do. Some people think editors contribute to building the foundation for both fiction and nonfiction books and then correct the errors.

Developmental editors

Developmental editors help writers plan the storyline or present nonfiction information. Even published authors consult developmental editors for advice on how to flesh out characters and create plots and plot twists. Most fiction books have a main plot and two or more subplots. Weaving those together takes thought and skill.

A writer can work closely with the developmental editor throughout the writing process, or simply develop the plan and check in when necessary. When an author is under contract to a publisher, the company sometimes assigns a developmental editor to establish specific topics, characters, or themes.

Substantive editors

Substantive editors look at a completed or nearly completed manuscript to ensure the storyline flows naturally, has no developmental holes, answers readers’ questions, and ensures the arc, or crescendo, of the main and subplots fall where they should. Between the initial idea and the copy editor, the writer can create five or more drafts. Improving and developing the story is tiring but fulfilling. The good news is that most drafts are not entire rewrites. They address certain parts of the work - sometimes only specific details. After you’ve improved your work as best you can, it’s ready for a copy editor.

Copy editors and line editors

Copy editors are often called line editors because they read the manuscript line by line. Editing is slow and tedious because of the attention to detail. These

editors are not the grammar police.

Trained copy editors do have vast knowledge of grammar and punctuation, but they go beyond that, to include knowledge and verification of topics discussed and style guide adherence.

Clarity

Copy editors read manuscripts to ensure clarity. The story, or information, must make sense. Copy editors objectively look for questions readers might have.

Often, this requires the writer to add more information after the copy editor is finished. Other efforts toward clarity include rewriting a sentence or paragraph.

Sometimes, paragraphs need to be moved to provide necessary information sooner or leave questions to make unfolding the plot more exciting.

Word choice

Copy editors read to make sure the work is succinct and keeps the reader’s interest.

Concise verbiage flows better and keeps the reader engaged. Phrases such as “there is” or “there were” slow the reader. Instead of participating in the next action, the reader muscles through inessential phrases. Adverbs such as “very” and “really” slow the reader and reveal a limited vocabulary.

Consider using tiny instead of “very small” or enormous as opposed to “really big.”

Correct information

Most people don’t realize that a copy editor checks facts. If a book referred to Brattonsville as a farm and house recreated to show life in the 1800s, readers from this area would dismiss the book and author as uninformed. Accuracy is as important as writing quality.

I check all facts I do not know are accurate. When I worked for the Augusta Chronicle, a car killed Sen. Strom Thur-

mond’s daughter, Nancy, in Columbia. The reporter wrote that the accident occurred on Hardin Street, but I knew Harden was the correct spelling. The newspaper shouldn’t look like it didn’t care to get the facts correct, and neither should authors.

Consistency

Every element of the piece, whether a blog post or a 500-page novel, should be consistent with characters, point of view, voice, style, and other points. The style guidelines the writer or publisher uses, such as the Chicago Manual of Style, provide rules for consistency.

I copy edit for the issues above, providing feedback and encouragement. My questions can seem idiotic, but I want to clarify facts or ensure that my interpretation is accurate. Occasionally, the job evolves into substantive editing, but that is not my area of expertise.

After I copy edit, writers consider my input, incorporate necessary changes, then have a proofreader check punctuation and spelling before submitting the work to an agent, publisher, or self-publishing platform. I recommend using a trained proofreader who knows the most current Chicago style.

Other editors

Try to avoid pre-made mixers Fresh Fruit

I absolutely hate sweet and sour mix. Well, that’s a bit narrow-minded. I hate all premade mixes equally. The first thing I do when I go to a bar is to look and see if they are squeezing fresh fruit. If I see bottles of fake mixes, I turn toward the nearest beer tap. Because any bar that’s using commercial mixes just doesn’t care. Then again, if you lick them long enough, roll-on deodorants might begin to taste yummy.

The citrus press

On the bright side, since almost every bar engages in this unholy transgression against nature, you will receive rave reviews at your home bar by simply refusing to use anything pre-made and squeezing your own citrus fruit.

Plus, the act of squeezing fruit into your cocktail shaker offers a nice bit of showmanship that your guests will enjoy. Citrus presses come in three basic sizes and are pretty inexpensive.

I like the chrome ones better than the painted ones because, if you use it a lot, the acid from

the fruit causes the paint to peel. Although, I do have to hand it to the marketing genius who thought they had to paint a lemon press yellow because if it was painted pink I would try to use it to squeeze a watermelon.

A case in point

Every bar in town serves a margarita and darn near every one of them uses that icky, green sour mix. So, it’s a pretty good chance you’re like me and have lowered your standards to slurp down a few Lik-M-Ade margaritas along life’s rocky path. A fresh fruit margarita, then, offers a pretty good comparison to make my point. Follow this simple recipe below and I’ll wager you will never use premade mararita mix again. Of course, a premade mix might be handy when you are whipping up 30 or 40 gallons of the stuff in a big galvanized tub in the backyard. When I do, I’ve found there’s quite a bit of showmanship to be had by standing in the middle of it and stirring it with a canoe paddle. Just remember to take your shoes off. yc

Recipe Margarita 2 oz. gold tequila (any brand will do as long as it comes in a glass bottle) 1 oz. Cointreau or Harlequin Orange Liqueur 1 oz. of simple syrup (just melt 1 teaspoon of sugar in 1 oz. of warm water, you silly thing) Juice of 1 fresh lime Combine all ingredients in a cocktail shaker.

Shake vigorously with ice and open pour into a salted rocks glass.

Hint: very few cocktails call for a salted rim, so it’s a lot of fun to use the recipe above and vary the salt techniques. Instead of moistening the rim with water, I like to rub it with fruit before dipping it in the salt. I usually use lime since I have them already at hand, however an orange or pineapple makes a nice, subtle change of pace. Plus, you can either buy or blend your own salt variations. I found some black, smoked salt and mixed it with some dark red chili powder.

Feel free to steal that. If you’re a Gamecock, it might come in handy on game day.

Early hospitals

T

he earliest hospitals in Rock Hill and York were located in homes. The first hospital in Rock Hill opened in the early 1890’s, by Dr. Thomas A. Crawford and Dr. William Francis Strait, in a rented house on Elm Street. This hospital closed when Dr. Crawford died in 1919, his associate Dr. Strait having died in 1898.

Dr. William Wallace Fennell moved to Rock Hill in 1897 and started a hospital in his home, also on Elm Street. By 1907, Dr. Fennell opened the Fennell Infirmary, a hospital and training school for nurses, on Clay Street. After his death in 1926, Dr. Fennell’s associate Dr. W.B. Ward ran the Infirmary until he sold it in 1935 to the Sisters of St. Francis. It was renamed St. Philip’s Mercy Hospital later that year.

Divine Savior Hospital in York opened

in May 1938 by the Sisters of Charity of Our Lady of Mercy. It began in a converted two-story brick house with 8 beds on South Congress Street. In the early days, the Sisters of Charity sometimes accepted goods such as livestock, tomatoes and potatoes as payment.

In 1942, the Sisters opened a 36-bed building next door to the original site. Additions made to this building in 1959 and 1961 increased patient beds and in 1963, a nursing home was added to the property.

More beds were added in 1968 when St. Mary’s Wing was constructed. The hospital and nursing home were accredited in 1974 by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Hospitals and at the time, employed 134 people. In 1989, the ownership of Divine Savior was transferred to another order.

In 1978, structural deficiencies needed to be addressed and the SC State Health Department Franchising Review Committee approved 3.6 billion dollars from the Building and Modernization Program to build a modern two-story medical services building and renovate the existing hospital.

Due to their declining numbers, the Sisters petitioned the Roman Catholic Church to transfer ownership to the Sisters of Bon Secours and in July 1989, Bon Secours Health System bought Divine Saviour Hospital. The emergency and acute care facility closed in October 1991 and was purchased

by White Oak Manor in December 1991. It

is now a nursing home facility.

In 1938, the South Carolina General Assembly authorized the organization of a hospital board and construction of the York County Hospital. It was to be a thoroughly modern hospital accommodating 90 beds. The hospital officially accepted the first of its patients on May 15, 1940. By 1976, York County Hospital was renamed York General Hospital. yc Nancy Sambets is the Director of Archives at the Historical Center of York County in York.

ver the last decade, adventure hammocks have gone from the fringe to mainstream. I’m not sure it’s possible to go anywhere that has trees without seeing someone lounging in a hammock, and where there aren’t trees they’ve begun bringing hammock stands. And who can blame them? Hammocks are more comfortable than chairs, allow nice breezes to remove sweat potential, and falling asleep in them only rarely results in your falling on your face, despite what you may think. But what about something more than just lazy days; what if you wanted to camp or even backpack out of it?

If you’re wanting to sleep out of a ham-

mock, at night, for several nights in a row at minimum, there are some pros and cons to consider compared to a traditional option like a tent. Hammocks have some distinct advantages when it comes to terrain and temperature. If you’ve ever spent a night camped on a slight slope, waking up every hour as gravity slowly slides you to the bottom of the tent, the ability to just find 2 trees and level your hammock in seconds is very hard to beat. Of course the downside to this is you have to find 2 trees close enough to require less than 100’ of strapping material, and if your New Year’s resolution is going as well as mine, you’ll also need trees with the strength of the mighty sequoia.

yc magazine... York County’s Entertainingly Informative Magazine Above all other considerations is the weather. In the summer where rain is rare, the hammock is the best of all sleeping options. I find hammocks comfortable enough that a sleeping pad is not needed for comfort (which is one less thing to pack and save weight), and the breathable nature of high-tech hammocks allows breezes to easily pass through and cool you down.

Another benefit, which in the winter works against you, is that by being off the ground you radiate warmth in all directions hopefully preventing you from sweating to death. Short of air conditioning, a hammock can keep you cooler at night than any other option.

Warm and dry are the best-case scenario though. What if your desire to live the hammock life extends to all temperatures, climates, and weather? This is where the challenges start to build. The most obvious issue is rain, but maybe not for the issue you think. Keeping rain off the main body of any hammock is easy enough with a simple tarp used as a rain fly; the one concern is to make sure that the ropes or straps your hammock is hanging on don’t cause water to trickle down through the night, leaving you soaked. Camping-specific hammocks are available from several different manufacturers that have integrated rain flies and even more importantly in some areas, bug netting.

ing form of hammock camping is winter camping. The same laws of thermodynamics that make a hammock cool in the summer, make it downright frigid in the winter. Some people have managed the secret art of sleeping on top of a foam pad to try and salvage a little bit of warmth, but for mere mortals wishing to give this a try there are 4-season specific hammocks available with special pockets to hold their sleeping pads and specialty fabrics to try and retain as much heat as possible - but now the trade-off of efficiency and weight means that hammock will probably be nearly the weight of a tent - and I can guarantee you’ll be colder in it no matter what you do.

I’m finishing this article just as quarantine protocols are increasing with the temperature, so if you need to practice some social distancing a hammock is a good place to do it. An even better way to do it is out in the woods, away from people as much as possible. Food safety myths and truths

I

thought it an appropriate time to write an article about food safety, since many of us are talking about coronavirus and how to decrease the spread of germs.

The following information is from the USDA’s Fight Bac program.

1. Brownness in the center of a hamburger patty means it is done - myth or fact?

Myth! How do you know if (any) food is cooked to a safe internal temperature?

Use a food thermometer and measure its temperature. Ground meat should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160° F.

3. I need only to rinse the part I eat on fruits and vegetables; if I don’t eat the rind / skin, I don’t have to rinse it myth or fact?

Myth! Using a knife or peeler on the rind can transfer pathogens from the outside to the inside. Placing cut pieces of fruit / vegetables on a plate can also transfer pathogens to the edible portion. For this reason, it is recommended to rinse all fruits and vegetables under cold running water rubbing with hands or using a designated scrub brush. Dry the items with a paper towel or clean cloth.

2. Bacteria that can cause food poisoning are killed by freezing the food myth or fact?

Myth! Freezing just slows the growth of any bacteria present. As the food thaws, bacteria may begin to multiply. Once again, cooking the food to the recom-

eration. It is recommended to keep raw meat, poultry and seafood separate from ready-to-eat foods and leftovers.

5. It’s not necessary to clean the produce bin in the refrigerator; after all its just fruits and vegetables (I actually need to worry about the meat, chicken and mayonnaise!) - myth or fact?

Myth! One study showed the produce bin the ‘#1 ‘germiest places’ in the consumer’s refrigerator. That actually surprised me. Often people don’t know that many bacteria are natural to the soil in which our favorite fruits and vegetables are grown. Also, many hands touch the produce and could cross contaminate the food. So, what do you do? Wash your whole refrigerator and include the produce bin. Use hot water and liquid soap and clean cloths. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean cloth or allow to air dry (the drawer should dry outside of the refrigerator).

6. I am a vegetarian, so I won’t contract food poisoning - myth or fact?

Myth! I know in previous articles I’ve encouraged fruit and vegetable consumption, as these play an important role in health and disease prevention (and management), but once again, fruits and vegetables can carry a risk of foodborne illness. Rinse your produce under running tap water and use clean hands or a designated produce brush to clean, even the rinds and skins that are not consumed. We do not recommend detergents, soap, bleach, etc. Keep in mind the outside is porous and these products are not intended for consumption.

If the package is labeled ‘ready-toeat’ or pre-washed, the product does not need to be rewashed by the consumer.

I know many folks are going to give me some backlash about it, but commercial washing is far safer than home/consumer sinks and kitchens.

Finally, the most important thing you can do to avoid the spread of germs, including those related to foods, is to wash your hands! You may think you’ve heard it too many times to count, but believe me when I say it, I’ve seen a whole lot of folks who come to my classes involving food just sit there when it comes to time eat … and skip going to the rest room to wash their hands.

The process is simple: wet hands under running water and apply soap.

Lather up and use the friction as a way to physically lift up soil and germs and rinse. Use a clean towel or paper towel and, once again, use the friction to help remove any germs. This should take at least 20 seconds. Use a second hand to help you, or sing “Happy Birthday” – usually takes about two times! It’s actually a long process because most people do not take the time. This should be done multiple times a day, especially when handling food and utensils. yc Angela P. Outbreak 2.0: keeping people, pets safe

S

everal years ago, a new strain of influenza virus began to affect dogs in isolated areas of the United States. Fueled by some overly dramatic news reports, many people became concerned that their pet may be at risk for what was described as a “deadly new dog flu.” Several companies developed heavily-marketed vaccines, that, in my opinion, were designed as much to “cash in” on dog owners’ fears as to protect dogs against what, fortunately, has since proven to be a relatively minor health issue. During that “outbreak,” many of us in the veterinary profession walked a fine line, trying to not ignore honest questions but also trying to not incite panic.

In truth, we don’t always know ahead of time how serious or mild some “new”

disease outbreak may become; there are simply too many variables. In the case of canine influenza, a relatively common virus developed mild genetic changes (that’s what influenza viruses do all the time) that allowed it to infect dogs. It never became widespread, and only rarely caused severe disease when it did affect a dog.

It reminded us that there are many illnesses that can affect our pets. Every day, Depositphotos.com we and our pets are exposed to many different organisms that could cause us to be sick. Some of those illnesses are so common, harmful, or easily prevented that vaccines have been developed to protect us and/or our pets from them.

Whenever a “new” disease shows up in the animal or human population, the efforts of health officials go into high gear to understand and respond appropriately to it, as well as to provide accurate information to all of us. Their job is very important: if they underestimate it, we may miss an opportunity to protect lives, and if they overreact, the impact on “normal” life can be severe.

That’s where we are right now with the human coronavirus outbreak. Coronaviruses have been around a long time. Decades ago, a canine coronavirus vaccine was developed (we now know that it is not a severe disease in dogs), and the human SARS outbreak several years ago was caused by a strain of coronavirus. This new strain appears to have made the jump from animals to humans in late 2019, and because we had no natural immunity (immunity can only develop after exposure) the virus has spread throughout many parts of the world. It is not a flu virus, but, like the flu, can cause fever and respiratory symptoms and allow secondary infections to occur. It is indeed a pandemic, but please remember that doesn’t refer to its serious-

ness, only to the fact that it is widespread globally.

As I write this in midMarch, there have been several thousand human deaths worldwide, 60 of them in the U.S. Millions of people have been affected by the quarantines and travel bans and the overall economic consequences, and health agencies are scrambling to research the disease and develop control measures. Hopefully, the public health measures, including practicing good hygiene, limiting contact with sick individuals, and our own immune systems’ adaptation to the virus will limit the impact, but without question, there have already been dramatic impacts.

Although the global spread of emerging diseases has been on scientists’ radar for years, this has been a major health issue worldwide, and the international response has been unprecedented. My honest expectation is that our worst fears will not come to pass, but certainly each individual family that has suffered from coronavirus worldwide indeed deserves our prayers and support.

What does all this have to do with animal health?

First, this outbreak likely began as an animal virus; many new outbreaks of human disease do this. Monitoring animal health and understanding viruses in animals is an important part of protecting all of us. Veterinarians have played an important role in much of the basic research on coronaviruses Animals are also important sentinels for new diseases. Our pets, quite frankly, generally keep their noses and their mouths in places that cause them to come into contact with new diseases first. Veterinarians are often the first health professionals to be aware of new disease trends.

When humans are impacted by disease outbreaks, animals are affected as well.

Shipments of pet foods and medicines and

even shipments of meat, poultry, and dairy products can be impacted by travel bans.

Veterinarians are involved in all types of governmental decisions on these matters.

Just as we should all have our own family’s plans ready in case of temporary interruptions to “normal” life, we need to include our pets in those plans. Those plans aren’t fancy or expensive. For example: • Have enough pet food for two weeks.

Always keep a full bag in reserve.

• Have at least one month of any prescription medications your pets need.

• Keep a pet bug-out bag: a transportable crate or secure pet carrier, to use for all of your pets’ travel, with bedding, pet food and meds, vaccine records and pet ID documents. Microchip your pet.

No one really yet knows if the medical effects of human coronavirus are going to be any different than the other disease outbreaks that we have seen of the past few decades; it is precisely that uncertainty that has caused the disruptions to our lives that all of us have experienced. Please remember that the seriousness of a disease is not always related to the amount of press that it receives. For example, almost 500,000 people each year die from malaria and rabies kills 60,000 humans annually. As we learn more and more, and as the steps individuals and health agencies take begin to have an impact, we hope to see the infection, and the fear, begin to calm down.

In the meantime, focusing on the things we know we should always do, such as good hygiene and proper vaccinations, can help keep us and our pets as safe as possible. yc Bert Platt has lived and practiced veterinary medicine in York County for four decades, seeing many changes and advances in pet medical care during that time. I

n 1963, about a third of older Americans lived in poverty and there were few social programs to meet their needs.

Interest in older Americans and their concerns was growing. A meeting was held in April 1963 between President John F. Kennedy and members of the National Council of Senior Citizens in order to raise awareness of the problems facing seniors and to honor them. Then-President Kennedy and the Council proclaimed May as “Senior Citizens Month” as a time to acknowledge the contributions of past and current older persons to our country, especially those who defended our country.

Two years later, in 1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson formally declared May as “Older Americans Month” and passed the Older Americans Act of 1965. When Old-

er Americans Month was enacted; only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthday. The Act did much more than raise awareness or encourage community involvement – it did both these things well.

Johnson took Kennedy’s proclamation and intentions a step further by taking action that resulted in positive change, financial assistance and federal support for older Americans.

• Paved a way to passing the Medicare program to offer health care to seniors • Connects older adults and their caregivers to services that help older adults age with health, dignity and independence in their homes and communities where they want to be.

• In 2020, Congress must reauthorize this vital federal program. Tell your elected officials how important supporting OAA is to you. The National Association of Area Agencies on Aging (www.n4a.org) provides reauthorization talking points.

Every President since 1965 has issued a formal proclamation during or before the month of May asking that the entire nation pay tribute in some way to older persons in their communities. Older Americans Month is celebrated across the country though ceremonies, events, fair, and other such activities.

Every May, the Administration on Aging (AOA) and the Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads our nation’s observance of Older Americans Month.

This year’s theme “Make Your Mark” was selected to encourage and celebrate countless contributions that older adults make to our communities. Their time, experience, and talents benefit family, peers, and neighbors every day. Communities, organizations, and individuals of all ages are also making their marks. Everyone can make a difference in the lives of older adults, in support of caregivers, and to strengthen communities.

Around the nation, older adults make their marks every day as volunteers, employees, employers, parents, grandparents, mentors, and advocates. They offer their time, talents, and experience to the benefit of our communities. Since inception, Older Americans Month (OAM), has been a special time to recognize these contributions. This year’s OAM theme, Make Your Mark, highlights older adults’ unique and lasting contributions to their communities - everything from sharing a story with

Depositphotos.com grandchildren to leaving a legacy of community action. In the spirit of this theme, here are a few ways to make your mark this May and all year long: Volunteer your time. Local schools, shelters, food kitchens, and hospitals always need support. Help a neighbor by prepping a meal, picking up groceries, or giving them a ride. Or, take time to pass on your knowledge. Why not tutor a student who could use extra help in math, music, or science?

Share your story. There are so many ways to do this, from showing your grandkids around your old neighborhood to writing a book. Take a class and learn how to express yourself with the arts! Or, assemble a photo album of important moments in your life.

Get involved in your neighborhood. Join a homeowner or resident association, organize a block party, or sign up for a book club or other social group. Have a green thumb? Small projects like planting flowers in your yard or cleaning up the community have a big impact.

Communities that support and include all their members are stronger. Please join Catawba Area Agency on Aging in strengthening our community.

‘Nots’ from the apocalypse

ou read that right: we said “nots.” And the first thing we’re not going to do is panic.

The novel coronavirus and the disease it causes, COVID-19, are not a joke and not a hoax. In fact, they are very real and very frightening. Its effect on life as we know it has gone far beyond the frustrating and taken a deep dive into the surreal.

But it’s not going to bring us down. We at YC Magazine love our readers, our advertisers and our community and we are here for you – we appreciate you and stand

by you, just as you have always stood by us. So, while no one can predict the future, currently, we are not planning on going anywhere, anytime soon. And when life does return to normal, we will be here helping you celebrate.

In the meantime, we should be careful and prepared, but that’s not a reason to hoard toilet paper and canned goods in some backyard bomb shelter. While rampant pandemic is not anything to sneeze at, pardon the pun, we believe life must go on as best as it can.
