April is full of holidays like Good Friday on April 2 and Easter on April 4. And there’s a bit of fun with April Fools’ Day. But did you know about National Hanging Out Day on April 19 or National Peanut Butter and Jelly Day on April 2? There’s a long list of celebrated days and weeks, some commercially or marketing oriented, some seeking additional awareness, and others just a bit silly — National Take A Wild Guess Day and National High Five Day are both on April 15.

Here’s a fun one. National Find A Rainbow Day is April 3. I applaud any effort to boost awareness of looking up at and appreciating the sky, any time of day or night.

isions of cherry blossoms are dancing in my head. (And tulips, azaleas, and gardenias.) The first blossoms are spring’s happy messengers.

As I write this in March just before an early warm spell is predicted, it’s not just me that has some serious spring fever. I’ve already found two ladybugs in my house that I set free, hornets buzzing outside the house, and a bunch of flying insects all around the backyard.

Not much longer, and my grandmother’s irises will be in bloom. And then the dragonfly warriors will begin.

For many years now, a bunch of these large dragonflies, 3-plus inches or so long, swoop and dive for tiny insects in a concentrated area above my deck, about 25-30 feet over my head. Laying back in my lounger, they look like miniature biplanes in battle. It’s a real air show.

National Earth Day April 22. When I found that date online, I got up from typing on my laptop and walked out to my backyard, headed for my red maple tree. We bought this tree many years ago at one of York County’s Earth Day Birthday celebrations at the museum. It was in a small pot, maybe one foot tall, for sale by the Master Gardeners of York County. I remember buying it and thinking, “This little tree is going to be around for a long time.” I still have a mental photograph of that moment.

Since then, I’ve watched it grow tall, extend its shade canopy, and provide a landing for birds coming to visit my feeders. It’s a good 15 feet tall and beautifully bushy today.

When it’s fully leafed out, I can lean my head into the middle of its branches for the most glorious red-gold filtered light.

We can look forward to getting back

our local festivals and celebrations hopefully soon, when they can be held safely.

Until then, celebrate Earth Day and plant your own tree. A single tree benefits many organisms. They help clean our air and provide oxygen. Their shade helps keep us cool. Trees even help us heal.

I mentioned my grandmother’s irises earlier. My mom had kept some of the seeds from her mother’s irises and shared them with me long ago. Every year, they bloom and expand, and they’re beautiful. They’ve even been featured on a YC Magazine cover. Interestingly, the Greek word for iris means rainbow. How cool is that! yc

Patent Medication in York County: Part II

R

eaders may recall that earlier this year I wrote an article on patent medications found in and around York County during the Victorian Era. For those of you who missed the previous article, patent medicines are over-the-counter drugs or drug combinations that were promoted to the public using a distinctive name and/or packaging. Some were simple combinations of flavoring and coloring and held no real medicinal value while others contained dangerous opiates or alcohol that could easily be lethal in the wrong doses. Patent medicines often claimed to cure a variety of ailments but, because they were sold in a time before consumer pro-

tection laws, they were rarely as effective as advertised and often included a litany of harmful side effects. Let us continue our exploration of patent medication as we examine some prominent remedies found in York County.

Professor Wood’s Hair Restorative:

Hair treatment has been a common practice for thousands of years. As early as 300 B.C., ancient Egyptians and Greeks were using hair products made of animal and plant fats to condition their hair. However, during the Victorian Era, Americans experienced a golden age of “miracle” cures and hair tonics. One of the most prevalent hair tonics in and around York County was

Professor Wood’s Hair Restorative. Advertisements and testimonials for this hair tonic can be found in issues of the Yorkville Enquirer from December 1858 to December 1876. Documentary evidence suggests that Professor Wood’s Hair Restorative was being sold by Allison and Bratton Druggists in Yorkville as early as 1858. The hair restorative’s titular “Professor Wood” was Orlando J. Wood, a medical doctor who started a practice in St. Louis, Missouri in 1854. Three years later, he established Orlando J. Wood & Co., Hair Restorative & Patent Medicines. O.J. Wood & Co. had a depot at 114 Market Street in St. Louis, Missouri as well as a depot in New York

City at 312 Broadway.1 Professor Wood’s Hair Restorative claimed to cure and prevent any number of maladies including dandruff, inflammation and itching of the scalp, greying hair, and hair loss. In 1870, the Detroit Review of Medicine and Pharmacy examined Professor Wood’s Hair Restorative and found that it contained 3.08 grains of lead per fluid ounce.2 This revelation resulted in backlash which prompted Orlando J. Wood & Co. to change the formula. An advertisement in an 1876 issue of the Yorkville Enquirer promises that the new and improved formula “has no injurious qualities.”3 Professor Wood’s Hair Restorative was

yc magazine... York County’s Entertainingly Informative Magazine sold in an embossed glass bottle that was advertised in three sizes: large, medium, and small. Smallest size held half a pint, the medium held “at least twenty percent more in proportion than the small,” and the large held a quart.4 The bottle was embossed on three sides with the words “PROFESSOR WOOD’S HAIR RESTORATIVE/DEPOT ST. LOUIS MO/AND NEW YORK. Documentary evidence suggests that the bottles were wrapped with branded paper, known as a “circular”, which featured glowing testimonials. Advertisments printed in numerous newspapers encouraged skeptics to “See [the] circular around each bottle and no one can doubt.”5 Another advertisement instructed pontential patrons to “see [the] large circular around each bottle” for “testimony no one could possibly resist.”6

Essence of Peppermint:

Essence of peppermint is one of the only 18th century English patent medications to survive well into the 20th century. Peppermint, which is indigenous to England, was commercially cultivated in Mitcham, Surrey as early as 1750. Cultivation of peppermint began in the United States in New York around 1816 and gradually extended into Ohio, Indiana, and Michigan.

Peppermint was typically cultivated for its essential oil which was obtained by distilling the dried leaves and flowering tips of the plant in water. Essence of peppermint

was prepared by mixing oil of peppermint with alcohol. One 1866 source indicates that it was typical for one fluid ounce oil of peppermint to be mixed with “one pint of rectified spirit.” The final product was typically colored green by using a little of the herb itself, parsley, or spinach. The pale green color offered proof to some consumers that the product was genuine. Essence of peppermint had a variety of uses but was typically used as a vehicle for taking other unpalatable medication. Castor Oil, for example, was often taken “Swimming on a glass of peppermint water.” However, essence of peppermint had some medicinal value in and of itself. It aided with nausea, relieved “spasmodic pains of the stomach and bowels” and helped expel flatus.

The pale green liquid typically came in a small glass vial that measured approximately 3” tall. This distinctive bottle was embossed on all four sides with the words “BY THE KINGS PATENT ESSENCE OF PEPPERMINT. Even in America it was common to see the words “BY THE KINGS PATENT” embossed on the bottle. This was due to a 1783 medicine stamp act that was imposed on all patent medications in England. Although the act was changed many times in the 18th and 19th centuries, medicines like essence of peppermint continued to be subject to the tax. The containers were officially marked, or “stamped,”

to indicate that the tax had been paid. The association between essence of peppermint and the English stamp was so strong that American versions of the patent medication often featured a facsimile of the English government stamp. A couple of interesting questions

r. Lesslie, I have a cousin who’s recently been diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. There doesn’t seem to be much he can do about this. Do you have any suggestions? I don’t want to go down that path.

None of us want to go down that path, and yes, I have a few suggestions. First, I need to, once again, beat the old drum of “lifestyle choices.” If you’ve read my columns in the past, you know it’s all about being physically active, smoking cessation, controlling your weight and blood pressure and blood sugar, moderate alcohol consumption (if at all), proper diet, and adequate sleep. Having addressed that, there is in fact some good news to share regarding the prevention

of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and possibly forestalling or preventing the full-blown development of dementia. I came across a review article that examined the use of a once-daily drink that over a trial period of three years demonstrated significant reductions in cognitive decline when started early during the onset of MCI. It’s something called Fortasyn Connect (Souvenaid). While not available in the U.S. at this time, its components are readily obtainable.

They include B complex vitamins, vitamin C, vitamin E, long-chain omega-3 fatty acids, choline, uridine, and selenium. My take on this? In reasonable amounts, these supplements are safe and inexpensive. And if there is a chance that MCI can be improved or prevented,

this is something we should consider.

In another related question: I’m thinking about starting Gingko Biloba to improve my memory. Heard it can help prevent dementia. Any thoughts?

several significant side effects, including bleeding problems and interactions with several commonly used drugs— coumadin, ibuprofen, and naproxen. So, for me, this is a “no”.

Doc, I was eating a hamburger the other day, and a co-worker started shaming me about my “dietary choices.” She’s a vegan and told me I was poisoning myself and ruining the planet. I had no idea. What do you think?

Life is a long series of choices, and what we eat is an important one. Choosing a vegan diet is one of those, but there are some problems of which we need to be aware. First, we need to examine the history of our species. From the outset, we have been omnivores, eating a wide and varied diet. This is not to say that all

In fact, when comparing vegans with those who eat meat, vegans have more than twice the risk of suffering a hip fracture. That’s also true for fractures at other sites. There are other concerns about the vegan diet. An interesting and at times controversial read can be found in Lierre Keith’s book, The Vegetarian Myth: Food, Justice, and Sustainability. In it, she describes her own twenty-year experiences with being a vegan. If you’re considering this dietary approach, I’d recommend doing some research. But your co-worker is right about the hamburger. There are better and healthier choices.

Everybody in my family has diabetes. I’m thirty-eight years old and don’t have it yet. Is there something I can do

to prevent this from happening?

Hear that drum beat again? First, make the right lifestyle choices. And yes, there is something we can all do to help reduce our risk of developing diabetes. That risk reduction can be as much as 50%! That’s a significant number, especially when we consider that in the United States the chance of developing diabetes is one-in-three—almost one-in-two for those of us of Hispanic lineage. This is an epidemic, and one that shows no signs of abating.

So, what’s the magic bullet? It’s what your mother always told you—eat your fruit and vegetables. We need at least five servings a day of these food groups, something that’s easily achievable for each of us. But we need to be intentional. Think back to yesterday, and what you had to eat. Be honest. Can you count five combined servings in these two categories? Some days I don’t make

The enduring egg

S

o, have you found all of those Easter eggs yet? There always seem to be a few that are hidden too well, only to turn up in June, July, or even later. Eggs may be fragile, but they are made to be resilient. Indeed, they have been around for millions of years (and I hope it doesn’t take that long to find those lost Easter eggs)!

Even the most primitive of animals (sponges, jellyfish, etc.) are capable of producing some type of egg, but the egg as we know it began with the first vertebrates, the fish. Fish eggs, like others, are produced and laid by females. Males swim along and fertilize the eggs after they have been laid.

These eggs have no shell. The developing embryo is surrounded by a jelly-like mass until it hatches. This is not a problem since the eggs are under water, and there is no danger of drying out. Even when the first amphibians crawled from the water, they were not fully capable of conquering the land. Frogs, toads, and salamanders must return to the water (or at least very moist areas) to lay their shell-less eggs. Amphibians have actually experienced a global decline in recent decades, and it is suspected that increased UV rays from the sun may be responsible. Because the eggs have no

shell and are often laid in shallow water, developing embryos are exposed to direct sunlight. Intense UV rays can cause death, or at least strange mutations. A friend once brought me a cricket frog with six legs!

It was the reptiles that truly secured their hold on dry land with the development of a specialized egg. Scientists call it the “amniote” egg because of the protective layers (including the “amnion”) that surround the developing embryo. Reptile eggs were also the first to have a shell to reduce water loss. Depending on the species, reptile egg shells can be soft and leathery or hard. Either way, the shell is an important development that allowed reptiles to cut their ancestral ties to the water.

Incidentally, many species of snakes lay eggs, but there are some that “give live birth.” It turns out that the regional venomous snakes (copperheads and rattlesnakes) are live-bearers. Therefore, you can be sure that if you find snake eggs around your property, they are not from a local venomous species.

Birds took the development of eggs to the next level. All bird eggs have hard, calcified shells, quite often with some amount of color and/or pattern. Like most adapta-

tions of birds, the laying of eggs is as much about reducing body weight as it is about reproduction. Because most birds can fly, it is more advantageous to lay eggs than to carry the extra weight of developing offspring inside the body (as mammals do).

As the egg moves down the reproductive tract of a bird, it picks up the calcified layers that form the shell. Depending on the species, pigments and patterns may be deposited on the egg shell before it is laid.

Such colors and patterns may help camouflage certain types of eggs. This is especially important for ground-nesting birds like the killdeer.

It was, in fact, the egg shell that brought the bald eagle back from the brink of extinction. This was a hard lesson (no pun intended) that taught humans the importance of the connections in nature. Who would have thought that a pesticide intended to control mosquitoes would endanger a bird of prey such as the bald eagle? Decades ago, DDT was sprayed regularly to reduce numbers of mosquitoes. Overspray settled into bodies of water and entered the food chain at the most basic levels. Fish fed on insect larvae, and they in turn were eaten by larger fish. DDT did not break

down in the body of the fish, but rather accumulated in the fatty tissues. Bald eagles feed heavily upon fish, and while the DDT present in their food supply did not always kill the eagles outright, it did have a serious effect on the reproductive system of females. DDT interfered with the ability of the females to produce a hard calcium-rich shell. As a result, the softer eggs were often crushed beneath the weight of nesting birds. This had a profound effect on bald eagle, as well as brown pelican and osprey populations, across the country. Ultimately, the use of DDT was banned in the United States, but other countries continue to use the pesticide.

Eggs have been important to the animal kingdom for hundreds of millions of years, and although there have been modifications through time, it still seems to be the preferred package for developing offspring. Whether soft or shelled, in water or on dry land, from fish to fowl, the egg has endured the eons. yc Dr. Steve Fields is curator of natural history for the Culture and Heritage Museums and a member of the adjunct faculty in the biology departments at Winthrop University and York Technical College.

t is springtime, which means the South Carolina legislature is in session. At the time that I am writing this, the one major piece of legislation that has been passed by both houses and signed by the governor is an abortion bill.

The essence of the bill is that an abortion cannot be done, with exceptions, if there is a detectable fetal heartbeat. The procedure is as follows: An abortion provider who is to perform or induce an abortion, a certified technician, or another agent of the abortion provider who is competent in ultrasonography shall: 1. perform an obstetric ultrasound on the pregnant woman, using whichever method the physician and pregnant woman agree is best under the circumstances; 2. during the performance of the ultrasound, display the ultrasound images so that the pregnant woman may view the images; and 3. record a written medical description of the ultrasound images of the unborn child’s fetal heartbeat, if present and viewable.

Then, the abortion provider is to tell the woman that it may be possible to make the embryonic or fetal heartbeat of the unborn child audible for the pregnant woman to

hear and shall ask the woman if she would like to hear the heartbeat. If the woman would like to hear the heartbeat, then the abortion provider shall, using whichever method the physician and patient agree is best under the circumstances, make the fetal heartbeat of the unborn child audible for the pregnant woman to hear.

If there is a detectable heartbeat, then the abortion cannot be performed unless: 1. the pregnancy is the result of rape, and the probable post-fertilization age of the fetus is fewer than twenty weeks; 2. the pregnancy is the result of incest, and the probable post-fertilization age of the fetus is fewer than twenty weeks; 3. the physician is acting in accordance with Section 44-41-690 (in reasonable medical judgment, the abortion is designed or intended to prevent the death of the pregnant woman or to prevent the serious risk of a substantial and irreversible impairment of a major bodily function of the pregnant woman),or 4. there exists a fetal anomaly, as defined in Section 44-41-430 (a ‘fetal anomaly’ is if in reasonable medical judgment, the unborn child has a profound and irremediable congenital or chromosomal anomaly that, with or without the provision of life-preserving treatment, would be incompatible with sustaining life after birth).

The person who violates the law is guilty of a felony and, upon conviction, must be fined ten thousand dollars, imprisoned not more than two years, or both.

The effective date of the law was Feb. 18, 2021. Suit was immediately filed in U.S. District Court in Columbia by Planned Parenthood South Atlantic and other plaintiffs who provide abortion services in South Carolina. The judge issued a temporary restraining order on Feb. 19, 2021, and after a hearing on March 8, 2021, the judge has taken it “under advisement” but from the comments made at the hearing, the indication seems to be that a more permanent injunction is forthcoming. The judge is quoted as saying at the hearing, “the state’s new anti-abortion law goes against nearly 50 years of U.S. Supreme Court decisions establishing a woman’s constitutional right to abortions up to about 24 week of pregnancy. South Carolina’s new law would only allow abortions up to about six to eight weeks of pregnancy.”

No matter how the judge rules, the case is certainly headed to the U.S. Supreme Court and we will have to stay tuned to see the eventual outcome.

Green reversions of variegated plants

N

owadays, just about every plant species has a variegated form that was propagated from a sport.

Some of the more common ones are several Japanese Euonymus, variegated privet, sunshine privet, variegated Pittosporum and many selections of Abelia, Hydrangea, Weigela, and Loropetalum.

In the world of horticulture, a sport is a chance mutation found on a plant that has desirable traits such as growth habit, leaf color or shape, dwarfness, etc. that is different from the species and that a plant grower deems unique enough to propagate and sell to the public. This involves removing the sport and rooting stem cuttings of that mutation. Often these will be planted and evaluated for several years to see if the

mutation persists and there are no undesirable aspects such as poor growth, sun scorch, pest issues, etc. that may make the mutant less desirable.

One of the most common mutations that leads to new cultivated varieties (cultivars) is leaf variegation. Variegation is where the green pigment chlorophyll is absent in some cells (white) or is masked by other plant pigments such as anthocyanins (red), or xanthocyanins (yellow).

This leads to colorful leaves that add to the ornamental value of the plant. Variegated plants do not occur in nature, because any mutation that would occur, would not persist because the normal green tissue would outgrow the weaker variegated part of the plant so that it would not persist.

Chlorophyll gives plants the ability to convert sunlight energy through photosynthesis into carbohydrates (think sugar) which the plant uses as food to grow and thrive. This means plants with white variegation are not as efficient at making sugars because the leaves contain less chlorophyll.

Often many species with white variegation may scorch if put in too much sun and so they have to be grown in shadier locations which can lead to even less vigor due to less light on top of less chlorophyll.

Mutations that cause variegation are not usually stable, because they are not part of the genetic makeup of the plant. This means the genetic code for the normal growth is there and environmental factors and cultural management practices can

lead to growth of shoots with the normal green growth. Too much shade, high and low temperature extremes, and pruning practices can cause reversions back to the green form. If these reversions are not pruned out they will overgrow the variegated portion of the plant which will eventually disappear. Harsh pruning or regular shearing often lead to reversions back to the green form.

Other mutations often selected for are growth habit or leaf shape or size. A good example of this is the Carissa holly. This Chinese holly cultivar was selected from a sport on a dwarf horned holly which is a genetically dwarf Chinese holly seedling which typically grows to four to six feet.

Get ready for the lawn wars!

Carissa holly reverting back to dwarf horned holly on right and bottom of shrub. leaves and can grow to 20 feet or more in height. The Carissa holly is more compact than the Rotunda holly, and usually only has one spine at the tip of the leaf. If Carissa hollies are heavily pruned or routinely sheared, they will begin reverting to the spiny-leaved form of the Rotunda holly.

So if you have a variegated plant with reversions, you may have to relocate to an area where it receives more sun. Also reduce the urge to constantly shear the

plant. Control the size not by shearing, but by pruning back a wayward stem to an existing side branch down inside the plant. Air & Dust featured at Friday Arts Project

P

utting together an art show that features more than one artist presents numerous questions for an art gallery curator to answer. One of the first is: Do you hang each artist’s work together so that viewers engage first one artist then the other or do you intermingle the pieces throughout, allowing a visual conversation to happen between the pieces of each artist?

In their latest show, “Air & Dust,” Friday Arts Project opted for the latter, choosing to pair each fiber art piece from Charlotte artist Cat Babbie with a painting from Joan Coff, who recently retired from nursing and is now living in Rock Hill after having traveled around the Southwest painting for the past couple of decades.

Fiber arts has been around for a long time, but it is currently enjoying a revival in popularity. “In the spectrum of styles and mediums,” says Babbie “I land in abstract fiber arts. I work with a variety of forms of wool, silk and cotton, everything from tufting to felted sculptures, weaving to sewing. I am currently concentrating on machine-tufting: using a yarn-fed power tool to create wall pillows and soft sculptures with hand-dyed wool.”

The hand-dyed wool is where Babbie’s art truly shines. “The dye pot is where I fell deeply in love with the world of textiles.”

Babbie says. “Dyeing the yarn is as important to me as mixing colors is for a painter.

The colors I look for have variations within each hank of yarn, which increases the textural aspect of the work as well as the visu-

al interest. I can create subtleties that are impossible to recreate using commercially dyed yarns.”

If the colors don’t draw you in, certainly the textures will, she says. “The tufts are soft, combining subtle color shifts to the undulating texture of yarn. When hung on the wall, the pieces soften the space, and invite the viewers to come closer. Their textures are intriguing. It’s my favorite part of working with textiles: creating work that draws people in, enticing them to interact directly with the fibers.”

The pieces in Friday Arts Project’s Courtroom Gallery are part of her latest body of work: “Skyscapes.” “Skyscapes” is inspired by how colors and shapes in the sky are affected by changes in time and

weather.

The other body of work in this visual conversation, “Where the Earth Meets the Sky,” is a collection of paintings from Joan Coff’s time living in New Mexico.

“They say you can see the bones of the earth; they say you can feel the ancestors,” says Coff. “The sense of distance is what I noticed the most, the wideopen spaces, the huge sky. I am aware of my smallness. And yes, the light, the amazing light that has called artists for decades.”

Using light, a warm color palate and bold lines Coff shares that sense of vastness with her viewers. It’s very easy to imagine yourself in one of her paintings staring up at the monstrous structures in front of you, whether they are naturally

formed or man-made.

Together, the art from these two artists have a “visual dialogue of textual divergence,” to quote Friday Arts Project’s description of the duo’s show. “Cat Babbie’s abstractions of cool humidity in fiber art and Joan Coff’s bright strokes of warm southwestern scenes in paint — perhaps visceral enough for you to feel the air and dust on your skin.”

The show is up in the Courtroom Gallery (located on the second floor of the Gettys Art Center on Main Street in Rock Hill) until April 22, with an in-person reception on

April 8. Friday Arts Project is asking anyone interested in coming to the reception to go to their website to sign up for one of the 30 minute time slots in order to keep the gallery from becoming too crowded.

There is light at the end of this pandemic tunnel, but we’re not quite at the end yet.

Strength in numbers, creating a photo series

I

n January of this year, I critiqued photos for a photography club competition.

I’ve juried competitions and conducted critiques many times over the years, but this particular critique was the first I’ve conducted via a Zoom meeting. With several of the photos in this critique, I needed to ask what the subject of the photo was or why the photo had been created. Multiple photographers in that online critique could only answer something along the lines of, “I don’t know, I just liked it”, or “Because I was there.” Even though they had created the image, even to their own eye, there was no distinct subject.

Taking a photo just because you like what’s in front of you or to preserve a memory are both valid reasons to take a shot. It does become an issue when displaying, to others, images that are without a clear subject or clear intent. If the photographer didn’t know what the subject of the photo was, a viewer certainly can’t be expected to discern a photographic subject or the photographer’s intent. In case of the critique photos I’ve mentioned, they were not bad photos, they were simply weak in getting any information across to a viewer unattached by an experience or sentiment to those particular photos. Every day, I see

those types of photos in folk’s social media feeds and even in some photography portfolios; lots of disjointed, unattached photos, some are strong photos, some, not so much. Hey, sometimes, I’m guilty of that myself. The truth is, sometimes we simply end up with photos that we love, but to others, they’re just, “meh”. A potential way to strengthen a weak image is to group them into a series of images.

In a group of images, one image is just part of a the whole, the series. The individual photos are bit players, the series is the creation. If an image is weak or wouldn’t stand alone on its own merits, perhaps,

putting similar images together gives viewers more visual information in which to discern the photographer’s intent. Now, of course, you can’t just throw a bunch of photos together and call it a day. For a photographic series to work, images must be connected to one another. That connection could be the subject matter, the color palette, a particular photography technique, a style of post-production or any number of other choices made by the photographer.

Just as a photo title or caption can help a viewer interpret the story or elements of an image, a photo series can help guide viewers in the same manner.

On a trip to the Azores, the author was struck by the fact that every house had a clothesline, inspiring him to tell a visual story shooting a series of photos of these clotheslines.

The potential themes for a photo series are endless, but there are a few things to do that will help to make a photo series successful. The first thing is to determine what your series theme will be. Will the theme be the color red? Odd numbers?

The Alphabet? Fast cars? Old folks? Whatever you determine to be the theme, the next thing to do is to clearly define that theme. Will your photos be a metaphor or an analogy or will your photos be a literal interpretation of the theme? If this will be your first attempt at creating a photo series, interpreting the theme literally may be the easiest to accomplish. Once you’re shooting for the series, I recommend being very consistent in your shooting style.

While not true for every potential photo series, it can be important to be very consistent with shooting angles, compositions, and framing. Creating a photo series is about making overt connections between the individual photos. And lastly, as stated earlier, the collection of the images is the creation. So, stayed focused on creating the whole and don’t get caught up on the merits of individual images; at least not yet. I normally cull or delete images ruthlessly, but if shooting for a series, I tend to hold onto images longer. Putting together a series is much like putting together a picture puzzle and that deleted image may have been the one image I needed.

I’ll leave you with an example of a series that I created. On a past vacation, I visited Terceira Island in the Azores Archipelago, which is off of the coast of Portugal. This was not a “photocation”, I had no preconceived photo goals for the trip. I took one digital camera, one film camera, and two lenses that would work for both cameras.

I spent most of the trip walking the beautiful cities and the countryside. One scene that stood out to me was the ubiquitous clotheslines. It seemed that at almost every home, no matter if it was the most humble or the most ornate of homes, there was a clothesline. I began to hunt the clotheslines, and I came away with many, many

photos of said clotheslines. Are those shots masterpieces? Nope. But together they tell a travelogue of one aspect of my trip. There is no doubt what I want the viewer to see and experience. The pursuit of equity

T

he past year has been incredibly challenging for our nation, shining a spotlight on the tremendously difficult race and equity issues across our country. For too long, inequity, violence, and racism have been allowed to go unchecked, violating the lives of people of color.

The present-day reality in the United States is that historical, persistent patterns of structural and institutional discrimination and implicit bias based on race/ethnicity, gender, and other identities have created lasting inequities.

We know from the data that COVID-19 has affected our communities of color harder than others. While this pandemic has shed light on inequity, these inequities are not new. Lack of access to healthcare, educational disparities, and workforce barriers in communities of color are symptoms of the social and economic realities born of historical and systematic racism.

We know many of us have experienced several emotions over the past few months.

Members of our community have shared that they want to do something about these issues but do not know how to make a difference. At United Way of York County, we know we must act and help the community act. But how we act matters.

We believe that we must listen to those who have been harmed and affected by systems working against them. Our United Way strives to engage community members, especially those whose voices have traditionally been marginalized.

United Way of York County recognizes that improving the lives of everyone in the communities we serve means we must explicitly focus on removing these barriers for those most harmed by them. But we cannot do this work alone.

We have formed an Equity Taskforce of esteemed professionals Robert Mackey, Stacey Moore, April Simpkins, Nikki Pounds, Breonica Robinson, Maria Ruth, and Roo George-Warren. Our Equity Taskforce has hit the ground running to

create opportunities and explore ways to build a more equitable community.

The Taskforce is exploring how we partner with organizations and individuals in the community to lead diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts successfully. The Taskforce and United Way will leverage our abilities to strategically provide business and community leaders opportunities to invest their resources for a more equitable community.

• We will only partner with and fund organizations that align with our racial equity values.

• We will use data to ensure we impact communities of color and marginalized communities.

• We will provide equity training for UWYC staff, Board, and community

• We will solicit expertise outside of our United Way to provide the strategies, best practices, and success measures to create more equitable communities and remove disparities wherever they exist.

Our collective future requires that all of us — as individuals, families, neighborhoods, faith communities, small businesses, large companies, schools, and governments — commit to fighting racism and inequities in all its forms. We, as a society, can and must do better to guarantee that the basic human rights and freedoms of every person in every community are protected.

Connections Helping Hands

Staying positive in the time of a pandemic

F

or a few days last week, I volunteered at the COVID Vaccination Clinic inside the Galleria Mall in Rock Hill. I wasn’t sure what to expect, turning an old storefront into a medical facility, but I have to give them props, they did a fabulous job. I’m sure it took some time to work the kinks out, but from what I saw, they have it rocking. The lines stay moving, the workers are friendly, most of the clients are friendly, and people are getting vaccinated against this ugly virus.

While I was there, the 1b Phase began and we started seeing educators in massive numbers. All types of school employees - teachers, administrators, board members, custodians, food service workers – we signed them up, popped the vaccine in their arms, and sent them back to work. My job involved signing them into the VAMS system and marking them as a walk-in appointment before handing them a clipboard of forms and sending them on to Step 2. So, I would guess I saw a few hundred school faculty and staff members over the two days I volunteered. Most were happy to be getting their shot; one person said she cried when she found out she could get vaccinated.

I’m one of those chatty people, asking what grade they taught or what subject, which school, etc. They would answer and I would say something along the lines of, “Middle school! Bless you, I’m not sure how you do it!” or “High school! Oh gracious, that sounds like it would be rough!” You know, the general small talk. Some folks didn’t really respond, but most did, and the answers surprised me. Most teachers and staff were totally positive about their jobs. Even in a year of uncertainty with tons of change, stress, and this pandemic, they were still positive. Talking between themselves when they didn’t have anyone to present a front to, they still were joyous about their jobs.

There wasn’t one type of person that was more enthusiastic than the other, either. I mean, you’d think the cute little elementary school kids might be easier to feel all warm and fuzzy about teaching. But nope, the middle school teachers were just as encouraging about their students, the high school teachers shared how much they enjoyed teaching their students, custodi-

ans and cafeteria workers were smiling and happy to serve students. It was across the board an amazing experience, volunteering at the COVID Vaccine Clinic, and seeing this positive attitude from so many made it even more outstanding.

I think we have a tendency to sometimes forget that others we come in contact with are people, too. They experience life, just like we do, and they go to work and have to function there, just like we do. Teachers

included. School staff included. They have parents and some of those parents are aging with issues. They have spouses and some of those spouses have medical issues or the marriages have issues. They have children and some of those children have medical issues or learning disabilities or emotional concerns. They lose family and friends, mourn, and learn to cope with the loss. They worry about coming home with COVID and spreading it to their family.

And yet, when I said, “Middle School!

Bless you, I’m not sure how you do it!” or “High School! Oh gracious, that sounds like it would be rough!” they responded with something along the lines of, “no, I like it. I’ve been teaching (xx) amount of years and I really enjoy it. I could have retired a few years ago, but I just didn’t want to stop yet.” And so on… you get the picture. They enjoy their job, like helping your kid learn and watching your kid grow.

Even with all the craziness of totally switching up their normal work life from having classes in person to going virtual and dropping everything to learn new technology and a new method of teaching. Even with the stress of brainstorming new ways to ensure students have access to food and technology to learn. Even with new cleaning and disinfecting protocols in place after every class. Even with the challenge of talking through a mask for eight hours and trying to engage a sea of eyeballs when they can’t see the smiles. Even with kids who don’t want to wear masks in school, but don’t want to go virtual and stay home, so the teacher is left to try and enforce a mask rule. Even with some parents not backing them. Even with some fellow teachers not backing them. They still love their job, the students, the impact they know they have, the difference they know they are making, and the love they see coming back to them from students who need them.

I’m taking this moment to say thanks to these men and women. They have been troopers through all this. Leaders, really, showing us it can be done. Because they did it. They turned the education boat around on a dime and totally shifted gears so fast everyone’s heads were spinning. But they persevered, they were successful, and at the end of the weary road they are travelling, they still love their job and love their students. They want them to learn and they want them to stay safe. They know the weight they have on their shoulders is massive, but they step up every day and do it anyway. And love it. Turn And Fade

Wife’s got game. Does yours?

T

he other Sunday, as I watched my wife confidently spin drives down the fairway and sink several tricky putts at the Camp Canaan Sandhills Course, it dawned on me that she had officially become a disc golfer. And I could not have been prouder.

My wife and I have been playing disc golf since the early days of our relationship in 2010. In fact, disc golf was featured in our first date, which always brings up a laugh from her because I managed to break a tree branch with my head as I “suavely” demonstrated disc golf for her.

However, my wife and disc golf were not the fast friends that I had hoped for.

Her progression with the sport has largely been a gradual one. You see, athletics for my wife have never been a priority. She dabbled in a few sporting activities in her youth, but I think she always knew her passions lie elsewhere. She’s a natural born horticulturist. It’s easy to see in the way she interacts with nature. Even now when we play together, she is easily distracted by the natural wonders making up the course.

To her, a beautiful fungus on the ground is just as fascinating as a sweet sidearm shot to the green.

Starting out cool

When it came to playing disc golf, I think my wife (she was my girlfriend at that point) was genuinely curious to try this game that I constantly talked about.

And I love her for that. But I love her even more for continuing to play even when she knew the round would be a struggle.

And yes, there were plenty of struggles. I remember more than once seeing her griplock a driver into a neighboring backyard or other out-of-bounds fence. I remember lost discs, groans, disappointments and of course, that severely pissed-off look that said, “Don’t even think about offering me another throwing tip.”

Part of the problem was that we didn’t play consistently enough. To get good, you must play a lot and we just didn’t do that.

I wanted her to love disc golf, but I didn’t want to force it upon her. So, we played when we both felt like it, which was every few weeks or so. Which worked pretty well because, let’s face it, disc golf isn’t the only thing to do when you are living in Charlotte without any kids. Beer festival anyone?

Unfortunately, by the time we got back to the course, the skills she’d learned the last time weren’t exactly fresh on her mind.

Many times, it felt like she was starting over each time we played.

But I don’t fault her for that. She didn’t take up disc golf to become the next Paige Pierce. She did it to spend time with me.

And during that time no matter how frequent or infrequent, she tried to do the best she could. Even after embarrassing rounds, she still kept coming out to the course with me. Sometimes it took a little more convincing than others, but she still came.

Glimmers of hope

Little by little things started to stick.

Terms like “hyzer” and “turnover” transitioned from a foreign language to actual useful disc golf lingo. She learned the “X” step for her drive and began to understand the flight differences of her discs.

There were more moments of dazzling drives through the woods and exciting putts from far away. And it was these moments that I hoped stayed with her and inspired her to play more – because most often those glorious moments were brief and sandwiched in between confusing bouts of uncontrolled shots and putts. Sadly, there was more than one occasion when we’d leave the course and I saw no love for the game in her eyes.

However, she kept playing. Part of that was probably a sense of obligation to her man. But she was also gradually finding her way and I could see she was finding enjoyment in that.

After we got married and had our son, these trips to the course became a much-needed trip out of the house for both of us. When we moved to Rock Hill, she eventually joined a small women’s league.

And it was there she saw other similarly skilled women and realized she was better than she thought. Friendships were made and my wife would come home with stories of CTP (closest to the pin) prizes and great performances. She was one of the most diligent league participants until COVID-19 struck and our family felt the need to hunker down to protect ourselves.

Socially Distanced Activities — A bright side for my wife’s disc golf progression

Though COVID ended my wife’s participation in her women’s disc golf league (at

by Kirk Covington least for the time being), the need for activities outside the house ramped up our family rounds to one per week, especially with our 4-year-old son being able to walk for nine holes (with the occasional ride on daddy’s shoulders). It was then that things started to really click for my wife.

Techniques that I had been explaining to her for years were sinking in and becoming second nature. And that as well as all the effort she had put into her disc golf game over the years led to the other Sunday at Canaan:

Super Sunday

Right away, I knew something was happening at the Camp Canaan Sandhills Course. On the first hole she delivered a solid straight drive and wasted no time collecting her birdie with a clutch putt. The very next hole, a hole she’s struggled to maneuver past the steep uphill ascent, she threw her best drive ever on that hole and later canned a tricky putt for another bird.

For the first time in my memory, she was on a disc golf hot streak. A few holes later, she lasered her Mamba for a park job and another birdie.

Watching her make those great shots with the form we’ve been working on for years, I was taken aback. The confidence.

The commitment to the shot. The follow through. It was all there.

My wife had some missteps later in the round and she cooled off toward the end, but this was by far the most complete

round I’d ever seen her play. It was a day I’d been waiting for, for a long time.

To get to this point was not easy for her.

I would have understood if she quit the sport many years ago. I would have even been satisfied if she remained at the beginner skill level forever. But she kept at it and has become a bonafide disc golfer and one I’m proud to call my wife.

Bring your wife / girlfriend disc golfing

I encourage every disc golfer to bring their significant other regularly to play.

Even if it cuts down the time you play with your friends, it’s worth it. I will never forget the look of accomplishment on my wife’s face after each amazing shot. Disc golf is fun. Give her a chance to love it too.

Next up: disc golf events for the family

I have a dream of my wife, my son, and me all traveling to play in the same disc golf tournaments. I can see it now, each one of us winning our respective divisions then telling each other all about the great shots we made over BBQ ribs and milehigh chocolate pie.

Of course, that’s a long shot. Right now, the playground and, let’s face it, mud puddles, are a bigger draw for my son than the course. So, if our family disc golf adventures don’t happen, it’ll be ok. I’ll still enjoy moments like the other day at Canaan. yc Todd Harrell plays disc golf, among other things.

Tuning In To York County

C’ers and music fans everywhere were saddened by the passing of the beloved Tin Man February 30.

Though Tin is best remembered for playing himself in the 1939 blockbuster “The Wizard of Oz,” Tin’s first love was music, and he pursued his passion on Tin Pan Alley in Nashville, Tinnessee before

discovering, alas, what everyone else knew all along — that he had a tin ear.

Nonetheless, Tin was able to fashion a modest musical career, having Top Tin hits with covers of tunes such as Elvis Presley’s “Love me Tinder,” Otis Redding’s “Try a Little Tinderness,” and Jackson Browne’s “Tinder is the Night.” Tin’s career suffered in the 1980’s, though, as young people abandoned Tin’s light metal format in favor of heavy metal music. Tin said he never was much on heavy metal music, as all that head banging made his face resonate.

Tin found great success on stage and screen, though, having major roles in blockbusters such as The Tin Commandments and Tin Little Indians. Tin even had one of two title roles in 1958’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof. On the downside, one of Tin’s greatest disappointments was losing out to Bo Derek in the starring role in the 1979 movie Tin. Immortalized in song in America’s 1974 hit song

“Tin Man,” Tin acknowledged that Oz never did give nothing to him that he didn’t already have, while neither confirming nor denying that “cause never was the reason for the evening or the tropic of Sir Galahad.” Tin said he did enjoy spinning round, round, round, round, though.

Tin suffered from a variety of chronic illnesses, including tinnitus, tindonitis, tinnis elbow, and oxidation. An investigation into the cause of Tin’s death, however, revealed that the clock heart the Wizard gave Tin finally wore out.

Yes, Tin had a bum ticker.

Tin Man is survived by several distant cousins on his father’s side, including Super Man, Bat Man, Iron Man, Aqua Man, Spider Man, Dustin Hoff Man, Pee Wee Her Man, John Good Man, and The Man in the Moon. In death, Tin showed concern for others by being an organ donor. Tin’s final gift will benefit many Western York Countyians for years through the Hickory Grove Cannery.

Steve Moore: a man of many talents

f you have been following this column for a while, you’ve seen my main focus has been on drivers and race teams here in York County. This month we look at Steve Moore of Rock Hill and his many paths taken in his life so far.

The first path in his life was, like most in the area, cars, more specifically, race cars.

At an early age, Steve was exposed to drag racing through his dad. Oval racing was also part of his life as he also worked for Buck Baker. So, Steve’s first path was almost a given, racing of some sort. And like many of us, he caught that bug full time while in high school, street racing. Now I know that’s frowned upon, but that was life, and for many, how you learned to be competitive. Come the late ‘70s to around 1980, Moore had his own drag car and became somewhat legit, keeping his racPAGE 22

ing on the track, but never forgetting his friends and whoever wanted to race on a street someplace.

In the early ‘90s, his attention turned to oval racing, as in go-carts. Starting out first on asphalt, Steve only competed twice and quickly saw the paved road was only good for getting to a dirt track and having a heck of a lot more fun. In 1995/96, Steve ran in the SC Dirt Series, and like so many today who race, this was a complete family affair.

His wife, Darlene, daughter, and brother-in-law were part of his crew wherever he went. And while he was having a great time, age was catching up to him, especially running against kids with nerves of steel.

Time for that next path in life.

Always a gear head, Steve picked up a 1968 Chevy step side pickup. Now, some of the skills he had learned kicked in. The

truck was completely disassembled, the term used is a frame off-build. Virtually every piece was cleaned or replaced, some even being rebuilt in his shop. Not being able to afford that final step, paint, Moore built a paint booth and applied the paint.

The flawless finish was and still is to this day outstanding. This truck was not and never has been on a trailer, it’s driven. He and Darlene have put a lot of miles on that show piece, even raced it on an Autocross course. And, yup, she also drives to and from car shows around the Southeast. We now come to 2000 and a somewhat tired 1969 Camaro Another complete tear down is in order. The body, taken to bare metal, was smoothed and brought to his better-than-factory standards. Now, instead of using stock factory parts on the sus-

pension, and wanting to also race the car, he installed racing parts to make the car handle better in tight turns, so much a part of Autocross racing. Also wanting the power for the straights, a 454 CI engine was used, giving him all the power he could use. When finished, Steve also painted the flawless body to show car standards. Most normal guys would never take a chance racing a show car, but that’s not what happened, as can be seen by the many show and race awards on the shelves. And like the truck, its driven, and not on a trailer.

And who was his biggest supporter and his pit crew, Darlene. “She has always been my biggest supporter in whatever I have ever done, I could not do what I have done, and wouldn’t do it without her 100% support.”

Next comes another phase in the Moore household. Having always loved anything to do with motor sports and with no hobbies to speak of, he decided to try photographing racing. Buying the necessary equipment, I would consider Steve a world class motor sports photographer. Anyone can buy the best camera out there, but without an eye and quick shutter finger, you’ve gone and wasted money. Steve on the other and knows where to stand, what angle is best for catching the action shot, and is considered one of the best around.

Add that to his landscape shots, capturing wildlife at the right moment, wherever he points his lens, Steve Moore is right up there with the best professionals in the business, even though this is just a hobby for him. And just like his racing and attending car shows, his photography is a family thing.

I know this was a little out of the way from my usual columns, but Steve is a highly talented Rock Hill resident whom more people should get to know. I first met Steve when he attended my CWP course, and I had no idea who he was or what he did. What a pleasure to get to know him, see him at the track snapping some of the best action photos I have seen, and once again, meeting yet another great family from York County. yc Stu Lord is a former NASCAR track manager, writer and talk show host living in York. Working Within

The power of pause

A

trailer to the previous article of “Being Still…” It appears that things are somewhat settling down in our country… yes, we have ways to go in a lot of the different parts of our culture (i.e., economy, employment, COVID-19/Vaccination, and etc.). Conflicts, confrontations, and unrest appear to be with us for a long period in relation to the events of our times. I hear/feel/see the fatigue, frustration, emotional unrest, etc. in relation to the impact of COVID-19.

I have had an influx of individuals who are struggling with pre-existing mental health challenges/issues. It appears many are reverting to their old habits, patterns, behaviors, etc. “Old wiring” or reflexes/reactions or being on auto pilot is re-emerging in a lot of relationships, conditions, events, and etc. Impulsivity, spontaneous responses, replies, or simply doing or saying things without thought (rational, reasonable, and/or “wise” mind) are some examples of reflexes/reactions.

You may have read/heard many times life is not what happens to you, it’s how you handle what happens to you. Another thought I might have you to ponder with me is that often the “what” (such as COVID-19 and other life circumstances) has no feelings/emotions, intentions, value/belief, etc. Simply the “what” is neutral in how it approaches life, meaning it is unable to search or target you. As many have stated, “life happens.”

During the transition to stability (or somewhat “normal”), I would like to suggest a technique called the “Power of Pause.” If you dissect the two relatively simple words – Power and Pause, they are ingredients for empowerment, choice, effectiveness and so much more. Power is defined as “ability to do or act; capability of doing or accomplishing something,” thus, it provides us an opportunity to choose on an ability to behave in an effective way.

Therefore, we have a choice to “think before we say/do/act (often related to discipline, delayed gratification, patience, endurance, and etc.).” Pause on the other hand is defined as “a temporary stop or rest, especially in speech or action,” thus, it would provide us a moment to think through the events, relationships, communications, and etc. prior to be or to being.

Do you know we can process (our brain) approximately 400 words per minute and we average even on a positive day 130

depositphotos.com words per minute? Thus, we have a lot of time (relatively) in our “brain” to process the data/information/situation. Providing permission to think will “save” you from being/be negative. Put the two words together and we may find an effective way to communicate and/or to act, especially in “heated” tense moments (i.e., relationships, conflicts/confrontations, and etc.).

Furthermore, there are many benefits to the “Power of Pause” such as: Discipline (or delayed gratification): we live in a society/culture of “here and now” – immediate gratification. I remember (in the good old days) having to pull the Encyclopedia to look up facts (which were often several years out of date) and now we “Google.” Microwaves, McDonalds, medications, and other ways to “cut corners” has been our current lifestyle. Hence, the reason we act and then we think.

Patience: defined as “an ability or willingness to suppress restlessness or annoyance when confronted with delay” is very difficult for a culture that desires things relatively quick. Hence, the reason we have spontaneous moments (i.e., “road rage,” inappropriate statements or actions, and etc.) that often end in dysfunction/destruction.

Opportunities: if we can process 400 words per minute, think about how much time you would be able to provide words of encouragement, solve problems effectively, find ways/options (vs add “fuel to the fire,” emotionally/psychologically).

Choice: to be able to choose on how to respond or react to situations and/or relationships, especially, if they are heated, tense, conflict/confrontational, and etc.

Ponder with me, any one can reflex/react… the strength is to choose.

Respect: defined as “esteem for or a sense of the worth or excellence of a person, a personal quality or ability” – the

technique of pausing would provide an opportunity to value/worth/cherish the individual due to conveying the ability to “listen” or being silent (vs being reactive).

Utilizing the time would provide you an opportunity to practice the skill of “This is what I hear you say…”

Therefore, the “Power of Pause” has many benefits/dividends as the following quotes would convey:

Writing coaches can help in many ways

M

ore people are writing since the pandemic changed our lives more than a year ago.

You know that writing can free your mind to heal and be creative, but even with a purpose in mind, writers face obstacles.

For the next couple of months, this column will focus on what a writing coach does, how she can help you in writing and publishing and where to find a qualified coach who meets your needs.

What is a writing coach?

A writing coach serves as a mentor, trainer and motivator for writers at all levels. A writing coach can be compared to a sports coach. She learns her client’s purpose and assesses the writer’s skill. Then she analyzes how to best impart to each client fundamentals and advanced skills.

Personal writing coaches are often published authors or editors. Writing coach services can include complementary services but not always.

Writing coaches specialize in one or more kinds of writing, from different book genres to marketing copy or screenplays.

Others focus on blog writing or journal-

ing. Whether a writing coach online or in person, your guide empowers you to write whatever you desire. Like editors, most practice within a specific niche.

Generally, writing coaches work with individual writers who want to publish online, write a book or improve their writing for a specific purpose.

Who needs a writing coach?

This month, we’ll look at four of at least ten reasons writers seek out coaches.

Writing coaches have experienced most of the challenges you face. Because they have written and/or edited, they know the challenges of time constraints, lost momentum and writing against a deadline.

Below are several ways writing coaches can empower writers. Which ones apply to you?

1. You fear your writing isn’t good enough All writers, even best-selling authors, hear their inner critic challenge the value of their writing. They think others will find their writing dumb, boring, or not as good as before.

Even with those hopes, you might feel stymied because you don’t know what to do next. Maybe you’re not sure how to get started. (Here’s a secret: If you’re writing, you’ve taken at least the first step! Reading this column is a strong next step.)

Perhaps you have so many creative ideas that you don’t know where to begin.

A writing coach can assess your passion, your consistency and your motivation.

Then she can work with you to deter-

You could be among the many writers who have a general idea for your project but don’t know how to proceed, make connections or publish.

4. You want help determining your purpose.

Frequently, writers’ ideas, stories, plots and characters come from personal experience.

The immediate inclination for many is to pen a memoir or autobiography.

Your writing coach can assist you in finding clarity about why you are writing fiction or nonfiction and for whom.

Your coach will be able to determine whether your message is best shared as a memoir, how-to book, creative nonfiction book or as a series of blog or social media posts.

If you’re writing fiction, she can help you find your genre and niche, structure your arcs, and create your plot and subplots.

How is a coach different from knowledgeable friends?

Your friends like you, so they might not be as forthcoming with their thoughts or advice. If they do deliver honest feedback, they likely don’t have the experience of a writing coach.

As coach is an objective observer who hears all you say about your work. She can determine how you can tell your story, write your novel or share your message effectively.

Supermoons are bright, but not so super

A

supermoon occurs when a full moon is near a point in its orbit when it is closer than average to Earth. The moon doesn’t orbit Earth in a perfect circle, but in an ellipse. The closest point in its orbit is called perigee, and a full moon near perigee is a supermoon. A supermoon is both slightly bigger and brighter than an average full moon. Despite being a popular term in use by the general public, “supermoon” does not have a scientific definition.

Fred Espenak, the retired astrophysicist known as Mr. Eclipse, defines a supermoon as a full moon being within 90% of its closest approach to Earth, or within a distance of 228,420 miles. (The average distance between Earth and Moon is 238,855 miles.) By this definition, 2021 will feature four supermoons, all in a row, on March 28, April 27, May 26, and June 24. Other people’s definitions are stricter, with March’s full moon being too far away from Earth to count. The supermoon of May will be the biggest and brightest full moon of the year, but more about that moon later in this article. With fully one third (or one fourth) of this year’s full moons being called supermoons, one could argue that they are not very super after all.

The full moon in April each year is sometimes known as the Pink Moon because phlox, a plant which often has pink flowers, blooms around this time in the northern United States. The April 27 supermoon at its closest will be 226,000 miles from us. The April full moon occurs at 03:33 UTC, or 3:33 am in Greenwich, England, which is actually 11:33 pm EDT the night before, April 26, for us in the eastern United States. The full moon always rises around sunset and sets near sunrise, as it is opposite the Sun. When the moon is full and low in the sky, it looks huge, or at least it does to the vast majority of people, myself included. That is called the Moon Illusion. If you take your pinky finger, hold it up at arm’s length, close one eye, and try to cover the moon with your finger, you will see that you always can. Yes, a supermoon is larger than usual, but only by a little. Most of the largeness you might observe is just an illusion, a trick

It is said that the full moon low in the sky appears smaller when viewed upside down, but I have never actually tried that. Occasionally a full moon near the horizon will appear reddish because of particles in Earth’s atmosphere, such as from smoke or pollution or from an active volcano somewhere in the world. So, the Pink Supermoon may just appear to be both larger and more pinkish than usual.

The full moon of May is sometimes called the Flower Moon, so this May 26 brings a Super Flower Moon. This year, May’s full moon will occur at 11:14 UTC, or 7:14 am EDT here in the Carolinas.

The full moon sets near sunrise, remem-

ber, so if you go outside shortly before then, you will see the largest full moon of 2021.

Besides being a full moon, a supermoon, and a flower moon, the moon will also be in total lunar eclipse on May 26.

That happens when the moon, the sun and Earth are so precisely aligned that the Moon passes into Earth’s shadow, dims, and turns reddish. The moon’s exact color can vary, although popular culture has been calling them “blood moons” in recent years.

The partial eclipse begins that morning at 5:44 am EDT, when the first hint of Earth’s shadow will start to cover the moon. In the Carolina Piedmont, the

moon sets at 6:16 am EDT, about an hour before totality begins. So while we can technically see the first half hour of a partial lunar eclipse on May 26 before the moon sets, we won’t see any of totality. It is a much better show for those out west. If you have friends along the West Coast, tell them that if weather cooperates they can see the Super Blood Flower Moon early that morning. yc Carole Holmberg is the Planetarium Manager at the Museum of York County. Religious observances include church services, tithes, and offerings. hoes are one of those things you never really think about until your current pair are falling apart and there’s not a chance of them walking a mile more.... well, that’s how I think about shoes. Both my brother and my wife feel very differently and think about shoes for approximately 60% of the day, so maybe I’m the odd one out. When I found myself in need of a new pair of light hiking/trail running shoes a few months ago, I ended up doing some research and apparently there are several debates raging right now around shoes, how they’re designed, and how we’ve been doing them wrong for the last 75 years. Let’s take a quick walk down the theory of athletic footwear and how it keeps changing.

First, a quick primer on the evolution of shoes. I’m going to make an educated guess that way back when, someone who had never seen or thought of a shoe, stepped on something pointy and thought, “I don’t like that. How can I make that not happen again?” and a very basic form of sandals were born. The oldest example of shoes is actually the Fort Rock sandals, dating to 9000 years old and are basically the same woven rope sandals you’ll find on aging hippies today. The shoes were flat, had very little cushion to speak of, but would protect you from sharp rocks and thorns. While there were variations on that original principle, wooden boards as a sole, strapping and laces that ran up the leg, fur for warmth, etc. the basic structure of shoes remained unchanged for common PAGE 28

people until the industrial revolution. At that point, mass production of footwear made a wider variety of footwear accessible to the common person, and as we continued the march of progress, we began adding things like rubber soles for grip, foam midsoles for comfort, and steel shanks for load bearing stiffness.

The person most responsible for changing athletic footwear in the 20th century is Bill Bowerman, who in 1964 helped start a little company called Nike. By simply sticking a hunk of rubber into his wife’s waffle iron, he ignited a revolution in footwear.

This kickstarted the athletic shoe craze, and like many things associated with fast progress, the reach of designers exceeded their grasp. In an attempt to make more comfortable running shoes, a trend developed of elevating the heel above the forefoot to pack in as much foam as possible in an attempt to cushion the runner during the impact of them landing during their gait and then allow the lower forefoot to roll forward to propel you into your next stride. This has been the landscape for the last few decades, and that same design philosophy has affected tennis shoes, running shoes, and hiking boots.

In 2005 though, the most commercially successful rejection of those design trends came to market as the Vibram Five Finger shoes. Basically, a rubber glove for your feet, they were a rubber sole wrapped around your foot and each individual toe, and everyone looked at you a little strange

for wearing them. What people found out quickly though is that wearing them the first few times...hurt. A lot. Not even running or hiking with heavy loads, just wearing them on a walk around the neighborhood was taxing on muscles that your feet simply don’t use when swaddled in the cushioned boats that are the majority of shoes. There’s always been a debate, of which I am not qualified to weigh in at all, of what makes the elite marathoners hailing from Africa so much better than all of their competitors; one of the arguments is that they run barefoot, which gives them a level of strength and injury resistance that are unparalleled by Western runners who’ve babied their feet their entire lives.

In addition, there is anecdotal evidence that by running without cushion, you don’t overextend your stride, (allowing the heel of your foot to hit first), which can cause all sorts of problems with knees and hips in addition to your feet.

With all of this in mind, I’ve been wearing a pair of Altra Lone Peak trail runners for the last few months and this may sound crazy, but they are changing the way I move my feet through this world. I like Altras in that they provide you a smidgen of cushion, but they have their “Zero Drop” footbed that ensures your heel is at the same level as the ball of your foot. I found very quickly it became awkward, and even painful, to keep the same heel first stride I’ve maintained my entire life and rather quickly adopted a more flat-footed, even

toe-first stride. It took a few weeks of wearing them while running errands or working around the house to get my feet used to them, but now I’ve taken them hiking for multiple miles, and even when carrying a load, they’ve held up great. Their large toe box also allows my foot to spread out properly, something I didn’t realize I had never been able to do in some of my other shoes.

While there’s muscular fatigue like at the end of every hike, some of the chronic joint pain in my knees and hips have been alleviated which is encouraging.

So next time you go to buy a pair of shoes, do a bit of research. Go to a specialty store and talk to someone who really knows their stuff and pick their brain about problems that you’re having and if there’s anything you can do to make it better. I didn’t even touch subjects like supination or pronation of your feet, flat arches or high arches, or chronic conditions like plantar fasciitis, all of which require an experienced shoe fitter to help with — and, no, all of those reviews on Zappos.com are not the same thing and don’t count. yc Cameron Shook is an avid outdoors enthusiast who has more outdoor experience than most people twice his age. What humans do that dogs hate: Part 2

I

wanted to devote a couple of articles into a continuation of last month’s topic. The topic is things that humans do that dogs do not like. Not every item on my list will necessarily apply to each dog; your dog may also be able to deal with it better than others. I created my list to share so you and your family have a better understanding as to why you your dog reacts a certain way in situations. You may learn a few things you didn’t know and share them with your friends. This helps set our dogs up in our community for success and less problematic behavior issues in the future.

First….

Dogs do not understand most of what you are saying; they are reacting more to your tone and body language combined.

Try using a simple hand signal for commands, (different ones for each command) such as “Come, Sit, Down, Enough” and “Stay.” Dogs respond so well to visual cues.

Slowly start to incorporate the hand signals with the command, such as “Sit.” This will allow your dog to start to pair the hand signal with “Sit.” After some fun, short, consistent practice exercises, you will then be able to fade out the verbal command and only use a hand signal. Hand signals are also beneficial for aging dogs and dogs losing their hearing, those who participate in dog sports, and it’s also a great additional way to communicate with your dog that your canine companion prefers.

Next….

Most dogs do not like when humans repeat themselves too much. When you’re working with your dog on your commands and you tell your dog to “Sit”, you only need to say it once, twice, three times max. If you are still not getting a response, change your approach. Redirect and try in another location. Have patience, keep it fun, short, sweet, consistent and positive. Repeating a command over, and over and over without any direction will cause your dog to ignore you really quickly, plus it’s annoying to everyone in earshot. Say it once with your hand signal and hold your hand signal still until you get your result. Give your dog the opportunity to think on his own for a moment. Give him the opportunity to respond. Give him a chance. Remember, if you are not getting the result you want, change your approach and technique. Ev-

ery single dog is different, so one approach will not necessarily work for every dog.

Also…

Most dogs do not like when humans use strong cleaning products or deodorizers in their home. Sixty percent of a dog’s brain is controlled by the nose. Chemicals such as bleach, vinegar and perfume send their senses into overload and it can be very irritating to their sensitive noses. Try to purchase products that are baby or pet safe. If possible, keep your dog outside in a safe area while certain areas are being cleaned.

This is also to be said of dog shampoos and deodorizers. They may smell good to some humans, but they are not a pleasant aroma for your dog. Your dog will try and roll in the grass or carpet the first opportunity they get after a bath! Baby shampoo works great for a lot of dogs, anything non scented is preferred and appreciated by your friend with paws.

Lastly….

Most dogs do not like loud noises, such as loud music, fireworks, gun shots and thunderstorms. The next time your dog is in your car with you, keep the volume to a comfortable level; you’ve got precious cargo in your car :) Regarding fireworks and thunderstorms, there are always options to try that could help make your dog a little more comfortable during stressful situations.

There are positive tools and aids you can use to create a safe and comfortable space for your dog. Every dog handles noise reactivity differently. If your dog gets extremely stressed out, you should mention it to your veterinarian and also reach out to a good local trainer to get extra guidance. This way your entire family will know how to reduce the amount of stress these noises bring and prepare for upcoming events (Fourth of July Fireworks, New Years, etc) and create a safe plan of action.

These requirements apply to most dogs.

Keep in mind that different breeds have heightened senses and those dogs can sometimes respond in unique ways. I believe it’s important for humans to know what dogs are comfortable with, as opposed to what your dog tolerates because they worship and adore you. he following information is excerpted from Clemson University Home and Garden Information Center (HGIC) Fact Sheet 4095, submitted by my colleague Melissa Bales and Clemson University student intern Carley Mahanna. I often talk about portion size when teaching and though it sounds obvious, I really don’t think people get it — a lot of us are just eating too much.

A “portion” is the amount of food that you choose to eat. A “serving” is a recommended amount of food often found on a Nutrition Facts panel. Portion sizes may be more or less than a serving. If you focus on measuring your portions and to reflect the recommended serving size, you may be surprised to find that you lose weight.

A lot of people say they are confused as to what and how much to eat. Supersize is the norm and people expect to get what they pay for. A good, basic place to start is the USDA’s site, www.myplate.gov.

This is a fantastic place to learn about food groups, nutrients in foods, and recommended serving sizes.

The Nutrition Facts label on most products will state the amount that is in one serving. There are several ways you can measure serving size — measuring cups and spoons, a kitchen scale, or a calculator. If you don’t have these handy, use your hand as a reference.

You can also use various everyday objects to estimate serving size.

How to track

Tracking your food can help you reach a healthy weight goal and maintain a balanced diet. Kaiser Permanente’s Center for Health Research published a study PAGE 30

of nearly 1700 participants. They found that people who kept daily food records lost twice as much weight as those who kept no records. Food tracking can help you become aware of eating behaviors and food choices. It can create a sense of accountability and can help you discover adjustments that you need to make.

By reviewing a food journal or app, you may find ways to cut back on calories by smaller portions that reflect recommended serving sizes eating less fat, or fewer sweetened beverages. Food tracking can also show your eating habits and can display your progress over time.

You can track your food in several ways.

Tracking your food can be important for weight loss and a healthy diet. It gives you a visible representation of what you eat throughout the day and can help you meet your nutrition goals. Using a notebook or a spreadsheet is a great way to write down the foods you eat. There are also several apps for your Smartphone that can help you log your meals. MyFitnessPal, MyNetDiary, MyPlate Calorie Counter, and Nutrition Facts are all free phone apps that can help you keep track of the foods you eat throughout the day. Practice writing the time of day and what food or beverage you consumed. You can also write the amount consumed and the number of calories. Most of the apps listed previously have calorie counters and can give you the nutrition facts of several foods. Practice using a food log or apps to track your food to have a healthy and balanced diet.

Focusing on portion size is an important factor that can help you avoid overeating.

By using your hands (see graphic to the left), measuring cups, or items you have around your house (see graphic to the right), you can accurately track what you are eating to help you eat smaller portions and reach the USDA’s MyPlate daily recommendations for each food group.

That being said, I want to briefly include a recommendation — and if you do decide to track your food intake you will note this.

Pay close to attention to how much candy and packaged cakes/cookies you are consuming. I have been watching the candy and snack cake aisles in the local grocery stores and I am astonished at how quickly they sell out! We York County residents are packing away the goodies. yc

Heartworm disease and your pet

Transmission

When a mosquito bites an infected dog, it ingests circulating microfilaria (baby worms) from the blood stream. Within the mosquito, the microfilaria matures into infective heartworm larvae. The mosquito then bites another dog and transmits these infective larvae. The larvae enter the dog’s blood stream and migrate to the right side of the heart, where they mature for the next six months into adult heartworms.

These worms can grow up to 12 inches in length and can live in the dog’s heart for up to seven years! The female worms produce more microfilaria that serve as the source of infection, and the cycle continues.

Signs of Heartworm Disease

Detection

Fortunately, diagnosing heartworm disease is relatively simple and inexpensive.

Most veterinarians recommend yearly screening for heartworm disease as part of your pet’s yearly check-up and laboratory testing. By screening healthy pets, we can detect the disease in its early stages with better outcomes after treatment. These tests are extremely accurate; however, no

test is perfect. These tests can only detect adult heartworms, so if your dog has been exposed to the disease within the last 6 months, you may get a false negative test.

Your veterinarian may recommend retesting your pet in six months if they have not been on a prevention regularly. False positive results are extremely uncommon.

Treatment

If your dog is diagnosed with heartworm disease, a thorough evaluation should be performed. This may include a physical exam, blood and urine testing, and chest x-rays. These tests help your veterinarian determine the “stage” or severity of the disease. Treatment for dogs with advanced heartworm disease may have to be delayed until they are stable enough to receive the treatment. In some cases, the disease may be so severe that your pet may not survive treatment. In these cases, your veterinarian may prescribe medications to help ease the symptoms and prevent discomfort. Treatment for heartworm disease can be quite expensive — in some cases $1,000-plus for a medium to large breed dog. The treatment consists of a regimen of oral medications and a series of painful injections that are given in the lower back muscles.

During the two-to-three-month treatment period, your dog must be strictly confined to limit their exercise to prevent life threatening complications that can occur as the worms begin to die. Following heartworm treatment, some dogs may have long term

effects on their heart, lungs, and internal organs, while other dogs with less serious initial illness, may live a normal lifespan.

Prevention

This is certainly one situation where an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Thankfully, preventing heartworms is both easy and inexpensive. Often for less than $10 a month, heartworms can be prevented with nearly 100% efficacy.

Heartworm preventions work by killing the infective larvae after mosquito exposure, thereby halting development of heartworm disease. In addition to preventing heartworms, many of these products also prevent intestinal parasites and in some cases fleas and ticks. Whether you are looking for a monthly chewy treat, a six or 12-month injection, an all-in-one heartworm, parasite, flea, and tick prevention, or a topical product; there is a heartworm prevention for almost any need or budget. Because of possible reactions that can occur in heartworm positive dogs, your veterinarian will require that the pet has been recently heartworm tested prior to dispensing or administering heartworm prevention. Prevention is always safer and more affordable than treating dogs with heartworm infections.

Heartworms in cats

Heartworms can infect cats, although the disease is very different than it is in dogs. Cats are a poor host for the parasite and many heartworms do not make it to

In the early stages of the disease, your pet may not exhibit any signs at all. This is why heartworm disease is sometimes called a “silent killer.” As the disease progresses, the worms cause significant changes in the pulmonary arteries, leading to coughing, exercise intolerance, lethargy, decreased appetite, and weight loss. Eventually, the strain on the heart leads to heart failure and fluid build-up in the abdomen, causing a swollen belly appearance. In some cases, dogs can have an allergic (anaphylactic) reaction to the worms, and this can lead to sudden death.

the adult stage in cats. Whereas dogs can sometimes have hundreds of heartworms in their heart and pulmonary arteries, cats often will only have one or two adult worms. Because the laboratory tests can only detect adult heartworms, the disease can often go undetected in cats. A single adult heartworm can be fatal to a cat.

Immature heartworms cause Heartworm Associated Respiratory Disease (HARD), resulting in weight loss, vomiting, poor appetite, and asthma-like symptoms. The medications used to treat heartworms in dogs, cannot be used in cats, making prevention the only means of protecting cats from heartworm disease. Monthly heartworm prevention is recommended for all indoor and outdoor cats in our area.

nutrition services for older individuals and their spouses of any age. Home-delivered meals are often the first in-home service that an older adult receives, and the program is a primary access point for other home and community-based services.

• The In-Home Homemaker services are provided to older persons needing help with light housekeeping tasks. The homemaker services are provided by a trained and supervised aide usually one day per week for an average of 3 hours.

• Caregiver Support/Respite services are intended to aid primary family caregivers who are providing direct care to relatives/persons who require assistance and supervision on an ongoing basis. The aim of caregiving supportive services is to help family caregivers reduce caregiver stress by taking a break, provide emotional support, build caregiver knowledge and skills, provide information about community services and resources, assist caregivers financially on a limited basis when eligible and giver caregiver’s greater flexibility and choice of services.

Eligible caregivers must be: • An adult (18 years or older) • Providing care for a functionally dependent person 60 years or older requiring frequent or continuous care and/or supervision due to chronic health conditions or physical/cognitive impairment • Responsible for providing care or for directing the care of the Care Receiver • Must be providing ongoing care without payment Additionally, Seniors, age 55 or older, Raising Children, who are financially and solely responsible for raising a dependent child 18 years old or younger are eligible to receive service through the Family Caregiver Support Program. Online Library Card renewal now available

Need to renew your library card? York County patrons can use the new online renewal form. To renew your library card online, fill out the online form, and a library staff member will review the information and process the renewal. You can also call or visit your local YCL location to renew your card. York County Library cards expire every two years and must be renewed. To get started, visit yclibrary. org/library-cards.

Get Crafty: Pick Up a Take and Make Kit

Pick up a Take and Make Activity Kit at your nearest YCL location. Kits are available for all ages and include instructions and necessary materials. Kits are available in limited supplies on a first-come, firstserved basis. Look for new kits on YCL’s Events Calendar, Facebook page, and YouTube Channel. Patrons can also enjoy “Miss Frances’ DIY Fun” printable activities at home. If you have completed a Take and Make Kit, share it on social media.

Join the Big Library Read

Known as the only global eBook reading club, the Big Library Read is an opportunity for patrons to read the same digital title at the same time without

any wait lists or holds. From April 5 - 19, patrons can borrow and read copies of Dr. Brian King’s, “The Art of Taking It Easy.”

Dalton Gallery

T

he Arts Council of York County is now accepting proposals for 2022 gallery exhibitions in the Dalton Gallery at the Center for the Arts, 121 E. Main St., Rock Hill, SC 29730. The Arts Council is a non-profit organization commit-

ted to creating and supporting a thriving arts community in York County, South Carolina. The Dalton Gallery is a well-appointed, 1,800 square-foot professional gallery that has been appropriated for the exhibition of experienced artists and community projects.

Each year the Arts Council presents six to eight exhibits. Artists wishing to be considered as a solo or group exhibition for one of the Arts Council’s 2022 gallery exhibitions, must submit the following to Mike Gentry, Gallery Manager, by 5 PM on Friday, April 2, 2021: Exhibition proposal describing themes, goals, and vision of the artist(s) in the presentation of the body of work submitted for consideration. Artists may submit proposals for exhibition as a group or individually.

Artist statement describing the techniques used in the creation of the work, and the ideas of concepts communicated through the works submitted for exhibition.

Artist(s) must include a statement of clarification within their artist statement if the works submitted are not the works intended for exhibition. In this case, artists must submit examples of previous works, and a discussion of the techniques and concepts that will be utilized in the planned exhibition works.

Artist resume or curriculum vitae that includes name, contact information, short biography, list of past exhibitions, education notable honors, awards, publications.

10 to 12 hi-res images (300 dpi jpegs) representing work intended for exhibition.

Images will be accepted by email or on a disc or thumb drive. Discs and thumb drives will not be returned.

Inventory list with titles, sizes, and mediums that have been numbered to correspond to the file names of the images submitted for consideration.

The Arts Council’s Gallery Committee will consider all submissions and notification of acceptance will be provided via e-mail. Submission packets will not be returned. Only complete proposals that adhere to the Arts Council’s submission guidelines will be considered. Works that sell while on exhibit at the Center for the Arts are subject to a commission fee by the Arts Council of York County.
