The Junior League of Greenville has been influencing the Greenville community for 85 years. During this time the Junior League has partnered with and supported more than 300 local agencies, given over $2.4 million back to the community in the form of grants and community programs, and provided countless volunteer hours. Greenville is a better place thanks to the Junior League of Greenville.

In the Junior League of Greenville, I have found a group of likeminded women of all ages who care about acquiring a deeper knowledge of the community and who work together to make a difference. As individuals we may all be quite different, but we connect as a group to concentrate on the concerns of our hometown and to work for the wellbeing of the people of Greenville.

This year, the Junior League is placing an emphasis on three Focus Areas – Education, Families & Children, and Health & Wellness. By collaborating with agencies sharing the same passion for improving the lives of women and families, we hope that our volunteers can create lasting, measureable change.

The Junior League has also designed its own community programs which fall within these three impact areas. Our Junior Volunteers committee focuses on education and promoting the love of voluntarism in middle school children. The “A Nearly New You” committee works to improve the lives of women and families through equipping, educating, and empowering women and children in need. The goal of our Home Run for Healthy Kids® committee is to encourage children in our area to appreciate the benefits of healthy eating, exercise, and safety.

As we understand the immediate issues in the community, the Junior League of Greenville can continue to build strong partnerships and programs to create an impact. To sustain our efforts into the future, financial support from our members, sponsors, and the community is required. Financially secure and debt free, the Junior League of Greenville is a great investment.

Our endeavors not only initiate positive community change within our Focus Areas, but they also engage our members in high quality community and civic leadership development. The beauty of our organization pours out through our “Smiling Faces, Impacting Places,” which is our theme for the 2014-2015 League year. You can see the smiles of our members throughout the Upstate, in all walks of life. This year’s theme helps us to celebrate 85 years of service to the Greenville community and allows us to applaud the efforts and impact that our members have made over these past eight decades.

Dr. Kathryn Freedman

Dr. Kathryn Freedman is a wife and mother of two daughters, and she has been a member of the Junior League for over thirteen years. As a practicing dentist, she has devoted her life to improving people’s smiles, and she enjoys applying this passion in a different capacity as President of the JLG. She hopes that the work of the JLG will increase the smiles in Greenville and enhance the lives of women and children in our community.

// Sustainer Representative’s letter

WHEN MY CHILDREN WERE YOUNGER, I ALWAYS USED TO LOVE THOSE LAST TWO WEEKS OF AUGUST. This marked a time when school was back in session, yet most extracurricular activities would not begin until after Labor Day. It was a way to ease back into the routine. By October, life had always reached a full-speed-ahead pace.

Even now, as my girls are nearly all on their own (our youngest is a senior in college), the fall seems busier than ever. On the heels of fall and football season comes the holidays, my favorite time of year. I love the fellowship, the food and the excitement.

In this issue, we are celebrating the 85th anniversary of JLG and beauty at every age. Thinking back to 85 years ago, the year was 1929. Chaos in the financial markets marked the international backdrop just as the JLG was being formed. Yet, this organization has persevered all of these years. Think of the beautiful women of that time - not of their physical beauty but of their strength, their determination, their resilience and their willingness to serve.

When we think of the word beauty, we almost always think of physical features. Yet, when you pause to think about how you use the word “beautiful” especially this time of year, here are a few things that come to mind: changing leaves, rich sunsets, clear skies, friends, smiling children and, on this 85th anniversary, those who came before us willing to invest their time to help others.

These things are truly beautiful. How will the current JLG be remembered 85 years from now? We are not all alike. Some are leaders, yet some prefer to work behind the scenes. In a group like the Junior League,

we all use our varying gifts and energy to make a larger impact together in the Greenville community.

When I recall the beautiful women who have influenced me in my own life, I remember the ones of all ages who are selfless, giving, generous and kind. So many talented women have come into my life and into the lives of my children. From babysitters, teachers and friends to youth leaders, neighbors, and family, these women have each loved and encouraged my three girls and me along the way. My grandmother, mother and aunt have always shared words of wisdom via mail, fax and now Email. I have kept so many of these in a file at my desk labeled “encouragement.” Part of this file is a quote sent by my mom not too long ago which reads, “It’s not what you gather, but what you scatter that tells what kind of life you have lived.”

Junior League women have been “scattering” love, energy and goodwill in Greenville for 85 years. When members look back in the year 2099, 85 years from now, I know they will find inspiration in the work of the women of the JLG today.

Annually, the JLG Sustainers gather to “scatter!” On December 11th and 12th of this year, Kimberly Cooley led our Sustainer service project: holiday bags for cancer patients. Each year, Sustaining Members fill hundreds of gift bags and deliver them to the Cancer Society of Greenville County to be given to patients during the holidays.

Our hope is that this small gift of love brings cheer to folks battling serious life illnesses during the holidays. I am proud to be a part of this organization - one committed to improving lives in the Greenville Community.

Letter from

THE EDITOR As I began research for the 85th anniversary-themed issue of VISIONS, I was humbled by the legacy that lay before me. Absorbed in the scrapbooks and file cabinets filled with pictures and newspaper clippings, I was mesmerized by the rich history of the Junior League of Greenville over the past eight and a half decades. Handwritten minutes from the first meeting in 1929, dances for soldiers serving in World War II, an education-focused circus (complete with elephant rides!) and a hand painted, moving T-Rex dinosaur exhibit are among the most visually stunning highlights. It quickly became evident to me that the JLG doesn’t just grow with the times; it leads the way.

The League has been influential in the development of the Peace Center for the Performing Arts, The Children’s Museum of the Upstate, Roper Mountain Science Center and a myriad of other family-focused educational resources in Greenville County.

I intuitively began to feel the responsibility of such achievement. How will my generation make our mark in this illustrious organization through culture shifts and changing times? The answer to this weighty question can be found in the models for the “Beauty at Every Age” feature. Each woman, representing her associated age decade, is so refreshing in her own unique way. From Sustainers who still find every avenue possible to give back to their community to young Active Members with vibrant talents and careers, this eclectic group bridges the generation gap with a common goal: building a safe, healthy, nurturing community.

When I joined the League in 2011, I was simply searching for a way to give back.

What I have received in return has been so much greater – dear friendships, professional and artistic inspiration and a special bond with the Greenville community. As you look through this issue, my hope is that you feel compelled to strive for the best version of yourself. Pursue your passions. Give all aspects of life your most sincere effort.

Share your gifts with others. Therein lies my personal definition of ageless beauty.

Born and raised in Aiken, SC, Melissa Stroud studied business at the University of South Carolina and has made her career as a wardrobe stylist for the past 10 years. She currently manages Augusta Twenty Clothing Boutique (www.augustatwenty.com) in downtown Greenville’s historic West End. Her hobbies include taste-testing her husband Don’s culinary creations and spending time with her 5 rescue pets. In addition to the Junior League of Greenville, Melissa also enjoys being part of the Hessie Morrah Garden Club, Downtown Symphony Club, MAConnect and Christ Church Episcopal.

Meet the 2014-15

JLG BOARD OF DIRECTORS Every year the Junior League of Greenville, Inc. (JLG) appoints a new set of leaders within the organization who serve on the Board of Directors (BOD). These women are not only responsible for the operations and ongoing financial stability of the organization, but also serve with a strategic focus, preparing the JLG for future changes by assessing ways to develop and strengthen the JLG for years to come. The BOD is comprised of 12 women who serve a single year term committed to making sure that 2014-2015 is the year that every minute spent is focused on improvement.

Kathryn R. Freedman President “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

Born in Roanoke, VA, this UGA alumna pursued her DMD at the Medical College of Georgia and now practices at Rocky Creek Dental Care. Initially joining the Junior League of Charlottesville while her husband, Allen, was in residency at UVA, Kathryn transferred to the JLG when the couple made their home in Greenville and has served a grand total of 13 years in the League. She is also Vice Chairman to the South Carolina Children’s Theatre Board of Directors and treasurer of the Chanticleer Community Association. This mother of 2 does find the occasional time to unwind – she and her husband enjoy tropical getaways to St. Lucia for milestone anniversaries and birthdays.

Rebecca Feldman President-Elect “The Junior League provides an outlet for me to do the things I enjoy, while sharpening my leadership skills with each year of membership.”

Rebecca’s 12 active years of service to the JLG have been a family affair: she and her husband, Bryan, own Two Men and a Truck franchises in 4 cities, which serves our Nearly New Shop with monthly pick-ups of large items. Born in Mississippi and graduating from Hollins University in Virginia, she stayed true to her southern roots by making South Carolina her permanent home. Rebecca is a devoted mother of 2 and also serves in the PTA at Augusta Circle and as an Ambassador and former Board Member of the Children’s Museum of the Upstate. She and her family love trips to Litchfield beach, attending First Baptist Church and dinners at Tsunami in downtown Greenville.

Sarah Lynne Howie Communications Vice President “Life is 10 percent what happens to you and 90 percent what you make of it.” -Charles R. Swindoll Life came full circle for this Abbeville, SC native who co-owns Rail Training & Consulting Inc. with her father.

With her active involvement in several railroad associations and a sales career that takes her across the country, she has come to enjoy exploring new locales.

An avid supporter of her alma mater, Sarah Lynne can be found cheering on the UGA football team on fall weekends with her husband, Lamar Williams. Whether reading “Goodnight Moon” to her 18 month old son, Harry (and their 3 pets), dining at Rick Erwin’s with family and friends, or volunteering in her 10th year of service with the JLG, one thing is certain: Sarah Lynne has perfected the balancing act.

Annie Maertens Community Vice President “Make the world before you a better one by going into it with all boldness.” -Seamus Heaney, in his commencement speech to the UNC class of 1996 A Bachelor of Arts degree from Clemson University, Master of Social Work from the University of South Carolina and a career in the social work and non-profit sector make this Greenville area native a natural in her current placement. Annie also serves on the Board of Directors for The Family Effect, as a member of the Clemson Women’s Alumni Council, a mentee of PULSE Pacesetters and on the Steering Committee for the Non-Profit Alliance. She finds balance in running with her rescue German Sheprador, cooking vegetarian dishes for her husband of 6 years, Jason, and drinking a little cheap pink champagne whilst watching HGTV.

Tracy Lyles Finance Vice President “Only a life lived for others is a life worthwhile.” -Albert Einstein Hailing from Pelzer, SC, Tracy earned a business degree from Southern Weslyan University and subsequently established a successful career in accounting.

Whether dining at Bonefish Grill or taking a getaway to San Diego, Tracy loves spending time with her husband, James, and daughter, Madison. Her warm smile, great attention to detail and 5 years of League experience make her the perfect fit to lead the Finance Council. When not working or volunteering, Tracy can be found reading “The Best Kept Secret” by Kimberla Lawson Roby while enjoying a slice of cheesecake.

Alissa Yeargin Fund Development Vice President “Be the change you wish to see in the world.” -Mahatma Gandhi With an English degree from Clemson University and a Master of Science and Rehabilitation in Communication Sciences and Disorders from the Medical University of South Carolina, Alissa makes her career as a Speech-Language Pathologist in her hometown of Greenville.

In addition to her 3 years of dedicated service to the JLG, she is also an Alumni Association Board Member at her alma mater, Christ Church Episcopal School. In her spare time, you can find Alissa and her husband, Charlie, vacationing in Charleston, dining at Purple in downtown Greenville or watching movies on the sofa with their cat, Romeo.

Brianna Shaw Membership Vice President “Everything happens for a reason.”

With a Bachelor of Science in Textiles & Clothing and Interior Design from Morehead State University, this Englewood, OH native now serves as Executive Director for the Euphoria food, wine and music festival.

Naturally, she loves dining at Soby’s with her husband, Christian, and their 2 sons.

Over her 6 years of service in the JLG, Brianna’s favorite placement was acting as Chair of Kids in the Kitchen. In her free time, she enjoys “fab four time” at the beach with her family, reads design books and is involved with Prince of Peace Catholic School.

Rebecca Wentzell Corresponding Secretary “No act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted.”

-Aesop Born in Lynchburg, VA and spending her youth in Columbia, SC, Rebecca studied Psychology at the College of Charleston and earned her Master of Social Work from the University of South Carolina. Now in her 9th year of service to the League, she has particularly enjoyed the Nominating and Active Advisory Committees as well as serving on the Board. A full-time mother of 2 (with 3 pets), Rebecca also serves on the Christ Church Episcopal Altar Guild and annual bazaar.

In her spare time, she enjoys dining at Rick Erwin’s with her husband, Johnny, and indulging in gossip magazines on a quiet beach.

Meg Ried Recording Secretary “Whatever you are, be a good one.” -Abraham Lincoln Currently working on her M.B.A. from Clemson University, this Communication Studies graduate makes her career as a Marketing Account Executive at Vantage Point.

Born in Naperville, IL, Meg loves dining at Chicago eatery, Portillo’s. In her 5 years of League service, she has most enjoyed volunteering at Pendleton Place for Children and Families and creating the current JLG website as the E-Communications Chair. In her free time, you can find Meg at Newspring Church, Meals on Wheels or watching the television show, “Nashville,” with a glass of wine.

Amy Hunter Strategic Planner “Kindness is a language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” -Mark Twain Having volunteered in many capacities, from Pendleton Place, Washington Center, Habitat for Humanity, The Children’s Museum of the Upstate and in-League roles within the Community and Membership Councils over Amy’s 12 years of service in the JLG, her favorite placements have been the opportunities that brought the most challenge.

Vast experience along with a B.S. from Clemson University and an M.S. from N.C. State University make this wife and mother of 3 an invaluable resource to the Board. Hailing from Seneca, SC, Amy now makes her career in the Research and Development industry and serves as Den Leader of Reedy Falls District Cub Scout Pack 30 and as a Member and Deacon at First Presbyterian Church in her spare time.

Heather Hooks Parliamentarian “We often take for granted the very things that most deserve our gratitude” –Cynthia Ozick Now in her 5th active year in the JLG, Heather feels honored to serve on the Board and is inspired by the leadership, service and dedication her fellow Board Members have displayed to the general membership and the community. Hailing from Sumter, SC, she studied Financial Management at Clemson University, now acts as a Financial Analyst with Charter Communications and is involved with the Greenville Symphony’s Vivace Society.

In her spare time, she and her husband, Craig, enjoy dining at Trattoria Giorgio, spending time with their cat, Sugar Bear, and vacationing in Rosemary Beach, FL.

Susan Reed Sustainer Representative “It’s not what happens to you, but how you react to it that matters.” –Epictetus With 27 years of service to the JLG and vast experience that includes co-chairing the pioneering “Dinamation Makin’ Tracks” exhibit in 1994, Susan is a seasoned advisor for the Board. Originally from Hampton, SC, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Clemson University and enjoyed a successful career in Accounting. Now retired, this mother of 3 girls enjoys spending time at the lake with her husband, Tim, dining at The Lazy Goat in downtown Greenville and international travels.

// 85 Years

5 8 SERVICE Years of

The Junior League of Greenville celebrated its 85th anniversary on September 12, 2014. Founded in 1929 by 20 women, the JLG now has 1,250 members from all walks of life striving to make an impact in our community. This milestone provides an opportunity to celebrate accomplishments in our community and look ahead to future growth and involvement. Throughout

its history, the JLG has supported more than 300 agencies with more than $2.5 million in donations throughout the Upstate and has been instrumental in the founding and funding of area organizations including the Children’s Museum of the Upstate, the Peace Center for the Performing Arts and Pendleton Place for Children and Families.

September 12, 1929: 20 young women came together to found a charitable organization called Junior Charities on the eve of the Great Depression to support Greenville as it joined the rest of the country’s economic decline.

1948: JLG’s Opportunity Shop opened in Greenville as a fundraiser for the organization and a way to provide affordable clothing options to the Greenville community. The Opportunity Shop was the precursor for today’s Nearly New Shop.

The first Junior Charities service project was Baby Diet Kitchen, teaching mothers about nutrition for their children and how to create healthy meals for their families.

1930s: The women of the Junior Charities served in the Greenville Maternity Shelter, supporting nurses and young mothers by providing encouragement and financial aid.

1947: After an initial decline letter due to the size of Greenville, the Junior Charities in Greenville was accepted into the Junior Leagues of America, becoming the Junior League of Greenville and also showcasing the growth experienced in Greenville.

1950s: The Greenville Hearing Society was founded by JLG members. This program provided low-cost hearing exams and family support to families throughout Greenville.

1959: JLG gave $5,000 to help found the first Greenville County Art Museum.

1974: Members of the JLG identified a need for an emergency holding place for children in abusive situations and raised $35,000 to build this initial facility, the precursor to Pendleton Place for Children and Families.

1975: The JLG helped found Pendleton Place through financial gifts of more than $90,000 and donations of volunteers’ time. For almost 4 decades, Pendleton Place has provided a safe and collaborative space to help children and families work through abuse and other similar situations. The JLG continues to support Pendleton Place both through donations and volunteer hours.

1980s: JLG sponsored the Clyde Beatty-Cole Brothers Circus in Greenville County. This exciting event opened the circus experience to families in Greenville who otherwise may not have had the opportunity to attend this type of event.

JLG began publishing its “Uptown Down South” Cookbook to share members’ family recipes and raise additional funds for the League to put back into the Greenville community.

1980: The JLG pledged $55,000 to the Warehouse Theatre.

1983: The JLG opened the Nearly New Shop on the main floor of its headquarters in Downtown Greenville.

1986: JLG coordinated a support group for the Greenville Children’s Hospital. League members volunteered to read to and spend time with children in the hospital.

1988-1989: JLG pledged $50,000 to help establish the Peace Center for the Performing Arts.

1990s: As part of its continuing effort to support and encourage the families of Greenville County, the JLG continued to bring the circus and other similar activities either free of charge or low cost to Greenville.

February - April 1997: JLG hosted the educational and exciting adventure, Carolina Creatures - A Prehistoric Journey.

1997-1998: JLG pledged $56,000 to establish the Children’s Museum of the Upstate.

2000s: JLG launched its new annual gala and fundraiser, Oscar Night® America. This evening celebrated the previous year in the League and also brought members of the community together for an evening of dining, dancing and laughter.

2001: The JLG’s cookbook, “Uptown Down South,” was named the official cookbook of Greenville.

Fall 2003: The Nearly New Shop moved to its current home at 118 Greenacre Road.

July 5, 2004: The Junior League of Greenville, in an effort to completely invest in the Nicholtown Community, moved to its current headquarters location at 120 Greenacre Road.

2006 - 2007: The JLG began participation in the Kids in the Kitchen project, helping elementary and middle school children understand healthy eating and identify fun ways to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Fall 2008: JLG of Greenville held the first Home Run for Healthy Kids®, a two-day event for 4th and 5th grade students in Greenville to learn about healthy habits.

2013: JLG pledged $100,000 to create an early childhood learning center in the Nicholtown Community.

I spent two years working as a counselor in a community mental health setting here in Greenville and not only did that instill an unmatched perspective into the lives of those who are less privileged than myself, it solidified the crucial needs we have right here in the Greenville community. The bottom line is that helping others helps Greenville.”

Beauty secret: “Know your craft.

The only difference between you and your favorite celebrity is a makeup artist. Watch some Youtube tutorials and practice! There is not a single expensive beauty product that could supplant some basic skills.”

Style tip: “In your twenties, you have

a little more latitude to experiment with different trends and styles. This fall, don’t be afraid to mix patterns and textures!

Stay in the same palette or maintain a theme to prevent it from looking messy or haphazard.”

What have you most gained from being a Member of the JLG? “As a young professional woman, I appreciate the opportunity to volunteer and spend time with other successful women I’d like to emulate. I admire how each member balances career, family and philanthropy differently yet gracefully.”

“I enjoyed working as Sponsor Relations Chair, especially getting to know our sponsors personally and coming up with ways to thank them for their support.”

Hobbies: “I most enjoy writing

and performing music in my spare time. I also enjoy being with friends and family, exercising, trying out new restaurants in downtown Greenville and volunteering with the Special Olympics of South Carolina.”

Community involvement:

“Besides the JLG, I am involved with the Young Lawyers Division (YLD) of the South Carolina Bar. Lloyd Beattie Lloyd Allen Beattie’s family legacy is a special one: her mother, Effie Lloyd Allen, was a founding Member of the Junior Charities in 1929, just a few months after Mrs. Beattie was born. Mrs. Beattie has gone on to serve more than 60 years in what is now known as the Junior League of Greenville. The spirit of voluntarism remains in the family as her daughter, Effie Dickey, is also an esteemed Sustainer in the League.

Mrs. Beattie has fond memories of the Nearly New Shop when it was located on South Main Street and can still vividly remember all of the beautiful children’s clothes that were graciously donated.

Photographed in the home she has owned since the ‘40s, Mrs. Beattie remains the quintessential picture of dignity and elegance.

larming rates of childhood obesity and preventable disease led the Junior League of Greenville to create Home Run for Healthy Kids® in 2007. The 2-day annual event welcomes 2,300 Greenville County 4th and 5th grade students to Fluor Field in Downtown Greenville for 4 hours

of free educational fun. Students play through four themed stations (Safety, Physical Well-Being, Nutritional Education and Healthy Lifestyles) sponsored by partners from Greenville County.

Sponsoring partners also provide healthy and educational gifts for each child.

The 2014 Home Run for Healthy Kids® highlighted the importance of education after school by partnering with BOOST’s Lights On After School Program run by JLG member Erica McCleskey. BOOST teaches parents and educators how to add value to time when school is not in session. As part of this focus, Home Run for Healthy Kids® recognized the LiveWell Greenville Healthy Afterschool Designated programs for 2014.

These partner schools have taken the initiative to create programs focused

on health and wellbeing to educate students on how to make healthy choices.

The Helen Horton Hunt Service Award was created by the 1988-89 Nominating Committee to recognize outstanding volunteer service. Administrative Leaders from Junior Leagues across the country traveled to share ideas and listen to speakers dedicated to educating these women on topics pertaining to their roles within the Junior League. During the two-day conference, they were treated to a biscuit bar, magnolias, unique Southern cuisine and a glimpse of our wonderful city.

The JLG’s own Tina Hampton, Kathryn Freedman, René Morrow, Brittney Woodard, and Kimberly Cooley spent several months alongside other JLG volunteers collecting donations for gift bags that perfectly represented Greenville, choosing the ideal Southern foods and culture to display, and organizing the speakers and sessions. Their efforts were rewarded with feedback such as “the hospitality was incredible” and “they outdid themselves.”

The conference focused on tips to bring Junior League volunteers and staff together and how to continue to build a network among Junior League Executive Administrators. The twenty-nine attendees heard presentations from Clemson’s sports psychologist Dr. Milt Lowder, Greenville leader Jim Kaltenbach, and website

provider Digital Cheetah®. Dr. Lowder helped participants discover the “why” behind what Junior Leagues do while Mr. Kaltenbach led a discussion on fundraising, which led to an information-sharing session on how the different Leagues handle their fundraisers. The representatives from Digital Cheetah®, in addition to serving as a sponsor, helped the women understand new options available in the software and answered questions about current issues.

To help prepare the attendees for the

educational sessions, the Steering Committee worked with local graphic designer Ben Cox of BenCoxDesigns to design a unique conference logo. The logo featured Greenville’s Liberty Bridge with the word “team” in colored block letters. This visual image not only emphasized Greenville as the host city but also highlighted the key concepts of the conference. It represented the importance of building a bridge between the staff and members of each League, and the fact that the leaders at the conference play a pivotal roll in creating that bridge. At the conclusion of the two-day event, all of the women walked away with increased camaraderie and a renewed sense of purpose in their positions within the Junior League. The verdict was unanimous amongst attendees: they could not wait to visit Greenville again. V

to The Junior League of Greenville’s Mission by making a gift to the Annual Fund this year.

I recently read an article in the Junior League of Atlanta’s magazine, Peachtree Papers. The article, written by Shawn Shepard, asked several questions that inspired me to think about our Annual Fund Campaign in a new way. I hope it will have the same impact on you.

Are you fulfilling all of your commitments to the Junior League of Greenville?

Well, let’s see. Paid your dues? Check.

Met your meeting credits? Check.

Dropped off Nearly New Shop quota?

Check. Put in 40 hours at your placement? Check. Donated to the Annual Fund Campaign?

Wait, giving to the Annual Fund is not a Membership Obligation…

Donating to the Annual Fund is not a Membership Obligation, but it is arguably another important commitment that we as members should make to support the League’s mission.

Should I give money as well as my time?

Yes! If you are committed to the League, then you are committed to fulfilling its mission. While we are extremely thankful for the countless volunteer hours of our members, money is also crucial to that mission. Kathryn Freedman, 2014-15 President of the Junior League of Greenville, described the concept as the M&M Factor.

“To achieve the Mission of the Junior League, we must realize the changes that need to be made in our community, cultivate and educate our membership on those needs, and then encourage fundraising to

make the changes come to fruition. The M&M factor is an easy way to link this all together - Mission & Money are both needed for us to impact the Greenville community. The Junior League of Greenville needs our time, talents, and treasures to ensure a financially healthy and successful future.”

But I pay my dues. Isn’t that enough?

According to Tracy Lyles, the Finance Vice President, dues are meant to cover the operating costs of the JLG. These include Association of Junior League International dues, utilities, office supplies and administrative salaries.

Annual gifts, however, are necessary to support all other costs and expenses associate with the League’s mission of promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. The League can use money from annual gifts to train its members, fund the programs that the volunteers manage and provide financial assistance to community partners. Your donation to the 2014-2015 Annual Fund Campaign enables the Junior League of Greenville to further its mission by provid-

ing financial support for our community projects and programs including A Nearly New You, Home Run for Healthy Kids, Junior Volunteers, and the Nearly New Shop.

What if I can’t give very much?

Should I bother?

Definitely! Any contribution you make serves a very important purpose for the League. Many corporations consider the charitable contributions of an organization’s membership prior to making contributions and commitments of their own. It makes a powerful statement to the community when an organization’s members are so committed to its mission that they support the organization financially. In honor of our 85th Anniversary, the Board of Directors is asking members to consider a donation of $85 – the equivalent to a dinner out at a nice restaurant. Because we would love to see 100% participation from our members, donations in ANY amount are welcomed and appreciated.

I want to give. Now what do I do?

The League has a number of options available for giving. You can go online to JLGreenville.org/donate and make a contribution by credit card. You can also mail a check made out to Junior League of Greenville to 118 Greenacre Road, Greenville, SC 29607. When paying your dues

each year, you can designate an amount for an annual gift on your dues statement. Another way to donate includes seeking matching contributions from your employer. During this special anniversary year, the Board of Directors has chosen to reopen the 1929 Club. Previous donors at this level gave $1929 or more in support of our Capital Campaign. You can be a part of this special group by donating at this amount. Both current members of the 1929 Club and any new donors at this level will receive special recognition at the May 2015 General Membership Meeting and on a plaque in the JLG Headquarters.

Why I give.

As we celebrate our 85th Anniversary as the Junior League of Greenville and we spend time with loved ones over the holidays, I urge you to stop and reflect on that for which you are thankful. I asked the Sustaining Advisor to the Fund Development Council, Kimberly Cooley, to explain why she gives to the Annual Fund. Kimberly said, “I’m so thankful to be a part of the JLG. It is wonderful to see the JLG continue to grow the organization and our members into strong and impactful leaders within our community.

With proceeds from the Annual Fund going directly to programs and projects of the JLG, I’m excited to give to the Annual Fund this year.”
