I

t is time to count our blessings, celebrate the season and give generously if you can.

This year, to make things a little easier for the Neighbors Helping Neighbors Charity Drive (canned goods, toys, coats, hats and gloves), we invite friends and neighbors to send a check in any amount to Clover Area Assistance Center, PO Box 521, Clover, SC, 29710 to help our neighbors in need this holiday season. CAAC provides assistance with food, utilities, holiday meals and many other basic needs. Those who enjoy contributing toys can drop them off at United Bank at Lake Wylie from Nov 19 to Dec. 17.

A variety of holiday festivities are on tap for this year. In early December, Christmas Ville in Rock Hill will kick off with a parade and a variety of activities. Historic Brattonsville Christmas will present historic scenes and reenactments of centuries ago. The old fashioned Lowry’s Parade will be held in Lowrys on a Saturday before Christmas. There will be horses and wagons and all kinds of sights.

The Holidays at the Gardens at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden outdoor light displays will open on Nov. 29 and continue until Jan. 4.

Winterfest at Carowinds is always a festive, fun weekend day or evening to gather with family and/or friends to celebrate the season.

There will be characters dressed in holiday costumes, live music and dancing, carriage rides, a huge Christmas Tree, lots of lights and decorations, decorated cookies, a holiday meal buffet, rides and an abundance of holiday sights, sounds and smells to delight the senses.

A few miles away, McAdenville, known as Christmas Town USA, will have its lovely 2

light displays. This historic mill town lights up at night from Thanksgiving until Christmas night, with tiny white lights, displays and holiday scenes.

There will be Christmas parades in Clover, York, Fort Mill and a tree lighting in Tega Cay. At Lake Wylie, Lights on the Lake Holiday Boat Parade will take place on Dec. 11 with decorated boats parading along the shoreline from Papa Doc’s, then north around and back under the bridge to follow the shoreline by the Red Fez, then across by River Hills shoreline and Camp Thunderbird and back under the bridge to Papa Doc’s. There will be Santas, elves, snowmen and lots of creative decorations and lights that will delight kids of all ages. Gather your family and friends and decorate a boat, register and participate in the parade for a special holiday memory and fun time.

If you want a country experience, a drive to Windy Hill for an evening bonfire and sampling of hard cider flights and apple products is always a treat.

The winter issue of Lake Wylie Today will highlight the popular trend of craft beer in the Food for Thought Section. Copper Premium Pub and Lake Wylie Brewery are two local businesses that have a variety of local craft beers and good food to enjoy on an evening out with friends.

The Faces feature tells the story of a local teacher and how he inspired his students to make a difference and choose a cause to raise funds to help others. The story tells the journey from that lesson to how students have raised and contributed more than $1 million

to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital with the Moped to Memphis annual fundraiser. It warms the heart and is a great example for teaching lifelong lessons to students.

Another feature highlights the charity work of the River Hills–Lake Wylie Lion’s Club and its efforts to raise funds to help area charities year after year. From charity raffles, Christmas Tree sales, golf tournaments and the annual River Hills Directory, hundreds of thousands of dollars are raised to contribute to local causes and charities. We hope you enjoy the story.

This issue also features a story about Kindermusik and how it changes children’s lives and does so much more for their learning while they are young. Music is a lifelong pleasure for many whether they are musicians or simply enjoy the beat and sounds. Kindermusik introduces small children to music — and little children and music are a great match.

Bush-N-Vine owner named Farmer of the Year

obert “Bob” Martin Hall of York, was recently named the overall Swisher/ Sunbelt Ag Expo Southeastern Farmer of the Year for 2020-2021. Hall owns Bush-N-Vine Farm, a fruit and vegetable growing enterprise. His career began 41 years ago on land that’s been in his family for a century and a half.

Hall studied horticulture at Clemson University, graduating in 1980 with a B.S. degree and a desire to grow crops and directly market fresh fruits and vegetables. Carolina Dive and Rescue Team Serves Up Water-Related Recoveries of All Kinds

aura Lando saw her Apple watch tumble off the dock and sink into Lake Wylie.

And her heart sank, too.

Not only was the watch a costly item to replace, but losing it presented a major inconvenience. Laura would need to restore contacts and other information that was saved on the device.

Fortunately, Laura knew who to call to retrieve the watch: the Carolina Dive and Rescue Team (CDAR).

In less than nine minutes, CDAR divers located Laura’s submerged watch, retrieved it, and placed it back in her hands. “It was amazing,” says Laura. “And the watch still works!”

The all-volunteer Carolina Dive and Rescue team answers water-related emergency calls in York County, most visibly during accidents on Lake Wylie. But as important as those rescues are, the team also provides other water-related recovery services for local residents. Laura knew to call this skilled group of local volunteers. And you can, too.

Diving into different rescues

Before recreational diving became more widespread and affordable, Lake Wylie rescue personnel had few options apart from dragging the lake floor with hooks. Local diving enthusiasts decided to apply their skills to make recovery less gruesome for both survivors and rescuers. In 1988, seven citizens formed the York County Emergency Response Team. They used a $10,000 grant to purchase dive operations equipment.

Initially, the team operated under county direction and responded to all kinds of emergencies both on land and in the water. But as members developed diving skills and acquired specialty equipment, their mission narrowed.

The team obtained independent nonprofit status and transitioned to focus solely on water-related services. Its new name, Carolina Dive and Rescue, reflects its specific mission.

Today, CDAR responds to any water-related emergency call in York County. Volunteers have rescued residents who are stranded in flooded neighborhoods, raised an owner’s sunken cubby cabin houseboat, even fished out a citizen’s hearing aid from the lake.

Waterfront homeowners can even schedule CDAR dock surveys, says Commander Chad Davis, to ensure submerged areas are safe for swimming and recreation. CDAR divers will conduct an underwater scan of a homeowner’s dock to find obstacles or dangerous debris —

tires, wasted Christmas trees, and discarded fishing lines — and provide the homeowner with a map of what lies below the surface. In many cases, the team will remove the debris, too. “It’s one of the services we provide that I enjoy the most,” says Chad. “Dock surveys help residents and their children to be safe.”

Divers and more

That passion for diving and service typifies team members. “We have not missed a water rescue call since I’ve been on the team,” says Chad, which is a credit to CDAR, given that it is completely staffed by volunteers that live in and around York County. A handful of team

members are retirees. The rest maintain full time jobs but have flexibility to take paid time off when a call comes in.

And they stay busy. CDAR gets plenty of other calls that other agencies don’t — about 30-40 a year. Each situation is different, but on average requires eight to ten volunteers to respond.

Some dive. Others drive the boat, manage ropes, track divers, and analyze sonar. Still others provide support skills that are essential for the team. “Our surface support members make sure that the team can function,” Chad explains. “They do all the important stuff in the background,” like establishing safety pro-

tocol, testing gear, and conducting administrative tasks.

A deep dive into safety

Of the team’s two dozen members, five are certified divers licensed to conduct in-water rescue on Lake Wylie. Eighteen are certified swift water technicians qualified to provide rescue services on ponds, streams, and rivers such as the South Fork and the Catawba.

Skills and safety are paramount in rescue operations, which is why volunteer certification can take 1-2 years. CDAR divers must obtain a Professional Association of Diving Instructors (PADI) Public Safety Diver™

designation, a four-step process that requires clearance in both surface and underwater skills.

Meanwhile, CDAT swift water technicians earn two certifications: Basic Swift Water Rescue, focusing on rescuer safety and land-based rescue techniques, and Advanced Swift Water Rescue, which equips volunteers with victim rescue skills, night operations, and boat operations.

But regardless of each CDAR member’s function, the entire group trains at last once and often two times a month. They simulate rescue and recovery with ropes, lift bags, and communications equipment or focus on specific scenarios to keep their skills sharp.

Further, the team’s divers convene once a year at a local pool for a skills review and checkoff conducted with black out masks.

“Lake Wylie is opaque — like chocolate milk,” explains Chad. “Divers need to be able to operate their knives, comms, and emergency equipment without seeing anything.”

The rescue team owns a flat bottom Jon boat for small rescues on ponds and rivers, a pontoon boat as its main dive platform on the lake, and two jet skis. The watercraft are outfitted with side-scan sonar machines — “basically, glorified fish finders,” says Chad — to mark locations and items of interest on the lake’s floor. Sonar tracking allows divers to enter the water with an idea of where to search.

Divers are outfitted in dry suits, tanks, and full-face masks with communications equipment so they can stay in continual contact with the team on the surface. But “a diver can be underwater only for so long,” says Chad.

“We get exhausted.” During extensive or complicated searches, CDAR gets support from the York County Sheriff Office Dive Team, the Charlotte Fire Department Dive Team, and in some cases, personnel with the Department of Natural Resources. And CDAR does the same for them.

Local support drives our divers

From its infancy, CDAR chose quality equipment and quality gear, which has proven to be long-lasting and reliable. Along with watercraft, the team uses face masks ($1,000), buoyancy control device vests to hold air tanks and protect divers underwater ($1,000), and dry suits ($1,500- $2,000), among other things.

“When we attend dive and swift water trainings, we work with rescuers from other states like Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia,” he explains. “They don’t have near-

ly as much local support as we get from York County residents.”

And while CDAR members may initially join the team to satisfy a passion for the water or diving, volunteers often find themselves changed by the experience.

“We train hard, but ultimately we don’t want to use our skills to recover victims,” says Chad. “We’d rather help prevent an accident around your dock or recover an item that belongs to you.”

Craft Beer’s Popularity Jumps Both at the Pub and at Home

rewing is big. As in brewing craft beer.

Even if you’re not a beer aficionado, it’s hard to miss the growing number of craft

beer options that grace Lake Wylie’s local taps at Copper Premium Pub (70-plus) and Sweet Water Café (80-plus).

The rise of craft beer popularity, says Bart Watson of trade group Brewers Association, parallels the “Buy Local” consumer trend. That, plus the fact that consumers like variety. And in the wake of the pandemic, homebrewing has surged. Northern Brewer, a major supplier of homebrewing and wine-making equipment in America, says business shot up by 40% to 50% during the shutdown.

Restaurants often develop their own signature house craft beer as a way to generate higher profit margin and develop brand loyalty. And increasing numbers of beer buffs are embracing craft brews as their beverage of choice at the tap, beermaking as a side gig, and even home brewing just for fun. Many of those enthusiasts are right here in our community.

Traditional beer versus craft beer

Craft beer is made with the same four ingredients as traditional beer: water, malt

(from fermented grain, often barley), hops, and yeast. And craft brewers follow the same production processes as their mass-produced counterparts.

But while industrial concoctions like Miller and Bud contain artificial flavorings and additives, craft brews are made from all-natural ingredients.

And craft brewers add non-traditional fixings or personal touches to create their own innovative brew flavors. That distinctive approach often reflects seasonal ingredients, nearby history, and locally sourced fruits and nuts.

beer made in Seattle – even peach overtones in a craft beer made right here in the Palmetto State.

A trail of craft breweries

Along with its all-natural ingredient list, a craft brewery is also defined by number of barrels produced. It must put out less than 6 million a year. And 75% of the brewery must be owned by an independent brewer.

But lest you think that volume seems plenty high, know the reason for the rule. A limit on maximum production guarantees that mega-breweries cannot take over craft breweries.

Plus, lower output restrictions allow smaller operations to maintain a unique status and peddle a fear-of-missing-out mentality, which builds their fan base. The cap also means that

Food for Thought independent breweries can maintain crafty techniques and twists that are so appealing to consumers.

York County alone boasts more than a dozen craft breweries – all one-of-a-kind. There’s Amor Artis Brewing, a cozy meeting spot in quaint downtown Fort Mill; Windy Hill Orchard & Cidery, a farm in York that started brewing cider in 1996; and local mega brewpub Legal Remedy in Rock Hill that boasts 24 taps flowing at all times.

You can tour the local breweries en masse or one at a time by following the YoCo Brew Trail, the brainchild of breweries that banded together and partnered with Visit York County to create the experience.

The partners have made it easy for local beer devotees to sample different craft concoctions. Just download the Visit York County app on your smart phone, sign up for the Brew Trail, and you’ll see the YoCo pub listings along with hours and details about each one.

Once you’ve checked into six or more locations on the app, you can earn a T-shirt with the “YoCo Brew Trail” logo on the front and “I Drank My Way Through York County” on the back.

Your local nanobrewery

A microbrewery’s production is much smaller than a craft brewery’s six million barrels. It doesn’t exceed 15,000 barrels a year.

Then there’s a nanobrewery — small and independent, like a microbrewery — but one that produces just three barrels of a brew at a time. That translates to less than 100 gallons per batch.

Clearly, the pub is doing something right. Lake Wylie Brewing recently expanded by opening a second location on Hands Mill Highway.

It’s got plenty of outdoor seating. Food trucks stop by on weekends to supplement the pub’s liquid refreshment.

Brew your own

A nanobrewery or microbrewery often emerges when a passionate hobbyist is ready to move to the next level. But novices can concoct their own craft beer for personal use right in their own homes.

If you’re among those who’d like to try your hand at crafting your own beer, local providers and enthusiasts stand ready to help.

Family-owned Carolina Brew Supply in Rock Hill opened as a home brew store for beer buffs. Today, the shop continues to provide a range of brewing gear for hobbyists but also offers wine making classes, beer making classes, and its own pub-style brewery where customers can sample in-house craft beer.

The pub’s 5-gallon batches show customers that they don’t need fancy equipment to make good beer.

You can also check out Alternative Beverage in Belmont, which has been around since 1973 and has played an important role in Charlotte’s craft beer industry explosion.

“Each day that I work, when I am in contact with customers getting started in beer or wine making for the first time,” says owner Jess Faucette. “I draw off their newfound excitement and it renews my spirit.”

For encouragement, tips, and camaraderie, look to fellow home brewers in the Upper Palmetto Zymurgy Homebrew Society, formed in 2016. The group includes beginners, pros,

Society members also boost their beer IQs with friendly competitions and tastings to compare their latest home brews with others’.

Make enough batches and tweak them often enough, and you may become the next Jeremy, an Upper Palmetto Zymurgy member whose Tour de Face craft brew has become a group favorite and occasionally fills the Lake Wylie Brewery taps.

Or you may become the club’s go-to for brown ale or light IPA. Or perhaps you’ll develop your own signature craft beer.

ome of the best things in life are free. In this case, it’s a couple acres of holiday lights for the community to enjoy, courtesy of Annette and Tim Cooper of Lake Wylie.

You’ll find the colorful jumble of LEDs, inflatables, and figures at the intersection of Highway 274 and Harper Davis Road in Lake Wylie, shortly after Thanksgiving.

Annette has dubbed it “Cooper’s Christmas Chaos,” but don’t let the name fool you.

The lights may appear as a hodgepodge of Santas and Grinches and snowmen, but there’s an organized system of extension cords to keep the entire operation aglow.

And it’s energized by a consistent undercurrent of goodwill: one neighbor sharing her love for lights with others during the holiday season.

Small beginnings

Annette has lived in Lake Wylie her entire life. She and Tim met during high school and once they married, the couple built their home on family land. Her adventure into outdoor décor started small, first with a bit of Halloween fun in the autumn followed by a handful of Christmas decorations.

It was about 2014, best she can recall, that Annette noticed large inflatables were more

readily available in stores and increasingly popular on lawns. She’d always decorated with outdoor lights during the holidays, but now and Tim began including the oversized blowups to their expansive yard. “It’s not like I started out thinking we’d have a large display,” says Annette. “I just see things I think are cute and then I buy them for my yard.” Each year, she adds 10-15 items to her collection.

And she doesn’t wait until the end of the season to make her selections, because “all the good stuff is gone by then.” Instead, Annette scours early-season flyers from Lowe’s, Big Lots, and Home Depot (her favorite) and finds large-scale decorations that she likes.

Her sisters Cindy and Melissa purchase inflatables as birthday gifts for her, too.

Annette estimates that her collection now numbers between 100-125 inflatables and figures – and it continues to grow each year.

There are also thousands of tree lights, house lights, spotlights, and light projectors scattered across the Cooper property that contribute to the “chaos.”

Chaos a bit at a time

The “chaos” is set up bit by bit. Annette strings lights on trees as soon as leaves drop in November. But the real push, she says, happens during Thanksgiving week. While other locals are jamming the stores on Black Friday,

Annette is hoisting stars and candy canes into position, all interconnected with a mishmash of extension cords that crisscross the yard.

“The goal is to flip the switch on Thanksgiving evening,” says Annette. “But I’m never ready by then.” Once a few items are in the yard and connected to power, the Coopers turn on the lights each evening and leave them on for several hours. Even on windy nights, you can drive by and see the lights, although inflatables are down to prevent accidents. The only time the Cooper house remains dark is during rain or sleet.

Annette continues to set up items in the display even beyond the first week in December. That’s one reason she and Tim encourage visitors to return more than once during the season.

Does she have a favorite decoration? A few years ago, Annette found an inflatable with Santa on a tractor and purchased it for her father, who farmed. “We were able to display it in his yard for several years,” says Annette.

“Once he passed away I added it to our display in his memory and so that every time I see it, I think of him.”

A spike in visitors

When friends began asking about the holiday display as early as September, Annette’s niece Jessica started a “Cooper’s Christmas

Chaos” Facebook page. There, the family fields questions and makes announcements.

But it was in 2020, when people were desperate for socially distanced holiday activities, that the Facebook page membership spiked. Meanwhile, Annette used the Next Door app to invite the public to drive by the display. Numbers grew so much that at times, cars parked up and down Harper Davis Road, even blocking the Cooper driveway. Yet they remained orderly, says Annette. “And our neighbors have been amazingly gracious – even enthusiastic – about the lights.”

In 2020 the Coopers also added a mailbox for letters to Santa to the display, also designed by Jessica. It’s placed at the roadside so children could drop in their wish list to the big guy.

And they do. Plus, when children include their return address, they receive a response from St. Nick himself – routed through Jessica’s capable hands. One little boy’s letter return letter from Santa was even delivered by the Elf on the Shelf.

Spectators join the chaos

On December evenings, Annette frequently moves among the bells and stars to adjust the décor, giving spectators the chance to stop to express their thanks. “I just picked up my brother from the airport to visit us for the holidays,” one woman told her. “This is the first place we came.”

Another visitor approached Annette in the yard with a $20 bill, insisting that it be used for electricity. Annette graciously refused.

Even with all the lights and blowers turned

on for four additional hours a day, Coopers’ power bill is up just just $100 or $150 for the month of December. That’s because they’re working to convert all the incandescent lights to LEDs, says Annette, which draw considerably less electricity.

“But that won’t stop me from asking Tim to add some extra electrical outlets this year,” she adds with a grin.

It’s what outside that counts

Once December passes, how hard is it to put away the dozens of blow up Rudolphs, sparkling snowflakes, toy soldiers, and laser light projectors? Peek behind the Cooper’s home and you’ll see a detached garage. Its second floor is dedicated to storing the Christmas chaos.

The Coopers pack away the décor in assembly-line fashion. Annette sits at the top of the shed stairs while Tim hands her items one by one. The inflatables are easiest, says Annette, because they compact tightly. She stuffs them around oversized plastic figures like she’s building a Jenga tower. Three industrial-sized Rubbermaid tubs contain the dozens and dozens of extension cords that make the chaos come alive.

Why go to the trouble and expense of such an undertaking each year? “I love the holiday season,” says Annette. “I want to share that with others.”

That’s why it surprises many to know that Annette doesn’t decorate indoors for holidays. She blames her cat, Romeo, who passed away in early 2021 at age 16. His objections to tinsel and bows prevented Annette from

hanging stockings and trimming a tree inside.

Instead, the rest of us get the benefit of Annette’s colorful outdoor joy. Even her sister Melissa, who lives across the street from Coopers, avoids decorating her own yard during the holidays. Instead, she places a lighted “Ditto” sign at the road with an arrow pointing to her sister’s chaotic display.

And since the Coopers’ home fronts a well-traveled Highway 274, there’s no question that thousands have benefitted from her efforts, whether inadvertently as they happen by or purposefully by planning an outing with family and friends to see the Christmas chaos.

Which proves that one person can make a difference for others. Sometimes, it’s with lights. LW

Moped to Memphis Frank Falls’ Class Project Turns Into $1 Million in Gifts for St. Jude’s Hospital

hen Clover High School history teacher Frank Falls took on his first class of seniors, he knew he needed a class project.

“These kids were getting ready to graduate in a few months,” says Frank. “Before they entered adulthood, I wanted to help them to understand the importance of serving their community.” So one day, as the students drifted into class, Frank listed five charities on the blackboard and told them to pick one as their project.

After a brief discussion, the students voted by private ballot. The choice was unanimous: the students selected St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital as the focus of their efforts.

Located in Memphis, Tenn., St. Jude’s treats children who face the toughest childhood diseases, particularly leukemia and other childhood cancers.

Frank’s students got to work by conducting pizza drives and asking for donations at school. As long as they were raising money, Frank told them, he would continue to grow his beard.

By the time the seniors graduated, they’d raised $3,200. One hundred percent of the proceeds went to St. Jude’s.

year. The students went on with their lives.

That summer, Frank shaved his beard. But for him, the project had only just begun.

Ride a moped to Memphis

When the next fall rolled around, Frank repeated the project but expanded it. He challenged the students to raise at least $6,200 – ten dollars for each of the 622 miles between Clover and Memphis. If students met the goal, Frank told them, he would ride a moped to Memphis and deliver proceeds to St. Jude’s in person.

Energized by the previous year’s success and motivated to best their predecessors, the students set about to meet the challenge. They carried on the tradition of pizza drives but also designed and sold t-shirts and stickers at school and at local events in Clover.

The addition of the moped gave the cause its name: Moped to Memphis (M2M).

But while the students were busy raising funds, Frank faced his own challenge. He didn’t have a moped. And he didn’t know how to ride one. He searched for used mopeds on Craigslist and the internet, but “couldn’t find anything that looked safe to ride from Clover High to Bethany Elementary School, let alone the 622 miles I needed to travel to Memphis.”

Then Frank contacted local bike retailers – and found a listening ear and like-minded heart in Tim Juntgen, the owner of Carolina Fun Machines (Stallings, NC), who donated a top-of-the-line scooter to the cause.

Frank took riding lessons and obtained his motorcycle license. Practice rides followed, first to the grocery store, then to further points like York and Rock Hill.

During that second year, M2M students quadrupled proceeds over the first year and raised $16,500.

And Frank was off to Memphis. On a moped.

Class project becomes a community movement

Since then, Moped to Memphis fundraising efforts have multiplied with each class of seniors. The 2009-2010 school year marked the first edition of the Womanless Beauty Pageant, which has become one of the charity’s most popular events. The pageant draws 1,200 spectators each year cheering for 15 male contestants who vie for the title in talent, interview, and evening gown competition segments – in drag – to raise money for St. Jude’s.

ey through M2M adult proms, rock concerts, cookie sales, casino nights, 5K races, Little Miss and Little Master Moped pageants, the annual Moped to Memphis golf tournament at Kings Mountain Country Club – even online Bingo games during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Along the way, community members grasped Frank’s vision, saw the fun, and got involved. In 2015, Moped to Memphis incorporated as a nonprofit organization, governed by a board of directors with support from an active all-volunteer operations committee.

All fundraising proceeds, from scooter raffles to sticker sales, go to St. Jude’s.

“People of all ages throughout the community think of ways to raise money for M2M,” says Frank. “But honestly, St. Jude sells itself.

People give because of the kids at St. Jude.”

Every year since 2009, Frank has delivered a check to St. Jude’s on a moped. And every year, Carolina Fun Machines ponies up to donate two M2M mopeds: one for Frank to ride to Memphis and one to be raffled off new during the year. Prior to the ride to Memphis, Frank’s scooter gets plastered with sponsors’ stickers sold at $300 each. When the team returns to Clover, the moped is auctioned off, generating an additional $3,000 or more for the cause A small entourage of up to twelve travels with Frank, including a handful of students.

There’s a pace car in front, followed by Frank on the moped, and the return truck and trailer (for transporting the moped home) bringing up the rear.

Once at St. Jude’s, a patient hosts a tour for the group. It is those tours, Frank says, that have had the greatest impact on him and have allowed him to get to know St. Jude’s patients and their families. There’s been Caleigh in Saluda, SC … Carter in Fort Mill, SC … and Ellison, currently in a N.E.D. assignation (No Evidence of Disease).

“We’re able to help these families with visits, support, and goodie baskets donated by partners,” says Tracy Stiff, a M2M board member and supporter. “Getting to know these children and their families is life-changing.”

A million reasons to ride

It was in 2010 that Frank tossed out “a stupid, crazy goal” to students and M2M partners. Why not try to raise $1 million for St. Jude by 2020?

Faces Moped to Memphis reached that goal on August 4, 2021, just a few months shy of their self-imposed deadline. The three final gifts, each $1, pushed the total over the million-dollar finish line. Each was each donated by three children whose siblings had been treated at St. Jude’s.

Meanwhile, Frank’s students are now dreaming of the second million they will raise.

“M2M changes these kids,” says Frank.

“If you’re going to accomplish a fundraising event, it just doesn’t happen automatically. I think working on M2M gives students a better perspective of working as a team.” Former student Preston Hill, for instance, participated in the womanless beauty pageant three years in a row while at Clover High School. After graduation, Preston attended the University of South Carolina, but still returns to Clover to help with M2M events.

Yet of all the people who have partnered with M2M over the years, Frank readily admits that he is the person who has changed the most.

“In 2008, I faced a lot of changes in my personal life,” says Frank. Like his students, he needed a project. St. Jude’s became that project.

LISTENERS Kindermusik Fosters Listening and Learning in Lake Wylie’s Youngest

T

he quack of a duck can help your child to listen well and develop stronger language skills.

A duck? Yes. It happens in Kindermusik, the early childhood learning program that uses music and movement during the years that are most crucial for a child’s brain development.

Step into a Kindermusik class, says local instructor Jeanette Swiderski, and you’ll be surrounded by two- and 3-yearolds who get ready to listen to a new sound. With the rest of the group, you rub your ears to prepare. You sit quietly, waiting for what’s to come. Then, the duck honks over the speakers. You and your group identify the sound.

“It’s a duck!” And together with the rest of the class, you imitate the quack.

That kind of activity leads Kindermusik preschoolers to recognize tunes and rhythms – then pitch and the timbres of different musical instruments as they move into the early elementary years – and ultimately, melodies in a Mozart

symphony.

While Kindermusik has been around for fifty years, dozens of local families now benefit from the Kindermusik experience in Lake Wylie thanks to Swiderski, a certified instructor and coach, as they meet each week in a multi-sensory Kindermusik experience.

And while they’re developing a love for music, they’re also learning much more.

What Is Kindermusik?

During the 1960s, a group of music educators in Germany developed the noted “Musikalische Fruherziehung” program (“music for the young child”) as a way for young children to experience the joy of music before beginning formal instruction. In the late 1970s, the program was brought to the United States and named Kindermusik, which translated from German means “children’s music.”

The program capitalizes on the first few years of a child’s life. Those are the

most intensive for acquiring speech and language skills, according to developmental experts at the National Institutes of Health. Listening and speaking develop best in a world that is rich with sounds, sights, and consistent exposure to the speech and language of others. Music-making provides that complete workout for both brain and body: ears listen, fingers move, mouths form words.

Music becomes the vehicle for multisensory learning with highly structured, ritual-based classes to give young children a sense of consistency. “The first step is to help the children feel safe and secure,” Jeannette says. “Once that happens, the magic of music kicks in.”

For some little ones, the magic happens while singing a welcome song. For others it’s mimicking a fingerplay, joining in traditional nursery rhyme, bouncing to a beat, clapping in rhythm, or dancing with a refrain.

But the gains are not just in stomping, playing, kicking, jumping, and singing

Independent studies confirmed that Kindermusik students demonstrated 32% greater gains in language and literacy skills as measured by the Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) Pre-K Assessment.

Those benefits don’t surprise Jeanette, who got connected to Kindermusik in a very personal way nearly three decades ago.

A musician from her childhood, Swiderski launched her own music studio, The Piano Lab, in Utica, NY, that soon employed additional instructors in piano and voice. When she heard about Kindermusik she enrolled her youngest son, a toddler, and attended classes with him.

“I was intrigued,” Jeannette said, who by then had been teaching music for a decade.

“What could we possibly do with music and babies in a class setting?”

What she saw, says Jeanette, was a different approach to music. As a piano teacher, she was used to helping her students make progress. Each week, a student practiced new exercises or learned a new skill, gradually building mastery.

But Kindermusik emphasizes the experience of music itself. “It’s about the process of making music,” Jeanette said. “Rather than focusing on preparing for a performance.”

Jeanette wanted to be part of the movement. She became certified as a Kindermusik instructor and subsequently launched her

first Kindermusik class with just three students. Over the years, she built The Piano Lab’s studio to earn a Kindermusik “Top Program” designation. Meanwhile, she coached other Kindermusik instructors as they acquired certification and skills and added them to her staff.

How Kindermusik came to Lake Wylie

Jeanette and her husband retired to Lake Wylie three years ago. She left teaching behind while The Piano Lab remained open with her daughter at the helm, managing its Kindermusik, voice, and piano instructors.

But Jeanette found she missed watching children light up at the sound of music. Since there was no local Kindermusik presence, she approached staff at the Lake Wylie Library and Julia Hoak at Adagio School of Dance.

Would they allow her to conduct demo Kindermusik classes to share the learning experience with local families?

The answer was a resounding yes. Jeanette started with just a handful of interested families, but word quickly spread and classes have expanded organically, without any need for marketing. “Once parents see Kindermusik in action, they’re hooked,” says Jeanette.

Now, just a couple of years later, Jeanette offers classes for newborns up through age 7 in rented space at the Adagio School of Dance’s Charlotte Highway location.

The 2020 lockdown seemingly did not affect Kindermusik devotees both locally and nationally, who simply logged on to virtual classes with their children and used the digital home materials on alternate days to reinforce the skills learned.

Jeanette’s students were no exception.

And since parents are involved in every session, it was natural for families to log on together to sing, jump, move, and clap.

In September 2020, Jeanette returned to in-person sessions following strict social distancing and safety protocols.

The 45-minute classes accommodate up to twelve children plus a parent. “A lot of these groups bond with each other and return month after month,” says Jeanette. Because the Kindermusik curriculum spans seven years, it’s easy to see how connections are formed. It’s a boon for parents of children of all developmental stages, including those with autism or other special needs. Children not only make music and move together, but they also develop social skills and confidence.

Feature And they take their Kindermusik skills home. “I love seeing how excited SaraAnn is to explore new instruments and interact with her classmates,” says parent Stephanie Cope.

Her daughter, now in her second year of Kindermusik, mimics scarf play at home. One of her favorite toys are the egg shakers she was introduced to during Kindermusik.

“SaraAnn has gone from a shy child who hid behind her mom to running around the room with her Kindermusik friends and hugging Miss Jeanette,” adds Stephanie. “It makes my momma heart happy!”

Benefits beyond music

Beyond confidence, brain growth, memory, and concentration, Jeanette sees her tiny musicians develop one overarching skill: focused listening.

But it’s not just her own observations and research data that demonstrate the power of Kindermusik on little listeners, Jeanette says.

Other classroom teachers have taken notice.

And teachers talk with other teachers. As they share with Jeanette about a particular student’s excellent listening skills, a reference to Kindermusik inevitably pops up. “It’s easy to identify a child who has been in Kindermusik

A

nna can’t wait to pick out her Christmas tree.

Every day on her ride to school, the five-year-old checks the special lot at the River Hills back gate. Once it’s filled with fresh cut spruce trees and wreaths and garlands, she’s going to insist that her family hightail down there. They’ll only have a week or so until the trees are sold out. And if she’s lucky, she may even catch a glimpse of Santa Claus weaving in and out of the rows.

Just before Thanksgiving, North Carolina mountain farms deliver a couple hundred fresh trees to the Lions, who staff the station with about eight volunteers a day until supplies are gone.

Along with greenery, the Lions dispense holiday cheer. They’ll even deliver your tree if you ask them to. And once the trees and swags are sold, these lion-hearted volunteers ensure that the sale’s proceeds are funneled back into local charities.

bined with other activities allows the club to give away more than $100,000 every year to local charitable organizations.

Together, we serve

In 1917, Chicago entrepreneur Melvin Jones mobilized his local business club to join forces and work together and address needs in the local community. Their efforts resulted in the first Lions Club.

Now more than a century later, 48,000 Lions Clubs are active across the globe. Their 1.4 million members are civic-minded men and women who band together with a clear purpose: to do the things in their community that they cannot do alone. The Lions’ motto is simple: “We Serve.”

The River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club joined its international counterparts when it was chartered in 1975. Any person of good character is encouraged to apply to join, explains president Richard Ellington.

And plenty have. At last count, the River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club is 143 members strong – the largest Lions Club in both North and South Carolina.

We serve the community

In keeping with its “We Serve” motto, the River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions have infiltrated our community to bring help and hope. Each year, the club carries out at least five major fundraising activities, using the proceeds to directly support charities in Lake Wylie, Clover, and York County.

It comes as a surprise to many that one of the club’s biggest money-makers is the River Hills telephone directory. Ads boost its revenue.

But the directory’s first place standing may soon be challenged by the Lions’ annual benefit golf tournament at River Hills Country Club. This year, 120 participants teed off for the event – the largest turnout to date, says Richard Ellington. The Lions also conduct an annual three-to-one raffle that benefits the River Hills EMS Squad.

But it’s during the holidays when the Lions’ fundraising efforts are most visible to the rest of us in Lake Wylie. Along with the Christmas Tree Sale, the club typically sponsors Breakfast with Santa for about 600 guests. Father

Christmas joins the little ones on a Saturday morning in December for pancakes and scrambled eggs at Camp Thunderbird, where they climb his lap and whisper in his ear – and then climb on the Bethel Fire Department fire trucks, explore the River Hills EMS rescue car, get their faces painted, and decorate cookies.

Never mind that the pandemic has postponed this year’s Santa get-together. Next Christmas is coming.

ute thousands of volunteer hours to benefit the residents of Lake Wylie and Clover.

One of the club’s most significant undertakings is KidSight, a local version of Lions International’s nationwide program that offers vision screenings in area schools.

KidSight started as a trial program in three Clover schools during the 2014-2015 school year when the Lions purchased two handheld vision refractor cameras — one with club funds and another with a grant — and worked with school nurses to arrange scheduling. Now, the project has now grown to provide annual vision screenings in all ten Clover schools, ten York District schools, and half the schools in Rock Hill, says program chairman David Allen.

David and his 25 volunteers rotate in teams to conduct the screenings, devoting four or five days a week to the project. To date, the Lions have screened 54,936 students and have referred more than 6,000 for complete eye exams.

And while a screening takes just 5-10 seconds per student, there’s significant impact for those who do not know they are near-sighted, far-sighted, have astigmatism, lazy eye, or other visual conditions.

In one instance, a Crowder’s Creek kindergartener had normal vision but was referred for gaze misalignment. During the subsequent eye exam, the ophthalmologist discovered a grape-sized, benign tumor on the child’s ocular nerve. Left undetected, the growth could have led to permanent eye damage. “The mom was very thankful for the Lions Club screening,” said Martha Park, the school nurse.

“Without it, the family would not have known about this child’s problem. Things could have turned out much differently.”

Lions serve people other ways in and around Lake Wylie. Just ask the 50-100 under-resourced residents who get eye exams and new glasses or hearing evaluations and hearing aids — courtesy of the Lions.

There are Lions who support the Roaring Readers free book program at Kinard and Bethany Elementary Schools and Lions who serve as mentors at Clover elementary and middle schools. Lions collect used eyeglasses and hearing aid collection at six area locations, amassing about 2,000 pairs of used eyeglasses and a handful of hearing aids each year which are recycled and distributed to charitable organizations. Lions also accept donations of used bicycles, refurbish them, and put them in the hands of needy children.

In 2004, members of the Lions Club formed the River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Community Foundation — an independent entity — as a way to benefit the community in the long term and provide a local philanthropic vehicle for interested residents. The foundation’s board of trustees oversees $1 million in assets to ensure best return. And each year, the foundation contributes about $42,000 to the Lions Club directly, adding to the good that’s done in our community.

How do the Lions decide who gets funding? Each year, its Budget Committee meets to review local needs and distribute financial gifts to groups like Clover Area Assistance Center, the Boys & Girls Clubs in York County, YMCA Camp Thunderbird, Make A Wish Foundation, the Children’s Attention Home, Leader Dogs for the Blind — and a couple dozen more. “If an organization comes to us and says they have a need, we will look at it and see if we can help,” says Richard Ellington.

The club’s size has made a big difference.

Large numbers of River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions mean there are plenty of people to help with local projects and plenty of ways to help neighbors in need. “We have a lot of people doing a lot of different things,” explains Richard.

Market remains robust

s we enter the home stretch of the year, our Lake Wylie real estate market remains robust. There has been a gentle tap on the brakes at the close of third quarter — mainly because there is so little available to sell.

Rising prices and whispers of possible interest rate hikes have also given pause to buyers who have the option to wait to purchase.

However, those who are ready to sell their homes can still find a ready and waiting buyer base. The average time on market for homes sold in York County this year is a mere two weeks.

The bulk of homes sold in York County this year have been in the $300,000 - $600,000 range, and the average sales price is just un48

der $400,000 — up 16% from last year, and up 26% from 2019.

On the average, housing is more affordable in the Clover School District than most other areas of York County. For non-waterfront homes, the average prices per square foot for homes sold in 2021 are as follows: • • • • •

As the population in our greater area continues to grow, we expect real estate sales to continue to flourish into next year. 2021 Year in Review

o one could have predicted what was to come in 2020-2021 and that a pandemic would dominate the year’s concerns and continue for nearly two years. Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce got off to a great start for 2020-2021, then, in March 2020, the pandemic and quarantine hit. The Chamber quickly adapted and helped its members and community, communicating the ever changing information, needs and opportunities. Here is a recap of the variety of the Lake Wylie Chamber’s activities, accomplishments and highlights during the past year and a half:

• Positively promoted Lake Wylie and economic development all year long.

• Adapted the Lake Wylie Visitor Center, located in one of the busiest corridors in the state, to assist visitors and those needing info during the pandemic.

• Held one very special Business After Hours networking event with the support of Comfort Systems of York County and River Hills Marina Club.

• Continued to staff Lake Wylie Visitor Center with a team of volunteers to adapt to the needs during the pandemic and ever-changing circumstances.

• Operated a Small Business Center in Lake Wylie. With seven beautifully furnished rental offices, it has been perfect for several small businesses to adapt and operate during the pandemic, a unique time at Lake Wylie.

• Collaborated with Lake Wylie Today magazine to present appropriate publications during the pandemic that also positively promotes our community and businesses.

• Adapted and safely hosted an outstanding Golf Tournament at River Hills Country Club involving more than 145 members, including sponsors, golfers, volunteers and participants. Fresh air, sunshine and seeing each other while social distancing was 50

greatly appreciated by all who participated.

• Added more than 24 new members.

• Called and communicated personally with more than 200 members during the pandemic to offer support, help and up-todate information as businesses adapted to the circumstances.

• Continued partnership with S. C. Biz News to publish Lake Wylie Today, a premiere, quarterly magazine to promote Lake Wylie’s lifestyle, businesses and events. Lake Wylie Today features the chamber’s Spotlight newsletter and helps to promote and market the area and our members.

• Published 10 full-color page quarterly newsletters in Lake Wylie Today.

• Publishing a new Lake Wylie living newcomers guide for Lake Wylie area.

• Enhanced E-communication capability by utilizing chamber “e-communications.”

• Presented digital marketing workshops to members for free and utilized chamber facility for CE training locally during pandemic.

• Coordinated, presented and sponsored the 30th annual Lights on the Lake boat parade.

• Participated with CSD, Clover and York Chambers with the Impact Program to create a program for Workforce Development training at schools paused during pandemic.

• Actively supported the many local service organizations such as Lake Wylie Rotary Club, River Hills Lions Club, and others.

• Organized a coat collection drive, toy drive for holidays and canned good drives during the pandemic.

• Had new website created and maintained Lake Wylie website and social media 24/7.

• Successfully adapted, implemented business plan goals and objectives.

• Successfully served as legislative liaison with state and federal legislators.

• Worked with other Chambers of Commerce on issues and areas of common interest and concern.

• Actively supported economic development efforts and issues.

• Supported the efforts at Lake Wylie Park and collaborated to have ribbon cutting.

• Promoted new park and its events during the year.

• Developed and collaborated to publish Lake Wylie materials to support members and tourism.

• Worked with DHEC, Atrium Health, and others to inform, via social media, information on COVID-19, SBA loan info and useful opportunities for businesses.

• Continued support for “Going Green” efforts at Lake Wylie to include Adopt-astream and coves and storm drain marking program at Lake Wylie.

• Worked with a variety of economic development prospects that have now selected Lake Wylie to launch or locate their businesses. (even during COVID 19) • Worked to initiate, coordinate and/or support a variety of community projects and charitable efforts, including food drives, pet supply drives, school supplies and other groups efforts.

• Supported members and their efforts to promote economic development and growth and prosperity for the community.

• Promoted and marketed Lake Wylie throughout the year via materials, magazines, visitor center, speaking engagements, digital marketing and promotional events.

Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to and planning a healthy, active and productive year for 2022.

This year it is more important than ever.

As the holiday rapidly approaches, avoid the traffic, save time, stay safe, shop locally and support our community and local businesses.

Here are just a few ideas to consider as you prepare for the holiday ahead: Lowes/Lake Wylie and WalMart will have everything for home improvements, holiday décor and gifts for the whole family with their many departments. Shop early as supplies may be limited. You can shop online and then pick up your selected items at the local stores.

Market on Wylie, located by Lake Wylie Plaza, has selections of wine, imported cheeses, salami and gourmet foods. Great for gifts or for making a festive meal at home.

Christmas Trees, wreaths and greenery are available at Walmart and Lowes. River Hills Lion’s Club Charity Tree Lot will be located by the West/back gate of River Hills. Freshy cut trees from the North Carolina mountains will arrive Thanksgiving Week. River Hills Lion’s Club Charity Tree sale is always a great success and usually sells out by mid-December. A short drive into the country you will find Penland Tree Farm and other locations to cut a fresh tree and enjoy a family outing.

Harris Teeter, Walmart, Food Lion and Publix at Lake Wylie will have a full assortment of holiday foods, deli and bakery trays and all your party needs. Harris Teeter, Publix, Food Lions and WalMart all offer online shopping for free or a small fee which can make your holiday meal shopping a breeze. Lake Wylie Liquors offers a terrific variety of competitively priced party and gift items during the holidays and is conveniently located on Highway 49 and Evergreen Road.

Gift Certificates make a great gift. Who wouldn’t love to receive a gift certificate for lunch or dinner or a takeout meal at one of our local restaurants? The variety gives many choices. Papa Doc’s Shore Club offers great views, Rey Azteca and Azteca Grill offer Mexican fare for lunch and dinner and Lake Wylie Pizza and Italian even delivers! Copper Premium Pub has covered outdoor dining and even a fire pit and is open for lunch, dinner and take out. A gift certificate from Lily’s Bistro, Christopher’s, Chef ’s Kitchen (formerly The River Rat and The Cove location), or Famous Toastery is always a nice gift to give or receive.

Jackson’s Kitchen Catering makes entertaining easy and family holiday meal preparation a breeze. (order early). For those with less time to dine, there are gift certificates at McDonald’s, Sub-Way, Wendy’s, Jersey Mike’s, Zaxby’s, Dunkin Donuts, Moe’s Southwest, Lee’s Hoagies, Arby’s, Kochi Japanese Steakhouse, Thai Fusion and Bojangles. A Gift Certificate from the Bagel Boat of Lake Wylie is sure to be a favorite gift or stocking stuffer. Who doesn’t love a mocha, hot cocoa or coffee at the holidays and on these cold winter days? And the bagels and sandwiches are always delicious. Fast Frog Bakery features beautiful and clever holiday treats and baked goods that make a special and perfect gift and for home. Orders can be placed ahead also. Fast Frog Bakery located on Highway 55 near Highway 49 by what has been known as 5 Points has fresh and homemade cookies, desserts, cakes, chicken salad and breads sure to delight family, friends and neighbors. These are just a few of the choices and ideas to shop locally this holiday season.

If meals don’t appeal to your gift giving ideas, think about other gift certificates for manicures and pedicures available at the Nail Gallery and Nail Palace, a great massage from one of our local massage therapists including Jeani Rogers at A Caring Environment -- a relaxing massage is always a treat. A gift certificate with a personal trainer also could make a nice gift. The Office Gym and Fitness Center (formerly Sportscenter location) and Anytime Fitness provide Gift Certificates to begin a healthy new year with a fitness plan and memberships. A YMCA family membership can be enjoyed all year long. A car wash or detail at a local carwash also makes a nice gift.

And for our family pets, Bright Eyes and Bushy Tails pet grooming and supplies located in Waterside West makes a great spot to get gifts for pets or a gift certificate for grooming and services. Petsense located at Shoppes at the Landing also offers pet grooming and supplies

and treats for pets.

Coastal Cottage, located in Plantation Square has a variety of nice gift items to choose from.

Lake Wylie Bowl N’ Bounce is a favorite place for families and groups to gather this winter. Gift Certificates are available and this treat will make good stocking stuffers or gifts for the whole family.

he Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce continues “Neighbors helping Neighbors” Charity Drive. This year, unwrapped new toys and checks for Clover Area Assistance Center can be dropped of at United Bank – Lake Wylie on the corner of Hwy. 49 and 274 at Lake Wylie from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday beginning on Nov. 19 to Dec. 16. During the pandemic, we especially ask for our neighbors to give generously and do what you can to help our neighbors in need of a little extra help. Holidays are a time to share, love and be charitable. If everyone helps by dropping off a new toy and/or or check, collectively, we can make a difference to many. If you are unable to shop for the needed items, checks are always welcome too. Make checks to Clover Area Assistance Center and mail to PO Box 521, Clover, SC 29710.
