CARING IN TIMES OF DIFFICULTY

I

f I were asked to describe our community these past few months during the coronavirus pandemic, it would be “caring in times of difficulty.” We have experienced a quarantine and sudden shutdown of businesses, then a gradual reopening with care and caution for all.

Not surprisingly during this time, our chamber, community groups and clubs coordinated food drives to benefit the Clover Area Assistance Center and launched school supply drives once plans were determined for the opening of this school year. YMCA Camp Thunderbird launched a “Back to School” program to help kids with homework and virtual learning and to offer daycare for essential workers, teachers, first responders and other families who might need support. Neighbors have been helping neighbors. Restaurants donated meals to first responders and medical workers. On social media, we have shared local news and information to help businesses and individuals get COVID-19 updates, from where to apply for PPP and EILD loan programs to where to get masks, signs, and infrared thermometers. We have seen a lot of caring in troubled times. The season of giving at Lake Wylie is all year long.

As we welcome fall and the beauty it brings, we present this issue of Lake Wylie Today with an assortment of features showcasing new and good things happening in our community. The new Field Day Park of Lake Wylie is opening after nearly 15 years of vision, efforts, meetings and work by many. Our District 2 Councilmen, Perry Johnston and Tom Smith, and the park committee have worked through the

years to see this park become a reality. Councilwoman Allison Love has added her ideas to the plan to ensure a variety of recreational offerings were included. The community supported and passed a special tax district to fund the operations and maintenance of the park.

The photos and story are in this issue of LWT. A new and popular activity in the area is pickleball. What is pickleball, you might ask?

This issue has a feature about the game and its origins, how it is played and where you can play around here.

The Shoreline section features the Retiree Regatta and the story of those who love the water and sailing and how they gather for competition and fun on Lake Wylie throughout the year.

Food for Thought features a story about Chef Rob Hagan, one of our newest and youngest chefs here in Lake Wylie, from learning to love to cook from his grandma to gaining experience and formal training and his journey to become the chef at River Hills Country Club. And now is a great time to enjoy the abundance of local farm-fresh produce. Updates and ideas are shared to inspire readers to support our local farm stands and businesses.

Have you seen the murals popping up around Lake Wylie? A local father/son duo is beautifying our area with artwork and murals on the sides of buildings — one at a time. Guest writer Matthew Mugavero has written the story telling all about the artists and their work.

The Chamber actively promotes the community and its businesses. Due to the pandemic, it has been unable to host the popular events and business after hours, but the chamber has been busy supporting, helping and promoting the businesses and community. It is working to be innovative and meet the needs of the present as well as position for future needs of our businesses and community.

The Development Update is a regular feature that tells readers about the real estate climate in the area, with trends, data and photos that many find helpful. It is always good to learn that the market is strong and the demand is high.

Of course, the magazine is full of photos of the area and its beauty. Home and garden tour canceled Scholarship awarded despite pandemic

D

espite COVID-19 obstructing their way and cancelling their major fundraiser, members of the Clover-Lake Wylie Republican Women pressed on and raised money to support their yearly scholarship fund.

This year’s winner of the Fay Bergman Scholarship is Chloe Christine Currie.

The daughter of Lee and Lizabeth Currie, Chloe will attend the College of Charleston and plans to major in biology, hoping to eventually work as an epidemiologist. While in high school, Chloe worked at the Bagel Boat restaurant for three years.

Held each year in April, the Lake Wylie Home and Garden Tour has showcased statement homes in this lakeside community and outlying regions for nearly 40 years.

To thank sponsors, CLWRW’s board, scholarship committee and scholarship winner hand delivered certificates of appreciation to each participating business donor.

“I’m so honored to be the recipient of the 2020 scholarship,” Chloe said. “Words cannot express my gratitude, and because it was such an extraordinary year, your support means even more. Donors like you have made it possible for women in Clover to have brighter futures.”

The home tour funds the Fay Bergman Scholarship, which is awarded to a qualified graduating student in the Clover High School attendance area. Up to three scholarships have been given yearly, depending on the number of home tour tickets sold and on the generosity of sponsors. While only one scholarship was awarded this year, CLWRW will provide a stipend to each of last year’s three previous winners.

with the assistance to achieve a higher education, we have increased her opportunity for a promising future,” Rozalynn Federline, president of CLWRW said. “Republican women always find a way to succeed and make a positive difference.”

A passionate Republican, Fay Bergman performed as a dancing Nixon Belle when President Richard Nixon’s plane landed in Charlotte during his presidency in the early ’70s, according to legend.

With several other local women, Bergman started a Republican club in this area and served as the first president of the Clover-Lake Wylie Republican Women’s Club from 1988 to 1991. In 1996 she served a second term as president.

In 2013 the club decided that Bergman, one of CLWRW’s most ardent members, should have an annual scholarship named in her honor. Since then, the organization has hosted the annual Lake Wylie Home and Garden Tour to fund the Fay Bergman Scholarship. Bergman passed away at the age of 94 in 2016 in North Carolina.

Greenspace up for vote in November

W

hat began as a simple thought for our community has grown into an initiative that many see as a way to save land for greenspace in the Bethel/Lake Wylie area. This fall, residents will have the opportunity to vote for greenspaces over more density and traffic.

In a 4-0 vote, the York County Council approved the adoption of the resolution certifying the petition seeking the establishment of a special tax district known as the Bethel/Lake Wylie Land Acquisition and Preservation Park District. More that 3,500 registered voters in the Bethel/Lake Wylie area signed a petition earlier

this summer to put this initiative in motion.

“There has been huge community support for this,” Ricky Brake, co-chair of the Committee for Community Greenspace said. “We had over 70 volunteers collecting signatures to meet the requirement to get this on the Nov. 3 ballot.

“The real work starts now,” Brake said. “We have a limited time to get information out to the voters. Both long-time residents and newcomers to the Bethel and Lake Wylie area have an interest in parks and amenities. This is the opportunity to create greenspace in the community and check some amenities off the list of needs and wants.”

Residents in numerous forums have repeatedly called for more usable greenspace in neighborhood HOA meetings, York County Planning and Services department sponsored surveys and community drop-ins. The creation of a Small Area Plan, including most of the Bethel/Lake Wylie area approved by the York County Council, was based on public 8

Land purchased by the District must be used for community accessible amenities.

Playgrounds, passive recreation, farmers market, community gardens and a dog park are examples of things people have asked about.

Acquisition and preservation of local historical properties can also be considered.

As with the Bethel Fire Tax District, a five-member board would be selected and approved by York County Council to oversee the Park District budget. Board members must live within the Bethel/Lake Wylie area to serve.

Annual expenses may not exceed $500,000.

Capital requirement borne by the district not to exceed $10 million in construction/land acquisition costs. The proposed tax would not

exceed 5 mils per year and that is equivalent to $20 per year per $100,000 value owner occupied home. For example, a $300,000 home would incur a maximum $60 per year tax.

T

he Lake Wylie Rotarians were very happy to get together to draw the winners of the Green with Rotary Raffle. The raffle was originally scheduled for March 17. Due to Covid-19, they were unable to meet and the drawing was postponed. In mid-May, they were finally able to enjoy fun and fellowship, while still social distancing, to draw the winners. The grand prize was $5,000 cash and there were 25 additional prizes valued at $100 each. The generous donors and the winners are listed on the website, lakewylierotary.org.

YMCA Camp Thunderbird launches special Back to School program

C

amp Thunderbird is stepping up to help essential workers, first responders, teachers, medical professionals, kids and families with a new “Back to School” program.

Camp T-Bird adapted the 100-acre camp for summer campers to social distance and follow COVID-19 guidelines so it seemed appropriate to offer kids and families a new program to assist with help with homework, virtual learning and daycare for K- Sixth Grade students.

Camp T-Bird will likely do full day programming with students that includes homework support peppered with some activity and recess time at the beautiful camp.

This is a semester-long commitment, but parents can sign up for 1-5 days a week. For example, if a child only needs to come Mondays and Wednesdays, a family can sign up for those days and they will have a spot to come until Dec. 18.

Currently, parents can sign up for a $25 refundable “save your spot” product for Camp T-Bird’s programs. If the programs ultimately offered don’t match that family’s needs, they will get their $25 back.

This program is a work in progress and will evolve to help families as circumstances change at school.

RHLW Lions Club selects top Lions

T

he River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club has selected Neil Nelson as Lion of the Year. The New Lion of the Year honor went to co-recipients, Don Nowak, and husband-and-wife team, Marc and Marilyn Robboy.

Nelson, sponsored by the Honorable Len Fleet, has been a Lion for five years. He has served as lion tamer, vice president and past president of RHLW Lions. He has also co-chaired the annual pancake breakfast project and served on the golf committee for several years.

Sponsored by Derek Lewis, New Lion of the Year Don Nowak joined the club in October. He served on the pancake breakfast committee responsible for generating donations from businesses and was a salesperson for the annual directory project.

Sail Boaters Claim the Lake During Weekly Sailing Races

O

n Thursday morning at 8:45, Charles Wood jumps into his moored sailboat, jacks on the outboard engine, and motors across Lake Wylie to the Catawba Yacht Club. There, he kills the engine and raises the boat’s sails.

Soon, it’s time to move into an assembly area with a half dozen other sailboats. When the three-minute horn sounds, Charles is in position and ready. He lets out the sails and maneuvers his boat across the start line at full speed as the race begins.

About two hours later, Charles and the other skippers have crisscrossed the lake back to the finish line and cheer for that week’s winner.

It’s a scene that’s repeated each Thursday morning among this group of sailing enthusiasts who have claimed the lake for weekly races that they’ve affectionately dubbed as the

Retirees Launch Their Own Regatta On weekends, Lake Wylie is dotted with sailboats, power boats, jet skis, and fishing boats in and around the Buster Boyd Bridge.

But weekday mornings during peak boating season are another matter. You have to look hard to spot just one or two boats as they break the lake’s smooth surface.

That’s why a group of seasoned sail boaters came up with an idea: why not take advantage of the lake’s relative calm during the weekdays while other boaters are typically at work?

“One day, I looked around at our group of racers and noticed that many of us are retired or have flexible work schedules,” says Ron Wright, a sail boater and officer with Catawba Yacht Club (CYC). He approached some of the regulars about conducting

weekday races when there’s less traffic on the lake. Others agreed. In early 2020, the group launched weekly daytime sailing races that nearly guarantee that they have the lake to themselves.

Extended Series Regattas Welcome All Sail Boaters The band of racers are members of the Catawba Yacht Club (CYC), a nonprofit group of people who enjoy water sports on Lake Wylie.

Membership is divided fairly evenly between sailors and rowers. Of the 50 sailing members, a handful sail on the lake purely for pleasure.

Most enjoy racing.

CYC accommodates them with sailing regattas – a series of boat races – throughout the calendar year, with Extended Series regattas as the mainstay of the club’s schedule. In this format, sail boat-

Shoreline ers participate in a sequence of races that are spread (“extended”) over a season (spring, summer, fall, and winter). Each skipper accumulates a total score in the series and at the conclusion of the season’s last regatta race, the winner takes home the trophy.

CYC schedules its Extended Series races on weekends during the fall, winter, and spring.

But during the summer, the club moves its races to Tuesday evenings and leaves the lake to other boaters to enjoy on the weekends. The Retiree Regatta is CYC’s first weekday Extended Series.

Sail boaters of all abilities can race, thanks to the club’s PHRF (Performance Handicap Racing Fleet) ratings. Like other athletic handicaps, racers are assigned a PHRF value that is subtracted from their race times to give them a final score. “The handicapping system allows any sailor in any boat to participate and be competitive,” explains Ron Wright. Club membership is not required in order to participate in CYC-hosted regattas. Non-members pay a small fee that helps to cover costs for season trophies.

A Regatta Where Everyone Is Competitive The Retiree Regatta is comprised of nine races, conducted on consecutive Thursdays.

On the last day of the series, the retirees total up the scores and declare a winner.

The emphasis, says Ron Wright, is fun. The Retiree Regatta is structured as a Pursuit Series, which employs the handicapped system but staggers race start times. This eliminates a crowded start line. In a Pursuit Series, racers line up their boats from slowest to fastest, depending upon their handicaps, and cross the start line at the appropriate time. Each sail boater starts the race with his handicap behind him, so he knows his status during an actual race.

“Ideally, with the handicap system, we’d all finish at the same time,” says Charles Wood.

“But each race is different. I’ve got one of the largest handicaps in the group, but I recently placed third in our Thursday race.”

Shoreline Bridge, loop around the buoys, and return to the club. On “light wind days,” the competitors add an additional loop to the course by passing the club on the return and sailing south to the Beaver Dam Creek buoy before heading back to CYC. Either way, the regatta’s Pursuit Course takes about two hours to complete on a “good wind day” when breezes are between six and seven miles per hour.

But conditions on the lake change not only week to week but hourly and can impact how a sailboat and its skipper perform.

To make it easier for racers to predict what the course will be like for them on a given day, this spring the club installed a weather station on its waterfront gazebo. The station’s weathervane, perched 15 feet into the air above the gazebo roof, tracks real time wind speed and

temperature. “To check what the wind speed and conditions are like on the lake, all I need to do is log onto Weatherlink.com and click on Catawba Yacht Club,” says Charles Wood.

“You can bet if it’s 10 to 15 miles an hour, I’m going to choose one of my sails that’s appropriate for stronger winds.”

Retirees (and Others) Race Every Thursday Morning In addition to its extended series, the Catawba Yacht Club hosts at least three standalone holiday Pursuit Course races. The Memorial Day Regatta kicks off the summer sailing season. A Pursuit Regatta on July 4 is conducted early in the day before fireworks dominate the lake and the regatta on Labor Day closes out the summer. Members who are passionate about a single type of sailboat can race in CYC’s One-Design regattas by sailing the MC Scow, a 16-foot sailboat that’s manned by just one or two people.

Shoreline The club also hosts an annual full weekend sailing event, Old Brown Dog Regatta, in early November, which draws sail boaters from up and down the east coast and as far away as Canada.

As for the retirees? They’ll stick to their handicapped Pursuit Course races on Thurs-

days during boating season. CYC continually monitors each sailor’s handicap and adjusts start times accordingly so that boats of all sizes and sail boaters of all abilities can race.

In fact, you needn’t be retired to be a part of the Retiree Regatta. Charles Wood’s co-skipper, Theresa Allen, has a flexible work

schedule that allows her to carve out time for the Thursday races.

“The Retiree Regattas are open to anybody,” says Ron Wright. “We love sailing and love the water. Anyone with sailing fever can join us.”

In a local twist of the nationwide farm-to-table trend, area residents are buying up more produce from nearby farmers to serve at their kitchen tables. And Lake Wylie’s nine-month growing season means there’s plenty of fresh goodness to choose from.

Plus, even in the midst of public health challenges, our local vendors have found creative ways to get more veggies and fruits into our hands.

Farm To Table Keeps Grocery Dollars Local The farm-to-table movement, now about a decade old, promotes serving locally grown food at restaurants. Rather than purchasing fruits and vegetables through a distributor or a food service, a restaurant establishes relationships with growers and buys directly from them. Farmers benefit from the arrangement by keeping more of their profits.

Food establishments benefit because they keep their supply dollars local.

According to the Department of Agriculture, just 7.8 cents of every dollar that Americans spend on food is paid to farmers. But produce bought locally at farmers’ markets, produce stands, or the farm itself yield farmers 90 cents on the dollar. At the heart of the farm-to-table movement is a community’s desire to keep local farmers in business.

Quality and freshness are attractors, too, for both the restaurant and the individual consumer.

“Most of the produce we put in the stand has been picked within the last twenty-four hours or less,” says Susan Hall, co-owner of Bush-N-Vine

Farm in York. While some grocery stores carry a small number of local and organic products, most cannot equal the numbers of fresh fruits and veggies in local farmer’s market bins that have been recently plucked from nearby fields.

Not only that, but health experts say produce stands and farmers markets are among the safest places to shop during the pandemic. “There are benefits to visiting a farmers market in light of coronavirus,” says Yvonne Michael, an epidemiologist at Drexel University School of Public Health. “You’re outside, there’s fresh air moving, and the supply chain is shorter.”

As Lake Wylie residents continue to choose smaller, more local shopping sources, our community produce stands offer them a distinct advantage: food goes through fewer hands, which limits exposure.

November – even later at Bush-N-Vine, where doors stay open year-round. Fresh summer produce, grown locally, is available at least until Halloween.

“We continue to have local tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and corn during the early fall months,” says Barbara Mills, owner of The Produce Barn on South New Hope Road in Belmont, just across the state line. Lettuces, greens, kale, broccoli, and cauliflower fill the shelves, too, along with late season favorites like sweet potatoes, acorn squash, and butternut squash.

Food for Thought pumpkins, although those are a big draw. “We love sharing muscadine grapes with customers each fall,” says Tim Reid at South Forty Farm in Lake Wylie. Muscadines, a sweet grape discovered by the early colonists, are native to the south. Although muscadines can be grown successfully in most parts of the state, they thrive in hot, humid temperatures and are best adapted in the piedmont and coastal plain.

And while you may think local fresh strawberries are only available in the spring, think again. Bush-N-Vine’s fall strawberry crop begins producing in October and lasts until the first week or two in January, allowing you a special treat during the holidays. “A lot of our customers like our fall berries even better than our spring berries,” says Susan Hall. “They’ve got a drier texture, but they’re really sweet.”

Local Produce Vendors Buy Local, Too Local farmers get to the point in the season when crops are finished producing or in some cases, they don’t grow every crop they want to sell. When that happens, farmers buy local, too – from wholesale vendors – and make the produce available to their customers.

Food traceability is one more element of the farm-to-table movement that helps to guarantee food safety. “A lot of our extra produce comes from York County,” says Barbara Mills at The Produce Barn. a step further in supporting other local vendors: their sales coolers are filled with tomato pies, chicken salad, and pimento cheese made

Local produce vendors have adapted their sales procedures with customer safety in mind, which means extra outdoor bins at South Forty and call-ahead orders with curb service at The Produce Barn.

And current health and safety precautions have been a boon in popularity for Bush-NVine’s Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program. “A lot of people are looking for a way to buy local fresh fruits and vegetables directly from farmers,” says Susan Hall.

“Our CSA program is a fun and convenient way to you can do that.”

Food for Thought CSA consumers register and pay ahead to ensure they’ll have a basket of produce, freshpicked from local farms, each week. Basket sizes range from extra-small (which serves one to two people) to large (accommodating five to six). Baskets are delivered to 13 locations scattered across York County and even in Charlotte, allowing CSA participants to simply drive through and collect their fresh produce once a week. Fall and winter baskets can include lettuce, kale, turnip greens, squash, cauliflower, cabbage, green beans, broccoli, late tomatoes – even raspberries, peaches, and small, edible pumpkins (called butterkins) in the fall and kohlrabi and arugula in the winter.

Which means that as the calendar turns over into the fall months, area restaurants will not be alone in enjoying the benefits of farmto-table freshness.

If you’re like plenty of other local residents, you’ll stop at an area produce stand to choose a pumpkin and nab a basket of apples. But chances are if you’re looking for healthy ways to feed your family, you might find yourself walking out the door with a whole lot more, too. LW

There used to be very few open spaces in Lake Wylie where you could toss a Frisbee.

This fall, that’s no longer the case as the newest community park in York County opens in the heart of Lake Wylie.

ield Day Park, a 32-acre complex located in the Paddlers Cove subdivision, is not just a venue for sporting events. It’s also a place for families gather for a picnic, throw a football, or push a toddler on the swings while older children compete on the baseball diamond.

The masterminds behind the park planned for the park’s athletic facilities to be state-of-the art in order to welcome teams and tournaments to Lake Wylie. But that was not their only intent. They created green space for residents to enjoy as part of life in a small-town community.

And in the process, they’ve created Lake Wylie’s newest backyard.

A Park 15 Years in the Making Rather than operating its own formal recreation program, York County distributes operating funds to its existing parks.

The effort to expand those green spaces is evidenced in the county’s 2003-2004 land use plan, which included a new park in its northern end. Since then, local council members have stepped in to press for the park to be located in Lake Wylie.

During those early days of park planning, councilmen Perry Johnston and Tom

Smith both had children who played sports. Yet few fields were local and Lake Wylie lacked open green space for the community to simply enjoy the outdoors.

Johnston and Smith championed a future park relentlessly and ultimately, during his tenure, Tom Smith was able to help secure the current Crowders Creek frontage for the project.

Yet funding to build the park wasn’t there. Soon, Lake Wylie Athletic Association joined in a grassroots campaign for the cause. The goal was secure a special tax district that would allow Lake Wylie to qualify for county hospitality revenue, collected from levies on prepared food and beverages in our unincorporated area. And while tax revenues have paid for the bulk of the building expenses, Field Day Park continues to recruit corporate sponsors, including Duke Energy and Lee’s Hoagie House, to help provide a maintenance funding stream.

plan was to build a sports park in Lake Wylie where local teams can play and visiting teams could come in for tournaments, bringing money to spend at local restaurants and businesses. In 2016, Lake Wylie voters approved the referendum and an additional tax to pay for the park.

“What’s been so remarkable about this park is the community’s support,” says Jason Ratterree, Field Day Park Superintendent.

“Lake Wylie residents saw the need for this park and took matters into their own hands by taxing themselves in order to invest in future generations.” Ratterree, a native of Rock Hill, served the Town of Fort Mill as athletic director before taking on his new role at Field Day Park.

A Park for All Residents

Park Construction With a Groundbreaking Approach A groundbreaking ceremony marked the beginning of construction in October 2018, two years after the funding was approved.

Since then, the county has partnered with general contractor J.D. Goodrum and Woolpert Engineering in a unique design-build process that has streamlined the park’s construction.

The contractor has managed other area park projects including Veteran’s Park in Fort Mill and Rankin Lake Park in Gastonia, project manager Joey Ham explains. But Field Day Park is one of the first he has worked on using the design-build framework. The arrangement, once considered innovative, is becoming more widespread. The design-build process eliminates red tape and simplifies a project by using a single contract between the owner and the design-build team.

“In the past, an architect design firm created the plans and the project was bid out to contractors, with the best price winning the contract,” said Joey Ham. “In the case of a design-build project like Field Day Park, the owner and the builder design together as a team.” That has meant county leaders have been able to give input on the project during its construction, from choosing a grading company to adding shaded areas around the playground so parents have a place to sit out of the direct sun. For Joey and his team, the design-build arrangement has meant eliminating paperwork associated with extra contracts – and a smoother project.

A Park To See From Above The county planned the park with flexibility so that as many residents as possible can use it. That’s one reason the three baseball/ softball fields and three multipurpose fields are made with state-of-the-art synthetic turf.

“The baseball fields are the only place in York County that have artificial infields,” says Jason Ratterree. “It’s a useful concept because if there’s rain, teams can return to the field as soon as the downpour is over.” Meanwhile, the three multipurpose fields are suitable for soccer, flag football and lacrosse. And all six fields are designated as a destination for tournaments to attract athletes from outside of the county. There are even 453 parking spaces to accommodate traffic.

Spectators can view all the games from the park’s central Score Tower, the park’s storied octagon-shaped centerpiece with a 360-degree view, air conditioning, rest rooms and a concession stand.

In keeping with the park’s purpose as a community gathering space, several local recreational leagues and local clubs will call Field Day Park home, including teams from the Lake Wylie Athletic Association, Lake Pointe Academy, and the Lake Wylie branch of Char-

Beyond its appeal as a cutting-edge athletic venue, the park was conceived as a gathering place for local residents. That explains the Community Center, just adjacent to Scorer’s Tower, which can accommodate gatherings of up to 70 guests indoors and more with outflow onto an expansive shaded plaza.

“We will have open air concerts, movies in the park, Food Truck Friday, even craft fairs on the plaza,” says Lake Wylie Tax District Representative Ron Domurat. Like the Scorer’s Tower, the Community Center is outfitted with a kitchen and concession area as well as movable picnic tables and benches for different kinds of activities.

Meanwhile, families can bring their children to the one-of-a-kind playground specially designed with a woodsy, lake theme to match the waterfront community. Carolina Recreation & Design of Mooresville, N.C., included climbable logs and acorn-shaped seats in the playground design, assembling the elements and pouring the surface on site to make it long-lasting. And in tandem with pioneering trends, Field Day Park is home to six pickleball courts. Pickleball, America’s newest racquet sport, is growing faster in popularity nationwide than courts can be constructed.

But beyond all the activity, you may want to simply follow the walking trail that surrounds the circumference of the park, picnic under one of the covered shelters scattered across the park’s open space, or just toss a Frisbee in your new community backyard.

“On any given Sunday afternoon, there will be a place for you to bring your child or your grandchild to play,” says Jason Ratterree.

After all, there’s plenty of open space at Field Day Park. And that’s one of the reasons the community constructed it in the first place. LW

urb appeal is important, but so is the environment. The good news is that it is much easier today to have a beautiful and environmentally friendly home and landscape because of the wide variety of ecological solutions and offerings. Landscaping practices such as frequent watering, pesticide and other harmful chemical use, and planting without regard to fit and functionality are becoming practices of the past. The following tips and trends will help to make sure your home and yard are enriched and prepared for the upcoming change of seasons while keeping the environment in mind.

Before we focus on enhancing your curb appeal, however, we need to consider the cleanliness of the exterior of your home. Power washing the siding of your house and deck will not take long but will have a big impact.

Clean your gutters and downspouts to ensure water is draining properly. Check outdoor equipment for safety and functionality.

Check the condition of the landscaping near the front of the property first then in the area nearest to the house and front entrance. Dirt patches in the lawn can usually be easily fixed with grass seed and watering. Overgrown bushes and trees should be neatly trimmed and shaped, and tired looking summer annuals need to be removed. Now, you are ready for some environmentally friendly improvements to give your home’s exterior significantly greater curb appeal.

Landscaping Eco-friendly gardens can be easily created by choosing plants and trees that are good for the environment. Native plants (plants that grow in the area naturally) are the best choice when planning your fall garden, because native plants use less water and are more likely to thrive with minimal irrigation. They are acclimated to the environment and have a natural resistance to local pests and diseases. Also, choose untreated non-GMO plants and seeds. Then, add a nice layer of organic mulch to help lock in moisture.

Certain birds and bugs are good for the environment, because they contribute to a healthy ecosystem and keep the pest population down. Strive to attract bug-eaters and pollinators with a variety of native plants that bloom at different times of the year, for year-round color. Bug-eating birds like bluebirds and chickadees that are attracted to your garden early in the season will continue to come back throughout the year and reward you by eating slugs, grubs, snails, and mosquitos. Pollinators birds, including hummingbirds, sunbirds, and orioles, are essential to our environment. They are delightful to watch. There are dozens of types of eco-friendly bugs, too. Did you know that some crops, including blueberries and cherries, are 90 percent dependent on the honeybee (pollinator) population? Ladybugs are a wonderful addition to any garden because they eat aphids and mites. And, finally,

Painting A fresh coat of paint is one of the easiest and quickest ways to refresh and update the exterior of your home. But, remember that not all paints and finishes are created equal.

Father and son beautify Lake Wylie J

ust the other day I was on my typical drive south on Hwy 274 and something beautiful and amazing caught my attention. Hwy 274 is like any typical South Carolina country road, complete with family farms, churches, scattered local businesses, and the occasional gas and convenience store. On this day, my eyes locked on something so different and so interesting that I had to pull over to get a closer look. Along the northbound side of Hwy 274 stands Archer Automotive. The repair shop is a local legend of sorts that can do everything from a general tune up, all the way to customizing a 70’s muscle car ready for the track or the show. On what used to be a typical, boring cinderblock exterior wall of the garage, is now totally covered in an amazing colorful mural of our great community, complete with images of Buster Boyd Bridge, Sweetwater Bar & Grill, Walmart, Lowes and our beloved Crowders Creek Elementary School, among other important landmarks.

Obviously, I was taken back by the brilliance and artistry that somehow appeared from nowhere overnight. Who would have this much talent and what the heck are they doing in Lake Wylie? It must be one of those eccentric and mysterious creative types from the other side of the world. You know, the ones who dress up boring parts of a city with

amazing, meaningful images and never sign their work. How could someone like this hit all our local landmarks? Why would they care?

I had to know. After some digging and a bit of luck, I found out who was responsible for this masterpiece.

As it turns out, being from a far-off land was an understatement. A few weeks ago, I was talking with another customer at a local convenience store about the mural. It just so happened that the mystery artist was standing right there in line. He overheard and kindly spoke up. The responsible person’s name is Imre Nagy. Imre is a Hungarian transplant and lives right here in Lake Wylie. He was nice enough to share some time and his story.

Imre has been painting his entire life on multiple mediums and says oil painting and flowing drop shadows are his preference. As a professional artist, he spends most of his days building the confidence of special needs citizens. Imre is extremely proud of his full-time work and loves what he does every day. His favorite hours of the day are spent at the Adult Enrichment Centers of York County, Max Abilities Centers, and the Flint Hill Adult Day Care. This is where he interacts with students, sharing his many talents and creating individual works of art, all the while creating lasting memories.

One of his most amazing creations is currently on display at Lake Wylie Liquors. The piece features a multi-dimensional depiction of the American flag as it flows in the wind.

The shadowing and the unique colors lead you to see the flag waving in the early morning sun representing a new day and opportunity. Imre commented that his love for America is so strong that it pours out in his work.

The meaning of America motivates him every day to be the best person and father a man can be. He is inspired and so grateful everyday living in America and genuinely believes that the USA is the greatest place on earth.

Standing in front of the Hwy 274 Mural, you will start to wonder how in the world did he get all these community landmarks placed “just right?” During the interview, I did ask the artist this exact thing as I pushed for his secrets. Imre was kind enough to share. Simply put, “my ten-year-old son did the work.”

What?

This is correct. Imre’s 10-year-old son was the key behind this project. The boy genius, named Attila, was sweet enough to meet with his father and me to answer a few of my inquiries. As it turns out, kid is an established artist in his own right. He has been painting and working in different forms of artistic expression for as long as he can remember. In just a few short years, he has dabbled in oils,

watercolor and, of course, technology arts.

Atilla explained “it’s pretty easy. You simply draw the lines on a tablet and then download it to a micro (tech blah, blah) and then transfer it to an external projector (tech blah, blah) and put it to the wall.” What? I asked dad to explain. He will use the tablet gizmo to create the outline and then I get to paint it.

In layman’s terms, it is like using one of those overhead projectors and tracing it to the wall.

But it is way more artistic and complicated you need to see it to believe it.

The father and son spent a few days driving around the area taking pictures of the various landmarks that make up the community.

They ended up picking most of the places we all visit or at the least are aware of. The colors represent bright, friendly, and approachable tones – just like Lake Wylie residents, according to the artist. When I asked if the piece had any hidden message or any other interesting depictions, they both responded and laughed at the same time, “yes.” I tried to extract the secrets, to no avail.

As we sat and talked together, I learned that the youngster might be able to call himself a Professional in the field of Art. Just before all this pandemic stuff broke out, Atilla entered an art contest that was held by our local Walmart. The contest required individuals to create a mural that depicted what Walmart meant to the community and how the store fits in.

Well, a few hundred entries and a bit of judging later, Atilla’s work was voted the winner. I’m telling you; this kid is really good. LW

Scratch New Executive Chef Shares His Recipe for Building Families and Friendships

iver Hills Country Club’s new executive chef, Rob Hagan IV, wields a mean whisk. But he has arrived at his prestigious position by taking a very different route than most other high-end cooks.

“I’m a rare breed in the culinary world,” Rob grins.

These days, most wannabe chefs pursue formal training at a respected institution

like Johnson and Wales University or the Culinary Institute of America. Beyond that, a typical executive chef invests twenty years in order to reach the pinnacle in the culinary profession and run a kitchen from top to bottom.

Chef Rob has put in plenty of time in the kitchens of a dozen celebrated restaurants, both working on the line and in kitchen management. But unlike his counterparts who take on their first executive chef role in middle age – with a diploma on the wall – Rob is just in his twenties. And he is self-taught.

Grandma’s Home Cooking Transforms Into a Passion

ing him the way around the kitchen, but more importantly, how sitting down to eat a good meal together brings a family together.

Rob credits his grandmother with instilling in him a passion for food. As a toddler, he sat on the counter while she prepared meals, serving as her taste tester. By the time Rob was seven or eight, he was working with this grandmother side-by-side.

“She was a phenomenal cook,” says Rob. “And she was able to manage old school ovens and plan a meal so that each element was ready just at the right time.”

When his passion for cooking grew, 12-year-old Rob asked permission from his parents to prepare dinner any evening he had the chance. Both worked long hours in the banking industry and eagerly agreed. His mother – and later older sister Kristen, once she obtained her driver’s license – took him grocery shopping. Rob cooked alongside his mom, making the experience into a game of catch as they tossed ingredients back and forth across the counter. When his mom traveled for work, Rob’s dad stepped in to teach him to make stir fry or grilled bone-in chicken. “As a child, I believed that chicken was supposed to be charred on the outside,” Rob laughs, “Because that’s the way my dad always prepared it.” He credits his parents for teach-

Home Cooking Morphs to High-End Cuisine His father, a member of Carmel Country Club, saw Rob’s interest in cuisine and introduced him to family friend and club executive chef, Mike Vergili. The chef put Rob to work peeling potatoes and picking parsley at a wine dinner. Rob was ecstatic. “Chef Mike is my idol,” says Rob. “He was then, and he is now.”

When he turned fifteen, Rob obtained his first line cook job at Charlotte Country Club where he learned the basics of dicing, creaming, mixing, grilling, and whipping. By law, he wasn’t old enough to operate the kitchen’s electric machinery, so Rob frequently stopped mid-recipe to call over thensous chef Lewis Donald (the brainchild of Sweet Lew’s BBQ in uptown and Belmont) to turn on a blender or run tenderloin through a slicer.

“I owe a lot to Chef Mike and Chef Lew,” says Rob. “I walked into their kitchens knowing only home cooking. They turned my passion into culinary skills.”

At age of 21 – radically young in cooking circles – Rob was named sous chef at Pine Lake Country Club in Fort Mill. “That’s where I learned the paperwork side of the culinary arts,” he says. A sous chef manages both supplies and staff in the kitchen. Other stints followed – in all, Rob has worked at six country clubs plus at least half dozen other restaurants, often clocking in 110 hours a week by working a morning shift at one restaurant and at another in the evening.

He was serving as banquet chef at Forsyth Country Club in Winston-Salem when River Hills Country Club general manager Rolf Eckert saw Rob’s resume and invited him to demonstrate his cooking skills for several board members.

The 12-Hour Stage A chef ’s job interview, called a stage (stahzh), is a bit like an audition. The cook works a shift in the restaurant’s kitchen along with the rest of the staff so the employer can assess the candidate’s culinary skills.

Rob’s stage, however, was conducted at Rolf Eckert’s private home, completely solo.

“I didn’t know what kind of equipment he had, so brought everything I needed,” says Rob. “I always prepare for a ‘what if?’ scenario.” Rob stuffed his car with bowls, platters, heating lamps, slicers, gadgets, and serving dishes – even the gear he needed to build a makeshift smoker to prepare the smoked salmon – and fresh ingredients. At eleven o’clock on the morning of the stage, Rob arrived at the Eckert home and commandeered the kitchen.

From there, he prepared each dish from scratch, including three appetizers, an entrée, a dessert, and even homemade biscuits and honey butter. He also plated each course and provided wait staff skills, explaining to guests how each dish was made. As a coup de grace, Rob topped off the meal with an extra sweet: his grandmother’s famous peanut butter fudge.

Spinach and Artichoke Dip What You Need ¾ pound fresh spinach 1 can artichoke hearts, drained and chopped ½ small onion, diced 1 ½ pounds cream cheese 1 cup parmesan cheese 2 cups half and half ¼

What To Do 1. Melt butter in a large pan. Cook onions until translucent.

2. Add artichokes and garlic. Cook 1-2 minutes.

3. Fold in salt, pepper, and half and half. Let the mixture come to a simmer.

4. Stir in the cream cheese. Continuing stirring until the mixture is smooth and well-combined.

½ teaspoon cayenne pepper

5. Add parmesan cheese, cayenne pepper, and spinach.

Cook for 5 minutes. Adjust flavorings and add half and half to thin or roux to thicken.

1 tablespoon salt

6. Serve warm with crusty bread.

1 cup walnut halves 1 cup golden raisins 1 cup sour cream or plain yogurt ½ cup mayonnaise 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, finely chopped 2 teaspoons honey 1 ½ fresh lemons, juiced, with lemon zest separated from juice ¼ teaspoon fresh ground black pepper ¼ cup dried cranberries

3. Meanwhile, in a large bowl whisk together sour cream, mayonnaise, parsley, honey, and lemon zest. Season with black pepper.

4. Halve, core, and cut apples into ¾ inch pieces, leaving the skin intact.

5. In a separate bowl, combine apples, celery, and raisins.

Sprinkle with lemon juice. Toss this mixture with dressing. Refrigerate if you’re not serving immediately.

6. When you’re ready to serve, toss walnuts into the refrigerated mixture. Arrange the salad on romaine leaves. Sprinkle with dried cranberries.

High End Cuisine That Brings People Together Rob’s skills, personality, and passion led to the offer to join the RHCC team. As executive chef, he oversees all aspects of the restaurant.

That includes the country club’s main kitchen as well as menus at two pools and The Turn Shack, a snack bar at the golf course’s ninth hole where golfers can stop for a sandwich or quick bite to eat. While Chef Rob admits he’s an anomaly by being both young and selftaught, nevertheless he’s putting his personal stamp on the restaurant from top to bottom, including staff, vendors, recipes, and menus.

“I’m driven when it comes to food,” he admits. “Everything is made in-house, from scratch.” And from all fresh ingredients. Rob has tapped vendors to supply the restaurant with all locally sourced products grown or produced in North and South Carolina, like just-picked arugula, Carolina peaches, Brandywine heirloom tomatoes, and fresh flounder ferried directly to Lake Wylie from the Carolina coastline. His vision is that RHCC becomes known as the Club of the Carolinas, one that draws attention to products and produce from both states.

Meanwhile, his grandmother remains his inspiration. When she passed away four years ago, Rob inherited her handwritten family recipes – an irreplaceable treasure that he plans to copy and place in cookbooks as gifts to family members when he marries his fiancée, Kelly Grimm, in October 2021.

“Grandmother told me, ‘Love what you do,’ and I love how great food brings friends and families closer together,” says Chef Rob. “I want to give our guests that kind of exceptional experience every time they sit down to eat.”

illy Hurin was waiting to shoot baskets at the Clover YMCA when he spotted a flyer on the bulletin board that said, “Learn to Play Pickleball.” Intrigued, he called the number.

“I took to the game hook, line, and sinker,” says Billy, a Clover resident. Soon, he was trekking to Charlotte, Tega Cay, Statesville – even Raleigh – to play with new friends. And just a year later, in 2017, Billy had become a USA Pickleball Association’s Ambassador for York County.

Billy is the local face of pickleball, America’s newest racquet sport, which is exploding in popularity both across the United States and overseas. People of all ages – from children to senior citizens – are enjoying the game that’s easy to learn and easy for anyone to play no matter what their level of fitness. Pickleball’s small court and cozy atmosphere allows people to interact while enjoying the game.

Now, pickleball has come to Lake Wylie.

So if you have secretly dreamed of lobbing a tennis ball over the net, winging a badminton shuttlecock, or besting an opponent in ping pong … well, you can.

But first … what is pickleball and how did the craze take off?

Three Dads Launch a New Racquet Sport We have three West Coast dads to thank for launching the pickleball phenomenon.

One summer day in 1965, Congressman Joel Pritchard and his businessman friend Bill Bell returned to Pritchard’s vacation home on Bainbridge Island, Washington, after a round of golf. They found their families sitting around, bored, with nothing to do.

To entertain their kids, the dads improvised a game on an old badminton court. On site they could find just a partial set of racquets, so the families scrounged for ping-pong paddles and found a plastic whiffle ball to volley back and forth, lowering the net to tennis level to allow bounces.

What followed was legendary backyard fun as the Pritchards and Bells, joined by neighbor Barney McCallum, inadvertently created a new game that is playable by all ages and skill levels. Within a few days, they worked out the details for pickleball that have essentially remained the same ever since.

How Do You Play Pickleball?

size as a doubles badminton court at 20×44 feet. Lines work like those on a tennis court, allowing the back areas for serving and receiving the ball at beginning of play.

Like tennis, pickleball is played either as doubles (two players per team) or singles.

Each player uses a paddle, smaller than a tennis racquet but larger than a ping-pong paddle. The ball has holes, much like a whiffle ball, but it’s about the size of a tennis ball.

And like tennis, the ball is served diagonally cross court. But unlike tennis, a pickleball serve is always underhand. Points can only be scored by the serving side.

And unique to pickleball is the Double Bounce Rule. Before the ball can be hit out of the air, it has to bounce and be returned on each side of the court one time. After that, players can volley (hit the ball before it bounces), but only when they are behind the

non-volley zone - the first seven feet on either side of the net - also called the “kitchen.”

The Double Bounce Rule evens the playing field for less athletic pickleballers. That, plus the fact that games move quickly – played to just 11 points, and the winner must win by two – mean that the fun is in the exchanges, rather than power strokes. More advanced players can focus on strategy.

And everyone can enjoy the social banter.

From Backyard Game to Mainstream Sport The three founding families played the game with friends and two years later, in 1967, local Washington State resident Bob O’Brian built the first pickleball court in his backyard.

From there, pickleball grew in popularity in the Pacific Northwest and soon the three dads saw a business opportunity. They each ponied up $500 to launch Pickleball, Inc. in 1972. After that, articles in The National Observer (1975) and Tennis magazine (1976) drew even more national attention to the sport.

McCallum, who had already launched two companies of his own, was the business mind behind the sport’s growth. “People called my dad the father of pickleball,” says Frank Pritchard, Joel’s son. “But Barney was the parent who nurtured it and worked it and put his money where his mouth was.” Today, Pickleball, Inc. oversees design, manufacturing, and distribution of paddles, balls, nets, and equipment.

name. Joel Pritchard’s wife, Joan, compared the game to a “pickle boat,” the last boat in a rowing race, manned by a hodgepodge of oarsmen from other teams. Likewise, pickleball is an unlikely mishmash of other racquet sports. Meanwhile, Barney McCallum claimed that the game was named after the Pritchard’s dog Pickles, who got in the habit of chasing game balls.

Either way, the sport’s name was home grown – and it stuck.

Pickleball’s Local Growth In early 2019, Billy Hurin saw the plans for Field Day Park on Facebook. He contacted York county councilwoman Allison Love and asked that the planned tennis courts include lines for pickleball. Allison invited Billy to share his request at one of the county council’s public meetings about the park.

Billy obliged and even brought along twenty of his fellow pickleballers, who dressed in their playing gear and toted along paddles and balls to the meeting.

“We explained the game to everyone,” said

Billy. “During the break, we showed people how to play. There were paddles and balls flying everywhere.” In an informal vote taken soon afterwards on social media, Lake Wylie residents voted three to one for the park to include pickleball courts.

“I love introducing pickleball to new people and teaching them to play,” says Billy. He’s so passionate about the sport that even as an amateur, he’s got a USA Pickleball Association (USAPA) Tournament Player Rating and has been signed by corporate sponsor Onix.

Pickleball’s Skyrocketing Popularity Easy play, simple rules, and adaptability mean the sport has taken off, with an estimated three million players today and counting. Retirement locations have adopted pickleball as an integrated sports activity for residents. Schools offer pickleball in physical education classes. Billy himself will introduce pickleball to Junior ROTC students at Clover High School during the upcoming academic year. Numbers of courts have doubled worldwide since 2010 with new facilities

Feature in community centers, retirement communities, schools, local gyms, and local parks, including six pickleball courts at the new Field Day Park at Lake Wylie (see sidebar) and six in the River Hills community, which are being converted from two former tennis courts.

Meanwhile, in 2005, USAPA incorporated as a nonprofit organization. The first order of business was to adopt an official rulebook for the sport, which led to sanctioned local and state pickleball tournaments. The first National Open Pickleball Competition was conducted in Surprise, Arizona in 2009.

Then in 2015, the International Federation of Pickleball (IFP) was chartered with the goal of introducing pickleball to nations around the world and ultimately establishing it as an Olympic sport.

Yet at its roots is a backyard sport that’s fun for everyone to play. “I’ve met so many people through pickleball,” says Billy, citing tournaments he has attended up and down the east coast and even his 2018 all-inclusive pickleball vacation in the Dominican Republic.

But now, like other local Lake Wylie residents, he can play just down the street. LW

hat a long, strange year it has been! As summer draws to a close and we enter the fall season on Lake Wylie, many things in our lives are different than usual. Many of us are still working from home, and schools, sports and other activities are operating in different modes than we’re used to. Yet, the loons are returning to their winter homes on the lake, the leaves on the trees will soon be transforming to beautiful autumn colors, and the heat of the summer will be behind us once more.

This home in Summerhouse at Paddler’s Cove in Lake Wylie went under contract in less than two weeks on the market, selling for $455,000. Three years ago, the home sold new for $410,000.

The pandemic slowed many activities down, but real estate has surprisingly continued its strong performance, both on the lake and in our greater Lake Wylie community.

Year-to-date home sales through the end of July were up about 3% overall in our area, and waterfront home sales were at record levels — up 28% over last year.

During April and May, we did see a downturn during the period the Carolinas were under “stay-at-home” orders, with fewer out-ofstate buyers in town shopping for homes and others waiting to see what might happen with the economy. However, June and July sales picked up substantially.

Our biggest challenge in real estate, both on and off the lake, is the shortage in the number of listings available to sell. Typically, the late spring brings an influx of “For Sale” signs to the yards. This year has been an exception. As of the end of July, total listings in our area are down about 25% in comparison to last year. Waterfront home listings are down by 33%.

This means that new listings receive quick attention from eager buyers, and properly

Development Update priced properties in desirable locations are selling within days — many with multiple offers.

On the lake, homes have been selling in all price categories. The listing inventory is most strained in the lower price ranges, under $700,000, however.

Luxury waterfront homes priced over $1 million are on track to sell at record levels in 2020. These homes — which are located all around the lake — tend to be newer than the average home selling on Lake Wylie, with an average age of about 10 years. The average age of homes sold on Lake Wylie to date is 26 years. The $1 million+ priced homes average about 5,500 square feet (compared to the average on the lake of about 3,200 square feet), and often have extra features such as outdoor living areas, pools, gourmet kitchens and big lake views.

Lake cabin sales have also been very strong this year, either providing the buyers a prime building spot for a new home once the cabin is removed, or the use of a second home for a weekend getaway. Even small properties, if renovated with modern kitchens and updated baths and flooring, are fetching prices of $400,000 to the high $500,000s.

Land sales are also strong in our area.

As people have been spending more time at home during the pandemic, local resources — such as the lake and recreational areas — have become more important to many. Buyers are looking for a little more space and privacy, and neighborhoods with higher acreage tracts have performed well in this market.

New developments off the lake continue to open up, and properties neighborhoods such as Cypress Point in Tega Cay, Paddlers Cove in Lake Wylie, Regency at Palisades, and McLean in Belmont are selling very well.

Will the boom continue? We anticipate buyer demand to remain high, however our current sales levels — particularly on the lake — are not sustainable unless the listing inventory challenge is resolved. Professional marketing is particularly important for sellers at this time, with potential buyers increasingly using online tools to preview properties, ready to make quick purchase decisions.

Buyers should be prepared to move quickly when ready to purchase. Prequalification for a mortgage, and clear understanding of “must-haves” in terms of location, home features and amenities are important in the current marketplace. LW

020 came in with a roar, with plans, activities, goals, and a calendar laced with opportunities to gather, network and support one another. None of us could have dreamed that by mid-March, we would see a pandemic cause such all-encompassing mayhem. But after the initial shock, it was time to adapt and support our businesses as they struggled to adapt and meet needs. We immediately utilized social media to promote our businesses and restaurants as they adjusted to an unfolding, confusing, frightening situation.

Without a local newspaper, no personal contact, no gatherings, people had to rely on the internet and technology to stay in contact. We needed to utilize and optimize social media and technology to communicate news about Covid-19 and safety, provide information about the PPP and EILD government loan programs, SBA programs and links to those websites where our businesses could apply and get information. We shared important information from the health professionals and the governor’s office. In cooperation with York County Economic Development Board, SC Dept. of Commerce and FEMA we made infrared thermometers available and delivered them to many local non-medical businesses.

As it became clear the pandemic and its impact were not going to end anytime soon, we developed a plan to check in with our members to see how we could help and support them. We posted specials, deals, changes in business hours of operation, new opportunities, and took a few photos along the way.

The chamber also began to work on “internet presence optimization” and partnered with Local Chamber Boost (LCB) to develop 54

a plan to increase its presence on the internet, which also helps customers find our businesses. Realizing it is more important than ever for our businesses to have great reviews online to help attract new customers, the chamber is leading by example and is proud to announce it is only one in a handful of chambers in the U.S. to have 100 reviews — and all are 5-star reviews. Reviews and internet activity give “Google Juice,” which means when people do a search, whether for the chamber or a business, you rise to the top of the search. That equals opportunity to attract more customers.

In addition, the chamber has also created and launched a member VIP text program to communicate member news, specials, updates and timely, pertinent information.

Members can join the program by texting VIP to 803-560-4969 and following the prompts.

The goal to optimize our internet presence is for the chamber and its members to

position themselves for future opportunity, growth and prosperity.

Lake Wylie Today gives our members and businesses the opportunity to advertise in an award-winning local, promotional magazine that reaches people and customers with distribution of 10,000 quarterly. In addition, the Lake Wylie Living Newcomers Guide, published annually, markets the area to visitors, newcomers and relocation prospects and is used by all who market Lake Wylie.

Another partnership the chamber has is with Blue Cross/ Blue Shield of South Carolina. Chamber members can sign up for the BC/BS Chamber Advantage Plan, designed for businesses with two to 50 employees. Fall is the time for individuals and businesses to plan for this important coverage in 2021.

To help with community needs, the chamber collaborated with other community groups. The chamber helped coordinate and promote food drives for Clover Area Assistance Center. It promoted or coordinated Back to School Supply drives to help Clover School District, CAAC and a new program YMCA Camp Thunderbird is offering to help with daycare, homework and virtual learning for essential workers and working parents.

Our pets also needed help. During the pandemic, the animal shelter has needed even more supplies to meet the needs of abandoned or surrendered pets. The chamber helped promote the pet supply drive organized by Rotary of Lake Wylie to add to the School Supply Drive held at Camp Thunderbird.

The chamber publicized Red Cross Blood Drives hosted by Glaza Chiropractic and Fast Frog Bakery.

Lake Wylie is a caring community and the season of giving lasts all year. The chamber has always embraced the role of community support. Our businesses are also generous community supporters.

This chamber is known for our big heart.

For example, we learned long-time member Millie Decker, who lives at Lake Wylie Assisted Living, has been quarantined since February, and recently spent time in the hospital, celebrated her 95th birthday while quarantined. So, we decided, with chamber member Carolina Storks and More, to put a sign on the lawn at LWAL so Millie could see out her window and feel the love of her chamber friends and community. Such gestures make a big difference.

Another important role of the chamber is that of legislative liaison. During the pandemic, our legislators have stayed in contact with us, worked to provide free Covid-19 testing locally, held Zoom meetings and Facebook Live sessions, and are always a phone call away.

These relationships are vital.

Looking ahead, we are planning the annual chamber golf event — with social distancing and lots of entertainment, hospitality, fun and prizes spread out throughout the golf course — so everyone should be able to have a good time and promote their businesses. River Hills Country Club is the perfect venue to safely gather and social distance to have a good time and see friends and business associates.
