Let’s give generously and count our blessings

T

his year of the pandemic has touched so many lives in our area. Some have lost jobs, schools have adapted for virtual learning and safe social distancing in order to conduct classes, and events and festivities have been canceled. Our prayers are with those who have experienced illness and loss.

The holidays are a time to count our blessings and give generously – during this holiday season and throughout the year if we are able.

Thanksgiving marks the beginning of the season of giving, but at Lake Wylie, the season of giving is every day of the year. It seems that each week there are various charity projects, fundraisers, volunteering projects and efforts to help others. For newcomers, there are endless opportunities to volunteer, give and participate.

The Clover Area Assistance Center needs canned goods, toiletries and household staples like dish soap, bath and laundry soap, toilet paper, paper towels, diapers, and shampoo.

To that end, the Lake Wyle Chamber of Commerce, Anchor Self Storage and Lake Wylie Pharmacy are sponsoring the “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” charity drive, held each year. Our community members, church congregations and businesses can drop off canned goods, unwrapped toys, new hats, gloves, coats and scarves at Lake Wylie Pharmacy, 221 Latitude Lane # 109, Shoppes at the Landing,

Lake Wylie, or at Anchor Self Storage (next to Bojangles) at Lake Wylie. The collected items will be delivered to CAAC. Checks are welcome, too. Make checks to Clover Area Assistance Center and mail to PO Box 521, Clover, SC 29710.

During the year, there are so many examples of generous support for our many community charitable efforts. The Sweet Repeat Foundation operates one of the most successful “recycling” charity projects in the area, with its Sweet Repeat resale store located in Lake Wylie Plaza. The volunteers work all year long to operate this store for charity. Items are contributed to Sweet Repeat and sold, and the money raised is contributed to charity. Usually, Sweet Repeat raises more than $100,000 a year to contribute to area charities. Tender Hearts, located in Clover, is also a terrific place to both donate items and to buy used items.

The River Hills–Lake Wylie Lions Club raises money for charity through several events throughout the year, including their annual golf tournament, Charity Christmas Tree sale, producing the River Hills Telephone Directory and the annual fall raffle. This year, due to the pandemic, the golf event was canceled. The Lions Club Christmas Tree Lot has been relocated to an area adjacent to the River Hills Community Association office near the back gate of River Hills. The lot opens the

week of Thanksgiving.

The May Day Golf event and foundation raises money to help homeless and disadvantaged students in the area. Due to the pandemic, this year’s golf event was canceled; however, contributions are accepted all year long, so please consider sending a check to Lake Wylie/ Clover May Day Projects, 4100 Charlotte Highway, Lake Wylie, SC 29710.

The Lake Wylie Children’s Charity raises funds throughout the year to help families who have a seriously ill child and need financial and community support.

Thanksgiving and the holidays are a time to count our blessings, safely spend time with family and friends, and enjoy days of feasting, football, and good times together. There is much to be thankful for when you live at Lake Wylie. Each day comes with enjoyment of beauty, recreational opportunities, caring neighbors, and friends. It is also a time to give to charity projects that benefit so many all year long. Angel Trees, Toys for Tots, Clover Jaycees Santa’s Toy drive and CAAC Adopt a Family are but a few of the many opportunities to give. And don’t forget; giving time by volunteering is a priceless gift.

The holidays are a time to celebrate the season, give, and care for those around us.

his year it is more important than ever to support our local businesses. Christmastime may be different this year with staying closer to home and less socializing and less travel. As the holiday rapidly approaches, avoid the traffic, save time, stay safe, shop locally and support our community and local businesses. Here are just a few ideas to consider as you prepare for the holidays: Lowes of Lake Wylie and WalMart will have everything for home improvements, holiday décor and gifts for the whole family with their many departments. You can shop online and then pick up your selected items at the local stores.

Market on Wylie located by Lake Wylie Plaza has selections of wine, imported cheeses, meats and gourmet foods. Great for gifts or for making a festive meal at home.

eptember and October were busy months for the Lake Wylie Rotary. Eddie Lukowski and Ed Lindsey built another library and installed it in Autumn Cove subdivision in September. The residents were delighted! The Lake Wylie Rotarians were also gathering books to stock the Little Free Libraries.

Unwrapped toys, canned goods, diapers, and warm clothing can be dropped off at Lake Wylie Pharmacy, located at 221 Latitude Lane #109 at Shoppes at The Landing at Lake Wylie, between 9 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. until noon on Saturday, or at Anchor Self Storage, 4937 Charlotte Hwy (located next to Bojangles on Highway 49) from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. oh. Ah. Each year, your family and friends gawk at homes draped with thousands of twinkling lights and ogle the oversized, inflated Santas, toy soldiers, and reindeers on display in neighbors’ yards.

This year give them another way to be wowed by holiday decorations: invite them

to Lake Wylie’s Lights on the Lake Holiday Boat Parade on December 12.

Lake Wylie’s own holiday light show on the water was the first event of its kind in the Charlotte region when it was launched in 1989. Now, more than three decades later, the Holiday Boat Parade continues to bring out boaters and spectators for its annual Lights on the Lake Festival right in your backyard.

There’s never been a better time to light up the shore. Many other community events have been cancelled during 2020. Yet boating, by its very nature, allows for social distancing.

Shoreline More Than a Century of Outdoor Lights

Light-festooned homes, businesses, and boats are not a new phenomenon.

Thomas Edison introduced the first outdoor electric Christmas light display in 1880 when he draped lights outside of his lab near a railway station. By 1890, strings of electric lights were mass produced and displays became popular at retail stores and government buildings.

Yet it was in the aftermath of World War II’s blackouts – and as electricity became more affordable – that homeowners began decorating their houses with lights. General Electric Corporation was among the first to sponsor holiday light display competitions. Soon, local cities and chambers of commerce organized the events as a way to build a sense of community in the increasingly populated suburbs.

The Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce launched its own local tradition 31 years ago and continues to coordinate the event each year with support from the Coast Guard Auxiliary, law enforcement, and a host of community volunteers. Papa Doc’s Shore Club, Comporium Communications, and Cabela’s are this year’s major corporate sponsors.

Lights on the Lake Includes Boats, Docks, Homes Along with offering a spectacular view of holiday cheer on the lake, the parade operates as a competition. Each year, the Chamber of Commerce gathers a panel of three judges to evaluate decorated boats and award prizes.

One judge is selected from each of three sectors of the local community: local businesses, elected officials, and community members.

Boat owners can register to participate in the parade up to the day of the event. Prior to the start of the parade, entrants congregate in their boats near the Papa Doc’s pier so that judges can see each competing boat close up.

During the parade itself, judges get a long-distance view of competitors and observe how their lights reflect on the water.

The parade typically launches from Papa Doc’s, circles around in front of RiverPointe on the lake’s Charlotte shoreline, and travels under the Buster Boyd Bridge before returning to the starting line. Afterwards, boats remain close to shore so spectators can view their decorations in detail. The panel awards first, second, and third place plaques and a Most Creative prize.

“Participants can decorate their boats any way they like,” says Susan Bromfield, president of the Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce. “They can be Christmas-themed, cartoon-themed, movie-themed, or whatever the owner prefers. The parade celebrates all holidays. It’s a festive time for everyone.”

Homeowners along the shoreline are encouraged to join in the festivities by decorating their docks and homes on the lakeside.

“Plenty of spectators along the lake parade route have parties and entertain on the night of the parade,” says Bromfield. “They stand along the shore to watch the boats.” Lake Wylie restaurants, particularly those within walking distance of the boat landing, run a

brisk trade on parade night.

Tips for Decorating Your Boat or Dock You can enter any size boat into the parade.

And any homeowner who lives on or near the lake is encouraged to light up the shoreline.

Today’s energy-efficient LED lights require less electricity than Christmas lights from the past, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association. Even so, you’ll need to fuel your lights with an onboard power source or a portable generator on your boat or at the pier.

Veteran boat parade skippers recommend using giant foam cut outs or oversized inflatable displays to make an impression from a distance. Outline the cut-out shapes and the

boat’s masts and sails with waterproof rope lights, using spotlights to highlight inflatables or your theme’s centerpiece. Secure the lights with ties or bungee cords so the decorations do not loosen or become a hazard in the breeze.

For safety, never mount lights in the boat or on the dock close to the water where they will become submerged. Instead, allow for wakes and waves. Keep holiday lights at least a foot above the water.

Papa Doc’s Shore Club hosts the annual boat parade where the docks are full of decorated boats. a well-lit Christmas tree and provides music along the shoreline. Restaurant staff members are on hand to collect unwrapped toys, canned food items, and financial gifts that are distributed to needy families through the Clover Area Assistance Center and Santa’s Closet in Clover. In past years, the Bethel Fire Department has mounted its extension ladder and an American flag on the lake’s edge at the parade’s starting point. Santa Claus has been known to make a surprise appearance at the parade by arriving at the Papa Doc pier on a local firetruck.

“The Boat Parade is a great community event,” says resident Val Darlin. “Thanks to all the boat owners who outdo themselves for our enjoyment.”

The chamber keeps a close eye on the weather report beginning at Thanksgiving.

While a mild forecast gets participants excited, even in chilly temperatures spectators and participants alike bundle up, participate, and make merry. “One year, snowflakes began to fall towards the end of the evening,” says Susan. “It’s was stunning.” The only conditions for cancellation? Pouring rain.

Yet even after the parade is over and the prizes are awarded, Lights on the Lake is not a one-and-done deal. The light show lasts beyond just one evening as boat owners and shoreline residents keep their decorations up and lit throughout the holiday season.

“We started this event over thirty years ago, back when the restaurant that is now Papa Doc’s was called The Hungry Fisherman,” said Bromfield. “Our purpose over the years has remained the same: to attract people to the lake in order to celebrate the season. There’s no more important time or reason to do that than now, during this pandemic, when we all are craving good cheer.”

And while all of us are ready to admire the view and add to the chorus with our own oohs and ahs, too. LW

Local bakeries keep your sweet tooth happy during the holiday season

bout 20 years ago, Kristine Rines and her mom hosted their first Christmas cookie exchange party.

It became her favorite holiday tradition. Every year, Kristine experimented with different ingredients to create a new cookie recipe for the annual exchange. Friends and family took notice and started ordering cookies and other confections from Kristine’s kitchen, which she turned into “Little Cakes At The Lake” bakery service.

Kristine is just one of the local bakers that helps to satisfy sweet tooths in and around Lake Wylie. If sugar plums are dancing in your head but you don’t have time to get them into the oven, help is just around the corner.

Joy Sanderson decorated cakes in Harris Teeter’s bakery for fourteen years. When she decided to leave the corporate life, she purchased property at Route 55 and Five Points and used her cake decorating experience to open Fast Frog Bakery in January 2019.

It didn’t take long for Fast Frog to build a loyal clientele. The closest bakeries, at the time, were in Gastonia and Belmont. Customers drive from Rock Hill, Fort Mill, and The Palisades for Fast Frog’s specialty Strawberry OMG Cake, which calls for fresh strawberries in the cake, filling, and icing. “ We use as many local strawberries as possible,” says Joy. “We can get them in fall and winter from the Bush-N-Vine.”

Another customer favorite: Blueberry White Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies. “We bake those two or three times a week,” says Joy. Customers’ enthusiasm was evident when Fast Frog Bakery was named the Sweetest Bakery in South Carolina in 2019, awarded by Dawn Foods based on numbers of votes statewide. Joy, her assistant Melissa McCaughan, and their additional four staff members saw

that support multiply even more during the pandemic. “When the bakery re-opened after a two-week shutdown, our dining room was full of pre-orders for drive-through pick up,” says Joy. “We had even more orders than during our grand opening.”

Fast Frog bakes nearly anything that patrons request, from cake pops to specialty cakes to brownies to truffles. Christmas means plenty of orders for cookie trays and Yule Logs, a chocolate cake which is rolled with filling and frosted white.

Is there anything Joy’s team doesn’t bake?

“We don’t do pies,” she says. “We order those from Lauren McGill to sell to customers who request them.”

Pies, Oh My Lauren McGill’s family has been baking and cooking for Clover area residents for five generations — since 1888, in fact, when James Leslie McGill opened his general store at the intersection of Highway 161 and Highway 55 in Clover.

The general store closed in early 2020 and quietly reopened in May as Lauren’s Café and Events. But even before patrons began raving

Food for Thought about the café’s yummy sandwiches and family-friendly, iconic surroundings, they’ve been dishing about Lauren’s pies.

“I developed my pie recipes from my grandmother’s cook book,” says Lauren.

“Then I tweaked them to become my own.”

A few customers have specially ordered rhubarb pie, but by far Lauren’s most popular pies are pecan, pumpkin, sweet potato, and apple. She also makes gluten-free pies. Last year, during her first year in business, Lauren baked and sold 400 pies.

And she is maintaining another family tradition using secrets she learned from her great-grandmother. “Cake rolls were her specialty,” says Lauren. “I make pumpkin rolls, red velvet rolls, and yule logs.”

Cakes By The Slice – and More Lake Wylie resident Kelly Foster had longed dreamed about owning a gourmet cupcake shop. She bought Sugarlicious from its original Gastonia owner in 2017 and in September 2020 opened the bakery’s second location in Lake Wylie.

“It’s not my bakery, though,” says Kelly.

“It’s the Lord’s.” Her goal is to share a bit of

sugary sweetness with her customers along with a large dollop of God’s love. Praise music fills the shops. Each of the two locations has a prayer wall where patrons can post prayer requests.

Kelly’s ten employees specialize in cakes, cupcakes, cheese cakes, and sugar cookies.

“Our biggest daily seller is cake by the slice,” says Kelly. Flavors in the display cases rotate among the bakery’s thirty cake varieties ranging from S’mores Cake to Cinnamon Bun Cake to Cherry Lemon Sundrop Cake.

Meanwhile, many of Sugarlicious’s larger orders come from local businesses. “The community has been so supportive,” says Kelly.

“They call on us to provide desserts when they cater an event.” One of her most memorable orders? One thousand cupcakes for an open house hosted by Hanks Realty Group in Gastonia. More recently, Lake Wylie’s new Field Day Park ordered 700 sugar cookies for its opening day event.

Since then her business has grown by word of mouth and through her Facebook page, appropriately titled Cookie Land. Today, Cheree completes 12-15 custom orders a week, averaging two or three dozen cookies per order or a cake decorated with (what else?) cookies. “Most of the time, customers don’t ask for a specific cookie shape,” says Cheree. “They tell me that they’ve seen my work and that they trust me to choose and create cookies to fit the occasion.”

Baking begins each week on Monday with a sugar cookie recipe that was passed to Cheree from a friend of her mother’s – one she has tweaked over the years. “Mine is a soft sugar cookie,” says Cheree. She cuts the dough using cookie cutters from her 500-piece collection, choosing shapes to fit the customer’s party theme.

The rest of the week is dedicated to custom decorating each cookie, one by one, first with royal icing glaze and then with additional decorations. The cookies dry overnight to set.

Then each one is heat sealed in an individual packet. “They stay fresh at least two to three weeks,” says Cheree.

In addition to custom orders, Cheree occasionally bakes for what she calls her Pop Up Shop. “I’ll bake whatever cookies I want, seal them, and set them out on my porch,” she says. “Then I’ll post pictures on my Facebook page and sales are on a first-come, first-served basis.” Cookies at the Pop Up Shop always sell out in a couple of hours.

Now that Kristine Rines and Little Cakes At The Lake accumulated all of those original holiday cookie recipes for holiday cookie exchanges, how could she share them year round? Kristine saw an opening in the spe-

cialty cookie niche. This fall, she launched The Little Cakes Cookie Club.

“It’s a way to give people a little lift,” says Kristine. Members receive a box of handmade specialty cookies each month in mouthwatering varieties like Pumpkin Cheesecake, Fresh Strawberry, and Sweet and Salty (made with fresh peanut butter, white chocolate, and pretzels.) Some Cookie Club members treat themselves. Others have Kristine deliver their order to teachers or first responders as a way of saying, “Thank you.”

“It’s a great way to share unique cookies with those you love or support,” says Kristine.

The same is true for the cakes, pies, truffles, yule logs, and other sweet treats served up by bakeries across Lake Wylie. Whether you’re making a plate for Santa or entertaining colleagues from the office. And whether it’s at the holidays, for a birthday, a baby shower, a wedding, or a special occasion …

Fire in the Pit FIRE PITS GROW IN YEAR-ROUND POPULARITY

By Kathy Widenhouse Lake Wylie residents are spending more time at home. Increasingly, it’s with our toes warming around a fire pit in our own backyards. And why not? You can enjoy the outdoors, stay toasty warm, and be in the company of friends — all while still maintaining safe social distancing.

Plus, our mild climate makes a fire pit an outdoor feature that Lake Wylie residents can enjoy year-round. Local residents use fire pits for warmth during the winter but also to stave off cool evening temperatures in the spring and fall and to fend off the mosquitoes during the summer months.

Garden Party Outdoor living features are more important in the south than any other part of the country. In our area, 94% of all new homes include decks, patios, and other outdoor living features.

Among the most requested exterior add-ons?

Fire pits — right behind lighting and seating areas, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects. A well-placed fire pit provides a focal point to your yard or patio and adds atmosphere to your outdoor living space.

They are significantly less expensive than outdoor fireplaces. Fire pits are not only versatile, but they also increase your home value.

But before you start dreaming of hosting a marshmallow roast, investigate your fire pit options and make the best choice for your home and your landscape.

Permanent or Portable?

Your first decision is whether you want a permanent structure or one that you can move from place to place. If you have room on your property and no HOA restrictions, you can place your fire pit where you like, as long as it’s built safely. Consider how you’ll use it. A long, linear structure can anchor a more expansive area for entertaining. Meanwhile, a circular firepit is ideal for quiet rejuvenation at the end of the day or for small gatherings with a handful of friends.

If you’re thinking of building a permanent fire pit structure in your yard, then you need to go beyond simply digging a shallow crater and tossing in a few sticks to burn. Be safe. “Concrete blocks, pea gravel, river rocks and other materials that are often used in DIY fire pits can trap water inside, and when heated they can explode,” say the pros at Benton Outdoor Living in Lake Wylie. “But when built correctly, a fire pit is safe to use.” The safest solutions are fire bricks or a metal pit liner in the inner pit with interlocking pavers, natural stone, or concrete paver kits for the exterior part of the pit.

Rather than DIY, you can have landscape pros install a permanent fire pit on your patio or deck. Yours could be fueled by natural gas or propane gas (see below) and materials can complement or match your existing hardscape. Some designs have a wide lip which allow a place for propping up your feet or setting a cup of joe.

On the other hand, a portable fire pit offers versatility. Most are made from steel, copper, or iron — and with good reason. Heavy duty materials are durable. Your fire pit will remain outdoors in all seasons to endure blistering August heat and South Carolina’s freeze-meltfreeze winter cycles.

Lightweight folding camp chairs are an option, too, because they are easy to move. You can also place upended log chunks around your campfire — or even spread out blankets on the ground — to mimic the feel of a campfire.

One caution: keep a close eye out if your good patio furniture is positioned near your fire pit. Cushions can easily be singed by flying sparks and smoky residue.

No matter how you’ll use your fire pit or where you place it, consider how breezes blow on your property and how smoke may impact your neighbors. Place your fire pit at least 15 feet from your house and anything else flammable, including sheds, wood decks, swing sets, or shrubbery. Allow plenty of room for seating around the structure.

The most common fire pit fuels are gas and wood. Each has pros and cons.

Gas and propane burn at lower temperatures and are smoke free. Plus, it’s convenient to flick an on/off fuel switch rather than coax along kindling. If you choose a gas or propane option, you’ll pay more for a professional build and fuel line hook up. And you’ll need to keep your gas or propane tank full.

Wood burning fire pits are by far the most common. Firewood is readily available and

Garden Party cheap — or even free, if you or a neighbor have trees removed. And who can resist roasting a hot dog or marshmallow over a crackling fire? You can also safely burn artificial fire logs made mostly of wax and sawdust in your fire pit. Be aware that wood burning fire pits can be smoky, especially if there’s a breeze.

There can be ash and soot to clean up, too.

Regardless of the option you choose, be aware of best safety practices to prevent accidents.

Fire Pit Safety Tips Most fire pit accidents, says Benton Outdoor Living, are from people pouring gasoline or dropping other hazardous materials into the fire. Before lighting the fire, check to see that the fire pit lid can fit over top of the material inside of the pit. Then, make sure that flammable materials and fluids are well away of a fire pit in use.

Keep the lid, a fire extinguisher, and a fire blanket close by in case of emergency. Once you’re finished with your fire pit gathering, be sure your fuel switch is turned off (for gas or propane-fueled fires) or that all burning materials are doused with water (for wood-fueled fires.)

But while it’s burning, enjoy the crackling logs and glowing flames.

“A warm fire can extend the use of your patio or outdoor space,” say the pros at Benton Outdoor Living. “Sit back and relax — and enjoy the coziness.” LW

That’s good news for local shoppers searching for deals on clothing, home décor, housewares, and gifts this holiday season.

The bargain-seeking craze began before the onset of the global pandemic and didn’t stop. During the lockdown, online sellers continued to post their items for sale while buyers spent their money at online resale sites because they couldn’t shop in person.

Now, brick-and-mortar resale stores have reopened and in-person sales are up.

Plenty of those bargains are to be had in secondhand stores right in our area. While prices are a factor in the trend, they’re just one reason that shoppers are digging for deals now more than ever before.

Consignment Stores: Good for the Seller, Good for the Buyer The 2020 lockdown has created an unusual situation in local consignment and thrift stores.

“Everyone was homebound,” says Patsy Turner, co-owner of Good Things Consignment & More in Clover, which has been in business for twenty years. “They spent all those months cleaning out their closets and garages, then brought items in to consign.”

After being closed for seven weeks, Good Things re-opened in late spring and since then, Patsy and her co-owner and sister Carol 36

While thrift stores accept donations outright, Good Things and other consignment shops agree to pay the consignor after goods are sold. Good Things has close to 3,000 consignors who drop off 20-30 items at a time and receive 40% of each item’s selling price.

“We have no shortage of people wanting to sell things,” says Patsy.

Patsy and Carol accept quality, lightly used women’s clothing, footwear, accessories, and home décor to fill Good Things’ racks. “We tried selling men’s clothing,” says Patsy. “But after a year when it didn’t move, we discontinued it.”

The same is true, says Patsy, for collectibles.

The consignment arrangement is win-win for the seller (who gets a portion of the sales price for her used items) and the buyer (who gets screened, quality merchandise at a good price.) “We put new things on the floor every day and the mix of merchandise is one-of-akind,” says Patsy. “If you come in to browse and see something you want, then you’d best buy it right away because someone else will get it before you come back.”

Resale: Luxury Labels, Less Crowded Another draw to consignment and thrift stores these days: their size. In the wake of re-opening, shoppers want to avoid crowds.

“Our sales have picked up considerably since we’ve re-opened,” says Anna Majors,

manager of Echo Consignment Boutique in Lake Wylie. “Shoppers want to support local businesses, but they also want to limit their exposure.”

While caution has pulled shoppers back into specialty shops like Echo over big box stores, the personal touch and sense of family, too, have made Echo’s cash register ring up strong sales in the wake of the pandemic.

Anna knows her customers’ preferences, so when a consignor drops off a favorite label or style in just the right size, she makes a phone call to a customer she knows is interested.

As in many consignment stores, Echo’s merchandise is not like items you’d find at rummage sales or as hand-me-downs from your mother’s college co-ed days. Chico’s, Talbots, Ann Taylor, Gap, Gucci, Kate Spade, J. Jill, Coach, Michael Kors, White House Black Market, and other top-of-the-line name brands fill Echo’s racks and shelves. In today’s consignment world, they’re considered to be “resale” items, an upscale subset of secondhand merchandise. These luxury or designer labels retain their value even after being resold time after time.

That staying power allows for repeated re-use and resale and is favored by what’s become known as the “sustainability shopper.”

Sustainability consumers prefer purchases that lessen production’s impact on the environment. High-quality clothing, shoes, accessories, and home décor can be bought and sold over and over, which decreases the production burden on natural resources.

Feature Habitat ReStore, and Salvation Army Thrift Store — are usually operated by and for a charity or nonprofit organization. They depend on donations to stock their shelves and are considered to be less choosy in what they accept for sale than consignment vendors.

Price tags reflect an item’s condition.

Sweet Repeat Thrift Store in Lake Wylie is the fundraising arm of its charitable foundation of the same name. Sixty-eight volunteers and five part-time employees sort, price, and stock donations and manage the store’s cash register.

During 2019, Sweet Repeat distributed its profits to 27 qualified local charities. This year — in spite of being closed ten weeks during the pandemic — the foundation will support 31 nonprofit organizations in and around York County. Sweet Repeat also presents three scholarships to Clover High School graduates each year.

“We have incredibly faithful donors and shoppers,” says Cathy Mann, the foundation’s president.

Sweet Repeat operates a donation shed behind its store where supporters can drop off contributions in person four days a week.

The shop accepts clothing, home décor items,

small kitchen appliances, utensils, sports equipment, plates, glasses and dishes, electronics, books, movies, games, and toys to stock its shelves. Stock turns over quickly. Its literal mixed bag means you may leave with a brand-new wreath for your front door, a crib layette with its original sales tags intact, or lightly used designer label jeans, depending on the day. During the holiday season, Sweet Repeat’s back room is transformed into a winter wonderland where you can shop for decorations, holiday items, and gifts. “Christmas is a huge money maker,” says Cathy Mann.

Whether because they’ve decluttered or are hoping to avoid crowds or simply enjoy the thrill of the chase, shoppers come from all over Charlotte and York County to browse in Sweet Repeat. The merchandise, they say, as good or better than the quality of items in department stores like Belk. And the prices are hard to beat.

“When I was growing up, thrift stores were thought of as junk stores,” says Cathy Mann.

“But that’s definitely no longer the case.”

Daughter of Lake Wylie couple pens third coloring book in Amazing States series

C

oloring book author and illustrator Laura Murray has launched the third book in her Amazing States series called Amazing South Carolina, a scenic journey through the Palmetto state’s 46 counties.

Her first coloring book, illustrated by Murray herself, was Amazing Alabama, a representation of all the counties in the state, including iconic images and a few lines of back stories for each. It was followed by Amazing Georgia, and now Amazing South Carolina.

The daughter of Lake Wylie residents David and Anne Allen, Murray was born in South Carolina, grew up in Georgia and now lives in Alabama. Although she lived in South Carolina only a few years as a child, Murray considers it her home state. “My whole family lives there and I’ve driven back and forth to the Upstate my whole life,” she said. “I’ve gone on countless trips to Myrtle Beach and Charleston, hiked to see waterfalls along Highway 11 and walked where my Revolutionary War ancestors fought at Kings Mountain. The Palmetto state runs through my blood.”

“Laura was always an inquisitive child,” said her father, David Allen, who spent 44 years in sales at Worthington Steel, covering South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Mississip-

pi and Alabama. “I traveled the whole week when she was growing up, but from Friday evening through Sunday, I was hers,” Allen said. “We’d pull out a road map and I would invent games, like finding this town or locating what was in the next town. If she couldn’t find a site, I’d say, ‘Well, find Highway 25.’”

A pen and ink artist, Murray worked more than 15 years as a corporate designer--6 of those for Communicorp Aflac--where her job was to turn a client’s vision into a marketable print piece.

But with frequent assignments of “schedules with impossible deadlines,” the designer decided to make a switch, starting her own design and illustration business. Murray recalled one particularly hectic schedule that became a moment of reckoning.

Making the transition from the corporate world It happened on Mother’s Day in 2015 when she was at the peak of stress. On the Friday prior to Mother’s Day, she was working on a project where she was the central point person. The company had called a meeting between all parties involved—marketing, production, schedulers, designers—and announced that the job had to go to print early

Feature the next week, following Mother’s Day. Murray was told that she would “just have to take work home” with her (not because something went wrong or someone dragged their feet, she recalled, but because that was the nature of the business).

“We worked on very tight timelines” she said. “I remember sitting at the patio table that Sunday working while my husband and kids were inside cooking dinner for me. I just cried and cried because I couldn’t even enjoy my special day.”

That was when Murray’s husband, Steve, brought her a drink and asked the magic question: “Why do you stay if it makes you so miserable?” He told her that they were in a position where she could quit and take some time off, spend the summer with the kids-who were 9 and 13 at the time--and look for something else in the fall after school started.

That was 2015 and she never went back.

“My husband has supported me every step of the way, she said, “from ideas I’ve had for the business, to art shows where he had to come help me set up a tent at 5 a.m. and sit

there with me all day, and pushing me to always figure out how to be the best I can be.”

Murray said her dad has been inspirational also, given his broad travel experiences along the interstates and backroads of the region.

“Dad was so excited to learn that I had accepted the offer to design a South Carolina book,” she said. “We grabbed a pot of coffee and a map and headed for his kitchen table where he and I pointed out places and gems that we thought would add value and interest to the book.

Now, Murray loves going on weekend trips, meeting new people, touring local museums, sampling mom-and-pop restaurants, giving book chats and driving through small towns.

Sometimes she searches for coloring books at festivals. Although her publisher, NewSouth Books, has given her an open-ended deal to choose her favorite states for the Amazing States Coloring Books series, she said that she has pushed “pause” for now. “The southeast is Laura and her father today. on the horizon, however,” she said.

Camp Thunderbird adopts new programming during pandemic

arter’s elementary school doesn’t have a ropes course, an Alpine tower, or an equestrian barn. But he and his friends shimmy up and down cords, zip across the meadow, climb rocks, feed horses, and sail on Lake Wylie — all during recess.

Carter is enrolled in School Days+, a remote learning and enrichment program at Lake Wylie’s Camp Thunderbird that launched 42

this fall in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic’s rise in virtual and home learning.

“We’re providing a way for kids and families to be successful and safe while they adjust to this new way of doing school,” says Anna Mooney, Senior Program Director at YMCA Camp Thunderbird. “In the process, we’re creating other kinds of safe recreational programming, too.”

School Days+ is just one program Camp Thunderbird has adopted as it adapts its programming during the era of social distancing.

Safety First Prior to the 2020 summer season, Camp Thunderbird made adaptations so that its 84 years of outdoor fun could continue on its 118 acres and nearly two miles of shoreline. The

Feature priority was to keep staff and campers safe.

“Fortunately, social distancing is not as hard when you’re outside,” says Anna. “Camp Thunderbird has plenty of open spaces. We were able to draw on those resources as we adapted to new safety procedures.”

The camp added additional precautions by conducting daily health and temperature checks for staff and campers, using face masks, serving meals outside in covered pavilions, and sanitizing hands repeatedly. Overnight cabin groups stayed together throughout the day, operating as “family pods.” Day campers, too, stayed together in small groups and didn’t intermingle.

“We had to go through a learning process to learn the new safety protocols,” said staff member Madison Hansen. “But after a couple of weeks, the precautions simply became our new normal.” Those efforts paid off with a healthy summer program that served an average of 135 day campers and 220 residential campers weekly for eleven weeks, supported Students on Camp Thunderbird’s banana boat. And when the new school year rolled around, those safety techniques were already part of the camp fabric.

School on Screens and Canoes for Recess As a YMCA Greater Charlotte branch, Camp Thunderbird has been able to offer its facilities and staff as an approved remote learning site for the YMCA School Days + program.

“During the summer, we listened to members of the community,” says Heather Briganti, YMCA Greater Charlotte senior director of communications. “We wanted to continue to meet their needs.” Turns out that what many families needed most was virtual school support, leading the YMCA to develop School Days + and offer it at twelve locations across the Charlotte metro area.

Feature schedule, making sure they login at the appropriate time for live instruction. “Each one is in a different grade at a different school,” says staff member Moe Krantz. “We make sure they stay on task and complete their work. And then they get to do activities that they don’t normally get to do at school.”

Beyond virtual learning oversight, Camp Thunderbird is able to provide the kind of after-school program that parents and students can only dream about. Once students log offline for the day, they sample archery, sailing, putt putt golf, disc golf, basketball, soccer, swimming, canoeing, even visit the camp’s horse barn or undertake the challenge course.

Current School Days+ students are enrolled in Clover Virtual Academy or Charlotte Mecklenburg School systems, although the program welcomes students from any district. All are elementary-aged children, since middle schoolers and high schoolers are more able to manage virtual learning independently.

Field Trips Morph to Family Camp Public school limitations in the wake of the pandemic have put on hold Camp Thunderbird’s year-round Field Trip Program.

Since 1986, the camp has provided these midweek environmental education experiences serving 60 area schools and 13,000 students a year. In their place, Camp Thunderbird has launched once-a-month Family Camp experiences. These events allow a family to enjoy a weekend of camping together, occupying one cabin, so as to maintain social distancing from other camping families.

New also in 2020 is Mini Camp, also offered once a month. Campers arrive on Friday night and leave on Sunday morning. “Mini Camp is good for veteran campers who want to get their ‘camping fix’ during the off sea-

And thanks to the camp’s active COVID-19 procedures, private groups can reserve Camp Thunderbird for weekend retreats and conference meetings. “Those options are still open to churches, sororities, and family reunion groups,” says Anna. “We have created a sanitizing protocol to ensure safety and our staff can run activities and programs that groups request.”

Horsing Around One camp activity has meant expansion in 2020, rather than adaptation: equestrian sports. Horseback riding, by its very nature, is socially distanced.

Liz Dulski joined the camp staff as fulltime Equestrian Program Director in early 2020, just in time to plan for summer camp programming. Riding and horsemanship have long been included as a summer camp

add-on activity. The 2020 season was no exception. This summer, 147 campers opted into horseback riding.

Camp Thunderbird’s location and facilities position it perfectly for expanding its summer equestrian offerings into a year-round program. “We are fortunate to be in a metro area where plenty of people want riding lessons and most programs have waiting lists,” explains Liz. “Camp Thunderbird has horse barns, trails, and pasture, which makes a yearround equestrian program a good fit both for the camp and for the region.”

The Equestrian Program officially kicked off in September by offering private riding lessons for ages six through adult. Riders learn horsemanship as well as riding skills by preparing the horse for the lesson with haltering, brushing, saddling, and warm-ups, as well as taking care of the horse once the lesson is completed. The program’s seven horses — three owned by the camp and four leased — are housed in horse barns and graze in pastures on either side of the camp’s River Hills main entrance.

Andrea Hudson drives from Ballantyne to Lake Wylie once a week so her nine-year-old daughter, Brooklyn, can take riding lessons at Camp Thunderbird. “We’re lucky to have Liz and this program in the Charlotte area,” says Andrea. “Brooklyn is so much more confident since she started taking lessons here.” Next up for the equestrian program? Group lessons and therapeutic riding as the program builds its client base.

But in the meantime, Carter and his buddies finish up their latest arithmetic lessons under the watchful eye of Camp Thunderbird’s School Days + staff. Then they hurry outside to don lifejackets and climb into canoes.

It’s time for recess — and onward to plenty of other outdoor fun at Camp Thunderbird. LW

M

ost retirees pass their days at the golf course or playing with the grandkids.

Lake Wylie resident Wayne Hills spends his retirement a bit differently. He saves lives — canine and feline lives, that is.

“Our shelter wouldn’t be same without this guy!” says Bobbie Comer, director of the York County Animal Shelter, where Wayne invests forty to fifty hours a week as a volunteer. “He gives extra time to the animals who need special socialization. He goes the extra mile to take care of the shelter facilities and play yards. He fixes kennels, mows the yard, and does whatever is necessary to ensure that our animals have the support they need.”

But Wayne will be the first to tell you that it’s the shelter animals that gave him a special purpose when he needed it the most.

Katie Needed a Companion When Wayne retired after 32 years as a manager with Wix Filtration Systems in Gastonia, N.C., he was bored. Most of his family was gone and Wayne didn’t know what to do with the extra hours in his day.

“I wondered, ‘Is this all there is for me?’”

Wayne said. “I needed a purpose.” To fill the time, he volunteered with River Hills Emergency Medical Squad, worked for Home Depot and Lowe’s, and put in hours at the Clover Area Assistance Center.

But Wayne began to feel sorry for his cat, Katie, who stayed home while he went camp48

ing on weekends. One Saturday, he visited the York County Animal Shelter (YCAS) in search of a kitten who could become a companion for Katie. There, he found Jake, who fit the bill.

“The volunteer who helped me was so kind and so nice,” Wayne said. When Wayne returned on Monday to complete Jake’s adoption, he saw the tremendous need for shelter volunteers and began spending time with the canines to “get my dog fix.”

A Full-Time “Dog Fix” That was in 2011. Wayne’s “dog fix” turned into a passion for helping abandoned, neglected, or traumatized animals find their forever homes. It wasn’t long before Wayne dropped his other volunteer and work commitments and became a mainstay at the shelter. Since then, he has been on the front lines in bringing together pets and humans who need each other.

“The perception of a county shelter is different than the reality that you find here at YCAS,” says Wayne. “We do everything we can to save these animals’ lives.”

The shelter’s live save rate is currently considered to be on par with “no-kill” shelters. Of the 3,800 animals acquired by the shelter in 2019, more than 1,500 were adopted or fostered and nearly 2,000 were sent to animal rescues across the country to be placed in loving homes.

That live save rate, in the 90th percentile, is the result of a lot of hard work and an abun-

Dogs and cats are brought to or picked up by York County Animal Control as strays, from trauma or neglect, or when an owner surrenders the animal because they are unable to care for them anymore. “Some days, we receive 20-30 animals,” Wayne said. “Some days, it’s five.”

Animals are checked for a microchip and strays are advertised as lost to allow owners to retrieve them. If unclaimed within a specified timeframe, they become property of the county. After that, the animal receives a medical screening and behavioral assessment to determine their suitability for adoption.

Some need an extra bit of time to be ready for a new owner. That’s where Wayne excels, says fellow volunteer Anne Violanti. She describes him as “kind, patient, and warm” with the animals, particularly those that have been neglected or traumatized. “I love to focus on animals that need special attention,” Wayne said. “So many times, they just need some love.” Often it’s Wayne’s soft voice and gentle presence that pulls a cowering dog from the corner to lick his hand.

Once they’re ready, dogs and cats are offered for adoption to the public, fostered, or transported to any of over thirty vetted animal rescue agencies from Vermont to Florida.

Wayne became FYCAS president in December 2019.

Among FYCAS’ favorite activities, says Wayne, is its annual Santa Paws event. Each December, the nonprofit invites adoptees and their owners to return to the shelter for a visit, celebrate their adoptions, and get photos with Santa.

Meanwhile, FYCAS is working to raise animal welfare and safety awareness throughout the county. This fall Wayne led the nonprofit in sponsoring its first free community spay/neuter event, which served 27 local pets whose owners could not afford surgical or immunization fees. The $2,500 event price tag was funded by FYCAS. Volunteers are planning another spay/neuter day in January because the need is so great.

Wayne has also spearheaded FYCAS’ improvements to the dog play area, which have included installing an overhead covering for shade and protection for dogs and volunteers while they’re outdoors. He’s currently organizing a drive for funds and workers to develop the play area further with a deck, sandbox, and swim area.

“He always has the animals’ best interests at heart,” says fellow board member and volunteer Bonnie Hughes. “Wayne is willing to help and advocate for pets in any capacity.”

Saving Animals and Saving People That was the case with Libby, a mistreated pit bull. Wayne spent extra hours with Libby to gain her trust and re-socialize her.

After Libby had been placed in an adoptive home that didn’t work out, “she returned to the shelter with even more of a stigma,” says Wayne.

But then Keith, a quiet truck driver, came to the shelter looking for a dog to accompany him on his long and lonely interstate trips.

Ten minutes after Libby met Keith in the play area, Libby was licking Keith’s face as the two rolled on the ground, playing together.

“It was clear they belonged together,” says Wayne.

Once the adoption was finalized, Wayne escorted Keith and Libby to their car. “Today, you saved two lives,” he told Keith. “Libby’s, and the dog that will take her space on the adoption floor.”

Keith turned to Wayne with tears streaming down his face. “I think this dog is saving me,” he answered.

Libby — now named Abby — has turned into a world-class traveler. She is regularly featured on Keith’s Facebook page in his truck, whether it’s wearing sunglasses to ward off the Texas sun or asleep on her satin sheets in her doggie bed at the back of the truck cab.

“There is nothing more rewarding than helping what was once a broken animal find a forever home,” says Wayne, choking up. “I believe this is what I was meant to do.” LW

Friends of York County Animal Shelter (FYCAS) welcomes volunteers to help socialize adoptable cats, walk adoptable dogs, assist with adoptions, foster animals who are waiting for adoption, transport animals to rescue groups, attend and assist with shelter events, write social media posts for the shelter, and provide grant writing services.

s the wild year of 2020 comes to a close, we reflect on the Lake Wylie real estate market during this unusual year. In spite of fluctuations in our national and local economy, the real estate market remains robust. In our beautiful area, as well as in many other resort towns, the demand for housing has been strong as people have spent more time at home during the pandemic. Natural resources including lakes and lovely scenery, as well as outdoor recreation opportunities have become more important to families, and suburban areas that offer more space to live have become more attractive.

At the same time, many potential sellers have had a “wait and see” approach and have been reluctant to list their homes unless necessary, resulting in the fewest number of active listings we’ve seen in many years. Tight inventory coupled with high demand have resulted in prices inching up in our area, both on and off the lake. Properly priced homes are selling within days — even hours — of listing, often with multiple offers that are full asking price or more. Average sales price for waterfront homes is about $760,000 thus far in 2020.

Year-to-date waterfront home sales on Lake Wylie are up 18% in comparison to last year, despite the tight inventory. There are a record number of luxury home sales priced at $1 million and up, and there has been an uptick in new construction sales on the lake as well.

New construction sales on Lake Wylie are primarily in The Palisades in Charlotte and in the McLean communities in Belmont.

McLean waterfront homes generally sell for over $1 million. New waterfront homes in The Palisades are selling in the $500-$700k range, however most do not come with docks in place.

Development Update

This 40-year old cabin, located on its own peninsula off Concord Road in York, sold for $538,000. Its 570 feet of shoreline and longrange views contributed to its premium price for this type of property.

Waterfront lot prices have been climbing as well. Lower priced distressed lots, which were readily available a few years ago, are very rare indeed these days. Most waterfront lots are selling for close to $300,000, with prime locations and big view lots priced higher.

Waterfront cabin sales — often used as weekenders or vacation homes — have been selling well this year, which isn’t surprising considering vacation travel opportunities have been limited during the pandemic. Some buyers invest in a cabin with intention to build a permanent home in the future, using the older structure to enjoy the lake until they are ready to build. Many of these cabins have been extensively renovated, while others retain their “vintage” feel. The average price for a cabin on Lake Wylie has risen to about $420,000, representing an almost 20% increase over 5 years ago.

In the general real estate market, non-waterfront sales in York County are down 3% in comparison to last year, with inventory shortages responsible for the small decline in sales.

Average price per square foot is up 8% in comparison to 2019 — continuing on an upward trend as existing home prices climb and new construction prices rise.

The luxury home market is expected to continue to strengthen with economic growth in York County. Plans have been unveiled for the Carolina Panthers practice facility and corporate headquarters, and construction is expected to be completed in time for spring training in 2023. In addition to the football portion of the complex, there will be soccer fields, parks and walking trails, event areas and space for other businesses, attracting new executives as homeowners and patrons in our community. 2020 Year in Review - Annual Report

o one could have predicted what was to come in 2020 and that a pandemic would dominate the year’s concerns.

Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce got off to a great start for 2019-2020 and then in March 2020 a pandemic and quarantine hit.

The Chamber quickly adapted and helped its members and community, and communicated the ever-changing information, needs and opportunities. Here is a recap of the variety of activities, accomplishments and highlights during the past year: •

Adapted the Lake Wylie Visitor Center in one of the busiest corridors in the state to assist visitors and those needing info during a pandemic.

Held one very special Business After Hours networking event with the support of United Bank and Lake Wylie Liquors.

Continued to staff Lake Wylie Visitor Center with a team of volunteers during pandemic and spring quarantine.

Worked to initiate, coordinate and/ or support a variety of community projects and charitable efforts, includingfood drives, pet supply drives, school supplies and other groups efforts.

Supported members and their efforts to promote economic development and growth and prosperity for the community.

Promoted and marketed Lake Wylie throughout the year via materials, magazines, visitor center, speaking engagements, digital marketing and promotional events.

Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce is looking forward to — and planning — a healthy, active and productive year for 2021.

This year has been like no other. Communication, coordination and promotion, with and for our businesses and community, has been more important than ever.

It has been with pride and pleasure that we have presented the award-winning Lake Wylie Today magazine, a collaboration with SC Biz News for 11 years. The magazine features local stories, promotes events and showcases our community, businesses and chamber.

The Lake Wylie Living Newcomers Guide, an annual publication, will be updated and presented in January 2021. Newcomers are new customers who must decide where they will make purchases, select new doctors, dentists and pharmacies, and where they will have their cars serviced, and where they will buy new appliances, furniture, window treatments and even where they will get their hair styled and cut. The guide presents a variety of valuable information and promotes our local businesses and gives those businesses the opportunity to advertise to be able to reach newcomers when they first move to the area. The advertising deadline is December 10 and we urge you to contact the Chamber to reserve your space in the guide.

Local Chamber Boost is a company that works with chambers and their members to increase their online presence to have an edge with online reviews and to utilize social media to communicate, promote and grow their businesses.

The Chamber is leading by example and worked to achieve a goal of having 100 online reviews — which are all five stars! The Lake Wylie Chamber is one of only a handful of chambers in the US to have 100 online reviews. Our businesses also need to work to get more reviews so they stand out with positive feedback. It also gives businesses the opportunity to address any negative reviews if that should happen. Increased online engagement boosts a business’ digital presence and pushes them to top of web searches when prospective customers seek goods and services.

While this has been an unprecedented and challenging year for our businesses and our chamber, we continue to be grateful for our many blessings and opportunities.

This holiday season, give to our local charities, donate an unwrapped toy, canned goods, gloves, hats, scarves and coats, or help a neighbor. It is a time to count our blessings, give generously, and help our neighbors who may need a helping hand.
