Ways to give back this holiday season I

’m proud to live in an area that gives back to neighbors in need all year long.

While Thanksgiving usually marks the beginning of the season of giving, in Lake Wylie, it seems that each week there are various charity projects, fundraisers, volunteering projects and efforts to help others at all times.

It is a giving community every day of the year.

The holiday season is a perfect time to consider volunteering and donating to those less fortunate. Here are a few ideas for ways to give back to the local community this holiday season: Clover Area Assistance Center. There is an ongoing need for canned goods, toiletries and household staples like dish soap, soap, toilet paper, paper towels, laundry soap, diapers and shampoo. Checks are welcome, too.

The Lake Wyle Chamber of Commerce and Lake Wylie Pilot sponsor the “Neighbors Helping Neighbors” charity drive each year where our community members, church congregations and businesses can drop off canned goods, unwrapped toys, new hats, gloves, warm coats and scarves seven days a week at Lake Wylie Assisted Living, 4877 Charlotte Hwy, Lake Wylie.

The Sweet Repeat Foundation operates one of the most successful “recycling” charity projects in the area with its Sweet Repeat resale and thrift store located in Lake Wylie Plaza. Volunteers work all year long to sell contributed items and raise money for charity. This year, Sweet Repeat raised more than $100,000 to contribute to area charities The River Hills – Lake Wylie Lions Club raises money for charity with several annual events including their annual golf tournament, Charity Christmas Tree sale, producing 2

the River Hills Telephone Directory and the annual fall charity silent auction event. They are a major contributor to the Lake WylieRiver Hills Emergency Squad, a free service to the entire Lake Wylie area.

The May Day Golf event and foundation raises money to help the many homeless and disadvantaged students in the area. This October golf event raises funds earmarked to help homeless students and other student in need in the Clover School District. Contributions are accepted all year long. The Lake Wylie Children’s Charity raises funds to help families who have a very sick child and are in need of financial and community support for treatment. Checks can be sent to P.O. Box 5188, Lake Wylie, SC 29710. Visit www.lkwchildrenscharity.org for more information.

Clover Jaycees Santa’s Sleigh Project, which has for more than 30 years has matched community members with Clover School District students in need to provide gifts and other donations during the season.

Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina in Charlotte is always looking for volunteers and donations.

Thanksgiving and the holidays are a time to count our blessings and share time with family and friends.

There is much to be thankful for when you live at the lake. Each day comes with enjoyment of beauty, recreational opportunities, caring neighbors and friends.

It is also time to give to area charities and the many charity projects that benefit those that need a helping hand all year long.

Clover School District Community YMCA opens its doors to the community

A

first of its kind in the Clover community, the Clover School District Community YMCA officially opened its doors to the community on Monday, Oct. 17.

The Aquatic and Fitness Center features two indoor 25-yard pools, a gymnasium, fit-

ness room, dedicated exercise space for group classes, racquetball courts, and an elevated walking track. Additionally, the facility features an outdoor 50-meter pool with an adjoining water park, complete with slides, and play equipment for all ages.

Other projects include, renovations to Clover’s Memorial Stadium and the completion of Oakridge Elementary School and a new building for Clover Middle School. Additionally, renovations to convert the old Clover Middle School building into a Ninth Grade Academy are on schedule to be completed before the 2017-2018 school year.

As part of the district’s partnership with the Upper Palmetto YMCA, the building will be staffed and run by the YMCA. The swimming facility will also allow all fourth-grade students within the Clover School District to take swim lessons as part of the physical education curriculum.

Donations needed for Neighbors Helping Neighbors charity drive

T

he Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce and Lake Wylie Pilot will again hold a Neighbors helping Neighbors holiday toy, canned goods and warm clothing drive.

Lake Wylie neighbors are asked to contribute new, unwrapped toys for area children and canned goods and new gloves, scarves, hats and coats for local children and families in need. The drop-off location is Lake Wylie Assisted Living, 4877 Charlotte Hwy, Lake Wylie.

If you are unable to shop for the needed items, checks are welcome. Make checks payable to Clover Area Assistance Center and mail to P.O. Box 521, Clover, SC 29710. Count your blessings this holiday season and give to our neighbors that may need a helping hand.

O Christmas Lions learn about keeping the lake clean Tree(farms)!

river runs through here, and Emilee Syrewicze told River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions at their September dinner meeting how she, her staff, her board and numerous volunteers plan to keep it clean and flowing. Syrewicze is in her second year as executive director of the Catawba Riverkeeper Foundation. At Vermont Law School, she earned her JD degree with a focus on nonprofit and environmental law/ policy. The foundation’s mission to educate and advocate for the health of the Catawba River basin. As to the role Lake Wylie plays in preserving water for household use and recreation, she said it is the busiest lake per size on the waterway chain.

She does not recommend eating the fish that are caught in Lake Wylie. The water contains a high level of heavy metals. For decades the Lions Club has brought North Carolina’s finest, freshly cut Fraser Fir trees and wreaths to a borrowed Christmas Tree lot at Camp Thunderbird. Lights on the Lake: A night of fun and tradition A

tradition on Lake Wylie for 28 years, the annual holiday Lights on the Lake Boat Parade has evolved and expanded to one of our area’s biggest events of the year.

Last year’s attendance on the ground was at record numbers, with quite a few spectators out on the water as well. Area restaurants enjoyed a significant spike in early December business, a time which typically can be sluggish as patrons are busy with shopping and other holiday celebrations.

“The night of the boat parade is one of our

“Part of the success last year was due to the weather,” said Presley. “The temperature was in the seventies, and everyone was real excited about that. But even if it’s cold, people just bundle up and come out. As long as it isn’t pouring down rain, we have a good turnout.”

Presley and the staff look forward to the event.

“We’re kind of like the Griswalds with our decorations around here. So the boat parade fits right in. Having lights on the boats and on the restaurant is like having twice as many

lights, since they reflect in the water.”

Presley said that the main reason for the increase in crowds, though, is the addition of “Christmas by the Lake,” an effort spearheaded by Doug and Laurie McSpadden, that brings people together on shore for a family-friendly holiday celebration.

Doug has served as chairman of the Lake Wylie Chamber which sponsors the Light on the Lake event, and wanted to make the celebration more family friendly. The McSpaddens enlisted area churches to come out to the boat landing next to T-Bones and share Christmas music and hospitality.

tunity to learn about and celebrate the true meaning of Christmas,” said Laurie. “We have a live nativity, with animals provided by the Clover Future Farmers of America. The youth group from Christ the King church serves as the cast in the scene. Doug built a stable and the Boy Scouts help set everything up. It’s a community effort.”

This is the third year for “Christmas by the Lake,” and it has grown to about ten churches participating. Some provide hot chocolate and coffee, or marshmallows to roast by bonfires. A stage is set up, where choirs, praise bands and acting teams perform.

“This year we hope to have a DJ to play in between the performances,” added Laurie.

The highlight of the evening is the Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce produced “Lights on the Lake” parade, which begins at 6:30 p.m.

Participating boats gather at the docks next to T-Bones, and captains meet at 6 p.m. for instructions and parade order. The parade launches from T-Bones, circles around in front of RiverPointe and travels under the Buster Boyd Bridge.

the most creative lighting displays. Susan Bromfield, President of the Lake Wylie Chamber, said, “The boaters decorate any way they like. Some are Christmas themed, some are cartoon themed, movie themed, we’ve seen it all. It’s a festive time for everyone.”

Best viewing from the shore is from the deck at T-Bones and the Buster Boyd Public Boat Landing and access area. Homeowners along the shoreline are encouraged to join in the festivities by decorating their docks and homes on the lakeside. Bromfield added, “A lot of people along the parade route on the lake have parties and entertain the night of the parade, and stand along the shore to watch the boats.”

She adds, “We started this event almost 30 years ago, back when the restaurant here was the Hungry Fisherman. Our purpose over the years has remained the same—to attract people to the lake and support our area businesses.”

The Lake Wylie “Lights on the Lake” parade was the first of its kind in the Charlotte region. Depending on the weather, there are anywhere from ten to 25 boats participating.

Regardless of the weather condition, “The

Shoreline show must go on,” said Bromfield. The event requires a great deal of coordination, with the Coast Guard Auxiliary, police force and a host of community volunteers. T-Bones on the Lake is always a major sponsor of the event.

This year, Cabelas sporting goods store in Fort Mill joins in as a sponsor.

“This event has proven worthwhile for businesses,” said Bromfield. “Various restaurants, particularly those within walking distance of the boat landing, are packed the night of the parade. Then, once people have their boats decorated, it has a lasting effect.

The boat owners will bring their boats up to T-Bones for the next couple of weeks.”

The community is invited to celebrate the event as well as the season of giving by donating toys and food to those in need at the event.

T-Bones on the Lake collects “Toys for Tots” each year, and patrons are encouraged to bring toys for kids of all ages.

In addition, canned goods, monetary donations, and unwrapped toys will be collected for the Clover Area Assistance Center. Drop off for these donations will be at the Chamber of Commerce warming tent. We can’t wait to see you on the lake! LW

h yes. Entertaining over the holidays – these words just fill us with peace and joy, don’t they? Pictures swirl in your head of your friends and family by the fireplace enjoying scrumptious culinary delights with music softly playing in the background and you serenely joining them.

ou’d be hard-pressed not to get into the holiday spirit after a visit to the Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden. A favorite destination in the month of December, Holidays at the Garden transforms the botanical garden in Belmont into a winter wonderland each year.

More than 600,000 dazzling LED lights in trees and in sparkling fountains, horse-drawn carriage rides, holiday music, marshmallow roasting and more offer something for everyone. Holidays at the Garden has been held for more than a decade.

The Garden will have unique festive décor on display including a towering tree of orchids, illuminated displays and a special model train display depicting North Carolina’s Saluda Mountain Grade.

Staff and volunteers begin stringing lights, assembling decor and installing the seasonal horticulture displays as early as Labor Day. Planning for the massive display begins a full year in advance as the Garden assembles teams to execute each year’s theme.

“We really strive for something new and unique every year,” said Katy Widrich, director of events. “We also look for trends and themes that will set the stage inside the Visitor Pavilion and lead the guest through an experience they won’t find anywhere else.”

This year’s theme, that will accent the outdoor light display, is Balsam & Blue. Guests will

“Natural materials such as stone, driftwood and cut cedar branches harvested locally create context and a connection to place that build relevance and inherent familiarity,” said Peter Grimaldi, the Garden’s director of horticulture, who leads light installations as well as development of horticultural displays.

With the guidance of staff, the garden’s creative team of volunteers carefully assembles, paints and prepares wreaths, centerpieces and so much more. Together the team meticulously and strategically hangs each string of lights to create the twinkling winter wonderful guests have come to love.

Staff members are also busy booking entertainment, vendors and horse-drawn carriages along with coordinating the visits of Santa and Mrs. Claus. And don’t forget about the model railroads, developed and installed in partnership with volunteers from the Metrolina Model Railroaders club or the spectacular orchid tree, composed of more than 300 white orchids.

“We’re excited about a new color combination and custom light forms featured at the center of the display in the Scroll Garden,” said Grimaldi. “Structural elements in the horticultural display also lend themselves naturally a festive punctuation with holiday lights.”

Trim your tree Flowers, gifts and local charm at The Palmetto House

T

he Palmetto House in Clover offers more than just some pretty flowers.

This shop has evolved over the years into a floral and gift shop that provides unique gift items, decorative inspiration and plant and floral arrangements to celebrate every season of the year, and every season of life.

Linda Myers and three other ladies, who have since retired, opened the shop in Clover in 2004. Myers moved to our area about 40 years ago, when she had a young family. “I was looking for a sweeter, kinder place to raise my children and found Clover,” she said.

Myers worked as an artist in Lake Wylie’s “Flowers on the Plaza” shop in the early 1980s. It was there that she became interested in designing floral arrangements. When she moved her business to Clover, many of her Lake Wylie clients followed her there.

The four partners developed a solid reputation in the area. Myers and one of her partners even earned the Master Designer designation, indicating a level of floral design that requires a specific level of training and passing a rigorous exam. The exam covers plant and flower knowledge, care and handling, design and styles.

“When we took our test, there were over 500 applicants, and only eleven passed!” My-

ers remarked. “We were the only shop in the state of South Carolina that had two designers that passed the test.”

The combination of her skills and her commitment to customer satisfaction is the secret to success in providing floral arrangements for weddings, special occasions, gifts and memorials. “We are able to provide some very unique designs,” said Myers. “I’ll step up to any challenge a customer throws my way. I’ve been asked to do some pretty crazy things, particularly for weddings, but I love stepping outside of the box. I spend a lot of time with my customers, trying to understand their vision and making it come to life.”

Though floral is the major part of her business, the gift shop is a growing component, particularly after moving to its current location. “We’re in the old Adams house,” said Myers. “The house is over a hundred years old, and was in the Adams family for most of those years. The Adams are a big part of Clover’s history. They’re kin to the Jacksons, another family that has been in the area for a long time.”

“Some people think the house is haunted,” Myers said. “I don’t know about that. We’ve had some unusual experiences, so I don’t know. But things have settled down, so if there is a ghost, he must be happy with what

Feature we’ve done with the place,” she laughed.

The shop uses all the rooms of the house, with different themes in each room. The front room is the “Garden Room,” with gifts and decor for the landscape and garden. There’s a “Baby Room,” with items for the newborn and the nursery, a “Faith Based” room with inspirational gifts, and the “Palmetto Room” featuring Clemson, USC, and South Carolina-themed items. A “Seasonal Room” contains holiday gifts and decor for every special occasion on the calendar: Mother’s Day, Easter, Valentine’s, St. Patrick’s Day and especially the Christmas holiday.

“The Christmas season takes over the whole house,” said Myers. “We will have at least nine decorated trees, with complementary gifts relating to the theme. It takes a small army to put it all together.”

Myers designs the background and overall theme for each display, then enlists helpers to decorate the trees and help with the set up. All of the ornaments and decorations are for sale, and the displays are designed to provide customers with decorating ideas and inspiration.

“This year we’ll have a wildlife tree, with all sorts of animal and nature decorations.

play. It will be beautiful,” Myers said. “We’ll also have what I call a Dr. Seuss tree, with all kinds of goofy ornaments, fun stuff. We’ll have a Western tree, for all of the horse lovers, a faith-based tree, a Santa Claus tree, with lots of traditional Christmas decor. We’ll have a kitchen tree, for those people who like to decorate their kitchen islands or side tables with small trees, and a wine themed tree. And of course we’ll have the Palmetto tree, with college sports ornaments and gifts.”

In addition to decorations, and gifts, The Palmetto House offers fruit baskets, live and artificial decorated wreaths and of course, flower arrangements for the holidays.

Myers loves being part of the local business community. “All the folks in Lake Wylie and Clover have been so gracious and kind. With everything we offer, we keep the finest Southern traditions in mind, simple elegance, good taste and local charm. We try to offer everything at a good value, keep the prices as low as possible, with products that are unique and appealing, so people will be encouraged to shop local.”

Lions Club annual pancake breakfast caps off charitable year

S

ometimes it’s tough to get a kid to eat his breakfast. But the second Saturday in December, enticing children to breakfast is not a problem in Lake Wylie. In fact, kids of all ages look forward to this breakfast all year.

Traditionally, the River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club has hosted a Pancake Breakfast at Camp Thunderbird, with magician Adrian Gagnon, bounce tents, face painting, a visit and pictures with “Father Christmas,” and of course, plenty of pancakes, sausage and bacon.

It’s a chance for the Lions Club to reach out to the community, educate people about their mission and services and provide a fun “thank you” for supporting the club throughout the year. In the courtyard outside the dining hall, kids can get a close-up view of a firetruck and learn about fire safety and prevention in the

by Jan Todd “smoke house.” The Sheriff ’s Department will be on hand to introduce people to Justice, the drug-sniffing police dog and to educate people about the importance of seat.

“This has evolved to a very large event,” said Lee Kehler, Lions Club member and chairman of this year’s event. “It used to be attended by the Lions Club members and their families, but now people from all over the community come.

We’re expecting about 600 people this year.”

The Lions Club is one of the largest service organizations in the area. Chartered in 1975, the Lake Wylie’s Lions Club, has 168 members on its roll. “We are the most active and biggest Lions Club in the state of South Carolina,” said Kehler.

Each year the club contributes over $100,000 plus thousands of volunteer manhours to people in need and charitable orga-

nizations in the area (see sidebar). Each year, a committee evaluates needs and requests to determine which organizations receive Lions Club funds. “All of these charities need money desperately,” added Kehler. He has been a member of the Lions Club for nine years, invited by a neighbor to join. “Our expertise is raising money to give it away,” he explained.

Each year, the Lions Club holds several fundraising events, including a Christmas tree sale near the entrance to River Hills, a charity golf tournament, a benefit dinner in the fall, the River Hills annual directory, and the pancake breakfast in December.

One cause that is shared by all Lions clubs internationally is a sight program.

Since the Lions Club International’s inception in the early 1900’s, Lions have support-

“It’s a computerized system where a child looks into a camera, and the eye is photographed and analyzed for any eyesight loss or issues with the eyes,” explained Kehler. “We take this instrument to all of the schools in

the area and test kids for free. We can identify issues quite readily. We’ve taken this same instrument to places far and wide, even as far as Honduras,” he continued. “If we can help just one person identify a problem and get their eyesight fixed, it’s all worth it.”

welcome to have their eyesight evaluated for free. “It takes about one minute,” said Kehler.

The Clover Woman’s Club ‘Christmas in Historic Clover’ Tour

W

hen the world is in the midst of hustle and bustle during the holiday season, sometimes it’s nice to just slow down, take a leisurely stroll, sip some cider and take in the magic of an old time, small town Christmas.

You’ll have the perfect opportunity to do just that at the Clover Woman’s Club “Christmas in Historic Clover” tour. This year features four homes near downtown Clover, all within walking distance, plus a hair salon and a few other homes in outlying areas of Clover and Lake Wylie.

Judy Lark, longtime member of the club, has coordinated this fundraiser for several years. “Last year, the homes on our tour were more spread out,” she reflected. “That made it harder to get around to see all of the homes on tour. So this year, we’re featuring homes that are grouped closer together.”

Lark remembers one year, back when the tour was at night, when all of the homes were within walking distance. “We started out at the old Community Cash store, which is now the Bi-Lo. People parked there, and walked from house to house on the tour. It was 67 degrees that night, and everything was lit by candlelight. I’ll never forget that!”

Today, the tour is during the afternoon. This year’s tour is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 3, from 2-6 p.m. “We’re really excited about the homes we have lined up so far,” said Lark. “We have Dr. Perry’s old home, now owned by Tim Reed.

Dr. Perry was a doctor in Clover for many years. He loved gardening, and the home has four or five gardens around it. It has been totally restored and should be a treat to see.”

Dr. Perry’s old home, located at 215 Neely Street, was the first one built in the neighborhood in the late 1950’s. It is on a three acre tract of land. The second home in the neighborhood, also on this year’s tour, was built for Matt Wingard, a beloved band director at Clover High School, and his wife Janet, who was a schoolteacher. Prior to serving as band director, Matt Wingard was an accomplished jazz musician who played backup for Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Liberace, Sony and Cher and several other music icons.

and Phil is an avid collector and authority on Edgefield pottery, early American stoneware and face jugs. He is looking forward to sharing stories about some of his collection during the home tour, along with family memorabilia and treasured heirlooms.

Phil said, “My dad loved a wood fire, and

so the home has a double fireplace, with one side facing the living room and the other facing the kitchen.” Phil has added a few more mantles, a perfect place to show some of his collection amidst holiday greenery.

Lark has been a member of the Clover Woman’s Club for 35 years.

“It’s a social outlet, and a community service organization.” she said. “Our meetings are once a month during the school year, and we usually have a speaker or some sort of activity. We have a new membership tea each fall.” In addition to the scholarship fund, members also contribute to Clover Area Assistance Center with food donations and help with various other community service efforts.

New members are always welcome. The club has two charter members currently, ladies who have participated since the beginning of the club. “They still come to every meeting!” exclaimed Lark. “It’s a great way to get to know other women in the community and make a contribution.” Tour tickets are $10 and available at The Palmetto House, “Good Things” Consignment shop, and the Greater Clover Chamber of Commerce as well as each home location on the day of the tour. A short drive away, Xscape Hair Salon, owned by Charity Westmoreland Caldwell will host a tour stop. Tour director Judy Lark said, “They always go ‘all out’ with their decorations. It is something to see!”

A few other stops are in the works for this year’s tour. Proceeds from the tour go towards a scholarship given to a graduating Clover High School female student.

Nell Moses, club member and chair of the scholarship committee, said that the scholarship is awarded based on several criteria.

“The girls write an essay, and let us know about their school activities, community service, academics, and needs. We put a lot of focus on their needs as well as their service.

Since we’re a club that was founded based on community service, that element is important.” Students may apply through the guidance office at the high school.

The Clover Woman’s Club was established in 1950, with the purpose of contributing to activities that enhance the lives of the citizens of the Clover community. The annual home tour is one of two major fundraisers held each year, both of which fund the scholarship awarded.

The second fundraiser is a “Card Party,” held in the spring. According to Lark, “The Card Party started out with bridge, but has evolved to any type of card game. We’ve had as many as 100 ladies attend this event, and it is always a lot of fun. We serve refreshments and sometimes have a roving fashion show.”

The next Card Party is scheduled for March 9, and ticket information will be available on the club’s website.

‘Year for the record books’ in Lake Wylie real estate by Drew Choate

I

t’s a year for the record books for Lake Wylie real estate. In York County, home sales through third quarter are up a strong 11% in comparison to last year. Non-waterfront home sales in the luxury category (sales price over $500,000) are up 35%. Waterfront home sales on Lake Wylie are up a whopping 51%. In fact, this year 115 waterfront homes were sold through the end of September, an all-time high on the lake.

At the beginning of fourth quarter, there were 33 waterfront homes under contract, a level unheard of so late in the year. Of those homes under contract, eight had listing prices over $1 million, and four of those were over $2 million, which is unprecedented on Lake Wylie. Most of these luxury sales are in York County.

Thanks to stronger waterfront sales in the $700,000+ segments this year, average price has increased to $606,000, breaking the $600K mark for the first time since 2010. However, the increase in average price is not necessarily due to price recovery on homes, but due to a shift in the mix to the higher priced, slightly larger homes.

Inventory is very low in waterfront homes under the $700,000 price point, and new listings in this segment have been go-

Properties that are close to “move in ready” are moving more quickly, whereas older properties needing extensive updates or repairs tend to take longer to sell in this market.

Buyers for lake homes over $700,000 have more choices relative to the size of the buyer demand, and this segment has a much longer time on market than the lower priced segments. Buyer expectations in this price category tend to be higher, updated homes with nice views or strong location.

Our area continues to thrive and grow, and we should be able to look forward to a strong real estate market into the new year.

28th Annual “Lights on the Lake” Holiday Boat Parade

T

he lake will light up with one of Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce’s most popular events, the 28th annual “Lights on the Lake” Holiday Boat Parade, to be held on Saturday, Dec. 10. Each year the event grows in number of participants and popularity, and this year many more boats are expected to join in. Homeowners are encouraged to participate too by decorating their docks as a way of adding to the festivities.

A Friday evening preview of decorated boats will be held at T-Bones on December 9.

This allows for a showcase of boats decorated for the holidays to dock at T-Bones for viewing and a fun filled evening.

Also added, will be warming huts along the shoreline during the boat parade creating a Christmas Village atmosphere. Many of the area churches will host the tents and will have hot chocolate, caroling and festivities. More surprises are in the works.

On Saturday December 10, boats will meet at T-Bones Dock, SC Hwy. 49 by Buster Boyd

2016 Year in Review Annual Report

L

ake Wylie Chamber of Commerce had another very active and productive year.

Here is a recap of the variety of activities and accomplishments and Lake Wylie highlights during the past year: • Positively Promoted Lake Wylie and Economic Development all year long. Look around in every direction.

• Operated a Lake Wylie Visitor Center in one of the busiest corridors in the state.

• Held more than 10 Business After Hours networking events with the support of 20 sponsors.

• Held Ribbon Cuttings and Grand Openings with area new and expanding businesses.

• Staffed a beautiful Lake Wylie Visitor Center and developed a team of volunteers.

• Operated a Small Business Center in Lake Wylie with 6 beautifully furnished rental offices with conference room and hospitality area, has been perfect for small businesses to launch or downsize and remain in Lake Wylie.

• Hosted Spring Appreciation Luncheon and Fashion Show • Presented Annual Splash Dash- showcasing Lake Wylie with a premiere regional running event.

• Successfully presented and promoted Lake Wylie Events and Activities throughout the year by collaborating with Lake Wylie Pilot and Lake Wylie Today Magazine.

• Helped YMCA Camp Thunderbird to promote and raise money to facilitate Lake Wylie Fourth of July Community Fireworks Display • Hosted an outstanding Golf Tournament and after golf event at River Hills Country

• Successfully served as Legislative Liaison

• Published 10 full color page quarterly newsletter in Lake Wylie Today.

• Supported the efforts to get a county park plan for the area.

• Presented the 27th annual Lights on the Lake –Holiday Boat Parade, an event that uniquely promotes Lake Wylie during the winter.

• Developed and collaborated to publish Lake Wylie materials to support members and tourism.

• E- communication capability by utilizing chamber “e-communications” • Collaborated with Lake Wylie Pilot to have chamber news and chamber activities and events in paper .

• Maintained Lake Wylie website and social media 24/7 .

Ed Stewart Retires after 18 Years of Service C

hamber board member and former chairman, Ed Stewart is retiring after 18 years of service.

Under Ed’s leadership as chairman, the Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce fulfilled its long range goal to secure a permanent location for the chamber to be able to provide expanded visitor services. In 2007, the chamber purchased a building in Lake Wylie Business Centre to house the chamber, a Lake Wylie Visitor Center and Lake Wylie Business Centre. The Roads Less Traveled

“O

ver the river and through the woods, to grandmother’s house we go …“ It seems like travel is a part of most of our holiday celebrations. I remember many a Christmas Eve when I was a child, packed to the max in my family’s station wagon, with my parents and five kids, two dogs, and sometimes a cage with a bird or a couple of rodents, barreling down the highway towards Grandmama’s. My dad would keep us preoccupied on the long trip, encouraging us to search the sky for Rudolph’s red nose.

I remember one year, I decorated the car with paper wreaths, snowflakes, and “Merry Christmas, Y’all!” signs. Foolishly, I pasted them all on the left-hand side of the car, where I thought people would see them as they passed us by. Foolishly, because I should’ve know that my dad spent the bulk of his driving time in the “fast lane,” passing by the stream of cars on the right side. I guess I can understand that, because wouldn’t you drive in the fast lane if your car were full of five rambunctious kids, two dogs and a cage of rodents?

Back in those days, we’d lay the seats down in the back of the station wagon, and we’d pile in with sleeping bags and stretch out. I’ll never forget the trip where Rhoda and Sue (my two pet mice) somehow escaped their cage during a late night ride. All of my sisters and brother were sleeping, and

Mom and Dad were enjoying a few moments of peace heading down Interstate 40 towards the Carolinas. Suddenly, I felt two sets of tiny feet scampering over me, and sounded the alarm. Okay, I emitted a blood-curling scream into the Silent Night, panicked that Rhoda and Sue might be squished by my siblings or eaten by one of the dogs.

And you wonder why my dad was always in such a hurry to get where we were going.

Over the years, I’ve come to appreciate a slower pace. Most of the time, I like to avoid interstates and take the road less traveled. And the rewards are rich! Only on the backroads can you find a gas station proudly advertising, “Worms and Coffee!” Or a fruit stand named “Use’ta be Buster’s.” Then, there is the inevitable yard art outlet, with an acre or two of concrete statues, fake deer, gnomes and my personal favorite, the triple decker pink seahorse birdbath.

Of course, it is best to see yard art in its natural habitat. There’s always some yard where someone buys into the “more is better” philosophy, and the amount and variety of yard art is to be marveled upon. Such things cannot be enjoyed at 65 mph. A backroad’s pace is necessary.

Recently, my husband and I were on a two lane in the deep country of the Carolinas and drove by a yard with more than a dozen clawfoot bathtubs, each serving as a planting bed

in a garden. We had to pull over and take a picture of that one.

Out in the Land of the Backroads, ordinary people are allowed to name the roads. Some honor their families by using names: Cook Road, Frank Watts Road, Currence Road in Clover. Others show their sports loyalties: Tiger Paw Lane, off of Allison Creek Road.

But some roads? You gotta wonder about the state of mind of the folks who named “Agony Acres Road” in Clover. They couldn’t have been thinking about resale value of their farm land when they came up with that one.

They’re probably related to the folks who named “Achin’ Back Acres Farm” just over the North Carolina line near Spartanburg.

Speaking of marketing at its best, out in the wilderness of Tennessee, we stumbled across a choose-and-cut tree farm named, “Hard Luck Christmas Tree Farm.” I am not making this up.

My husband is from Yadkin County, North Carolina, which could be said to have nothing BUT backroads. He grew up taking short cuts across Dinkins Bottom Road, and had friends that lived on Booger Swamp Road. I don’t even wanna delve into that.

So as you head over the river and through the woods this holiday season, I encourage you to jump off the interstate for a bit and see what you can find. Just leave the mice at home. LW
