t is a pleasure to introduce the Spring 2019 issue of Lake Wylie Today.

Spring is in the air with all its beauty and blossoms. Look around and Lake Wylie is exploding with growth and things are happening all around us as we kick off 2019. It is already evident that Lake Wylie is heading for another dynamic year.

This issue of Lake Wylie Today is packed full of information and reflects a vibrant community with a lot going on. Pour a cup of coffee or glass of wine, relax and read this issue and you too will be amazed at all that is going on in and around Lake Wylie.

You will read about the activities, events and festivals happening all around the area this spring. The Strawberry Festival held in May in Fort Mill that has been called No. 1 festival in South Carolina. The area’s celebration of spring includes the beauty of Glencairn Gardens in Rock Hill, the Come See Me Festival in Rock Hill, springtime events at Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden and the St. Patrick’s Day Festival held in March in Clover.

As spring blossoms, so do the many opportunities to enjoy the community events and attractions nearby. There are also many beautiful scenic areas that enable people to hike, bike, boat and explore the scenery and nature trails. And, of course, spring is a beautiful time of year for a country drive to visit Bush ‘N Vine, The Peach Tree, South Forty Farm and other farm stands in the area.

The real estate development update portrays a tight market in terms of inventory as more and more folks look to the area for their new home. Look around Lake Wylie and there is continuing evidence of growth with new neighborhoods being built, businesses opening, major investments and other changes.

style. It features some stylish outdoor living and entertaining spaces that allow homeowners and their guests to enjoy all the lake has to offer from the comfort of well-appointed spaces in their own yards.

Food For Thought will feature tequila and its versatility and popularity. This section of the magazine will always highlight cocktails, wine or a favorite drink, dining excursions, local restaurants or foods of interest.

You’ll also find features on folks who’ve helped make Lake Wylie a great place to live and work, such as state Sen. Harvey Peeler and longtime Chamber of Commerce member Don Long.

The Mailbag is an eclectic collection of photos and items of interest from the Lake Wylie area and community. It previews the annual Lake Wylie Home Tour, a new attraction at Carowinds, some of the major spring festivals, the good volunteer work of our local organizations and much more.

Chambers celebrate largest York County Day

T

he four chambers of commerce in York County hosted the annual York County Day on Dec. 7 at Carowinds. The event was sponsored by Atrium Health, among many other area organizations, and hosted by Carowinds during its Winterfest celebration.

With appearances from nearly 40 state legislators and remarks from South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster, the event was a huge success. Through this effort, the chambers set out to communicate that, with all that York County contributes to the economy of South Carolina, its rapid growth requires state-level assistance in addressing urgent infrastructure and education needs.

River Hills/ Lake Wylie Lions Club celebrates successful 2018

T

he River Hills/Lake Wylie Lions Club held their annual holiday dinner Dec. 4. Highlights included a performance by the choral group from the S.C. School for the Deaf and Blind in Spartanburg and awards to club members R.J. Phillips and Peggy Upchurch.

Phillips received the Franklin Mason Fellowship, and a donation will be made in his honor to promote vision and hearing conservation across the state. Upchurch was named a Melvin Jones Fellow, an award inspired by the work of the Lions Club International founder.

The Lions Club also made a $5,000 donation to the School for the Deaf and Blind and had a pizza dinner for the singers prior to their performance. Lions member Frank Van Leer took on the role of Father Christmas and handed out gifts to the singers.

Rotarians give back to community with various projects

T

he Lake Wylie and Clover Rotary clubs perform charitable work throughout the community.

Rotarians received a check for $1,000 from the Clover High School Interact Club to support PolioPlus, a worldwide initiative to eradicate polio.

Rotarians also collect food and prepare baskets for distribution to needy families in the area.

Raffle tickets sold during a recent auction at the former T-Bones restaurant raised $10,500 to fund many community projects.

Cars with Coffee Cars with Coffee will again be held on the third Saturday of the month from May through September at Lake Wylie Assisted Living at 4877 Charlotte Highway, Lake Wylie, from 8–10 a.m.

A seasonal farmers market will complement the event in summer.

Lake Wylie Home and Garden Tour April 27

T

he Lake Wylie Home and Garden Tour, sponsored by the Clover-Lake Wylie Republican Women’s Club, is scheduled for 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, April 27.

Now in its 33rd season, the tour will feature up to six homes in the Lake Wylie area. Proceeds from the event benefit the Fay Bergman Scholarship, awarded yearly to one or two students in the Clover attendance area. Since 1986, CLWRW has awarded 36 scholarships to area students.

Ticket holders can listen to live music provided by local musicians in several of the homes. Midway through the tour, visitors can pause for lunch and take in a strolling fashion show at the River Hills Country Club.

“In the past our tours have highlighted the very best of easy living across Lake Wylie’s inland and waterfront homes,” said Peggy Upchurch, a former president of the CLWRW. Past stops on the tour have included the home of John and Geri Rinehart, featured in 2017 after a

Copperhead Strike roller coaster to debut at Carowinds

C

arowinds’ newest thrill ride, Copperhead Strike, debuts along with the park’s 2019 opening on March 23.

The attraction takes riders into a secluded hideaway in the Blue Ridge Mountains,

where “Granny Byrd” makes her famous secret “jam.” What Granny is really concocting in her copper pots isn’t jam, but something that has a lot more bite and is a lot less legal.

The unsuspecting visitors are whisked away

from the wrong end of Granny’s shotgun by the park’s new ride.

As the first double launch roller coaster in the Carolinas, Copperhead Strike delivers twice the boost and twice the bite. “Double launch” means not only does the ride accelerate at an incredible 0 to 42 miles per hour in 2.5 seconds, but midway through, a second thrust of acceleration launches you into the next half of the experience.

A series of fast, tight, close-to-the-ground maneuvers are tangled with five head-overheels inversions — the most of any double launch coaster in North America. What’s more, this serpent of a ride never lets up throughout the entire chase — over half a mile of steel and adrenaline.

Clover St. Patrick’s Day Festival is March 16

C

lover’s annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival returns for the 21st year on March 16.

The day includes a parade, a 5K Leprechaun Leap run and walk, live music, dancing, food and arts and crafts vendors and much more.

The festivities will take place downtown and are expected to draw more than 6,000 attendees. There is no charge for any of the entertainment.

Early registration through Feb. 28 for the Leprechaun Leap is $20 and can be done online at www.upymca.org/leprechaun-leap.

Tequila!

A grownup’s guide to navigating the world of Mexico’s treasured liquor

D

on’t even try to deny it! We all have them buried in our closet! You, I and the neighbor next door have at least one of those completely ridiculous, insanely childish, and totally outrageous stories that go hand in hand with a certain type of liquor. Yes, I am talking about that liquid fool’s gold – tequila.

Why do we get so deeply involved with a bottle of tequila and end up regretting it? Well, it is a simple answer. You actually think that you are tough enough, but in reality, you are not, nobody is.

The tequila in the middle of these outrageous stories is usually so bad and so offensive that it rivals most embalming fluids. It is made of the poorest quality ingredients and with some very questionable tactics. The liquid poison is most always packaged in a cheap plastic container made specifically to save on cost and designed to bounce off the hardwood floor when dropped, which is certain to happen as soon as the brain slowly ignores the body’s extremities.

Since the booze tastes so horribly bad, we dare one another to handle the 1.5 ounces without hesitation or any lame excuses. We down the liquid with such bravery, all the while holding a

stern appearance and praying to our God that one of us will soon quit all this nonsense.

One after another, the nasty liquid chases down your throat, never considering the power that this liquid fool’s gold packs. A minimum of 80 proof adds up and continues to add up, without any regard to fundamental mathematics of the human body. That is until … Bam! It hits you. “Down Goes Frazier!” in the words of the immortal Howard Cosell.

You make the personal and public oath to swear off this nasty stuff to all who care to listen.

We have all done it, said it, and declared it. You build the strength to kneel before the gods proclaiming, “NEVER AGAIN, NEVER AGAIN,” as these commonly repeated words echo off the white porcelain bowl. How tough are you now?

The Good Stuff By now, you are chuckling at one of your very own bad tequila stories and strengthening your oath to “never again” drink tequila. But please allow me to introduce some food for thought and perhaps get you to reconsider.

Your horrible memories of the morning after headache and the all-day nausea are most

definitely caused by the cheap, misrepresented, bottom shelf tequila often celebrated at college gatherings. What if I was to tell you that a quality tequila made from the best ingredients may treat your body a bit better and perhaps help you to avoid the dreaded hangover.

That’s right. A higher quality tequila enjoyed within moderation will not give you that miserable morning after experience. When you explore top shelf tequila, you will experience so many different expressions of agave and the interesting nuances of how a master distiller will process and age his/her distillate.

Adult Tequila First and foremost, real tequila must be made from distilling the plant core (pina or heart) of the blue agave plant. Blue agave looks like a cactus with spiked hair but it’s not officially a cactus.

It resides in a floral category specifically named Monocots.

Unfortunately, the best blue weber agave takes up to eight years to mature before harvesting. This means the good tequila is becoming more and more difficult to get. It also must be fully processed, “farm to bottle” only from

the Mexican state of Jalisco. Think of it as the tequila equivalent of the Champagne region of France. There are also a few other municipalities in Mexico that have a license to process the real thing, however the cartel must get their cut first before any tequila hits the streets. I am kidding, of course.

Good tequila is always labeled with an official declaration of 100% Puro Agave on the front of the bottle. Bad tequila companies will try and trick you by stating “Blue Agave” on the bottle but fail to post the ever important 100% alongside. Substandard tequila will have 51% Agave Juice printed on the bottle in an attempt to establish credibility.

However, the manufacturer will then add fillers, coloring, rum, sugar water, vodka or whatever is under the kitchen sink to fill the bottle and still call it tequila. Really, no joke, if the bottle does not say 100% Blue Agave, then you could be drinking 49% of just about anything from Mexico.

The next thing you should know about tequila is that it may be good for you, within moderation of course. Researchers say the minerals in blue agave can help the body to better absorb calcium and magnesium, both of which are great for strengthening of bones.

Scientists have also discovered that the agave in tequila can help to keep blood sugar levels low, which is great for the battle against diabetes.

Similarly, agave produces a hormone that tricks your stomach into feeling like it’s full for a longer period. This will help keep the late-night food cravings away and those unnecessary calories that pile on after midnight.

Furthermore, Mexican doctors were recommending a tequila cocktail (.5 oz tequila blanco, .5 oz agave nectar, .5 oz orange juice) to fight colds not too long before modern medicine came along. So, we can all forget that “apple a day keeps the doctor away” slogan. Just drink good tequila. “A shot a day will keep the doctor away.”

Timing is Everything The better brands that have been in business for a while most always offer various categories for you to pick from. The categories distinguish themselves by how much time the spirit ages in a white oak barrel taking on the flavoring and coloring from the barrel.

The clear liquid, or Blanco category, is tequila straight from the distilling process into the bottle. Here you will taste strong agave and a touch of alcohol nose that makes up exactly what the distiller was going for at production. The Reposado (meaning rested) is tinted slightly gold in color, which come from the raw tequila soaking 22

Food for Thought in white oak barrels for at least two months and up to a year. Even with this short aging process, the reposado tequila will soften and smooth out the alcohol nose making this category a perfect match for a margarita or a shot.

With more than a year of barrel aging, the Anejo category of tequila is more like a good whiskey with deep characteristics of vanilla and floral notes. This is when you might be inclined to pour a small amount over ice and sip slowly with a good hunting dog at your feet.

Fortunately for consumers, there is no better or worse category of tequila. One is not better than the other. Unlike scotch or bourbon where years do matter, tequila is vastly different in that the application of the spirit determines the category. Blanco, Reposado or Anejo, are all good choices as long as it’s 100% agave.

This Worm is Not for Fishing There is a national myth out there that needs to be clarified. According to Mexican law, legitimate tequila will never have a bloated drunken worm laying silently at the bottom of a bottle.

This high-octane worm is the larvae of a maguey moth known locally as the gusano de maguey. He starts his life on the agave plant and feeds exclusively off the plant in both the agricul-

tural and wild settings. Only a few of the lucky ones make their way to the bottom of a mezcal bottle and find their final destiny at some random college frat party.

There are so many rumors as to why the worm is placed in the bottle. Some say there is “great luck” to those who get to shoot the very last of the bottle to include the worm. I beg to differ. Others say it’s a sign of respect to the culture and farmers of Mexico in which you are toasting to the ancestors of long ago. And yet some say it is a simple marketing ploy to promote the mezcal variant.

As mentioned, mezcal is produced from the agave plant, but unlike tequila, it can be made from any one or more of the 39 species of agave.

Mezcal is not for the faint of heart as it usually comes in a higher proof, landing somewhere around 90-100.

Furthermore, there are no restrictions on where it can be farmed, produced and bottled.

However, the most interesting difference between the two liquor siblings is how the hearts of the agave plant are processed before distillation.

Tequila is made from steaming the pieces of the blue agave heart in an above ground oven before distilling in copper pots. This produces a clean, lean, agave forward, powerful liquor.

Mezcal is different in the way the hearts are prepared for distillation. The hearts in mezcal are toasted and partially cooked underground with ovens made of charred rocks before entering clay pots for distillation. This is what gives mezcal that unique smoky depth and remarkable gold color that consumers love (or not so much). To each his own.

With or without salt That is the question. There is nothing better on a summer (Lake Wylie) day when you are relaxing at your favorite spot sipping on a quality margarita. Whether you like it frozen, on the rocks, with or without salt, it’s up to you. There is no “real” way a margarita must be made. However, our local restaurants offer a few samples of the finest margaritas made.

So, get out there and visit our local expert bartenders and try one of their margarita masterpieces. Just remember to ask for premium 100% blue agave tequila or try exchanging tequila for a smoky mezcal. But never, and I mean not ever, take a shot with the worm unless you are fully prepared for the consequences.

Fueling Your Workout

onsistent exercise is one of the cornerstones of a healthy lifestyle. But paying attention to what you eat before and after you work out is crucial if you’re looking to exercise effectively and safely.

With conflicting information about preand post-workout routines, it’s important to cut through the confusion and ask the nutrition experts. We spoke to Jennifer Lowrie, RDN, CSSD, LDN, CDE, a board certified specialist in sports dietetics at Atrium Health, to get information and tips about fueling your workout with the right food at the right time.

Avoid an empty stomach “Food equals energy,” reminds Lowrie. If you start your workout on an empty stomach, you run the risk of not having adequate energy to exercise at a high level. When your muscles are not well fueled and well hydrated, your endurance and strength could decrease and risk of injury increases. In short, working out while hungry is not recommended.

or years we’ve enjoyed our decks and patios for backyard barbecues, sunbathing, and relaxing outdoors. But in the past decade or so, outdoor living spaces have evolved into an extension of living space, with everything from outdoor fireplaces to television entertainment areas to kitchens, where we can enjoy all of our favorite activities.

Enhancing outdoor living space has been a big trend in home improvement and custom new construction in recent years, and Lake Wylie residents take advantage of our beautiful surroundings to make the most of the outdoors. While some elaborate outdoor set-ups have been found in only high-end luxury homes, emerging products at various price ranges make it possible for more people to incorporate these features into their own landscapes.

Outdoor cooking has expanded beyond a simple grill, with full kitchens including built-in grills and smokers, sinks, refrigerators, and storage for cooking utensils. Particularly when sheltered under a covered porch, cooking and entertaining “al fresco” can be enjoyed all year round.

Appliances such as television, wireless sound systems, and lamps, specifically designed to withstand moisture and temperature changes that occur outside, make it easy to entice family and friends into the great outdoors. Adding in some of the new styles of patio furniture, plenty of ceiling fans and a fire table complete the living room feel.

Builder Scott Swanson, with Six King Custom Homes, said, “Today’s client wants to enjoy the outdoors by easily opening up their home without letting the elements come inside.” He said one of the trends he has seen over the past few years is their new home clients upgrading from simple outdoor deck space to nicely finished covered porches.

“Our clients want stained wooden ceilings on the porches, low maintenance flooring options, and aluminum framed screening systems,” said Swanson.

Barry Gant, of Lake Wylie’s Gant Design and Build, specializes in creating outdoor living spaces for his clients. Most of his projects are renovations, where homeowners are adding outdoor living to their landscapes.

Gant said that the first priority is creating a defined space, either a patio, porch or deck with a covering. “Most people can’t afford a full-on build with everything they’d like to have, so they start in staged phases,” he said.

Some sort of cover is important to keep the 30

area dry and protect from the heat of the sun.

Innovative designs — such as operable pergolas — provide homeowners with flexibility when creating shade.

“These pergolas have slats that open and close with a touch of a button, and are great for people who want shade and protection from rain but aren’t ready to give up the sunshine or the natural light indoors,” Gant said.

“We had one client who wanted a screened porch. During our conversation, the client told us they host a big family dinner every Sunday, with 30-40 people! The original plan didn’t contemplate a group that large. Not until we dig into how a family is going to use the space do we see what is truly needed.”

Garden Party Gant said that many of his clients are interested in adding fireplaces, firepits and outdoor cooking centers. “These are for homes of all sizes and price points,” he said. “Everybody wants outdoor living space in one form or another.” Gant works with people with all budget levels to provide good value and the right sized project for their needs.

Local builder Shannon Miller of Miller Homes and Construction said outdoor features are included in nearly every home he builds. “The most popular request is a cov-

ered porch, which is now considered as another room in the home,” Miller said. “Most clients are asking for fireplaces, either a true wood burning masonry fireplace, or prefabricated gas log fireplaces that are specially designed to accept the exterior elements.”

“Low maintenance is always a priority,” Gant said. “We use a lot of composite materials and stone. That trend is across all building projects these days.”

Williams Realty, sells quite a few homes with enhanced outdoor living spaces. “They definitely add a ‘Wow!’ factor,” he said. “These enhancements complement the lake lifestyle, entertaining and enjoying the outdoors.”

Choate said that while few buyers specify outdoor living features on their “must have” list when looking at properties, a home with nice landscaping and extras outside often wins the buying decision over a home with more simple features.

“As the buyers move up in price point, particularly in homes approaching and above

the million- dollar price tag, outdoor features do become more expected,” Choate added.

“The actual cost of the outdoor features isn’t always realized in the purchase price, though,” Choate cautioned. “Appraisers don’t usually calculate full dollar value for things like outdoor fireplaces and kitchens. A seller that has added these things in a renovation may not recoup the full investment when they sell. When considering these types of additions, it should be more of a lifestyle and personal enjoyment decision. If you really enjoy being outdoors, then it is worth the investment.” LW

A Man of the People Peeler takes on historic role as first president of S.C. Senate

ne day, Sen. Harvey Peeler will be in South Carolina’s history books, but not for his iconic Jersey cow that draws cheers at parades in the enormous district he serves. When the state’s 2019 legislative session opened on Jan. 8, the long-serving Gaffney Republican was elected by his peers as the upper chamber’s first ever president.

The newly created title replaced the president pro tempore leadership position that was the most powerful post in the S.C. Senate for the past century. That change followed a voter-approved ballot measure to place candidates for governor and Lt. governor on the same ticket. Previously, they were elected separately and the Lt. governor served a dual role as presiding officer of the Senate.

Beginning with the 2019 session, it’s the Senate’s president who steers the agenda and controls influential appointments, among other powers. That the inaugural senator to serve in that role is Peeler comes as no surprise to his peers and constituents. With nearly 40 years of Senate experience, a long record of constituent service and respect from both sides of the aisle, Peeler (R-Dist. 14) seemed a natural choice.

“He’s the consummate public servant,” said Sen. Wes Climer (R-Dist. 15), whose own constituency includes Lake Wylie’s River Hills community.

Peeler, a dairyman who has been in the business since he was a youngster and the senate’s majority leader since 2005, “has always been incredibly responsive to people across his district,” according to Climer, who points out that Peeler was elected Senate president in a unanimous vote.

“He takes the time to listen, and he’s an ‘all politics is local’ kind of legislator. That’s just how he operates,” Climer said.

Among his peers, Peeler, a graduate of Clemson University and a U.S. Army veteran, is all about consensus.

Climer, who emphasizes the historic nature of this year’s legislative session, said no other senator checks all the boxes the way Peeler does.

“He’s the first president of the Senate, which means everything he does in this role is precedent-setting for all the presidents who come after him, and it is one of the testaments to his character and the way he conducts himself that he was chosen,” Climer said.

Senate Minority Leader Nikki Setzler (D-Dist. 26) couldn’t be any more enthusiastic in his praise for his colleague.

choice. I seconded his nomination on the floor of the senate and I was honored to do so,” Setzler said.

“I think Senator Peeler is, first of all, a leader; second, he’s a listener; and third, he’s bipartisan and inclusive in what he does. I think he also has a great understanding of history and tradition and the customs of the South Carolina Senate.”

With a diverse and vast constituency that stretches from the Upstate down to Western York County, Peeler managed to create the secret sauce that allows him to meet the needs of tens of thousands of residents. That’s no secret to many in Lake Wylie, a fast-growing suburb and Charlotte bedroom community whose profile has been rising with its population.

The head count in Lake Wylie has grown from nearly 9,000 in 2010 to more than 12,000 now — and still counting.

One of two S.C. gateways for travelers heading south from Charlotte, Lake Wylie, which is unincorporated and in the jurisdiction of York County, is the first impression many get entering the state. That’s why boosters wanted a visitor center to help market the area and boost tourism.

Peeler was instrumental in helping the Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce open and maintain the visitor center that is now a source of community pride. Unlike towns and cities that rely on their own municipalities to meet residents’ needs, communities like Lake Wylie need to lean more on their county, state and sometimes federal level elected officials.

“Lake Wylie and the Lake Wylie Chamber are in a unique situation due to being an unincorporated community on a lake with immense growth,” Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce President Susan Bromfield said.

“This situation is why our elected officials and state leaders and Senator Peeler have been so important and appreciated. Lake Wylie — the lake is bi-state, Hwy. 49, Hwy. 557, Hwy. 274, etc., are state highways; Buster Boyd Bridge is 90 percent federal funding and 5 percent each North Carolina and South Carolina, and many more issues and circumstances with state leadership involved. A lot has gone on and a lot has changed during the past 30 years in Lake Wylie.”

To Lake Wylie Chamber Chairman Charles Wood, who has known and worked with Peeler for about 20 years, that help not only showed a commitment to his community, but to statewide fiscal responsibility.

“It’s a gateway to South Carolina and an important place to have a visitor center, and Harvey Peeler saw it was a good need,” Wood said. “We want to raise our profile, encourage

With Peeler’s help, the chamber was able to build it and the state kicks in a modest annual grant to help offset operating expenses. But it’s a drop in the bucket compared to what the

state would have to spend if it ran the center itself.

“I’d say he’s saving the state about $1 million a year by having the chamber operate the visitor center,” Wood said.

ing gain approval for a project to replace the nearly century-old Buster Boyd Bridge. Commuter traffic to and from Charlotte was causing big city-like traffic jams, impacting quality of life in the area. The new bridge provided four lanes — two in each direction — and was five feet higher than the original to better accommodate boats passing underneath. It now handles about 40,000 vehicles a day.

“The fact that Harvey has been able to do so much is testament to his ability to build consensus,” Climer said.

As Lake Wylie grows, civic leaders like Bromfield give credit to Peeler for always being there when needed most.

“Senator Peeler knows the district, the needs, and has an excellent relationship with the Lake Wylie Chamber and many others in this area,” she said. “He has been responsive to those needs for over three decades. hings are looking quite spiffy at the River Hills Country Club these days.

Since last spring, worn wood siding on the clubhouse has been replaced with attractive, low-maintenance hardi-board, new decks and railings have been installed, and landscaping has been perked up and updated around the tennis courts and buildings.

Inside, the look has been polished with new paint, new furniture, new carpet, new artwork and other updates. Club manager Paul Notine said, “We’re in the midst of a five-year plan to renovate the whole place.

The amount of work that has been done is very exciting.”

Across the nation, country clubs have been experiencing challenges, according to the Club Management Association of America (CMAA). Golf was the dominant force driving country club memberships for the past 70 years or so, but the number of people playing golf, and the frequency that they play, has been declining in recent years.

Notine joined RHCC about four years ago, when the club was struggling financially and there were issues to be addressed across the board. “The clubhouse was built in 1972, and was in need of repairs and updates,” said Notine. “We had growth in the Spring 2019 | www.LakeWylieToday.com

The golf course at RHCC was completely revamped in 2012, and the addition of summer camps and year-round Junior clinics were in place to cultivate a new generation of golfers. However, like many country clubs in the U.S., RHCC had to look beyond the greens to develop more programs targeted to families and non-golfers.

“We started changing up a few things to make the club more inclusive,” said Notine.

“We want people to see it as a social hub.”

A brand-new family pool was installed before in time for the summer season last year. “It has a ‘zero entry,’ which is a gradual slope that allows people to walk into the pool without stairs. It’s great for older people and young kids,” explained Notine.

“We also have our competition lap pool, for the swim team and exercise,” Notine said.

The River Hills Sharks swim team had 150 members in 2018, the largest participation to date. “We had a swim meet here with the Tega Cay team, and almost 1,000 people showed up! It was like the Super Bowl of swim meets.”

Family friendly events, such as the Memorial Day cookout, sports camp and barbecues, provide fun opportunities for kids and their parents to play and mingle.

“We have a full entertainment calendar for the membership, with an involved social committee that has something planned every day,” Notine said. The club even offers babysitting on Friday nights, giving parents of young ones time to socialize or have date nights.

“We also have regular wine dinners, featuring multicourse dinners with a wine guide pairing selections with the food,” Notine described. “Those dinners are always a sell-out.”

The club has had great success in the past couple of years with Friday night “Happy Hours,” live music at least once a month, regular “Prime Rib” nights, Sunday buffet with waffle and omelet stations, and special dining events on holidays such as Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, and Cinco de Mayo.

New membership programs have been successful in bringing in additional people to RHCC’s roster and have funded improvements and renovations for the club.

“We created a two-year trial membership for new residents moving into River Hills, plus special memberships for existing residents, Notine said. “We’ve added about 250 families to the roster in the past couple of years and have sold several lifetime mem48

berships. We’re starting to turn a profit for the first time in five years.”

Each new resident in River Hills is invited to join the club for a discounted rate.

“When you make a move, you’re generally dealing with renovations, unpacking, that sort of thing, and you think the last thing you have time to do is play tennis or golf,” Notine said. “So we have trial memberships for new residents to help them get acclimated socially. After all, they moved here for a reason, for the lifestyle, so we give them an incentive to go ahead and get started.”

The club does allow members from outside of River Hills, and Notine said that is where a lot of the club’s growth is being generated.

Several different membership types appeal to different interests, he said.

“We have a social membership, which includes dining plus access to the pool and fitness center, plus a couple of rounds of golf a month. We have simple pool memberships, with access to the snack bar, and of course full memberships for those who want everything.”

What’s yet to come?

“We’re figuring out what our maximum membership level is, capping it, and building a strong reserve for upgrading facilities.

We’re planning and managing growth,” said Notine. “The area around us is growing, and we want to be part of that.” LW

hey’re showing up everywhere. Pharmacies. Grocery stores. Specialty shops with logos that you didn’t even think were legal. All of a sudden, it seems, hemp and CBD products are popping up all over the Carolinas.

So what’s the buzz? And do they give you a buzz?

CBD — or cannabidiol — is a non-psychoactive compound from cannabis plants. CBD oil is extracted from hemp plants and may be useful for treating health issues including anxiety, pain, depression, acne, insomnia, heart disease, seizures and other maladies. It may ease inflammation and provide antioxidants, promoting overall wellbeing. Research is ongoing, but studies suggest that CBD products are considered safe and powerful natural treatments for many health conditions.

Many people relate the cannabis plant with marijuana, but in truth there are several varieties of cannabis. The two most abundant 52

components in cannabis are THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and CBD. THC is the element that contains a psychoactive component, producing the “high” associated with marijuana, explained Larry Meek, pharmacist and owner of Lake Wylie Pharmacy.

“The legal form of CBD comes from industrial hemp, which is tested by law and contains less than 0.3% THC. Even at very strong doses, CBD will not produce a “high.”

Hemp is one of the world’s oldest crops, with evidence dating back to use by civilizations more than 10,000 years ago. It was grown extensively in the U.S. until the Controlled Substance Act of 1970 established a list of banned drugs, grouping hemp with marijuana as a drug, even though it didn’t contain the same properties.

In 1998, businesses were allowed to import hemp from other countries, but it wasn’t until 2014 that the Agricultural Act (Farm Bill) defined industrial hemp as distinct and

opened the doors for states to legalize cultivation. In 2016, hemp products became legal to sell in South Carolina, and a limited number of permitted farmers can grow the crop commercially.

Meek, who had been following news about the benefits and legalization of CBD, did extensive research and due diligence before adding a professional line of CBD products to his store’s inventory in June, 2018.

“I looked at quite a few brands. The FDA tested a variety of CBD products and found that about 90% of them did not have the ingredients that were claimed. Some contain only a trace of CBD.” “Many cheaply priced products, widely available on the internet, are coming from overseas, and are from questionable sources.

So it is important to purchase from a reputable dealer, because there is a lot of junk out there,” he cautioned. “Make sure your product has a Certificate of Analysis.”

Lake Wylie Pharmacy carries CBD products from Ananda, which is a true “farm to pharmacy” company, said Meek. “We carry oil, capsules, and a topical CBD salve, all which have less than 0.3% THC. We also carry THC free-oil.”

Meek said many of his customers are concerned with the marijuana relationship and ask if they will fail a drug test if using CBD oil.

“Even the tiny amount of THC in CBD oil is enough to trigger a positive test, which is why Ananda makes the THC-free oil. That’s a good option for customers who are routinely tested,” explained Meek.

T

his year, the Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce honored Don Long with a first-ever Legacy Award for his dedication and contributions to the Lake Wylie Community. A Lions Club and Lake Wylie Chamber of Commerce member for nearly 29 years and a long-time activist in civic and church affairs, his list of accomplishments run from one end of the community to the other.

Years ago, after the the chamber received a piece of mail that said, “Would you like to have trees and beautification in your community?” he worked to help write a federal grant known as the Lake Wylie Gateway/ Bike Path. Those beautification efforts included the Lake Wylie entrance signage at T-Bones; the trees, landscaping and flagpoles that line Highway 49 from the Buster Boyd Bridge to Highway 274; and entrances into the Lake Wylie Gateway.

He worked with the county and area businesses to develop the Lake Wylie Overlay Ordinance that gave guidance for future growth, with tools for the county for guiding signage, landscaping and the overall look of the Highway 49 Gateway. He then became chairperson for the Adopt A Highway 49 program for Lake Wylie. He also helped de-

He is currently a member of the chamber’s board of directors and is a trustee for Winthrop University. He has served several board positions, including president of River Hills Community Association, River Hills Country Club and Lake Wylie Civic Association.

And he has kept a close eye on the Carolina Water Service for over two decades, unafraid to testify and speak at public hearings.

He has been a River Hills Community Church board trustee and served on the church’s foresight and long-range planning committees and helped oversee the construction of the Family Life Center. He also served on the chamber’s long-range planning committee. His vision included the chamber ultimately having its own building, complete with a visitor and small business center, which opened in 2007.

After retiring to Lake Wylie from a long career with IBM, he has devoted nearly three decades of his life to making a difference in the Lake Wylie community. If there’s a cause worth working for, count on Don Long to be there.

On the personal side of life, he is married to Peggy Upchurch. He has two daughters, Karen and JoAnn, and six grandchildren. LW

Hearing Health: Protect Yourself from the Noise

B

etween the noise at work, noise outside (traffic, leaf blowers, mowers), noise inside (restaurants, gym, concerts, sporting event) and the noise we subject ourselves to voluntarily (earbuds), finding peace and quiet can seem like a challenge.

All that noise is a big reason why hearing loss has nearly doubled so far this century, according to the American Academy of Audiology.

Approximately 12 percent of the U.S. population — 38 million Americans — have a significant hearing loss.

Our hearing plays a major role in our quality of life, from our emotional well-being and physical health to our careers and leisure activities, so it is best to protect what you have and know what your hearing level is now.

To protect yourself from noise:

• If the sound level at work exceeds 85 decibels, reduce the noise level or wear hearing protection.

• Lower the volume of your television, stereo and iPod. Take special care if you use headphones or earbuds.

• Be careful not to turn up your car stereo volume too loudly to compensate for noise from the engine or the wind.

• Wear custom noise filters or solid earplugs if you go to rock concerts or nightclubs, and don’t stand near loud speakers. (There is a reason many performing artists wear hearing aids now.)

• Wear noise-cancelling headphones or solid earplugs if you use noisy equipment such as drills, lawnmowers, leaf blowers, etc.

To avoid damage from foreign objects: Don’t use cotton swabs to clean your ears.

Doing so may push wax down onto your eardrum and can increase the production of wax and/or damage the eardrum.

So, protect your hearing! You will want to hear for all of your life.

Setting Boundaries Can Lead to a Healthier You

D

o you have a difficult time saying no?

Or saying yes only to feel guilty later?

What about putting your priorities on the back burner while saying yes to others in your life? That tiny two-letter word “No” can be one of the hardest words to utter or text, especially if you are a people pleaser.

Setting personal boundaries is not a selfish act. In fact, it can lead to a healthier version of yourself. Boundaries can allow you to be more productive and have peace in your life. However, it can take practice for those feelings of judgment or being disliked because you’ve said no to fade.

Think of it like learning to ride a bike. It isn’t very pretty at first. You may fall and scrape your knee, crash into a tree or a person, and you may want to stop trying.

Learning the skill of setting boundaries can feel ugly at first too. You might say no when you could have said yes, you might sound “rude and uncaring” when just softening your tone would have made it so much better. You might decide that learning the skills of setting boundaries is too difficult. But don’t give up! Just like riding a bike, as you practice setting boundaries it becomes more natural, and you become more graceful at setting boundaries as you learn.

What areas do you need to say no or set some boundaries? Friendships? Family? Work?

Church? Kid’s school? Yourself? As awesome as you are, you can’t do everything! So, learning what is important to you can help you decide where to say no or to set boundaries. Know your worth. Your opinion of yourself is more important than if someone is upset with you because you could not or would not do something they are requesting. You are valuable and important no matter other’s opinions.

How do you set a boundary or say no in real life? Here are a few examples.

Setting a boundary with your mom: “I understand that having socks on the baby is important to you, mom, but if you don’t mind, I would appreciate you respecting my judgment in this matter.”

Saying no to the room mom at school: “Thank you for including me, however, I have other commitments for that day.”

Leveling Out Tight inventory, rising prices highlight 2018

T

he yearly numbers are in for 2018 for the Lake Wylie/Steele Creek real estate market. The Carolina Realtors Association compiles data from the Carolina Multiple Listing Services to get a portrait of the local market and provide us with data to analyze for our readers interested in real estate. This is what they show.

Charlotte region When you start digging into the numbers, sales were down 14% from December 2017.

Prices were up slightly, with the average sales price up 1.1% to $282,894. Inventory was 66

down yet again from a 2.3-month supply to a 2.2-month supply, a decline of 550 homes.

This leaves sellers again in the best position in real estate deals with a balanced market considered to be a 4-to-6-month supply of inventory. Pending sales were dead even and new listings were down 4.4% from this time last year.

In the Steele Creek area (ZIP codes 28278 and 28273), the market is externally tight, with1,325 homes sold compared to around 2,000 in 2017. Currently there were only 15 homes priced under $300,000 in the entire 28273 area. Most sell within 10 days of enter-

ing the market and the overwhelming majority of those were priced under $350,000.

York, Clover and Lake Wylie A similar pattern continues for ZIP codes 29710 and 29745 in the South Carolina market. Sales were down from a high mark of 1,300 in 2017 to 1,135 in 2018, with the majority of those 848 priced under $350,000.

Current active inventory is 221 homes.

When you look just at Lake Wylie non-waterfront, resale homes, the story is a little bit different. Closed sales were indeed down 15.3% year-over-year from 98 to 83. Due to

Average price was up year-over-year to $409,539, an increase of 16.2%. Inventory was dead even from last year in terms of months of supply at 3.3, but remember about that extreme note from earlier – there were actually 26 more homes on the market.

This means that sellers are still in a slightly better position in the Lake Wylie area. New listings are on the rise in the area with many new construction projects helping to boost the supply. Homes spent longer on the market in 2018 with days on market up 102% from 51 to 103, but this probably reflects new construction homes, which typically stay on the market substantially longer than existing homes.

In River Hills, there is an extreme shortage of homes on the market – the lowest in recent memory. Fifty-two homes closed last year with currently only nine on the market. New homes accounted for an amazing 245 sales, with strong sales in the Paddlers Cove Community.

Waterfront Market Update Median prices continue to rise in the waterfront market due to low inventory and high demand, as of this writing there were just 91 active listings in both Carolinas, down from the 120 to 140 we experienced over the last decade. The median asking price is $839,000

which is an increase of over $100,000 from last year, with only five priced below $600,000.

The $1 million-plus market was very active with 11 closings in 2018 and 14 currently on the market. Both numbers are about the same as 2017. A total of about 120 legitimately waterfront homes sold, down from about 160 from the year before due to a shortage in inventory. The median price is pushing close to $725,000, up from the low $600,000s, a number that stayed steady for some time.

Tips For Buyers And Sellers In this unusual housing market, it is still important to discuss home staging, photography, drone shots, brochures, marketing, Web presence and, most of all, pricing strategy.

Here are a few tips to guide the process.

The real estate transaction is a complicated and emotional process. Contracts and addendums are extensive, sometimes reaching 20 to

30 pages. Make sure you review all the documents prior to listing or purchasing a property so there will be no surprises when time comes to make or negotiate an offer.

Understand the hard deadlines for loans to be approved, inspections to take place and negotiations on any repairs. Speaking of repairs, this is the biggest deal-killer of them all. Inspectors are paid to find out everything that is not perfect with the property, and those findings offend most all sellers.

The best tip of all is always hire an experienced professional agent, not a friend of a friend who just got licensed or the former barber or hair stylist. Transactional experience is key to a successful and happy purchase or sale.

Southern Twang

What makes the South … Southern?

I

imagine myself as a contestant on “Family Feud,” the everlasting game show where two families compete to identify most popular responses to survey questions. The show host reads the clue, “Southern __________.”

“Charm!” I answer. Ding! (25 points for that one).

Yep, Southern Charm is used to describe many things, from a wrap-around porch to the chivalry of a Southern Gentleman (5 points), wearing a seersucker suit, no doubt.

Towns with Southern Charm are touted for their friendliness, their garden tours, and their Main Streets with general stores and ice cream parlors and lots of Southern Hospitality (10 points!). People look you in the eye and smile as you pass them on the streets and give a little wave as they’re driving by.

Southern Charm is about gentle kindness, and manners. When I was growing up, “yes” and “no” were not single syllable words. We said “yes-ma’am” and “no-ma’am,” otherwise Mama would sternly reply, “Yes what?” Yes ma’am, that’s how it was.

Then there’s Southern Cookin’! Ding! (15 points for that one).

Closely related, Southern Fried! ‘Cuz let’s face it. True Southern Cookin’ doesn’t get too far without lard in sight. Fried chicken, fried okra, fried catfish, and fried apple pies. Scottish immigrants in Colonial times brought their deep-fried traditions to the deep South, and we ain’t never looked back. We’ve been eating high on the hawg ever since.

As for other Southern staples like collard greens, sweet tea, biscuits, butter beans and home-grown tomatoes, well, those things just taste really good with fried stuff.

As for Southern Cuisine? Eh’nt! Wrong answer, darlin’. Bless your heart.

How about Southern Accent? Ding! (20 points).

We have our own vocabulary, our own pronunciations (Southern Twang – 10 points!), but most of all, we just talk slower. That doesn’t mean we think slower, by the way. We’re just not in an all-fire hurry to communicate.

The origin of that habit? I can’t be sure, but I think it might be the heat. It’s just too darn hot in the South to be in a hurry to do anything.

If you’re new to the South and want to lose some of your fast-talking ways, take a deep breath. Start by waiting for the other person to finish talking before you start. (And if that person is Southern, it might take awhile.)

Throw in a “y’all” if you’re speaking about a group, or an “all y’all” if you want to be particularly inclusive.

Don’t just do something. Be “fixin’ to” do something first. Why rush in?

Don’t throw a tantrum when you can flat out “pitch a hissy fit.” And why simply agree that something is acceptable when you can “reckon that’s okay”?

Once you’re comfortable with the basics, you can start slidin’ in some Southern sayings to your dialect, like “Well, I s’wanee.” That’s “finer than frog’s hair.” It’s “gonna be on like a pot of chicken necks.” Lawsa mercy, before you know it you’ll be hanging in there like a hair in a biscuit.

Remember that simple contentment isn’t enough when you can be “happy as a pig in mud,” or “happy as a tick on a dawg.” Because, my friend, you’re livin’ in the South, and ain’t nuthin’ finer than a day in Carolina! LW
