Dear Readers, GSA Business welcomes you to our first Giving Guide, a handbook of philanthropic opportunities. The people and companies of the Upstate are a generous group, as you will read here. They give of their time and their money.

They raise money and advocate for the causes they believe in.

To expand their reach, nonprofits are collaborating on projects to make the best use of their resources. A shining example is Born Learning S.C., a project of the seven United Ways of the Upstate to help children enter school ready to learn. There are many others, and you can learn about them here.

About 30 years ago, the Spartanburg County Foundation began a project to measure the outcomes when nonprofits contribute time and money. Other nonprofits also have taken up this practice, and you can learn a lot by looking at measurable results. Read about it in these pages.

We hope that after reading this guide you’ll be as inspired as we were by learning about volunteer efforts to help veterans, young children and low-income adults.

A special congratulations to all the award winners in this issue: To Mary L. Thomas of the Spartanburg County Foundation, a finalist for a major national award.

AWARD WINNERS

Spartanburg’s Mary L. Thomas Barnet, Swinney win awards from AFP honored at national level

Mary L. Thomas turns awards she wins into new ways to help others. That’s the kind of person she is.

When she won the prestigious Robert W. Scrivner Award from the Council on Foundations, a worldwide o rg a n i z a t i o n , Thomas, now chief operating officer of the Spartanburg County Foundation, used her $10,000 prize Mary L. Thomas to start a similar Finalist for the Council on Foundations' award program Distinguished Service Award in Spartanburg.

This year, Thomas has been chosen one of three finalists for the Council on Foundations’ Distinguished Service Award, the highest national honor for philanthropic work. Although she was not chosen as the ultimate winner of the award, the Spartanburg County Foundation could not be prouder of her, said Troy Hanna, the foundation’s president and CEO.

“Mary has always set a standard of excellence in everything she does, and we are delighted to see her passion and commitment being honored on the national stage,” Hanna said.

When Thomas won the Scrivner Award in 2006, she was honored for her imagination, creativity and optimism, hallmarks of Scrivner’s career as the first executive director of the Rockefeller Family Fund in New York. With the award came the prize Thomas used as seed money for the Mary L. Thomas Award for Civic Leadership and Community Change Fund.

At the time, she said, “I hope that Spartanburg will help me turn $10,000 to $100,000.”

Through generous donor support, the fund has exceeded that goal.

Starting in 2007, the Mary L. Thomas Award for Civic Leadership and Community Change has been given to a Spartanburg County resident who has served the community without receiving much recognition.

Thomas herself has more than 25 years’ experience in the nonprofit sector. Before joining the foundation in 1998, she was executive director of the Bethlehem Community Center, an inner-city ministry that serves women and children in Spartanburg.

Don't take it personally!

“Don’t take it personally!” Have you ever heard this statement or even had it directed toward you? Typically, it is said in the context of business, sports, or relationships.

I do not usually take things personally, but I certainly do in one context: community philanthropy.

When I know that people are homeless and hungry in the Upstate, I take that personally.

Troy Hanna When I know President, that people are The Spartanburg County Foundation under-educated and unable to obtain jobs, I take that personally. Philanthropies in the Upstate are addressing these needs and allowing us all to be involved in the solutions.

In particular, this year marks an exciting time for philanthropies known as community foundations in the United States. We celebrate the 100th anniversary of community foundations in Cleveland, Ohio, the home to the country’s first community foundation.

Community foundations are independent, public charities that steward philanthropic

resources from institutional and individual donors to community-based organizations.

Further, community foundations strengthen communities by enabling people to create charitable funds that address a wide range of interests.

The Spartanburg County Foundation is the oldest community foundation in South Carolina. Established in 1943, The Spartanburg County Foundation is committed to improving the lives of Spartanburg County residents by promoting philanthropy, encouraging community engagement, and responding to community needs. We take it personally! Currently, the Foundation manages a portfolio of more than 900 charitable funds with assets in excess of $145 million. Since inception, the Foundation and its donors have given more than $119 million in grants for advancement of education, arts and culture, historic preservation, health, social services, recreation and youth activities.

Recently, Daniel Shoy Jr., president of the East Lake Foundation, spoke at our 11th Grassroots Leadership Development Institute graduation ceremony. He explained that if one is active in improving his or her community, regardless of the capacity, that person is a philanthropist. As we celebrate this 100th year, I encourage people to embrace philanthropy in their community and to take leadership roles to bring change and improvement.

Two Upstate residents are being honored as National Philanthropy Day award winners by the Association of Fundraising Professionals SC, Piedmont chapter. William “Bill” Barnet III has been chosen Philanthropist of the Year, and Kathleen Swinney has been selected as Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year.

Barnet was nominated by Mobile Meals of Spartanburg and Swinney was nominated by Brian O’Rourke, executive director of development and alumni affairs, Clemson University; Erik Whaley, vice president of the St. Francis Hospital Foundation; and Rich and Kelly Davies, vice chairs of the Will to Lead Campaign for Clemson.

The award winners will be honored at a luncheon Nov. 13. Information is at afpscpiedmont. afpnet.org.

Barnet, the Philanthropist of the Year, has helped Mobile Meals of Spartanburg provide meal services to frail and homebound residents

through his support as a major donor and as co-chairman of the Mobile Meals Council of Friends. Barnet, a former Spartanburg mayor, is also involved in the Northside Project, a collaboration to improve all aspects of life in an area of the city with high unemployment, poverty and crime and little access to needed services.

“Regardless of the area, being elementary school to homebound seniors who are too frail to cook a meal — he is involved,” his nominator wrote. “He is a change agent, a leader and a notable philanthropist.”

Volunteer Fundraiser of the Year Kathleen Swinney and her husband, Clemson football coach Dabo Swinney, started the All-In Foundation. The foundation raises funds for breast cancer research, The Family Effect, Call Me MISTER, the Clemson LIFE and Alabama RISE programs and other private grants. Swinney serves as vice chair of the foundation’s board of directors and she has helped devise community events to raise more than $800,000.

“Her presence and stance on improving education and health in the Upstate serve to motivate others to take action to better the lives of those in need,” her nominators wrote. Last year Swinney solicited sponsorships to partner with Clemson and the All-In Foundation to create Clemson’s first Breast Cancer Awareness football game.

United Ways and the power of collaboration It doesn’t matter if you live in Greenville, Spartanburg, Anderson or any of the other great cities and towns across the Upstate, we share a common hope that our communities will be places where all people have the opportunity to lead safe, stable and successful lives.

At United Way of Greenville County, we’re working toward this vision by building what we call a Ted Hendry “Cycle of SucPresident, cess.”

United Way of Greenville County We believe by focusing on three priority issues — school readiness, high school graduation, and financial stability — we can eliminate the barriers to success that affect so many, and instead, create a Cycle of Success, where children start school prepared to learn and go on to graduate, well-educated graduates find good jobs and create stable homes, and children from stable homes continue the cycle.

Thanks to the generous support of our community, last year United Way of Greenville

County programs and initiatives helped more than 100,000 people begin building that cycle in their lives.

Collaboration will always be a central tenet of this work. We can accomplish so much more when we bring together a diverse group working toward common goals.

Two great examples of the impact this collaborative spirit can make are the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Collaborative and Born Learning Upstate SC. The VITA Collaborative brings together hundreds of volunteers from United Ways across the Upstate to provide free tax preparation to low and middle income families. Sharing resources and knowledge across the collaborative, this program saved taxpayers more than $1.3 million in preparation fees last year and returned $9.1 million in tax refunds.

Last year, seven United Ways serving 10 Upstate counties joined to form Born Learning Upstate SC, launching a regional public engagement campaign to help parents and caregivers provide young children with quality learning opportunities.

More collaboration Here are other ways that the Spartanburg County Foundation collaborates with community groups to provide leadership and services: Grassroots Leadership Development Institute: The institute is an intensive seven-month leadership training program to equip individuals to lead change at the grass-roots level.

The institute was developed in 2004 and since then, more than 200 people from diverse cultures and backgrounds have graduated. The skills taught focus on assuming responsibility for positive change, using basic leadership skills, organizing people, making an effective plan, leveraging com-

When nonprofits combine expertise and resources, it’s amazing what can happen. As an example, look no further than Born Learning Upstate SC, a collaboration of the seven United Ways of the Upstate.

The group of United Ways, which represent 10 Upstate counties, had been looking for a project to work on together around a common goal, said Mike Posey, vice president of marketing and communications for the United Way of Greenville County.

“We settled on the importance of making sure children are ready to start school,” Posey said. Born Learning is based on a national model developed by United Way Worldwide and the Civitas Foundation. It doesn’t require fancy equipment or software. It shows parents how everyday tasks can become learning opportunities for small children.

Representatives from the seven United Ways began meeting at Ten at the Top, an organization that leads conversations and task force efforts to address regional issues. “We had known each other, but we were all in our own bubble,” Posey said.

“We were focused on our own communities — we were supposed to do that.”

But Ten at the Top encouraged them to look at the bigger picture and the aspects they share: the same media market, for example. All 10 counties had programs to promote preschool learning, and the Born Learning project was a natural.

munity assets and increasing communication. Graduates can join the alumni association, also active in the community.

Nonprofit Connect: This series of knowledge sharing sessions covers topics from capacity building to programming and innovation. Participation is free and lunch is provided. Participants take part in forums to share information, learn about trends and receive information about specific Spartanburg County Foundation activities. Some of the topics in 2014: Write a Winning Proposal, Selecting the Right Talent to Fill Your Vacant Position and Event Planning with Excellence.

Participants in the Grassroots Leadership program have a chance to network and learn from each other as well as receiving training.

org. It is a resource for caregivers and parents of young children, with suggestions for fun and games, ages and stages, and tools to assess a child’s development. “It helps a parent notice if something is not developing on track,” Posey said.

The website also lists resources and agencies related to early childhood education in each county.

The most visible part of the project is the Born Learning trails, which set up a series of 10 learning activities in areas where children and parents gather. There are more than 20 trails throughout the 10 counties, including along the Swamp Rabbit Trail and in Cleveland Park in Greenville.

The trails support the United Way’s goal to make sure all children starting school are up to speed in five key areas: communication, cognition, physical development, social/emotional development, and self-help skills.

The Born Learning project is about a year old now, and the group wants to keep the momentum going. Building on this success, the United Ways are looking for their next collaboration. It may be expanding the common 211 telephone help line.

Seven counties have already been working together on the VITA Collaborative (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance). VITA addresses another mission, helping families live financially stable lives, Posey said.

The program recruits and trains volunteer tax preparers with an emphasis on lower-income households. Those making less than $51,000 per year can have their taxes prepared and filed

at no charge. The volunteers research and identify deductions and help those who qualify for the earned income tax credit.

Last year, more than 100 volunteers prepared 9,000 tax returns.

Another example of collaboration is happening in Spartanburg County, where grant-making institutions join resources to address issues of common concern such as adolescent pregnancy prevention, access to behavioral health and educational attainment. The Spartanburg County Joint Funders are the Mary Black Foundation, the Spartanburg County Foundation, Spartanburg Regional Foundation and United Way of the Piedmont.

The Joint Funders are supporting the Spartanburg Academic Movement, said Troy Hanna, president and CEO of the Spartanburg County Foundation. SAM is a partnership of schools and colleges, businesses, governments, foundations and faith communities to encourage higher educational attainment. The movement sets achievement targets that can be measured with a long-term goal of increasing the percentage of county residents who hold a bachelor’s degree or higher.

Helping nonprofit leaders learn how to handle the many tasks of running an organization is the goal of the Healthy Organization Institute of the Spartanburg County Foundation.

“Nonprofits in the community need to understand good operation,” Hanna said.

The institute teaches them to improve capacity and effectiveness so that they can be sustainable. The pilot program, launched in January, enrolled 12 nonprofit organizations. •

By Licia Jackson Thank a donor for their gift to your nonprofit, and the good feeling goes away soon. But show the impact of that same gift with data and numbers, and the meaning will be remembered.

Foundations and United Way organizations in the Upstate have fine-tuned their methods of showing measurable results in the community. The Spartanburg County Foundation has developed an extensive system to measure community indicators. When John Wardlaw was a foundation trustee in the 1980s, he said “it’s good to say this is a need, but we need measurables; what are the measurable results?” said Troy Hanna, president and CEO of the foundation.

High quality early learning programs are a major goal of United Way of Greenville County, to make sure children are ready for school. The results can be measured as children move along through their education.

The foundation took the concerns of Wardlaw, now trustee emeritus, to heart. Since 1989, the foundation has published data to raise awareness on key issues. Partnering with United Way of the Piedmont, Spartanburg County government, and the University of South Carolina Upstate, the foundation has developed critical indicators that show the area’s progress on issues such as public health, education, economic, social environment and natural environment. Collectively, it is known as the Spartanburg Community Indicators Project.

“We provide dashboards that show the results,” Hanna said.

“We can decide where funding would most benefit the community.”

Each issue’s dashboard is published in a brochure that shows the results in the form of easily John Wardlaw understood graphics. For example, the Education Dashboard 2014 measures leading indicators of third-grade reading and math, eighth-grade math and language arts proficiency, high school graduation and post-secondary completion. The data is tracked over several years, with projections and goals set for each indicator.

Each of the indicator topics has a lead organization to work on the issue, explained Hanna. The economic indicators’ lead organization is the Spartanburg Area Chamber of Commerce; the Spartanburg Academic Movement is the lead for the education area.

The goal of putting the information out is to inspire dialogue and strategy that can lead to change within the community.

When the data showed that just 19.2% of Spartanburg County residents over 25 hold at least a baccalaureate degree — well below neighboring counties — that inspired an effort to double that rate by 2030, Hanna said. The project is known as the 40/30 Challenge.

It recognizes a continuum of education, starting with preschool.

“There are markers throughout a person’s life, cradle to career,” Hanna said. “You have to enable the student beginning very early.”

use the community indicators for their strategic planning and outreach. The project has a website, www.strategicspartanburg.org.

United Way organizations have also begun to measure the nonprofits they fund against their goals, said Mike Posey, vice president for marketing and communications at United Way of Greenville County. The focus is on school readiness, high school graduation and financial stability.

“Programs have to prove alignment in those areas,” Posey said.

“We need to measure those in a very thorough and thoughtful way.” This makes sure that money given to a nonprofit is used toward meeting community goals.

The United Way has a strategy list and compiles a document explaining measures and outcomes. The expectation for organizations has led to some changes in the way funding is managed.

“Because we’re holding a program responsible for long-term outcomes one or two years later, we made a decision to have a three-year funding cycle,” Posey said. If the organization stays on track with its progress, its leaders know that they will have the funding for three years.

The United Way will always provide money for emergency needs, but measuring needs and results helps make the best use of planned funding.

In Anderson County, the United Way uses measurable results both internally and externally, said Shannon Owen, vice president of planning and community impact. Inside, the staff and board members look at community statistics to set common goals such as decreasing homelessness and improving early grade reading.

Outside in the community, they track the numbers to show results of funded programs, Owen said. As an example, a project to improve reading sends books monthly into children’s homes. “We are getting feedback from the parents to see if it’s helping,” she said.

The United Way of Anderson County focuses on early grade reading, financial stability, improving health and reducing obesity, smoke free communities and prevention of teen pregnancy. It has partnered with two school districts on reducing teen pregnancy, and the results have come in strong.

“There has been a 65%-80% decrease and it has been sustained,” Owen said. That’s a rewarding accomplishment to share with the community, she said. •

100 years of community foundations This year, 2014, marks the 100th anniversary of community foundations. The first one was started in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1914. This year, the membership organization, the Council on Foundations, will convene in Cleveland.

The Spartanburg County Foundation is the oldest community foundation in South Carolina, says Troy Hanna, president and CEO. The foundation was started in 1943 by Walter Montgomery Sr., who had been on a hunting trip with a friend from Winston-Salem and learned about a community foundation there. He brought the idea home and made the first $10,000 gift to help get it started.

The foundation is committed to improving the lives of Spartanburg County residents. It manages a portfolio of more than 900 charitable funds with assets in excess of $145 million. In 2013, $7.9 million in grants were made to community organizations.

Beyond providing funding, the foundation also brings diverse groups together to collaborate, form partnerships, address issues and generate giving and involvement.

Nonprofits offer support services for

VETERANS

The demand for services for U.S. military veterans is on the upswing, including for the more than 100,000 veterans living in the Upstate.

As a whole, South Carolina is home to more than 420,000 men and women who have served in the military.

To better meet veterans’ social and medical needs, the Upstate is home to a number of nonprofit organizations offering guidance and assistance. The Greenville Health System recently created an in-house Veterans’ Affairs Liaison Office to work closely with local veterans’ groups while building local partnerships and overseeing the system’s various veteran-focused projects.

Under the direction of Kevin McBride, a 23-year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, the Veterans Affairs Liaison Office promotes veteran wellness by working closely with other organizations assisting veterans.

“We have physicians, nurses and physical therapists volunteering with Honor Flight Upstate, which takes World War II and Korean War veterans to Washington for a special day to visit memorials in their honor,” McBride said. “We’re also in the community making sure veterans are aware of the various services provided by GHS, including those treating PTSD and traumatic brain injury, as well as opportunities for recreational therapy after the loss of a limb or another life-changing injury.”

Another key organization offering guidance is the S.C. Association of Veterans Affairs Officers headquartered in Lancaster. Composed of representatives from all 46 counties in South Carolina, the group offers a wealth of information and assistance for veterans and their dependents having questions about their federal benefits, medical services, county-specific programs, veteran facilities and general support inquiries. The association’s concentration is county-by-county which helps the agency deliver detailed and specific information.

Veterans considering taking advantage of their benefits to secure a college education can find programs at the region’s colleges including Furman University, Wofford College, Clemson University, Erskine College, ECPI, Embry-Riddle and Brown Mackie colleges. These schools all offer Yellow Ribbon Scholarships for veterans and their families engaged in service since 9/11. Yellow Ribbon Scholarships cover 100% of public school costs and a significant share of private school costs.

Honor Flight Upstate takes World War II and Korean War veterans to Washington, D.C., with assistance from volunteer doctors and nurses.

Brown Mackie College offers additional funding solutions, guidance and assistance for veterans. Degree programs are designed in a variety of career-focused areas of study in nursing, health care and wellness, business and technology, legal studies, veterinary technology, early childhood education and construction trades, operating at several locations. Certificates and undergraduates degrees are available.

Many veterans take advantage of Upstate Warrior Solution, a community-based nonprofit organization based in Greenville.

This group connects “warriors “and their families to the resources they need while guiding them through the process of developing realistic solutions in their personal lives and careers.

The organization defines a “warrior” as any service member who is currently serving or has served, regardless of military branch, the nature of a person’s discharge, current status or problems in their past.

“We collaborate with human service agencies, faith communities, governmental organizations, and local businesses to co-construct an environment conducive to a positive and supportive readjustment experience for local veterans,” said Chris McRae, program director. “We accomplish this with our clients through case coordination, case management, and by providing service and

Honoring Their Service is another GHS partner and assistance group hosted by residents of the Keowee Key area. Each summer they open their community to Marines from Camp Lejeune and local wounded warriors for respite and recreational therapy.

These children and families do not have access to enough food to live active and healthy lifestyles.

Greatest need: Harvest Hope is continually in need of food, funds and volunteers. Hosting a food drive or virtual food drive on our website is an excellent way to get involved. Monetarily, Harvest Hope is able to distribute 5 meals into the community for every dollar donated. There is also a great need for volunteer groups to sort food and pack food boxes for distribution.

MISSION STATEMENT Collins Children’s Home is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides a residential home for children between the ages of birth and 21 who have been abused, abandoned, neglected, orphaned or are otherwise unable to live with their families. Lunch/registration – 11:30 a.m.; shotgun start, 1 p.m.; dinner/ awards – immediately following play. Our golfers tell us this “is one of the classiest tournaments they play in each year…and getting to have dinner with our kids just puts it over the top.”

In September 2015, we will host our 32nd Annual Chicken Barbecue at Northside Elementary School, where we will sell 1,500 plates. This is our longest running fundraiser.

Greatest need: The Ronald McDonald House is 100% funded by its community of individuals and businesses. Without local community engagement, the House could not continue to operate and allow families to stay together during critical moments. Along with providing a place to stay near their child, we also provide three meals a day for our families. Our greatest needs are sponsorship and financial support along with food donations and volunteers.

2014 Top achievements: On April 1 of this year, the Ronald McDonald House of Greenville celebrated its 25th Anniversary. Since opening our doors in 1989, the Ronald McDonald House has served

2015 Goals: As the Upstate community and our hospital systems continue to grow, the Ronald McDonald house must expand its presence to continue to meet the demand for specialized pediatric care. The demand for our services has unfortunately caused us to turn away families or add them to an ever growing waiting list.

Our goal is to expand and add more rooms so that we can provide housing, meals, transportation and compassionate support for the growing number of families in need.

Fundraising events: March 14, 2015 — Greenville Roast Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Carolinas and a community leader team up for a comedy hour roast. Event will be held at Hyatt Regency Hotel in downtown Greenville.

April 24, 2015 — The Reedy River Jazz & Wine Festival, an evening of jazz, fine wine tasting and food at Larkin’s on the River and the TD Amphitheater at the Peace Center in support of the Ronald McDonald House.

May 8, 2015 —The Ronald Cup is our annual golf tournament with McDonald’s vendors, owner/operators and members of the community. The golf tournament will be at The Preserve at Embassy Suites.

May 2015 — One Night One Shirt. Local corporations and businesses can support our house by wearing to work our One Night One Shirt RMH T-shirt on a designated day in May. November 2015— Red Shoe Society-Greenville Royale ball for our young philanthropic group that supports the Ronald McDonald House.

December 2015 — Holiday McGala, The Best Christmas Party in Town! Our signature black tie event will be at the Embassy Suites in Greenville. Join us for an “Evening in Italy” this Christmas.

Fundraising events: • Seek & Snap, April 2015 – Teams of four can register to compete in a Scavenger Hunt Competition in Downtown Greenville.

This is a great team building exercise for businesses and memory making event for friends and family. Teams will be given a list of clues, riddles, and tasks and two hours to hit the streets of downtown to “Seek” out answers and “Snap” proof of their find.

• Dine Out for Mom, October 2015 – Restaurants partner with Let There Be Mom by committing to donate 20% of their total sales to Let There Be Mom. All interested restaurants should contact the organization for more information.

Greatest need: Specifically in education and workforce development, Michelin focuses heavily on supporting public education with multiple programs that impact elementary, middle and high schools, as well as technical colleges and universities that provide a pipeline for Michelin’s employment pool. In the 1970s when Michelin chose to establish its North American base in South Carolina, the company was attracted by the state’s technical school system and the strong, work-ready labor force it produced. Today, Michelin works closely with the state’s technical schools and other educational institutions to help them evolve and adapt to the future needs of manufacturers to enable South Carolina to remain competitive on a global scale.

Since 2009, the Michelin Challenge Education program has provided support to high poverty public elementary schools in the form of tutors, mentors, lunch buddies and financial contributions. The Upstate Volunteers There are always needs to be met in the Upstate, and there are always volunteers ready to help out. Thousands turn out for United Way’s Hands On Greenville Day, held each year on the first Saturday in May. Whenever there’s a run or walk to raise money, Upstate residents turn out enthusiastically to join in. The Greenville Drive provides nights in the spotlight for many nonprofits, and Greenville Health System sponsors events to raise money for health care needs and research. You can get involved too.
