othing says patience like boring a 6,000-foot, 11-foot wide tunnel through clay and solid granite 100 feet below Greenville. Project director Jason Gillespie said, tongue-in-cheek, that Renewable Water Resource’s construction partners, Super Excavators, had not yet uncovered any fossils or ancient artifacts in the walls of the tunnel while working on one of Greenville’s largest pipeline infrastructure projects, dubbed the Reedy River Basin Sewer Tunnel or just Dig Greenville. He’s just happy that the team’s tunneling, completed with a massive high-powered boring machine, finished on budget and on time for the project’s expected May 2021 completion date, especially after the crew had to trade out
the granite-only boring machine for blasting and traditional construction equipment for an unexpected 230-foot subterranean snag of rock and clay. “The face of the drill has these cutter heads that rotate and grind away at the rock little by little,” Gillespie said when describing the boring machine. “And when they have a good day, they can go 40 or even 50 feet a day.” Super Excavators and ReWa, along with civil engineering partner Black & Veatch, first broke ground on the $50 million project in 2018 in Cleveland Park where the tunnel starts out at 40 feet below. Over the course of about eight months since then, the team grappled its way uphill, crossing under Super Excavators’ high-powered boring machine uses rotating cutter heads to grind through pure granite.
