‘Economan’ Al Parish released early

isgraced economist and former Lowcountry financial celebrity Al Parish has been released early from prison after a judge determined he wouldn’t live long enough to serve the remainder of his sentence. Parish, who was sentenced to 292 months in federal prison in 2008, has been trying to get out early since the pandemic began. For nearly 13 years, Parish has been incarcerated in the same facility where Bernie Madoff was sentenced in North Carolina. U.S. District Judge Richard M. Gergel in Charleston said Parish first made his plea for a “compassionate release” from prison on April 10, 2020, with a laundry list of health issues. Parish made a hand-written filing with the court, and the judge denied his motion for release. Then he contracted COVID-19 in prison, made another request to be released, which also was denied. Parish appealed that decision and received another hearing before Gergel, who determined that Parish was a candidate.
