Dear Readers,

T

work of charitable giving organizations is challenging in the best of times. Raising money, assisting those in need, applying for grants and much more requires selflessness, focus and a high degree of commitment to a most worthy cause.

The coronavirus pandemic made that work more daunting than ever. The tragic loss of life, the massive burden placed on our health care infrastructure and the wholesale disruption of our lives and the economy have been unlike anything most of us have ever experienced.

Nonprofits face a grim landscape when it comes to fundraising, volunteerism and the need for aid and support. Corporations and individuals are still generous with their support, but that support is now hampered by drastically lower revenues and salaries. The pool of available volunteers, largely comprised of retired people, has shrunk as those who have the time and ability to donate their efforts are understandably reluctant to risk exposure to a potentially deadly virus. And this strain on resources comes amid a surge in those seeking help.

But the optimism of the charitable community in the Midlands continues undaunted by the harsh reality we find ourselves in. Like so many other sectors of the economy and community, nonprofits are learning to operate creatively within the restrictions this pandemic has forced upon us.

Collaboration across the nonprofit community has helped many organizations continue in their outreach and support efforts; virtual fundraising events are now the norm rather than the exception; and new health protocols are in place to minimize virus exposure for volunteers and recipients within food distribution networks.

SC Biz News is proud to partner with the United Way of the Midlands, Central Carolina Community Foundation, the Central South Carolina chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and so many other great Columbia-area nonprofits in bringing you the 2020 Columbia Regional Business Report Giving Guide. We hope you enjoy reading and learning about some of the outstanding work these groups do every day.

While we all grapple with the disruptions and anxiety the pandemic has wrought, we can take heart in the resolve of the Midlands nonprofit community to continue its mission of support and aid for those most in need.

Midlands nonprofits mobilize in crisis

hen the coronavirus prompted states, including South Carolina, to issue a shelter-at-home order in March, unemployment surged as huge parts of the state and national economy slowed or stopped. Soon after, there were calls for philanthropists, donors and charitably inclined people to accelerate their giving.

The Community Foundation team gathered to discuss the potential effects on our region and on our region’s nonprofits.

The needs were urgent. The pandemic thrust charities and social service agencies, like food banks, into an immediate role whose size and scope they were not prepared for. At the same time, arts organizations and other nonprofit groups that depend on sales of tickets to their galas and performances suddenly had no attendees and no audience.

As the region’s philanthropic collaborator, our foundation responded immediately and began working with local philanthropic, government and business partners locally; launching the Midlands Community Response Fund and activating the One SC Fund: COVID-19 Response. Since March, grants totaling over $3.5 million have been distributed to nonprofit organizations across our state. The grants have funded projects ranging from food distribution to housing and rent assistance programs.

Community foundations across the country have taken a leadership role. According to the Community Foundation Public Awareness Initiative, community foundations have raised, committed or granted more than $1 billion to support nonprofit coronavirus response efforts. The report tracked coronavirus-related grant making at nearly 600 community foundations. (The actual amount of spending and commitment is likely higher because there are nearly 800 community foundations in the United States.) Of the $1 billion tracked by the group, an estimated $800 million has already been granted to nonprofit organizations responding to the coronavirus. On top of that $1 billion, officials at CFPAI estimate that, since the Covid-19 pandemic began, at least $1 billion more has been granted from donor-advised funds managed by community foundations.

In the Midlands, our donors answered the call, giving more and giving faster than they had prior to the pandemic.

Numerous fundholders at Central Carolina Community Foundation supported COVID-19 relief efforts. Grants distributed from CCCF Donor-Advised funds during the second quarter of 2020 (April-June) increased 222% compared to the same period in 2019. A total of $4.4 million was distributed to nonprofits in our region and nation, helping them carry out their vital services.

Residents across the region also stepped up. On May 5, Midlands Gives, CCCF’s 18-hour online giving day, raised over $3.3 million, a 64% increase vs. 2019, for nonprofits

across our region. The number of donations also grew, topping 22,400 — a 57% increase. Also, 34% of the donations came from new donors, individuals who stepped up for the first time. Midlands Gives demonstrated the generosity of our region and our belief that it is our duty and privilege to provide financial support.

We are now in the seventh month of the pandemic. Our new reality has brought into focus how critical nonprofit organizations are to our region. They continue to provide food, shelter and financial assistance. They are providing childcare and medical assistance. They are providing joy, virtually, through the arts and music. And, they are struggling.

A survey conducted in September by College of Charleston’s Riley Center for Livable Communities and Together SC, our state’s nonprofit association, found that 29% of the 566 organizations that responded could only operate for three more months without additional financial support. Nearly two-thirds indicated they could only survive for six months or less without additional funding. Since COVID-19, in total, 76% reported a decrease in funding. Without our continued and generous support, a sector that is vital to our recovery will falter.

We are confident that our community will, as it always has, answer the call. In times of stress, true character always shines.

The many acts of kindness, generosity and gratitude we have all witnessed during the past seven months have given us the strength and courage to hope.

Philanthropy is a powerful tool. This is why we believe so strongly in the importance of giving back to our community.

Collaborating with creativity

sually, we think of history as in the past — events that we look back on and from which we learn lessons.

Today, however, we are living in the middle of history.

The pandemic and its economic consequences, living with constant uncertainty, facing longstanding issues of racial equity and justice — all at the same time. That is living history.

But unique times like this spark creativity and innovation. For United Way of the Midlands, and with your support, our work and mission in serving our community hasn’t wavered, and I would argue it has strengthened with this kind of innovation and creativity in collaboration with our partners and supporters.

The immediate impacts of the pandemic were clear. Millions of Americans faced unemployment, food insecurity and housing instability, many for the first time. Education for school children was suddenly interrupted, threatening to make learning disparities even wider, and turned virtual regardless of access to technology (or lack thereof). And for all of us, we had to learn how to be physically separated by social distance practices to keep each other safe.

At UWM, we had to be as creative and innovative as possible to continue our vital work in addressing these critical needs. We’ve funded some out-of-the-box initiatives, we’ve pivoted current programs to meet the current challenges and combined community outreach efforts to offer virtual opportunities for discussion and learning.

For the first time, we’ve funded technology initiatives. Access to WiFi was needed immediately to help students experiencing homelessness keep up with their peers academically and not miss out on instruction time. The United Way of the Midlands COVID-19 Response Fund assisted Homeless No More and Palmetto Place Children and Youth Services with funding to upgrade internet services at their locations. The upgrade allowed students to get their schoolwork done while maintaining safe distance from one another, and the upgrades continue to allow students to have direct instruction during this time of virtual learning.

We also provided tablets and WiFi hotspots for kindergarten students in our Resilient Richland program. Teams developed Interactive Learning Binders on the tablets so that these kindergarteners, who come from families experiencing trauma, allowed these students to continue learning over the summer and keep learning gaps from widening.

One of our longstanding programs is the Midlands Reading Consortium, which provides one-on-one, in-person tutoring for more than 600 young readers at risk. This program not only has been able to pivot to virtual tutoring but also has expanded components such as guest readers in virtual classrooms. This means we are not only helping more students than ever, but we are giving more opportunities for volunteers to work with the students.

We’ve continued to support our schools, particularly those in underserved areas, by conducting a virtual school supply drive. Led

by UWM’s Young Leaders Society, the drive allowed donors to visit an online store and purchase supplies from the supply list. Volunteers gathered afterward to package them and distribute them for teachers.

And to continue to spur creative thought and innovative solutions in the community, we combined the community awareness components of two of our programs, Youth in Transition and Resilient Richland, to create our virtual Youth and Resiliency Community Conversation Series. This series has hosted panel discussions, speakers and virtual activities addressing some of the most pressing issues today, including how to discuss race, racism and protests with children, understanding and responding to trauma in youth, and youth and the criminal justice system.

None of this, though, would happen without each and every one of you! Thanks to your incredible generosity, we raised more than $820,000 in our Covid-19 Response Fund, which funded all of this work and more. Together, through this fund, we have provided direct help and support to more than 14,000 individuals and families affected by Covid-19, more than 10,000 of whom were accessing help for the first time. This includes access to food, rent and utility support, protective gear for agencies that deal directly with vulnerable populations, and capacity building so nonprofits can serve even more people during this crisis. As we continue to live history, let’s continue to work together to meet the challenges and needs of this time. PIVOTING IN A PANDEMIC

For nonprofits, surviving in a pandemic requires resilience and collaborative spirit

While many nonprofit organizations specialize in responding to crisis situations, no one could have possibly predicted the all-encompassing and continuing crisis that is the COVID-19 pandemic. Like everyone, the nonprofit community had to innovate, learn new lessons quickly and adapt. Unlike many, nonprofits had to deal with a spike in need coupled with a major drop in resources.

A survey released in September by the College of Charleston’s Riley Center paints an uncertain picture of the current state for South Carolina’s nonprofit community. Key findings include:

• Five percent indicate they are out of funds now.

• Twenty-nine percent say they can only operate for three more months without additional financial support. Nearly two-thirds (63 percent) of nonprofits indicate they can survive for only six months or less without additional funding.

• Since COVID-19, in total, 76 percent report a decrease in funding, while 24 percent indicate a slight or significant increase. There is great variation by sector with arts, culture and the humanities being the most negatively affected and human services and public and social benefits faring better.

• Looking forward through the end of the calendar year, South Carolina’s nonprofits have significant needs to continue their missions, further adapt their service models and offset lost revenue from cancelled galas and fundraising events. Fifty-four percent report that their greatest need is cash to meet operating needs due to lost revenue. In aggregate, responding

nonprofits need more than $61 million to replace lost revenues and sustain themselves through the end of the calendar year. To sum it up, some didn’t survive; more will likely close their doors for good; and those who remain standing will do so due to major collaborative efforts and creative approaches to how they operate.

Nonprofits have put forth tremendous efforts in dealing with the added challenges of the pandemic.

Nevertheless, nonprofit leaders acknowledge that the survey is an accurate assessment of the state of affairs.

Surge in demand In the Midlands, as has been the case everywhere, the need for services from organizations like the United Way spiked, even as resources became stretched.

families requiring assistance, basic living needs are not the only services nonprofits provide, nor are they the only services a community needs to thrive. Unfortunately, in many places, arts-oriented and recreational organizations are especially hurting as fundraising events, performances, and exhibitions have been delayed or canceled. Worse, in many cases, such organizations are not considered critical needs like food, shelter and medical care.

However, they, too, are finding opportunities to collaborate as well as finding donors and support. For example, the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, a long-time philanthropic partner for the city of Columbia, has made it a key point to help support many quality-oflife areas, from public open and green spaces, parks and recreational opportunities to arts and cultural amenities. In May, the Knight Foundation awarded $270,000 in grants to 15 Columbia-area nonprofit arts organizations.

“The Knight Foundation is pleased to offer much-needed assistance to the art organizations of Columbia,” Lilly Weinberg, Knight Foundation Director of Community and National Initiatives, stated. “Artists provide necessary connections among people and places, and it is vital that they be able to continue their work engaging the community through shared cultural expression.

Ultimately, a community is only as strong as its citizens, and while some volunteers have felt compelled to scale back the extent of their involvement due to the pandemic, others have stepped up in different functions and areas. To Moore and others, the fact that so many people are still willing to help, especially in times of great adversity, clearly illustrates the strength of the Midlands community.

“We have a lot of people still interested in volunteering,” Moore said. “We have been very fortunate — I think it really speaks to the generosity of the Midlands community. People here want to help each other and lift up each other, and that makes the Midlands a great place to be.”

PIVOTING IN A PANDEMIC

S.C. nonprofits need $61 million to stay afloat

I

t’s hard to envision a state that in mere months could be without organizations to feed the hungry, teach children to read and showcase the arts — but the reality isn’t far-fetched.

A statewide survey shows that 63% of nonprofits in South Carolina have six months or less of viability without additional funding. Of that group, five percent are already out of money and 29% indicated they can operate up to three more months.

Funded by S.C. Grantmakers Network, the survey assessed the financial health of the state’s nonprofits from Sept. 1-8. Rapid turnaround was necessary to provide accurate data to state lawmakers as they decided where remaining coronavirus relief funds will be allocated.

The survey was distributed to 2,954 charitable organizations through United Way offices, community foundations, philanthropic foundations and Together SC. As of Sept. 18, the network had received 566 responses, with 19% from Richland County, 17% from Charleston County and 12% from Greenville County.

JoAnn Turnquist, president and CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation, said the survey results were not surprising. Organizations in the Midlands report that financial support and personal protection equipment are the most critical needs.

“Not-for-profits are employers, just as small and large businesses are,” she said. “The buildings may have closed, but for a majority of these nonprofits, the work hasn’t stopped.”

Roughly 2,500 nonprofits in the state received loans early on in the pandemic from the Paycheck Protection Program, which includes a provision to turn the loans into forgivable grants, but Madeleine McGee, president of Together SC, said almost half of respondents hadn’t received funding.

“I know anecdotally from a couple organizations that the concept that it was a loan scared away boards,” she said.

For Phase II of the state’s federal coronavirus aid approved Sept. 23, lawmakers allocated $25 million of their $693 million to nonprofits.

by Dec. 31, so this time around, McGee is providing tools to organizations to help them apply.

In total, the organizations that responded to the survey say they need $61 million to replace lost revenue and maintain operations through the end of 2020, illuminating how much COVID-19 has put pressure on nonprofits that serve community needs.

The grass is somewhat greener Compared to the rest of the state, Greenville’s financial health is slightly more stable, the survey revealed, with 52% of the region’s organizations indicating they could survive another six months and only 2% out of funds.

One reason for the area’s stronger foothold is that Greenville County is the most populous in South Carolina with 523,542 residents — over 100,000 more than Charleston or Richland counties — and philanthropic donations are substantial.

“Many of our rural counties have no philanthropic organizations dedicated to their geographic area,” said Katy Pugh Smith, facilitator for Greenville Partnership for Philanthropy, a financial supporter of the survey.

The Paycheck Protection Program also was a game-changer for many nonprofits, according to Virginia Wilson, communications manager of

CommunityWorks. The organization is a lending institution for Greenville’s nonprofits and one of the survey respondents.

“We not only applied for the PPP and received the PPP, but we were also able to help other organizations and other businesses apply, and we were approved to be a lender for the Paycheck Protection Program,” she said.

Overall with the funding they received, CommunityWorks helped process more than $2.6 million in loans for small businesses and nonprofits.

“While the data shows we’re faring a little bit better than other parts of the state, we’re still tracking this very closely for Greenville and Greenville County in terms of those needs through the end of the calendar year,” said Meghan Barp, CEO and president of United Way of Greenville County.

By sectors, arts, culture and humanities have taken the hardest hits, according to the survey.

But even with an increase in donations, human services, public and social organizations — such as those that provide housing and food assistance — have experienced a substantial increase in need.

and transportation was $85,000 a month. The last five months, their budget has ballooned to $500,000 a month.

Model behavior The nonprofit business model is challenging in normal times. Organizations need every dollar they earn every single year. As a best practice, McGee said they should have a reserve of three months’ operational budget — which is what’s playing out now.

Should any nonprofits be forced to shutter, reopening could take years or decades, she said. They essentially would have to reopen a new business from scratch.

Edie Blakeslee, vice president of grantmaking and community leadership at Coastal Community Foundation, elaborated: There’s paperwork to be filed at the state level, and assets must be dissolved and distributed.

Raising money all over again is then even more challenging.

“You have to figure out what your three- to four-year projections are, what your financial and staffing needs are and your programming.

And then you have to secure all that,” Blakeslee said. “COVID has really laid bare how difficult it is for nonprofits to do what they do day in and day out, but this has just amplified it.”

For months, nonprofits have readjusted, taking a hard look at what’s not directly tied to long-term success and pulling back to focus on more mission-centric activities. Their government funding, which makes up 30% of an organization’s budget on average, has been gutted. Individuals are contracting donations,

and corporate sponsors are rethinking charitable gifts.

To maintain community engagement, Turnquist is seeing a lot more personal outreach by a handwritten note or a call. After canceling its gala, one Midlands nonprofit sent picnic baskets of their planned meals to those who purchased tickets.

“We’re also seeing incredibly sophisticated social media outreach,” she said.

In the spring, more than 400 Midlands organizations brought in $3.3 million in donations through the annual Midlands Gives, an online day of giving. By harnessing Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to expand their reach, the donor base increased by 34% over last year.

People are paying attention, McGee said.

While the survey is anonymous, nonprofit leaders are listening, and she urges those who need help to speak up today because tomorrow could be too late.

“I would say to the treasurers out there, your organizations need you. Do not be asleep at the wheel; this is the time to really engage,” she said. “Provide your wisdom and expertise from the board and beyond, and help them figure out what the financial structure looks like to get through this.”

Harvest Hope quickly amended operations to a drive-thru service line to limit personto-person exposure and quickly serve the more than 5 times increase in need. From March-September 2020, Harvest Hope served over 195,000 individuals just through our two Emergency Food Pantries.

2019-2020 ALYCE KEMP DEWITT WINNER Hayes Mizell, an Always United member who has served on the United Way of Midlands Education Council since 2005, was named the 2020 Alyce Kemp Dewitt Award winner in July.

The award recognizes a volunteer whose service has made a measurable impact.

“When I think about Alyce and the spirit of this award, I couldn’t think of a better recipient,” said Sara Fawcett, United Way of Midlands President and CEO. “His dedication and commitment to the Midlands and the state are a part of who he is and what he does to help improve the lives of others.”

Hayes semi-retired in 2003, but his involvement and commitment to education and to the Midlands community only seemingly grew after this.

He has been instrumental in the growth of the Midlands Reading Consortium through his service on the MRC Oversight Committee.

LIVE UNITED VOLUNTEER AWARD WINNERS The LIVE UNITED volunteer awards are received by members of the community nominated for their spirit of volunteerism and service to United Way. Danielle Boysen and Kieley Sutton received 2019-2020 LIVE UNITED awards for positively impacting local agency programs and projects that support human service needs in the Midlands.

Danielle’s impact on Women in Philanthropy is difficult to quantify because her leadership led to so many wonderful activities within our organization. We may never know exactly how many lives were touched by the grant funding Danielle brought to a vote during her year of service as WIP Chair. Under her leadership, Women in Philanthropy awarded $50,000 to Homeless No More last year, funding career readiness programs for the women and families living at St. Lawrence Place.

Kieley Sutton (bottom photo second from left), an attorney at the 5th Circuit Public Defenders Office, is a tireless advocate for community change. Kieley is a volunteer with our Inclement Weather Center and routinely teams up with our community street outreach workers to visit campsites to engage with people experiencing homelessness and connect to resources. She is also a leader in our unaccompanied youth work. Kieley participates in our youth case conferencing sessions to help connect young people experiencing homelessness with housing and resources.

Both women are advocates for people who are often overlooked and forgotten. They are assets to our work at United Way and to the Midlands community.

A CLOSER LOOK: 2020 TOP ACHIEVEMENTS: Thanks to donors who supported our COVID-19 Response Fund, we provided direct help and support to more than 14,000 individuals and families affected by COVID-19, more than 10,000 of whom were accessing help for the first time. This was in addition to more than 44,500 people served by our Community Impact grants last year. United Way strives to have children ready for school, reading by third grade and involved in programs and services that maintain and improve their academic success.

• 21,136 parents demonstrated increased knowledge about their children’s development through school readiness and parent engagement programs • More than 570 children were tutored through United Way’s Midlands Reading Consortium program.

• 2,254 students participated in quality in and out of school time programs.

United Way-supported programs placed more than 1,000 people experiencing homelessness into housing. An additional 115 youth ages 17-24 also were placed in housing.

United Way and hospital partners established WellPartners to serve Richland, Lexington and Fairfield counties. Services provided through WellPartners include eye and dental care for adults and dental care for children. All services are provided to people who are underinsured or uninsured and have limited income.

• 2,970 adults and children visited the dental and eye clinics in 2018-2019, totaling almost 6,500 visits.

2020-21 GOALS: After the immediate COVID-19 crisis fades, individuals and communities will be far more digital. If we can continue to build new bridges between community needs and resources, we’ll be able to lead society’s response, recovery and rebuilding from COVID-19. Moving forward, we will continue to work together to create a new normal in our society where all individuals and communities have the resources and opportunities they need to succeed. Our outcomes will continue to focus on helping young students read on grade level by 3rd grade, reducing the stigma of trauma and build resilience among children and youth through Resilient Richland, and providing free dental and eye services to children and adults in the Midlands at our WellPartners clinics.

Additionally, we installed more than 2,500 free smoke alarms and made nearly 800 homes safer through educational visits and creating preparedness plans. Thanks to our compassionate donors’ generosity, volunteers, and community partners, your Red Cross brought relief and comfort to thousands of South Carolinians after Hurricane Dorian and the spring tornadoes brought high winds and torrential rains that uprooted lives and destroyed

GREATEST NEED: MFC needs financial resources and more volunteers to serve the fathers and families in our program. It costs MFC about $2000 to serve a father, but we offer our services for free. We will serve about 800 fathers and impact nearly 2,000 children in the Midlands this year. We need funding, especially for meals, for direct services for fathers, graduations and father-child activities.

A CLOSER LOOK: 2020 TOP ACHIEVEMENTS: • Pivoted quickly with COVID to move to virtual group sessions • Added Rapid Re-Employment Program to help fathers who became unemployed during COVID-19 • Worked with other non-profit and communitybased organizations to address community needs in COVID-19, including Woman’s Club of Columbia, United Way, Central Carolina Community Foundation, Harvest Hope and Communities in School to help provide services such as father-child activities, school supplies and meals for our participants • With the SC Center for Fathers and Families, launched the co-branded “Dad-Facts” campaign • Leadership Columbia Selected MFC as a finalist for their class project for two years in a row.

2021 GOALS: • Complete the Dad’s Den, a space with a computer lab, father-child activity area, movie area and games and recreation area.

• Complete the 2021 Strategic Plan • Raise $250K from individual donors, corporations, individuals, local foundations, local governments and civic groups.

• Raise $20K in the Daddy and Me 5K — open to all runners!
