WELCOME TO 2020 The first time it occurred to me that coronavirus could affect our fall conference, I’ve got to admit it sent a little shiver down my spine. But by the time our team decided that — for the good of everyone — the best option was a virtual conference, we were all gaining some virtual savvy. Daily life for us now ranges from simple Zoom meetings to more elaborate undertakings like the Power Events where we at SC Biz News honed our skills at conducting virtual get-togethers that are worth attending.

Although I’m looking forward to a live event in another year, it is with great pride that I share with you this glance at what we have in store for this year’s virtual conference and expo. We have some great speakers, including Gov. Henry McMaster and Commerce Secretary Bobby Hitt. Our conference partners — SCMEP, SCRA, The S.C. Council on Competitiveness and the S.C. Technical College System — were instrumental in formulating content and procuring knowledgeable speakers.

We also have a full lineup of exhibitors and we even found a way to increase the amount of time attendees can rub elbows and swap business cards in our virtual expo hall. The exhibit hall will be open for business for 30 days, beginning Oct. 29.

Find out just how intelligent the smart factory of the future will be as we dedicate a portion of the conference to Industry 4.0 Manufacturing — from VR and AI to collaborative robots and automated guided vehicles. Hear the 2021 Auto Economic Outlook, learn about the Logistics Economic Impact Study and be there for the first presentation of the Aerospace Economic Impact Study. And the anchor event, as always, will be the 23rd annual Manufacturing Excellence Awards.

We have 38 speakers over two days, which will provide 14 hours of manufacturing conference content on SCBIZtv. And our new training portal, SCBIZ Upskill, houses 20+ training courses for manufacturing employees and other industry executives.

This year will be remembered as much for the way we all reacted to COVID-19 as it will be for the virus itself. Our role was to keep doing business and to put on a conference worth attending. I hope you enjoy.

Henry Dargan McMaster of Columbia became the 117th Governor of South Carolina on Jan. 24, 2017. McMaster previously served two years as lieutenant governor, eight years as attorney general and four years as U.S. attorney. McMaster was the first U.S. attorney appointed

by President Ronald Reagan, and was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate. McMaster has served on the South Carolina Ports Authority Board of Directors, the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, the Palmetto Health Foundation Board and the South Carolina Policy Council (as chairman). He is admitted to practice in all courts, state and federal, in South Carolina, as well as the U.S. Court of Claims (1974), the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit (1975) and the Supreme Court of the United States (1978).

Robert “Bobby” M. Hitt III has served as South Carolina Secretary of Commerce since January 2011. Promoting a teamfirst approach to economic development, Hitt has positioned the S.C. Department of Commerce and its many partners and allies for industry recruitment success.

Since 2011, Team South Carolina has recruited more than $41 billion in capital investment and approximately 147,000 new jobs to the state.

Now a premier brand state, multiple world-class companies have made significant investments in South Carolina during Hitt’s tenure, including BMW, Boeing, Bridgestone, Continental, Giti Tire, LPL Financial Holdings, Mercedes-Benz Vans, Michelin, Samsung, Toray, Volvo Cars and more. Before his time as Secretary of Commerce, Hitt served as manager of Corporate Affairs at the BMW Manufacturing Company in Spartanburg County after 17 years as managing editor of The State and Columbia Record newspapers.
