Many things make Irmo a special place W
hat makes Irmo special? There are so many things. You can kayak on the scenic Saluda River from Saluda Shoals Park. Shop for the latest fashions at Columbiana Centre. Enjoy a professional or community performance at Midlands Tech’s Harbison Theatre. And that’s just a start. Here are some of our very special events and places: Okra Strut: The Lexington Medical Center Irmo Okra Strut has provided family fun for the Town of Irmo and neighboring counties since the early 1970s. The festival was primarily set up as a fundraiser for the Lake Murray-Irmo Woman’s Club in 1974, with the goal to build a new library for the Irmo community. Now a nationally known event, the “Strut” keeps the traditions of street fairs of old. Nestled into its new permanent home in the Community Park of Irmo, the Okra Strut features a street dance, parade, arts and crafts, rides and amusements, petting zoo, and lots of festival food. Held in the fall, the event kicks off on Friday evening with the street dance and Okra Eating Contest. On Saturday morning the second largest parade in South Carolina leads off with floats and entries from around the state. Amusements and rides provide hours of entertainment while vendors ply their wares.
Columbiana Centre: While the area in and around Irmo has changed substantially since 1990, one constant is the presence of one of the most dynamic shopping centers in the state. “We’ve reached a point where we are consistently the first choice for retailers entering the Midlands,” said Columbiana Centre General Manager Andrew Peach. “Retailers recognize that we have the strongest demographics, the best mix of co-tenants and great customer loyalty — all of the things they are looking for when they open a new location.” An affirmation of Peach’s statement is the lineup of first-to-market, exclusive retailers at the mall. Aldo, bareMinerals, Build-A-Bear Workshop, Charming Charlie, Coach, Forever 21, Hollister Co., Michael Kors, PANDORA, Sephora, Vans and Zumiez all have their only Columbia location at Columbiana Centre. Amenities and events enhance the shopping experience at Columbiana. From the carousel and family events to blood drives, animal adoption events and celebrity appearances, the mall stays busy.

luda River, this 480-acre regional park offers an 11,000-square-foot Environmental Education Center and Exhibit Hall and the 10,000 square-foot state-ofthe-art conference facility, the River Center. For more casual recreation, the park has paved and unpaved trails; a river observation deck and picnic shelters; a boat ramp and canoe/kayak launch; playground and Saluda Splash (open during warmer months). It also has tennis courts and a soccer complex. The park houses the administrative offices of the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission.
Saluda Shoals Park: A premier natural, environmentally sensitive riverfront park that invites visitors to experience the treasures of the Saluda River through exceptional educational, recreational and cultural opportunities. Located along the banks of the beautiful Sa-
Community Park: Irmo opened its new Community Park in late 2013. The park, home to the Okra Strut, is a great place for families to enjoy the outdoors. It features an amphitheater, two playgrounds and a nature trail on 14 acres. Located on Eastview Road, it is the town’s second park.

Our long legacy as a top district is the result of the combined efforts of many individuals and groups supporting our students. The district earned a top rating on national rating site Niche.com, and a recent No. 1 ranking for “Districts with the Best Teachers in South Carolina.” Our elementary and middle schools are ranked among the top in the state for academics by Niche. com, and in 2019, 163 School District Five middle school students were named South Carolina Junior Scholars for PSAT scores and other measures. School District Five high schools are among the
best in the state and the nation, preparing students for college and careers annually. U.S. News & World Report’s 2019 Best High Schools rankings rated the district at the top for preparing students for college, and several students earned National Merit Scholarships during the 2018-2019 school year. The district’s SAT and ACT scores were again among the top in the state, and School District Five’s graduating classes earned millions in academic and athletic scholarships. also is a leader in career development opportunities for students with special needs, winning numerous awards for its BOOM (Building Occupational Opportunities in the Midlands) initiative with Midlands Technical College and Project SEARCH program with Prisma Health. We know that characteristics taught in school will carry over to college and career successes. School District Five students and staff annually participate in community service events and contribute to March of Dimes, United Way and other charitable organizations. Our schools provide a wide array of enrichment opportunities, from top athletic teams and activities to award-winning arts and music programs. School District Five sports teams had successful seasons during the 2018-2019 school year, including state championships in cheer, football, baseball and lacrosse. Band, choir, orchestra and arts programs in elementary, middle and high schools also continued to shine, receiving several prestigious awards. Groups like FFA, HOSA and DECA also continued to give our students opportunities to hone their skills and grow their passions. These honors and accolades are made possible through the work and dedication of our world-class educators, many of whom are among the best in
the state and nation. The district had two principals earn statewide awards. Dr. Michael Lofton was named 2019 South Carolina School Administrators Association High School Level Principal of the Year, while Anna Miller was named the 2019 South Carolina Middle Level Principal of the Year. School District Five Chief of Planning and Administration Michael Harris was also named the 2019 District Level Administrator of the Year by the South Carolina Association of School Administrators, and many other teachers and staff earned local and state awards. Irmo Police Department
Irmo Police Department’s officers are on patrol 24 hours a day, and they also offer educational programs for the community.
Irmo Police Department offers helpful programs for residents
I
rmo Police Department is an accredited agency of 27 officers serving a community of about 12,000 people. By South Carolina standards, the Irmo Police Department is a medium to large agency. The department offers several different programs to keep the lines of communication open between the department and the community. Officers are on patrol 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Irmo Police Department participates in the nationwide E911 program and emergency services are available by dialing 911. The Irmo Police Department sponsors a Law Enforcement Explorer post through the Boy Scouts of America. This program allows young people ages 13 to 19 with an interest in being a police officer to learn about law enforcement from officers within the department. Members of the post receive instruc-
tion in different areas of police work and then compete against other posts in South Carolina. The post adviser is Sgt. John Hendricks, and he can be reached at 803-781-8088. Also offered by the Irmo Police Department is a program for our senior citizens called Serving Our Seniors (SOS). We offer educational programs throughout the year about avoiding scams, crime prevention and weather preparedness. We also contact program participants if we have advanced notice of inclement weather. If you would like to participate in the SOS program, contact the department at 803-781-8088, or if you have any questions about the SOS program, call Sgt. Donnie Hare, who heads up the SOS program. Finally, we offer house checks for citizens who are away on vacation, fingerprinting services to citizens who are required to have their fingerprints taken for occupational reasons (teachers, stockbrokers, etc.) and child safety seat inspections. All of these services

Irmo Fire Department
T
Irmo Fire District always ready to serve
he Irmo Fire District was established in 1963 as a special purpose district enacted by the South Carolina Legislature.
We have a long and outstanding history of pride and tradition that allows us to work together as a family and serve our community in a most efficient manner. The IFD serves between 45,000 and 50,000 citizens spread across an area of approximately 28 square miles. This includes the Irmo Fire District, the Town of Irmo, Lexington County, Richland County and areas of Ballentine and St. Andrews. We also have automatic aid agreements with the City of Columbia and Lexington County Fire Service. Irmo Fire District provides daily emergency and non-emergent services to our citizens, businesses and visitors by responding to all types of fires, emergency medical incidents, motor vehicle crashes, swift water rescue, hazardous material incidents, natural disasters, citizen assists and technical rescues. Our services also include community risk reduction efforts, such as fire prevention, code enforcement, public services, public education and community outreach. IFD is dedicated to providing the highest level of service in all of these categories. Our two fire stations house two engines, one tower ladder, and one rescue ladder and a rescue boat. We
have a third fire station under construction, which will improve our ability to provide services to a growing community. This station will be located near the Irmo Police Department on Childs Street. Our 39 suppression personnel are divided into three shifts, with firefighters on duty 24 hours a day, seven days a week, every day of the year. Our dedicated Fire Marshal is committed to preserve lives through community safety education, effective fire inspections, detailed fire plan reviews, comprehensive fire investigation and smoke alarms. We install over 100 smoke alarms and carbon monoxide alarms annually through a grant given to the Irmo Fire Foundation. Being a fire fighter is more than putting out fires; we answer over 4,200 calls for service annually, of which only 7% are fire calls. Over 35% of calls are for public service, community care, lifting assistance, wellness checks and other “well-being” activities. IFD also provides free car seat checks and is an official Kohl’s Buckle Buddies fitting station. We love being a part of the community, and are happy to schedule apparatus and safety demos at day cares, schools, church groups, homeowners associations and public events. These enable us to teach basic fire safety to our citizens. We enjoy giving tours of the station and encourage future fire fighters that want a closer look at the fire engines to stop by.

he Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission (ICRC) has been offering quality indoor and outdoor recreation programs, youth and adult athletics, after-school programs, environmental education, senior services, cultural art programming, and FUN for more than 40 years. ICRC operates four signature parks and provides a multitude of engaging activities. Seven Oaks Park is a full-service recreation complex offering fitness, athletics, instructional and cultural arts programs to the Irmo community since 1973. Seven Oaks Park (SOP) hosts special

Crooked Creek Park is a state-of-the-art recreation complex that opened in 1994 to serve the Chapin area of the Irmo Chapin Recreation District. The park quickly became an integral part of the Chapin community and serves as a recreational and social hub for Chapin residents.
