The 2018 SC Manufacturing Conference and Expo is shaping up to be, in a word, HUGE! Since its inception in 2015, we’ve referred to this conference as the most significant manufacturing event in South Carolina, maybe even in the Southeast. We challenged ourselves to provide attendees with more to do and see than ever before. We succeeded.

Attendees will be able to attend more than a dozen workshops. The Workforce Development Breakfast will open the conference. And the panel discussion, Exceptional Executives: Women Who are Leading the Way, will be one of the highlights on the second day.

In addition, 250 exhibitors — making up the manufacturing supply chain — will come from all parts of the country to see what all the fuss is about. And purchasing executives from 16 of the state’s key OEMs will be on hand to meet individually with those exhibitors as part of the conference’s B2B Matchmaking event.

Throw in our anchor event, Wednesday’s Salute to Manufacturing Awards Luncheon, and a keynote by the governor, and you have more business-to-business and networking opportunities than you could possibly tackle in two days.

We anticipate more than 2,500 attendees. I hope you’ll be one of them. And while there, I hope you find something to inspire you as you immerse yourself in the trends and topics that power today’s vibrant manufacturing culture. Should be fun!

The Expo Cafe has you covered, with artisan pizzas, burgers, pulled pork, hot sandwiches and other items to fill you up for lunch. It will be open from 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on Tuesday and 10:30 a.m.-3 p.m. on Wednesday.

The Reception Unwind and keep the networking going at the end of the day on Tuesday, Sept. 11, in the networking lounge in front of the Expo Cafe at 5 p.m. All attendees speakers, panelists, sponsors and exhibitors are welcome to attend.

FEATURED SPEAKERS MEGAN POLLOCK Vice President of Strategic Communications, Samsung Electronics America Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 8 a.m.

Megan Pollock is responsible for creating the message, identifying the key audiences and securing the means to educate policymakers and the policymaking community about Samsung’s employees, innovation, investment and philanthropy in the United States.

Prior to joining Samsung in 2014, Pollock was vice president for DKC Public Relations, Marketing and Government Affairs. In this role, she oversaw DKC’s expansion into Washington, D.C., and managed media relations campaigns around legislative and regulatory issues and branding initiatives. She served a diverse array of clients with national public policy requirements, ranging from Yahoo to the Children’s Health Fund.

Pollock’s keynote speech will open the conference on Tuesday, Sept. 11.

GOVERNOR HENRY MCMASTER South Carolina Governor Tuesday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m.

Henry Dargan McMaster of Columbia became the 117th Governor of South Carolina on January 24, 2017.

McMaster previously served two years as lieutenant governor, eight years as attorney general and four years as United States attorney. McMaster was the first U.S. attorney appointed

by President Ronald Reagan, and was unanimously confirmed by the United States Senate.

McMaster has served on the South Carolina Ports Authority Board of Directors, the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education, the Palmetto Health Foundation Board and the South Carolina Policy Council (as chairman).

He is admitted to practice in all courts, state and federal, in South Carolina, as well as the U.S. Court of Claims (1974), the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit (1975) and the Supreme Court of the United States (1978).

THOMAS MAKOSCH Director, IoT for the Americas, Bosch Group Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 12:15 p.m.

Thomas Makosch acts as director for digital business for the Bosch Group.

He leads teams focused on strategizing and implementing digital social business and building the Bosch IoT Ecosystem throughout the Americas, a cornerstone of Bosch’s digital strategy, with its Bosch IoT Marketplace, Bosch Developer Portal and ThingBook at the core. The ecosystem is designed as open community, extending to work with start-ups, partners, end users and public bodies. Exceptional Executives panel explores why industry can’t live without women

A

panel of women in manufacturing leadership positions on Wednesday will discuss the role women have in today’s workforce.

An adjunct professor at Case Western Reserve University’s Weatherhead School of Management in Cleveland believes the manufacturing sector needs to put women in more leadership roles — and not just for appearances.

Kathlen Buse recommends that manufacturers commit to including women in meaningful leadership roles, make sure their work is challenging and interesting, and assign mentors and sponsors to women at the workplace.

Besides doing so for the principled reason of providing equal opportunity, Buse argued in her article published in the trade journal Industry Week that equal opportunity for women also means more sales and profit for business.

“A recent meta-analysis of studies dating back to the 1990s shows that a firm’s financial performance increases when women are in more than token leadership roles,” she wrote. “This is specifically true when a woman is the CEO. Having more women on corporate boards increases earnings and sales.”

She cited 2016 data that showed women were 47% of the workforce but less than 30% of the industrial workforce. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, there were always more men than women with college degrees until 1995, when about 25% of American men and women had degrees, but women passed men then and haven’t looked back. The gap continues to widen for college degrees, but women are still underrepresented at high levels of many business sectors, including manufacturing.

According to Catalyst, an organization with a goal of accelerating the progress of women in the workplace, women in 2016 comprised less than 30% of the S&P 500 durable goods manufacturing workforce, 20% of the executives and only 5% of the CEOs. “The data and research related to women in manufacturing create a compelling business case for having more women in manufacturing leadership,” Buse wrote. “The bottom line from five decades of research on women in leadership is that there is an irrefutable and verifiable link between women in leadership and improved business performance.”

On Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 9 a.m. Suzanne Dickerson, director of logistics industry initiatives for the S.C. Council on Competitiveness, will moderate one of the highlights of the conference — Exceptional Executives: Women Who Are Leading the Way. Dickerson joined the council after serving for eight years as director of international business development at Clemson University’s International Center for Automotive Research.

Her experience includes 20 years in the automotive industry and 12 years within BMW working in corporate sustainability, innovation management and long-term strategic and structural planning.

She began her career with BMW in Munich at corporate headquarters after completing the Bosch Foundation Fellowship Program.

Dickerson speaks fluent German and is also a fellow of the BMW Foundation Young Leaders Forum.

Dickerson serves as vice president of the multi-state Southern Automotive Women’s Forum and is a board member of the South Carolina Automotive Council.

The panelists include • Pamela Evette, owner and CEO of Quality Business Solutions. She brings more than 20 years of financial management, compliance and controller experiences and an entrepreneurial spirit to her role. She is a trained accountant and former CFO. • Denise Thigpen, owner and founder of Wholesale Boutique, distributor of the brand Viv&Lou, which specializes in trendy and affordable bags and accessories. A registered nurse, she began her multi-million-dollar enterprise with a $5,000 investment.

• Sherry McCraw, vice president of assembly for BMW Manufacturing. She has 25 years of leadership experience in engineering, planning and manufacturing at BMW. • Paige Simpson, purchasing manager for Itron, where she has worked for more than 25 years in various positions from production floor to sales analyst to procurement and logistics.
