T

he Midlands has long been known for its generous and giving nature. Folks in and around the capital city have always pitched in to help whenever called upon, whether it’s to build a new home for a lowincome family, raise money for shelters to protect victims of abuse, or assist in the aftermath of widespread disaster.

Steve McDaniel The nonprofit organizations and charities in the Columbia area could not do the great work they do were it not for the generous spirit of residents and businesses here. Events such as the Heart Walk, Midland Gives and Walk for Life illustrate the strength of that spirit and selflessness that defines this community.

This annual Giving Guide shines a light on those who lead many of the charitable efforts in the Midlands, the organizations that help make up the philanthropic community and the anonymous contributions of time, energy, money and talent that are poured into those efforts by so many individuals.

In this issue, you’ll find out about a new initiative aimed at helping children overcome

the devastating effects of neglect and abuse.

A grassroots effort, supported by a Nord Foundation grant, will partner area school districts with Midlands nonprofits on the project to support and raise awareness of this issue that affects a surprisingly large number of children.

We also examine some new, creative ways nonprofits are raising money, from making their own ice cream to starting a food truck, and how businesses are discovering the power of social networking as a way to connect their charitable projects with the public at large.

An area of concern for nonprofit groups around the country is the effect of new tax laws that raise the standard deduction for the majority of taxpayers. We talked to an area tax expert to see what these changes could mean for future contributions.

NATIONAL PHILANTHROPY DAY AWARDS T

he Association of Fundraising Professionals, Central South Carolina Chapter, is pleased to present annual awards to exemplary individuals, corporations and organizations that shape the Midlands through giving and volunteering. Through their passion for philanthropy, these award winners have improved the lives of Midlands residents in countless ways. The 2018 AFP, Central South Carolina Chapter, National Philanthropy Day award recipients are: OUTSTANDING CORPORATION THE BOEING CORPORATION

Since Boeing’s arrival in South Carolina 10 years ago, the company has expanded its philanthropic footprint throughout the state to play an active and leading role in South Carolina’s growth by harnessing its employees’ talents, the company’s partnerships, and its financial resources to inspire change and make positive impact.

This calendar year alone, Boeing has already contributed $5.3 million to S.C. nonprofits, benefiting Midlands organizations such as Project Lead the Way, the University of South Carolina School of Law Veterans Legal Clinic, and the SC State Museum’s Boeing Observatory. Numerically speaking, these gifts equate to hands-on STEAM learning for

12,000 students and 1,500 teachers; 175,000 student visitors to the Boeing Observatory, along with free teacher training and curriculum resources; and 127,000 free books distributed to underserved elementary students.

Legal services to veterans will be offered this year, as well.

Boeing has also impacted over 360,000 students and community partners since 2012 through its DreamLearners educational program, which invites students, teachers and other education professionals to the Boeing plant to learn about aerospace careers. The volunteer efforts of Boeing employees are also a powerful complement to the financial support the company provides. In rural Colleton County, Boeing’s employees partner with USC Salkehatchie and Tuskegee Airmen in an Aviation Camp to help 6th-8th graders learn about the history of flight and the excitement of aerospace.

Through the Employees Community Fund (ECF), now appropriately called the “Dollars for Doers” employee match program, Boeing will now match eligible charitable gifts made by employees up to $10,000, increasing the current cap from $6,000. A new team volunteer match program allows teams of Boeing employees to donate their time to nonprofit organizations, and, in exchange, the company

will provide a monetary gift to that organization currently valued at $10 per hour in 10hour increments of pro bono activity. Boeing SC employees are exceedingly generous with their time, talent and financial contributions and have given almost $1 million to nonprofit organizations and volunteered more than 8,000 times since 2011.

OUTSTANDING FUNDRAISER EXECUTIVE WENDY BRODERICK, YMCA OF COLUMBIA

As the Chief Development Officer of the YMCA of Columbia, Wendy Broderick plays an instrumental role in the growth and strategic development of the Y, ultimately empowering the Y to impact large-scale community change.

In her first year as Chief Development Officer, Broderick grew the Y’s Annual Campaign from $35,000 to $383,000 and started a planned giving society, the YMCA of Columbia Heritage Club. Under her leadership, the Y has secured significant support to address critical community needs like chronic disease prevention, childhood obesity and summer learning loss. Most recently, Broderick completed a Capital Campaign Feasibility Study for a new YMCA in Kershaw County.

Broderick is committed to strengthening the community through not only her dedicated and tireless service to the Y but also to other nonprofit organizations. She has served on many boards, including Sustainable Midlands, Greater Blythewood Chamber of Commerce (Past Chair), Blythewood Rotary Club (Past Chair), and Board of Directors and Advocates at Historic Columbia Foundation.

An advocate for youth development and healthy living, Broderick also is known for investing in others. She has mentored many through her time at the Y, and nothing brings her greater joy than to celebrate their success in career and life. Broderick is currently working with YMCA of the USA as a coach for its new Annual Campaign Cohort. She is also working with YMCAs on the East Coast with low capacity but big dreams to begin a fundraising program and is co-presenting a session at the 2019 NAYDO Conference titled “Small Shop, Big Dreams.”

Broderick received her Certificate in Fundraising Management from the Center of Philanthropy in 2010 and completed the University of South Carolina’s Grant Writing Certificate Program and her Certified Fundraising Executive Credential in 2016.

ON THE TABLE INITIATIVE SET FOR MIDLANDS

A

new effort to promote community improvement at the grassroots level is launching in the Midlands.

On the Table, a one-day series of hosted round-table discussions, will take place at various locations throughout the region in October. The concept is to bring together a diverse group of people who share a meal and their thoughts on the community at large or more specific topics that will hopefully foster ongoing conversations and actions to make Columbia an even better place to live.

It is funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation as part of a national initiative, and is being led locally by the Central Carolina Community Foundation.

“On the Table conversations are all about encouraging our residents to think about the issues they care about, who we are as a community, where we’re going, and what we can do to get there,” JoAnn Turnquist, president and CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation, said in a news release. “It’s about discovering how each of us can join together to make our region a better place to live. The more voices we hear, the better decisions we can make together.”

Each table host will convene and lead a conversation at the time and place of their choice across Richland and Lexington counties on Oct. 24, using a simple set of hosting guidelines provided by Central Carolina Community Foundation. On the Table provides a unique opportunity to share ideas and inspire action across a diverse group of community members.

Area residents, nonprofits, places of worship, businesses, and others can participate by hosting a small group table of six to 12 or by participating as a guest at someone else’s table.

Hosts have the flexibility to determine the invitation list (people they know or have not yet met) and location for their On the Table conversations, which can be held in homes, restaurants, parks, or community spaces at any time on Oct. 24 — breakfast, lunch, or dinnertime, before or after work, or late in the evening. Food can be provided by the host, or guests can purchase their own food, bring a brown bag, or contribute to a potluck.

The Foundation has provided a toolkit that includes hosting tips and suggested discussion questions that can be used. The host and participants can also select their own

topics, issues and ideas to discuss. The toolkit and other resources can be found at www.onthetablecola.org/resources.

Superhosts are organizations – nonprofits, places of worship, businesses, schools, civic organizations and other – that commit to hosting at least five tables, with six to 12 people per table. The goal is for hundreds of area residents, from all walks of life, ages, and backgrounds, to participate in conversations on Oct. 24 and beyond. While the first component of this initiative is to foster focused conversations at dining tables across our region, the end goal is to keep these conversations going and, ultimately, to increase the impact that individuals and groups have on the community when they work together.

The initiative has also been replicated nationally in more than 25 communities across the nation, including 12 cities also supported by Knight Foundation over the past two years, including Akron, Ohio; Charlotte, N.C.; Columbus, Ga.; Lexington, Ky.; and Miami.

Lizzie Smith has demonstrated a lifelong passion for promoting and supporting heart health efforts through the American Heart Association (AHA). As a young girl, Smith began volunteering and fundraising for the AHA, with her first award dating back to 2000, “Outstanding Little Heart.” Throughout her childhood, she won top fundraiser in 2004 after raising $11,507.50 and second-highest fundraiser in 2005 after raising $6,556. She has continued her involvement with the AHA during her college years as an intern in 2015. Smith took on a full-time position as the Executive Assistant in 2017.

During her college years her philanthropic characteristics were also evident through her involvement with her Kappa Delta Sorority. Smith has taken on the Auction Chair role during her time as an intern at AHA and through her sorority. As a survivor of a congenital heart defect and open-heart surgery at the age of 4, she truly lives the mission of the American Heart Association every day. Lizzie exuberates a special glow when telling her story and speaking with other survivors. Her commitment to her peers, the organization and the volunteers is a benefit to all in the Midlands.

OUTSTANDING MARKETING PROFESSIONAL IN SUPPORT OF PHILANTHROPY NIMAI GARRETT, ALLEN UNIVERSITY

Nimai Garrett has transformed alumni giving at Allen University through his web skills and marketing campaigns. Originally the Director of Alumni Affairs, Garrett’s graphic design skills earned him

an additional assignment as Webmaster and a charge to redesign the University website.

Over an eight-month period, Garrett worked with a vendor to completely overhaul the AU website, and change it from one focused on student recruitment to one that currently highlights what life is like at Allen, with new appeals for prospective donors throughout. He discussed and contributed graphics, arranged for all video and photo shoots, and served as a liaison between the vendor and various campus constituent groups, including the President, throughout the process. This past year, Garrett also worked with a company to create the first Alumni Directory in nearly 15 years with nearly 1,000 entries for a school that averages 70-85 graduates annually.

When alumni decided that they wanted football after a 14year absence, Nimai designed the funding appeal at each step of the process. Consequently, more than $600,000 was raised in less than a year to fund the initiative without the need for a single dime from the university. When the university announced that a marching band would be created to accompany the football team after a 50-year absence, Garrett’s subsequent campaign resulted in more than $87,000 in band uniforms being paid for by donors in seven months, with the largest single donation at $30,000.

Garrett’s efforts helped to establish nine new $10,000 endowed scholarships (seven related to alumni) in FY2017-18. One family responded to our new 3 Days of Giving appeal (designed by Garrett) by creating a law school preparation endowed scholarship program for $125,000. His efforts helped increase alumni giving from $53,000 in FY2016-17 to more than $96,000 in FY2017-18, an increase of 46%.

TECHNOLOGY CONTINUES TO TRANSFORM HOW AND WHAT WE GIVE

T

he philanthropic landscape and the way donors perceive and approach giving has evolved tremendously since Central Carolina Community Foundation was founded in 1984.

Transparency, technology, and evolving attitudes toward wealth are reshaping donors’ approaches to giving. Philanthropy has become more results-focused for many donors. According to a 2016 report from Fidelity Charitable, 41 percent of donors say they have changed their giving due to increased knowledge about nonprofit effectiveness.

The unprecedented growth of online and social methods of charitable giving is also driving change. In fact, 27 percent of donors say their approach to giving has changed due to technological advances that provide convenient tools for researching and funding charitable projects and organizations.

Millennials are the driving force behind these changes. They are not driven by an at-

tachment to particular organizations or institutions. Instead, they are passionate about specific causes and helping people. That's one reason millennials want nonprofits to provide solid evidence that their giving has an impact. They want regular updates about successful projects and programs. They want to know who they have helped.

Blackbaud’s annual Giving Report reveals that nearly 17 percent of online donations were made on a mobile device in 2016.

That’s not a surprise given that millennials grew up using smart phones, laptops, and tablets. For them, constant connectedness is a fact of life. They rely on social media, websites and search engines, and instant access to mobile technology.

Our foundation is addressing these trends as our donors – of all ages – are seeking more information about the nonprofits they wish to support. Our team researches every nonprofit before a grant is issued and meets regularly with organizations across our

11-county region to learn what impact our donors’ grant dollars have had. We provide an online research tool, our Midlands Gives website, where donors can review hundreds of nonprofit profiles and make a gift on their phone, laptop or computer.

We are also providing updates and impact reports about funds housed at our foundation. The thousands of donations made to the One SC Fund, for example, have provided over $3.6 million in grants to nonprofits to support disaster recovery projects and help more than 1,740 families return home. When donors understand that they have made a difference, they are willing to give again – a comforting thought to those in need.

The philanthropic landscape will continue to evolve but one factor will remain constant – people of all ages want to make a difference in the world.

INVESTING TIME, TALENT AND TREASURE IN THE MIDLANDS

T

hough the expression “giving of your time, talent and treasure” is now a common expression among those doing philanthropic work, it indeed conveys the breadth of what philanthropy can mean and be. Taking such a broader view helps in building a stronger and better community here in the Midlands.

As local leaders of the internationally based Association of Fundraising Professionals Central South Carolina Chapter, we are privileged to be working in a community that is breaking barriers when it comes to philanthropy by reaching far beyond financial support by including volunteering, mentorship and leadership as significant forms of giving.

The Midlands has quickly become a community recognized for its strong collaborations of leaders and community members who think outside of the box to connect the dots and make things happen, supporting one another and transforming Columbia into a better place to live, work and recreate. We are fortunate to live and work in a community that encourages people to get involved in philanthropy to build a stronger and more vibrant Midlands.

Whether people donate their time, talent or treasure, research indicates people are motivated to give for a variety of reasons that include simply the satisfaction of helping

others, inspiring friends and colleagues, promoting a spirit of philanthropy within family, and improving personal finances by reducing taxable income. Other donors may be more intrinsically motivated to donate and benefit from a boost in their self-esteem or to achieve a greater sense of purpose.

Furthermore, a trend now surfacing in philanthropy is the differences in generational giving. A recent study conducted by Campbell & Co. found that the millennial generation is more likely to give in order to make the world a better place; the baby boomer generation’s gifts are often directed toward making the community a better place for everyone to live.

An example here in the Midlands is the recent opening of the Mental Illness Recovery Center Inc. (MIRCI), the new youth home for young men at risk or who are experiencing homelessness. The Leadership Class of 2018 partnered with MIRCI and invested physical labor and time to raise additional funding support to raise nearly $50,000 in goods and services to complete the new youth home.

platforms, illustrates that trend. Based on analyzing trends in fundraising revenue in 2017, the report found that overall giving increased by 4.1% during the year, a substantial jump compared to relatively flat growth in 2017. The 2017 Charitable Giving Report found that a strong stock market, spikes in giving in response to political issues, and the continued shift to digital giving all positively influenced giving in 2017.

This growth was also fueled by a 5.1% increase in giving during the final three months of 2017. As fundraisers, we are optimistic this growth will continue and the Midlands will become an even stronger community as a result of the investment of time, talent and treasure.

In today’s world, anyone can be a philanthropist. Some people think it requires great wealth. That’s simply not true; anyone can be an everyday philanthropist no matter your financial situation or your stage in life. With so many ways to give back, the question you might ask yourself is, “How will I give back to the Midlands?”

FROM FLOOD RECOVERY TO YOUTH IN TRANSITION

T

hree years have passed since the 2015 flood that devastated much of our community and displaced thousands of people. Since then, we have been working with more than 50 partners to restore and rebuild our community thanks to the support of thousands of donors and volunteers from the Midlands and beyond.

More than $2.3 million was contributed by donors from 40 states and three countries around the world. United Way pledged to direct 100% of flood donations to projects relieving the suffering caused by the storm. Our focus has been on repairing housing owned and occupied by seniors and those with low income through partnerships with local and national organizations skilled in home repair.

From the beginning, United Way pledged to keep our community and the people who contributed to the recovery informed of our efforts. Now that the federal dollars have finally arrived and the last of the donations we’ve raised have been spent, we wanted to give you a full report on our accomplishments: 255 homes repaired and more than

200,000 volunteer hours contributed. None of this would have been possible without your generosity.

The Midlands has proven, time and again, to be a caring community that can accomplish amazing things when we work together to achieve a common goal. While the Midlands may have been spared the brunt of Hurricane Florence, natural disasters are not the only causes of housing instability in our community.

United Way of the Midlands formed the Youth in Transition Initiative to focus on young people, ages 17 to 24, who are homeless or vulnerable to homelessness or are at risk for other poor outcomes due to a lack of social and financial support. This includes youth transitioning out of foster care or juvenile or adult justice, runaway youth, unaccompanied youth or other youth who fall through the cracks in our system of care.

When the movement started, just two agencies were providing housing with services to youth in Richland and Lexington counties. In 2017, 329 young people between the ages of 18-24 received services or hous-

ing, a 146% increase compared to 2014. In the last three years, there has been a dramatic expansion of housing and services, including implementing youth-specific street outreach, 78 new units of shelter and housing for youth, and opening a youth drop-in center. But there is still work to be done.

We need to make our community into a safe, trauma-resilient place for our youth. We need make it easier for them to navigate the service system and access resources, prevent them from becoming homeless, and equip them for stable employment and long-term financial stability.

NONPROFITS FIND UNIQUE WAYS TO RAISE MONEY

uppose you could support a favorite nonprofit by buying a pint of delicious ice cream? Or raise funds for another charitable organization by eating a gourmet taco for breakfast or lunch?

In the Midlands, you can do either or both.

And there’s even a name for the movement: social enterprise.

“Nonprofits are creating a separate business, with 100% of the profits going to the organization,” said Bridget Winston, director of development for Senior Resources. Goodwill Industries is a prime example of this model, but other organizations are joining the movement.

Senior Resources Executive Director Pam Dukes heard about the idea at the annual Meals on Wheels conference. The nonprofit immediately began looking into it. They settled on the food truck idea and a staff member from San Antonio, Texas, happened to mention there was no place in Columbia to get a good breakfast taco.

And so, Señor Resources was born. “We like that the food truck’s meals on wheels supports our Meals on Wheels,” Winston said, noting that it naturally connects Senior Resources with

Meals on Wheels in people’s minds.

One of Senior Resources’ major programs is Meals on Wheels, a food delivery and visitation service for senior citizens in the Midlands. The organization was renovating its building to bring the Meals on Wheels main distribution site back into the facility, so the building would be Department of Health and Environmental Control compliant and could also serve the food truck’s needs.

“The stars were aligning,” Winston explained.

Señor Resources was launched in April.

The food truck will go wherever invited, to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner. On the menu are a Southwest breakfast burrito, chipotle shrimp tacos and sopapillas, among many other choices.

The truck is operated by a food truck manager with paid staff, and interested customers can find out where it will be each day on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

These business endeavors are far from the only ones that provide a different way of giving to nonprofits.

Transitions, which helps find solutions for

homeless adults, turned to the Soda City Duck Pluck for the first time this year. The initial idea was to have a Duck Race on the Congaree River, with donors “adopting” ducks at $5 each and the winning duck’s owner receiving a cash prize.

Hurricane Florence interfered, causing the river to rise too high for a race. Instead, the organizers set up an above-ground pool at Stone River event space in West Columbia. Some young students were enlisted to get in the pool and “pluck” out the winners. The revised event raised $15,000 to help Columbia’s homeless.

“All of the adoption fees come to us as the charity,” said Elizabeth Igleheart, vice president for advancement at Transitions. The costs of the event and the prizes – for three winners — were covered by event sponsors. NextHome Specialists partnered with Transitions to put on the Duck Pluck.

“It’s such an affordable fundraiser,” Igleheart said. Transitions has other fundraisers that are at higher price points, but this one was affordable for a wide range of people. Having learned the logistics of the river, they will be looking for another water location for next year’s event.

ust across Millwood Avenue from Senior Resources is the Epworth Children’s Home, the beneficiary of another social enterprise, the Epworth Ice Cream Co. “This ice cream is indulgence meeting benevolence,” said Dave Mackey, ice cream company president. “It is rare when a treat can be used to generate good.”

All profits from the sale of the ice cream go to Epworth Children’s Home.

The children’s home was founded in 1895 to provide live-in care for children and families in crisis. The original Epworth Ice Cream recipe — peanut butter ice cream — was created when the U.S. government sent peanut butter to the home as a nutrition source during the Great Depression. Epworth had a working dairy that provided income for the school, so it was natural to combine the peanut butter with cream to make ice cream for the children.

The Friends of Epworth, a group of busi-

ness leaders raising funds for the children’s home, decided to establish the separate, forprofit ice cream company to supplement other donation sources, Mackey said. He joined the company in September.

“Rather than continue to ask donors for money, seek grants and rely on churches, they (Friends of Epworth) wanted to build a business that would generate profits for the home,” Mackey said.

Andrew Boozer, vice president of development at Epworth, expanded on that thought. “The proceeds donated will be used to support our mission and give us a continued revenue source,” he said. “We want to provide a place where we can help the children stay on track to complete high school.” About 80 children, most of them teenagers, live at Epworth.

The ice cream is made at Greenwood Ice Cream, an artisanal dairy in Atlanta that specializes in small batches. The peanut butter recipe is unique to Epworth; other flavors

— vanilla bean, vanilla-chocolate swirl with peanut butter cups and caramel with caramelfilled chocolates — are a collaboration between Epworth and Greenwood.

The ice cream is available at a few stores in Columbia. Some churches have held special sales, and individual-serving cups are sold at events. The goal is to take it statewide by the end of the year, eventually forming a regional brand to generate significant profit, Mackey said.

FLIPPING FOR A GOOD CAUSE

A

cross town, what started out as a simple house renovation project blossomed into Flip & Give, a home remodeling and sale that will benefit a charity to be selected by the public.

Graeme Moore and Justin Drafts of The Moore Co. real estate and management firm had purchased a house in the neighborhood. When they decided to renovate and sell the house, they began posting their ideas on social media.

“It was fascinating to see that many people had an interest in what we were doing,” Moore said. They decided to let the public have input into design choices, and then someone suggested that the company give some of the profit to charity.

“We loved that idea, and that snowballed into ‘Let’s just give it all away and make a big production and try to really make an impact in the community where it’s needed.’ ” Online voters from the public have selected such design options as bathroom tile, roof shingles and kitchen cabinet colors. Soon they will select the local charity that will benefit.

Services and materials are all being donated, and the renovated house is expected to sell for $500,000. About half that will go to the designated charity.

There’s a lot of power in a group of people pooling their time, talents and treasure. Giving circles in the Midlands are proving that.

Two examples are COLA Gives and Women Engaged.

COLA Gives got started when a group of men and women who had retired to the Columbia area from other places saw needs that were not being met. These were things that didn’t require a lot of money — badges for a Boy Scout troop, music stands for a church orchestra.

“Five or six of us got together and talked about how we could help,” said Jackie Griffin, the group’s president. And COLA Gives was born in 2013. Although it looks like the trendy nickname for Columbia, COLA stands for A Community Organized to Leverage Assets.

There are 14 members, each paying $100 in dues a year. This allows them to make minigrants to organizations that need just a little bit of help. They focus on helping the AfricanAmerican community.

“We’re not rocking-chair material,” Griffin said. “Whatever city we came from, we were all doing this.” Most of the original members moved here from Connecticut, but others came from Ohio, Virginia, California.

COLA Gives has obtained nonprofit status. This year, the group raised some additional funds through Midlands Gives, which will allow them to increase their minigrants from five or six yearly to 10 to 15.

Also focusing on the African-American community is Women Engaged, founded by Anita Garrett in 2017. Women Engaged is a giving circle focused on resource development for African-American communities and causes across South Carolina.

Women Engaged works with events as well as philanthropy to raise awareness in the community. WE concentrates on educating others on economic empowerment and leveraging their donations.

NEW LAWS WILL CHANGE IMPACT OF CHARITABLE DONATIONS ON TAX BILL FOR MANY PEOPLE

he world of philanthropy is waiting to see what the impact of income tax reform will be on giving by individual taxpayers.

As standard deductions have been substantially increased, many taxpayers will no longer need to itemize deductions, including charitable contributions. To a person who made gifts to help reduce his tax bill, the incentive to make charitable donations goes away.

“A lot of people will give the same,” predicts Mark Hobbs, CPA, CFF and CGMA, managing shareholder of The Hobbs Group PA in Columbia.

To help explain, Hobbs gave three hypothetical cases of taxpayers’ deductions and tax savings under both the 2017 and the 2018

tax laws. Only one of the three would save on taxes for 2018 by making charitable contributions at the same level as 2017.

In the first example, a couple had $415,856 in adjusted gross income. They made charitable donations of $19,020 in both years. In 2017 their total itemized deductions were $57,841, but because of tax law changes the total deductions are predicted at $37,808 for 2018. The latter figure was still higher than the new standard deduction of $24,000 for the couple, so it still will be advantageous to itemize.

Their federal tax for 2017 was $100,668.

With the same figures for 2018, the federal tax is expected to be $82,494. Their savings from the charitable donations in 2017 was $7,608 but in 2018 the savings from the same

total donations would be $5,523.

“The high-income couple will probably give anyway,” Hobbs said. “The tax change hurt this couple by $2,085 (difference between $7,608 and $5,523). But they have disposable income.”

In another hypothetical case, a single retired taxpayer has income of $112,157. In both years, charitable contributions total $5,676. In 2017, the total itemized deductions were $12,490 and the standard deduction was $7,900, so the itemized deductions were used, for a tax savings of $1,468.90 in the appropriate tax bracket. In 2018, the itemized deductions are the same, but the standardized deduction goes up to $13,600. This taxpayer will not itemize, and the savings from charitable

Total federal taxes calculated for this taxpayer are $18,817 in 2017; $17,190 for 2018.

“This taxpayer can keep the charitable contributions and pay less tax as a result of the higher standard deduction,” Hobbs said.

In a third hypothetical case, a married couple filing jointly has income of $115,013 in both years. They are also retired; their age range gives them additional standard deduction amounts of $2,600 ($1,300 each).

Their contributions in both 2017 and 2018 are $5,925. In 2017 their total itemized deductions were $17,970 versus a standard deduction of $15,200, so it was advantageous to itemize. Their total federal tax was $13,709 and they had a tax savings of $886.40 because of their contributions.

In 2018, their standard deduction goes up to $26,600, considerably higher than the $17,142 total itemized deductions. They would be projected to pay $11,330 in federal taxes with no savings due to charitable contributions.

This couple could also keep the donations they had been making and still pay less tax.

dard deduction cut the complexity of tax records and simplify tax filing, Hobbs said.

“People will pay less tax and they don’t have to keep as many records.”

He predicts that, especially in the generous Midlands, a lot of people will continue to give the same amounts.

His accounting firm works with a number of charitable organizations.

“Nonprofits are holding their breath. They hope people will keep giving,” Hobbs said.

The Central Carolina Community Foundation’s blog has some suggestions for donors at higher income levels. They can donate stocks, which usually provide more value than if the owner sold them, paid taxes and then gave the cash balance.

A person or family can also establish a Donor Advised Fund at a level higher than their standard deduction, which allows them to save on the tax bill in the year the donation is made.

Then in the years following, the donor can gift from that fund to chosen charities.

Hobbs says that 95% of people will pay less taxes for 2018. “The rates went down and the standard deduction is going up,” he said.

HELPING CHILDREN FIGHT THE STRESS OF ADVERSE EXPERIENCES

C

hildren who undergo traumatic stress may misbehave or develop health problems. But those are far from the only consequences, according to research.

Those who undergo adverse child experiences, known as ACEs, can be affected long into adulthood. The toxic effects of stress on the brain can lead to long-term effects on mental and physical health, as well as risky behavior.

In one Midlands county, a huge team of nonprofit leaders, medical professionals, social service agencies, educators and researchers are tackling the problem head-on. Meet Resilient Richland, which will have its official launch on Nov. 1.

“We’re looking at the system, at what it would take,” said Anita Floyd, senior vice president for community impact and strategic implementation at United Way of the Midlands. Richland County was chosen for the first project because it has so many agencies ready to get involved.

The Children’s Trust of South Carolina is a major player and the public defender’s office is involved, as well as the Department of Juvenile Justice. The planning committee includes representatives from all Richland school districts, law enforcement, Columbia City Council, USC, health care and social services agencies and the Richland Library.

“There’s so much momentum here,” said Aditi Srivastav Bussells, Children’s Trust research and community impact manager.

Resilient Richland will enlist everyone who deals with children and youth to help prevent ACEs from happening and, when they do, to prevent long-term impacts.

ACEs are defined as traumatic experiences that occur in a child’s life prior to the age of 18, including emotional, physical and sexual abuse; domestic violence; substance use and mental illness in the household; separation from parents from such causes as incarceration and divorce; food insecurity; and homelessness. Even when these experiences do occur, children can be

helped through them by learning ways to be resilient, Floyd said.

In Richland County, the problem is large.

Children’s Trust research at the county level has found that 67% of residents report ACEs, with the most common being emotional abuse, parental divorce/separation and household substance use. The county’s average yearly cost resulting from ACEs, including health care costs, productivity losses, child welfare, criminal justice and special education, is estimated at $173.7 million.

This data was collected through the S.C. Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System in 2014-16, managed locally by the S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control.

The Resilient Richland project had its roots at United Way in working with homeless youth, Floyd said. Many of the young people were homeless because of trauma, and they were vulnerable to more trauma. United Way of the Midlands received funding from the Nord Family Foundation and Robert

After presenting programs, including two films focusing on ACEs and their treatment (“Paper Tigers” and “Resilience”), a meeting of the agencies was convened. With the reaction strongly positive, consultants were brought in for retreats and surveys were taken.

“We ended up with three areas to start with,” Floyd said. First is building community awareness of the problem and the need to help children. The second is training adults who work with children.

The Children’s Trust was already well on the way with the initiative, Bussells said. Research had been done on ACEs statewide, and the agency was able to produce data by community and county. This is very rare to have, she said. That effort has been assisted by an investment by BlueCross BlueShield Foundation of South Carolina.

The Children’s Trust has 75 master trainers who use a curriculum created by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to teach adults to recognize childhood trauma and help those who have experienced it.

“We hope to build a training program that is adapted to each site,” said Dr. Richard Kagan, a

consultant and nationally known expert on traumatic experiences of children and families. “We want everyone in the school... to be operating with the same understanding of how trauma affects the behavior of children.”

The third part of the plan is a pilot project, to build a team for a specific community bringing in all the partners needed, Floyd said. That will take time and will need to be tailored to the particular community’s needs.

For now, making the community aware of ACEs is receiving attention.

“We want to make people aware of the impact of trauma on the brain of a child and the brains of adults who care about them,” Kagan said. “We need to get across what has been shown to help . . . Trauma affects the bodies and brains of our children and families.”

The ultimate goal, Bussells said, is that every child, every family, every individual in Richland County get the same opportunity to be the best they can be. Traumatic experience can be intergenerational, and breaking that cycle is important. “We want to prevent bad experiences from happening, and to prevent bad experiences from having a longterm effect.”

As the elderly population continues to grow, demand for our services is outpacing our funding sources. We currently have a waiting list for Meals on Wheels and Home Care.

We are working to engage new donors and solicit additional sources of revenue to meet the growing needs in our community. Senior Resources is the sole provider of Meals on Wheels in Richland County.

A CLOSER LOOK: 2018 TOP ACHIEVEMENTS: In early 2018, we renovated our building to construct a new Meals on Wheels site. We currently serve about 250 hot meals each day and 800 frozen meals each week from that site. The space also includes our Senior Care Pantry and Pet Pals programs in the facility. It also includes a walk-in freezer that will allow us to grow our frozen meal delivery service to seniors who live in remote areas.

• In 2018, we also launched our food truck, Señor Resources, as a social enterprise.

Proceeds from the food truck support our mission. It’s meals on wheels supporting Meals on Wheels.

• We were able to serve 169,381 hot and frozen meals to 1,015 Meals on Wheels clients in FY2018. At our four Wellness Centers, we served 13,691 meals to 153 attendees, and also provided 558 hours of physical fitness classes and 122,000 miles of transportation for those who needed it.

We also provided more than 10,000 hours of home care to home-bound seniors.

2019 GOALS: In 2019, we plan to begin offering more menu choices to our meal clients. We're starting with our Wellness centers and will expand to Meals on Wheels clients. Wellness center clients, who are served a hot meal each day that they attend, will have a choice of two different entrees with sides. We are confident that providing greater menu choices will further improve quality of life and promote dignity for our clients. It will also improve their nutrition and reduce food waste in our program.

The Senior Care Pantry provides non-perishable foods, toiletries and household items to those on our waiting lists. Home Works provides free home repairs to qualifying homeowners during scheduled workdays and summer sessions. In 2018, we held week-long summer sessions in Fayetteville, NC; Johns Island, SC; Greenville, SC; and Aiken, SC and — new this year — Lake City, SC. More than 50 volunteers from Virginia joined us in Lake City for our inaugural session and repaired four homes.

• Development of the Health Works Program – an internal Home Works program that partners with local hospitals to reduce readmissions and emergency room visits due to the challenges of the patients’ living conditions.

• Home Works relies on the generous service of volunteers ages 12 and up. We have volunteers from local businesses, high schools, church youth groups, civic groups and fitness clubs to name a few. We are so grateful for volunteers who help us hammer hope home in our community. Our volunteers have doubled in number from 2017 to 2018.

2019 GOALS: Home Works desires to grow the Health Works component of its mission to help regional hospital systems combat readmission rates and mitigate emergency department visits due to poor home environmental health. We hope to continue to increase the number of homes repaired in our state, helping to ease the affordable housing crisis facing our state’s major metropolitan areas while making a difference in the lives of residents in our communities. • Our Warm the Winter campaign resulted in 80+ hats, gloves and scarves being delivered by police across six Midlands departments to people experiencing homelessness.

• We partnered with 11 departments across 6 counties to deliver water to people in need during the summer heat.

• We facilitated the Daddy and Me 5K, a vision of Chief Kevin Cornett of the Springdale Police Department, which celebrated the role of fathers in families and raised money for the Midlands Fatherhood Coalition. In the inaugural year, the event raised $12,444.

2019 GOALS: Our strategic goals for the next year focus on enhanced reached throughout South Carolina, including: • Implement our Compassionate Acts Programming, which provides new opportunities for police and community to interact, in 12 new jurisdictions throughout the state of South Carolina.

• Facilitate greater collaboration between law enforcement and the mental health community.

• Implement an intensive collaborative policing effort in Columbia’s 29203 zip code as a strategy for promoting positive

youth outcomes.

• Implement the first-annual Courageous Conversations event which invites diverse voices into the discussion of how to elevate police and community relationships statewide. The first event will be held in the Midlands in April 2019 and will focus on race relations.

A CLOSER LOOK: 2018 TOP ACHIEVEMENTS: Communities In Schools of the Midlands focuses on helping to improve student success by providing needed support and services. Our goal is to improve graduation rates by supporting youth in academic achievement, post-secondary school readiness, reinforcing positive behavior, and connecting students and families with community resources. With this in mind, one of our goals has been to create feeder patterns between elementary, middle, and high schools. This approach provides support for students from elementary school throughout high school and into adulthood. Additionally, the feeder pattern helps to ensure a smooth transition for students moving to the next school level. Since 2014 we have provided services for students by partnering with Herbert A. Wood Elementary School in Lexington School District Two. For the 2018/19 school year we were able to expand our reach within the district to Pine Ridge Middle School. This allows us to provide continued support for many of the same students from Herbert A. Wood Elementary, as well as support students who were already enrolled at Pine Ridge.

2019 GOALS: Communities In Schools of the Midlands brings community resources into schools to empower success for all students by: • Removing barriers for vulnerable students at risk of dropping out • Helping to keep students in school and on the path to graduation • Leveraging evidence, relationships and local resources to drive results • Our goal for 2019 is to increase our service reach within Richland and Lexington Counties, and expand into another county in the Midlands.

• United Way strives to have children ready for school, reading by third grade and involved in programs and services that maintain and improve academic success.

• 3,645 parents demonstrated increased knowledge about their children’s development through school readiness and parent engagement programs • More than 500 children were tutored through United Way’s Midlands Reading Consortium program.

• 2,800 students participated in quality in- and out-of-school time programs; another 1,400 students participated in summer slide reading programs.

• Supported programs placed 1,300 people experiencing homelessness into housing. UWM leveraged more than $13 million in additional resources to provide housing and help to people experiencing homelessness. United Way also helped increase income for 862 people through new benefits or employment.

• United Way and hospital partners established WellPartners to serve Richland, Lexington and Fairfield counties. Services include eye and dental care for adults and dental care for children. Among those helped were 1,426 people who received eye care services and/or corrective lenses, 4,224 adults who had their dental needs met, and 886 children who had their dental needs met.

• In October 2015, South Carolina experienced a “1,000-Year Flood.” Since October 2015, volunteers have provided more than 200,000 hours in service related to disaster response or recovery.
