Welcome
Message from the CEO Welcome to Irmo, South Carolina! I hope you’ll enjoy exploring and learning more about the Town of Irmo. I became the president and CEO of the Greater Irmo Chamber in July 2015 and since then I have learned that Irmo’s greatest asset is its people! Irmo is famous for the Annual Okra Strut Festival, where residents and visitors from all around gather to celebrate all that is Irmo with fun, food, music, games and...of course…lots of okra! One of the crown jewels of Irmo is our schools. We’ve made education a priority here, and Lexington Richland School District Five is an award-winning school district that is continually ranked as one of the top districts in the state. Our quality of life stands above the rest. We have the beautiful and picturesque Irmo Town Park right across the street from the Chamber, and Irmo Community Park is a fantastic place to enjoy a play date with your children, a family picnic, a nice walk and even an outdoor concert at the amphitheater. The surrounding area parks offer access to local rivers and, being a lakeside community, Irmo is a gateway to Lake Murray! If the outdoors aren’t your cup of tea, Irmo also boasts some of the best dining, shopping and entertainment in the area! Irmo is a special place and I‘d love to help you discover more about our town. I invite you to stop by our office anytime to say hello, meet the staff and get more information about our town and our chamber members. Kerry Powers President & CEO

What makes Irmo special
Many things make Irmo a special place W
hat makes Irmo special? There are so many things. You can kayak on the scenic Saluda River from Saluda Shoals Park. Shop for the latest fashions at Columbiana Centre. Enjoy a professional or community performance at Midlands Tech’s Harbison Theatre. And that’s just a start. Here are some of our very special events and places: Okra Strut: The Lexington Medical Center Irmo Okra Strut has provided family fun for the Town of Irmo and neighboring counties since the early 1970s. The festival was primarily set up as a fundraiser for the Lake Murray-Irmo Woman’s Club in 1974, with the goal to build a new library for the Irmo community. Now a nationally known event, the “Strut” keeps the traditions of street fairs of old. Nestled into its new permanent home in the Community Park of Irmo, the Okra Strut features a street dance, parade, arts and crafts, rides and amusements, petting zoo, and lots of festival food. Held in the fall, the event kicks off on Friday evening with the street dance and Okra Eating Contest. On Saturday morning the second largest parade in South Carolina leads off with floats and entries from around the state. Amusements and rides provide hours of entertainment while vendors ply their wares.
Columbiana Centre: While the area in and around Irmo has changed substantially since 1990, one constant is the presence of one of the most dynamic shopping centers in the state. “We’ve reached a point where we are consistently the first choice for retailers entering the Midlands,” said Columbiana Centre General Manager Andrew Peach. “Retailers recognize that we have the strongest demographics, the best mix of co-tenants and great customer loyalty — all of the things they are looking for when they open a new location.” An affirmation of Peach’s statement is the lineup of first-to-market, exclusive retailers at the mall. Aldo, Altar’d State, Banana Republic, bareMinerals, bebe, BuildA-Bear Workshop, Charming Charlie, Coach, Forever 21, Hollister Co., Michael Kors, PANDORA, Sephora, Vans, White House|Black Market, Williams-Sonoma and Zumiez all have their only Columbia location at Columbiana Centre. Amenities and events enhance the shopping experience at Columbiana. www.GreaterIrmoChamber.com

What makes Irmo special From the carousel and family events to blood drives, animal adoption events and celebrity appearances, the mall stays busy. Harbison Theatre at Midlands Tech: Rooted in the performing arts, Harbison Theatre at Midlands Technical College offers programs and productions that provide entertainment, education and opportunity to professionals, learners and community members. The 400-seat, state-of-the-art facility is best known for its Signature Series, a lineup of professional touring companies representing the country’s best in music, dance, theatre, comedy and more. Famous names such as Mavis Staples, The Second City, Kathleen Madigan, Pilobolus, and The Texas Tenors regularly hit the stage. The series also includes Pops performances by the South Carolina Philharmonic. The theater is also recognized for the HT@MTC Performance Incubator, which enables professional performers residing in the Midlands to create sustainable careers through the production of new work suitable for touring.
Saluda Shoals Park: Saluda Shoals Park is a premier natural, environmentally sensitive riverfront park that invites visitors to experience the treasures of the Saluda River through exceptional educational, recreational and cultural opportunities. Located along the banks of the beautiful Saluda River, this 400-acre regional park offers an 11,000-squarefoot Environmental Education Center and Exhibit Hall and the 10,000 square-foot state-of-the-art conference facility, the River Center. For more casual recreation, the park has paved and unpaved trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding; a river observation deck and picnic shelters; a boat ramp and canoe/kayak launch; playground and Saluda Splash (open during warmer months). The park also houses the administrative offices of the Irmo Chapin Recreation Commission. Community Park: Irmo opened its new Community Park in late 2013. The park, home to the Okra Strut, is a great place for families to enjoy the outdoors. It features an amphitheater, two playgrounds and a nature trail on 14 acres. Located on Eastview Road, it is the town’s second park.

Excellence in education
L
exington-Richland School District Five is committed to excellence in academics, the arts, athletics, leadership and community service.
Excellence in academics is the district’s main focus. District Five consistently receives an “A” rating under the federal accountability system and an “Excellent” rating on the state report card. Despite tougher standards, district schools continue to be recognized as Palmetto Gold and Silver award winners for academic performance and closing the achievement gap. District 5 students are state leaders on both the SAT and ACT examinations. This is especially significant because the district is a leader in the
percentage of students who take these examinations. Graduating classes earn millions in academic and athletic scholarship offers annually, and the district boasts individual student accomplishments with many Carolina Scholars and National Merit Scholars each year. In March 2016, two District Five schools were finalists for the prestigious Palmetto’s Finest Award. And District Five was just honored as a first place winner in the 22nd annual Magna Awards program sponsored by the National School Boards Association. The Magna Award is a national recognition program that honors school board best practices and innovative programs that advance student learning. shine with state championships in several sports, and its students earn top prizes in band, chorus and the performing arts. The district also offers unique programs and educational opportunities. For the second year in a row, the district received a $100,000 federal Farm to School grant to provide educational opportunities for students and teachers while incorporating more local foods into district cafeterias. This year, students, teachers and parents also demonstrated their community service by donating more than $900,000 in contributions and volunteer hours to community charitable causes. District Five takes pride in being a school system “Where Every Choice is a Great Choice.” Choice offerings have been expanded and fami-
lies can choose from most schools in the district regardless of school zone. This approach helps ensure that each student can find the learning environment that best fits his or her needs and provides the very best opportunity for success. Making improvements to school facilities is a constant, and major renovations have reshaped campuses all across the district. A five-year technology plan has included major improvements to the technology infrastructure, district-issued iPad minis for all high school students, Chromebooks for all middle school students and plans for oneto-one computing for elementary school students. District Five truly embodies its motto: “Pursuing Excellence for Tomorrow’s Challenges.”

I
rmo’s medical and health care needs are well served by two award-winning hospital systems in the Midlands: Lexington Medical Center and Palmetto Health. Lexington Medical Center, a 414-bed hospital in West Columbia, anchors a comprehensive medical network that includes six community medical centers throughout the county and employs a staff of 6,000 health care professionals. The network includes comprehensive cardiovascular and oncology care affiliated with Duke Health, an occupational health center, the largest skilled nursing facility in the Carolinas and approximately 60 physician practices. Lexington Medical Center delivers more babies than any other hospital in the Midlands, and readers of The State newspaper have named the hospital “Best Place to Have a Baby” for consecutive years. It performs more than 21,000 surgeries each year and operates the second busiest emergency depart-
ment in South Carolina, treating more than 105,000 patients each year. At the Midlands’ only Duke Health-affiliated comprehensive cardiovascular program, patients have access to the latest treatments and protocols medicine has to offer with close-to-home convenience. In addition to open heart surgery and angioplasty, Lexington Medical Center offers transcatheter aortic valve replacement, known as TAVR, and is part of an elite group of 20 hospitals across the United States and the only hospital in the state participating in a National Institutes of Health study on “trans-caval” aortic valve replacement. These state-of-theart cardiovascular technologies allow doctors to replace the aortic valve without open heart surgery. The cardiology team also offers catheter ablation, a non-surgical, electrophysiology procedure to treat cardiac arrhythmias. I
rmo Police Department is an accredited agency of 25 officers serving a community of about 12,000 people.
By South Carolina standards, the Irmo Police Department is a medium to large agency. The department offers several different programs to keep the lines of communication open between the department and the community. Officers are on patrol 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Irmo Police Department participates in the nationwide E911 program and emergency services are available by dialing 911. The Irmo Police Department sponsors a Law Enforcement Explorer post through the Boy Scouts of America. This program allows young people ages 13 to 19 with an interest in being a police officer to learn about law enforcement from officers within the department. John Hendricks and he can be reached at 803-781-8088. Also offered by the Irmo Police Department is a
program for our senior citizens called Serving Our Seniors (SOS). We offer educational programs throughout the year about avoiding scams, crime prevention and weather preparedness. We also contact program participants if we have advanced notice of inclement weather. If you would like to participate in the SOS program, contact the department at 803-781-8088 or if you have any questions about the SOS program, call Sgt. Andrea Grinstead, who heads up the SOS program. Finally, we offer house checks for citizens who are away on vacation, fingerprinting services to citizens who are required to have their fingerprints taken for occupational reasons (teachers, stock brokers) and child safety seat inspections. All of these services are free to community members who live in the town limits. To arrange any of those services, call the department at 803-781-8088. Officers of the department are available to speak to civic groups and neighborhood associations. Contact the administrative office at 803-781-8088 to schedule an officer to visit your event or Sgt.
