PRESIDENT’S LETTER

A

leader of AIA and a valued colleague recently handed me a small envelope with a centennial stamp affixed. 1857-1957’s 100th Anniversary for AIA. Leading me to this quote from Lilian Gish who spoke at the 1957 convention. She stated, “A prize fighter gets more publicity and in some instances a truck driver is better paid. It would seem that our system of values has reached an Alice in Wonderland absurdity, worthy only of satire.” Fast forward nearly sixty years. AIA South Carolina has been hearing loud and clear from our members that advocacy should be the most important effort of volunteer and staff leadership including lobbying on behalf of AIA South Carolina and its members. We are re-focusing on advocacy since the recession. In addition, have added a group of volunteers from all of our local sections under the leadership of Geordan Terry, AIA. With Adrienne’s guidance, this team is acting proactively in response to emerging issues such as the potential introduction of stock school plans at the state level. Geordan’s committee is also creating a five-year plan to engage a continuous team of volunteer design professionals from all areas of South Carolina, along with a contract lobbyist, to identify and act upon governance issues anywhere in South Carolina. During this past year’s repositioning discussions, we have also agreed to host a quarterly meeting between the board and the section leadership, to promote the initiatives identified during the repositioning resolution and to track their effectiveness. At all levels of AIA South Carolina, we have initiated a meeting structure in order to collaborate effectively and regularly. Advocating on behalf of our members also means being mindful of their great work. Design work that regulates historical, cultural, and social essence into the built

environment. Luke McCary, AIA is leading the planning for our 2016 Conference located in Columbia. With a walking tour of the city, the design awards celebration, excellent speakers, and even a trip to the new baseball stadium downtown during the home opener of Columbia’s Fireflies, this conference offers a manageable day and a half opportunity to get together in recognition of great architecture and a great city. Capitalizing on opportunity. We are also expanding the variety of our successful mini conference formats with timely and relevant subjects. Aaron Bowman, AIA and his committee along with business and events director Tracey Waltz, are finalizing the programming for the next mini conference. Focused on resiliency, it will offer insight into how architects play a vital role in disaster mitigation, response, recovery, and adaptation within their practice and via their community service. We are making progress towards the upfit of our Columbia Center for Architecture. Introducing a design competition opportunity to South Carolina members of the AIA. Thank you to Steve Carter, AIA and his committee for their research and guiding documents. 2016 has proven to be an exciting and busy year, and I am grateful and honored to be the Chapter President serving with the many talented and committed individuals on our state board and within the local sections of AIA South Carolina. Best,

James ‘Jim’ Hubbard, AIA

First conferred in 1962, the AIASC Design Awards are the state’s highest recognition of excellence in design. The Design Awards program recognizes projects, architects and owners from throughout the state that exemplify vision, creativity and design innovation. All entries were designed by registered architects that are members of AIASC in good standing. Projects could have been executed anywhere in the United States or abroad and must have been substantially completed after January 1, 2009.

FIRM AWARD

DESIGN AWARDS

UNBUILT AWARDS

The AIA South Carolina Board of Directors confers the Firm Award in recognition of a significant body of work and/or service that has made a lasting influence on the practice of architecture in South Carolina. Any firms with principals who are members of AIASC are eligible. Consideration is given to firms, regardless of size, which are deserving of recognition for its design excellence, contribution to the profession of architecture, and continuity of service to the public.

The South Carolina Design Awards program recognizes the best in architectural design in South Carolina. All projects were judged based on their architectural excellence as they reflect upon the merits of each submission.

The Unbuilt Project Award recognizes design excellence by members of AIASC in good standing in unbuilt architectural designs of any project type. Projects could have included purely theoretical projects and unbuilt client-sponsored projects (commercial or residential buildings, interiors, transportation infrastructure, monuments, etc.). Projects under construction or otherwise apparently assured of construction were not eligible.

p. 1 2

ROBERT MILLS AWARDS Named in honor of Charlestonborn Robert Mills, the nation’s first native trained architect, the Robert Mills Award was initiated in 2002 to recognize design excellence in residential architecture throughout South Carolina. All entries were executed single-family residential projects designed by registered architects that are members of AIASC in good standing. Projects could have been executed anywhere in the United States or abroad.

p. 2 8

HISTORIC PRESERVATION The Historic Preservation Award will recognize the best restoration work of a South Carolina property. Eligible projects should involve comprehensive work to restore a historic building, structure, object or site. They should include pure preservation or restoration, adaptive reuse of existing structures whose overall architectural character is maintained, sympathetic additions to historic structures, and replication or reconstruction of damaged or destroyed structures or element thereof. Routine maintenance, such as painting or reroofing, is not considered restoration work for the purposes of this award.

p. 3 6

p. 1 6 COTE AWARDS AIASC COTE recognizes that a well-designed project includes environmental, technical, and aesthetic excellence. Stewardship, performance, and inspiration are, therefore, essential and inseparable to great design. The AIASC COTE Award honors outstanding projects that integrate and incorporate sustainable principles by members of AIASC in good standing.

p. 3 3 ADAPTIVE REUSE The Adaptive Reuse/Renovation Award Category is for built projects which include rehabilitation or adaptive reuse. This award will recognize the best renovation or addition to a structure that is not intended to be a faithful historic restoration. Eligible projects must begin with a pre-existing building, structure, object or site that incorporates an intervention that is clearly intended to compliment or contrast with the original subject building. The submitted project should include either a renovation within an existing building or a new construction that expands the existing structure or site.

p. 3 8

p. 3 2

INTERIOR ARCHITECTURE The Interior Architecture Design Award recognizes design excellence by members of AIA SC for projects with a focus on the interior as architecture. Projects may have included those that involve up-fitting new or renovating existing construction.

p. 3 4 STUDENT AWARD The Student Design Award recognizes the excellent work by students currently enrolled in an architecture, interior design or urban design program in any academic institution in South Carolina, including Graduate School or 4-year University or College. The category is open to those who have graduated from one of these institutions within the past year. Entrants are sponsored by an AIASC member in good standing.

p. 4 4

PURPOSE: AIASC has a long tradition of recognizing individuals, organizations, and projects for exemplifying the very best in architecture. The AIA believes that awards programs should be carefully structured so that selection and recognition of honorees serve two distinct purposes: one directed to the profession, and the other, to the public. By focusing attention on activity within the profession, the general quality of architectural practice is elevated. By informing the public on the breadth and value of architectural practice, the entire profession is held in higher esteem. AIASC achieves this purpose by establishing and sponsoring the awards.

LIOLLIO ARCHITECTURE

12

AIA South Carolina Architecture

S

outh Carolina is rich in talented architectural firms that maintain high levels of design and personify professionalism on a daily basis. Hence, Liollio Architecture is honored upon being named the recipient of the 2016 AIA South Carolina Firm Award, and honors the eight previous recipients of this prestigious Award by sharing their commitment to elevate the language of design and the practice of architecture. Founded in 1956, Liollio’s body of work embraces

a thoughtful restraint, engaging culture and collaboration as keystones to their design process. Their work individually and collectively represents the talent that has dignified their studio over the years. In sponsoring the firm, Ray Huff, FAIA, writes the following: “For sixty years, Liollio Architecture has distinguished itself in our field with a body of award-winning projects that range in size, from

a small handicap ramp for an historic church to a 125,000 SF science center stitched into a fine fabric historic community. Evident in each project are the benchmarks that define their design process: • Culture as a Guide • Thoughtful Restraint in the Simplest Form • Tackle Issues with Optimism • Strengthen Design through Community Engagement • Leverage Restrained Budgets to Create Big Ideas Using Fewer Resources

Design Excellence Liollio has been awarded 80 Design Awards for 39 projects over the last 14 years that include 2 AIA South Atlantic Region Awards, 18 AIASC Awards, 2015 Library Journal New Landmark Libraries Winner, and multiple international, national and regional awards and design recognition.

Contribution to the Profession of Architecture The Liollio team has served as jurors on national, regional and state design award programs, presented at multiple industry conferences, and have engaged with leadership positions with AIA on a state and local basis.

Contribution to the Community The Liollio team has served on municipal and county boards and commissions, engaged with leadership positions on numerous civic and business organizations, and are actively involved with design related educational organizations, such as the ACE Mentorship Program. I personally have had the opportunity to observe how the members of the firm interact with each other. I commend Liollio for annually inviting practicing architects into their firm to critique their portfolio of recent work so to strengthen and

expand their realm of understanding. The manner in which the firm conducts its business is always a tribute to the tenets of our profession. I can state confidently that Liollio Architecture takes very seriously the impact that the architect has on the built environment.” Frank Harmon, FAIA, offers the following testament: “Liollio Architecture has provided leadership in design that is seen within their community and throughout our region as

innovative and responsive. I first became aware of Liollio’s work as an AIA Design Awards Juror. Over the last decade I have juried Liollio projects as varied as an entry ramp to a modest church to a major county library. Liollio are skilled at historic renovation and they are leading edge in modern design. In fact their respect for historic architecture inspires and gives depth to their contemporary work. I have visited many Liollio projects including two on Edisto Island. The Edisto Beach State Park Visitor Center is a model of environmentally responsive design. It fits into its Low Country setting as effortlessly as a palm tree. I have attended drama productions and given lectures in the Edisto Community Center and School. This is a building and landscape that is deeply loved by its community. Their practice is grounded in the particulars of place, client, material, site and budget. Their renovation of the U.S. Custom House, for example, is exemplary for the respect of historic architecture and its place in South Carolina.

Liollio’s new buildings are as responsive to the region as their restored ones. For the St. Helena Library at Penn Center, they designed a boldly modern structure of steel and wood that embraced the natural landscape and was a thoughtful response to climate and local tradition. The library is a model of orderly, rational design that conserves materials wisely. I have been impressed by Liollio’s other activities that produce fine architecture with a strong sense of social purpose. The James E. Clyburn Community Center in Wiltown SC, for example, is a model of how architecture can enrich and welcome an underserved community. Liollio offers hope and inspiration to firms across the South that aspire to serve their community with good design. Liollio Architecture has significantly advanced the standard of design with buildings that possess spirit, clarity and a sense of place, raising the public appreciation for architecture. I am quite certain that their selection as Firm of the Year will inspire architects throughout our region.

he Claussen Bakery served the community as a commercial bakery from 1920 to 1973 and is a significant historic property in Greenville’s West Side Neighborhood. Gutted and vacant for many years, the building had significant structural issues but handsome architectural features such as soaring beaded wood ceilings, exposed steel trusses, and unadorned brick walls. The 40,000 SF building has been adapted as a mixed-use redevelopment containing retail businesses and neighborhood services on the ground level, and a single tenant, class “A” office space on the upper level.

ocated in a vibrant neighborhood retail district, this project included renovating two adjoining street level storefronts into one boutique, offering both retail cosmetics and a makeup bar/ skin treatment services. The retail component is open by day to the public and the adjacent makeup bar and skin service area is available by appointment and for special events. This unique project consisted of renovating two separate storefronts into one business with two related functions: a cosmetic retail area and a makeup bar offering skin treatment services. The challenge was to create a design for the related functions while maintaining one unified, upscale brand.

he Metropolitan Library, formerly called the Stewart Lakewood Branch of the Atlanta Fulton County Library System, is a 25,000 s.f. facility providing traditional library resources as well as many forward-looking community resources. This branch library occupies a prominent site in the Sylvan Hills neighborhood of Atlanta, and meets as many of the goals and wishes expressed by the community as possible. The library program includes community spaces for neighborhood groups and classes, expanded digital resources, children’s areas and after-school programs as a social connector for community, family, technology, literature and information. The glass-curtain-walled structure features an open plan that affords a feeling of space and light, while acoustical controls expertly manage sound reflection. Public art pervades the library, as well as several sensitive installations in remembrance of the church that formerly occupied the site. Four white granite Doric columns that once supported the church’s façade now hold the site’s corner in silent witness to history.

MEP ENGINEERING: Located in a transitional neighborhood, this project is replete with both opportunity and challenge. From its inception, the Library was developed as a cultural center and locus of information, education, ideas and socialization, ultimately creating the conditions for positive community change. The project was part of a Fulton County Library bond referendum, which incorporated sustainability as a core value, and is tracking LEED Silver. The approach to sustainability for this project focused primarily on three attributes: longevity, daylighting and naturalizing the site. Longevity was accomplished by using materials that are durable and an infrastructure that is resilient and flexible enough to allow for changes in use over time. Daylighting strategies relied on large expanses of windows (a glass curtain wall) to facilitate indoor/ outdoor nature connections and sensor-driven use of LED light fixtures. Naturalizing the site involved the responsible management of stormwater using bioswales, infiltration and protection of stormwater patterns, exclusive use of native and adaptive plantings, provisions for meaningful exterior public use spaces, and protection of existing natural tree-ed areas.

ffectionately dubbed the “folded airplane”, the building features a single folded roof that rises along a diagonal ridgeline. Bold design moves give new prominence to the existing park. It strongly demarcates entry and stands as a source of pride in a rural community while providing meeting space and park services. Cost effective, low maintenance materials including corrugated metal, smooth fiber cement panels, and concrete masonry units are carefully detailed and accompanied by bold color accents. They stand as a welcome departure from the generic red brick, white column, gable roof pro-typical design concept typical of Richland County Recreation Commission facilities. A lack of kitchen and meeting space proved to be an obstacle for the Richland County Recreation Commission, limiting their ability to provide services to the community. With over 1,632 residents and an active senior population, Richland County was tasked with developing a solution to meet the diverse needs of Gadsden.

his marching band facility is located adjacent to UNC Charlotte’s iconic School of Architecture, Storrs Hall, designed by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates in 1988. Departing from the predominantly neo-traditional campus architecture, the exterior expression is a composition of abstracted planes and interlocking volumes, consistent with Gwathmey Siegel’s work of the period, in counterpoint to Storrs’ bands of color and punched openings. Through placement, orientation and program simplification, the building also redefines a previously ill-defined outdoor space, creating an event lawn, terminating Storrs’ primary axis. A monumental canopy simultaneously shades the main westfacing façade and provides a stage for outdoor performances. Conceived by the client as a pre-engineered storage facility for the university’s fledgling marching band, this modest structure was to be placed on a back-ofhouse lot in the corner of campus, immediately adjacent to the service yard of the School of Architecture, Storrs Hall, and across from Robinson Hall for the Performing Arts. Presented with an underutilized site and a well-defined program, however, the design team recognized an opportunity to solve a variety of existing site problems, while both reducing the size of the building, and creating an appropriate home for the marching band. The intent – and the hope of the architects – is that the resulting design is not only respectful of its neighbor but responds appropriately to its celebrated architect’s late-twentieth century modernist polemic, thereby reinforcing a sense of dialogue between the two buildings, both physically and across generations.

The clients wanted an outdoor space to enjoy nature, a few steps removed from the critters. he Guignard Brick Works is an early twentieth century industrial complex that produced bricks for many buildings constructed in Columbia and throughout the state from around 1900 to the mid-twentieth century. The property features several historically significant structures including 4 beehive or circular downdraft brick kilns, a small office building, and other remnants of the early industrial development. The land adjacent to the Brick Works site has recently been master planned for future development. This unbuilt adaptive re-use project explores the potential for showcasing the historic kilns and office building as part of the overall development of the property. Listed on the National Register, three of the four beehive kilns on the Guignard Brick Works site were built circa 1920, while the fourth was built circa 1932 to replace one that burned in that year. A one-story hip roof office building, circa 1900, sits just west of the kilns. Although these remaining structures date from the first half of the twentieth century, the Guignard family started producing bricks on or near this site in the early to mid-1800s, utilizing clay from the nearby Congaree River.

UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA HOLLINGS SPECIAL COLLECTIONS ADDITION

n designing a special collections addition to a university library originally designed by Edward Durell Stone, one primary challenge was to provide a solution that would celebrate the library’s valuable holdings while respecting the original design. Stringent security and environmental requirements posed additional challenges. By introducing a bridge/connector between old and new, these requirements as well as sensitivity to the original architecture were simultaneously addressed. Pulled away from the original building, the addition was consciously designed as an abstracted form, in counterpoint to the original design.

uilt circa 1798, the Gadsden House is a grand, Federal style Charleston manor. It is listed on the National Historic Register and celebrated as one of the top historic properties to save and restore by both the Preservation Society of Charleston and Historic Charleston Foundation. The house’s exterior, interior and grounds were completely restored during the recent conversion of the property into an event space that is now available to the public. The Gadsden House was built by Christopher Gadsden, a Revolutionary War hero and statesman in the First Continental Congress. It was given as a wedding gift to his son Philip Gadsden and continued to house members of

the Gadsden family until the early 20th century. The house saw decline in the mid-20th century, as did much of the historic Ansonborough neighborhood in which it is located, however it was saved from demolition in 1959 by the Historic Charleston Foundation as their first step in revitalizing the area. All restoration work was completed with the partnership and guidance of the Historic Charleston Foundation. This historic property had a complete and painstakingly detailed restoration of the entire grounds, breathing new life into its rich, elegant exterior and interiors. These grounds now showcase the architectural elements that reflect its 19th century grandeur.

These gates have undergone a complete restoration along with other wrought iron detailing on the grounds. The grounds themselves were completely redesigned to incorporate landscaping and hardscaping common of its period. A fruitful archaeological exploration of the site took place before any earth was disturbed. Part of the findings were 200 or so handmade bricks original to the house which were used in part to reconstruct the failing perimeter wall of the structure.

Throughout the design process, the architects coordinated closely with the South Carolina Department of Archives & History to maintain and, in many cases, improve the integrity of the historic structure. Two monumental additions, the new entry and the planetarium enclosure, lightly engage the original building, in counterpoint to the historic, heavy masonry. New interior elements reintroduce the building’s industrial-textile history, utilizing woven mesh panels and industrial detailing.

he renovation of the upper floor of a historic theater completed the renovations for the non-profit film-house, Nickelodeon Theatre. Since moving to Main Street several years ago, this phase of renovations included completion of an additional theatre, elevator installation, and other renovations to the façade, concession, office, and back-of house areas. Rich color palates were used to create the owner’s wish of a historic “grand” theater experience, while also incorporating the modern elements of comfort and technology. The finished renovations restore key elements of the historic space, with new additions to provide a safe and accessible experience.

CENTRAL CAROLINA TECHNICAL COLLEGE - ADVANCED MANUFACTURING TECHNOLOGY TRAINING CENTER

T

he adaptive reuse design for this advanced manufacturing facility converted an abandoned 1980’s-era Walmart into a techno-chic marquis building for a rapidly growing community college program. Multiple layers and interventions turned a massive building with a commercial-scale parking lot into a welcoming, inspiring facility designed to spur economic growth for its region. Once an abandoned Walmart, a massive 103,000 SF space with a vast asphalt parking lot, this new Advanced Manufacturing Training Center is now a catalyst for industry and economic growth. Following a dramatic adaptive reuse transformation, this new training facility for a community college houses mechatronics labs, robotics, computer sciences training programs, and an entire suite for a prominent commercial tenant for training prospective employees in automotive tire manufacturing.

he Project is located in a neighborhood at Central, South Carolina, near Southern Wesleyan University. It focuses on how to anchor an ambulatory care facility within existing context and tries to provide a comprehensive physical healing environment for the community. From a geological point, the basic idea is trying to keep existing geological conditions as much as possible. Such as proposing zigzag slope parking rather than digging out a flat parking square, the main building volume is also designed to float over the slope which can make the existing slope into a healing garden. From a light environment point, the principle is to provide enough direct sunlight for users, including both patients and medical workers. Such as puncturing a series of courtyards to bring light for exam rooms, proposing roof windows for each medical pods to bring roof light for the centered nurse station. From a context point, proposing enough vegetation coverage around the building so that at most standing views, the building is hidden behind trees. But it still can be seen from the highway. Also, near the residential area, breaking down the building envelope to keep proper scale for the neighborhood road. In general, those strategies can help to create a contextual friendly building, and actively provide a healing environment to the local community.

THE GOAT FARM ARTS CENTER

he Goat Farm is a creative community operating in a 19th century cotton mill machinery complex. The site is hemmed in on all sides by railroad, a private school, and new apartment complexes. Since 2006, the Goat Farm has been acquired by developers multiple times, only to be saved from bulldozers and returned to the community. Today it hosts artists, engineers, and entrepreneurs that live and work there - having found a way to make a living on, in, and amongst decaying ruins of industrial history. Approaching this project, we had to ask: How do we develop a program for a site that doesn’t want to be developed? The culture of the existing Goat Farm was the predominant quality that drew us to the Goat Farm, and one that we sought to build upon and preserve. The Goat Farm community is a patchwork of people that have stitched together what’s there, forming a dense creative [Culture]. Currently, many of the current residents are musicians that have no quality place to record. Thus, the [Sound Box] was added to the program. It includes 5 different recording studios that can be signed out by residents, or publicly leased by the hour. Other buildings that we propose include a [Play Box] for large theater, a [Black Box] for experimental performances, and a [Tool Box] for utilitarian support and fabrication. Thus the program was split, the components dispersed, and buildings patched into the fabric of the site. The [Mobile Box] is conceived as a site component to tie it all together. As a mobile unit, it runs on recessed trolley tracks transporting heavy objects between the buildings via an overhead gantry crane. As a platform, the [Mobile Box] also works as a mobile stage, providing technical infrastructure to the interstitial spaces for planned or impromptu performances. These programmatic elements are conceived and organized in a way that is intended to support and promote growth of the community.

his 10 week project was for a Federally Qualified Health Center known as Foothills Community Health Care Center (formerly Heritage Federally Qualified Health Center) to be located on the Southern Wesleyan College Campus located in Central, South Carolina. The Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) brings more efficient medical care to community in Central where there is lack of access to meet the population’s need. The design process involved with staff, client, and physicians to planning the efficient space programming as well as to accommodate theirs needs. The FQHC are comprised of the traditional attributes of the home with applying the gable roof structure and human scale building. These strategies are create harmony with context and calm domestic feeling. The gable roof motif opens to campus, major road, and creates non-institutional appearance with pleasure environment for patient and staff. Humanistic approach has great influence on creating positive environment for patients, staff, and families. Also, the environmental aspects are considered during the design such as daylight in work area, collecting grey water, and applying different strategies to use daylight at different interior spaces.
