History

Pioneer Day, Gray Court, SC

of Laurens County

T

he Cherokee Indians were the original inhabitants of Laurens County. John Duncan (a native of Aberdeen, Scotland) was the first white settler to inhabit the area. Duncan arrived in 1752 from Pennsylvania and settled along a creek in the northeastern section of the county, between present-day Clinton and Whitmire. Scottish-Irish immigrants out of Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia became the predominant settlers in this area. During the Revolutionary War, the area that would soon become Laurens County was the site of four significant battles, including Musgrove Mill on Aug. 18, 1780. Today, the Musgrove Mill State Historic Site marks the location of this battle. The visitors center at the park documents the role South Carolina patriots played in winning American independence.

The General Assembly passed an act on March 12, 1785, whereby six counties were established out of the Old 96 District. Laurens County was one of those counties. The town of Laurens (known as Laurensville well into the 19th century) became the county seat. Laurens County derived its name from a patriot, warrior and statesman, the Honorable Henry Laurens of Charleston. Henry Laurens was president of the Continental Congress during the Revolutionary War and later served as ambassador to France to secure aid in helping the colonies fight for their independence. By 1820, Laurens was known for its tailor-made clothes. Andrew Johnson, the 17th president of the United States, came to Laurens in 1824 and established a tailor shop in the town square. By 1840, the area was booming with establishments, including

HISTORY medical practitioners; a fancy confectionery and fruit store; carriage, buggy and wagon shops; tailor shops; building contractors; flour and corn mills; and 81 registered whiskey distilleries. By the end of the 19th century, textiles were becoming very important in Laurens County and the Upstate. The Laurens Cotton Mill was established in 1895. Mercer Silas Bailey built the first cotton mill in Clinton in 1896, and both Lydia Mill and Watts Mill were established in 1902. However, over the last several decades, textiles have been displaced by a wide variety of industries, including distribution centers, manufacturing, research firms, automobile parts suppliers and others. During the 20th century, Laurens County gradually grew, remaining predominantly rural in character. Between 1900 and 1950, the county grew from 37,382 residents to 46,974 – a number

that has grown to approximately 70,000 in 2010 (according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s QuickFacts). With its outstanding location, diversi-

fied industrial base and unique quality of life, there is no doubt Laurens County will continue to grow and prosper well into the future.

Local Statistics Statistically, Laurens County is recognized among the fastest-growing counties in the Upstate. According to the latest records, 66,508 people call Laurens County home. Of the residents of the county, 30 percent live in the two main cities of Clinton and Laurens. The remainder reside in the smaller communities of Cross Hill, Fountain Inn, Gray Court, Hickory Tavern, Mountville, Joanna, Ware Shoals and Waterloo, or in rural areas.

LAURENS The historic city of Laurens serves as the county seat of Laurens County. The town was formerly called Laurensville and the first record of its being called Laurens appears on a charter issued in 1873. Today, residents and guests experience a unique mix of history and modern development. One of the city’s most notable features is the Laurens Historic District, a site comprised of the area of the public square and most of the surrounding streets. The district has been placed in the National Register of Historic Places. The city of Laurens has 10,467 residents and is governed by a mayor/council form of government.

CLINTON Clinton’s past is traced to the arrival of Scottish-Irish immigrants two decades before the American Revolution. The town itself was officially incorporated in 1852, taking its name in honor of Henry Clinton Young, a lawyer from Laurensville, who helped lay out the first streets. Today, Clinton is the second-largest city in Laurens County, with

10,245 residents. A city manager/council form of government governs the city.

CROSS HILL The town of Cross Hill is located in southeastern Laurens County, bordered on the east by Newberry County and on the southwest by Lake Greenwood. The area was a north-south Native American path across the fish dams on the Broad River and leading to the fish dams on the Savannah River. Many years ago, someone crossed the first path on a hill and gave Cross Hill its name. Rosemont,

the family plantation of Ann Pamela Cunningham, leader in the effort to save President George Washington’s home in Mount Vernon, Va., was located near the community. Today the town of Cross Hill is a modest community of 591 residents, and is governed by a mayor/council form of government.

FOUNTAIN INN Fountain Inn takes its name from the old inn with a fountain that attracted travelers seeking rest from the tiresome

Fountain Inn has a population of 7,870 residents. It has a mayor/council form of government. While it is part of Laurens County, a large portion of the town is also located in Greenville County.

GRAY COURT Nestled in the northwest corner of Laurens County is the town of Gray Court, originally named Dorroh or Dorrohville in honor of a local family. On Oct. 17, 1899, the name was changed to Gray Court and the town was chartered three days later. Gray Court has a population of 996 residents, according to the 2010 census. The town has a mayor/council form of government.

JOANNA Joanna is the largest non-incorporated community in the county, with 1,609 residents. For many years the community was known as Goldville until its name was officially changed on Aug. 1, 1948. During the War Between the States, the community around the railroad was known as Martin’s Depot. On the night of April 30, 1865, Confederate President Jefferson Davis and his entourage spent the night at the nearby Lafayette Young House during their escape from Richmond at the close of the war.

WATERLOO The town of Waterloo is located 12 miles south of Laurens on the shores of beautiful Lake Greenwood. The town was incorporated on Dec. 4, 1885. The small community of 203 residents offers many outdoor sporting and recreational activities. Waterloo is governed by a mayor/council form of government.

Location and Transportation L

aurens County is situated in the Upstate region of South Carolina, geographically centered between Greenville, Spartanburg and Columbia. Interstates 26 and 385 offer a convenient link to these outlying communities, along with Charlotte, N.C. (100 miles), Atlanta (165 miles) and Charleston, S.C. (175 miles). One of South Carolina’s largest airports, Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, is less than 45 minutes from Laurens County. GSP serves the Upstate with four air cargo carriers and six passenger airlines offering numerous flights daily to more than a dozen nonstop destinations. GSP is located 12 miles northeast of the city of Greenville and has connections to major airports such as Chicago O’Hare, Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson, Philadelphia, Newark, as well as Dulles and Reagan Na-

tional airports in Washington, D.C. Charlotte Douglas and Columbia Metropolitan airports, both a short drive from Laurens County, provide convenient air travel as well. Laurens County facilities include a general aviation airport to service the county’s air traffic. The Laurens County Airport offers service to turbo props and business jets. Private and corporate aircraft use the 4,400-foot paved runway. Other services offered by the airport are hangar rental spots, maintenance and fuel service. Rail service to Laurens County is provided by CSX Transportation, with the company’s main line passing directly through Clinton. The Carolina Piedmont

division of South Carolina Central Railroad operates a 34.4-mile rail system between Laurens and Greenville that runs parallel to I-385. Adding to the region’s vast transportation network, water transportation is accessible at the extensive Port of Charleston, which is located 168 miles from Laurens County via I-26. Tourist passengers take advantage of Charleston Cruises, while businesses utilize its unique warehouse and distribution services.

beautiful and richly historic buildings in the county are its churches, which have been standing for hundreds of years. Organized in 1764, Duncan Creek Presbyterian Church is the oldest church in Laurens County. The adjacent cemetery contains the graves of several Revolutionary War soldiers. Other 18th century churches include Old King’s Chapel Methodist Church, organized in 1789, and Liberty Springs Presbyterian Church, organized in 1767. The Baptist denomination has 71 churches in the county, while the Presbyterians and Methodists have 18 churches each. Laurens County is also home to a number of other denominations, including AME, Catholic, Episcopal, Jehovah’s Witnesses, Latter-day Saints, Lutheran, Pentecostal, Wesleyan and others.

aurens County is brimming with opportunities for recreation. With rivers, lakes, hiking trails, golf courses, hunting areas and more, there is never a shortage of activities to be enjoyed. Well-maintained park sites dot the map of Laurens County, offering a combination of baseball/softball fields, playground equipment, picnic areas, swimming pools and basketball and tennis courts. The area also features a host of private and public lakes, including Lake Greenwood, with more than 200 miles of shoreline, and Lake Rabon, as well as the Enoree and Saluda rivers, which provide excellent fishing and boating. Nearby Myrtle Beach, Charleston and Hilton Head Island make ideal weekend getaways. Laurens County is also a short drive away from the Great Smoky National Park and the Blue Ridge Mountains,

with skiing at such mountain resorts as Sugar Mountain, Beech Mountain and Ober Gatlinburg. Hunters utilize private and leased lands in the county, as well as in Sumter National Forest. Skeet shooting and turkey, deer, quail and other hunting packages, as well as lodging and meeting

facilities are available at Harris Springs Sportsman’s Preserve between Cross Hill and Waterloo. The Clinton House Plantation, located just north of Clinton, offers bird and duck hunting, deer and turkey hunts, corporate meetings and conference facilities. Golfers revel in the selection of beautiful, challenging courses in this South Carolina region. In fact, there are more than 50 golf courses in the Upstate, all of which are within a short drive of Laurens County. Locally, Laurens County has two private and one public 18-hole golf courses: • Musgrove Mill, an Arnold Palmer World Class Championship Course that was chosen as one of the top modern courses in the U.S. by Golfweek magazine • Lakeside Country Club, which also has a new swimming pool • Rolling S Golf Club, a public 18-hole golf course.

In addition, Augusta, home of the Masters, is only a couple of hours down the road. Tennis courts are available at several locations in Laurens County. The options for recreation don’t end there. Three YMCAs are accessible, and each coordinate adult and youth recreational leagues in the county. RVing is popular at the Cane Creek Motorcoach Resort, Moon’s Landing and Mansfield Park along Lake Greenwood,

as well as Magnolia RV Park and Campground in Joanna. Auto racing is at its best at the Laurens Speedway, which offers auto racing from April through September. A race track is also available in Gray Court. Darlington International Raceway and Charlotte Motor Speedway are easy drives from Laurens County, as well. Baseball, softball, football, basketball, soccer, golf and tennis are available

through the local high schools and Presbyterian College. Presbyterian College also offers lacrosse. Atlantic Coast and Southeastern Conference sports are within a one-hour drive at Clemson University and the University of South Carolina. Greenville, less than an hour’s drive from Laurens County, offers minor league hockey and baseball. Charlotte, N.C., and Atlanta offer professional sporting events.

Education Two public school districts, two private schools, one technical college, one four-year college and a branch university meet the educational needs of Laurens County. Numerous other colleges and universities are within a one-hour commute.

PUBLIC SCHOOLS Laurens County School District 56 serves the City of Clinton and southern Laurens County. The district serves approximately 3,059 students in three elementary schools and two secondary schools, as well as a Child Development Center for grades preK-4K. All of the district’s schools are located in Clinton with the exception of Joanna-Woodson Elementary in the Joanna community. All schools are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and the South Carolina Department of Education. The district has an excellent 24:1 pupil to teacher ratio and a 2:11 student/computer ratio. District 56 strives to embrace the principles on which they stand as they relate to the students, staff and community. They are environment, uniqueness, collaboration, goals and content. The new Clinton High School, which opened in fall 2010, offers advanced placement courses in English, calculus, American history and biology. Students who qualify may earn college credit through a cooperative agreement with Presbyterian College. Computer-assisted instruction is offered in all schools. A full complement of extracurricular activities is provided in a variety of award-winning programs. District 56 has both a nationally recognized JROTC program and National Beta Club. They offer strong programs for the academically gifted, services for students with disabilities, outdoor environmental

labs, National Wildlife Federation Schoolyard Habitats®, a National Honor Society, state-recognized service learning labs and a strong band program. The district also collaborates with such prominent organizations as the Dolly Parton Imagination Library free books program, South Carolina Governor’s Reading Initiative, the Milken Teacher Advancement Program and Presbyterian College’s CHAMPS program. About 500 employees work in the district, and more than half of the teachers hold advanced degrees. There are 24 teachers who have National Board Certification. Laurens County School District 55 strives to be a system of excellence and equity in educational practices for each

Serving approximately 5,900 students in 11 schools from the City of Laurens and its surrounding areas, District 55 provides opportunities for students from 4-year-old kindergarten through grade 12. Instruction is focused on state and national education standards at every grade level. The district uses an assessment process to determine each student’s individual academic growth and to understand a student’s current performance level. This process provides data that is then used to

help meet the needs of students. Reading intervention programs are in place at all schools to provide assistance to struggling readers. The district’s strong emphasis in literacy helps students become stronger readers and learners in all subject areas. Realizing that the family is the primary influence in the development of an individual, District 55 is proud to participate in the Be There national initiative — a program designed to help parents turn ordinary moments into something extraordinary for children. The district’s parenting program also provides training, literature and newsletters that address everyday issues faced at home and in the school setting. District 55 believes that effective and highly qualified professionals are the basis for providing an atmosphere of excellence for all students. Of the current 391 certified teachers on staff, 308 hold advanced certifications or degrees. Thirty-three district teachers hold National Board

The district has more than 2,000 computers connected to the Internet, Promethean interactive whiteboards in more than 100 classrooms and on-site technical support at each school, thus providing students with hands-on technology and resources. Laurens District 55 believes that each individual has different needs and deserves equal opportunities for success in learning. A partnership with Laurens County First Steps provides opportunities for preparing students to enter the school setting. The district provides parents a choice of Creative Curriculum or Montessori Curriculum for students entering kindergarten. There are trained teachers on staff to address the academic needs of Limited English Proficient students.

The School-to-Work Program provides extensive opportunities for high school students to receive hands-on experience in the workplace. Through these initiatives and many others, Laurens District 55 is committed to making every moment matter and producing individuals who can and will make valuable contributions to the Laurens County community.

LIFELONG LEARNING The mission of Laurens County Lifelong Learning is to provide needed educational opportunities for those who want to further their education to be able to obtain a high school credential, go on to higher education or enter the workforce. Lifelong Learning works with people of all ages. Family Literacy helps to prepare both the parents and preschoolers to be

successful as a family and as students. The GED Program gives the 17-yearold and older a second chance to obtain a high school credential. WorkKeys prepares and measures an individual’s academic level and job ability performance levels. Basic computer courses help to give students basic computer skills in many different computer programs.

PRIVATE SCHOOLS Laurens Academy is located one mile off I-385 on Highway 49, convenient to Laurens and Clinton, as well as Union, Simpsonville and surrounding areas. The school offers a K4-12 college pre-

EDUCATION paratory curriculum with a nondenominational Christian emphasis and is accredited by the South Carolina Independent School Association. Visual and choral arts, foreign language, a computer lab, physical education, dual enrollment (high school/ college credit) courses and a competitive and successful athletic program are just a few of the things offered at Laurens Academy. Lighthouse Christian Academy is located on Highway 221 between Laurens and Enoree. The school offers a quality, Christ-centered education in grades K512. Their goal is to educate each child in a Christian atmosphere and provide them with the academic training they will need to succeed. Annual and monthly tuition plans are available.

LAURENS COUNTY LIBRARY The Laurens County Library System operates two libraries and one bookmobile and provides book deposits at several locations throughout the county for senior citizens. The 23,000-square-foot headquarters facility, located at 1017 West Main St. in Laurens, opened in 1989. It has a large public meeting room that accommodates 80, a smaller conference room and several study and tutoring rooms. The 8,200-square-foot Clinton Public Library is located at 107 Jacobs Highway in Clinton. The bookmobile provides service throughout Laurens County. In addition to more than 110,000 books, the library’s collection contains books on tape, magazines, videocassettes and large-type books. Both Clinton and Laurens libraries have computers connected to the Internet with various programs (including Word, Excel and Powerpoint) loaded and available for public use. Basic computer classes are offered free of charge at the Laurens Library. The headquarters library in Laurens has an extensive local history and genealogy collection. Both libraries offer children’s programs throughout the year.

EDUCATION Reference services are also available. Resources covering a wide range of subject areas, including finance and business, are available in both print and electronic format. HIGHER EDUCATION Presbyterian College is a four-year, private, coeducational college accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. A highly selective national liberal arts college, PC is affiliated with the Presbyterian Church (USA) and has been recognized in national publications and in the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll as a college that “gets it right” based on students’ and graduates’ contributions to society. Founded in 1880 as Clinton College, PC is located on 240 acres in Clinton. In

addition to winning prestigious national and international scholarships, including a Rhodes Scholar, Rotary Scholars, Pew Fellows and a National Science Foundation Fellowship, PC graduates are servant leaders in their careers, their communities and their churches. Small classes are taught by a dedicated faculty — the vast majority of whom hold their terminal degrees. Six faculty members have been honored as South Carolina’s Professor of the Year — the most of any college or university in the state. The Blue Hose athletics program is now a member of the Big South Conference and competes in NCAA Division I with 15 varsity sports for men and women. The new Presbyterian College School of Pharmacy opened on Aug. 16, 2010, with its inaugural class of nearly 80 students. The four-year Pharm.D. program now serves approximately 300 students. Satellite operations of the University of South Carolina Union at Laurens began

in 1983 with classes offered at the local junior high school. Since that time, the school has relocated to the Laurens County Higher Education Center, a state-ofthe-art facility that opened in early 2002. USCU-L is especially attractive to adult students who return either to complete a degree, to take classes that their careers require or to enhance their knowledge of various academic subjects. Afternoon and evening courses are the mainstay of the curriculum. In the face of skyrocketing college costs, some high school graduates also begin their undergraduate studies at USCU-L. Through its concurrent enrollment program, the school also offers qualified high school juniors and seniors the opportunity to begin their college coursework at a reduced fee before graduation. They may choose from a variety of classes in the humanities and the social and natural sciences, which can be applied to associate or baccalaureate degree programs. For teachers in area school districts, USCU-L is a source of recertification or advanced degree classes. The school also serves as a registration and testing site for many telecommunications classes originating at the university’s main campus in Columbia. Piedmont Technical College became the eighth of the 16 member institutions in the South Carolina Technical Education System when it was established in 1966 to serve Laurens, Abbeville, Edgefield, Greenwood, McCormick, Newberry and Saluda counties. Those seven counties represent the largest geographic area served by any technical college in the state. Piedmont’s main campus is located on a 65-acre plot on Emerald Road in Greenwood. The annual six-month-long campaign, which runs from midsummer through the end of the year, features hundreds of local businesses. During this time, participating businesses accept “Laurens County Bucks” — vouchers that are sold to the general public at a 10 percent discount to be used at participating businesses for products and services at full face value. he Laurens County Development Corporation (LCDC) is dedicated to ensuring thoughtful economic development throughout the area. The organization has been successful in retaining and expanding the local business community by investing in lucrative development plans and marketing strategies. Laurens County businesses, including potential and existing businesses, take advantage of a variety of economic incentives when it comes to relocation and expansion. The state provides a host of grants and incentives, including a Job Development Credit (JDC) and Job Tax Credit (JTC), along with one of the country’s most successful training programs — the ReadySC Training Program. Among the incentives offered through the county are Fee in Lieu of Property Taxes (FILOT), a Special Source Revenue Credit (SSRC) and

The Laurens County Chamber of Commerce works with many volunteers to offer events for members and the Community.

LLC. The company was purchased by Alupress AG, an aluminum casting company based in Italy. In addition, Alupress AG plans to invest $19.9 million to build a 30,000-square-foot aluminum castings plant and create 57 new jobs in Laurens County. The plant will manufacture products for automotive industry clients. The new facility was to begin operations in 2014. • Piedmont Technical College’s Center for Advanced Manufacturing in Laurens County opened its doors in May 2012 with classes in industrial equipment training, soft skills training, WorkKeys testing and preparation, résumé writing and behavioral interviewing skills. Renovation began in January 2012 that transformed the 13,000-square-foot former Honda of Laurens building into the new Center for Advanced Manufacturing. Phase two construction is underway to add a mechatronics lab, a welding lab, additional CNC equipment and another classroom shared between CNC and mechatronics. Flexible space will be available for future industries coming to the county. Upon completion of the 24,300-square-foot training center, Piedmont Tech will offer full mechatronics, machine tool and welding programs with hands-on lab time for students in Laurens County, enabling local residents to stop the commute to the Greenwood campus for this training. Piedmont Technical College, the PTC Foundation, county and city governments,

Laurens County Economic Development Corp. and local industry collaborated for this center. • Piedmont Technical College’s Center for Advanced Manufacturing (CAM) in Laurens has been entrusted with $1 million in ZEISS CALYPSO Metrology Software and Support by Carl Zeiss Industrial Metrology, a global leader in precision metrology solutions. This software will complement the ZEISS CONTURA G2 CMM already in place at the Center for Advanced Manufacturing. The CMM has been in use for training students and employees of companies throughout the region since the facility opened last year. Companies in the Upstate using Carl Zeiss CMM technology include BMW, Bosch and ZF Group. The new software will be used to outfit the Center for Advanced Manufacturing in Laurens for a new Precision Metrology training program — the first and only program of its kind in South Carolina. • Uniscite Inc., a manufacturer of plastic films such as those used in packaging for food products, is investing $70 million to build and equip its 300-square-foot greenfield facility in the Owings Industrial Park in Laurens. Uniscite is expected to create 100 jobs. • Flame Spray S.P.A., an Italian international group and leading maker of thermal spray coatings, established its new production plant in an existing building in the Woodfield Industrial Park. The $9.2 million investment is expected to generate more that 560 new jobs over the next five years and establish a thermal spray-coating plant in Laurens County.

In continuing this tradition, the Laurens County Memorial Hospital has just expanded its facilities to include a state-of-the-art Women’s Life Center as well as an enlarged Emergency Room to meet the growing health care needs in our county. Today, Laurens County Memorial Hospital operates at a capacity of 76 acutecare beds and 14 skilled nursing beds. The hospital retains more than 460 full- and part-time employees and 60 volunteers, in addition to an active medical staff of 55 physicians and 35 consulting physicians. Just opened — a new Emergency Department that triples the size of the former one and offers: • 19 individual treatment rooms that are actual rooms. Each room has four walls, a real door that closes, and a much larger space to accommodate the emergency team and family members. This is a great step forward when reflecting on former treatment areas divided only by privacy curtains. • Trauma treatment rooms • Pediatric resuscitate rooms • Dedicated decontamination rooms • Gynecological and sexual trauma rooms • Cardiac treatment rooms • Behavioral health treatment rooms for mental health patients. In addition, the new Women’s Life Center is designed to provide a warm, supportive experience for new moms and their families, with five spacious, warmly

There are two additional triage/treatment rooms in the same area and a special C-section/GYN surgical suite right on the premises, ready for immediate access. A special facility within the walls of The Women’s Life Center offers educational programs of special interest to women of all ages. Ongoing programs for preadolescent girls, prepared childbirth classes, breastfeeding classes, maternal child programs and even a sibling class top the list. Recognized as one of South Carolina’s progressive community hospitals, Laurens County Memorial Hospital has a mission to “deliver progressive health care in an atmosphere of continuous improvements to ensure ‘we do the right thing’ for all we serve.” The Laurens County Memorial Hospital is a campus of the Greenville Health System and is fully credited by The Joint Commission, a nationwide seal of approval that indicates we meet a high performance of standards. HEALTH CARE Good Shepherd Free Medical Clinic provides free medical care to citizens who are without private insurance, government assistance or the financial resources to afford such care. The clinic is staffed by volunteers and funded by several other sources, including private donations. The Whitten Center, located in Clinton, is the South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs’ largest residential services facility for those individuals who are mentally handicapped or have behavioral problems. The Laurens County Health Department and Laurens County Department of Social Services provide numerous health-related programs, from training to temporary aid for limited-income families. Laurens County has a fine selection of local nursing homes, retirement homes and assisted-living facilities, including Bailey Manor, Langston House, Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Center, NHC Healthcare, Agapé Senior, Clinton Presbyterian Community and the Hospice of Laurens County. For a complete listing, please call the Laurens County Chamber of Commerce. The Hospice of Laurens County was started in 1987 to provide medical, psychosocial and spiritual support to those patients and families in our area dealing with end-of-life issues. In 2008, a new 12-bed Hospice Inpatient Facility was built to provide hospice care to those patients who are unable to stay at home. This $5.5 million facility provides state-of-the-art hospice care in an environment that is comfortable, serene and family-friendly. Each large, spacious patient room opens out to a private patio. Family areas include a comfortable family living area, dining area, children’s room, library and chapel. The meditation garden includes outside seating and a relaxing waterfall. Other hospice services are also available to Laurens County residents: Agapé Hospice, Hospice Care of SC and Hospice of Laurens County,
