Dear Readers, E

ven in my third year of working on Giving, I am constantly amazed at all the wonderful work by nonprofits in the Midlands. Our community is generous with both its hours and its dollars. All of us are learning that you don’t have to be wealthy to be a philanthropist. Even small donations, when combined, can make powerful changes.

As I write this, we are in our first week of the recovery phase after devastating floods washed over our community. There’s not one of us here who doesn’t know someone who lost a home and possessions. Yet rising out of all that destruction is a spirit of kinship like nothing I’ve ever seen.

People near and far have given their time, their goods and their money to help flood victims start to put things right. How many times have I heard someone say, “I just had to do something”? We’re at the beginning of a long haul, but the way ahead looks positive.

In these pages you will read about some of the people who are making a difference in the Midlands. You will read about Paul V. Fant Sr., named 2015 Humanitarian of the Year by United Way. Fant is president of Fant Consulting LLC and his volunteer service is wide-ranging, from health care to economic development to the arts.

We also introduce you to the seven winners of the Association of Fundraising Professionals’ philanthropic awards. And you will read about the winners of the Best of Philanthropy Awards given by the Central Carolina Community Foundation. All of these award winners are amazing people.

Our articles tell about how grants have been used to make the Midlands a better place, how a collaboration of hospital systems and United Way is providing dental and vision care for the uninsured and underinsured, and how technology is changing the world of fundraising.

AFP honors National Philanthropy Day Award winners for 2015

E

very year, the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Central South Carolina Chapter, recognizes exemplary individuals, corporations and organizations involved in giving and volunteering in the Midlands. These winners are good examples of what philanthropy is all about.

AFP Central South Carolina is presenting seven awards for 2015.

Outstanding Fundraising Executive

Maria H. DeHart, Director of Development, Palmetto Health Foundation Maria H. DeHart is a self-motivated, organized and experienced development professional. She was nominated by Samuel Tenenbaum of Palmetto Health Foundation. During her 16 years as a development professional in the Carolinas, she has raised more than $30 million for nonprofit organizations. Her eight-year tenure with the Palmetto Health Foundation includes a number of noteworthy accomplishments.

Maria is leading a $5 million campaign to support Palmetto Health Baptist Parkridge, a new hospital that opened in 2014 in Irmo.

She has led 45 community presentations and tours and to date she has raised more than $2 million for the hospital. In March 2013, Maria secured a $500,000 challenge gift from a major donor family. The family pledged to match any gifts to Women and Children’s Services during a three-week period, up to $500,000. Maria led the drive and personally secured an additional $446,000 to supplement the family’s gift. In total, the challenge gift resulted in $1.2 million pledged for Women and Children’s Services at Palmetto Health. In addition to the impact she makes in health care, Maria has made significant contributions in health and human services, early childhood education and economic development through her work at United Way of the Midlands, where she raised $9 million; at EdVenture Children’s Museum, where she raised $600,000; and the Carolinas Partnership, where she raised $7.5 million. She has contributed significantly to the fundraising profession, demonstrating a willingness to serve and train others.

Outstanding Corporation

Wells Fargo Over the years, Wells Fargo’s contributions to the University of South Carolina and its students and programs have exceeded $2.5 million. Some of the noteworthy programs funded

by Wells Fargo include the Business at Moore residential summer enrichment program for high school juniors; the Executive Lecture Series; financial literacy workshops; and Gamecock Guarantee, USC’s model scholarship program for academically talented, socioeconomically disadvantaged, first-generation college students. Wells Fargo, the first corporate sponsor of Gamecock Guarantee, has helped many young people, whose annual household family income is less than $18,000 and who otherwise couldn’t afford post-secondary education, to attend college either debt-free or almost debt-free. Students, such as S.C. native Kwade Channel (2012), have taken advantage of the Gamecock Guarantee. Kwade became the first college graduate in his family. He now works for the Eaton Corp. as a financial analyst. Wells Fargo has also generated millions of dollars across the state to help nonprofit organizations provide valuable services to deserving community residents. The corporation funds programs such as Call Me Mister and Emerging Scholars at Clemson University. Wells Fargo provides scholarships for the S.C. Technical College System and the College of Charleston. Just recently, the company made a generous contribution on behalf of the nine church members who died in the shootings at Mother Emanuel Church.

Nominated by Elaine Delk of the University of South Carolina, Wells Fargo “talks the talk and walks the walk” by motivating and encouraging its employees to give and become engaged in civic and community activities and service organizations.

Outstanding Philanthropist

Norman and Gerry Sue Arnold Gerry Sue and Norman J. Arnold’s philanthropy has touched practically every aspect of life in the Midlands: the USC Educational Foundation, Palmetto Health Foundation, Columbia Jewish Community Center, Boys and Girls Club, United Jewish Appeal Federation of Columbia, ETV Endowment of SC, Richland

County Sheriff ’s Office, and the African American History Monument, to name only a few.

They were nominated for this award by Katherine W. Davis of Palmetto Health Foundation and Christine H. Myers of the University of South Carolina. Norman and Gerry Sue Arnold have led the way in public health education and transformed local hospitals. The Arnolds’ enduring legacy will surely be the Norman J. Arnold School of Public Health at USC, named in 2000 to honor their pledge of $10 million. From it have sprung countless opportunities for students and faculty to grow and develop in preparation for careers in public health care. The Arnolds also have contributed to the USC School of Medicine, the S.C. College of Pharmacy and the USC Department of Athletics. Additionally, in the last two years, they have given more than $1 million to Palmetto Health Foundation.

These gifts are transforming Palmetto Health hospitals, impacting lives from the tiniest babies to elderly adults. Norman and Gerry Sue pledged a family challenge gift of $500,000 to Palmetto Health Foundation’s Women and Children’s Services. Within three weeks, hundreds of individual and corporate donors contributed an additional $700,000. These funds have been used to purchase specialized equipment and have supported programs such as the Pediatric Institute for Diabetes and Obesity at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital.

Outstanding Volunteer Group Fundraiser

Junior League of Columbia Nominated by Mary Lohman of Girls on the Run Columbia, the Junior League of Columbia focuses on strengthening the health and well-being of children and families in the Midlands and invests over $150,000 in the community each year. The volunteer membership gives over 50,000 hours of time to children and families annually, which amounts to $1 million worth of time. The group has led an extensive fundraising campaign to revitalize Roy Lynch Park. By improving opportunities for physical activity, learning and community engagement, the Roy Lynch Park revitalization will strengthen the health and well-being of students at Logan Elementary and the Elmwood community at large. AWARD WINNERS been established through the design process, by providing opportunities for input from both children and adults. The League has worked closely with public and private partners to drive the project. It has an overall construction value of $500,000, and the League has committed to raising $100,000 and is well on the way to achieving that goal. The members have contributed $50,000 from funds raised during the League’s three annual fundraising events: Clean Sweep, Holiday Market and Touch-A-Truck.

Funds were also raised from individual donors and the League’s 90th Anniversary fundraising campaign, together with sponsorships and inkind support from local businesses.

Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser

Mollie Taylor In 1999, Mollie Taylor took a leadership role when she realized a need at the Dickerson Children’s Advocacy Center (formerly the Lexington County Children’s Center), and decided to fulfill that need by creating a fundraising event. Her efforts helped the agency secure the financial ability to provide services for additional children who desperately needed healing after being physically, sexually or emotionally abused, or witnessing violence.

Creating the 1st Annual All Women’s Golf Tournament that same year, Mollie began her longstanding history with the agency. Now, 16 years later, the tournament is thriving and the initial group of volunteers recruited by Mollie has become the Dickerson Children’s Advocacy Center Fun(d)raisers. This group hosts the annual golf tournament as well as a Mardi Gras Gala. From the beginning, Mollie has inspired the Fun(d)raisers with her philanthropic spirit, and created a culture of success by setting clear goals, establishing timelines and outlining all necessary tasks to ensure that each volunteer knows what they need to do. Since the Fun(d) raisers’ inception in 1999, the group has raised over $750,000 for the center and the children it serves. Nominated by Sarah Johnson of the Advocacy Center, Mollie has served on the center’s Board of Directors and is currently a member of the Advisory Board. The center is named for a family member, and four generations of Mollie’s family have supported the center and have been involved in its mission.

Outstanding Youth Fundraising Group

Heathwood Hall students Seniors Victoria Grice and Margo Mullins led the Heathwood Hall Dance Marathon www.columbiabusinessreport.com

with the theme “We Dance for Those Who Can’t.” The effort raised $29,212 for Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital. Victoria and Margo recruited their committee, coordinated with school leaders, and set out to engage students in a fundraising effort that would make a significant impact. Elise Hagstette, Upper School dean of students, said, “I have never seen two students work harder on a project. From creating a committee, to coordinating with the different division heads, to procuring sponsors, to choreographing and teaching a line dance, to ordering T-shirts, etc., these girls worked like professional event planners.” All students were encouraged to participate. Victoria and Margo created age-appropriate plans and collaborated with faculty to arrange incentives for each age group. They recruited more than 500 student dancers. Nominated by Erin Pope of Heathwood Hall, these students set an exceptional example.

Outstanding Marketing Professional in Support of Philanthropy

Joey Wallace – United Way of the Midlands Nominated by Mike Gray of United Way of the Midlands, Joey Wallace is directly involved in developing marketing plans and materials for United Way’s $10 million annual workplace campaign. Supporting United Way’s commitment to being more “donor centric,” he led a team that developed a plan for donor segmentation around interests and year-round communication. He is well recognized in the development community and has been invited to present to local and regional conferences and groups. Last year, his team launched a social media campaign, “What Makes Tutoring Sweet” on Facebook to thank volunteers who tutored through United Way’s Midlands Reading Consortium. That effort reached 18,500 people in five days. Over the past year, his department increased media coverage by 50% and increased Twitter followers by 57%.

Joey served as chair for the Public Relations Committee for S.C. Mission: Midlands 2014, a two-day health care project managed by United Way that provided free treatment for more than 700 people. He secured more than 30 pieces of earned media coverage. He serves as communications chair on the board of AFP Central SC Chapter and is on the board of the local chapter of the American Advertising Federation. As programs co-chair of AAF last year, he finished second in the country in the 2015 National Club Achievement Competition in the programs division.

HUMANITARIAN OF THE YEAR 2015

U

nited Way of the Midlands is proud to announce the 2015 Humanitarian of the Year – Paul V. Fant Sr., president of Fant Consulting LLC. This award is given each year to an individual who clearly demonstrates extraordinary leadership in philanthropic and human services. It is the highest single honor of philanthropic achievement in Paul Fant, president, the Midlands.

Fant Consulting LLC Fant has more than 39 years of experience working in the utility industry and has served in a variety of leadership positions at SCANA during his 35-year tenure. In 2004, he was named senior vice president of SCANA, and president and chief operating officer of S.C. Pipeline Corp. and SCG Pipeline Inc. The two companies merged to form Carolina Gas Transmission, an interstate natural gas transportation company in 2006. In February 2015, Carolina Gas Transmission became Dominion Carolina Gas Transmission. Fant serves as executive consultant for DCGT through Fant Consulting LLC. Fant’s past board service includes the Interstate Natural Gas Association of America and the Southern Gas Association. He has served as chair of the Columbia Urban League and is the immediate past chair of the Palmetto Health Foundation. He served on the board of the S.C. Research Authority and on the board of the Columbia Museum of Art. Additionally, he has served on the United Way of the Midlands Board of Directors, serving as chair in 2006 as well as chairing the campaign that raised $9.1 million in 2004.

Fant is currently chairman of the Board of Trustees at Claflin University. He is also a board member of Palmetto Health, a member of the Community Advisory Committee of Palmetto Health Baptist Parkridge Hospital, a member of the Community Advisory Board of BB&T, a member of the Strategic Advisory Group of SCRA and a member of the Community Advisory Council for the President of USC. Finally, Fant is a member of the board for the American Missions Association for African Missions affiliated with the International Churches of Christ.

A model for working together to solve a problem

F

or four years, I had the privilege of serving as one of the volunteers that planned and executed S.C. Mission: Midlands, an event that provided free medical, vision and dental care to anyone in need on a single weekend in August each year.

During its run, S.C. Mission resulted in more than 6,000 patient encounters thanks Mac Bennett, to thousands of volpresident & CEO, United Way of the Midlands unteers. But perhaps more importantly, it served as an example of what a community can accomplish when we work together.

Partners from our three local hospitals systems — Lexington Medical Center, Palmetto Health and Providence Hospitals — and organizations including United Way, Free Medical Clinic, Eau Claire Community Health Cooperative, S.C. Lions Club, S.C. Optometric Association, S.C. Hospital Association, S.C. Medical Association, Welvista and S.C. Thrive made it possible to serve thousands of people, working to assure that these individuals have the care they need to prevent chronic illnesses from becoming crises that tax our resources.

At S.C. Mission, we found that dental care was the most requested service in part because access to dental services has become a challenge for communities across the country.

Moving forward, we began searching for a more permanent health care solution to serve uninsured and underinsured Midlands residents.

As a result, a collaborative developed among United Way and the local hospital systems and soon expanded to include equipment funding from the BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation as well as a space provided by Richland County and services provided by professional development programs at Midlands Technical College and Palmetto Health.

Because of these partnerships, later this year we will expand the services offered in our children’s dental, adult dental and adult vision clinics year-round. Being able to serve even more individuals in a caring, professional environment and directing patients to programs that provide the most effective care are our goals.

The Midlands is a great community, and we do many, many things well. I am convinced that organizations that unite around community issues will find the best solutions.

Making the Midlands a great place to call home

T

he bedrock of every community foundation is its commitment to improving the lives of people in its defined geographic area. For 31 years, Central Carolina Community Foundation has been investing in people and organizations that are improving lives in the Midlands.

Three years ago, the Foundation comJoAnn Turnquist, mitted $1 million president & CEO, to increase literacy Central Carolina Community Foundation attainment across the Midlands. Our investment raised awareness of the impact of low literacy rates and helped bring innovative literacy programming to over 10,000 children and their families in our area.

Beginning in 2014, the final year of our focus on literacy, our board began developing a new funding plan. In what area could the Foundation’s discretionary grants have the greatest impact on the community?

How could our investments leverage additional philanthropic support? Were there assets in our community that, with a small injection of capital, could have a broader impact? Our decade-long relationship with the Knight Foundation, and examples from other cities, informed our work, providing examples and evidence that developed into our new Connected Communities grant initiative.

The Connected Communities grant initiative is designed to build community by funding innovative ideas in three focus areas, identified by the Knight Foundation and Gallup as the most important elements in building community attachment, a key component in economic growth: Vibrant Social Offerings, which support the availability of cultural and community events; Superb Public Spaces, which enhance the beauty and physical setting of the Midlands community; and Welcoming Community,

which supports open and inclusive activities and programs.

Through the Connected Communities grant initiative, the Foundation aims to inspire organizations to engage and invest in our community, building on its existing assets. These grants present opportunities for communitywide collaboration, spearheaded by Midlands nonprofits, to further knit the community together via cooperative philanthropic projects.

The Foundation’s efforts to connect our community go well beyond our grant initiatives. Midlands Gives, the Foundation’s 24-hour online day of giving, unites our community in supporting nonprofits across our 11 counties. During the first two years of this initiative, over 16,000 online gifts totaling close to $2.3 million were donated to 340 nonprofit organizations. In this, our second year, our community ranked seventh in the country for number of donations, a ranking that instilled pride in our collective philanthropic spirit. Together, we achieved something much greater than we could have on our own. On May 3, our community will unite once again when we launch Midlands Gives 2016.

The Foundation also works to connect the community during times of disaster.

In response to the devastating floods that occurred across the Foundation’s 11-county region, Central Carolina Community Foundation has established a national S.C. Flood Relief Fund. 100% of the dollars received will be used to support local nonprofit agencies that are providing short- and long-term support to flood victims. We are honored to work with our region’s mayors, local businesses and other regional funders — connecting those who wish to help with those in need.

We are committed to improving the lives of people across the Midlands by connecting our communities and inspiring philanthropy – work that our Foundation is able to do because of you. Thank you!

ach year, Central Carolina Community Foundation and Columbia Metropolitan Magazine host the Best of Philanthropy Awards to honor and celebrate ordinary people in our community who are making giving a priority for themselves, their family or their business. The winners were to be honored at an event on Nov. 5, 2015 at 6 p.m. at 701 Whaley. The 2015 winners are:

Individual Award:

Francis Herndon Francis Herndon has provided over 80 years of service to Scouting programs in the Midlands.

Local Business Award

Lizard’s Thicket Lizard’s Thicket, a local family-owned and operated restaurant chain with 15 locations in the Midlands, has donated thousands of dollars to support a wide variety of local charities in the community.

Young Professional Award

Stephanie DeFreese In addition to being a mother of five, Stephanie DeFreese serves on multiple boards and spends hours each week volunteering.

Student Group Award

Eau Claire High School Eau Claire High School’s clubs, students and faculty unite to impact various needs in the community, with 81% of the school participating in community service.

Technology tools change the world of fundraising

T

echnology has forever changed the world of nonprofits, just as it has changed the world of business. Computers and cell phones have become primary tools in the world of giving and fundraising.

If you want proof of that, just take a look at the explosive growth of Midlands Gives, a 24-hour online giving event hosted by Central Carolina Community Foundation. The 2015 event last May raised $1,543,203, more than double the amount given in 2014 ($704,000), which was itself a large sum for a firstyear effort.

Midlands Gives showcases organizations whose names may be new to the community. Through online tools, a donor can find an organization that

meets their interests, whether animal rescue, the environment, or a particular area of health care. Incentive prizes were offered by the hour to promote a competitive atmosphere and increase an organization’s total, and visitors to midlandsgives.org could check to see how their favorites were faring.

With a minimum donation of $20, anyone could be a philanthropist. A total of 11,392 gifts were made to 251 nonprofits, and 3,392 donors gave to a nonprofit they had never given to before.

Twitter helped spread the word about Midland Gives, with 5,540 mentions.

Next year’s Midlands Gives event will be on May 3, 2016, and registration for nonprofits is now open.

United Way of the Midlands’ donation system is based on a digital platform. Both the United Way and Central Carolina Community Foundation have “donate now” or “give now” buttons on their websites to make giving easy and immediate.

Bidr, developed by a Charleston company, is a text app that allows people to keep bidding on silent auction items even when they aren’t in the room – or even attending the event at all. Rather than writing down bids on a sheet next to the item, bids are made by cell phone. When a bidder’s offer is topped, she receives a text with opportunity to bid again.

Lexington Medical Center was using Bidr in October for its Women’s Night Out to raise funds for breast cancer, said Barbara Willm, vice president of development and community relations. “You can put the auction online and people can bid that are not at the event,” she said.

The bidder does not have to have a smart phone or even a phone at all.

“They can use an iPad that a staff person or volunteer will have,” said Dana Fulmer, a fundraising consultant and former nonprofit executive.

The ease of bidding can lead to more funds raised, and checking out at the end of the evening is much easier. “It tallies each person’s purchases, an incredible time saver,” Fulmer said.

Fulmer was a guest at an event but had to leave early to take care of her toddler. She said Bidr let her stay in on the auction, letting her know if she had been outbid and also telling her about items that had not been bid on.

Bidders register with a credit card, which can be used to pay for the items won. Or they can pay with a check or another credit card when they check out.

Another fundraising tool, offered by Bidr and others, is texting to donate. This works well with a captive audience, such as at a football game, Fulmer said.

The #PrayforCharleston text to donate campaign has raised more than $128,000 for the Mother Emanuel Hope Fund.

“It’s cost-effective on all ends,” Fulmer said. “It allows you to meet the donors where they are. . . . our years ago, the United Way of the Midlands, local hospitals and medical professional groups teamed up to offer free medical, dental and vision care to uninsured and underinsured people.

The initial two-day event, in August 2011, was held at the USC Coliseum in downtown Columbia. What happened next was unprecedented.

“I got there about 4 a.m.,” said Mac Bennett, United Way president and CEO. “There were already 2,000 people in line. By 6 a.m., the line stretched around the mezzanine and onto the sidewalk.”

It quickly became apparent that S.C. Medical Mission: Midlands’ planners had touched a major nerve in the community.

“We learned from that event,” Bennett said. “We had an unmet need for dental and vision services for people who could not pay.”

The next year they moved it to the S.C. State Fairgrounds, with easier access and parking. They added more providers of dental services, as that was the area of highest demand.

After four years of providing services through Mission, the three local

hospital systems and United Way got together to assess. “We said, we’ve got a problem here. And two days a year doesn’t solve it,” Bennett said.

The result is the Health Collaborative, which will offer dental and vision services year round for people who need them.

United Way of the Midlands, Lexington Medical Center, Palmetto Health and Providence Hospital. BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina Foundation provided a grant to purchase equipment for a new dental clinic to serve adults.

Richland County allocated space for dental and vision services in the health department on Hampton Street. The hospitals partnered with United Way to pay for renovation of the space, Bennett said. The hospitals and United Way will support the $1 million annual operating budget, which brings funding together that has been providing different services in the community.

Midlands Technical College will provide hygienists from their training program and Palmetto Health’s dental residency program will also be involved. The children’s dental clinic, which has been operating at the Richland health department for three years, already has 140 volunteer dentists. A full-time dentist is being hired for the adult and children’s clinics in the Richland County space.

“We’re working collaboratively to develop a facility to take care of the most vulnerable of the community,” said Vince Ford, chief community health officer of Palmetto Health.

“Those are the beauties of the project.”

He said that no one in the health care system had realized the extent of the needs.

There’s nothing else like this, Bennett said. The Health Collaborative combines a public space, nonprofits and private foundations, hospitals, higher education and volunteer and paid providers to meet the needs of the community.

“It’s wonderful when the health care systems in the area look for creative ways to improve the health status of everybody in the community,” said Barbara Willm, vice president of development and community relations at Lexington Medical Center.

Willm and Ford both pointed out that expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act would have provided care for many of these needs.

However, South Carolina chose not to accept the additional Medicaid coverage, and so the health systems and nonprofits fill in the gaps.

focusing on preventative care, Ford said, with the hope of keeping patients from making trips to the emergency room with extreme tooth pain. “If we’re only doing extractions, that’s not where we want to be.”

Bennett says the Health Collaborative will provide considerable increases in both dental services and dental hygiene services. The goal is to get the new space open by the end of 2015.

When patients need medical services, they will be sent to the Free Medical Clinic, just 300 to 400 yards away from the dental clinic.

United Way is the fiscal agent for the Health Collaborative, with the hospitals joining in to support the renovation and operating budget.

“A lot of people continue to struggle,” Ford said. “They are suffering and will end up in the ER. That’s not the place for them. We want to move upstream and keep them healthy.”

The collaborators will reevaluate Medical Mission to see what it should look like, Bennett said. Volunteers truly enjoyed helping with it and were never in short supply.

“You won’t find many communities where everybody puts their own agendas aside and works on what’s important,” Willm said. “We are so blessed to be a part of it.” •

What makes this home Connected Communities grants target programs that make people love where they live

W

hat makes people want to live in a particular city? How can the Midlands find out what people are looking for and provide those things?

Those were among the questions the Central Carolina Community Foundation had been asking over the past few years.

“People won’t invest in their community unless they want to live here,” said David Laird, director of community impact at the foundation.

In 2010, the Knight Foundation had included Columbia in its Soul of the Community report. Laird and others at the foundation realize they had a place to start. The study showed what people in Columbia valued most: Social offerings: availability of social community events, vibrant night life and arts and cultural opportunities Openness: a welcoming community for people of all ages, family status, racial and ethnic backgrounds.

Why not focus the foundation’s grants on projects that make these characteristics better?

“We can’t fix a problem, but we can build on our assets and strengths,” Laird said. “We can make it the place we want to live.”

And that’s the way the foundation’s Connected Communities grants have gone this year. A playground certified for children with disabilities? Check. An interactive history of Columbia’s Jewish heritage? Check. Taking S.C. Philharmonic concerts to places you’d never expect? Check!

The programs funded are all new this year. They are big-board ideas with unique approaches.

“By connecting people emotionally to their communities, they will be more prone to invest in things like the arts,” said JoAnn Turnquist, president and CEO of

the Central Carolina Community Foundation. “We want to make the place they call home a better place.”

The groups receiving grants were required to raise 25% of the award on their own, and that has led to new philanthropy. As an example, the Community Playground Project of Kershaw County got its first donation from the Lugoff Fire Department, which gave $20,000.

The foundation’s board has been energized and engaged through its involvement with the Connected Communities grants, Turnquist said.

“The Knight study showed how people became attached to their community and how that impacted the economy of the community,” said Catherine Kennedy, chair of the foundation’s Community Impact Committee. “We want to focus on making the Midlands a place where people want to live and stay.”

requests. They were energized by the people requesting grants and their vision.

For the Midlands to be a welcoming, open community, it needs things to do and places to do them in. “Having that as a goal encourages people to think of what Columbia can be, and how can I and my organization make it that way,” Kennedy said.

This year, grants of up to $50,000 were made, with a 25% match required. Next year, the maximum grant will be $75,000 with a 30% match.

Columbia Museum of Art: From Marilyn to Mao — ­ Andy Warhol’s Famous Faces: Andy Warhol was all about identity and celebrity, said Joelle Ryan-Cook, deputy director and director of external affairs at the Columbia Museum of Art. And isn’t that what social media is about?

With many of Warhol’s famous portraits on display, the museum wanted to connect with people who might not participate ordinarily.

A community gallery just outside the Warhol exhibit brought in local mentorartists to work with younger people. In the

gallery, visitors were allowed to make selfies with the Warhol works – something that generally isn’t permitted. “The ability to share our experience is important,” Ryan-Cook said. “The amount of activity through social media is incredible.”

The museum had an Arts and Drafts program that drew 2,100 people to take part in “make your own Warhol stations” and to join in creating a video about which Warhol piece they identified with.

The core was to take Warhol and create a community-based discussion. “Some of it was very deep,” Ryan-Cook said. “Some said, ‘I just like Judy Garland.’”

Kershaw County Community Playground The playground at 519 Whitehead Road in Lugoff is truly a community project, said Laurey Carpenter, project chairman. The ADA accessible playground is the first in Kershaw County, with the next nearest one 35 miles away.

“We were required to match 25% of our $50,000 grant,” Carpenter said. “We did that in seven days.”

Raising $300,000 in all for the quarteracre play area, the project received help from the Lugoff Fire Department, Camden Middle School, SCANA, Target Distribution Center and on and on. ore than 282 businesses and organizations donated money and/or volunteer time.

The playground, open to all children, will have rubberized matting, an access ramp, climbing walls and a zip line. It is designed to encourage play by children with physical handicaps as well as emotional issues such as autism. There’s a ropes course, a walking plank for balance and swings at all levels.

And with a $10,000 surplus, the group is already looking at adding an inclusive playground, strictly for handicapped children, Carpenter said.

S.C. Philharmonic Flashmob Concert Series Sometimes people are nervous about going to an orchestra concert, said Rhonda Hunsinger, executive director of the Philharmonic. But suppose the orchestra came to them?

The first concert in this series took place at Irmo’s Okra Strut. The orchestra gathered, with a baton on the podium and a sign saying, “Conduct us.” People young and old responded quickly, including a tiny boy who conducted with a stick. Each guest conductor would raise the baton and the orchestra played loudly.

The point is to make music approachable, Hunsinger explained. The orchestra performed familiar music that is often heard in other settings.

Five more flashmob concerts are planned.

State Street Beautification Project The city of West Columbia is working to make State Street look more attractive, and the grant it received will help beautify the 100 block, said Brian Carter, deputy city administrator.

“We want it to be a catalyst, a vibrant and interactive public space,” Carter said. The city is taking out asphalt, moving Dumpsters and adding color and plants.

The aim is to landscape the area and add a public art piece. It won’t be a park, but a place to visit and share.

City officials are hoping the beautification effort will spread to other parts of State Street, an area of older storefronts that are ripe for renovation.

Saluda Shoals Foundation At its St. Andrews Road expansion, Saluda Shoals Park in the Irmo area has newly opened soccer fields build on a reclaimed industrial site. The grant will help the park landscape a new entrance and connecting road from the St.

“We will be working on reforestation and beautification of the industrial site,” Patton explained. Along with a home for soccer tournaments, the park will have tennis courts and a new boat ramp.

Shrubs and native plants will be added and the fields will be fenced and gated. Oak, cypress and crape myrtles will be planted as well as azaleas and roses.

Historic Columbia Foundation: Columbia Jewish Heritage Initiative Columbia’s Jewish community has often been left out of the city’s history, said Robin Waites, Historic Columbia Foundation executive director. The Jewish Heritage Initiative will involve collecting images, conducting interviews and producing a walking tour and a printed piece that explain this history.

The Jewish Historical Society of South Carolina will meet in Columbia this year and will include a program on early Jews in the city, Waites said. The grant will help take this story to a broader audience.

“We’ll be telling a story that hasn’t been told,” she said. “It gets rid of misconceptions about the community and breaks down barriers.”

The foundation has identified 50 people it wants to interview for oral history, and volunteers from the Jewish community have been trained to gather their information. This builds capacity through volunteerism, Waites said.

Public programs are planned as well as a series of walking tours of 40 sites and a web-based tour with historic images and oral interviews.

“We want to get Jewish stories embedded in the overall Columbia story,” Waites said. • www.columbiabusinessreport.com

Greatest need: Our single greatest need is for unrestricted funds to support our operations, which allow us to expand our work in the Midlands. Financial donations are just as important to our ministry as picking up a hammer.

2014-2015 Top achievements: Central S.C. Habitat for Humanity has broadened from building houses to serving entire neighborhoods. As an NR affiliate, when we build or renovate a home, we survey the entire block to identify needs of existing homeowners and find ways in which we can partner to build a thriving neighborhood. Exterior repairs, weatherization and yard cleanup have been some of the ways Habitat is changing the landscape in which we operate.

In addition to the 18+ households we served as an NR affiliate, in 2015 Central SC Habitat for Humanity served 190 households (current mortgage-holders). We moved eight new families into homes this year and welcomed 35 new partner families into our program; 60 satisfied mortgages. Through our programs of repair, counseling and homeownership, we served 150 individuals this past year.

2015-2016 Goals:. With a continued focus on strengthening our internal operations, capacity and service-delivery, we have a much focused external agenda that includes: • Continuing to address the needs of neighborhoods, not just individual homes, in order to build thriving communities.

In the year following entry into MIRCI housing and services, inpatient psychiatric hospitalizations dropped by 86% and emergency department visits for mental illness dropped by 61%.

2016 Goals: MIRCI is applying for a new HUD Continuum of Care for the Homeless grant, to provide housing for an additional 20 chronically homeless individuals using the Housing First model.

In partnership with United Way of the Midlands, MIRCI is seeking to develop supportive housing for young men in transition, ages 17 to 24.

MIRCI will continue to reduce inpatient psychiatric hospitalizations and emergency department visits for individuals in its housing and services.

Geographic area or specific population served: United Way of the Midlands partners with agencies, businesses, community leaders and individuals to determine and respond to the critical human service needs in each community we serve. With these partners, we provide programs and resources to improve the education, financial stability and health of people in Calhoun, Fairfield, Lexington, Newberry, Orangeburg and Richland counties.

Greatest need: UWM focuses on three primary areas: early education, especially literacy; financial stability, including homelessness; and improving access to health care.

2015 Top achievements: • In 2015, United Way deepened its focus on early learning with the goal of ensuring our young students are reading at grade level by third grade. Through the Midlands Reading Consortium, over 400 volunteers met weekly with nearly 600 kindergarteners through second-graders to provide one-on-one support with reading. Ninety-seven percent of those students successfully progressed to the next grade.

• In 2014-2015, United Way secured $500,000 in new contracts with City of Columbia to operate the Inclement Weather Center and improve coordination of housing and services in the region. This was the successful inaugural IWC season in partnership with Midlands Housing Alliance, Transitions and Salvation Army. The IWC operated 83 nights serving 754 individuals with overnight provisions.

• United Way provided dental care to nearly 3,000 people. The dental clinic expansion at the Richland County Administration Building was approved by County Council in late July 2015. Services have already been expanded to create 50% increase in dental care in Richland and Lexington counties and partners have agreed to a long-term funding plan. Also, UWM partnered with licensed optometric physicians to provide more than 250 individuals in Richland County with free comprehensive eye care (eye and vision exams, prescriptions, eyeglasses).

2016 Goals: United Way will partner with other organizations in the Midlands to end veteran homelessness by the close of 2015 and end chronic homelessness one year later in 2016 as part of the Zero: 2016 movement.

United Way will also renovate, design and equip a new adult dental clinic and relocate an eye clinic at Richland County Health Department. This will include the expansion of services at the dental clinic located at Lexington County Health Department. United Way of the Midlands will design, equip and open its new headquarters to meet the needs of its operations and enhance resources for the community in the spring of 2016.
