The Greater Chapin Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Center promotes commerce, community and culture through the service and leadership of our diverse membership. Education rom extraordinary academic achievements and accolades to new opportunities and community outreach, Lexington-Richland District Five schools serve as a cornerstone in the Chapin community.

High School Officials See High Achievement At the high school level, officials saw noteworthy recognitions, construction on the new Spring Hill High School and exciting upgrades at award-winning Chapin High School. U.S. News & World Report, Newsweek and the Washington Post all ranked Chapin High among the best for college preparedness, overall performance and academic rigor. The district’s new Center for Advanced Technical Studies, which opened in August 2012, earned the prestigious national Project Lead The Way certification in its first year. The school offers biomedical sciences and a variety of other programs that focus on science, technology, engineering and math. “It’s highly unusual that a program would receive

Project Lead The Way certification in its first year,” Center Director Dr. James Couch said. “I think what the program has been able to accomplish here speaks to the quality of the curriculum, students and teachers.” Nearly 70 students are currently enrolled in The Center’s Biomedical Science program, which is expected to add a second instructor and grow to 150 students in the 2013-2014 school year. The certification provides these students with an opportunity to receive college credit at PLTW-affiliated colleges and universities, including the University of South Carolina. As part of the rigorous certification process, a team of state, university and school officials visited The Center to review the program and facilities. Couch said the team noted the school’s impressive equipment, teaching supplies, students, and teachers as part of their evaluation.
“The PLTW certification gives us notoriety,” added Julie Krusen, a National Board Certified teacher with The Center’s biomedical science program. “We’re following national guidelines, so we know we’re preparing students for that next step.” The program includes a sequence of courses and hands-on, real-world problem-solving activities. Students explore the concepts of human medicine and are introduced to topics such as physiology, genetics, microbiology and public health. Through activities, like dissecting a heart, students examine the processes, structures and interactions of the human body. They also explore prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases, working collaboratively to investigate and design solutions to address current health challenges such as fighting cancer with nanotechnology. Students enrolled in the biomedical science program cited the desire to pursue further studies in biology in college and enjoyed the preparation and handson learning experiences they had at the Center. The classes are more lab-based instead of relying primarily on textbooks. For many, the difference from being in a traditional classroom setting was a welcome change.

Education Elementary and Middle Schools Leading the Pack Chapin Middle School continued its legacy of excellence. The school was one of three in District Five to earn the latest state Palmetto Gold Awards for academic achievement and closing the achievement gap. “A Gold Award in both categories is a real testament to the hard work and dedication of everyone involved in our great school.” Middle School Principal Anna Miller At the Elementary School level, Lake Murray Elementary also earned Palmetto Gold Awards in both categories, while Chapin Elementary received Gold for overall performance and Silver for closing the achievement gap. Chapin Elementary students were also recognized for their charitable efforts. A fourth grader touched many by donating money she collected for her birthday to the school’s fundraiser, and first graders wrote letters to cancer patients as part of a project with Lexington Medical Center. Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner stresses that education goes beyond academics. “Our goal at District Five is to not only provide quality education, but also to develop productive citizens who contribute to a fast-changing global society.”
Higher Educational Opportunities Chapin is close to several two-year and four-year institutions of higher learning. Midlands Technical College offers a number of technical training, certification programs and associate degrees that prepare people for the workforce. Many students opt to attend MTC to take their core academic classes and then transfer to a four-year institution to complete their Bachelor’s degree. The University of South Carolina’s flagship campus is located in Columbia, offering 324 degree programs through its 14 degree-granting colleges and schools. Situated near the state capitol, the university is expanding west toward the Congaree River in support of its research initiatives in nanotechnology, health sciences,

Future FuelsTM, the environment and information technologies. This innovation district known as Innovista includes a master plan for policy, physical infrastructure and support elements for job creation and growth in the knowledge economy. Columbia is also home to several higher-ed insti-
tutions, including Columbia College, Allen University, Benedict College, South University, Columbia International University, Southern Theological Seminary and the University of Phoenix, to name a few. Just north of Chapin in Newberry is Newberry College, a small Lutheran-affiliate liberal arts college.

For Your Good Health Chapin has a wealth of healthcare options for every age and need hether you are looking for a great family doctor or need specialized ambulatory care, Chapin has a wealth of healthcare providers available to take care of your health and wellness needs. Chapin is home to a number of medical practices, including dentists, pediatricians, chiropractors, orthodontists, counseling, physical and massage therapy, rehabilitation and veterinary offices. The Lexington County Health Department also provides healthcare services to families and individuals who reside within the county. And there are three pharmacies available to manage prescription and medical supply needs in the community. Lexington Medical Center Urgent Care, Lake Ridge Family Practice and Chapin Women’s Care are conveniently located on Columbia Avenue and are part of the Lexington Medical Center’s county-wide health care system that includes six community medical centers and employs a staff of 5,900 health care professionals. The Urgent Care provides outpatient lab, x-rays, CT

and mammography services in Chapin, and minutes down the road, Lexington Medical’s main hospital is a 414-bed, state-of-the-art Level III trauma center, which offers a variety of diagnostic, therapeutic, preventative, maternity and surgical services. The network also includes comprehensive cardiovascular care, an occupational health center, the largest nursing home in the Carolinas and more than 60 physician practices. Also close by to Chapin is the Palmetto Health Baptist Parkridge campus. Current outpatient facilities house Parkridge Urgent Care and Surgery Centers along with numerous physician practices. And opening in 2014, a new 76-bed full-service hospital with 24/7 emergency care will provide high quality, state-of-theart care close to home, school and work for residents and visitors alike. As part of the area’s largest, most comprehensive health care provider, Palmetto Health offers a wide array of health services throughout the Midlands, including general, acute and critical care as well as numerous specialty physicians providing the full array of treatment from primary to emergency care and

New Heart Center is Welcome Addition to Lexington County Lexington Medical Center in Wes t Columbia began offering a full range of cardiovascular services, includin g open heart surgery and therapeutic cath eterizations, in 2012. During the progra m’s first year, the heart surgery team per formed 146 open heart surgeries. In its second year of complete cardiac care, the heart center is focusing on growing the progra m’s technology and services as well as exp anding into electrophysiology, a sub-spe cialty of cardiology that focuses on the trea tment of abnormal heart rhythms. beyond. Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital and Heart Hospital offer exceptional care by health professionals specializing in pediatrics and a full range of cardiac services. In case of emergency, Lexington County Public Safety provides emergency medical services in the community, with 24-hour, fully staffed ambulance maintained at each of Chapin’s three fire stations. Recreation Abounds here are plenty of recreational opportunities throughout Chapin. As the Capital of Lake Murray, obviously the lake is a big draw for residents and visitors alike with more than 500 miles of shoreline. Whether you enjoy water skiing and swimming or prefer a more casual boat ride with friends, the lake is a boaters’ paradise with several marinas operating along the shores to assist with boat rentals, launching ramps, gas, bait, snacks and other necessities for a good day on the lake. Sailing is also popular on Lake Murray, and there are two active sail clubs that sponsor regattas, sailing lessons and club activities throughout the year. Fishing is another popular pastime on the lake with the casual weekend fishermen to professional anglers coming out to catch a variety of species for bragging rights and top

dollar prizes. For those who appreciate boat cruises for viewing spectacular sunsets or marveling at the purple martins who congregate each summer to Bomb Island, there are two boats that accommodate larger groups - Southern Patriot and The Spirit of Lake Murray. One of South Carolina’s most scenic state parks, Dreher Island State Park spans three islands, 348 acres and provides access to 12 miles of Lake Murray shoreline. Visitors will find recreational water activities, nature trails and some of the best striped and large-mouth bass fishing spots, all only 30 miles from Columbia. For those who like to hike, you can check out the Palmetto Trail, which passes near Chapin. The 315 miles of trails and passages offer single-day or multi-day trip opportunities to experience the rich history and diversity of culture and geography

Chapin’s Burgeoning Arts Colony Whether you prefer visual arts or live performing arts, Chapin has som ething for everyone. Chapin’s Community Theatre, the Dutch Fork Chorale, and Cha pin High School’s band, choirs, orchestra and theatrical performances offer a variety of opportunities to appreciate and suppor t the arts. Chapin also boasts several art gall eries that regularly feature works by awa rd-winning local artists. The Crooked Cre ek Art League hosts an annual juried sho w, and the Potters of Chapin hold an ann ual pottery sale each Thanksgiving wee kend at the Chapin Chamber. Several loca l artists regularly display their paintings, photography and mixed media works of art at the Chamber House, including the Cro oked Creek Art League’s Spotlight Arti st of the Month.

Crooked Creek Park is an integral part of the Chapin community and serves as a recreational and social hub for Chapin residents. The park’s amenities include a 53,000 square-foot Community Center with full gymnasium, racquetball courts,

fitness areas, indoor walking track and meeting rooms; athletic fields and tennis courts; picnic facilities; paved and unpaved walking trails; and playgrounds. Crooked Creek Park also serves as the Council on Aging site offering Senior Support Services, a nutrition site and Meals-on Wheels to seniors in the Chapin community. And the park will expand its footprint in 2014 with the construction of new ball fields and facilities at nearby Epting Camp. If you enjoy golf, Chapin is close to two fantastic golf courses, Timberlake Country Club and Mid Carolina Country Club. Timberlake is a picturesque course located along Lake Murray, and Mid Carolina is in neighboring Prosperity right off Interstate 26. In
addition, the Midlands is home to more than 20 public courses throughout the region, providing plenty of opportunities to enjoy a round of golf. The biggest annual event in Chapin is the Labor Day Parade and Festival, which features a number of family-friendly events throughout the first weekend in September. From fireworks and boat parades to arts and crafts, the annual Chapin Library Book Sale, music concerts, and of course, the 100-plus unit Labor Day Parade, some 30,000 people come out to celebrate this annual holiday in Chapin style. Over the years, we’ve enjoyed hosting national, state and local politicians to our Labor Day Festivities so it’s always fun to see who will show up each year.

#6 COLONIAL LIFE ARENA From Gamecock basketball games and professional bull riding to concerts, conventions, plays and the circus, Colonial Life Arena is a hub for sports and entertainment. This one-of-a-kind facility is the largest arena in South Carolina, with 18,000 seats, 41 suites, and top-notch food and beverages. #4 SOUTH CAROLINA STATE HOUSE Don’t miss a chance to visit the magnificent South Carolina State House, the Greek Revival domed structure that is the centerpiece of downtown Columbia. The building is a testament to survival, having withstood Civil War torches, countless rallies and stormy politics. Look for the six stars on the outside of the building that mark spots where Union cannonballs struck. The beautiful grounds are home to numerous monuments, and the inside is filled with marble, gran-

Recreation Abounds #7 LAKE MURRAY The Columbia region, also known as Lake Murray Country, is home to great boating, fishing and just about any kind of watersports. Learn how to sail, scuba-dive, water-ski or just cruise on this watery playground. You can camp, lounge on the beach, dine at waterfront marinas, or take a daytime or evening cruise. One popular trip is to Bomb Island, where thousands of purple martins converge in late summer on the largest roosting sanctuary in North America. South Carolina has perfected several barbecue styles, and you can find them throughout the region. Most “joints” have buffets or menus that include savory barbecue, fried chicken, hearty side dishes, hush puppies and dessert. Everybody has a favorite place, so just ask.

#8 SOUTH CAROLINA GAMECOCK SPORTS There’s nothing better than a sunny, warm afternoon in a stadium filled with frenzied Gamecock fans, and that’s what you’re likely to find at the University of South Carolina football or baseball games. Plus, South Carolina fans have tailgating down to an art. The spreads outside the stadiums are worth the trip alone.

hapin is conveniently located in the Midlands of South Carolina, in the northern part of Lexington County near the center of the state. We are close enough to South Carolina’s capital city of Columbia that many residents commute the 30 minutes to work in governmental, professional and other occupations in Columbia.
A Convenient Location C Airports The Columbia Metropolitan Airport is just 22 miles east on I-26. Annually, the airport serves more than 1.1 million passengers and processes more than 66,000 tons of cargo. Jim Hamilton Aircraft Inc., at 1400 Jim Hamilton Boulevard, is a general aviation facility with tie-down capabilities. Newberry County Airport, just 24 miles west of Chapin, at 1239 Airport Road, has available 100-octane fuel, 4,000-foot runway, tie-down capabilities, hanger space, and rental car facilities.

Highways The town of Chapin sits just two miles from Interstate 26. Road 48, Columbia Avenue (exit 91), connects the center of town to I-26. U.S. Highway 76, or Chapin Road, runs parallel to Columbia Avenue and also runs through the middle of town.
Topography We are located in the lower Piedmont Plateau, which is characterized by moderate to steep slopes with gentler, rolling slopes near Lake Murray.

In its Demographic Summary Report, the COG reports the following population statistics from 2010: • Population within a five-mile radius around Chapin: 15,497 • Population within a 10-mile radius around Chapin: 51,167 • Population within a 15-mile radius around Chapin: 153,751 Chapin is in Lexington County, but the Greater Chapin area includes parts of both Richland and Newberry counties and is bounded by Lake Murray and the Broad River. Rates are expressed in mills, which are equivalent to dollars per $1,000 of assessed value. Assessment ratios are set by state law. Lexington County offers tax abatement of county taxes for qualified investments and new businesses.
Water &Sewer The town of Chapin owns and operates a regional sewer service and water systems in several developments on and near the lake. The City of Columbia provides water service to the Town of Chapin as well as several areas near the town.
Zoning The town of Chapin enforces a zoning ordinance that encompasses regulations regarding tree protection, preservation and placement of signs. Outside the town limits, Lexington County zoning regulations apply.
Taxes The South Carolina Department of Revenue assesses property values for manufacturing, distribution and corporate headquarters classifications. All other assessments are the responsibility of local authorities.
Income The Chapin community has one of South Carolina’s lowest poverty rates. The average income per capita is the second highest in the state.

Chapin – A Great Place to Do Business hapin enjoys a diverse business community, with many small businesses and entrepreneurs as well as larger companies that supply products and services to customers throughout the United States. In our Chapin footprint, we have national franchisees, large-scale information technology providers, art galleries, spas and salons, quaint shops and restaurants as well as a number of professional service providers, including banks, insurance, lawyers, financial advisors, real estate, engineers, construction and landscaping services. Chapin residents make up roughly 30 percent of the existing and new nuclear workforce for South Carolina Electric and Gas. SCE&G and Santee Cooper, the stateowned public utility, operate the VC Summer Nuclear Plant, which is adding two new AP1000 Westinghouse reactors to their power generating capacity and creating an estimated 800 permanent jobs. Construction at the site has added more than 3,000 highly skilled workers, many of whom have chosen to live in Chapin. Lexington County recently unveiled plans to build a new Business and Technology Park off Columbia Avenue, the main gateway into Chapin from Interstate 26.
