After serving as law clerk to the Honorable Luke N. Brown of the 14th Judicial Circuit and the Honorable William H. Ballenger of the 10th Judicial Circuit, Callas worked as an assistant state prosecuting attorney in Richland County. Nicholas Clekis started his career at a general law practice, where he touched a variety of practice areas. He settled on practicing insurance defense before realizing that was an unsatisfactory choice.

“At that point, I decided to hang my own shingle, so I could represent people against big business to try to make a difference,” he says. “And I like dealing with people on a personal basis.”

Clekis is the founder of Clekis Law Firm in North Charleston, where has practiced since 1988.

He attributes his success to the patience and discipline that comes from years of practicing.

“The wheels of justice grind slowly, and it can be frustrating for clients to wait for their cases to be resolved and for attorneys to deal with adversarial opponents,” he says.

Despite the hard work, Clekis finds his joy in simply helping his clients.

“The fact that you have made a difference in someone’s life by making something good happen out of something bad is rewarding,” he says.

Don Gibson was inspired to become a lawyer after an early career picking cotton for $2 a day and working in cotton mills, where he experienced firsthand the lack of recourse for an injury.
