Let’s Recognize

What God is Doing Among Us! The story of the Prodigal Son (Luke 15:11-32) is so familiar to us. We have read it, studied it and heard countless sermons on it. I would like to point out an often-overlooked component of the text. It is one word used four times in verses 24-31. It is the word celebrate.

We have 455 churches in the State Convention of Baptists in Indiana family. We need to celebrate God’s activity. You will find in this issue stories and perspectives about the good things that He is doing. That is the main thing. As we celebrate, we acknowledge what God is doing in and through us, His church.

Margaret E. Gillaspie

April 1, 1934-April 13, 2017 Indiana WMU Director 1968-1996 Margaret Gillaspie started her ministry as Indiana Woman’s Missionary Union Director on September 1, 1968. During her years of service, she began a number of WMU works in Indiana churches, encouraged leaders to be effective in their mission endeavors, trained leaders to multiply themselves by training others and left an impressive legacy of ministry.

Those who served under her leadership knew her to be a leader with a purpose. Mary Fullhart remembered, “Serving with Margaret was such a blessing. As a leader, she became my mentor, then my best friend. A great Christian always willing to give herself to help others.”

“Margaret Gillaspie was truly dedicated to WMU and Women’s Ministry. She promoted the work around Indiana and had a positive role in the Southern Baptist Convention. God truly used her for His glory. Her countenance was marked by a pleasant smile that magnified Jesus,” shared Dr. Charles W. Sullivan, SCBI’s Executive Director when Margaret retired.

Margaret Gillaspie’s passion to further missions education in Indiana continued after she retired from SCBI. In her honor, the officers of the Indiana WMU created the Margaret E. Gillaspie (MEG) Endowment Fund. To date the fund has received more than $23,000 in donations. The MEG fund has provided scholarships for children, who are involved in WMU missions groups, to attend Mission Adventure Camp. Funds are also used to train workers for missions education at all age levels, purchase WMU literature for local churches and send WMU volunteers on mission trips with North American and International Mission Boards. Donations can be made to the MEG Fund at www.scbi.org/megfund.

Highland Lakes Baptist Camp

Celebrate: New Worship Center

The current Highland Lakes staff team began our journey in 2014.

We set a four-year course to learn, challenge, grow and culminate with celebration in 2017. Undertaking management of one of SCBI’s most valued assets, we learned about the resources, people, needs and opportunities of Highland Lakes. In 2015 we sought the Father’s guidance to meet the challenge of growing the camp’s ministries. We envisioned the opportunity to grow in 2016 by expanding our conference and training capability with a new Worship Center.

Excitement for the prospect of a new Worship Center to expand ministry at camp spread like wildfire.

Churches, individuals, families, organizations and trusts from around the state caught the vision and followed the Father’s lead in funding construction of the 6,800 square-foot building that accommodates over 400 people. The Worship Center not only allows us to serve a larger venue, it also gives us the flexibility to utilize space for smaller venues and indoor recreation.

We are getting ready for a full summer of camps. The Center is completed and paid off. We are celebrating!

We will formally dedicate the structure when we host the 2017 SCBI Annual Convention in October. Plan to come and celebrate with us, as we continue the journey helping others discover, develop and deploy a transformed life in Christ!

STUDENT FUSION

Dear Indiana Baptists, As I write this note, we are entering the second month of using the new Worship Center here at HLBC. I am awed by the tremendous blessing we as Indiana Baptists have been given in this great new resource. The journey began little over a year ago and today, as I type this note, I sit in the completed 400+ seat auditorium. The most amazing part of this story is that there is not one penny owed on this new building. God and God’s people were faithful to give and pray so this Worship Center could be a reality!

It has been beyond amazing to see the faces of those who have used the new facility as they enter for the first time. We have already seen God move in the lives of people who have gathered in the building to worship. I can only imagine what the Lord will do in and through this great resource as we enter camp season in just a few weeks.

As your Director of Operations, I am honored, blessed and humbled to be a part of what God is doing and going to do through your Highland Lakes Baptist Camp.

Church Planting

Gospel Grove Church in Bargersville Although giant redwoods of California look massive and indestructible, one tree cannot remain standing against even a slight wind. The only reason they stand so sturdily is that the roots of individual redwood trees intertwine underground. Each tree is supported by many.

This same concept brings people together to reach the small town of Bargersville, Indiana, where an estimated 90% have no saving faith in Christ. In 2016, Josh Crisp, his wife Bethany and two young daughters planted their lives in Bargersville. Josh started a church last summer, after achieving an MDiv from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary. Pastor Josh announced to the 63 people in attendance that to date 23 people had made decisions for Christ! These decisions were the result of week-by-week sharing the Good News of Jesus Christ, assisting Bargersville with community events, and a spring carnival at a local school on Good Friday, the first big outreach event for the church. Fortunately, churches in West Virginia and Illinois assisted Gospel Grove, whose members were there in full force. They served the community with a barbecue sandwich meal, bounce houses, face painting, an Easter Egg hunt, cotton candy, snow cones, and a drawing for prizes donated by local businesses. Pastor Josh concluded the carnival with a presentation, using an Evangecube to visually demonstrate the simple, but powerful, message of the Gospel. Seven adults indicated their desire to receive Christ in their lives.

Preparing

Worship Leaders This April, God brought 27 very gifted future leaders to Exalt Him Student Worship Retreat, where they were equipped for ministry.

These students from ten Indiana churches will make a difference in His church as they step up as leaders. “I’ve never learned so much musically and, more importantly, spiritually in such a short time,” reflected one student. Another

student noted their desire to start a worship band at their church.

Speaker Bryan Sullivan, church planter of Redeemed Community Church in central Indiana, reminded students and adult leaders that preparation for worship begins before Sunday morning. Lexington Road, a group from Boyce College in Louisville,

led worship, taught technical aspects of playing an instrument and demonstrated a caring attitude in sharing their knowledge with students. Classes held during the retreat presented musical aspects of worship, as well as technical features of practical arts.

Indiana Women Blessed at

Transformed Retreat Earlier this year, women gathered for the Transformed retreat. In March, Graceland Baptist Church, New Albany, hosted Transformed, with Leighann McCoy as keynote speaker. Katie Orr addressed women who attended Transformed at Sunnycrest Baptist Church, Marion, in April. Women of all ages, from young moms with newborns to great grandmothers, attended the two events in order to seek God’s truth and apply it to their lives. Many committed to follow Christ in faith and obedience.

A major obstacle occurred in New Albany when two accidents caused the nearby interstate to shut down. Women trying to return for the evening worship after dinner were either delayed or not able to get back. The service began 45 minutes late, but those who were able to attend commented on how powerfully God’s Spirit ministered during the session.

At both venues, women gained truth tools, practical applications and encouragement from the worship, breakout sessions and fellowship.

Missionaries told what God is doing around the world and around Indiana. This year mission projects accompanied the two weekends.

In New Albany, ladies brought baby items to help the Choices Life Resource Center as they open another location ministering to women and families. In Marion, attendees donated items needed for the Women’s Life House in Huntington. The impact of the Transformed retreat continues as women reach their communities and serve in their local churches.

Committed Cooperation

Let Me Explain...

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come on you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.

ACTS 1:8 I am grateful for your partnership in the Gospel and appreciate your faithfulness in ministry. It’s amazing what God does when His people work together. As a pastor, I saw the power of a team each week as the church labored together accomplishing the mission. I see the same thing with the State Convention of Baptists in Indiana, every week, as our churches partner together for the Gospel.

Recently, on three different occasions, Indiana Baptists asked me how the Cooperative Program works. This isn’t an unusual question, but was a little surprising in that all three people were committed Southern Baptists and solid leaders in their churches.

This got me to thinking: what if we have not done enough to help people understand the Cooperative Program (CP)? So, here is an idea that you might be interested in. How about scheduling a “Cooperative Program Sunday?”

I would be thrilled to come to your congregation expressing gratitude for your leadership and your church’s giving through the CP. We could take 30 minutes to explain how it all works and what is accomplished by working together. It could be a great way to celebrate and learn about all the things God does through Southern Baptist partnerships. You see, we really are stronger when we work together.

Disciplined to be a Disciple-Maker And Jesus

increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.

Luke 2:52 Although we view a person’s young adulthood as strategically important in life, we have only one verse about Jesus during that time of His life on earth. He had the most important mission in all of human history, so what was He doing from age 12 until the start of his public ministry? The Apostle Luke summarizes roughly 18 years of Jesus’ life in Luke 2:52.

Jesus was growing in “wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.” He was taking time (years) to build a disciplined life.

In our world, we expect instant results. What would it look like if Indiana Baptists invested time to raise up a generation of disciple makers? It might look like my friend Luke, who grew up in a Christian home and came to faith in Christ at an early age. As an active participant in his church

youth group, he attended summer camp at Highland Lakes Baptist Camp. That is where he connected with IU campus ministers. When Luke decided to attend IU Bloomington, he focused on growing in “wisdom and stature and favor with God and man.” From summer orientation until now, Luke has been growing like crazy. He is being discipled and disciplined to make disciples. This summer he continues disciple-making as a camp missionary, recognizing the discipline needed to make up

the loss of summer income and the stress on his schedule. Luke gets Luke 2:52. He understands that discipleship takes time and self-discipline in order to align with God and work with others.

What Is It and Who Should Attend?

When SCBI initiated Missions Lifeline last year, there was confusion about what it was and who would benefit by attending. In order to clarify, here are some Questions with Answers.

Q: What is Missions Lifeline?

A: A training event for men, women, boys and girls that brings international, national and local missionaries, along with experienced missions leaders, to one place on one day to equip God’s people for their part in the Great Commission. (Acts 1:8; Matthew 28:19-20) Q: Who is it for?

A: All pastors and any church members who are interested in gaining information, insight and resources to help the church engage in missions.

Q: Is it a WMU specific meeting?

A: No. This is a missions conference for everyone. There will be a special moment during the Missions Worship Celebration, when WMU will commission new state leaders. Children who attended Missions Adventure Camp will share about their week at camp, funded in part by scholarship gifts to the Margaret Gillaspie Endowment Fund.

Q: Is it worth my time and trouble?

A: Definitely! Since a wide variety of breakout sessions related to missions involvement are offered, there will be something of interest for everyone. Specific breakouts and leaders are on the website: www.scbi.org/missionslifeline.

Q: Can I bring kids?

A: Yes! Kids from pre-K to 6th grade will participate in a special Mission Mini Camp. They will travel to Russia (no passport required) to learn about God at work there. They will make crafts, play Russian games and taste food from Russia. They will have a chance to meet real missionaries and ask them questions.

Q: Is there anything special for pastors?

A: Yes! There are breakouts specifically for pastors – and pastors who come receive a gift!

April 19, 2017 Dear Indiana Baptist Foundation Board of Directors, This letter is to say thank you for the work that the Indiana Baptist Foundation and Jennifer Hall have done to assist my husband and me in taking a step with our will and with our resources.

Jeff and I have an average age of 60. Years ago, we did a Last Will and Testament, but needed to do a new one, as well as look at our options in giving to ministries. Jennifer met with us and listened well, then went to work. She found an affordable will for us. She sent us information on different trusts, and answered my questions about them. We settled on an Endowment trust, leaving the surviving spouse in control of our assets upon the death of the first spouse. At the death of the second spouse, our assets will be assigned to a trust that will pay out interest to the ministries we’ve designated. The Indiana Baptist Foundation will manage the trust when that time comes.

It may sound as if Jeff and I have a lot of resources, we do not. But with what God has given us, we intend to continue to serve the Gospel of Jesus Christ, hopefully until His return!

Around The State...

Prayer Summit with Dr. Claude King On Thursday, April 20, the East Central Baptist Association welcomed Dr. Claude King to lead a Prayer Summit, courtesy of the North American Mission Board. Dr. King arrived from Nigeria, where he was a guest speaker at a meeting of 12-15,000 people from 54 nations. God’s work in Africa has generated a need for materials to disciple believers. Dr. King taught Experiencing God and Fresh Encounters, which he co-authored.

For East Central’s Prayer Summit, Dr. King joined pastors and church leaders for a luncheon at Old Town Hill Baptist Church in Muncie. That evening he led a prayer meeting at Redeemer Baptist Church in Anderson.

Dr. King stressed the necessity of pray-ers, people who pray. The success of the church’s mission depends on people who are devoted to pray. “If we are not becoming a House of Prayer, we are becoming a den of thieves” (Mark 11:17). To be effective in prayer, one must be right with God and with one another (James 5:16). This requires a passionate love for God, fully surrendered to His will.

“The time went so quickly,” commented Brad Storm and his wife Lisa, who attended both sessions of the Prayer Summit. “I wish we could have had more time to listen to Dr. King.”

Discipleship Forum The churches of the Miami Baptist Association have enjoyed a partnership with the churches of the Sabine Neches Baptist Area (SNBA) in Southeast Texas for several years. The SNBA consists of 100 churches in three associations.

They have proven to be committed partners in the Gospel. Recently eight pastors from the SNBA traveled to the Kokomo area for a weekend of fellowship and training with leaders from around the Miami Baptist Area. On Saturday, April 1, a discipleship forum called Discipling Disciple-Makers was led by the team Texas and hosted by First Baptist Church of Greentown. It was a very challenging time of practical instruction and encouragement for everyone in attendance. The eight Texas pastors filled pulpits and led worship in Miami Baptist Association churches. We celebrate God’s work in and through this partnership!
