S easons of Change

all is officially here, and for me, this year that means so many things. My babies started school for the first time ever! It has been quite the adjustment, and I am getting used to having an empty house most days. My youngest is only home two days a week now, and although he misses his sister during the day, he is enjoying the one-on-one time and doing things together like making banana bread. Our baby boy is due at the end of September, and we are so excited to welcome him into the world and get into a new routine. Fall means cozy to me, and I am looking forward to cooler weather, snuggles, and lots of family time over the next several months. The Home issue looks a little different this year. It’s an expecting-mother takeover! We discover what being at home looks like for mamas and families. Ways to prepare, your trip to the hospital, what different birthing options there are, and lots of other fun topics. Although this is the pregnancy takeover, we understand that not everyone wants to have a family. We have fun stuff for you in this issue as well, including cocktails and mocktails, Pilates, and taking your home to the MAX. Like motherhood, minimalism isn’t for everyone. In our Welcome Home feature, we jump into maximalism and what that means. This issue was special to me as I come closer and closer every day to giving birth myself. After my first two were born, I remember trying to navigate what our new “normal” was going to be. This time, I am kidding myself if I think I have it all figured out! Every baby is different, every birth is different, and I imagine bringing this little one home will be a unique experience as always. They say it takes a village to raise babies, and I believe that to be true. So thank you to my village who loves and supports me and my little fam. At Scarlett we love bringing you the latest in women’s fashion, beauty, home decor, lifestyle, and health. Thank you all so much for the support as we near the end of our second year of Scarlett. You Grow, Girl

Our cover girl, Lacie Shepherd, felt right at home on the cover of our Home issue. The Home issue highlights the modern day homemaker. It’s not all about greeting your spouse with a cocktail in high heels and pearls. Now homemaking is a way for women of all kinds to take charge and feel empowered by the lost art of gardening, breadmaking, and sewing. In the second Home issue of Scarlett we talk about all things pregnancy from hospital bag to nesting as our Editor, Mary Aho, prepares to bring her newest baby into the world. At home is the perfect place to cozy up with a warm spiked cider and read this issue of Scarlett. photography by: Shanna Magnuson model: Lacie Shepherd 15

here is something liberating about taking the thing that once bound you and making it into something beautiful. Whether it is revisiting past places or attempting a task that was once unpleasant. For many women of past decades, their role as homemakers could feel like a chain tethering them to a house where they were underappreciated and undervalued. They were expected to run the house with their husband at work and children running around. Some wanted to be in the workforce or make a name for themselves outside the home but were trapped by societal expectations. It is no wonder that many women began turning away from homemaking in an effort to distance themselves from the thing that caged them. In recent years, homemaking skills have been on the rise again. It’s as if women are coming back to reclaim the thing used against them. Skills that would have been lost to the generations are being awakened by this deep need to create and prepare and take care of ourselves and the people we love. Homemaking skills no longer carry the negative connotation of the 1950s but are instead bringing power and pride into the hearts of women everywhere. Pastimes like baking, sewing, and gardening are becoming more of a staple in the lives of women eager to learn new skills and provide for themselves. With the rise of video-based apps like TikTok, things that used to be so foreign are becoming more easily accessible. People are less afraid to try new things because they are shown step-by-step processes. Breadmaking used to be such a foreign concept that many were afraid of trying, but in the past couple of years, people are really going for it. The art of breadmaking can be a very cathartic

21

8/24/22 9:11 AM

process because it allows you to get all your frustrations out in the kneading process and forces you to exercise patience through the rising and baking process. There is just something about that warm aroma of freshly baked bread filling your home. Knowing that you worked hard on something that now gets to fill your belly is incredibly satisfying. Another art form making a comeback is that of sewing your own clothes. Now that thrifted outfits are fashionable, many people are understanding the need for being able to tailor their own clothing. They are taking an article they love and changing it a bit here and there to better fit their bodies and their needs. It is an eco-friendly approach to shopping that leaves us with a clear conscience. Sewing your own clothes is an awesome way to be in charge of the things you put on your body and make sure you are representing yourself authentically. Gardening has always been a part of the lives of people interested in supplementing their diets with their own produce, but the process of preserving that food for the next season is not something as readily done. Canning and preserving is something we might have grown up helping our mothers or grandmothers do, but doing it ourselves is another story. There is something

23

19-24 HomeMaking.indd 5

8/24/22 9:11 AM

so grounding about pulling up your own vegetables from the dirt and then enjoying those vegetables months later. With videos and articles galore, attempting to preserve food is just another thing some women are doing to take back their independence. It is not about reverting back to the submissive housewife, but instead connecting with our foremothers and the ancestors who lived by these practices. The freedom that comes with being more self-sufficient is astounding even if you are afraid. Give something a go, you never know what you will fall in love with!

ot all heroes wear capes, some wear fabulous heels. Being a woman can be a difficult job. We are often expected to be everything to everyone. Work hard to reach your full potential in your career field, but also raise a family in-between. Make sure you meet all of your deadlines at work but also bake a casserole and join a book club. While it may seem overwhelming to “do it all,” there are a few local women who seem to have it figured out. And, for that, they are my heroes; or should I say heroines. Malala Fund said, “I want every girl to know that her voice can change the world.” This group of women are bravely climbing to the top and making a difference in the lives of those around them. In these articles, we are raising a glass to some amazing women along the Gulf Coast. As successful businesswomen and entrepreneurs, these women are the examples that we need for our youth. Some are mothers, some are bosses, some are adventurous, some lead quietly from the sidelines, but there is one thing they all have in common — they are heroines. The leaders, the path blazers, the extraordinary women that always go a step above the rest. A heroine is defined as a woman admired or idealized for her courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. These fearless women are that and more. 29

orn and raised in Pensacola, Florida, Camille L. Bonner has put lots of time and effort into creating a name for herself in the world of volunteer work. Some would call her a professional volunteer, and she is perfectly okay with that title! Camille spends much of her time as a substitute teacher for some of the best students in Northwest Florida. She spends her days working with students in kindergarten through fifth grade and helping them learn as much as they can while their teachers are away. Even on days when Camille is not officially working as a substitute, she can still be found in the school, volunteering in some way or another with the students. Camille’s journey as a professional volunteer started with the Escambia County School District. Wherever there was a job that needed to be done, Camille would volunteer. To this day, she will step up in whatever capacity is required in order to help make sure things are functioning as they need to function. She helps seminar speakers have the best experience possible, wraps gifts, fills backpacks, preps goodie bags, welcomes guests, and so much more! Through these efforts, she first became acquainted with Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Northwest Florida. She loves to help that organization and get to know the children on a personal level. Camille loves being involved in building the community and fostering that spirit of giving. The volunteer work with the school district is only amplified by Camille’s own role as a mother. She has three amazing boys who are her whole world. They are special, unique, and quirky, just like her! She never believed that she would be someone’s “mom,” but after seeing how much her boys have changed her life for the better and the blessings they bring to her life, being a mother is easily her greatest accomplishment. They support her when she needs help and are growing into individuals who will accomplish amazing things in their lives. Before she was so involved, Camille would observe the people in need around her and notice how they weren’t always receiving the help they required. It was through these observations that Camille knew she needed to get involved herself. Everyone needs help at some point, and if you are not receiving it life can be that much more

difficult. Camille wanted others to feel supported and loved so she just started helping where she saw a gap to be filled. If Camille could go back and tell her 20-year-old self something, it would be that life is going to hurt a lot more than you’d imagine, but it will get better. It did get better for Camille, and she learned to become more satisfied living as her true self and as her natural self. It is amazing how looking back at our lives can give us all kinds of perspective. Sometimes people will refer to Camille as a leader or an influencer. She isn’t quite sure how she feels about those titles, but she certainly doesn’t take it lightly. She hopes she can help people grow in their self-confidence so they feel comfortable walking into any room they need to. You may not physically have a million dollars, but Camille teaches her children and her school children that they can carry themselves like they do have a million dollars!

hile waiting in the immigration line at the Tokyo airport, Jade Guidotti noticed someone else holding similar paperwork. They struck up a conversation and found out they were attending the same study abroad program at Sophia University. However, the other student quickly rushed off, and Jade was a little disappointed. Just a few hours later, she was signing paperwork for her new dorm room and ran into that same student. As it turns out, Jade and the mysterious student, Ryder, were stuck together as flat-mates for the duration of the study abroad program. To their surprise, they hit it off and became fast friends. At the end of the program, they were madly in love and were faced with the prospect of having to make a long distance relationship work because Jade was in Florida and Ryder was in Louisiana. This sounds like a bestseller romance novel! The couple graduated from their respective universities, got married, and spent the next few years abroad. They were goat herders in France, camp counselors in Finland, landscape artists in New York, school teachers in Vermont, and catfish farmers in Hawaii. In 2020, they were forced to slow down on their travels and made their home in New Orleans to be close to Ryder’s hometown. They started working in a local bakery with Jade managing the front of the house and Ryder running the back of the house. From there things just kept snowballing, and they were able to launch their own baking company, Passion Flour. It is an innovative micro-bakery that creates visually

32-33_Heroine_Jade.indd 1

8/24/22 9:20 AM

striking pastries, cakes, and drinks with an emphasis on tropical, local, and organic ingredients. They carry a healthy selection of vegan and gluten-free options as well. Ryder might be the baker, but Jade is the cake decorator, accountant, delivery driver, social media manager, and expert taste tester. Together they work to create a unique experience for their customers. The name Passion Flour sometimes leads people to believe that it is an alternative gluten-free flour, however the name came from multiple meaningful sources. Some of these were their passion for baking, Ryder’s favorite flower, and necklace gifted to Jade by her father shortly before his passing. They love the name and the reputation they are growing throughout the community. Hotels, coffee shops, and cafés are reaching out to their company hoping to stock some of their goods. Between that and local farmers markets and street fairs, Passion Flour is a full-time job that keeps Jade on her toes! Running this business with her husband is Jade’s proudest accomplishment. It is not always easy to work professionally with a spouse, but together they learn and grow and support each other. They stress the importance of putting their love for each other first and eventually the business stuff will work itself out. Having a supportive mother-in-law who reminds Jade to put everything else behind the things she loves has been an invaluable resource. She has become Jade’s greatest female

influence through her constant support, encouragement, kindness, and example. Jade looks up to her strength and intelligence and her ability to run her own successful business. When she has the time and space, Jade loves to give back to the community through fostering stray kittens. She loves to see the transformation of a spicy stray who turns into a sweet cuddle-bug that craves attention. In the near future, Jade hopes to partner Passion Flour with some of the local animal shelters to provide bake sales and adoption drives. She is looking forward to seeing where her business takes them and the impact she can make.

Suzy Nicholson Hunt National Events Manager, BŌTE Destin, FL

written by: Emily Brink photography provided by: Suzy Nicholson Hunt

T

here are many pros and cons associated with having a parent in the military. Some of the harder aspects include moving from place to place and having a parent gone a lot of the time. Suzy Nicholson Hunt grew up as a “military brat” and moved with her family of six around the states and around the globe from the age of 6 months until she was 10 years old. Upon her father’s retirement from Hurlburt Field, they moved to Fort Walton Beach, Florida, which she considers her hometown. Today, she lives just next door in Destin, Florida. A more positive aspect of growing up in a military family is the lasting effect it leaves on you. Suzy was able to make new friends all over, accept her surroundings, and honor the sacrifices made by military families to protect the country’s freedoms. She will forever hold those families with the utmost respect seeing how she knows firsthand all they have to go through. Her parents raised her to love America, respect her elders, and give to those less fortunate. She learned to work hard and to always be kind to others. The family unit was incredibly important during the era she grew up in, and Suzy still holds her family very near and dear to her heart. Throughout her professional career, Suzy has worked with many local companies including radio stations, the Destin Chamber of Commerce, and now BOTE where she works as the National Events Manager. BOTE is a paddleboard company that puts a big emphasis on durable boards. They wanted something you could put a cooler on and fish from while still being able to paddle around effectively. Suzy loves her job and the platform it provides her. She is able to give back to the community by raising awareness for

34-35_Heroine_Suzy.indd 1

8/24/22 9:26 AM

many causes and organizations. She strives to improve the social well-being of people and animals in the community and does her part to help improve things. For the past 15 years, Suzy has been living as a breast cancer survivor. Through her experience, she learned to treat every single day like a gift and to appreciate the mundane. In 2007, the Suzy Fund was created with Sacred Heart Hospital of the Emerald Coast. They created it to offer free mammograms and diagnostic screenings for underserved women in Okaloosa and Walton counties. It is such an amazing blessing to those able to receive services through this foundation. Having a supportive and loving husband, a cozy home, fur babies she loves, and a career she is passionate about is Suzy’s proudest accomplishment. She has been blessed with amazing family members who have been very influential in her life. Her number one female influence is her mother, Josie, but she must also mention her two sisters, Debbie and Sandy. Suzy is their little sister and has learned so much from them while growing up. Sisters are your first and forever best friends. An engaged community can have an extremely significant impact on its members. Suzy knows that cultivating that spirit of engagement can help change lives,

• Biggest Sports Fan: I am an avid or rabid Cleveland Browns fan. I go to a home game every year and sit in the beloved Dawg Pound. I live for football season! and she tries to be kind and give where she can to help her neighbors. If she could tell her 20-year-old self anything, she would say: “Girl, keep on having fun!” She would tell her to enjoy college and travel. Making memories is the best use of your time because, in the end, those are the things sure to follow you.

ometimes the best way to offer help is through small and simple means. That is how Tonya Kilpatrick goes throughout her life. Tonya’s favorite way to help those around her is through small, but love-filled ways. She is always walking around with her head up and her ears and eyes open, looking for people in need. Tonya works heavily with her church, A Simple Faith Church, where she serves the people of the beautiful Florida Panhandle. She believes that these small acts of love are the fibers that hold the community together and plans to continue providing that help throughout her lifetime.

www.ScarlettMag.com

36-37_Heroine_Tonya.indd 1

8/24/22 9:28 AM

After spending many years in her hometown of Albany, Georgia, Tonya and her family made the move to Santa Rosa Beach, Florida. There she works as a designer and decorator and enjoys her role in the community. She has become the woman she is today through constant support from her community, family, and relying on her faith. Keeping her eyes on God has carried her through all of life’s valleys and mountains and shaped her into a stronger woman. She chooses to wake up every day with a heart full of gratitude, to move her body, to show up for her family, to serve others, and to trust God with it all. It was being on the receiving end of love and support from others that really inspired Tonya to get involved. It changed her heart and helped her understand how important it is to show up for others and serve their needs, especially when those people are complete strangers. Family is very important to Tonya. She has been married for 38 years and is the proud mother to three children and the happy grandmother to six beautiful grandchildren. Family isn’t always blood, and Tonya’s greatest female influence is the woman who stepped into a motherly role after Tonya’s mother passed away when she was only 26. Molly Swan has been a steadfast force in Tonya’s life, and her unwavering love for Tonya and her family has heavily influenced the woman Tonya has become. Molly has quite a large family of her own, but somehow she continues to show up for Tonya’s family. It truly inspired Tonya to become that woman in the lives of others. Hindsight is 2020, and if Tonya could go back, she would tell her 20-year-old self to say “yes!” to more adventures and to remember that other people’s opinions of her are not her business. Looking into the future, Tonya plans to keep searching out those little ways to be of service. If she sees or learns of a need that she knows she has the time, skills, or resources to help, she will. Actions speak louder than words, and people are much more likely to learn from how we live our lives than what we say to them. Tonya’s adult children are the people who have been guided by Tonya the most and she knows that they will look back and understand that she really trusted in God. She prays that her legacy is one of love and they will know she respected all people, worked hard, and savored the little things in life.

t is hard to sum up a life in just a few words, but if Gilda Jackson could define what made her the woman she is today, she would attribute faith, hard work, and community service. Being involved in the community can really help shape us as individuals and create an environment that is beneficial to everyone. It is really inspiring to watch people give service to others and expect nothing in return. It was moments like this that inspired Gilda to get more involved with the community. She continued to meet person after person who offered service and compassion for others, and Gilda knew she wanted to emulate some of those characteristics into her own life. Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Gilda moved to Destin in 2008 and has been loving it ever since. She is currently a retired Lockheed Martin executive. Throughout her 15-year employment with Lockheed Martin, Gilda held leadership positions in system engineering, program management, and manufacturing. She also served as the President and General Manager of Lockheed Martin AeroParts Inc. from July 2015 until August 2018.

In 1997, Gilda became the first female African American Colonel in the United States Marine Corps. She commanded the Naval Aviation Depot at Cherry Point, North Carolina, where several thousand military and civilian personnel were included in her organization. Some of her duties included Commander, Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 13, Director of Maintenance and Logistics Requirements, and Joint Advanced Strike Fighter Program. Gilda frequently collaborated with United States and international businesses and military establishments. Gilda retired from the United States Marine Corps after 30 years of service in 2001. These days Gilda is serving on the Board of Trustees for the Ohio Dominican University. She is also keeping busy volunteering with various organizations across Walton County, like the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation (MKAF). This foundation is committed to cultivating and nurturing a deep appreciation for the arts in Florida and has been fostering this spirit since their opening in 1995. Gilda hopes to continue finding organizations that resonant with her and to lend her skills wherever they are needed. Gilda is excellent at management positions and hopes to lend that talent to other service-oriented organizations. She has had the privilege of mentoring many young people and has enjoyed watching them excel in positions of leadership and management. She is proud of their ability to be informed, focused, and valued members of their companies, organizations, and communities. College was a very influential part of Gilda’s life. She will never forget the look on her mother’s face the day she graduated. Her mother was only 4 foot, 11 inches, but that day, Gilda says she stood 6 feet tall! When it comes to giving advice to her past self, Gilda would tell herself to trust her instincts and to follow her passion for serving others. Representation matters. Gilda is inspired by Barbara Jordan, the first African American elected to the Texas Senate and the first Southern African American woman elected to the United States House of Representatives. Barbara went on to deliver eloquent speeches to government officials and really make a name for herself in the history books. Gilda is thankful for all of her experience in life that has led her to this point. She hopes to make a positive and lasting impact with her work and to continue providing assistance when and where possible. • The Beach or The Pool: I prefer the pool over the beach but enjoy the calming of beach horizon views. • Currently Reading: Things We Do in the Dark by Jennifer Hillier • Favorite Dish to Cook: Grilled salmon with lemon butter pasta 39

A.2 Few Good Men.4

en — can’t live with them, can’t live without them. But luckily we’ve found a few good men! Leaders, mentors, partners, gentlemen. There are approximately 161.6 million men in the United States. That’s a big number, but all we need is a few good men to make a difference. We are lucky that the Gulf Coast has as many good men as they do palm trees. Our area is booming with strong male role models helping to lead the way and to guide the younger generations down the right path. These men are out there in our community making a real difference. They are running businesses, they are volunteering, they are working at the local nonprofits, they are fathers, and they are husbands. These men are juggling all of these jobs and are doing it with style and grace. Being a good man is more than just following the rules, it’s being the individual who goes above and beyond. It’s being the man who isn’t afraid to stand up for what is right. A truly good man is one whose traits perfectly balance out. He is both strong and sensitive, a leader but can also take direction. A good man is someone you can look up to.

ometimes the secrets to success are best passed through your close friends. When Codi Jones was still in the very beginning stages of starting a business, he had a really good friend who took the time to show him what it was actually like to start your own business. The time and effort spent by his friend has stuck with Codi for years now, and he has been able to create successful businesses from that advice. He is forever grateful for his friend, and has spent his own time and resources to pass that valuable information on to others. It is his goal to help as many people as he can begin on their own path to being a business owner. Codi grew up in Bellbrook, Ohio, but currently lives and works in Panama City Beach, Florida. He owns Endless Marketing, which is a company based on helping others start their own business in the community. He loves to see their ideas and dreams turn into a reality and having a small part in that success brings him a lot of satisfaction. It is all about helping others succeed when they did not even know how to begin. Marketing is not Codi’s only business. He is also a co-owner of All Inclusive Adventures, a Panama City Beach water adventure company. They are known for their clear-bottomed equipment that allows the user to view marine life from atop the water. Their stand-up paddleboards provide a serene experience during the day that allows you to maneuver in the water while seeing through the paddleboard. If you are up for a nighttime adventure, consider heading out on one of their clear-bottomed kayaks. They are adorned with LED lights that illuminate the water so you can see marine life clearly after sundown. You will be able to search for stingrays, crabs, fish, and other ocean life that may be attracted to the lights. All Inclusive Adventures is proud to have donated adventure packages to multiple organizations and community endeavors. They are excited to continue offering these packages and gifts to the community and various organizations in need. Launching his adventure business was Codi’s proudest moment. Watching people get out on the water each night, overcome their fears, and experience new things has made it all worthwhile. The influence of a mother is pervasive into many aspects of our lives. Codi is lucky to have a mother that taught him so many things over the years and constantly led by her own example. She is an amazing woman who has overcome so much, and she is easily his greatest female

influence. If Codi could look back and give his 20-yearold self some advice, he would tell him not to worry what other people think. It is way more important to focus on what makes you happy and do that instead. Codi spent a long time trying to be someone he did not resonate with and can see now how much that affected him. As a leader, Codi knows that a rising tide lifts all ships. He tries to be that tide and to elevate those around him. He understands that the successes he has experienced have been greatly influenced by his amazing team. He can’t take credit for it all, they did it together, and he is so proud to be a part of such an influential group.

anny Akers truly believes in helping others be successful. Nothing makes him prouder than when he sees a friend, client, or employee achieve their goals and dreams. He feels lucky that through his job he is able to facilitate these kinds of moments on a regular basis. Throughout his professional career, Danny has worn quite the assortment of hats. He first started working in luxury women’s retail. His position in management and sales led him to making stops all over the country as he worked with brands and businesses. He then moved into the hospitality business. Danny was the general manager of Café Amelie, a very popular and successful restaurant in the French Quarter of New Orleans. While Danny loved these career paths, he wanted something a little different. Several years after switching to the hospitality business, Danny went into the real estate business in 2019. During his first year at Reve Realtors, Danny was awarded both “Rookie of the Year” as well as “Top Producer’’ in his firm. He is licensed in Louisiana and Mississippi and specializes in the New Orleans and Mississippi Gulf Coast markets. Danny tries to always go above and beyond to make sure his clients find their dream homes. It is such a big purchase so he wants to make the process as stress free as possible. He is extremely proud of his career accomplishments and the fact that he continues to try new things. Danny grew up in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, but now spends his time between homes in New Orleans and Pass Christian, Mississippi. Danny shares his life with his partner of 17 years, Jerry Mixon, and their three dogs. They are passionate about spending time outside and near the water. Danny also has an appreciation for fitness and tries his best to stay in shape. Growing up, Danny watched his young mother, Barbara Lawrence, juggle the challenges of work, raising her children, and caring for her brother who had muscular dystrophy. She easily became Danny’s greatest female influence and instilled important values into her children. She taught them faith, acceptance, forgiveness of yourself and others, setting goals, and giving back to the community as a regular participant and volunteer. She set an amazing example. Whenever Danny has the opportunity to talk to young people, he makes sure to stress the importance of forgiveness in yourself and others.

For the past several years, Danny has been an avid supporter of Project Lazarus in New Orleans. This organization provides transitional housing and social services for individuals living with HIV. Project Lazarus is an independent and non-denominational nonprofit organization, but it is sponsored by the Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans. It is one of the oldest and the largest organizations of its kind in the United States, and they have truly done wonders for the individuals they serve. Currently, Danny is serving on the Board of Directors for Project Lazurus as the Vice Chairman. It is a very rewarding position as he gets to see the residents helped by the project grow and mature through their challenges such as previous incarceration, substance abuse, and medical care management. He is very grateful for his position and the work he is able to bring about through this organization.

Alex Winkler

Lieutenant, Niceville Fire Department Niceville, FL

written by: Emily Brink photography by: Jessica Winkler Photography

F

or the past seven years, Alex Winkler has made the city of Freeport, Florida, his home. He was born in Georgia and grew up in Destin, Florida, but he and his family are loving the life they are creating together just north of his hometown. Professionally, Alex spends most of his time in Niceville, Florida, where he works as a Lieutenant for the Niceville Fire Department. He and his team serve the community in a number of ways. Not only do they assist in emergency situations by putting out fires and in the medical field, but they also help with a lot of educational programs. They teach classes on public safety and fire prevention to members of the community in an effort to help mitigate emergency situations. Choosing to become a firefighter was really a no-brainer for Alex. Throughout his entire life, even from a young age, he has found great satisfaction in helping those in need. When it came time to choose a career path becoming a firefighter fit perfectly with his personal values and goals in life. Alex is truly grateful to have the ability, and the opportunity, to turn his passion for service into something that can support his family and keep him invested throughout his career. Without a doubt, Alex’s greatest female influence is his wife. She is not only an amazing mother, but she has built her own business from the ground up. Her compassion and resilience has continually impressed Alex. Her efforts in building her business have been truly impressive, and she is the hardest worker Alex knows. He is also greatly impressed by the two female firefighters who work with his team every day. They are great influences on the community and are providing young girls with representation in a field otherwise dominated by men. Alex is very proud of his career and his ability to help people in the community on their worst days. However, his greatest accomplishment is his 8-month-old son. Alex could not imagine his life without him and being his father is such a rewarding process. Being a father gives Alex a lot of moments to reflect on his own life. If he could give his 20-year-old self a bit of advice he would say to never hesitate. You might as well go for your goals and dreams because the sooner you start, the sooner you can achieve them! As a Lieutenant in the department, Alex’s job is to lead and guide his team to the best of his ability. He has an awesome unit who will follow him in all of his efforts to

help the community, which he would say is leading them in the right direction. The Niceville Fire Department is very involved in the community and will go out of their way to help in whatever capacity available. Some of their community outreach involves speaking at schools to teach the importance of fire safety and prevention, working with the Girl and Boy Scouts to receive badges, and working at health fairs to spread knowledge further into the community. Over the next five years, Alex plans to continue leading his team in more outreach programs and integrating his department with other agencies to further their abilities and resources.

here’s nothing quite as transformative for a woman as giving birth. Bringing new life into the world is truly life changing and a moment you will never forget. The moment your perfect little one is on your chest, looking up at you in awe as they adjust to their new world will leave a permanent imprint on your heart. It’s also an experience that you can’t predict a lot of and can be as overwhelming as it is magical; especially for a first-time mom. With so much out of your control throughout the whole pregnancy and birthing journey, you might find yourself obsessing over minor details and feeling anxious over things that never bothered you before. That is why it is helpful to be as educated and prepared as possible for your new bundle of joy. For centuries, women have been nesting in preparation for the arrival of a new baby. Whether cleaning out your cave or shopping at Pottery Barn Kids, nesting is a primal instinct and can play a very important role in your baby journey. Nesting

48-49_Nesting.indd 1

usually begins for women later in the third trimester and amps up as the adrenaline increases with the impending due date. Nesting is something that your partner can get involved in as well and can be a very strengthening and cathartic process to bring you closer. The natural urge of nesting helps women to prepare mentally and practically for birth. Animals in the wild do it, and it can be just as powerful in humans as nature helps you get ready to nurture a child. Prepping the nursery and packing your hospital bags are more of the obvious nesting instincts, while others can manifest through hyper organization of your spice drawer. When emotions and hormones are running at an all-time high, the burst of energy and extreme focus that comes along with nesting can make you all of a sudden have the overwhelming urge to color code all of your lipsticks and dust the ceiling fans. Here is a useful nesting checklist to help guide you on your organizational journey toward baby time.

8/24/22 9:34 AM

1. Crib and Bedding: Whether you choose to go boho or traditional, the crib is a focal point of your nursery and where your little one will spend a lot of their time in those first few years. Choosing a pattern or theme for your crib bedding can help set the tone for the entire nursery. 2. Glider or Rocker: This is a sacred spot for new mommas. It’s where you spend countless quiet hours feeding your baby, reading to your baby, and maybe catching a few much-needed naps in between. The key to choosing the right style for you is to marry the needs of comfort and aesthetics. You want it to look good and feel good. 3. Organizing Baskets & Labels: Baskets and bins quickly become your best friends when you have little ones. From

organizing toys, to diapers, to teeny socks, these work horses can do it all. These organizational helpers come in fabric, wood, wicker, and more and make shelves look neat and tidy as well as being super functional in closets. You can create custom labels online, use a label maker, or hand write cute signs to help you and your family members find things easily through the newborn fog.

4. Baby Clothes: It’s no secret that shopping can be like a form of therapy, and what’s better than buying clothes? If you

know the gender of your baby you can go wild on pink or tiny suspenders. If you’re waiting for the big day to find out, lots of retailers carry beautiful gender-neutral clothing.

5. Nursery Ambience: Creating a calm and soothing atmosphere for your nursery is key. Some useful things to

incorporate can be a sound machine, blackout curtains, an essential oil diffuser, or salt rock lamp. With these items you might trick yourself into thinking you’re at a spa instead of doing your 14th diaper change of the day.

6. Mama Birth Essentials: Prepping a basket with special items just for you is an important part of your nesting process. Cozy socks, a pretty robe, a large water bottle with straw, and comfortable undergarments are just a few of the things you can add to your stockpile. 7. Books & Special Toys: A popular trend for baby showers is to give the mother-to-be a book in lieu of a card. She can

then stock her little one’s shelves with special books signed by loved ones and think back on that special day each time she reads them. Along with books, a few specially curated toys put on display can add a lot of character to a nursery. Heirloom toys from your childhood or hand-crafted wooden toys make beautiful options.

8. Diaper Changing Station: With the amount of diapers you’ll be changing in those hazy newborn days, you want to

make it as quick and functional as possible. Some key features you’ll want in your station are a comfy changing pad, baby wipes, diapers, diaper rash cream, and the Holy Grail item you never knew you needed, a bum brush. What is that you may ask? A small silicone paddle wand used to swipe the diaper rash cream onto the baby's bum which effectively keeps your hands clean and your baby rash free! Win, win.

9. Bassinet: Many new parents choose to keep their baby in their bedroom for the first few months for convenience and peace of mind. Whether you choose to bed-share or use a bassinet there are endless options to choose from. You can go for the Cadillac of bassinets and get the automated Snoo, or go old school with a moses basket. Both will keep your sweet angel within arm’s reach.

10. Décor: With Instagram and Pinterest flooding your phone with nursery inspiration 24/7 it can be overwhelming. It can be helpful to start with a color palette and go from there. While you can always go with the Mickey Mouse matching sheet set and wallpaper, sometimes less can be more. By creating a simple and soothing backdrop, you can add personal touches as your little one grows and develops a personality.

11. Nursing & Feeding: However you choose to feed your baby you will need certain supplies to prep for your feeding

journey. There are pumps to choose from, a million bottles to sort through, nursing bras, and more. A key item that is a multitasker is a nursing pillow. These saviors aren’t only useful for supporting a nursing Mama, they can help a partner or family member better position a baby for bottle feeding or even just some couch snuggling.

12. Hospital Bag: A well-prepared hospital bag sitting in the trunk of your car can definitely help you sleep better at night. It’s good to have this ready to go around 36 weeks because you never know if your little one will make their grand entrance earlier than expected. Make sure to include the essential items for mom, dad, and baby.

hile we may have months of pool parties and beach days ahead of us here in Florida, once the Fourth of July has come and gone, visions of cozy evenings sipping warm cocktails begin to fill our dreams. When it’s time to trade in your cut-off shorts for leggings and oversized sweaters, you know that the season for heart-warming, spiked cocktails and ciders has arrived. As the seasons turn, so does the time for trading in mojitos for pumpkin spice and apple cinnamon everything. Nothing makes your house feel like a home quite like the scent of mulling spices engulfing your senses and setting the mood for fall. There are many warm beverages and ciders that are alcoholfree and great options for your autumn family functions. Many of them can be made in large batches in a slow cooker, which is perfect to go along with a potluck dinner or to step up a game night among friends. There are many boozy versions of hot chocolate that can transform your childhood favorite treat into a decadent adult beverage. The best thing about all of these fall drinks is that they can be made with or without alcohol and you can add whatever liquor strikes your fancy. There are some flavors that scream “fall,” like pumpkin and apple. The spices usually paired with fall cocktails are cinnamon, sugar, and vanilla. This season, consider shaking things up by adding herbs like mint, rosemary, or sage and flavors like citrus and ginger for unexpected savory accents. Cozy up with a good book and your favorite fluffy blanket because it’s warm cocktail season.

Pumpkin Apple Cider with Cinnamon Sugar Whipped Cream ¼ cup pumpkin puree 1 ½ cups fresh apple cider ⅛ tsp cinnamon A pinch of allspice, cloves, ginger, and nutmeg ¼ cup heavy cream 1 tbsp cinnamon sugar (½ tbsp sugar and ½ tbsp cinnamon) 1 oz vodka, rum, or bourbon

In a saucepan, heat the pumpkin, apple cider, and cinnamon together. Add any additional spices you would like. Stir frequently until warm. Beat the heavy cream until whipped cream forms and add half of your cinnamon sugar mixture. Pour the drink into a mason jar or festive mug and add the liquor of your choosing if you want it boozy. Dollop the cinnamon sugar whipped cream on top. Sprinkle with your leftover portion of cinnamon sugar and garnish with an apple slice. Enjoy! There will be some natural separation in the drink if you leave it sitting, so just give it a stir if it is separating.

Autumn Harvest Punch Mocktail 3 cups lemonade 5 cups apple cider 1 cup orange juice 5 cups sparkling water ¼ cup maple syrup Rosemary sprigs 3 apples 1 orange

In a tall pitcher, mix the apple cider with the orange juice and lemonade. Set aside. Cut the apples and the oranges and add them to the pitcher. Mix in the maple syrup and add the rosemary sprigs. Cover and put in the refrigerator for 2 hours or until chilled. Add the sparkling water and mix. You can make it overnight and serve the next day. You can add 2 cinnamon sticks to make it spicier.

t’s 2022, and everyone knows the importance of exercise and how incorporating fitness into your everyday routine can be life-changing. There are limitless options for workouts from virtual classes taken at home, to big corporate gyms and boutique fitness studios. There is always something new coming out that makes it hard to stay on top of all the options and best fit for you. But rest assured, the “perfect” workout for you is out there. Of course, you can try all the group class trends that come and go from Orange Theory and Pure Barre to Soul Cycle and CrossFit. And, those can certainly work wonders, however, there’s a reason that certain types of fitness like yoga and Pilates have remained solid over the decades. Pilates was created by the physical trainer Joseph Pilates in the 1920s. While the core techniques have remained the same, the application of Pilates has drastically changed over the years. Some of the first people to attend Pilates classes were soldiers returning from war and dancers working toward strengthening their bodies and healing their aches and pains. Now there are celebrity Pilates instructors and high-gloss, fancy studios in every pocket of the country bringing in flocks of dedicated clients daily. The Lululemon-clad followers come bouncing into each Pilates class with their high ponytails and tight leggings ready to lengthen, strengthen, and tighten their muscles. While this is the image that may come to mind when thinking about modern Pilates, this tried-and–true method is wildly popular and effective for both men and women of any age. This incredible method is focused on improving flexibility, strength, and body awareness without building bulk. In a traditional Pilates studio, clients work through a series of

www.ScarlettMag.com

8/24/22 9:38 AM

controlled movements on springresistant exercise apparatuses (the Reformer, the Cadillac, the Spine Corrector, the Ladder Barrel, and the Wunda Chair). You can also do Pilates on the floor without equipment, which is known as mat work. Throughout a session, a trainer will focus all movements around the key elements of Pilates: core muscle strength and spinal alignment. Unlike a high intensity or weight-centered workout that may be extremely intimidating to some, Pilates can be started at any point in life and is welcoming and accommodating to any fitness level. Another perk of Pilates is that if you don’t have the time or resources to go to a studio

to practice the method, you can do it from the comfort of your own home without the fancy equipment. Maybe you work from home, maybe you just had a baby, or maybe you’re recovering from an injury or are elderly. Pilates may be the perfect low-impact, yet powerful, workout that you’ve been searching for. You can find videos on YouTube or purchase Pilates DVDs or online trainer-led workouts to guide you through the resistance-based movements that will sculpt and tone your muscles. Slider discs can help mimic a reformer class at home, and a set of small handheld weights help improve resistance during your practice. While you can certainly do

Pilates at home with zero equipment, setting up your space with good lighting, a pretty yoga mat, and a few small tools can be the motivating push you need to jumpstart your body on the path to strength and wellness.

What Makes the Difference between a house and a home? with Special Guest Writer

Jessica Duncan

T

here is a significant difference between a house and a home. While many people use these words interchangeably, they are very different. A house is a physical space where you reside, while a home is an emotional feeling of belonging and comfort. The difference between a house and a home is the pictures on the wall and the items you have inside the structure. A house may have artwork or photographs with no emotional ties behind their presence. This would be how we would stage a model house or vacant house to sell. Whereas in a home, the pictures on the wall evoke emotions of comfort, belonging, and love. The photos on the wall in a home are of family and loved ones. They carry meaning that warms the heart. It can also create a feeling of achievement or accomplishment, such as with a picture from college graduation. One of the most heartwarming parts of being a real estate agent for me is helping individuals, couples, and families find a house they will turn into a home. When a client texts me and tells me how much they are enjoying their home, or I see pictures on Facebook of them enjoying their home, it brings joy to my heart. I can see the memories they are making through their photographs. This is the difference between selling someone a house and finding them a home. Sure, everyone wants a house that’s got style with the latest trending décor, but don’t forget to fill your home with items of meaning. The items on the shelves or mantel you picked up at an event, festival, or when traveling should remind you of your feelings when purchasing them. To others, a sculpture on the mantel may just be a sculpture that looks nice, but to you it’s

www.ScarlettMag.com

59-62_TourofHomesPcola_SeptOct22.indd 2

8/24/22 9:39 AM

a reminder of walking through the art festival holding your partner’s hand. To your partner, it may be a reminder of the excitement they saw in your eyes when you discovered the sculpture. A vacation picture on the wall may mean you went someplace pretty to visitors. To you, it is a reminder of a magical time with your partner, or of a time when your entire family enjoyed a vacation full of laughter and smiles experiencing new adventures.

Ultimately, the difference between a house and a home is your feelings about the place. It comes from inside you. It does not matter its size, cost, or the high-end features it may boast. It’s the place you want to be in to rest, rejuvenate, and relax. A home is a place that belongs to your heart.

ast-iron cooking is one of the most slept-on kitchen secrets. Maybe that is because maintaining a cast-iron pan takes extra effort or simply because it isn't as well known. Either way, it is about time the art of cast-iron cooking became more mainstream so everyone can start enjoying them. These pans last forever, which makes them a great investment piece. Over time, cast-iron pans build up a layer of seasoning that enhances every dish you make in that pan. They are built from a very dense metal that is difficult to dent but holds heat exceptionally well. Once that pan is heated, it will radiate that heat through your entire dish. Cast-iron pans are great for searing meat and creating a crisp crust on bread. If seasoned properly, they can create a nonstick surface great for pancakes, omelets, and other foods prone to sticking. When it comes to seasoning your cast-iron skillet, it is relatively straightforward. After obtaining a new pan, use sandpaper to get the rough bumps off. You're not looking for a mirror finish but just a smoother finish than what it comes with.

Next, you are going to want to use a high-temperature oil that will avoid smoking. Vegetable oil will work in a pinch, but grapeseed and flaxseed are the best. Using a paper towel, coat the entire pan — inside and outside — in a thin layer of oil. Remove any excess and place it upside down in your oven at 500 degrees. After about 20 minutes, turn the oven off and let both oven and pan cool. To keep the seasoning going strong, avoid cooking foods high in acid like tomatoes and vinegar as these will strip the seasoning right off. A little bit of dish soap with gentle brushing is okay, but never put it in the dishwasher. Repeat the seasoning process whenever you notice it starting to come off.

Stir in the flour, salt, and the pepper until combined, continue to cook for a minute or so, continuing to stir so it doesn’t stick. 4. Gradually add the milk, pouring with one hand and stirring with the other. Allow the gravy mixture to come to a boil, stirring constantly. Turn down to a simmer and allow to cook another 3 to 4 minutes or until thickened then turn off while making the biscuits. 5. In a medium bowl, mix together the Bisquick and the milk until a soft dough forms. Drop by spoonfuls onto the top of the gravy. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes or until golden brown. 6. Melt the remaining tablespoon of butter in the microwave. Brush the tops of the biscuits with the melted butter. Serve immediately.

1 ½ – 2-inch steak of choice – ribeye, New York strip, T-bone, etc. Kosher salt & ground black pepper, to season 1 – 2 tbsp avocado oil (or other high smoke point oil of choice) 2 tbsp unsalted butter, diced into small cubes 2 cloves garlic, smashed 2 sprigs fresh rosemary 8 – 10 sprigs fresh thyme

1. Set your steak out 30 minutes before cooking. Pat dry and season with salt and pepper. 2. With your stove on high heat, preheat your skillet for 5-7 minutes. 3. Carefully add the oil to the skillet. Once the oil begins to smoke, place the steak in the skillet. Cook for 30 seconds. Flip and continue flipping the steak every 30 seconds for 5 minutes for medium rare doneness. 4. After the last flip, reduce the heat to low. Add the butter, garlic, rosemary, and thyme to the skillet. Tilt the skillet toward you so the butter pools alongside the edge of the skillet nearest you. Use a large spoon to baste the butter over top of the steak repeatedly for 30 seconds. 5. Transfer the steak to a plate and let rest for 10-15 minutes. 6. Top with browned butter from the skillet and flakey salt. Serve immediately. 65

hose are words that artist and singer Chase Kamata lives by, words that inspire her brush and guide her hand over the canvas as she paints. “My friends like to give me a hard time about this sentiment,” she says. “They’ll say to me, ‘No, Chase! This wrinkle on my brow is not pretty and needs to go away,’ or ‘Not this scar, this stretch mark.’ But I see every ‘blemish’ as a part of the story that our faces and our bodies tell — like etchings describing the history of who we are and what we’ve experienced. Perhaps the crease around a person’s lips is significant of how many times they’ve smiled in their life. Or the scar on their knee signifying of an injury that they sustained but have overcome. When observing the faces of people, I think, ‘What truths have their eyes seen? What different perspectives in life?’ The human face is the greatest novel that there is, in my opinion, and each face holds a unique and incomparable story, an adventure. How amazing is that?” How amazing, indeed? And that amazement, that awe of life, and the stories told in faces is evident in every piece that bears Chase Kamata’s name, every painting created with her signature use of bold color and distinctive style. Like a jazz musician, she makes beauty from riotous chaos, harmonizing light and shadow, pigment and colors to achieve something that is captivating and spellbinding. photo by: Laura Flannery Photography

The granddaughter of musician and civil rights activist Edgar “Dooky” Chase Jr. and Chef Leah Chase, Chase’s family history is a rich one — continuing with her mother, jazz singer Leah Chase. “My grandparents owned Dooky Chase’s, so I never starved, and with my mother, I was never deprived of music,” she says. “Though most of my life was spent being raised in a single parent household, I feel like I was raised by a village of family members. My grandmother was the glue of our family, and in being so, she created a truly tight-knit community of aunts, uncles, and cousins — all of whom, in their own lives, have been loving, giving, and successful in their endeavors. No matter what stage I’ve encountered in life through the ups and downs, I have always had a constant pool of love and inspiration to draw from. My grandmother, in particular, was a huge supporter of my art. Dooky Chase’s Restaurant was the first business to welcome my art to its walls.” A famous landmark in the New Orleans neighborhood of Treme, Dooky Chase’s is the epitome of Creole cuisine, with the atmosphere to match. It is fitting that it served as an early gallery for Chase’s paintings, so imbued with the spirit and pride of New Orleans are they. “My motivation is quite simply, New Orleans,” says Chase, who learned to draw and paint before she could write the alphabet. “I adore the culture, the music, and the people. The city of New Orleans naturally offers an array of vibrant colors. It’s hard for me to shift my focus to anything else.” Primarily working in acrylic and oil, Chase also creates mixed media pieces using recycled fabric and materials. Largely self-taught, she took her first art class as a child during a summer course with the talented New Orleans artist Richard C. Thomas. “Now that I think about it, he gave me the foundation for depicting the human anatomy of the face and body,” she notes. “Prior to that, my face accuracy and body proportions were closer to that of Picasso, but unintentionally so.”

In high school, she had superb training and support at Mount Carmel Academy and also attended a summer arts intensive in Colorado that opened her eyes to different painting techniques and styles. Later accepted at an art university, Chase had to make a choice between music and art for college. “I chose to pursue a collegiate education in music and theater — my other passions,” she explains. She attended Loyola University and Tulane University for her music degrees but continued painting on the side. Coming from the family that she does, Chase’s proclivity — and talent — for music seems only natural, leading to a successful career that has taken her far. “For the past ten years, I’ve lived in New York, hitting the pavement, working and traveling, though COVID brought me home to New Orleans for the time being,” she says. “My passion as a singer primarily extends into musical theater. I’ve worked with various theaters locally, throughout the country, internationally, and at sea. My singing career has taken me to places beyond my imagination including Europe, Japan, Australia, and South Korea. I recently returned from a UK tour with an amazing ballroom dancing company called Burn the Floor. It is always a good time and a fun show because I literally get to sing everything from Zeppelin to Bizet and work with world-renowned talent.” Naturally, there is an overlap with singing and painting — but there are also differences. Chase draws from both. “They both provide a unique and creative view on life,” she says. “Whereas painting is the visual interpretation of life, singing is the audible interpretation of life. I need the balance of both. I’ve had an internal conflict with choosing one or the other, but I can’t, and I don’t intend to. Visual art requires a lot of self-isolation with just myself and the canvas. I do enjoy it, but the isolation also makes me crave a social outlet of expression — and that’s when singing comes into play. There is something so magical and ethereal about creating music with other artists. The art of telling a story through song, creating rich harmonies, the energy, and the excitement are so fulfilling and

rejuvenating for the soul. For me, singing is also a form of therapy, albeit a public one. If I’m having a rough day, I let it go through song. Singing allows for me to find the beauty in the darkness, and painting to find the beauty in the light.”

rom chargrilled to casino, raw to Rockefeller, and every other preparation imaginable, oysters have long been a popular treasure from the sea. They are a delicacy enjoyed both with reverence and with reverie — and nowhere will they be more celebrated in all their various forms than at HarborWalk Village’s second annual signature fall event, Half Shells on the Harbor. Both delicious and healthy (depending on how much butter, cheese, or bacon is involved), oysters are also sustainable and therefore environmentally friendly. Plus, they’re considered an aphrodisiac. What’s not to love? Held Nov. 12, 2022, from 1-4 p.m., the festival kicks off with an exclusive

Meet the Farmers experience featuring Distillery 98’s newly released Half Shells Vodka, distilled with oyster shells and presented in an eco-friendly plastic bottle. Learn something new as local oyster farmers discuss the process of growing oysters from seed to saltine. Each VIP ticket holder will receive early entry into the event as well as oyster and spirit samples. Next, guests to this fantastic feast of meaty mollusks will enjoy an afternoon of oyster tasting and sipping beverages perfectly paired with these briny beauties. There’s nothing like a good oyster pairing — the most classic of which is, of course, Champagne. The crisp bubbles in Champagne complement the flavor of most oysters

because they cut through the richness of this bivalve and heighten its subtler flavors. Dry white wines also pair spectacularly with oysters. Try more acidic wines like a pinot gris or sauvignon blanc — these varietals have a lemony flavor that enhances the flavor of the oysters. Ask any well-schooled foodie, and they’ll advise you to choose a slightly tart, lightbodied wine, as those characteristics play off the brininess of the oysters. Those not enamored by the allure of wine can still enjoy a great pairing as beer is also a great friend of oysters. Try a dark, rich stout or a beer with a sweet and sour flavor which complements the inherent sweetness of the oysters. Check out the many offerings of wine,

craft brews, and spirits from Timbercreek Distillery, Goat Island Brewery, Terrapin Beer Company, Oyster City Brewing Company, and more throughout the day. Tipsy Mule will be mixing cocktails, and Whim Cotton Candy will create custom-flavored cotton candy to add some sweetness to the event. Clearly, oysters have a great many charms. And, as a part of the beating heart of the Gulf Coast’s seafood industry, the Destin Harbor is the perfect location for this tide-to-table event. “Half Shells on the Harbor features a sampling of oyster dishes from local restaurants and oyster farmers who are renowned for their unique cooking methods, flavors, and plate dressings,” says Kelsey Plant, Marketing Manager at HarborWalk Village. “Oysters are considered a Southern delicacy, drawing cravingdriven crowds from near and far to attend this event. It’s such a unique affair on the Harbor, and people are offered a variety of unique tasting experiences. You’ll see beyond the restaurant, into the world of the farmers, and learn the skills behind oyster shucking.” Featuring tastings from more than a dozen local restaurants who are competing and showing off their skills in all things oysters, the festival gives ticket holders the opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of preparations and flavors — some classic, some completely unique — whether baked, grilled, fried, or raw. More than 15,000 oysters will be prepared during the event. And, of course, there will be a variety of libations for finding your perfect pairing. Throughout the course of the afternoon, local band Beau & the Burners will perform on the Main Stage. A portion of ticket sales benefit the Choctawhatchee Bay Estuary Program, Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance, and Fisher House of the Emerald Coast. All oyster shells will be collected and donated to the Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance. All beneficiaries will be on-site at the event providing an opportunity to learn more about these great local, environmental nonprofits.

hildbirth is anticipated with all kinds of really intense feelings: fear, hope, and so much unknown. Thankfully for women today, there are birthing options that will best fit your individual needs. Before hospitals, women gave birth at home with no pain medication. Now, though, hospitals and medicated birth is the default process. However, just because hospitals are the norm doesn't mean they are the only option. Here we have provided a brief overview of all the birthing options so you can start figuring out which one is best for you and hopefully help ease the anxieties surrounding childbirth. When it comes to these options, it is important to remember that they are usually pretty adaptable and can be tweaked here and there to meet your needs. First off is having your baby in a hospital. A hospital is probably your best bet if you are having a highrisk pregnancy. It provides you with medical security and has the necessary tools to make sure you and your baby are healthy. A hospital can provide you with pain medication and the surety they will be right there in case of emergencies. A hospital is also the only environment able to perform a C-section, so keep that in mind when creating a birth plan. The opposite of hospital birth is home birth. Home birth is assisted by a midwife who has specific training in childbirth. Many midwives receive a Master of Science in Nursing and continue their education throughout their lives. Home birth is a way for you to stay within the comforts of your own home and welcome your baby into that environment. It often includes fewer checks and more time just letting your body do its thing. People looking for a more natural approach to birth would want to consider using a midwife in their home. If both hospital births and home births don't feel quite right, you might consider a birthing center. A birthing center is a medical facility specializing in childbirth that is less restrictive and more homelike than a hospital. It can provide a room with a bed and tub that feels softer than a

hospital room, while still having some medical equipment to support your birth. Many birthing centers have doulas there to support you. A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a mother before, during, and shortly after childbirth. A birthing center creates a little home away from home that provides a hybrid environment of both the hospital and home. These are the three main birthing environments, but we would be amiss if we did not mention the fact that these can all be altered to fit your specific needs. You can bring a midwife to the hospital or you can have a doula with you during the process. You can labor longer at home and wait until the last minute to head to the hospital. You can bring more natural practices to the hospital and adapt them to that environment. Remember that the best advocate for you is yourself. If you go in prepared knowing what you want and understanding your options you will be better equipped to inform the doctors of your desires and the specific needs surrounding your pregnancy. With the right amount of preparation, you can start looking forward to your birth with excitement and determination instead of fear and uncertainty.

reast cancer is the most common cancer in women in the United States, except for skin cancers. It is about 30% of all new female cancers each year. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2022 approximately 287,850 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women and roughly 43,250 women will die from breast cancer. Overall, the average risk of a woman developing breast cancer sometime in her life is about 13%. Every October since 1985 has been recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness month. Initially, the goal was to educate women about breast cancer and the importance of early detection tests such as mammograms. Over the past 37 years, however, the goals have been expanded to include acknowledgment and support of breast cancer survivors and those with breast cancer. For many organizations, the month is also an important time to raise funds for breast cancer research and other related causes. The ultimate goal, though, is breast cancer prevention. We can’t change our family history, but we can all take a few proactive steps to reduce our breast cancer risk and improve our overall health. Decrease alcohol intake: The International Agency for Research on Cancer has found alcohol to be related to breast cancer risk with a 7–10% increase in risk for each 10g (~1 drink) alcohol consumed daily by adult women. Be physically active, eat right and try to maintain a healthy weight: Research shows that being overweight or being a normal weight but having a high percentage of body fat increases breast cancer risk. Per the American Cancer Society, most healthy adults should aim for at least 150 minutes a week of moderate aerobic activity or 75 minutes of vigorous aerobic activity weekly, plus strength training at least twice a week. That strength training can serve a second purpose in post-menopausal women by helping us to maintain bone strength! Eating a healthy diet might also decrease your risk of other types of cancer, as well as diabetes, heart disease, and stroke. Breastfeed: Our bodies are so amazing! Studies show that breastfeeding might play a role in breast cancer prevention. The longer you breastfeed, the greater the protective effect. Carefully consider postmenopausal hormone therapy: Some studies show that combination hormone therapy may increase the risk of breast cancer. You may be able to manage your symptoms with non-hormonal therapy and medication. Speak with your personal physician about the risks and benefits of hormone therapy. This October, make sure your mammogram is up to date, participate in Breast Cancer Awareness events, and make some changes to decrease your personal risk because the old adage still holds true: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! 84

Q+A with Scarlett

The annual WSRE Wine & Food Classic returns to Pensacola, Florida, this fall. Guests will join celebrity chef Alejandra Ramos for an evening of dining and dancing on the plaza at The Studer Community Institute building. Alejandra is a television host, chef, and writer, and currently hosts the new PBS series, The Great American Recipe — an uplifting cooking competition show that celebrates the diversity of immigrant and cultural influences on modern American cuisine. This year’s walkabout tasting will feature Latin American and Caribbean cuisine, honoring Hispanic and Latino cultures at the close of National Hispanic Heritage Month. We were able to catch up with Alejandra and find out what some of her favorite great American recipes are and other fun facts.

Scarlett: Have you ever visited Pensacola or the Gulf Coast? Alejandra: I haven’t! This is partly why I’m so excited to visit Pensacola and fully experience the Gulf Coast in October for the Wine and Food Classic. I’ve heard so many amazing things, so I can’t wait to be able to enjoy the beauty and food first-hand! S: Congratulations on hosting The Great American Recipe. What is your favorite American recipe? A: Thank you so much. Hosting The Great American Recipe has truly been such a joy. It’s such a warm and uplifting show that really celebrates the vast diversity and variety of food in this country. I think the amazing thing about working on this show is that I’ve been introduced to so many culinary traditions. And, honestly, that’s why we’re so lucky in this country when it comes to food. We have access to so much and it’s just about getting out there, trying new things, and enjoying it all!

S: Did you grow up watching PBS? What is your favorite PBS show or series? A: I did! I am a life-long PBS fan. It was, like for so many folks, the first network I watched as a child and it continues to be a major influence in my life. Ghostwriter was my favorite show as a kid, and now I’m a big fan of all things Masterpiece! Love a good period romance or British detective show. I just finished watching Hotel Portofino, which was gorgeous, and I enjoy Miss Scarlet and the Duke. But my absolute favorite is Grantchester. I admit I have a bit of a crush on Will Davenport, the handsome vicar/ detective/boxer! S: What’s your favorite “comfort food”? A: I love an egg sandwich at any time of day. My mom used to make them for me when I was sick. I like them on toasted bread or a roll with a little bit of mayo, and the eggs scrambled with butter, plenty of salt, and a dash of cayenne for heat. My husband doesn’t really cook, but it’s the one thing he knows how to make for me when I’m not feeling well. S: What other passions, besides cooking, do you have? A: I’m a reader! I love poetry, mystery novels, and ghost stories. I also love fashion and am always on the hunt for gorgeous pieces to add to my collection. My friend Leah Cohen (a judge on The Great American Recipe) and I love to go to vintage markets together, and we did a lot of thrifting during our off days filming the show in Virginia. S: Do you have a go-to dinner party dish? A: I love a Puerto Rican-style pernil, which is a roast pork shoulder. You

marinate it in citrus and garlic and herbs for a day or two and then roast it low and slow until it falls apart. It’s amazing served with fried plantains, rice, pickled onions, and a big tangy avocado salad on the side. I love dishes like that because they can be prepped in advance and then the oven does all the work so you have plenty of time to get ready and enjoy the party! S: Recommend us your favorite bang-for-your-buck cheese. A: Honestly? Boursin! I know it’s not super fancy, but it’s delicious, affordable, and SUCH a crowd pleaser! I even make a DIY version using cream cheese blended with butter, garlic and herbs. Pair it with black pepper water crackers and it’s always one of the first things to disappear at parties! S: Is there a particular ingredient you always have stocked in your fridge/pantry? *Follow-up: Why/ What dish do you use it in? A: I’m totally obsessed with Spanish chorizo. I always have a few varieties of it in my fridge and pantry — both the smoked and the dried kind. I love it scrambled with eggs, in empanadas with potatoes, in sandwiches with chimichurri herb sauce. I also love to use it to add flavor to seafood. One of my favorite dishes is clams simmered in a spicy tomato and chorizo broth. So simple and perfect for serving with crusty bread on the on the side for dipping!

TV. The spontaneous anything-canhappen nature of it really speaks to my inner theater child! S: When planning a cooking class, or developing a recipe — who do you have in mind for the food you create? A: That’s a great question and it honestly really depends on the network or publication—I think it’s important to have an idea of who you’re talking to when you share recipes or teach. I do my research, and I adjust my recipes or content so that it meets the needs of my audience, while staying true to my style and taste. At the end of the day, it still has to feel authentic to me and my style. I’m never going to share something I wouldn’t want to eat or serve people I love in real life. It’s always about finding that balance between what I personally love and what will resonate with the audience. I guess in some way, I always have a version of myself in mind! S: Your blog is called AlwaysOrder Dessert.com — What is your favorite dessert? A: Key lime pie! Especially frozen and dipped in chocolate!

S: You’ve worked across all media when it comes to food. What’s your favorite way to communicate with your audience? A: I think each medium has its benefits, but I absolutely love television. It combines education with entertainment, and is also just so exciting to make. Especially live

T

he average pregnancy lasts roughly 40 weeks. It seems like a long time to prepare, but that time flies by and before you know it you’re doing the waddle walk around the house. Pregnancy is a wild journey that changes your life from the day you get that positive result. Things start to feel real around the 20-week mark when your bump is starting to pop out and you’re feeling those sweet baby kicks. Then there’s always a lull where you feel like you’ve been pregnant for a million years. Then toward the middle of the third trimester panic can start to set in as you realize a tiny human is about to invade your life and home so soon! I am currently in that last phase. At 33 weeks pregnant with my third baby the reality that I’m running out of preparation time is coming in hot. The natural urge to begin nesting has entered with full force, and I’ve started sorting teeny tiny baby clothes and building the crib. One item that should not be overlooked or pushed to the back burner is your hospital

Ready with Me

bag. I think with my first baby I had my bags (yes, bags as in plural) packed by 30 weeks. As a nervous first-time mom, I had to put all that hyper-focused energy into something useful, so that resulted in a super detailed and curated hospital packing list. My original list included everything from swaddles and onesies to a speaker with a personalized birthing playlist and flameless candles. As a seasoned veteran Mom now, I would advise to be as educated as you can be on your body and birth. That will leave you empowered and ready to take on the many unknowns of both birth and motherhood. You can have the most detailed birth plan and the perfectly packed hospital bag but there will always be some curveballs you didn’t anticipate. If you’re currently staring down at a big baby bump like me and feeling overwhelmed by Pinterest boards of hospital packing lists here are a few tips from one sleepy momma to another.

Need To Bring:

1. Phone chargers & extension cord: A phone is

something that everyone generally has glued to them at all times. If you didn’t hire a professional birth photographer, you’ll definitely want your phone to be charged to document some highlights during labor and those priceless first moments with your sweet newborn. It’s also smart to download a movie or some shows to have on hand if you have a particularly long labor and are feeling restless.

throughout the entire journey as well as a list of who you’d like them to call and text to share news of the bundle of joy after birth.

2. Robe & slippers: Comfort is key at the hospital and

most people are very eager to get out of their hospital gown after birth and into their own clothes. If you’re an expecting mom with an Instagram account you’ve certainly come across the photos of the new mom in her floral robe snuggling her tiny new babe. In addition to a cute robe and slippers you’ll want some pajamas and sticky socks. Sticky socks are a great item to add to your bag so you don’t go sliding around when you’re pacing the halls in labor.

3. Large insulated water bottle with straw top:

Hydration is so important throughout pregnancy, labor, and postpartum. You want something large so you aren’t constantly refilling, something insulated to keep all that pellet ice chilled, and the straw top creates easy sipping when your hands are full.

4. Cozy personal items: One quick and easy way to ease

your anxieties when at the hospital is to try to create a comfy atmosphere by incorporating items from home. A plush blanket and your own pillow do wonders to boost morale postpartum. One pro tip is to use a colored pillowcase so your pillow doesn’t get mixed up with the white hospital pillows.

5. Items for your partner: If you are planning on having a partner, spouse, or birth support person with you at the hospital, you want to make sure to pack supplies for them as well. The sleeping arrangements may range from a reclined chair to a pull-out couch so packing things like a pillow and sleeping bag can create a more comfortable sleeping situation. Other helpful tips are a few energy drinks to help them stay alert to assist you

6. Car seat & car seat cover: Hospitals require you to

have an approved infant car seat properly installed in your vehicle prior to leaving after birth. You can ask hospital staff for help with this or many fire stations will install it safely for you as well. A car seat cover is helpful to shield your newborn's eyes when you first hit that sunlight.

7. Nurse baskets: Nurses are the unsung heroes of birth, and in recent years we’ve seen a rise in popularity of nurse thank you baskets. You can go crazy over the top with these and have them themed and in the color of your babies’ gender, or keep it sweet and simple. A lot of expectant parents put together a basket with yummy snacks, treats, and drinks for nurses to enjoy as they come in and out throughout the labor and delivery process. These are not necessary of course, but are definitely a nice, and I’m sure, greatly appreciated touch. 8. Toiletries for yourself and partner: You’ll want to

pack all of your basic toiletries but some especially useful items during my births were lip balm, hair ties/ clips, a headband, and dry shampoo. Dry shampoo will quickly become your best friend as a new mom.

Want To Bring:

1. Pellet ice & gourmet popsicles: Depending on where you are giving birth and their restrictions during labor, you might be very limited on what you can consume. Ice and popsicles are sometimes all you’re allowed to have, so it’s ok to want the best options available.

2. Towels & shower shoes: Hospitals are notorious for having thin scratchy towels, so bringing a plush one from home is always nice. There’s also nothing quite as revitalizing as that first shower post birth, so bringing your own shower supplies and sandals to wear is helpful.

Leave at Home:

1. Diapers: If you are giving birth at a hospital they will

provide you with newborn diapers to use while you are there, and usually send you home with a few to get started too. A great tip is to have size newborn and size 1 diapers ready at home because you can’t be sure how big your baby will be. My first baby came 2 weeks early, and we ended up needing to stop at Target to grab preemie diapers to get through the first week or two.

3. First baby photo props: Taking that first Instagram-

worthy shot of your new baby to send to loved ones may be important to you or not. If it is, a few items you might want to bring are a personalized sign, pretty swaddle, and coordinating baby hat/bonnet.

4. Nursing supplies: Most hospitals provide you with

a lactation consultant to assist you on learning to nurse your baby if you choose. Some items that can help ease you into nursing are a nursing pillow, lanolin cream, and nursing ice packs.

2. Postpartum care items: The hospital will provide you

with lots of useful items to ease your pain and help with a smooth postpartum recovery so it’s not necessary to pack your own. Some of these typically include pads, the infamous mesh undies, witch hazel pads, lanolin cream, and Dermoplast spray.

3. Entertainment items: Unless you have an extenuating

circumstance or a particularly long labor that you went in early for, you probably won’t have too much free time on your hands in the hospital. Downloading a movie or a book can be comforting to have on hand, but remember you’ll probably be pretty busy.

4. Lots of baby clothes: With this one, again, it’s you live

5. Coming home outfit: If taking that first family

photo with your new baby before leaving the hospital is important to you, don’t overlook packing something comfortable but that you feel cute in. Remember to include coordinating clothes for your partner and baby as well. This is definitely not necessary, but for some people just getting out of pajamas and into a stretchy maxi dress can boost your mood tremendously two days postpartum. It’s all about the little things when you’re a new mom.

and learn. With my first baby, I had a whole bag of little clothes packed, but the reality in the hospital is they are mostly in a diaper and a swaddle. You’re still learning everything, and hospital staff are doing lots of checks on the baby, so you definitely won’t want to be messing with lots of snaps and zippers while changing in the middle of the night. Pro tip: Buy onesie pajamas that have the feet and hand covers attached, preferably with a zipper or magnetic closure down the front and not buttons or snaps to line up.

5. Birthing ball: Check with your hospital, but many

provide larger labor aids like birthing balls, stools, etc. to assist with different labor positions. Some smaller items that might be helpful to bring are massage oils/lotions and a sock with tennis balls in it for counter pressure application. 93

Maureen Bierman

aureen Bierman is well known as the dynamic Director of Marketing and Communications for Step One Automotive Group. Still, many do not know that her marketing journey began at 18 when she left New York City to pursue her B.A. in Communication at Tulane University. She met her husband in New Orleans and, together, moved to Fort Walton Beach. Maureen's career in automotive marketing started with Lee Automotive Group, and in 2017, she stayed and helped with the strategic growth of Step One Automotive Group. Like Step One, Maureen's commitment to the community is impactful and a life-long focus. Her current involvements include the 2023 Chair-Elect for the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber of Commerce, Member of Impact100, and in service on the Board of Directors for the United Way of the Emerald Coast. When Maureen is not working, her favorite ways to pass the time include reading, taking online courses, spending time with her husband, walking in Ferry Park, and doing restorative yoga. A memorable summer for Maureen was in her early 20s when she took off on her own and backpacked across Thailand and Australia — she spent the entire time traveling, staying in youth hostels, and seeing countries.

Jodi L. Ketchersid

odi L. Ketchersid has spent almost two decades of her life navigating the competitive real estate market in Destin, Florida. Most of her business is relationship-based. When she says that, she means not only with her buyers and sellers but with other real estate agents. She has a very tight-knit real estate community and that has always been an integral part of her profession. Knowing who and when to call. She has met some amazing people over the years, and feels very fortunate to be part of real estate as her chosen profession and even more fortunate to have raised her five children in Destin. Jodi’s husband likes to poke fun at her, claiming she talks more people out of buying real estate, but to her defense, she always tries to put herself in her buyers or sellers shoes, and she has been doing this for awhile now. It is never just a transaction. Twenty years ago the Emerald Coast was a lot different, somewhat forgotten, now it seems like everyone has heard about our little slice of paradise, and she loves to see the reality through other people’s eyes.

orn in Brazil to a large, loving family that included nine sisters and three brothers, Angela learned from an early age that hard work pays off. Always wanting to make a difference, she started working at her sister’s beauty salon at the young age of 12. Dreams of success and a better life filled her heart as she grew into the young, independent woman that moved to the U.S. in 1990. Once she was settled into her new American life in Massachusetts, Angela wore many hats: cleaner, cosmetologist, business owner, worship leader at her local church, and most importantly, mother of two beautiful sons. In the summer of 2006, she and her family traded in the cold winters of Massachusetts for the sunny beaches of the Florida Panhandle. This was when she got into the business of countertops. After successfully making a name for herself within the community by coestablishing a well-known countertop business where she worked for 15 years, she has now founded her very own Phoenix Surfaces. Led by Angela’s passion, charisma, honesty, and determination, Phoenix Surfaces not only brings you high-quality craftsmanship but also a friendly, and hard-working team with the motto: “When life throws us stones, we make countertops.”

The Keeper of Lost Things by Ruth Hogan

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up by Marie Kondo Despite constant efforts to declutter your home, do papers still accumulate like snowdrifts and clothes pile up like a tangled mess of noodles? Japanese cleaning consultant Marie Kondo takes tidying to a whole new level, promising that if you properly simplify and organize your home once, you’ll never have to do it again. Most methods advocate a room-by-room or little-bylittle approach, which doom you to pick away at your piles of stuff forever. The KonMari Method, with its revolutionary category-by-category system, leads to lasting results. In fact, none of Kondo’s clients have lapsed (and she still has a three-month waiting list).

[Self-Help]

With detailed guidance for determining which items in your house “spark joy” (and which don’t), this international bestseller will help you clear your clutter and enjoy the unique magic of a tidy home — and the calm, motivated mindset it can inspire.

Anthony Peardew is the keeper of lost things. Forty years ago, he carelessly lost a keepsake from his beloved fiancée, Therese. That very same day, she died unexpectedly. Brokenhearted, Anthony sought consolation in rescuing lost objects — the things others have dropped, misplaced, or accidently left behind — and writing stories about them. Now, in the twilight of his life, Anthony worries that he has not fully discharged his duty to reconcile all the lost things with their owners. As the end nears, he bequeaths his secret life’s mission to his unsuspecting assistant, Laura, leaving her his house and all its lost treasures, including an irritable ghost. Recovering from a bad divorce, Laura, in some ways, is one of Anthony’s lost things. But when the lonely woman moves into his mansion, her life begins to change. She finds a new friend in the neighbor’s quirky daughter, Sunshine, and a welcome distraction in Freddy, the rugged gardener. As the dark cloud engulfing her lifts, Laura, accompanied by her new companions, sets out to realize Anthony’s last wish: reuniting his cherished lost objects with their owners. Long ago, Eunice found a trinket on the London pavement and kept it through the years. Now, with her own end drawing near, she has lost something precious — a tragic twist of fate that forces her to break a promise she once made. As the Keeper of Lost Objects, Laura holds the key to Anthony and Eunice’s redemption. But can she unlock the past and make the connections that will lay their spirits to rest?

[Book Club Worthy]

French Braid by Anne Tyler The Garretts take their first and last family vacation in the summer of 1959. They hardly ever leave home, but in some ways they have never been farther apart. Mercy has trouble resisting the siren call of her aspirations to be a painter, which means less time keeping house for her husband, Robin. Their teenage daughters, steady Alice and boy-crazy Lily, could not have less in common. Their youngest, David, is already intent on escaping his family’s orbit, for reasons none of them understand. Yet, as these lives advance across decades, the Garretts’ influences on one another ripple ineffably but unmistakably through each generation. Full of heartbreak and hilarity, French Braid is classic Anne Tyler: a stirring, uncannily insightful novel of tremendous warmth and humor that illuminates the kindnesses and cruelties of our daily lives, the impossibility of breaking free from those who love us, and how close — yet how unknowable — every family is to itself.

Love at First Spite by Anna E. Collins They say living well is the best revenge. But sometimes, spreading the misery seems a whole lot more satisfying. That’s interior designer Dani Porter’s justification for buying the vacant lot next to her ex-fiancé’s house … the house they were supposed to live in together, before he cheated on her with their Realtor. Dani plans to build a vacation rental that will a) mess with his view and his peace of mind and b) prove that Dani is not someone to be stepped on. Welcome to project Spite House. That plan quickly becomes complicated when Dani is forced to team up with Wyatt Montego, the handsome, haughty architect at her firm, and the only person available to draw up blueprints. Wyatt is terse and stern, the kind of man who eats his sandwich with a knife and fork. But as they spend time together on- and off-site, Dani glimpses something deeper beneath that hard veneer, something surprising, vulnerable, and real. And the closer she gets to her goal, the more she wonders if winning revenge could mean losing something infinitely sweeter.

Welcome Home |

Maximalist Decor written by: Emily Brink

F

or many people, being surrounded by their things can be a source of great comfort. They love to wake up and see a dresser full of knickknacks, sit beside a bookcase full of books, or gaze at a wall full of pictures. With the onslaught of minimalism, people who feel more like a maximalist get worried there is no place for them. We are here to assure you that whatever way you want to decorate your house is perfect. If you feel like the kind of person who loves to collect, decorate, and enhance your space, maximalism might be the way to go. Maximalism is the aesthetic of excess. The rejection of the “less is more” theory and embracing the idea of having more. For the minimalist, the idea of having a house full of things feels like clutter, but for the maximalist, it feels like home. Clutter is not something to fear, but rather something to embrace. It is a way to display your collections and feel at home in the space you create. For the maximalist, they might not even think of it as clutter, it is just their things, and it is how they like to live. 107

107-108_WelcomeHome_SeptOct22.indd 1

8/24/22 10:10 AM

There are many ways to incorporate maximalism into our homes. Everything from the walls, shelves, and floor space can be used to enhance the desired aesthetic. Many people enjoy filling their walls with pictures and art. Arranging various picture frames over a large wall space gives a great way to display family pictures or places you want to remember. Mixing and matching these galleries is also a fun way to add character to your walls. Including art, photos, and more three-dimensional pieces like embroideries really adds an eye-catching effect to the wall. Wallpaper and wall decals are another way to incorporate more design onto a blank wall space. Implementing shelving units in your home can create that extra space needed to fill your home with things you love. Often, we think of shelves only used for books, but they are actually so versatile! Books on shelves are great, but it is also fun to mix and match a bit. Including plants, knickknacks, cool rocks, or collections on your shelves creates an enticing dynamic that begs to be noticed. Think about the things you love, the things that make you feel comfortable and happy, and consider the best way to showcase those things to your guests. In today’s world, many people are afraid of having too much stuff, but in reality, your house is about you and the things that make you feel good. Maximalism is not something to fear, but a way to embrace your space and display the things you love. Your home is the place you spend most of your time, so do not be afraid of filling it with special things and pieces of art. Use your space to its fullest potential! www.ScarlettMag.com

Amber Leftwich photography by: Shanna Magnuson

Hometown Phoenix, AZ Current Residence Panama City, FL Occupation Hair Artist, Custom Shoe Artist Special Skills Air Brushing

How did you get interested in your occupation? My amazing man is always looking at custom shoe videos and different painting videos. He wanted to learn how to paint and airbrush which I have done before, just never on shoes. I taught him how to do airbrush basics and he ran with it. We started doing it as a hobby.

Tell us a little about your favorite part of the job you do. My favorite part would be seeing what people request for their custom shoes and definitely seeing the reaction when they open the box to reveal the finished product!

Let us in on the least favorite part of your job. Prepping the shoes. Lots of sanding and acetone goes into the prep work. I would love to skip that part!

What empowers you as a woman in a typically male industry? Most men tend to be very technical in their skills and crafts. Lots of stenciling and taping clean lines to get a perfect finish. I appreciate this part too but definitely love to soften things too. I love to dive in and just wing it and start painting.

What advice do you have for other women interested in your trade? Dive in! If you love watching art or any kind of craft, give it a try. You might find an amazing talent that you didn’t www.ScarlettMag.com

even know you had. Everything gets better with practice, but you have to start somewhere. No better time than right now!

How do you think diversity in the workplace helps shape our community? In any industry we need diversity. Without various backgrounds we would limit the ability to grow with no bounds. Creativity promotes creativity. We advance by taking inspiration from what’s around us, so what more reason to want to be surrounded by every diversity possible.

Since you’ve started, have you noticed a change in your industry when it comes to opportunities for women? I see more women popping up on social media that are getting into the custom sneakers. It’s definitely an industry open to anyone wanting to try it!

Words you live by… If we don’t step forward, we will remain in the same place.
