H

ave y’all ever heard the song “The House That Built Me” by Miranda Lambert? It is on this issue’s playlist because it sums up how important your home is to who you are when growing up.

Every time I hear it, I think of my first childhood home and all of the wonderful memories I have of growing up there. My parents made the most wonderful home for us when we were little, and one of my biggest goals is to make amazing memories in my home for my family.

We bought our current home a little more than a year ago. My husband is a realtor, so naturally he spent months finding us our perfect home. When he brought me to see our home for the first time, I knew in my bones it was ours. It wasn’t necessarily love at first sight because boy did it need a lot of work, but we just knew this is where we would get to call home.

It took a couple of months of ripping down wall after wall of hideous wallpaper, ripping up dated carpet, and knocking down walls before we could put our personal touches on the house. We painted and redid the floors and, after what felt like forever, it was finally time for us to move in. We have spent the last year making changes, slowly adding finishing touches and personal style. It’s so fun seeing our house becoming our home. There have already been so many memories made, and I can’t wait to see what our home is like in the next few years.

In this issue, we talk about all things “home.” From little details like light fixtures to big changes like wall color, it’s the details that make a house a home. We are so glad you continue to read Scarlett. n front of the cobalt blue, glassframed entry door to the Frank Welch-designed house in the small gated Park Bridge Court enclave in Dallas, Texas, Paula Lambert, the founder of Mozzarella Company welcomes and bids arrivederci to friends and acquaintances.

It seems fitting that they’ve crossed Turtle Creek itself by way of a private drawbridge-like lane to greet America’s “cheese queen.” The warm stunning home, however, belies Paula’s royal standing; its interiors are a portal to her genuine, approachable personality, and they mirror her full, modern, eclectic life and style.

Standing akimbo, the house overlooks the Trinity River’s chelonian offshoot on one side and the Katy Trail, a railroad track-turned urban foot and bike path on the other. Inside, personal effects tell a lifetime of rich stories and warmth resonates throughout. This home is the crowning touch to decades of loyal friendships, art collecting, travel finds, loving relationships, and passion for work and life that only a self-made businesswoman, honorable Dame d’Escoffier, gracious hostess, and philanthropist could bring together in an inviting celebratory fashion. Paula’s residence exemplifies the difference between a house and a home.

In 1982, Paula made cheese long before “artisanal” rolled off the tongues of “foodies” as the descriptive for anything handcrafted and local.

While the entrepreneur was busy convincing chefs in Dallas to use her fresh mozzarella — made daily with locally-sourced milk — instead of Kraft block mozzarella, the fledgling American culinary scene was on the brink of unfolding. As amusing and informative as they were, cooking shows were limited to the public broadcasting variety. Gourmet food retailers were few and far between. In this environment, Paula capitalized on her love affair with Italy by launching a well-conceived, timely business that has allowed her to travel between Dallas and the Bel Paese for the last 36 years.

Reflecting on those early days, Paula concedes, “I loved cooking, and I loved

Italy. I was determined to combine the things I love.”

Remembering her initial trip to Italy, she says, “I fell in love with the light, the color of the light there.” In the early 1960s, the Fort Worth-raised University of Texas graduate visited a friend and was enamored instantly with the country, its foods, and its people. She moved to the Umbrian town of Perugia in 1965 and took odd jobs, did translations, taught English and, eventually, gave wine tours at the noteworthy house of Lungarotti in Torgiano. Paula also attained the U.S. equivalent of a master’s degree in Italian, which she speaks fluently with, admittedly, the best Texas accent.

Prior to her relocation, young Paula had met young Jim Lambert at a wedding. Jim traveled in the summer months when he wasn’t working as a landscaper. On learning that he was going to Europe, more specifically to Italy, a friend asked, “Are you going to look up Paula?” He did. The two married in 1973, and after Jim completed his University of Georgia master’s degree in Landscape Architecture, they moved to Dallas in 1975 where he owned and operated a landscape architectural firm. The post-graduate newlyweds moved into a townhouse Jim owned which, coincidentally, was also designed by Frank.

It’s noteworthy that two of Paula’s homes were designed by the modernist architect, remembered lovingly in his field as the “Dean of Texas Architecture.”

Mentored by the legendary O’Neil Ford, Frank had a unique talent for weaving the natural environment with warm, sophisticated modernism, always peppering his oeuvres with subtle Texas accents.

During a post-graduate architectural fellowship to Paris, Frank developed a passion for photography and became acutely aware of the interplay of light and how it affects a space. Unmistakably a Frank touch, it’s uncanny how the natural light features so beautifully in Paula’s home considering that it’s in the center of Dallas amid nearby tall office buildings. Much like Italy’s light had once captured her heart, Paula says about her Dallas abode, “The light pours in from both the back and the front of the house all day. I love it.”

Paula shares this new home with her boyfriend, George Works, who is retired from a family real estate business.

George and Paula’s late husband were the closest of friends. From the time the newly-married Lamberts moved to Dallas from Georgia, they and the Works were steadfast chums for decades. George stood by his pal Jim’s side for 12 years following a debilitating stroke; he passed away in 2011.

Today, the full and interesting lives of Paula and George serve as their home’s backdrop. To coalesce art, furniture and objets, and to have color play an important role, Paula relied on longtime friend and designer Dan Nelson of Vision Design, Inc. Dan’s projects include everything from five-star island resorts and hotels to some of the most well-appointed homes in Dallas.

Dan says, “Paula and I have known each other for 30 years.” The designer and sometimes sous chef at Paula’s dinner parties was even involved in the search for a house. Working closely with all his clients, he says, “It was truly a collaboration with her.”

“Paula is the Energizer Bunny,” he declares, referring to her vitality and on-the-go lifestyle. After looking for months, it was a delightful surprise when a Welch-designed Park Bridge Court house became available. Giving the illusion that it’s smaller than its 5,000 square feet, the sizable living spaces with loft-height ceilings don’t overwhelm. The house packs a Palladian punch; although large, spatially the rooms envelop the couple in stylish lifesized comfort. “That’s Frank for you,” www.ScarlettMag.com

Dan chimes about his late architect friend.

In his functions as both interior designer and editor of sorts, he cites the living room’s coffee table as an example of how the “cheese queen” and design professional worked well together. “Paula sent me a photo of a dining table she liked in a London restaurant,” he says. Since Paula wanted a farm table for her dining room, Dan conceived of a modified version of the London treasure and had the refined stout, brass-clad coffee table custom made. And, not for a lack of looking for just the right one, he also combined the best of his and Paula’s vision of a farm table and had one made. Depending on which of the two you ask, it seats 12 or 14.

The integration of Paula’s and George’s art and furniture was a welcome challenge for Dan. Paula says, “Dan knew how to use my old things, and he found everything else.” In an era where technology and new materials can advance a designer-client relationship and a project’s successful and budgetfriendly outcome, Dan says, “Design has changed so much. You can do anything these days.”

In a clever nod to Paula’s previous Turtle Creek home, Dan repurposed a rug and converted it into a slip-coverlet for the daybed in her booklined office. And, in a single afternoon, the sofas and living room rug were Dan’s finds at a highend consignment shop.

Original art is everywhere. As if it was made to hang near the front door, the color of which was inspired by the garden gate at Lismore Castle in Ireland, an Arie Van Selm painting, resplendent with the same cobalt blue, commands attention.

Van Selm is a Dutch artist who, like many of the artists in the Lambert-Works home, has a Texas connection. He lives in Dallas. Representations notwithstanding, Dan chose Geroge’s large wooden whale sculpture by folk artist Willard Watson, known as the “Texas Kid,” to sit atop Paula’s former dining table to create a visual break between the foyer and the living room.

cheese authority and doyenne of good taste, Paula has spent decades cultivating the exchange of ideas between and among chefs and nations that only food, wine, and dining among old and new friends realizes. The Dallas icon’s expertise and sophistication reveal themselves in regular television appearances alongside some of the nation’s best chefs. Paula has also been active in culinary organizations and was instrumental in improving cheese competition standards so that judging is fair.

In her non-existent downtime, Paula developed and manages Viaggi Deliziosi, the culinary travel arm to her endeavors. The septuagenarian organizes and guides week-long curated food and wine educational programs to France, Italy, Ireland, and cruises in South America, Scandinavia, Russia, and Cuba. Central to each tour is acquainting patrons with local foods and wines. A day’s activities conclude with a cooking lesson led by Paula or one of the top chefs she’s befriended over the years. Among her culinary chums is Stephan Pyles of Flora Street Café, one of the leading restaurants in Dallas. Make no mistake, however, about who the boss is; whether it’s in her home kitchen, in the Umbrian countryside, on a Silversea’s cruise, or at Ireland’s Lismore Castle, she refers fondly to Stephan and others of his caliber as her “assistants.”

Paula derives tremendous satisfaction from having published two books including the “Cheese Lover’s Cookbook & Guide.” She is proud of Mozzarella Company and its esteemed rank in the culinary world.

It pleases her to know that she was at the forefront of developing artisanal cheese craft in the United States.

The most rewarding, however, and sentimental of the many accolades bestowed on Paula was her 1998 induction to the James Beard Who’s Who of Food & Beverage in America. According to the foundation, this distinction makes Paula one of a “cadre of the most accomplished food and beverage professionals in the country” each of whom “has been identified by his or her peers as having displayed remarkable talent and achievement.”

When a dinner party is afoot in the Lambert-Works home, there’s a bustle of activity in their renovated kitchen as friends, regardless of their rank in the outside world, busy themselves assisting Paula prepare food that will go to the dining room’s beautifully decorated farm table. On the wall between the two most important rooms of the honorary Italian’s house hangs a Barnaby Fitzgerald painting titled “Mount Subasio.” On its slopes lies the town of Assisi. Art and life imitate each other on these glorious evenings. Paula’s character in the existential canvas, as it is in the dinner scenario, is an angel — a being of light — floating and engaged among loved ones. The irony? Barnaby uses egg tempura paint.

Today her company has grown from making a few pounds of fresh mozzarella to producing more than 30 artisanal cheeses, all of which Paula has created and developed. Paula’s cheeses have won hundreds of awards and accolades and are known far and wide for their excellence. The cheeses are sold throughout the USA to fine restaurants and stores.

Applauded as one of America’s pioneer artisanal cheesemakers, Paula is the author of “The Cheese Lover’s Cookbook and Guide” (2000) and “Cheese, Glorious Cheese!” (2007). “The Cheese Lover’s Cookbook and Guide” was recently been released in paperback.

Paula takes an active role in many professional organizations including The American Cheese Society, Les Dames d’Escoffier, The Culinary Trust, AIWF, WCR, and NASFT. She currently serves on the Boards of Dallas’ Better Business Bureau, and Uptown Dallas Public Improvement District. Her accolades include: James Beard Foundation’s Who’s Who of Food and Beverage in America, the Career Achievement Award from Mary Baldwin College, the Award of Excellence from the IACP as Entrepreneur of the Year and from the Dallas Historical Society for Creative Arts. She is a past President of the IACP. A frequent radio and television guest, Paula travels extensively, speaking before groups and teaching cooking classes throughout the USA as well as in Italy and France. She recently founded a new company, Viaggi Deliziosi, and enjoys taking small groups of food lovers to Italy to explore the culture, cuisine and countryside in depth.

ot all heroes wear capes, some wear fabulous heels. Being a woman can be a difficult job. We are often expected to be everything to everyone. Work hard to reach your full potential in your career field, but also raise a family in-between.

Make sure you meet all of your deadlines at work but also bake a casserole and join a book club. While it may seem overwhelming to “do it all,” there are a few local women who seem to have it figured out. And, for that, they are my heroes; or should I say heroines. Malala Fund said, “I want every girl to know that her voice can change the world.” This group of women are bravely climbing to the top and making a difference in the lives of those around them.

In these articles, we are raising a glass to some amazing women in our community. As successful businesswomen and entrepreneurs, these women are the examples that we need for our youth. Some are mothers, some are bosses, some are adventurous, some lead quietly from the sidelines, but there is one thing they all have in common — they are heroines. The leaders, the path blazers, the extraordinary women that always go a step above the rest. A heroine is defined as a woman admired or idealized for her courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.

These fearless women are that and more.

omen supporting women is something this heroine exhibits on a daily basis. Jordin Elise Early currently works as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with Bay Area Psychological Consultants. For the past four years, she has specialized in treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. She is also involved with Never Alone Retreats which helps young widows process their grief after tragically losing their husbands. While Jordin has lived in the Panhandle for the past 18 years, she is a Texas girl at heart. However, nothing compares to the Emerald Coast.

Working with Never Alone Retreats, facilitated through Be Still Ministries, has allowed Jordin to merge her occupation with her passion for helping others at a really deep level. In aligning with their goals of helping widows process trauma associated with losing their spouse, their retreats offer respite, hope, and healing. They have also partnered with the Gary Sinise Foundation to create retreats structured specifically for the widows of military and first responders. Taking the time to invest in herself and her emotional, spiritual, and mental well-being has really impacted Jordin’s ability to show up in her own life. She has her own therapist, attends spiritual retreats, and reads books that help shift her life in positive directions by pushing her understanding and knowledge of the world around her.

Jordin also has a circle of trusted friends she can turn to when she needs honest counsel and feedback.

Growing up close to her immediate and extended family, Jordin learned the value of family at an early age. Being a mother is one of Jordin’s greatest accomplishments. Her and her husband have done their best to raise children who take care of the world around them and have a heart for helping other people. They do this by stepping up to help anytime they see a need. Whether that be mowing a neighbor’s lawn, fostering animals from the overcrowded animal shelter, or participating in mission trips from an early age. Her goal is to raise children who become adults that are selfless and giving of their time, resources, and talents.

Her work is certainly paying off because when she was asked who her biggest female influence was she named her 12-year-old daughter Peyton. Peyton is carefree, spirited, adventurous, and big-hearted. Seeing the woman Peyton is becoming challenges Jordin everyday to be an example of a strong woman Peyton can look up to. Jordin is also influenced by the women she works with in her profession.

She is drawn toward authenticity and sincerity. With all the false pretenses floating around in today’s society, Jordin hopes to raise her daughter and influence the women around her to live their authentic selves.

Personal autonomy and personal responsibility are huge factors when it comes to the way Jordin mentors both those in her professional career and her career as a mother. People want to feel seen, heard, and understood so that is where she starts when put in a leadership position. If she could turn around and tell her 20-year-old self a bit of advice, it would be to start identifying your strengths and weaknesses early on. Once you know where you are lacking, you can improve those things. Grit and perseverance will get you far in life but don’t forget grace and patience.

Looking forward, Jordin hopes to continue her work with Never Alone Retreats and the Gary Sinise Foundation, but also continue serving at the smaller levels.

She anticipates church projects, classroom volunteering, and animal rescue organizations. As long as the focus is outward rather than inward, she is on the right path.

rowing up around horses, Victoria “Vickie” Berry really learned the value of hard work. She loved working with the animals and caring for their needs. When she was a young girl, Vickie fell off one of her horses and broke her dominant hand. Losing the use of her hand was definitely not an easy thing for her to deal with, but when her doctor referred her to an occupational therapist things started turning positive! By working diligently with her occupational therapist, Vickie was able to gain full use of her hand.

She had such a good experience with occupational therapy that she fell in love with the profession.

Currently, Vickie lives in her hometown of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, and works as an Occupational Therapist. Because of her injury as a child, Vickie now specializes in upper extremity rehabilitation, which basically includes the upper arm, the forearm, and the hands. One of the things she loves about working in this area is the ability she has to help those in the armed services and their families. She helps both active and retired service members in the community and does her best to give back to them where she can. Vickie does her best to make sure that both she and the patient are having a good time. That is how she remembers it when she was a child; therapy was fun for the therapist and the patient!

The importance of hard work has propelled Vickie throughout her life. In fact, just recently she was able to really enjoy the fruits of her hard work. In December 2020, Vickie earned her Doctorate in Occupational Therapy, an incredibly impressive feat knowing that she was

working full time and going to school, as well as living through the crazy year that was 2020. It is her proudest accomplishment, and she is happy to brag about it. We certainly do not blame her!

Growing up, Vickie had an amazing mentor to look up to and learn from. Her mother is her biggest female influence, and it is no wonder why. Vickie’s mother was an Active Duty Military Officer while being a Nurse and the Vice President for a national company. Somehow she still made the time to be a wonderful mother. Vickie hopes she can be as successful as her mother.

For the past little while, Vickie has been working with a student who was doing a three-month rotation. This has been such a fun process for Vickie because she has been able to help this student learn about the profession and help to educate them further. She feels very strongly about giving back to the profession through the education of future doctors. Turning around to help the next generation of doctors allows her to reflect on her past self as well. If Vickie had the chance to tell her 20-yearold self some advice she would remind young Vickie to just keep working hard. In the end, it is worth missing out on a few parties to become a successful adult. Vickie hopes to continue giving back and to continue giving her patientsthe best experience possible.

B

orn in the “Bass Capital of the World,” Eufaula, Alabama, this heroine now lives in the beautiful Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, otherwise known as Hogtown Bayou. Margaret Anne White, Maggie, has an impressive list when it comes to her occupation and community involvement.

She is currently the Community Relationship Ambassador for Sunset Bay Cafe as well as the Bar Manager, Cocktail Menu Creator, and Bartender at Slick Lips Seafood.

She also does the public relations for both of these restaurants. On the side, Maggie holds the position of Professional Development Chair for the local Northwest Florida Public Relations chapter and is a member of the Walton County Chamber of Commerce.

Getting to this point in her life was no easy task. Maggie only just turned 30 this year, but her 20s certainly gave her a run for her money.

Throughout all of the craziness, Maggie did her best to believe in herself and learn to rely on her amazing support system. Some things she learned was to be vulnerable even if it feels uncomfortable!

Vulnerability allows people to see who you are and for them to help you when you need help. Recognizing the value in failure also helped her come out through the other side.

There are lessons to be learned in failure because it will help direct the next course of action. Maggie’s family, friends, and mentors were huge influences during this time as they gave her a foundation to fall back on. She is a firm believer that the hardships everyone faces are put there to make better people out of us all. Some of her best advice to her

In her free time, Maggie is volunteering with the Northwest Florida chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association. She hopes to continue educating herself on local issues the community is facing as well as continuing to get more involved with other aspects of the community.

Maggie does her best to wake up with a smile and has a desire to make everyone laugh. She believes that people have the ability to change the lives of those around them.

Maybe smiling and being kind to that random person on the street isn’t going to change the entire world, but it could very well change that person’s life. She is learning that we all have this innate goodness in us as humans, and that is what makes the world a better place.

The past few years have been life changing for Maggie herself. In 2018, they opened Slick Lips and those under her leadership have put so much into the functionality of the restaurant. Blood, sweat, and tears were given to make the experience of the customers great, but more importantly, the people around her have learned they can just be themselves and trust Maggie.

September 2021 marks the one-year celebration of sobriety for both Maggie and her boyfriend. In that year,

iving outside her comfort zone is a common place for this heroine. Hilary Farnum-Fasth is the queen of pushing herself further and further into uncharted territory. Everyone has their own version of a comfort zone, but in Hilary’s own words, she lives outside “anyone’s definition of a comfort zone!” When an opportunity comes along, Hilary jumps for it. She will push through every boundary and pursue that opportunity until there is nothing left to give. The word “no” is not often uttered because all things give an experience, and Hilary loves to have those experiences. Looking back on her 20-year-old self, Hilary would say, “Don’t hesitate for one second to take the risks.”

Currently, Hilary lives in Northwest Florida, but she was originally born in New York. She is a broker and the owner of Corcoran Reverie, a luxury real estate company based right here in Northwest

Florida. Hilary and her team work tirelessly to provide their clients with the best home to fit their situation and lifestyle. Hilary has always had a strong pull to give back to those who cannot help themselves. This desire has led her to become involved with a number of organizations such as Food for Thought, The Sonder Project, and Seaside Schools to name a few. The many years of helping with these various charities has only solidified Hilary’s desire to do good and make the community a better place.

Getting into the real estate business, Hilary had two wonderful mentors who really helped to coach and teach her the best ways to go about that career. Their ideas were visionary, and Hilary soaked up every word. Having these mentors was vital to her career because it put her on the path for success at an early age. Another person that put Hilary on this path was her mother with the example she provided. Her mother had a strong work ethic as well as a fierce belief in Hilary’s ability to do whatever she put her mind to. She taught Hilary to work hard for what she wanted but also to be strong when things go wrong.

Taking some pages from her mother’s book, Hilary is so proud of herself and her ability to balance being a wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, and career in a maledominated field. The success of those she mentors is also a success for Hilary, which is why she works so hard to help those she mentors achieve their dreams. She has helped quite a few women launch successful and lucrative real estate businesses.

Hilary has a big heart and loves to serve others. She attributes her ability to lead others to success as coming from her heart. She truly wants the best for them and will do her part in helping them get there.

• Ultimate Guilty Pleasure: My ultimate guilty pleasure is a day at the spa with people in my life that I want to have time with, without all the distractions. True confession though, I am a major spa snob, and I really want to also be a spa consultant and put together every amazing aspect from spas all over the world and create the perfect spa experience.

• Currently Reading: I read constantly, but I go between at least three to four books at any given time. I love to bounce between business-related books to interesting biographies, to a fun beach read or historical-based book. I believe reading is the number one way to further yourself as a person. I have never been a TV person.

• Dream Vacation: My dream vacation is anywhere I can be with my family or friends experiencing new things. I desire to experience all this amazing life has to offer, as often as possible. To travel anywhere with the people I love is a dream life to me. But of course, New York City is always top of my list!

As an awardwinning Realtor for Better Homes and Gardens, Jessica strives to provide her clients with the most professional service and to make them feel at home. The awards do not matter nearly as much as the impact she can leave on their lives and the lives of their family.

Born and raised in the Pensacola area, Jessica has always been drawn back here. It is a paradise she is glad to call home, and she strives to give back to the community not only by finding families beautiful homes to live in, but through numerous other nonprofit organizations like Gulf Coast Kid’s House, Studer Community Institute, Pace Center for Girls, and Manna Food Bank. She is also very proud to serve as a Board member of IMPACT 100 Pensacola Bay Area, which is an all-women philanthropic organization with an incredibly well organized and goal-focused Board. After her tenure at IMPACT 100, Jessica plans to continue working with nonprofits and use the knowledge she gains to make a more significant impact on the community.

Adversity can be a huge catalyst for people to embrace a life of giving back. This is true for Jessica as she pushed through the hard times to become driven to help others in tough situations. Her life could have gone in so many different directions, but she feels fortunate it has left her in a place where she can serve. The Krewe of SWAT, a Mardi Gras krewe, opened their doors to Jessica and showed her

Surrounding yourself with people who truly believe in and want the best for you is a great way to build confidence and overcome challenges. This is what Jessica has done. She learned to never let obstacles stand in her way; instead, she got creative with the solutions she found that still led her to her goals. Every situation presented her with an opportunity to grow into a better wife, friend, inspirational leader, and business woman. A big influence on her business personality was Jessica’s grandmother who was a business woman herself. Her grandmother taught her not to listen to naysayers, stand out in a world run by men, and make smart financial decisions (which helped Jessica purchase her first house at 19!!). The biggest lesson Jessica learned from her grandmother was how to fail gracefully. Failure is simply a part of life because it comes with trying. Jessica learned that the ultimate loss was to never even try.

Mike Duncan, Jessica’s husband and soul mate, has always been her biggest cheerleader as well as the person who calls her out if she is acting out of line. Jessica prides herself on being able to work through problems and become stronger. Jessica deems her marriage as “the most rewarding work of [her] life” because she receives the ultimate gift of unconditional love.

Inspiration seems to flow from Jessica’s veins. She loves seeing people go after their dreams and achieve what is in their heart. Jessica found that the best way of inspiring others is to truly believe in them — believe in their talents, ambitions, and dreams, and watch them succeed. Her one bit of advice to her 20-year-old self is to not worry when people drift in and out of your life. Everyone has different seasons and enters different phases in their lives.

There are approximately 161.6 million men in the United States. That’s a big number, but all we need is a few good men to make a difference. We are lucky that the Emerald Coast has as many good men as they do palm trees. Our area is booming with strong male role models helping to lead the way and to guide the younger generations down the right path.

These men are out there in our community making a real difference. They are running businesses, they are volunteering, they are working at the local nonprofits, they are fathers, and they are husbands. These men are juggling all of these jobs and are doing it with style and grace. Being a good man is more than just following the rules, it’s being the individual who goes above and beyond.

It’s being the man who isn’t afraid to stand up for what is right. A truly good man is one whose traits perfectly balance out. He is both strong and sensitive, a leader but can also take direction. A good man is someone you can look up to.

Logan Boesch CEO, Florida Electric

ogan Boesch is not a Florida native, but he has certainly done his part to make this place home. He was born in Truman, Minnesota, and moved across the country to be the founder and CEO of Florida Electric, a solar company.

Part of the mission of the company is to provide renewable energy to people who need it. They install both residential and commercial solar panel projects.

In his free time, Logan enjoys participating in beach cleanups. Growing up far from the beach, he has come to learn how to appreciate its beauty and respect its vastness.

Logan holds the belief that God only gave us one planet Earth and it is important that we do everything within our power to assure that our children’s children can also enjoy its beauty and grace. Plus, if we have dirty beaches there is no way we can fully enjoy them ourselves — so we should be grateful!

Something else Logan enjoys that helps the upcoming generation is starting conversations with younger kids.

He is constantly astonished at the kind of things young children can teach fully grown adults about the world around them. It is easy to teach kids something new, there is always something they do not know or understand, but allowing yourself to be taught by a child instead shows a certain type of character, one that is eager to continue growing and learning. Sitting down with children and reading or talking with them is something that Logan always looks forward to fondly. He enjoys asking them questions to help them decide their path in life, but he just as much loves to truly listen to what they have to say and learn from their little minds.

When it comes down to Logan’s long-term business goals, he has big ones. Within the next five years, Logan intends to start a nonprofit that would provide solar to families who cannot afford to pay their current electric bill.

Once that goal is well underway and local families have power, Logan will expand his philanthropic endeavors beyond our borders. There are many communities who have never had running water or electricity. Logan hopes to bring both of these modern necessities to third world countries.

While in the process of building his own company, Logan has aided the development of a few different multimillion dollar companies. This allowed him the opportunity to interact with many different people who were quite extraordinary. He counts helping others on their journey as a blessing even if it means losing a good employee. If they are moving on to bigger and better

things, if it is right for them, or if it will help them grow, Logan counts his leadership as a success.

His best advice to his 20-year-old self is to work hard and believe in yourself. He would say to follow your heart and learn to live your life on your own terms and for yourself.

He would also remind himself that there are other people in the world going through similar circumstances so it is important to have empathy and to do your best to help them along their journey as well.

W

hile growing up, Shervin Rassa spent a lot of time hanging out at the local YMCA. It was there he learned the importance of having mentors and, in return, mentoring others. In part, this led him to his current occupation as Chief Executive Officer of the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast. Shervin grew up in Tampa but currently resides locally in Shalimar, Florida. The Boys & Girls Clubs of the Emerald Coast is a youth development organization that exists to serve more than 5,000 youth across four counties here in Northwest Florida.

His time at the YMCA in Tampa was not his only exposure to mentorship. Shervin grew up surrounded by many positive adult figures. Some of these included people like his parents, teachers, and coaches. Different people showed up at different times in his life and became mentors when he most needed them. Having these positive experiences with adults helped guide his future and lead him to where he is now.

Sacrificing everything, Shervin’s mother is easily his greatest female influence. It was not an easy task, but his mother helped move his family from Iran to the United States. She wanted her children to have better opportunities than Iran could afford and to raise them in a safe setting. His mother always put her family first, therefore teaching her children how to be compassionate, responsible, selfless, and hard workers.

Working tirelessly as Chief Executive Officer, Shervin is proud of his accomplishments within the organization. The Boys & Girls Clubs has a continuous impact throughout the community. The professionals associated with the clubs help spread positivity to those they associate with. This positivity permeates throughout the community through the youth, their families, and the successes those youth achieve throughout their lives.

Shervin also volunteers his time with organizations like the Rotary Club of Destin, All Sports Association, and our local Chamber of Commerce. It has always been important to Shervin to immerse himself in the community and to serve others. He believes our true legacy is how prepared the youth and community is to face the future we leave them.

Investing in the professionals around him through personal and professional growth is an important part of Shervin’s leadership model. Many people he has worked

with have gone on to bigger roles in the organization and throughout the community. He is proud anytime someone he works with is able to progress onto something that will make their lives better.

Qualities of empathy have been a part of Shervin’s life for as long as he can remember. If he could turn back time and give his 20-year-old self a bit of advice, he would remind him to always lead with his heart, compassion, and empathy. Believe in the power of goodness and things will fall into place. Looking toward the next five years, Shervin will continue investing his time with local organizations and doing his best to create a future that the youth of today will be able to enjoy tomorrow.

f Jim Gilliland could look back on his 20-year-old self and give a bit of advice, it would be to “live your passion,” and that is certainly what he tries his best to do every single day. Jim grew up in Talladega, Alabama, but joined the military when he was 19 years old. Most of his military service was based in the Panhandle so he decided to stick around. Jim currently lives in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, where he is a Broker Associate at RE/MAX Gulf Coast Realty.

As Jim looks back on his early years, he counts his mother as the most influential female in his life. His desire to live a passionate life can be traced back to something

Jim’s mom said early on. She always told him, “You get to where you want to go by helping as many people as you can get to where they want to go.” This sentiment truly influenced his life going forward. After enlisting, Jim spent the next 20 years as a member of the United States Air Force as an airman. During this time, Jim completed his bachelor’s degree by attending night school and was then selected for officers training and became an officer in the military. Jim received the Leo Marquez Award as the Company Grade Munitions Officer of the Year for the Air Force. The award recognizes base-level military and civil service aircraft, munitions, and missile maintenance personnel who have demonstrated the highest degree of sustained job performance, job knowledge, job efficiency and results.

Upon retirement from the military, Jim became a licensed real estate agent and joined RE/MAX in 1992.

He loves helping people achieve their real estate dreams.

Jim is also very proud of going into real estate and creating a successful business receiving many awards for his accomplishments including the prestigious Circle of Legends Award with RE/MAX. He established the Jim Gilliland Real Estate Team, and over the years he has created a consistent and successful business. He greatly enjoys mentoring his teammates and making sure they have successful careers of their own. However, it is not only through helping people find beautiful homes in the Gulf Coast area and investing in his team that Jim gives back to the community around him. Ever since 1992, Jim has given a percentage of his own commission for every single transaction to the Children’s Miracle Network.

Through the different experiences Jim has had during his life he has truly come to understand that helping the people around you will get you a lot further in life than focusing solely on yourself. His mother instilled an incredible work ethic, desire for education, and the need for honesty into Jim at an early age. His 20 years in the U.S. Air Force shaped Jim into someone who has the desire to do good.

Real estate gave him the ability to help those who need it.

He hopes to continue giving back through charities, as well as through investing in his business to help the members of his team achieve their goals and the people of the Gulf Coast find homes that will change their lives.

e’ve all heard about man caves — that special room in the house where a man can be a man.

They were originally created to provide a space away from the usual feminine-inspired decor around the rest of the house. A space to put sports memorabilia, hunting trophies, and other personal belongings.

However, a new rival, the she shed, continues to grow in popularity. You could say it is the woman's response to a man cave. It is basically a storage shed that is given a makeover to create a private space away from the home for a woman to enjoy.

The concept of a she shed is a dedicated space outside the home. All you need is a little backyard space, and you are set. She sheds can be used for a plethora of reasons. A place to host a book club. An art studio. A place for the girls. A quiet place to work. A gardening studio. A relaxing space for yoga.

Places like Lowe’s, Home Depot, and Best Buy are starting to publish guides on how to put together the perfect she shed, giving ideas for adding French doors, chandeliers, TVs, a wine cooler, and so much more.

The growing trend is also seen all over Pinterest with endless pins and posts of she shed ideas and decor.

Creating a she shed does not have to be expensive if you already have an old shed or playhouse in your backyard. You can gut it out and start from scratch. Or, give it a fresh look with a new coat of paint inside and out or add a stone path and small deck.

If you do not already have a backyard shed, buying a new one can cost a couple thousand dollars, but is definitely worth it if you want a place to yourself. You get the option of adding air conditioning or heating units, depending on how the weather is where you live, and you can add fun flooring. Also, windows are key.

Adding large windows makes the space feel light and airy.

Decor is also key when creating the perfect she shed.

Adding a big mirror to the corner gives the illusion that the space is bigger than it actually is. Putting in a couch with some throw pillows and blankets will make the space more cozy and relaxing. This is your chance to make the space your own. Store your yoga mats, books, gardening supplies, art supplies, and your own personal decorations that do not have a place in the main house.

The decoration options are endless, and you can find almost everything you need shopping local or thrifting at a cost that won’t break the bank.

If men can have a room for themselves, it is time for women to have a place too. After a long day of work or wanting time away from the kids, it is the perfect getaway without having to leave home. And this is one festival that will definitely get you in the mood … … for eating and drinking. The festival kicks off with an exclusive Sip N’ Shuck Experience with Chef Rifko of Oysters XO at Harry T’s Lighthouse.

Never shucked an oyster? You can follow along with Chef Rifko as he leads a hands-on demonstration on the art of oyster shucking. Each guest will receive early entry into the event as well as their own oyster shucking kit, a dozen raw oysters, and two complimentary drinks to enjoy.

Next up, you’re in for an afternoon of oyster tasting and sipping beverages perfectly paired with these briny beauties. There’s nothing like a good oyster pairing — the most classic of which is, of course, Champagne.

The crisp fizziness of Champagne complements the flavor of most oysters because it cuts through the richness and

heightens the subtler flavors. This duo is especially refreshing when the oysters and Champagne are well chilled.

Dry white wines also pair beautifully with oysters. Try a Pouilly Fuissé, pinot gris, or sauvignon blanc — these choices have a lemony flavor that enhances the flavor of the oysters. The rule of thumb is really to choose a wine that is light and slightly tart which plays off the brininess of the oysters. Chablis is another smart choice, as the mineral, flinty notes of the wine work well with oysters, and the acidic flavor makes it an ideal choice for pairing with seafood.

Not a wine lover? Try a dark, rich stout or a beer with a sweet and sour flavor as they will complement the sweetness of the oysters. At the event, Kombi Keg will be pouring draft samples of a variety of craft brews.

Margaritas have a citrus zing that pairs well with any seafood, so make sure to stop by Margaritaville. Timbercreek Distillery and the Tipsy Mule will also be on hand creating spirited cocktails to sip on.

Clearly, oysters are the source of much interest. And, as a part of a coastal town with their finger on the pulse of the seafood industry, the Destin Harbor is the perfect location for this new tide to table event, held on Sunday, Nov.

Throughout the afternoon, local band, Longleaf Drive, will have guests tapping their toes to bluegrass favorites.

A portion of ticket sales will benefit the Emerald Coast Reef Association, Fisher House of the Emerald Coast, Choctawhatchee Basin Alliance, and the Choctawhatchee Bay Estuary Program.

ocal trends of townhomes in our area have never compared to the offerings in the larger cities around our country. In the past, the townhome lifestyle in the Pensacola and surrounding areas meant no privacy, limited outdoor space, basic accommodations, and not luxury. As a real estate agent, I experienced the disappointment of people looking to move to the area, thinking they would find the perfect townhome. Thankfully this trend is changing for our area with the new development: The Village at Wright Street.

This development is changing the townhome experience for our local market, and it sure does not disappoint. While these townhomes are the first of their kind in our area, they are setting a trend that I am sure we will see more of soon.

very year we buy expensive gym memberships to only use them for a while, then never use them again. We try, year after year, to succeed at our fitness resolutions, but then we “never have time” or it is “too inconvenient” to go workout.

Do these excuses sound familiar?

Well, having a home gym can make your fitness goals more achievable.

Going to a gym with all the fancy equipment sounds nice, but let’s be real; you will probably never even use half of it. But, investing in equipment you will use to reach your goals is worth the cost.

Working out at home also has a lot of benefits. There are no monthly fees, and a home gym can be inexpensive depending on the equipment you buy. Also, a home gym is convenient because it is available whenever you feel like working out, and you do not have to drive to and from. The workouts are also just as effective as using the gym, as long as you are willing to put in the time and the effort.

Depending on your available budget, you can create a full-on gym or just buy some dumbbells and equipment that can be set up as needed. There is a lot of different equipment on the market to choose from. The most challenging part is deciding what not to get. To begin building your gym, you should think about investing in an exercise mat, dumbbells, workout bench, and a stability ball. If this equipment is used correctly, you will be able to have what you need to work every muscle in your body. Other equipment to start with are workout bands and kettlebells. This equipment is also easy to tuck away if you do not have a space to set up a gym. However, if you choose to have a dedicated home gym there is a sizable amount of equipment available. Although these tend to be more expensive, they are a good investment if you are looking to set up a permanent gym at home. You might want to consider equipment like a barbell rack, leg press, shoulder press, or chest fly machine. Also

adding cardiovascular machines like an elliptical, treadmill, or stationary bike are great if you prefer cardio.

Lastly, you can workout at home without any equipment. Bodyweight workouts are a perfectly good option to stay in shape. Without progressing in weights, you progress in sets or use household objects as weights.

Some might argue that working out at home can be boring, so creating an environment and space is essential to keep your interest in exercising. You can achieve this by setting up a designated space in your home, or by having equipment in a space in your house that is easy to pull out. Having designated spaces or easy access can help reduce excuses.

Another way to stay motivated is to follow workout videos on YouTube.

Most of the videos are designed for at-home workouts and can be really fun. There are plenty of different trainers to choose from, so you are bound to find a few you like. Trying different workouts instead of doing the same ones over and over again can keep you from getting bored as well. Variation keeps things interesting and makes you want to try different workouts. It’s all what you make it, so make it great!

alk into any public space and you’ll see more than a handful of people with their ink proudly on display such as arms covered in multicolored sleeves of carefully created pictures, legs sporting emblems or images that tell pieces of their history, and backs that serve as the map to the lives they’ve lived. And, while permanent makeup may seem akin to the tattoo artistry adorning the bodies of millions of people all over the world, it is only the needle and ink that link the two.

It is here that they diverge, where one becomes not only a tool to enhance and highlight beauty but also to heal and repair.

When approached with the respect it deserves, permanent makeup is, in fact, a very scientific and precise undertaking.

Consequently, the more knowledgeable the technician, the more realistic the results. “I’m constantly learning,” says Trinkette Parker, Micro-Pigmentation Specialist and owner of Permanent Makeup Clinic at their new location in Pace. “To me, it’s not just implanting the pigment, it’s knowing where you’re implanting the pigment. That is where being an artist sets you above the rest.”

Such knowledge allows technicians to provide their clients with the best possible results, whether they are shading eyelids or applying pigments to a reconstructed breast after a mastectomy. Thanks to advancements made in pigments and needles even surgical scarring from facelifts can be corrected through the micro-pigmentation used in permanent makeup.

Even so, micro-pigmentation is still primarily used for everyday purposes. Many clients simply wish to streamline their daily makeup routine, and permanent cosmetics can provide ease and assurance that an active lifestyle will not be slowed down by running makeup. Fortunately, such convenience is attainable with virtually no downtime or pain. Trinkette has worked to develop her own numbing

agent as well as refining her techniques to make her clients as comfortable as possible during all permanent makeup procedures. Most clients are healed within a week. And while eyebrows have some initial swelling and might seem stark, it’s only temporary and on the surface; the skin that grows over it will eventually give it the powdered look of an eyebrow pencil, and the hairline strokes make it look realistic. “That’s my goal — for no one to know you’ve had it done. I never want anyone to walk out and have someone point out the fact that they had their makeup done.”

Trinkette herself is a walking advertisement for the possibilities of micro-pigmentation. Her own sparkling eyes are rimmed in liner, her lips outlined and eyebrows shaded to set off a face that exudes both friendliness and confidence.

hen you’re a kid it’s all about the birthday parties — the more cake and bounce houses the better. As you round the corner into adulthood you enter wedding territory — bridal showers, bachelor parties, engagement parties, and more. It feels like you’re constantly ordering a lacy white robe or crystal candlesticks. After the wedding madness comes the babies — the baby showers or sip and sees. You trade in your china purchases for pacifiers and receiving blankets. In between all of these big life events are the home purchases. After you take the obligatory photo standing in front of your new stack of bricks grinning ear to ear holding up your shiny set of keys, it’s time to plan your housewarming party!

If you don’t want a bunch of lavender scented candles and “Live, Laugh, Love” wooden signs for gifts, consider throwing a stock-the-bar party.

These parties are guaranteed fun with libations and good times flowing. If you’re throwing the party for yourself, a full registry might not be appropriate.

But, you can consider adding to the invite liquors you don’t love and some of your favorites to ensure you don’t get six bottles of red wine and handles of vodka when you’re a beer and margarita drinker. Throwing a party is an art form and one done best with finesse. Set the scene for your guests to have a great time. OUCHDOWN! It is officially college football season.

Here in the South, college football is not just a sport, it’s a lifestyle. You could say we take it pretty seriously around here!

So, we do not just grab a bag of chips and plop down on the couch. We have big ol’ parties to watch with all of our closest friends. We do not always cheer for the same team, but there is always good fun. In this article, we will coach you on how to throw the best football party on the block.

A great football party at home starts with great food. There are so many options for food, and none of them are wrong.

Themed food bars are always fun and ALWAYS a crowd favorite. I am talking about hot dog bars, chili bars, and slider bars. The concept is simple, you have your main food (i.e., hot dogs) and then all of the toppings/condiments out for your guests to do on their own! It takes the guesswork out of what everyone wants, and it is self-serve.

Another great food option is appetizers and small bites. You can either provide them as the host or have a potluck where all the guests bring a hot or cold appetizer dish. It all depends on your budget and comfort level with the group of people you are inviting. A few great options are meatballs, buffalo chicken dip, pigs in a blanket, chicken wings, and cookies. All appetizers are great, and the combinations are endless.

The decor is where you get to have some fun. Start with your team's colors and go from there. Add the pops of color to your tablescapes with fresh flowers, cutlery, and napkins. Balloon decorations are all the rage. Find a local provider who does balloon installations or look up a DIY on Pinterest. Another

favorite way to draw in your theme is customized sugar cookies. Think football-shaped cookies, team mascots, and logos! The little details make a big difference.

Now that the atmosphere is set, it is time to think about your appearance and outfit. Usually, a football party is pretty casual.

It can still be quite hot at the beginning of football season so trendy shorts and a cute team T-shirt or jersey are great options. Elevate the look by adding lots of jewelry and strappy sandals. Team-colored sundresses are also a great way to go if you want a dressier look. As the weather cools off, jeans become our go-to! Pair mom jeans with a team jersey tied in the front and sneakers for a fresh casual look! When in doubt about what to wear, you cannot go wrong with your team's colors.

Whatever you choose to wear, whatever you decide to serve, and however you choose to decorate, remember to have fun.

Your guests are sure to have a blast and enjoy watching the game. So, pull out the pompoms and cheer for your favorite team. It is time to score!

And you probably wouldn’t see a woman wearing Louboutin heels and a pencil skirt headed to play a rousing game of softball. But then again, people surprise you, and they say never to judge a book by its cover. If you want to make your home your sanctuary, a place you come home to after a long day where you feel instant comfort and bliss, then it takes effort and time. It also needs to reflect who you are and what makes you happy. When you walk into someone’s home for the first time, you are stepping into their life. You are seeing items that bring them joy with the choices they surround themselves with. You are seeing what makes them comfortable, what their vibe is, and a piece of who they are. The color palettes you choose, the textures you use, and the elements of style you incorporate all play into your personal interior design style. Grandmillennial has been adopted by the mid-20s to late30s age range and is bringing “granny chic” to the modern day home. This hybrid style takes an “of the moment” twist on ruffles, and embroidered linens, and floral wallpaper. For many, it’s a fresh take on a comfortable style that they’ve grown up with. A golden mirror and an ornate cabinet filled with bone china has become both timeless and trendy. And why have beautiful flatware and monogrammed cloth placemats if they aren’t going to be seen? Part of the grandmillennial design style is welcoming back the wonderful world of entertainment. A lot of this generation are rebelling against being overworked, overstimulated, and overscheduled, and they are craving the slower simpler days of yesteryear. They are bringing back dinner parties and conversing with loved ones with the help of stunning tablescapes, tea parties, and crystal chandeliers.

B.3oho Bohemian, boho chic, modern bohemian…this interior design style goes by many names and is wildly popular for good reason. This style is flowing, it’s effortless, and puts you at ease. When you walk into a boho home you notice layers of patterns, textures, and colors. This look is heavily influenced by 1970s design that incorporates natural elements and has a collected and curated feel to each room. If you don’t have passed-down

unique items your mom saved from her festival days you can still achieve this cool vibe in your home by adding a few key pieces. The 70s were super popular for macramé and statement woven wall hangings. The art of creating these pieces yourself has made a big comeback, but if crafts aren’t your specialty you can always hit up Etsy. Throw rugs are an excellent way to play with multitonal prints and make a big impact in a space. You can go vintage here or with a more updated version of the style.

Another way to bring the look into your home is through textured linens (think

throws, pillows, bed spreads, etc.). The more layers the better. Now, if you aren’t lucky enough to live out this dream, or even to live near the water, you can still bring that slice of vacation bliss to your home through coastal interior design elements.

Think lots of natural light beaming off white-washed floors. A soothing palette of whites and beiges with soft tones and touches of sea foam green and dreamy shades of blue popping up here and there. You want it to evoke a relaxing breezy feeling, like you are basking at the beach; even if you’re land locked.

Incorporating natural wood furniture in light stains, rope accessories, and wicker or rattan accent pieces is the perfect way to start amping up the coastal vibes in your space. rowing up, young girls have large expectations in life that range from what they are supposed to wear to how they are supposed to act. This puts a lot of pressure on girls and stops them from expressing themselves just so they can fit in.

Due to this, they face challenges with confidence, leadership, and growth. The Confidence Code for Girls states that the confidence levels of girls drop by 30% between the ages of 8 and 14. Being one of the most formative times of their lives, girls need the correct guidance and support to create a more successful future.

Haley Kilpatrick created a national nonprofit organization called Girl Talk that helps all girls develop confidence and leadership skills. Haley was inspired to start this organization because she wanted to help her younger sister through the difficult years of middle school. To create guidance for the younger girls, the organization’s program focuses on having high school girls mentor younger girls through the most developing times. What makes Girl Talk so unique is the welcoming environment.

The program is designed to help all girls become successful leaders. They teach a wide range of topics, including diversity and inclusion, body image, relationships, and digital citizenship. The girls also learn how to manage stress and deal with anxiety. The program also helps them learn the different styles, approaches, and characteristics of leadership and gives them the opportunity to apply these to activities.

Also, the peer-to-peer mentoring program helps the girls support one another and gives them the opportunity to learn new skills, find strength, and create a network of support. This helps the high school girls learn leadership skills while they lead weekly meetings and the middle school girls learn vital skills.

The first Girl Talk chapter began in 2002 and was in Albany, Georgia. Today, there are 485 chapters in 10 different countries.

In total, the organization has inspired an amazing 70,000 girls across the world. On their website, the nonprofit shows how change is possible. About 91% of the girls in their program agreed that they learned transferable leadership skills, 90% of girls agreed that they considered themselves leaders, and 93% agreed that they feel more confident about themselves.

When people donate to the organization, they can see the impact of each dollar. For example, if you donate $30, it helps sponsor a virtual summit attendee, and if you donate $100, it goes toward expanding the Girl Talk podcast platforms. Every dollar donated has a purpose and will be used to benefit young girls.

Having a program with girls of all ages working together to help each other grow is only the start to creating a better and more confident future for girls.

lright, we all know that feeling where we are tearing through our closet and nothing seems to spark our attention. We have places to be, but we are still standing in a towel staring at clothes that don’t match the vibes. It is the worst feeling! Basically, we have two options: prevent the problem before we find ourselves in this situation or learn how to work with what we have.

Preventing the problem starts with staying ahead of the style game. Fashion changes faster than we can keep up with half the time, but paying attention to the right sources can get you pretty far. The best part is that we have been paying attention so you don’t have to… all things knit are hitting the runways! So grab your keys and make sure you are hydrated, because it's time to go find that knitted sweater of your dreams.

Hold on, I know what you are thinking, “but I have no idea how to style something knitted!” That is okay! Let’s start with the easy one: an oversized knit sweater.

Knit sweaters are so cozy you could hang out in one all day. The easiest way to style an oversized knit sweater is to pair it with some of your favorite denim jeans.

(We won’t get into the skinny jean debacle because that's a whole other problem, any denim works!) The easiest styling trick is to tuck the bottom of the sweater into the front of your pants and let the rest hang down the back. It gives a more put together illusion while still keeping the comfort. The best part of adding jeans is that this look can be styled up for more of a professional attire, or it can be styled down for that casual day out with friends. If you are looking for a professional look, go with some elegant accessories, a leather bag, and your favorite heels. If you want the more casual look, throw your hair up in that cute messy bun, and slip on your comfy sneakers because you are ready for the day!

Another option is knit skirts. Now this one might be a stretch for some people, but these skirts are looking so cute, and we can’t wait to see more of them around town!

Grabbing things from the store that you love is the first step in preventing the problem of not having anything to wear!

If you didn’t have time to go shopping yet and you need something right now, chances are you have something in the back of your closet that will be perfect! The best part of fashions coming in and out of style is that you get to reuse clothes you have forgotten about. Y2K styles are coming back, and I am willing to bet there are leftover outfits you never wanted to toss. Now is the time to dig through your drawers and pull out those knitted cardigans, scarves, and sweaters you loved so much.

However, say you’re like me and you have monthly trips scheduled to the Goodwill to donate anything you don’t wear anymore and you don’t have those cute knit pieces anymore. Hey, now it is just another excuse to go back to the thrift store and see what other treasures you can find in those racks.

Keep an eye out for the chunky stuff and the things you can style in different ways with things you have at home. One woman’s trash is another woman’s treasure.

Now all you need is a little bit of confidence to wear something new. If you are not sure if two articles of clothing will look good together, just try it. Give yourself a fashion show! Sometimes the skirt won’t look like your style, but after strutting your stuff in the mirror, it turns out to be your favorite.

Whatever you are thinking, just try it on and pretend you are walking in New York fashion week. Chances are you just needed a little confidence boost.

How did you get interested in your occupation?

I am a Certified Public Accountant by trade. Because accounting is a very transferable skill, I’ve worked with government contractors who build bombs and modify military aircrafts, as an auditor at a public accounting firm, and for an airport. But after my second child, I decided I needed more flexibility in my work life and “went out on my own” by operating a real estate title closing agency with my husband. The entry into the solid waste industry was simply a strategy of diversification from the real estate market. One year in, we decided solid waste has diversification within itself and wanted to focus 100% of our time, money, and passion into our sanitation business. We sold our title agency and have been full steam ahead into trash ever since!

How long have you been practicing your trade?

I’ve been an accountant for 16 years, but I’ve owned a trash company for three and a half.

Tell us a little about your favorite part of the job you do.

I enjoy being different and standing out in our industry.

Garbage collection seems straightforward and almost … boring. But at Adams Sanitation, we enjoy putting “fun” into the job. We celebrate successes and jobs well done, we laugh at ourselves when we make bonehead mistakes (like spelling our core value wrong in vinyl on the side of a trash truck!), and we communicate with our customers in entertaining and informative ways. we do things that you wouldn’t necessarily expect from a garbage company, like sponsoring a podcast that brings small business owners and supporters together to discuss entrepreneurship, business challenges, and opportunities — simply exposing the community to small businesses.

end. We have a full-time accounting manager now and my role is more oversight and review, but my accounting background has been quite instrumental in owning and operating my own business. My degree and skills are just a tool in my tool box, but they don’t define what I can and cannot do.

Let us in on the least favorite part of your job.

How do you think diversity in the workplace helps shape our community?

Not getting the job done is not an option. In most industries, work can slide a day if circumstances come up that make the job hard to accomplish. But for garbage collection, short of a hurricane hit, there are no days we just can’t show up! The logistics of keeping trucks running and healthy workers on the road six days a week can be challenging, especially when we have equipment break down, a stormy day, or around holidays. It also makes planning team building events or meetings very hard since we only get off one day a week.

What empowers you as a woman in a typically male industry?

In my past roles as Controller or CFO, I worked for companies that provided a product or service that was mainly performed by a man — software engineers, water jet fabricators, painters, aircraft mechanics, fuelers, and instructors — and I always showed interest in their work.

I don’t want to be treated like “oh, here comes the bean counter.” Because I took time to observe their work and ask questions, I always received respect, and trash is no different. I recently did a ride-along with one of our Santa Rosa County crews. They thought I was going to do just that, “ride along,” but I had on my steel-toe boots, and I was there to work! I cannot be afraid or grossed out by a job that I am asking people to do. I also took time to understand their job — the challenges and things as an employer we can do to make their job easier and more rewarding. Male or female, as business owners we can’t get caught up in the weeds of business management and forget about the fundamental service or product that actually makes our business possible. Get involved, take interest, and show respect.

What advice do you have for other women interested in your trade?

In college, opportunities other than working for a public accounting firm weren’t really presented. I quickly learned that billable hour budgets and stuffy business suits weren’t for me. That’s the image of an accountant, especially for a woman, but my accounting degree was a means to an

Having a business workforce that is a representation of the community it serves means we better understand our customers’ needs. We want to be a part of a community that appreciates its natural resources, is a friend to those in need, works hard to earn its keep, and is open-minded to listen and appreciate other perspectives.

Since you’ve started, have you noticed a change in your industry when it comes to opportunities for women?

When we expanded our service territory and needed to hire many employees in a short period of time, we held a job fair. We had a few women there not for the office positions, but for the field positions. Not only did they want to be in the field, they were qualified. Several months down the road, we have a workforce that is 41% female. In fact, we have two crews that are female — driver and jumper (employee who “jumps” off the back of the truck to get the trash from the cart). It surprises customers when they see their trash being handled by a woman, and it makes us proud to provide opportunity to everyone who wants to be in the sanitation industry.

If you like being on the move and being outside doing important work, it’s a great job.

Words you live by…

“It is the sweet, simple things of life which are the real ones after all.” — Laura Ingalls Wilder. Owning a business is a big part of my life and doing it alongside my husband means we are in work mode much of the time. And I’m quite goal driven. This sometimes gets me out of balance with being a good mom, wife, daughter, sister, and friend.

This quote reminds me to slow down, be patient, and enjoy the process. Life is short and if I’m always looking forward to the next accomplishment, I will miss the journey, both professionally and personally.
