Pure excitement. And while the setting was romantic enough on its own, the details behind the scenes made the moment even more meaningful.

Can’t Help Falling in Love
If there’s one thing I’ve learned from putting together a wedding issue, it’s that there is no single way to get to “I do.” Some couples plan every detail down to the last rose petal. Others are perfectly happy letting the day unfold as it comes. Some are counting down the days until the wedding, while others are still figuring out who should (or shouldn’t!) be sitting next to each other at dinner. Wherever you are on that spectrum, welcome to our Wedding issue! We’re kicking things off with a beautiful bride who knows a thing or two about styling the perfect ensemble: Octavia, our cover model. Her story is a wonderful reminder that every woman brings her own personality, style, and story to the things she celebrates — including love. And speaking of celebrations, we have a surprise proposal! There’s something about watching someone realize, “Wait… is this actually happening?” that gets me every time. We’re sharing the story behind one couple’s big surprise, giving you a peek into the unforgettable moment when the question was finally popped. If you’re already deep in wedding planning, we’ve packed this issue with plenty of help, babe! Our wedding day tips are here to help you think beyond the dress, the flowers, and the seating chart and prepare for the little things that can make a big difference once the big day arrives like Own the Aisle on (pg33). photo by: Shanna Star Because while Pinterest may have convinced us that weddings are supposed to be flawless, anyone who has actually planned one knows that something, somewhere, will probably go slightly sideways. The trick is to enjoy it anyway. And just remember, the magic is always in the in-between moments when something unplanned happens! The best weddings are the ones that feel like the people at the center of them — not a carefully assembled collection of traditions someone else decided you needed. That’s really what I hope you take away from this issue. Whether you’re planning a wedding, dreaming about one, newly engaged, happily dating, or simply here for the gorgeous photos and love stories, there’s plenty to enjoy. Love comes with plenty of versions, and there’s room for all of them! So grab a cozy drink, settle in, and enjoy the romance, the beautiful details, the helpful advice, and maybe a little reminder that when it comes to love, there really is no one-size-fits-all. At Scarlett, we love bringing you the latest in women’s fashion, beauty, home decor, lifestyle, and health. Thank you all so much for the support as we continue our sixth year of Scarlett. Enjoy this issue and connect with us on social media on Facebook: Scarlett Magazine and Instagram: @scarlett.magazine. Because frankly, we know you give a damn.

ctavia James and Jerel Williams-Foster's love story began with a simple visit to her Pensacola, Florida, home — Jerel came by for work, and in that brief, unplanned moment, something sparked. "I thought he was cute," Octavia remembers, though she never imagined their paths would cross again. But fate had other ideas. A chance encounter downtown brought them back together, and from there, everything changed. Three years of dating later, Jerel proposed in the comfort of their own home one October evening — no elaborate scavenger hunt, no flash mob, just the two of them and a moment Octavia calls completely unexpected. "I was caught way off guard," she laughs. A little over a year of engagement bliss followed, all leading to their November 1, 2025, wedding at Rodger's Ranch in Saraland, Alabama. If the wedding felt like something out of a lifelong daydream, that's because it was. Octavia pulled inspiration
from a Pinterest board she'd been curating for years, blended with the energy of her own family reunions — which she proudly describes as "ICONIC." The result was a striking black-and-white affair, classic and elegant, with the reception tucked right inside the same venue so the celebration never had to skip a beat. The day was a family affair in every sense. Octavia's cousin did her hair, another cousin — a "retired" florist who came out of retirement for the occasion — handled the flowers with help from Octavia's mom, aunts, and nephew. One of Octavia's bridesmaids, a professional wedding makeup artist, made sure the bride glowed from the aisle to the dance floor. And perhaps the sweetest detail of all: Octavia's father walked her down the aisle and officiated the ceremony himself. Her gown came from Impression Bridal in Kennesaw, while Jerel suited up courtesy of Gents

Formal Wear in Pensacola. And no Southern wedding is complete without cake — a strawberry showstopper baked by Melissa Rocker that guests are still talking about. Both Octavia and Jerel wrote their own vows, though Octavia confesses it was the most nerve-wracking part of the entire day. Nerves aside, hearing Jerel's words turned out to be her favorite moment of the wedding. "I was shocked he wrote them," she says — proof that even the quietest hearts can surprise you when it counts. The bridal party wasn't chosen on a whim, either. Octavia's girls have had her back for over a decade — the kind of friends you know will show up, no matter what. And when it came to popping the L-word first, Octavia owns it fully: "I hate to admit I can be a lover girl." Their song, a duet by Avant and Tamia, became the soundtrack to their first dance as husband and wife. Not every wedding day arrives without heartache. Octavia's grandmother passed just two 17
months before the big day, and her presence was felt everywhere — from mementos woven throughout the celebration to a memory wall, built by Octavia's best friends, filled with photos of loved ones who couldn't be there in person. Purple accents wove through the florals in honor of Jerel's mother, who has always loved the color. Octavia's advice to brides walking this same road? "Have fun. Pick your bridesmaids wisely. And make sure you spend time enjoying your husband." Simple, heartfelt words from a bride who found love in the most unexpected way — and built a marriage on family, faith, and a whole lot of joy. www.ScarlettMag.com

ot all heroes wear capes, some wear fabulous heels. Being a woman can be a difficult job. We are often expected to be everything to everyone. Work hard to reach your full potential in your career field, but also raise a family inbetween. Make sure you meet all of your deadlines at work but also bake a casserole and join a book club. While it may seem overwhelming to “do it all,” there are a few local women who seem to have it figured out. And, for that, they are my heroes; or should I say heroines. Malala Fund said, “I want every girl to know that her voice can change the world.” This group of women are bravely climbing to the top and making a difference in the lives of those around them. In these articles, we are raising a glass to some amazing women along the Gulf Coast. As successful businesswomen and entrepreneurs, these women are the examples that we need for our youth. Some are mothers, some are bosses, some are adventurous, some lead quietly from the sidelines, but there is one thing they all have in common — they are heroines. The leaders, the path blazers, the extraordinary women that always go a step above the rest. A heroine is defined as a woman admired or idealized for her courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. These fearless women are that and more. 25

here’s a certain kind of magic in helping someone find the dress that makes them stand a little taller, smile a little bigger, and see themselves in a whole new way. For Leigh Green, that magic has become both a career and a calling. As the owner of Bridal Suite and Twilight Prom & Pageant, Leigh has spent years helping Pensacola women and girls find the perfect look for life’s biggest moments — and, hopefully, leave feeling a little more confident than when they arrived. Born in Flowood, Mississippi, Leigh has called Pensacola home since she was 4 years old. With four generations of family roots in the area, she proudly considers herself a “4th generation Pensacola girlie,” making her connection to the community about as personal as it gets. Her philosophy on life is refreshingly simple: keep moving forward. Giving up on herself was never an option, and she approaches each day with the goal of making today better than yesterday. Sometimes that means tackling a major goal, and sometimes it means something as ordinary as cleaning out a cabinet or finally finishing the paperwork that has been sitting on the to-do list. For Leigh, progress is progress — and standing still simply isn’t her style. That forward momentum has shaped her business too. Leigh loves being part of the milestones that mark a young woman’s journey, from saying yes to a prom dress or homecoming gown to finding the perfect bridesmaid or wedding dress. And she hopes to someday dress those same women again when they return for a mother-of-the-bride look. “What an honor it has been for me to dress Pensacola’s next generation of women for all their most important life events,” she says. But beneath the sparkle and sequins is a mom whose proudest accomplishment has nothing to do with business. Leigh is a mother of three, and watching her children grow into adults with good hearts and strong moral compasses is what makes her “mamma heart swell.” It’s a role she clearly takes as seriously as any other goal she sets. That doesn’t mean her life is all dresses and glitter. Leigh’s version of mom life also includes dirt, motocross tracks and cheering from the sidelines. Her son races motocross and is working toward his own goal of going professional. After watching him race on television, Leigh says she gained an even deeper appreciation for both her son’s passion and the demanding sport. Whether she’s a cheer mom or a moto mom, she’s clearly happiest in the role of biggest fan. Leigh’s own biggest female influence is another woman who knows a thing or two about staying true to yourself: Dolly Parton. Sharing a birthday with the legendary entertainer, Leigh admires Dolly’s work ethic, self-love and ability to build a multigenerational legacy. From children’s literacy to theme parks and plenty of sparkle, Dolly’s determination to keep dreaming and leveling up resonates deeply with Leigh. That same message of self-worth is at the heart of what Leigh hopes to give back. During COVID, when proms were canceled, Twilight Prom & Pageant created a community
prom for students who had missed theirs. Graduates and current students from schools across the area came together for an unforgettable night, proving just how meaningful it can be to create a moment of celebration when one has been taken away. Today, Leigh’s goal remains bigger than selling dresses. She wants every customer — especially young women — to walk out of her shop feeling more confident than when they walked in. Her greatest reward is hearing a customer say she made them feel beautiful or special. And she’s not finished yet. Leigh dreams of doubling the size of Bridal Suite and Twilight Prom & Pageant so she can double the number of women and girls she reaches. Because, in her words, “women uplifting women shouldn’t be rare. It should be shared.” And Leigh intends to keep spreading that message — one dress, one milestone and one confidence boost at a time.

The Skin Prep Countdown
You Actually Need written by: Emily Jones
T
here’s a moment in every wedding planning timeline where the spreadsheets are color-coded, the dress is almost finalized, the group chat is mildly unhinged — and suddenly someone says, “Okay but… what are you doing for your skin?” And just like that, the bride-to-be goes from calm, collected visionary to a woman standing in Sephora at 8:47 p.m. asking if she needs a resurfacing peel or just a personality change. Let’s simplify this. Glowing wedding skin is not about panic-buying everything with the word “radiance” on the label. It’s about timing, consistency, and resisting the very strong urge to try twelve new things the week before your wedding. Think of this as your skin prep countdown … the one you actually need, not the one social media is trying to sell you at 2 a.m. Three months out is where the real relationship with your skin begins. Not the dramatic kind — the committed kind. This is when you focus on consistency over chaos. A gentle cleanser you actually like using. A moisturizer that doesn’t make your face feel like a science experiment. If you’re doing facials or seeing a professional, now is the time to start — slowly. The goal here isn’t transformation overnight; it’s teaching your skin that it can relax because you finally have your life together (or at least your skincare routine). Around the six to eight week mark, things get a little more intentional. This is refinement season. You’re addressing texture, hydration, maybe a breakout pattern that likes to show up uninvited like a plus-one with no RSVP. Treatments should still be predictable, not experimental. Your skin should be calm, not confused. If you’re introducing anything new, it should already feel like it belongs in your routine, not something you found on a “Get Glass Skin Fast” video.
29
At this stage, people love to overcorrect. Don’t. Your skin is not a project that needs more urgency; it needs less chaos. Two to four weeks out is where discipline becomes your best friend. This is maintenance mode. No new serums. No surprise exfoliating pads that promise to “reveal your inner glow.” Your inner glow is fine. It’s already there. Now you’re just protecting it. This is also when sleep starts to matter in a very real, very visible way. Hydration becomes non-negotiable. And if you’re stressed, your skin will absolutely file a complaint. So the goal is simple: keep everything steady, predictable, and boring in the best possible way. Then comes the final week — the most emotionally charged skincare week of your life. This is not the time for ambition. This is the time for preservation. You’re not trying to improve your skin; you’re trying to keep it from staging a protest. Think soothing masks, gentle hydration, maybe a facial massage if you’re into that kind of thing. Ice rollers? Fine. A calming sheet mask? Yes. A new acid you saw recommended by a stranger on the internet? Absolutely not. Three days before the wedding, your skincare routine should feel almost invisible. At this point, your glow is less about what you’re doing and more about what you’ve already done. Your job is to stay hydrated, stay rested, and stay far away from anything that starts with “detox.” Because here’s the truth no one puts on a Pinterest board: bridal skin isn’t built in a weekend. It’s built in the quiet, repetitive choices you made weeks ago when no one was watching and you didn’t feel like doing the whole routine — but did it anyway. And when you finally step into that day, veil on, camera ready, skin calm and luminous — not perfect, just steady — you won’t be thinking about serums or schedules. You’ll just be thinking: good thing I didn’t panic. www.ScarlettMag.com

ho decided every bride has to glide slowly down the aisle to the same handful of songs while everyone politely dabs their eyes? If that’s your dream, absolutely own it. But if you’ve ever imagined dancing your way to “I do,” making your grand entrance to your favorite movie soundtrack, or high-fiving your bridal party on the way to the altar, consider this your official permission slip. Your wedding isn’t a reenactment. It’s a celebration. And your walk down the aisle should feel like the opening scene to your story. Hit Play on Your Song There’s no rule that says your aisle song has to be classical or even instrumental. Maybe it’s an acoustic version of the song you and your fiancé scream-sing on road trips. Maybe it’s a soulful ballad, a country favorite, a Disney tune, or an unexpected indie track that instantly transports you back to your first date. The best choice isn’t the one that’s trending on social media — it’s the one that gives you goosebumps. Dance Like Everybody’s Watching Hear me out. Not a choreographed flash mob (unless that’s your thing), but what if you actually smiled, swayed, twirled your bouquet, or walked with a little extra swagger instead of concentrating on taking tiny, perfect steps? Joy is contagious. When your guests see you genuinely having fun, they relax too. Suddenly, your ceremony feels less like a formal production and more like the celebration everyone came to enjoy. Make It an Entrance Who says you have to appear from the back of the venue? Picture arriving by vintage convertible, boat, horseback, golf cart, trolley, or even walking in together with your partner. Maybe your dog proudly escorts you. Maybe your nieces and nephews lead an impromptu dance parade. Maybe your bridal party enters to different songs that perfectly match each personality. Unexpected doesn’t mean over-the-top. It just means unforgettable.
www.ScarlettMag.com
Break the “Rules” Escort yourself if that feels right. Walk with both parents. Walk with your grandmother. Walk with your children. Walk with your best friend. Walk alone because you’ve built a life you’re proud of before saying “I do.” There are no bonus points for tradition if it doesn’t reflect your story. Give Guests a Moment They’ll Never Forget Imagine everyone expecting the familiar wedding march when suddenly your favorite upbeat song begins to play. Smiles spread. A few guests start clapping. Someone laughs. The energy instantly shifts from “formal ceremony” to “best day ever.” Those are the moments people talk about for years. Not because they were extravagant — but because they felt authentically you. The Only Rule That Matters Whether you’re making a dramatic entrance under a canopy of flowers, dancing down the aisle with your bridal party, or quietly soaking in every step to a song that’s been “yours” since the beginning, don’t worry about what weddings are supposed to look like. This is your moment. Walk slowly. Walk confidently. Dance if the music moves you. Laugh if your nerves kick in. Wave at your grandparents. Blow your partner a kiss. Cry before you even reach the front. Own every step. Because when the doors open and all eyes turn toward you, they’re not waiting for perfection. They’re waiting to see you. 33

Bar
Coffee written by: Colleen Gillespie
T
here’s something undeniably chic about walking into a wedding reception and being greeted by a full coffee bar instead of the usual predictable punch bowl situation. It feels intentional. Curated. Like the couple thought, “Yes, we love romance — but we also respect caffeine.” A coffee bar instantly turns your cocktail hour or late-night reception moment into a cozy little experience guests actually remember. It’s part hospitality, part personality, and fully a vibe. Think of it as your reception’s unofficial “pause and reset” station. After hours of dancing, mingling, crying during speeches, and pretending you didn’t just sweat through your dress, a perfectly crafted latte suddenly feels like the greatest wedding favor of all time. And the best part? A coffee bar can be tailored entirely to match your love story, your aesthetic, and your guest list’s caffeine dependency levels. Start with a signature menu that feels like you, not just a standard café order sheet. For espresso lovers, offer the classics that never miss: cappuccinos, lattes, Americanos, and rich double espressos for the guests who showed up ready to dance until 1 a.m. Add one or two “house specialties” that feel wedding-worthy … think vanilla bean lattes, caramel sea salt cold foam cold brews, or a cinnamon brown sugar latte that tastes like the dessert table decided to get involved in the beverage program. If you want to be a little playful, rename everything. Weddings are basically the one day where you can call a latte something dramatic and no one questions it. A few naming ideas to set the tone: “First Kiss Latte” – vanilla latte with whipped cream “Forever Brew” – classic hot coffee or Americano “Something Blue Brew” – iced lavender latte “Till Death Cold Brew” – strong cold brew with sweet cream “Better Together Mocha” – chocolate mocha with extra foam “Blushing Bride Brew” – strawberry cold foam cold brew 37
Suddenly your coffee order feels like part of the love story instead of just a caffeine delivery system. Now let’s talk caffeine control, because not everyone at a wedding wants to be wide awake at 11:30 p.m. when the DJ decides it’s time for early 2000s throwbacks. Your caffeine lineup should be intentional: • Full caf espresso and drip coffee for the dancers, the extroverts, and the uncle who refuses to sit down • Half-caf options for guests who want the vibe without the jitters • Decaf espresso so no one feels left out of the latte art moment • Cold brew (regular and decaf if you’re feeling extra considerate) for guests who want something smooth and low-acid
And yes, decaf deserves respect here. A well-made decaf latte at a wedding is not a consolation prize. It’s a kindness. It’s saying, “We want you here past dinner and still sleeping tonight.” To elevate the experience even more, build in a few finishing touches that make the coffee bar feel less like a station and more like an event within the event. Offer syrups in glass bottles: vanilla, hazelnut, caramel, lavender. Add oat milk, almond milk, and whole milk so everyone has options without having to announce dietary preferences like they’re giving a speech. Top it off with cinnamon shakers, cocoa dusting, and maybe even a little edible glitter if your wedding leans more “romantic sparkle” than “minimalist beige.” And don’t underestimate presentation. A simple chalkboard menu, custom acrylic signage, or a vintageinspired café setup can transform the coffee bar into one of the most photographed corners of your reception. Guests will absolutely post it. Possibly more than the cake. Because here’s the truth: a wedding coffee bar isn’t just about caffeine. It’s about care. It’s that small, thoughtful moment that says your celebration isn’t just beautiful — it’s lived in, generous, and aware that love stories sometimes run on espresso and a second wind. And honestly? That’s the kind of energy every reception deserves.

The Elevated Experience of ARTistic Catering written by: Emily Jones photography submitted by: Artistic Catering
F
or Chef Thomas “Tommy” Lemasters, the road to becoming one of Destin’s most celebrated culinary talents started at 6 years old, scraping refried beans off plates in his stepfather’s Mexican restaurant. It wasn’t glamorous, but it was formative. “I was drawn to the energy of the kitchen and the way food brought people together,” Tommy recalls. That early pull never let go, and it’s the same energy that now powers Artistic Catering, the Destin-based company he acquired in 2020 and has since transformed into one of the region’s premier names for weddings and high-end private events. Tommy’s path wound through some of the Emerald Coast’s most respected kitchens — Jackacuda’s, Brotula’s, Dock on the Island, and Marina Café — each one sharpening his technique and raising his expectations of himself. “Each one shaped my standards and approach,” he says. By the time he was ready to build something of his own, he knew exactly what he wanted: an elevated, personal, experience-driven catering company rooted in the community that raised him. Artistic Catering, with more than 20 years of history originally founded by Chester of Fudpucker’s, was the perfect foundation to build on. Being named “Best Chef in Destin” didn’t change Tommy’s philosophy so much as sharpen it. “It raised the standard,” he says. “Every event has to feel like a championship performance — consistent, detailed, and executed at a high level from start to finish.” That mindset traces back to a defining moment at Brotula’s, where he developed the “Hook & Cook” experience, transforming a guest’s fresh catch into a refined, restaurant-quality meal. “Turning someone’s catch into a refined meal showed me how powerful food becomes when it’s personal — and that’s carried into everything we do today.” That personal touch is the heart of what sets Artistic Catering apart. Tommy defines a high-end culinary experience as one built on execution, flow, and detail, not just quality ingredients. “What sets us apart is delivering refined technique with bold, approachable flavors that still feel real and satisfying.” For clients, that means no cookiecutter menus. “Every event is built around the client … their vision, their guests, and the experience they want to create. Nothing feels templated.” Living on the Gulf Coast shapes everything on the menu. Fresh seafood and Southern influence form the foundation, 39
layered with global inspiration and elevated coastal dishes that guests remember long after the last course. But Tommy is quick to point out that the food is only part of the story. “What people remember most is how the entire experience feels, from start to finish.” That seamless feel doesn’t happen by accident; it’s the product of meticulous preparation and communication well before a single plate is set. It’s also the product of an exceptional team. With over 150 years of combined experience behind them, Tommy’s staff bring a level of confidence and precision that shows up in every detail, from prep to plating. It’s a culture, not just a job description … and it’s part of why weddings and private events remain his favorite to work. “There’s a level of meaning and emotion that makes them special,” he says. The most memorable ones are those where everything aligns: the food, the energy, the people. “You can feel it in the room.” None of it would have been possible without the Destin community. “Their support and trust have allowed us to grow and keep pushing forward,” Tommy says. Looking ahead, Artistic Catering plans to keep elevating the experience, expand its high-end offerings, and build systems that allow the company to grow without ever compromising quality. As Tommy puts it simply: “We’re focused on creating experiences people remember — every time.” Planning your wedding or next big event? Let Chef Tommy Lemasters and the Artistic Catering team bring championship-level execution and Gulf Coast-inspired flavor to your celebration. Contact Artistic Catering in Destin, Florida, today to start building a menu — and a memory — your guests will be talking about for years to come.

Thrifting
for Special Touches written by: Jessica Graña

here’s something about a wedding that makes everyone suddenly believe they need a $12,000 floral wall and napkins monogrammed in a font they’ll never use again. But here’s the secret nobody tells you until after the stress kicks in: the most memorable weddings aren’t the most expensive ones — they’re the most intentional ones. And that’s exactly where thrifted details step in and steal the show. Because “thrifted” doesn’t mean “lastminute and random.” It means layered, collected, and personal in a way no massproduced décor package can ever replicate. It means your wedding looks like you, not a Pinterest board that went through a corporate approval process. Start with the pieces that set the tone. Vintage frames, mismatched in size and finish, can become signage for everything from seating charts to signature drinks. A little gold, a little worn wood, maybe even a chipped corner or two — that’s character, not damage. Prop them up on easels, hang them from garden hooks, lean them casually on a bar setup. Suddenly, your “information station” feels like an art installation instead of a checklist. Then there’s glassware, the underrated hero of thrifted weddings. Forget uniform everything. Mix etched goblets, colored coupe glasses, and simple vintage tumblers. When the light hits them during golden hour, it won’t matter that they didn’t come in matching sets. It will matter that they sparkle like they’ve already lived a story or two before your guests ever raised a toast. And let’s talk tables, because this is where thrifted magic really shows off. Instead of identical centerpieces marching down every table like they’re on duty, build variations. A cluster of old books
www.ScarlettMag.com
topped with a single bloom. Brass candlesticks that don’t match but absolutely belong together anyway. Small ceramic bowls filled with citrus, herbs, or even handwritten notes for guests to discover. Nothing screams “effortless romance” like something that clearly took time to gather, not time to order. Linens? They don’t all have to match either. Layer lace over linen, linen over cotton, cotton over something you found folded in a bin that you weren’t even sure was meant to be a tablecloth. The goal isn’t perfection, it’s texture. Weddings are one of the few places where “a little uneven” reads as charm instead of chaos. Now, if you’re planning a small intimate wedding, you might have a unique opportunity to make a special moment out of one of the most overlooked thrifted touches … seating. Not every chair has to match, and honestly, it’s better if they don’t. Wooden chairs, bentwood styles, maybe even a velvet settee pulled from a corner booth of a vintage shop. It all creates that feeling of a space that was curated, not rented in bulk. Your guests will remember where they sat because it felt like part of the story, not just logistics. And if your big day is too big to grab custom seating for every guest, you can still use the
same idea for the bride and groom, the wedding party, or to create a unique photo opp for guests to enjoy. And then there are the tiny things. The things guests don’t expect to notice but somehow always do. A vintage tray holding the rings before the ceremony. Old teacups repurposed as escort card holders. A hand mirror at the entrance so guests can check themselves before walking into the celebration like they’re stepping into a moment that matters. The beauty of thrifted wedding details is that they carry history without demanding explanation. That candlestick might have once lived on someone’s grandmother’s dining table. That lace runner might have already seen fifty Sunday dinners. And now, they’re part of your story too — folded into a new beginning without losing where they came from. So if you’re standing in the middle of planning, overwhelmed by options that all start to blur together, step away from the catalog pages and into the imperfect aisle of a thrift store. Look for the things that make you pause. The slightly chipped vase. The brass frame that doesn’t quite match anything else you own. The glassware that catches the light just a little differently. Those are your special touches. Not because they’re perfect, but because they’re yours.

fter 10 months of dating, Jordan had no idea that Jacob was quietly planning one of the biggest moments of their lives. In the weeks leading up to the proposal, Jacob kept planning elaborate date nights — and even surprised Jordan with a beautiful dress for “no particular reason.” It was a clever strategy: keep her guessing, keep the romance coming, and make sure she never suspected that one of those dates might end with a ring. Then came Pensacola Beach. With the Gulf as their backdrop, Jacob finally revealed what all those mysterious plans had really been leading to. Jordan’s reaction? Pure excitement. And while the setting was romantic enough on its own, the details behind the scenes made the moment even more meaningful. Jacob had managed to incorporate an heirloom stone from his grandmother into Jordan’s engagement ring. As fate would have it, his grandmother and Jordan shared the same dream stone, and the heirloom turned out to be the perfect cut and size. Talk about a family connection that was meant to be. He also made sure Jordan’s best friends were part of the planning, even though they couldn’t physically be there for the proposal. So while Jordan may have thought it was just the two of them enjoying a day at the beach, she was actually surrounded by a whole lot of love from near and far. Jacob thought through every detail, and for Jordan, the result was better than she could have imagined. “He did amazing!” she says. “He thought of every single detail, and I couldn’t have pictured a better way to start the rest of our lives together.” Now engaged and looking ahead to their September 2027 wedding, Jordan and Jacob have already begun their next chapter — one that started with a beach, an heirloom ring, and a beautifully unexpected “yes.” 47

Merging Two Homes
Into One written by: Colleen Gillespie
51
| Nesting
T
here’s a moment in every wedding story that doesn’t make it into the photos. It’s not the proposal, not the dress fitting, not even the walk down the aisle. It’s the quiet chaos that comes after (or before, we’re not judging!) the “I do’s,” when two front doors, two coffee makers, two sets of sheets, and approximately 47 nearly identical mugs all collide under one roof. Merging two homes into one sounds romantic in theory, like blending playlists and lighting a candle together while laughing over takeout on a new couch you picked out as a team. In reality, it’s also deciding whose blender makes the cut, why both of you own three screwdrivers but somehow no matching plates, and what to do with the framed poster of a band only one of you still pretends to like. This is where nesting becomes less about décor and more about diplomacy. The first rule of merging homes: don’t rush the purge. Everyone wants to show up to the shared space ready to “combine lives,” but the truth is, you don’t know what you need until you’ve lived without it for a minute. That second coffee pot? Might be unnecessary. That oddly specific kitchen gadget you forgot you owned? Maybe it becomes your new favorite thing. Give yourselves time to live in the overlap before deciding everything must be perfectly edited on day one. Then there’s the emotional inventory nobody warns you about. Objects are never just objects. They are receipts of who you were before you became a “we.” The chipped mug from college, the throw blanket that’s been through three apartments, the chair that only looks good if you don’t sit in it too long. Suddenly, you’re not just combining homes — you’re combining histories. And the goal isn’t to erase either one. It’s to make space for both without turning your living room into a museum of past lives. Of course, space itself becomes the great negotiator. Closets reveal truths faster than any conversation ever could. Someone always has more hangers, more shoes, or more emotional attachment to the idea of “organized chaos.” This is where compromise shows up wearing sweatpants. Maybe one person gets the top shelf, maybe the other claims the drawer that actually closes all the way. The real win isn’t symmetry, it’s functionality you can both live with without silently resenting each other at 7 a.m. And then comes the surprisingly tender part: building something neither of you had before. A shared coffee station that becomes a morning ritual. A couch that slowly collects both of your favorite blankets. A kitchen where recipes get rewritten in real time because one of you always forgets an ingredient and the other one improvises like it’s a personality trait. These aren’t just design choices, they’re the beginning of your shared rhythm. But here’s the secret nobody says out loud: merging homes isn’t about getting it right immediately. It’s about allowing it to stay a little unfinished for a while. The best shared spaces don’t arrive fully styled like a showroom. They evolve. They collect stories. They absorb arguments and laughter and late-night reorganizing sessions that start with “this will only take five minutes” and end three hours later with a completely new living room layout. Eventually, you stop noticing where one person’s life ended and the other’s began. The mugs multiply into a mutual collection. The furniture stops belonging to “mine” or “yours” and becomes simply “ours.” And somewhere between the last donation run and the first shared holiday decoration, you realize the merging wasn’t just about homes at all. It was about learning how to build a space that doesn’t erase who you were — but makes room for who you’re becoming together. www.ScarlettMag.com

Wedding Menu
here’s a reason Northwest Florida has become such a sought-after place to say “I do.” From Pensacola’s historic charm to Destin’s waterfront resorts and the sugarwhite beaches stretching east toward South Walton, we have the kind of backdrop people travel hundreds of miles to find. And then there’s 30A, the crème de la crème of coastal weddings, where places like Seaside, WaterColor and Rosemary Beach can make an entire wedding weekend look straight out of a magazine. But as a foodie, I’m going to argue that what happens on the plate deserves just as much attention as the flowers and the view. Because some of the best wedding memories don’t necessarily happen during the reception. They happen while making pasta with your girlfriends two nights before. Over cocktails served from a gorgeous mobile bar. Around a table at the rehearsal dinner. Or the next morning, when the heels are off, the formalities are over and your closest family and friends are gathered around the Airbnb talking about everything that happened the night before. That’s where a few of my favorite Northwest Florida food and drink pros really shine. If you’ve seen one of Tipsy Mule Mobile Bar’s setups, you already know this isn’t your basic folding-table bar situation. Owner Eliana Ciao creates beautiful mobile bar displays that become part of the look of an event while bringing craft cocktails and hospitality to weddings and celebrations across the Emerald Coast. But one of my favorite things Eliana offers doesn’t involve a bar at all. Italian by heritage, she also hosts hands-on pasta-making workshops where groups learn to make fresh pasta from scratch. Eliana offers the experience for gatherings including bachelorette parties, and honestly, give me this over matching T-shirts and another crowded bar crawl any day. For Eliana, both experiences come back to the same thing: hospitality. “Whether you’re rolling up your sleeves for a hands-on pasta-making class or sipping beautifully crafted cocktails at one of our stylish mobile bars, every experience I create is rooted in one thing: hospitality.” She describes wanting guests to feel as though they’ve pulled up a chair at her family’s table in Italy. “For me, it’s never just about the pasta or the perfect cocktail; it’s about bringing people together, sharing stories, laughing, learning, and creating the kind of memories that linger long after the last sip and the last bite.” And isn’t that exactly what you want people to remember about a wedding weekend? When we think “wedding caterer,” our minds naturally go straight to the reception. But Ate Dee’s Kitchen is a perfect example of why couples should think beyond that one meal. Chef Dee offers catering and private-chef experiences throughout Northwest Florida, including Pensacola Beach, Navarre Beach, Destin, 30A and Panama City Beach, with everything from weddings and beachfront dinners to smaller private celebrations. I’ve experienced Chef Dee’s cooking personally when she came into our home, but one of my favorite recommendations actually came from a family friend. Following her daughter’s wedding, their closest friends and family were staying together at an Airbnb and wanted something intimate the next morning. They brought in Chef Dee to prepare brunch for everyone. She absolutely raved 55
| 850 Foodie about it. In fact, she told me the food was even better than what they’d had at the wedding reception. That story stuck with me because that is the kind of detail couples can easily overlook. After months of planning one big night, there is something special about waking up the next morning with the people closest to you and sharing one more meal before everyone heads home. No seating chart. No timeline. No rushing to the next dance or speech. Just good food and the people you love. Chef Dee’s philosophy fits that idea perfectly: “A memorable wedding menu isn’t about following what’s popular — it’s about creating an experience that feels authentic. When every course has intention, guests leave remembering not just what they ate, but how it made them feel.” Maybe the most memorable meal of your wedding weekend isn’t the reception dinner after all. Then there are the places where the setting becomes part of the experience, and Brother Fox is one of my favorites. Tucked inside Pensacola’s Lily Hall, a boutique hotel housed in a beautifully reimagined historic building, Brother Fox feels made for the kind of rehearsal dinner or intimate reception where you want your guests to walk in and immediately know they’re somewhere special. The Spanish-inspired restaurant centers its menu around live-fire cooking, led by Chef Darian Hernandez. I’ve enjoyed quite a few dishes here, but the carne asada and seafood paella are exquisite. It’s exactly the type of communal, shareable food that makes sense for a celebration. Brother Fox hasn’t exactly gone unnoticed nationally, either. In 2024, it was selected as one of USA TODAY’s Restaurants of the Year, one of just 47 restaurants chosen nationwide. What makes the property especially interesting for a wedding weekend is that dinner doesn’t necessarily have to be the end of the night. Guests can stay at Lily Hall, dine at Brother Fox and then head downstairs to Sister Hen, the property’s intimate speakeasy-style cocktail bar. It’s an entire evening wrapped into one location and a side of Pensacola that destination-wedding guests may never have expected. Wedding food trends will come and go. Grazing tables will evolve, signature cocktails will change, and there will always be another dessert having its moment on social media. But maybe the best wedding menu isn’t the trendiest one. Maybe it’s handmade pasta with your best friends. Your grandmother’s recipe incorporated into dinner. A cocktail created just for the two of you. Paella passed around a table the night before the wedding. Or pancakes and mimosas at an Airbnb the morning after. The common thread among the people who do this well isn’t simply great food — it’s hospitality. And when you’re bringing your favorite people together, sometimes from hundreds of miles away, to celebrate one of the biggest moments of your life, that’s what makes a wedding feel personal. Not just what your guests ate, but how it made them feel. www.ScarlettMag.com

Jill Hubbs CEO, Emerald Coast PBS Pensacola, FL
You’ve dedicated your career to public media and education in this community. What first inspired you to pursue this work, and how has that motivation evolved over the years? I actually began my career in the classroom. Education was my first love, and I believed then — as I still believe today — that a great teacher can completely change the trajectory of a child’s life. When I came to public television in 1996 as the Education & Outreach Director, I realized how television could be utilized as a classroom without walls. Instead of reaching the children sitting in front of me in one classroom, public media gave me the opportunity to reach thousands of children, parents and teachers throughout our community. Over the next 30 years, I had the privilege of working on educational programs and literacy initiatives such as PBS Ready To Learn and PBS LearningMedia as well as teacher professional development workshops, family engagement programs, STEM education workshops and countless community events. I watched children light up with joy as they met a beloved PBS KIDS character. I watched teachers discover resources that greatly enhanced the curriculum in their classrooms. I watched parents embrace PBS programs their children love that also help prepare them for school. But my definition of education also grew over the years. Education isn’t something that ends when we graduate. Public television serves people throughout their entire lives. Some of the work closest to my heart has involved veterans and preserving our community’s history — projects such as the Veterans History Project, Honor Flight: A Journey of Heroes, They Were Our Fathers, War Stories, and our Reading of the Names at Veterans Memorial Park. So what began as a career in education ultimately became a career of service. And that is still what motivates me today. For readers who may not be familiar, what is the mission of Emerald Coast PBS, and what does your role as CEO look like on a daily basis? Emerald Coast PBS exists for a very simple reason: our community deserves public television. Our mission is to educate, inform, inspire and connect the people of Northwest Florida and the Gulf Coast through trusted PBS programming, educational services, lifelong learning, local storytelling, and meaningful community partnerships. We want to serve the preschooler learning letters and numbers, the teacher searching for classroom resources, the parent looking for safe and educational children’s
programming, the veteran whose story deserves to be preserved, and the lifelong learner who turns to PBS for history, science, culture, public affairs, and the arts. Right now, my daily job is probably unlike that of most PBS General Managers because we are essentially building a public television organization from the ground up. One hour I may be talking with PBS or working on broadcast and engineering issues. The next hour I may be meeting with a potential donor, teacher, community organization, or business leader. Then we may be discussing educational outreach, programming, fundraising, partnerships, or plans for local productions. There really isn’t a typical day. But every day revolves around the same question: How can Emerald Coast PBS serve this community? Many people feel a pull toward supporting their community but aren’t sure where to start. What do you believe are the most accessible ways someone can begin engaging with or supporting public television and educational programming? The wonderful thing about public media is that there is room for everyone. You don’t have to write a huge check to make a difference — but we do need donor support as we build Emerald Coast PBS and reestablish a local PBS presence in this region. There are other ways to help as well. Become a member. Volunteer at a children’s event. Tell a teacher about PBS LearningMedia. Share one of our posts on social media. Introduce us to a business or foundation that cares about education. Encourage a young family to engage with PBS KIDS resources. And perhaps most importantly, tell people why public television matters to you. 59
| The Advocate We are building an “I Am PBS” campaign because PBS isn’t a building or a television tower. PBS is people. I am PBS. A kindergarten teacher is PBS. A child watching Daniel Tiger is PBS. A veteran sharing his or her story is PBS. A parent, librarian, volunteer, donor or lifelong learner can all say, “I am PBS.” When thousands of people each do something small, together they can accomplish something extraordinary.
imaginable. Others don’t. But if a child can turn on a television and find PBS KIDS free over the air, we have put a remarkable educational resource into that child’s home regardless of the family’s income. That keeps me hopeful — and it is one of the biggest reasons I am determined to establish Emerald Coast PBS. But we need the support of the community to build it and make it strong. People that want to be a part of saving PBS for our region can visit emeraldcoastpbs.org to donate and volunteer.
What is one misconception people often have about public broadcasting, and how do you wish the community understood it differently?
Leading a public media station through funding challenges and change frequently requires both vision and resilience. When you face difficult or uncertain days, what practices or support systems help sustain you?
I think one of the biggest misconceptions is that PBS is simply another television channel. It isn’t. Television is how many people first experience PBS, but the mission extends far beyond the television screen. PBS is early childhood education. It is teacher training and classroom resources. It is PBS LearningMedia. It is literacy. It is science and history. It is arts and culture. It is documentaries and local storytelling. It is preserving the memories of veterans and recording the history of a community. And there is another important distinction: public television is public. And it is local. It belongs to the communities it serves. When you support your local PBS organization, you’re not simply paying for television programs. You’re investing in an educational and cultural resource for your neighbors and future generations. You’ve seen firsthand how educational programming and outreach impact children and families. What keeps you hopeful, and what moments remind you of the importance of the work being done at Emerald Coast PBS? The children keep me hopeful. I have spent decades watching what happens when you put the right educational resource into the hands of a child, parent or teacher. Some of my favorite memories aren’t glamorous. They’re moments like seeing a preschooler’s face when they meet a PBS KIDS character they love. Watching thousands of families come together for Be My Neighbor Day. Seeing children explore educational activities at our PBS KIDS events. Watching a teacher leave a workshop excited because she found something she couldn’t wait to use with her students. We created opportunities like Amazing Kids Day for children with autism and special needs. We brought educational programs into communities throughout Northwest Florida. We connected teachers with PBS resources they could use free of charge. Those experiences taught me something very important: You may never know which moment changes a child’s life. That is why access matters. Some children have every educational advantage www.ScarlettMag.com
I remind myself why we’re doing it. There have certainly been difficult days, particularly during this period of enormous change in public broadcasting. Starting Emerald Coast PBS from the ground up has required faith, determination, and more than a little persistence. But whenever I become discouraged, I think about the people we serve. I think about the teachers I have worked with for 30 years. I think about the children who grew up with PBS KIDS. I think about the veterans who trusted us with their stories. I think about the families who depend on free, over-the-air educational television. I also draw tremendous strength from the people around me — family, friends, colleagues, our board members and community members who have stepped forward and said, “We want to help.” Sometimes resilience is simply remembering that the mission is bigger than the difficult moment you happen to be facing. I’ve learned that when something matters deeply enough, you keep going. Can you share a program, initiative, or recent milestone at Emerald Coast PBS that you are especially proud of? Right now, I am most proud of the fact that Emerald Coast PBS exists at all. When it became clear that our region could lose its local connection to PBS, we had a choice. We could accept that loss, or we could try to build something new. We chose to build. We established a new nonprofit organization and began working to restore PBS service to our region. We are building relationships with educators, community leaders, veterans, businesses, foundations, and families. What makes me particularly proud is that we aren’t simply trying to recreate what existed before. We have an opportunity to ask, “What should public media look like for this community for the next 50 years?” That’s incredibly exciting. We can build education and community service into the foundation of Emerald Coast PBS from the very beginning. Visit our website EmeraldCoastPBS.org to learn how to donate and volunteer.
