Live by the Sun

Summertime always has a way of hitting right when you’re starting to really feel like it’s time for a break. School’s out, sun’s out, and if it’s your thing, maybe even buns out, babe. Load up on plenty of sunscreen, your favorite book, and that new Stanley bucket you treated yourself to a couple of months back ( no judgment, sis, add those accessories too!) and get your summer vibes going!

I’ve definitely been in my home-is-where-I-want-tobe era lately, but that doesn’t mean a quick getaway doesn’t hit the spot now and then. In April, I made the trek to Jonesborro, AR, to see the total eclipse in the path of totality. And it did not disappoint! Umm, getting to take an entire day to just stare at the sun (safely behind solar lenses, of course) and the moon — sign me up, a million times over. What a magical event that was so worth the drive, the traffic, the fast food, and even a night away from my favorite place, home . And for me, that’s how I try to pick our adventures — just good enough to make it worth leaving for, and just long enough to make you happy to get back to home base.

While you’re out stay- and vay-cationing, don’t forget to take advantage of Scarlett’s digital edition! Reading on the go on your phone or tablet gives you full access to all the latest hot topics. You can click through links, screenshot, or share your favorite stories, and connect with us on social media for updates and special features. And if you need any ideas for your summertime adventure — check out Shooting Star’s new Above and Below photo set, just trust me.

So, no matter where you go over the next couple of months, near or far, soak up that sun, ladies.

LET'S FLY AWAY

AERO CAN TAKE YOU FROM WHEREVER YOU ARE TO WHEREVER YOU WANT TO GO AND ANYWHERE IN BETWEEN.

Wendy Smith, Co-Owner

Wendy Smith's story is one of resilience, vision, and community dedication. Born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, Wendy has called Pensacola, Florida, her home for the past 35 years. Together with her husband Joel, she co-owns Aero Air Charter, a prestigious Part 135 direct air carrier that has earned a Full 135 Gold Rating for its exceptional services. This private jet charter company is not just a business for Wendy; it is a testament to her commitment to excellence and her passion for creating a seamless travel experience for her clients.

Wendy’s path to success is deeply rooted in her upbringing and the inspiring figures in her life. Raised by a single mother, Wendy admired the strength, grace, and tenacity of her mother and her aunt Judy. These women faced numerous challenges but overcame them with remarkable resilience, shaping Wendy into the woman she is today. “They both are my biggest inspirations,” Wendy shares, highlighting the importance of family and strong role models in her journey.

Her journey has not been without its challenges, but Wendy’s faith and determination have been her guiding lights. “I keep God first, made wise choices, hard work and believed in our vision,” she says, summarizing the principles that have guided her through life. This mindset has not only driven her personal growth but also the success of Aero Air Charter.

Aero Air Charter is distinguished by its commitment to providing a superior flight experience. The company offers a range of services that prioritize comfort, efficiency, and personalized attention. From eliminating TSA lines and boarding queues to ensuring clients can fly on their schedule, Aero has redefined private jet travel. The company's fleet, which includes the Light Citation V and the Super Light / Mid-Size Citation XLS, boasts

The Rest of the Family

impressive features like reclining seats, air conditioning, and advanced in-flight amenities, ensuring a luxurious and smooth journey for its passengers.

Wendy's vision for Aero Air Charter extends beyond business success; it is about building a team that shares her dedication and passion. “The driving force behind our success is Team Aero,” she says proudly. The company’s staff, including experienced pilots, embody the expertise and professionalism that make Aero exceptional. Their combined flight hours exceed 50,000, ensuring every flight is operated with the highest standards of safety and reliability.

Wendy's influence and leadership extend far beyond her business. She is deeply involved in the Pensacola community, participating in various organizations and initiatives that are close to her heart. Her contributions to the new Baptist Adolescents and Teen Behavioral Health Unit demonstrate her commitment to improving mental health resources. This state-of-the-art facility offers comprehensive treatment for children and adolescents, providing a nurturing environment for healing. Additionally, Wendy supports the Rally Foundation for Childhood Cancer Research and Covenant Care’s My Wish Program, reflecting her passion for helping children. She is also involved with the Pensacola and Perdido Bay Estuary Program, which works to protect and restore local waterways. Wendy believes in the

strength of community and the power of collective effort. “It is our responsibility to take care of each other,” she asserts, embodying the spirit of giving back that she holds dear.

Wendy’s leadership style is one of collaboration and mutual support. She strives to surround herself with people who have qualities she admires, fostering an environment where everyone uplifts and supports each other. This approach has not only contributed to the success of Aero Air Charter but also to the personal growth of those around her.

Reflecting on her journey, Wendy offers valuable advice to her younger self and others: “It’s completely ok to be different. What makes you different is what makes you special. Also, Rome was not built in a day. Things take time and you must trust the process. Be patient!” Her words resonate with anyone striving to achieve their dreams, reminding them that perseverance and self-belief are crucial.

The remarkable success of Aero Air Charter within just five years makes her story a powerful reminder of what can be achieved with vision, hard work, and a supportive community.

Not all heroes wear capes, some wear fabulous heels. Being a woman can be a difficult job. We are often expected to be everything to everyone. Work hard to reach your full potential in your career field, but also raise a family in-between. Make sure you meet all of your deadlines at work but also bake a casserole and join a book club. While it may seem overwhelming to “do it all,” there are a few local women who seem to have it figured out. And, for that, they are my heroes; or should I say heroines. Malala Fund said, “I want every girl to know that her voice can change the world.” This group of women are bravely climbing to the top and making a difference in the lives of those around them. In these articles, we are raising a glass to some amazing women along the Gulf Coast. As successful businesswomen and entrepreneurs, these women are the examples that we need for our youth. Some are mothers, some are bosses, some are adventurous, some lead quietly from the sidelines, but there is one thing they all have in common — they are heroines. The leaders, the path blazers, the extraordinary women that always go a step above the rest. A heroine is defined as a woman admired or idealized for her courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.

These fearless women are that and more.

photography provided by: Michelle Salzman

In the heart of Escambia County, Florida, there’s a woman whose life story and dedication to service are transforming her community. Michelle Salzman, a Native American descendant of the Muscogee people, has deep roots in the Pensacola/Milton area. Tribal name “Opvnvkv Fvccv-Hayv” — which translates to “truth speaker”, Michelle’s journey from a young mother to a respected lawmaker and philanthropist is a testament to the power of resilience and compassion.

Michelle’s path to becoming a community leader began with a simple act of volunteering in her son’s kindergarten classroom. “I quickly became the room mom,” she recalls, “and seeing so many other kids who needed love and support made me realize I should do more. Not just for my kids, but for all children.” This realization sparked a lifelong commitment to service that has spanned over two decades.

Today, Michelle wears many hats. She’s a small business owner, a lawmaker representing Escambia County, and a dedicated volunteer serving on seven nonprofit boards. Her passion for helping those who cannot help themselves shines through in every aspect of her work.

Michelle’s drive to make a difference stems from a deeply personal place. She credits her mother as her greatest inspiration and hero. “My mom overcame the darkest of times,” Michelle shares. “She was a survivor of human trafficking, poverty, rape, and incest. She truly overcame the darkest of circumstances.” Despite facing addiction later in life, Michelle’s mother showed her daughter unconditional love and support, teaching her that it’s possible to overcome any obstacle.

This lesson in resilience has fueled Michelle’s most significant accomplishments. Her proudest achievement is a mental health initiative that has saved lives and continues to gain momentum. The initiative has led to the opening of a central receiving facility, the implementation of the CORE program and co-responder model, increased reimbursement rates for children’s care, and the establishment of a detox facility, among other crucial improvements.

Michelle’s impact extends beyond policy-making. She has mentored nearly 100 young women across her community and state, helping them navigate professional growth, business development, and leadership skills. Many of these women have gone on to become executive and professional leaders in their own right.

When asked what advice she would give to her 20-yearold self, Michelle offers wisdom that resonates with women of all ages: “When people show you who they are, believe them. It’s okay to give second chances, but forgive, don’t forget. Forgiveness is the critical part.”

Looking ahead, Michelle plans to continue her philanthropic efforts. “I truly believe that if all of us give

just a little bit, no one would be in need,” she says. Her focus remains on those who cannot help themselves, including the disabled, the elderly, and children.

Michelle Salzman’s story is one of turning personal challenges into a force for good — she embodies the spirit of resilience and service. Her journey reminds us that one person’s commitment to their community can create ripples of positive change that touch countless lives.

Lydia Faith Gallup

by:

Lydia Faith Gallup radiates joy and warmth, much like the sunny Florida paradise she now calls home. “When I saw the beaches of Destin, it felt like home,” she says of leaving her New England roots. Though she grew up in the chilly coastal town of New London, Connecticut — the same coastal town Captain Leonard Destin was born in, this vibrant performer always knew she was destined for warmer climes. After over a decade spent in Destin, Lydia still pauses in awe, turning to her husband to remark “Hey, we live here!”

When Lydia first arrived in the area 13 years ago, there were no outlets for her aerial dance performance. Undeterred, she started her own performance troupe, now called Luminary Entertainment Company. “We offer aerial dance (just like in Cirque du Soleil), fire dancing, stilt walking, and other circus-style entertainment to add a unique and fun element to events,” she explains.

Performing has been Lydia’s calling since childhood. “As a little girl, I used to say I wanted to be a dancer, an actress, or a singer,” she recalls. The theatrical costuming she uses for her shows would surely dazzle her younger self. “I still get to dance, and I put my acting skills to use when dancing character pieces up in the air,” she says. “This weekend I’m performing as Barbie, complete with feet wearing invisible high heels!”

Her path to getting here wasn’t always easy, but Lydia learned resilience through life’s ups and downs. “I learned a lot of things the

hard way, and just tried to not make the same mistakes repeatedly. To ‘fail smarter,’ as they say,” she reflects. Those experiences gave her empathy and perspective to more fully appreciate the wonderful life she has today.

When asked about her proudest accomplishment, Lydia’s answer may surprise you. “What I doubted was my capacity for unconditional love, especially in the face of a shrieking being who doesn’t grasp the concept of consequences,” she says of motherhood. “But it turns out loving my daughter is as easy as breathing. My love for her isn’t passive or tame, it is fierce and ceaseless.” Lydia is determined to give her child the durable foundation she lacked, singing “you will come of age with roots and family.”

Lydia counts the incredible women in her life as her biggest influences – “all of my friends, who know how to assemble a delicious cheese board and chat over it until it’s empty,” she says warmly. All have modeled authentic womanhood for her in their own ways. If she could go back and advise her 20-year-old self, Lydia would emphasize self-compassion. “Be kind to yourself. If you wouldn’t talk to a friend that way, don’t talk to yourself that way.”

Her generous spirit shines through in Lydia’s commitment to giving back locally. “I volunteer for and give charity performances at causes like the White Wilson Medical Center’s breast cancer fundraiser, which increases awareness of early detection,” she explains. Her beloved older sister Maria, who passed away too young from the disease, was a tireless volunteer despite her own health struggles. “To honor her, I’ve tried to be involved in my community. In this way, I feel like her light keeps shining,” Lydia says.

Lydia’s company members rave about the uplifting environment she fosters. “Lydia has such a creative mind in addition to being one of the most authentic, supportive women who I’ve met,” says member Danielle. As Lisa remarked, “You have created a safe, fun, low stress environment for your team to grow, learn and thrive! I feel truly blessed to be a part of your team and to be your friend.”

In her own poignant words, Lydia says “I’m not as ambitious as my sister. I don’t have any expectations on impacting the entire world, and I know I can’t shine as brightly as she did. But I can carry my little torch and use it to light more torches, and in our combined light her legacy lives on.” This vibrant light is most certainly brightening her corner of the world.

Ebony Cornish

Inthe energetic city of Pensacola, Florida, one woman is making waves and inspiring change. Meet Ebony Cornish, a dynamic leader whose journey from New Jersey to the Sunshine State has been marked by determination, resilience, and a passion for community service.

As the Senior Account Manager at Amergis Healthcare Staffing, Ebony has found her niche in an industry that directly impacts people’s lives. But her influence extends far beyond her professional role. Ebony’s commitment to her community shines through her numerous leadership positions, including President of the Junior League of Pensacola, First Vice President of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority’s Gamma Tau Zeta Chapter, and Board Member of the Escambia County Public Schools Foundation.

When asked about the driving force behind her success, Ebony credits a combination of hard work, resilience, and the unwavering support of those around her. “I’ve faced challenges and setbacks,” she admits, “but each one has taught me valuable lessons and helped me grow stronger.” Her journey is a testament to the power of perseverance and the importance of embracing both triumphs and trials.

Ebony’s path to community involvement was paved by inspiration from the dedicated individuals she encountered along the way. “Seeing the impact that dedicated individuals can have on their communities motivated me to take action,” she explains. This motivation, coupled with her passion for making a positive difference, has fueled her commitment to various causes.

One of Ebony’s proudest accomplishments is being the first person in her immediate family to graduate from college. This milestone not only represents her personal dedication but also opens doors for future generations. It’s a powerful reminder that with determination anything is possible.

When it comes to female influences, Ebony doesn’t have to look far. Her mother, with more than 30 years in banking and finance, has been a constant source of inspiration. Ebony marvels at her mother’s recent career pivot to the Department of Defense – Human Resources sector, demonstrating that it’s never too late to embrace change and pursue new opportunities.

Ebony’s commitment to giving back is evident in her numerous community roles. From youth ministry to healthcare advocacy, she’s dedicated to fostering a more inclusive and vibrant Gulf Coast area. Looking ahead, she plans to leverage her healthcare administration background to address disparities and improve access to quality care in Pensacola and beyond.

As a leader, Ebony takes pride in the achievements of those around her. At Amergis Healthcare Staffing, she’s fostered an environment that encourages strategic thinking and effective communication, leading to significant milestones in acquiring and maintaining large state and local government

partnerships. Her leadership extends to the Junior League of Pensacola, where she collaborates with more than 20 leaders annually to implement impactful community initiatives.

For young women just starting their journey, Ebony offers this advice: “Trust in yourself and your journey. Embrace every experience, whether good or bad, as they will shape you into who you are meant to become. Keep learning, keep growing, and never underestimate your potential.”

Ebony Cornish’s story is one of continuous growth, dedication, and the power of community. Through her professional achievements and community involvement, she’s not just making a difference — she’s inspiring others to do the same. As Pensacola and the wider Gulf Coast area continue to evolve, leaders like Ebony are ensuring that progress is inclusive, impactful, and rooted in the spirit of service.

Angelique Morris

n the heart of Pensacola, Florida, there’s a woman whose infectious energy and unwavering commitment to community service are making a real difference. Meet Angelique Morris, a native Pensacolian whose life story is as inspiring as it is heartwarming.

Currently working at the University of West Florida, Angelique’s days are filled with purpose far beyond her professional role. She’s a whirlwind of community involvement, participating in initiatives that touch countless lives. From serving as an Ambassador for The Greater Pensacola Chamber to supporting organizations like Impact 100, Zion Hope Outreach Ministry, the Alzheimer’s Association, and the American Heart Association, Angelique’s dedication knows no bounds.

But where does this passion for service come from? Angelique credits her upbringing. “I became the woman I am because I had great parents,” she shares. “They raised me to work hard, to not look down on others, to show appreciation, help whenever you can, believe in God, and always pray!”

This foundation laid by her parents shaped Angelique’s core values and her approach to life. Her mother, a nurse, and her father, a part-time handyman, instilled in her the desire to be both a “helper” and a “fixer.” “I genuinely love helping others or finding solutions to fix a problem,” Angelique explains. “The opportunities are endless in our city and in our community. It’s important to me that I do my part to help by getting involved and making a difference whenever I can.”

Angelique’s biggest female influencer is, without a doubt, her mother, Angilene Hafler. “She’s so strong!” Angelique exclaims. “Strong-willed, strong-minded, always determined to

achieve all of her goals, and to live life to the fullest!” It’s clear that this strength and determination have been passed down to Angelique.

One of Angelique’s proudest moments came recently when the City of Pensacola erected a plaque commemorating the 1955 Pensacola Jaycees baseball team. “The plaque is near the Wahoo stadium for all of the community to see and for the legacy of the team to live on,” she says proudly. “Others had tried and failed, but I had a goal and I was determined and even though it took two long years, it finally came to fruition with the help of several key city officials, staff members, and Freddie Augustine, a previous Jaycee.”

This persistence and dedication are hallmarks of Angelique’s approach to community service. Looking to the future, she plans to continue volunteering wherever there’s need. “I’m currently working with several wonderful nonprofits as a Board Member for The Escambia County Public School Foundation, Community Liaison for Ruff Path and Hands 2 Help.” she shares. “I plan on helping them expand their reach and secure sponsorship and community engagement opportunities.”

Exciting new opportunities are on the horizon for Angelique. She was recently selected to participate in LEAP, a leadership program that she’s thrilled about. “I’m really looking forward to learning new leadership skills that will be applied in the years to come,” she says enthusiastically. Additionally, she plans to

work with the Pensacola Lighthouse and Maritime Museum to bring awareness about Prince Morris, the first black lighthouse keeper.

Angelique’s impact extends beyond her community work. With 15 years of experience as a credit union Branch Manager and five years as a Business Development Specialist, she’s had ample opportunity to mentor others. “I’ve enjoyed having the opportunity to mentor others in the art of leadership, networking, and making meaningful connections,” she reflects. “I’m truly grateful to those that mentored me so that I could mentor others!”

When asked what advice she’d give her 20-year-old self, Angelique doesn’t hesitate: “Don’t be afraid, just go for it, take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way!” It’s clear that Angelique has lived by these words, seizing opportunities to make a difference at every turn.

Angelique Morris is more than just a community leader, she’s a beacon of hope, a tireless advocate, a “people connector.” She even has a personal slogan: “Everyone needs an Angei.” She is a shining example of what it means to live a life of purpose. Her story reminds us that with determination, compassion, and a willingness to roll up our sleeves, we can all make a significant impact in our communities. As Angelique continues to make waves in Pensacola, she inspires us all to ask ourselves: How can we make a difference today?

Souvenir

Imagine you're on your next vacation — wandering through a bustling outdoor market, the aroma of spices and street foods filling the air. Vibrant textiles and handicrafts catch your eye, each colorful stall overflowing with potential mementos of your travels. But how do you choose souvenirs that you'll truly appreciate when you return home, rather than having them gather dust on a shelf?

The ideal souvenir should spark joyful memories each time you see or use it. It's worth taking some time to selectively choose pieces that genuinely speak to you rather than impulsively buying every knickknack just because it’s cute, has your name on it, or lists the city you’re visiting. With a little strategy, your souvenirs can become beloved keepsakes that transport you back to your adventures with every glance.

First, gravitate toward high-quality, locally-made crafts that showcase the region's culture and artistry. Massproduced touristy trinkets tend to feel generic and disposable. But an item intricately hand-carved, woven, or painted by a skilled local artisan offers a more authentic piece of the destination.

Look for useful items you'll actually put to work at home like textiles, ceramics, woodcarvings, or basketry. A vibrant handwoven blanket or tablecloth can add global flair to your living spaces while reminding you of your travels. Ceramic dishes, mugs, or a hand-painted bowl can elevate your everyday meals with memories. An ornately carved wooden box or basket can store small treasures with exotic artistic appeal.

Edibles and drinkables can provide delicious remembrances, but be mindful of customs regulations for carrying certain foods across borders. Spice blends, locally-produced wines, spirits, or gourmet treats allow you to recreate flavors of your adventures in your own kitchen.

Consider wearable treasures like jewelry, accessories, or clothing that helps you integrate your travels into your daily lifestyle. A colorful scarf, robe, shawl, or sandals imparts elements of the local aesthetic into your wardrobe. When selecting adornments like necklaces, bracelets, or earrings, seek out quality materials and craftsmanship that will endure proudly for years.

For home decor, shop for artwork, ceramics, textiles, or sculptures that genuinely speak to your artistic sensibilities. Will you truly appreciate that mass-produced canvas painting or carved mask years from now? Only invest in quality pieces that you'll want to highlight prominently where you can admire them frequently.

While on the road, keep an eye out for the souvenirs that catch your eye again and again as you journey. Don't finalize purchases until the end, giving yourself time to seriously consider each potential keepsake rather than accumulating clutter in a whirlwind souvenir sweep.

Men — can’t live with them, can’t live without them. But luckily we’ve found a few good men! Leaders, mentors, partners, gentlemen. There are approximately 161.6 million men in the United States. That’s a big number, but all we need is a few good men to make a difference. We are lucky that the Gulf Coast has as many good men as they do palm trees. Our area is booming with strong male role models helping to lead the way and to guide the younger generations down the right path. These men are out there in our community making a real difference. They are running businesses, they are volunteering, they are working at the local nonprofits, they are fathers, and they are husbands. These men are juggling all of these jobs and are doing it with style and grace. Being a good man is more than just following the rules, it’s being the individual who goes above and beyond. It’s being the man who isn’t afraid to stand up for what is right. A truly good man is one whose traits perfectly balance out. He is both strong and sensitive, a leader but can also take direction. A good man is someone you can look up to.

Dr. Clay Sims

Owner + Orthodontist, Sims Orthodontics

Gulf Breeze, FL

Inthe charming town of Gulf Breeze, Florida, there’s an orthodontic practice that’s about much more than just creating beautiful smiles. At Sims Orthodontics, giving back to the community is at the heart of what they do thanks to the vision and leadership of Owner and Orthodontist, Dr. Clay Sims.

Born and raised in Gulf Breeze, Dr. Clay always knew he wanted to make a positive impact close to home. After a life-changing experience assisting underserved communities in the Dominican Republic during dental school, his passion for helping others was ignited. “True wealth comes from the ability to help others with your time or resources and demonstrating that you have more than enough to share,” Dr. Clay reflects.

At the helm of his thriving practice, Dr. Clay has made it his mission to support a variety of local causes and organizations. From sponsoring school initiatives to participating in dental clinics like Mission of Mercy and Give Kids a Smile, the Sims Orthodontics’ team is continuously finding ways to give back.

One cause particularly close to Dr. Clay’s heart is the Arc Gateway organization, which provides services for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. With a special needs child of his own, Dr. Clay understands firsthand the importance of such support systems within a community. As the King Crab Sponsor for Arc Gateway’s annual Crab Cake Cook-off, he enthuses, “It’s a true honor to be involved with an organization making such a meaningful difference.”

Dr. Clay’s philosophy of “giving back” extends far beyond just writing checks, however. Over the years, he’s had the opportunity to embark on four mission trips to third world countries, providing much-needed dental care to underserved populations. “Those experiences were humbling and reminded me of how privileged we are,” he shares.

When asked what advice he’d give his 20-year-old self, Dr. Clay emphasizes the importance of slowing down, appreciating life’s small moments, and having patience and grace for those around you. “You never know what others are going through,” he reflects wisely.

Of course, none of Dr. Clay’s incredible work would be possible without the unwavering support of his wife, Jennifer, who he credits as his biggest inspiration. “Jennifer is the light in our lives,” he beams. “Her ability to stay positive and present while caring for our special-needs child is remarkable.

She’s a true role model.”

Looking ahead to the next five years, Dr. Clay has no plans of slowing down his giveback efforts. Through initiatives like the Teachers Wish List program, where patients nominate their favorite teachers to receive classroom sponsorships, he hopes to expand Sims Orthodontics’ community impact even further, already having donated $10,000 over the years. Additionally, through Sims Orthodontics, we have supported the cleft & craniofacial clinic, treating many children with craniofacial conditions. We’ve participated in Give Kids a Smile and various dental mission works.

At the end of the day, perhaps Dr. Clay’s proudest accomplishment is the connections he’s forged through his work — with colleagues, patients, friends and family. By seamlessly blending his professional skills with a deep-rooted passion for service, he’s created a powerful ripple effect of positive change. “Our mission is ‘Transforming Smiles and So Much More,’” he shares. “The impact goes far beyond just creating beautiful smiles.”

From this small-town orthodontic practice, one thing is amazingly clear: When your work is fueled by care, compassion, and a genuine desire to uplift those around you, you have the power to reshape lives and communities through the simple act of giving back.

Allen Padgett

Growingup in the lively city of New Orleans before moving to the sandy shores of Fort Walton Beach, Allen Padgett’s path was shaped by the diverse landscapes and rich cultures of the South. Today, he calls Santa Rosa Beach home, a vibrant community where he has firmly planted his roots, both personally and professionally.

As the Owner and Founder of The Salon Trinity in nearby Miramar Beach, Allen has built a flourishing business guided by a philosophy that resonates deeply within him: “Success unshared is failure.” These words, spoken by entrepreneur John Paul DeJoria, became a cornerstone of Allen’s approach to life and work.

“When I opened my salon, this principle became the foundation of everything we do,” Allen explains. “It’s why I prioritize providing benefits to my team, supporting our community through donations, sponsorships, and drives, and actively encouraging others to join our efforts.”

This commitment to giving back has manifested in tangible ways. For the past four years, The Salon Trinity has held a “Giving Back” program, donating a portion of its monthly proceeds to various local nonprofits. Allen and his team also encourage their salon guests to contribute with monetary or physical donations, fostering a culture of collective impact.

“This initiative has become a cornerstone of our business, and it’s something we are committed to continuing,” Allen affirms. “In the next five years, I hope to expand this program by organizing volunteer days, where our team will actively assist these nonprofits in any way we can.”

Allen’s dedication to uplifting others extends beyond his professional endeavors. When reflecting on his proudest accomplishment, he points to his 20-year marriage, a partnership that has weathered life’s storms and celebrated its triumphs.

“This year, my husband and I celebrate 20 years together, having navigated life’s ups and downs side by side,” he shares. “We’ve faced family tragedies, moves, home builds, and even opened a business right before a pandemic. We’ve also been fortunate to travel extensively, sharing incredible experiences and creating lasting memories.”

At the core of Allen’s journey lies a profound reverence for his mother, Linda Clark, whom he considers his greatest female influence. “I am in awe of the sacrifices she made for us

growing up and how she shielded us from the challenges and struggles she faced,” he says. “I often wonder if I could have shown the same strength, courage, faith, charity, and love if I were in her shoes. Her example is a guiding light for me, and I strive every day to live up to it.”

As a leader, Allen’s approach is rooted in empowerment and mentorship. “Each member of our team has unique goals and career paths, as success means something different to everyone,” he explains. “I’ve been fortunate to be part of each journey, offering mentorship and guidance to help them achieve their objectives.”

Looking back, Allen’s advice to his 20-year-old self encapsulates the wisdom he has gained: “Life is truly a journey complete with ups, downs, twists, and turns. The journey is the destination, so enjoy every moment of it.”

For Allen Padgett, success is not a solitary pursuit but a collaborative endeavor, one that is amplified by uplifting others and leaving a lasting, positive impact on the world around him.

Dr. Kevin Kovacs

Ifyou meet Dr. Kevin Kovacs, Principal and Head of School at Dixon School of Arts & Sciences in Cantonment, Florida, one thing is immediately apparent — this is a man who truly loves what he does. His warm smile, friendly demeanor, and infectious enthusiasm make it clear that promoting joyful learning is more than just a mission statement for him.

Originally from Westport, Connecticut, Dr. Kevin spent his formative years in Boston where he met his wife of 31 years. After more than two decades in South Florida, the couple relocated to the Pensacola area to be closer to their daughter’s growing family. “I have other titles, but the one I prefer most is Grampa,” he beams.

At Dixon, a nonprofit K-8 school providing tuition-free education through an income-based scholarship program, Dr. Kevin has found his calling. The school’s STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math) approach integrates the arts into a rigorous academic curriculum. “Through the arts and these creative approaches, our goal is to promote the joy of learning for every Dixon student,” Dr. Kevin explains.

Key to achieving that goal are the school’s numerous community partnerships. By collaborating with local arts centers, science organizations, musicians, theaters, and other nonprofits, Dixon provides students with enriching experiential learning opportunities beyond the classroom walls.

Dr. Kevin has thrown himself wholeheartedly into strengthening those bonds since arriving in Pensacola. “I’m pretty sure I’ve met everyone in Pensacola!” he laughs. From the Pensacola Chamber of Commerce to Parent University to volunteer groups like the Krewe of Priscus, he has enthusiastically embedded himself and Dixon into the fabric of the community.

His passion for people and giving back stems in part from the powerful influence of his mother. “She was our family leader and my greatest role model in facing adversity. She’s 83 going on 23 — probably at Zumba right now!”

That same resilient spirit shines through in Dr. Kevin’s advice to his 20-year-old self: “Don’t be afraid to sing … and if you’re going to get on that stage, you might as well sing loud. Don’t be afraid to take the risk of doing something for the first time … and do it big.”

Big risks have paid off for Kevin, who spent 17 years in school leadership roles before coming to Dixon. “I’ve had about four amazing jobs, and about forty terrifying interviews,” he reflects. “Don’t let the ones you didn’t get worry you.”

One risk he’ll keep taking is putting students’ joy first. “The children are our best barometer … I’m talking about the words they speak, the joy they exalt when they talk about their school.” It’s that contagious energy and mindset that Dr. Kevin brings to Dixon every day.

As he looks ahead to his third year as principal, he is eager to deepen community ties and promote more family volunteerism. “I’m so excited to be planning for my third year … I’m excited to work with more Pensacola nonprofits, arts and science organizations, and anyone who wants to experience our awesome school.”

With Dr. Kevin Kovacs at the helm, the future looks bright for Dixon’s students — and for cultivating more joy in the Pensacola community. As he puts it, “I intend to promote volunteerism even more from our Dixon families and anyone that wants to help in our mission. Join us. I’d like to meet you (if I haven’t already).”

Hey! I’m Shanna Star. Photographer, hype woman, podcaster, and lover of the fabulous Gulf Coast I now get to call my home — here to photograph YOU with bright, fun photos, great poses, and of course locations and sets that connect with you!

I’m thrilled to announce a new photo set that I’ve been eager to bring to life for quite some time: Above and Below underwater and drone portrait sessions! This unique photoshoot experience combines the ethereal beauty of underwater photography with the stunning aerial perspectives captured by drones, creating a truly captivating and multidimensional portrait series.

While model Lydia and I have both had some previous experience with underwater photography, this venture still presented its fair share of challenges and learning opportunities. Underwater photography requires a specific skill set and understanding of how light, movement, and buoyancy interact beneath the surface. Similarly, incorporating drone technology adds another layer of complexity, requiring precise coordination and timing to capture the perfect shot from above.

Preparation was key to ensuring these sessions were not only visually striking but also safe for everyone involved. This meant investing in the right equipment, including waterproof camera housings, specialized lighting gear, and of course, a high-quality drone capable of capturing crisp aerial imagery. We also had to consider factors such as water clarity, weather conditions, and our comfort levels and underwater safety throughout the shoot.

I’m thrilled to say, the resulting photos are nothing short of fabulous, showcasing a dreamlike quality that merges the grace of underwater movement with the broader context provided by the aerial shots.

A huge debt of gratitude goes out to Capt. Megan Gaster, who generously offered us the use of the Legendary Marine Yacht Club pool. This location proved to be absolutely perfect for our shoot, providing crystal-clear water

and a beautiful setting that exceeded even my highest expectations. I also want to extend my heartfelt thanks to Lydia Gallup, a talented aerial performer and the founder of Luminary Entertainment Company. Lydia’s natural grace and flexibility, honed through her entertainment background, made her the ideal model for this experimental shoot. Her willingness to push boundaries and try new things underwater resulted in some truly breathtaking images.

Now that we’ve done the hard work of testing and refining this concept, I’m excited to offer underwater and drone portrait sessions to all of my clients! (You’ll be responsible for securing a pool location.) If you’re interested in creating your own magical above-andbelow portraits, here are a few tips to help you prepare:

1. Wardrobe: Choose a dress or outfit with plenty of layers and volume. Flowing fabrics create stunning effects underwater, so the more “fluff,” the better!

2. Makeup: Invest in a good setting spray to ensure your makeup stays put during the underwater portion of the shoot.

3. Underwater techniques: Be prepared to use weights, such as belts or small dumbbells, to help you stay submerged for those perfect underwater poses. This might feel a bit strange at first, but it’s essential for achieving the desired effect.

4. Comfort in the water: You may feel more comfortable inviting a spotter to accompany you during the shoot. While we’ll take every precaution to ensure your safety and comfort, it’s worth noting that you may occasionally get a little water up your nose during the underwater portions. Don’t worry — it’s all part of the experience!

These Above and Below sessions offer a unique way to beat the summer heat while creating truly extraordinary portraits. The combination of otherworldly underwater imagery and sweeping aerial views results in a one-of-a-kind photo series that you’ll treasure for years to come.

If you’re ready to dive into this exciting new world of photography, don’t hesitate to reach out! Let’s work together to create some unforgettable images that showcase your beauty and grace both above and below the water’s surface.

Denim Decoded

Every woman needs a great pair of jeans in her wardrobe. But with so many different styles, cuts, and washes available, how do you find the perfect jeans for your body type and style? Don't worry, babe, we've got you covered with this handy guide to all things denim.

Let's start with the basics — the different styles of jeans and what they're best suited for. Skinny jeans have been super popular for years now, flattering most body types with their sleek, streamlined fit. They look great paired with booties or tucked into tall boots. Just make sure you go for a pair with some stretch so you can actually move and breathe!

On the opposite end of the spectrum are wide-leg, flare, and bootcut jeans. With a sleek fit through the hips and thighs that gradually widens from the knee down, these '70s-inspired styles add some throwback flair. Flare and bootcut work well for balancing out wider hips or thicker thighs. Just add platforms or wedges to elongate your legs.

The classic straight leg jean is a wardrobe staple that's perfect for a casual look. With a straight fit all the way from hip to hem, they're not too tight and not too loose. Straight jeans work for just about every body type. They look great when worn with a longer untucked top, or you could tuck in a tee or bodysuit to show off those hips!

For those who want a looser, more relaxed fit, boyfriend and mom jeans are where it's at. With roomier legs

and a slightly saggy look, they're the ideal casual weekend jean. Pair them with sneakers, crop tops, or tied flannel shirts for a laid-back, model-off-duty vibe. Just remember, you want loose, but not too baggy in the rear or thighs.

When shopping for jeans, the most important thing is finding a style and fit that makes you feel confident and comfortable. Don't get too hung up on size numbers, as they can vary wildly between brands. I mean, seriously, it’s basically random. It's best to try jeans on and go by how they actually look and feel on your unique body.

For larger thighs or curvy hips, look for stretch denim with room through the hip and thigh area, but not overly baggy. A higher rise will also prevent unsightly gapping or hide that bit of extra fluff. If you're on the straighter side, bootcut, flare, or boyfriend jeans can help create more curve. And don't forget about getting jeans that are a bit too long hemmed or cuff them in a pinch!

No matter your size or shape, there's absolutely a style of jean out there that will make you look and feel amazing. And if you find a pair that fits you perfectly, buy two!

The perfect home for you is a place that fits your lifestyle, a home tailored to you and your family’s everyday life with its features and amenities. Throughout this article, we’ll provide examples of how your home should be tailored to your lifestyle to help paint the picture using an execute style home, 4068 W Madura Road in Gulf Breeze, as an example.

The Lifestyle: Homes on a golf course provide a lifestyle full of convenient rides to everyday activities like going out to eat at a local restaurant while adding a fun element to everyday activities. This holds true for 4068 W Madura, located on the 7th fairway of Tiger Point Golf Club in Gulf Breeze. The breeze from the bay while cruising around on the golf course, to a fairway-adjacent bar, or over to the grocery store feels a lot more peaceful on a golf cart.

The Future: The owners of the Madura home purchased the home with the intention of making memories with their family; they knew the grand foyer area with a stunning staircase provided the perfect backdrop for their children’s prom pictures. The family also knew that with three daughters, large closets were essential as they grew up.

This is an example of thinking through what you’ll need over the coming years and how the home can fill those needs versus

just thinking of the present. When looking at a home, you envision the special moments you and your loved ones will make together, as each feature creates a place for potential memories.

The Kitchen: It’s essential to think about how you like to enjoy your kitchen and living area and whether you prefer more secluded spaces or an open layout. The Madura home is perfect for the person who wants to cook and enjoy all the specialty features such as a wine chiller, gas cooktop, and double wall ovens in a kitchen that overlooks the living room and pool. Have you ever had your family ask you to ‘take a look at this!’ at what’s on tv and you have to run to the other room? With Madura’s open layout, this situation won’t happen and your food won’t get burned in the process in a home like this.

The Work Situation: Another important factor to consider when purchasing a home that fits your lifestyle is your work situation. Are you someone who works from home often? Is there a lot of equipment or supplies associated with your job? Storage space and a dedicated workspace would be things to consider, just like the numerous workspaces in Madura. There is an office with double doors and a built-in bookcase, a desk in the kitchen, and a built-in study in the bonus room upstairs, as well as large walk-in and walkaround closets and a three-car garage.

Outdoor Space: If you enjoy entertaining, a large outdoor space could provide the perfect opportunity for parties, just like Madura’s numerous seating areas and outdoor bar and screen-enclosed pool and hot tub area that provides a space to be enjoyed year-round.

1313 Creighton Rd • Pensacola, 32504 850.554.1783

The Trends That Last: Looking for trends you love can help you narrow down the best fit for your lifestyle, for example – a second living room, which is located upstairs with its own private entrance by the garage in this Gulf Breeze home. This trend has become more mainstream as more people work remotely. Second living spaces enhance home value, and they provide versatility and a space to personalize based on your needs. The versatility is endless as different members of the family may want to watch different TV shows or play video games and having a second living room provides this opportunity. The secondary living room could also potentially be another bedroom.

Location Is Essential: When purchasing a home that fits your lifestyle, location is absolutely essential. It’s important to be close to where you work, where you shop, and other places that you frequent. The Madura home is located in the heart of the Tiger Point Community and offers close proximity to the beach, NAS Pensacola, and downtown Pensacola, making a trip to the beach or to Seville a [Gulf] breeze.

Ultimately, the home that’s designed for your lifestyle not only meets your practical needs but also aligns with your personal tastes, creating synergy between you and your living space.

Giving Yourself

written by: Molly Rivers

How often do you find yourself waiting for someone else's approval before pursuing your dreams or taking care of your own needs? If you're like many women, you might be caught in a cycle of seeking external validation, putting others first, and neglecting your own well-being. It's time to break free from this pattern and learn the liberating art of giving yourself permission. Self-permission is the act of consciously allowing yourself to think, feel, or do something without seeking approval from others. It's about trusting your own judgment and honoring your needs and desires. When you give yourself permission, you take control of your life and open doors to personal growth and fulfillment. The benefits of self-permission are numerous and impactful. By trusting your own decisions, you build faith in your abilities and judgment, increasing your self-confidence. Letting go of the need for constant approval from others can significantly lower stress and anxiety levels. When you allow yourself to explore without fear of judgment, your creative potential flourishes. Setting healthy boundaries and prioritizing self-care leads to more balanced and fulfilling connections with others. Ultimately, pursuing your authentic desires and needs often results in a more meaningful and enjoyable life.

To start giving yourself permission, first recognize your autonomy. Remember that you are an adult capable of making your own choices. Your life is yours to live. Identify limiting beliefs by noticing thoughts like "I shouldn't" or "I'm not allowed." Challenge these beliefs and consider where they came from. Begin with minor decisions, like giving yourself permission to take a break or try a new hobby. Practice selfcompassion by treating yourself with the same kindness and understanding you'd offer a good friend. Learn to set and communicate boundaries, saying no to things that don't align with your values or goals. Celebrate your choices by acknowledging and appreciating when you make decisions that honor your needs and desires.

As you embark on this journey, you may encounter common obstacles. Fear of judgment can be paralyzing, but remember that others' opinions don't define your worth. Focus on your own values and goals instead. Guilt might creep in, but understand that taking care of yourself isn't selfish — it's necessary for your well-being and ability to care for others. Perfectionism can hold you back, so give yourself permission to make mistakes and learn from them. Progress, not perfection, is the goal. Breaking old patterns takes time, so be patient with yourself as you develop new habits of self-permission.

The practice of self-permission can be applied to various aspects of your life. In your career, give yourself permission to pursue that promotion, change

careers, or start your own business. In relationships, allow yourself to set boundaries, express your needs, or leave unhealthy situations. Prioritize activities that nurture your physical and mental health without feeling guilty. Pursue interests, learn new skills, or take risks that align with your personal goals. Express yourself through art, writing, or other creative outlets without fear of criticism.

When you give yourself permission to live authentically and prioritize your well-being, you set a powerful example for others. You show those around you — especially other women and girls — that it's okay to value themselves and make choices based on their own needs and desires. Moreover, by taking care of yourself, you become better equipped to support and inspire others. It's like the airline safety instruction to put on your own oxygen mask before helping others — you need to be well to be truly present for those you care about.

Giving yourself permission is a journey, not a destination. It's a practice that grows stronger with time and conscious effort. As you embark on this path, be gentle with yourself. Celebrate small victories and learn from setbacks. Remember, you are worthy of living a life that aligns with your values, dreams, and needs. By giving yourself permission, you unlock the door to a more authentic, fulfilling, and empowered life. So go ahead — grant yourself that permission slip to thrive. You deserve it, babe!

When you give yourself permission to live authentically and prioritize your well-being, you set a powerful example for others.

It is important to acknowledge that Human Trafficking is often misunderstood and is plagued by what media and movies portray. In layman’s terms, human trafficking is defined as the “exploitation of vulnerabilities.” The reality is that victims are lured into a criminal industry through the ploy of a fake relationship or job. Online recruiting of victims happens consistently more often than the fearful tactic of “stranger danger.” Traffickers use scripted “isolated compliments,” specific times of day: morning, after school, and right before bed: to ensure they are the first and last thing their potential victim thinks about each day.

The seduction of bribery, gifts, and promises appeal to one’s vulnerabilities. Once the victim has locked into a professional or personal relationship with the predator, the script flips and threats, blackmail, and violence ensue. This recruiting and grooming process can last months or even years. It can become a generational cycle unless a survivor refuses to continue the abuse.

Survivor leaders have the power to change this narrative.

To change that narrative, SurvivorLed Solutions (SLS) is a local 501c3 nonprofit that was developed to provide survivor leaders of human trafficking leadership, professional development, and ongoing mental health services. SLS was birthed on July 30th, 2023, on the annual World Against Trafficking in Persons Day. This national awareness day, developed by the United Nations in 2013, was the perfect way to honor the advocacy and awareness this day was intended for. Providing Survivor leaders with the power and platform to share their stories commemorated the small beginnings of Survivor-Led Solutions.

The Founder and CEO, Alicia Tappan, is a survivor leader who has spent the last 10 years advocating, empowering, and providing services to survivors. After several years of working and volunteering with other human trafficking service providers and during the transition back into motherhood, she felt the calling to pursue her own God-ordained mission. Throughout the course of her career, she knew there were major gaps in the field. This fueled her desire to educate survivors in professional development and leadership. She knew it was possible

to be re-exploited and revictimized in the healing journey. Essentially, Alicia did not want others to go through what she went through, the way she went through it.

Ongoing training for the education systems, law enforcement, medical, mental health, and faith-based communities is crucial for prevention, intervention, and rehabilitation. Survivor leaders are prime candidates to do this work. Encouraging and supporting survivor leaders with public speaking workshops, building contracts, budgets, and business proposals was the first step. Survivors demand to be seen as subject matter experts and should be given the tools to do so.

The second step: hosting LeadHer Retreats created alternative ways to engage in trauma-informed care services. Ongoing mental health services are essential to build coping mechanisms, ward off vicarious trauma, and deal with the normal nuances of life beyond the trauma. Each retreat is hosted in the community and provides alternative therapeutic modalities to the survivors who attend. By partnering with local businesses these activities are sponsored within the community.

From trauma to triumph, Survivor-Led Solutions provides leadership, professional development, and mental health service opportunities for survivors who are ready to armor up and take a stand against human trafcking.

Examples of some of these services include nutrition classes, spa days, journaling, support groups, 1 on 1 counseling, bible studies, hiking, kayaking, and much more.

During the Destin 2024 Retreat an empowerment photoshoot was on the agenda for activities. Each woman chose their desired outfit and drew up the confidence to strike a pose. Providing professional photography and learning how to engage with the camera positively and professionally is life-changing for survivors. What was once used for evil can be redeemed in safe and trauma-informed ways. Wanting to sparkle and shine again can rebuild self-worth and promote beauty in the best of ways. We are so grateful to have had the opportunity to share this moment with you!

For more information and ways to get involved or financially support Survivor-Led Solutions, please see our website: www. survivorledsolutions.org. We provide training to your business, and organization, and are always looking for ways to connect. The best way to engage in this fight against human trafficking is “to do what you already do well, and add anti-trafficking to it,” says Alicia. We would love to partner with you!

Responsibly

Vacations are for letting loose and rewarding yourself after all that hard work, right? But nobody wants to spend their precious time off feeling hungover and dehydrated from one too many frozen margaritas. The key is finding that sweet spot where you can kick back with a drink (or three) while still feeling great and soaking up all the relaxation vibes.

First up, don’t skip the H2O. Alternate an agua fresca or coconut water between those piña coladas to stay hydrated. And drinking on an empty stomach is just asking for trouble, so make sure to line your stomach with something filling before imbibing. High protein snacks like a handful of nuts or a protein bar can help soak up the alcohol.

When you’re lounging poolside, the sun’s rays can really sneak up on you. Go easy on drinks with higher alcohol content — think wines over martinis. And have a set limit rather than endless refills of that mojitos pitcher. Again, and I can’t say this enough babe, for every alcoholic bevvy, throw back a glass of water to neutralize things.

If you do overindulge (no judgment, ladies), don’t just writhe in misery. Reach for electrolyte drinks, cold brew coffee, or bougie hangover supplements to give your body that boost it’s craving. A sweaty workout can help work through that tequila haze too.

The bottom line — a glass of your fave is fine on vacay, but the key to feeling your best is moderation. With some simple hydration tactics, you can bottoms up without going overboard. Your refreshed, glowing self will thank you later!

Cryo

Looking for an alternative therapy to help treat everything from arthritis to anxiety? Cryotherapy, an innovative treatment that exposes the body to subzero temperatures, is gaining popularity among people seeking natural pain relief and health benefits.

So, what is cryotherapy, anyway?

Cryotherapy involves brief exposure to temperatures around -200°F to -300°F using either a cryosauna, a cryochamber, or a more localized method of exposing specific areas. Depending on which kind of treatment you choose, you may have fullbody exposure, only your head remaining outside the ultra-low temperature environment, or only a specific area exposed to the cold treatment.

The extreme cold triggers physiological responses like vasoconstriction to send blood away from your extremities and into your core. Once the session ends and your body starts rewarming, vasodilation causes blood to rush back into your tissues, delivering a fresh supply of invigorating oxygen and nutrient-rich blood.

What can cryotherapy help with?

Proponents of cryotherapy report diverse benefits like reduced inflammation, improved sleep, boosted energy and metabolism, and enhanced athletic recovery. Though more research is still needed, some studies suggest cryotherapy may help:

• Relieve pain from conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, fibromyalgia, and migraines

• Treat mood disorders like anxiety and depression

• Decrease muscle soreness and speed recovery after intense exercise

• Improve skin conditions like psoriasis and eczema

• Promote weight loss by increasing metabolic rate

Who can benefit from cryotherapy?

While cryotherapy's benefits apply to almost anyone, it may be especially helpful for athletes looking to recover faster between training sessions. The treatment's anti-inflammatory and analgesic (pain-relieving) effects can also greatly benefit people suffering from chronic pain or inflammatory conditions. But for those of us not on the next Olympic schedule,

cryotherapy is still a great option, offering an easy reset for overwhelmed individuals. The extreme cold triggers increased endorphin release and stimulates the vagus nerve — both of which promote feelings of calm and well-being. Those dealing with anxiety, depression, sleep troubles, or high stress could find relief through regular cryotherapy sessions.

Despite being an intense experience, cryotherapy is surprisingly low-risk when safety protocols are followed. However, you'll want to check with your doctor first if you have uncontrolled hypertension, severe diabetes, or certain other conditions.

What are the cool benefits?

Whether you're trying to ease chronic pain, speed athletic recovery, reduce anxiety, boost energy, or achieve your body goals, cryotherapy offers a cool way to help. With its lowrisk yet high-impact, this cutting-edge cold therapy is quickly heating up in popularity among those seeking natural health solutions.

Here are some suggestions to get you going:

Self and Personal Space

Turn the camera on yourself and your immediate surroundings. Capture self-portraits, your daily routines, favorite objects, and the spaces you inhabit. Document your style, your hobbies, and the little details that make your life unique.

Nature and the Outdoors

Focus on the natural world around you. Whether you live in a bustling city or a rural area, find ways to capture the beauty of nature. Look for interesting plants, animals, landscapes, and weather phenomena. Don't forget to play with scale – from vast vistas to tiny insects.

Urban Life and Architecture

Explore the architecture in your area, from grand buildings to charming details. Capture street scenes, the rhythm of city life, or the quiet corners of your neighborhood. Look for interesting patterns, textures, and the interplay of light and shadow in urban spaces.

People and Relationships

Zoom in on the human element. Practice portrait photography with friends and family — pets count, too! Or try your hand at street photography to capture candid moments. Explore how to convey emotions and relationships through your images. Remember to always respect people's privacy and ask for permission when appropriate.

The Perfect

Cheese Board

Whether you're hosting a laid-back get-together with friends or a more formal dinner party, putting together an impressive cheese board is sure to delight your guests. A well-curated cheese plate can be the stunning centerpiece of your entertaining spread. With a little bit of planning, you can create a beautiful and delicious cheese board that will have everyone raving.

Select Your Cheeses

The key to a great cheese board is achieving a balance of different flavors and textures. Plan for a mix of aged, soft, firm, and blue cheeses. A nice variety allows guests to sample complementary and contrasting tastes. Opt for around 3-5 different cheese varieties depending on the size of your gathering.

For a crowd-pleasing selection, consider an aged cheese like a sharp cheddar or parmesan, a soft cheese like a creamy brie or camembert, something firm like a gruyere or gouda, a blue cheese like a Roquefort or gorgonzola, and a fresh chevre (goat cheese) for a bright, tangy option. Buy enough for around 2-3 ounces of each cheese type per guest.

The Perfect Accompaniments

While the cheeses are the stars, high-quality accompaniments allow you to create perfect cheese and flavor pairings. Look for unique jams, chutneys, mustards, honey, nuts, dried fruits, olives, cornichons, and sliced meats like prosciutto or soppressata.

Fresh herbs add a lovely aromatic touch too. Rosemary, thyme, and edible flowers make a beautiful garnish. And don't forget the crackers and bread! Opt for a variety of thin, sturdy crackers, breadsticks, crusty baguette slices or crostini.

When to Serve

A cheese board can work for almost any gathering from a sophisticated cocktail party to a fun afternoon book club gathering. For casual affairs, its ease and flexibility make it a perfect grazing centerpiece that guests can nibble on throughout the event.

Cheese plates are also a popular course for more formal dinner parties. They can be served before the main course as an appetizer or after for a decadent dessert course. Just leave the cheese board out toward the end of the evening for guests to nibble on alongside dessert wines, ports, or cocktails.

Creating the Display

When displaying your cheese board, take care to arrange it in an appealing way. Use a large wooden board, marble slab, or platter with plenty of room to artfully arrange all your components. Place the different cheeses first, making sure to leave space between each one. Then fill in the gaps with your accompaniments like nuts, fruit, meat, and crackers. Creating small piles or groupings of each gives you space to identify what everything is with some cute labeled name plates or a basic key.

For an extra touch of flair, garnish your board with fresh rosemary sprigs, edible flowers or even figs or grapes draped over the sides. Small ramekins or bowls can hold jams, mustards, or honey for easy dipping.

With some delicious cheeses, tasty accompaniments, and an appealing presentation, you'll create a fantastic cheese board that is sure to "wow" your guests. It's a delightfully indulgent way to elevate your hosting this season. Bon appétit!
