Let’s Grow, Girl
The new year is a time when everyone stops to think about all the things they want to change about themselves. But if I’m being honest, I’d really like to move forward giving myself some grace and positivity this year ... and I hope you will too. I mean, sure, maybe I should lay off the chocolate — although do I really need that kind of negativity in my life? Wink. But more than all the things you’d like to change, I want to encourage you to think about all the things you don’t want to change. What are all the things you absolutely love about yourself and your life that you can make even better this year to ensure they’re still there in another trip around the sun? I look around me and see so many strong, independent, badass women fearlessly creating the life they want to live (I’m looking at you, sis!). And that is exactly the kind of energy I’m bringing with me into the new year. One such woman is our very own Lead Photographer Shanna Star, who is debuting a new department in this Celebration issue called Shooting Star (pg. 87). Not only will we get early access to see some of her most stunning and creative sets, but Scarlett readers will also get an exclusive package deal for booking a featured set during the months that issue is out. I’ve had the privilege of being photographed by Shanna with Scarlett over the last several years, and I can tell you, if you’re on photo by: Shanna Star the fence, get off it and run, don’t walk to book your photoshoot! Big things are coming this year, so think about it this way — we get 1 birthday, 4 seasons, 12 full moons, and 52 Saturdays in 2024. Read the book. Take the class. Give the hugs. Do the photoshoot. Make ‘em count, ladies! At Scarlett, we love bringing you the latest in women’s fashion, beauty, home decor, lifestyle, and health. Thank you all so much for the support as we start our fourth year of Scarlett. Enjoy this issue and connect with us on social media on Facebook: Scarlett Magazine and Instagram: @scarlett.magazine. n the realm of artistic expression, few mediums can claim a history as rich and varied as opera. Dating back to the late 16th Century, this musical form has evolved alongside the everchanging currents of classical music. Opera, with its roots deeply embedded in various forms of song and theatrical performances, represents a timeless expression of human creativity, encompassing drama, music, dance, and other art forms practiced since prehistoric times. Continuing the tradition of the art form’s evolution, Pensacola Opera is set to break new ground with its collaborative event, Rock the Runway, a musical fashion-fusion spectacle featuring members of the star-studded musical show, Rock Me Amadeus Live, originally performed in New York City. This unique event, scheduled for Feb. 22, at Vinyl Music Hall, promises to meld the worlds of rock music, opera, and fashion in a way that transcends the ordinary.
Chandra McKern as Rosina
As for what inspired such a unique event, Pensacola Opera’s General Director Chandra McKern explains, “There is no question that fashion and opera have a long history. The inspiration for having a musical fashion show was simply to unite the overlapping worlds of opera and fashion. Opera-goers know that fashion and costume design are crucial components of opera. Rock the Runway was centered around world-renowned operatic soprano Alyson Cambridge. In addition to her opera career, she is a crossover artist who sings in a variety of styles. New York City’s musical show Rock Me Amadeus Live was co-created and co-produced by Alyson. She is also known for her work as a professional model, actress, and host with four agencies that represent her for print and on-camera commercial modeling. Pensacola Opera wanted to present a musical fashion-fusion event that was entertaining but also true to the mission of our organization while attracting new 19

diverse audiences. We wanted to make sure that we weren’t simply cultivating an audience for strictly a fashion show, but also getting them to an opera event where we have the possibility of generating new opera lovers.” And with all that, attendees can expect more than just the traditional spectacle of an opera — encompassing sets, costumes, special effects, props, and staging. And it will certainly be more than just a typical fashion show, it will be “fashion theater.” Chandra elaborates, “Rock the Runway attendees can expect a unique musical fashion experience combining opera costumes created by Wardrobe Witchery and looks inspired by the featured opera characters put together from local boutiques and stores.” Guests will be entertained by featured castmates of Rock Me Amadeus Live performing your favorite rock and classical songs reimagined and brought to life together like never before. They will bring the grandeur of symphonic classical music, the opulence of opera, and the powerful emotions and nostalgia of rock and pop songs into one electrifying experience. “Set assumptions aside, and plan to be mesmerized by what talented individuals brought together can cook up to entertain the community,” Chandra

says. “There will be a higher level of production value associated with this event, so it isn’t just a standard fashion show, it’s an experience.” Elevating the experience even more, Alyson was able to book some of her castmates from Rock Me Amadeus Live to come to Pensacola for Rock the Runway including drummer Brian Delaney and Australian rock vocalist Toby Rand, who will all be performing several musical numbers. Along with Alyson, the show will also feature local models on the runway. The event's Chair, Madrina Ciano, is selecting all the local boutiques and stores being showcased in the event such as Dillard’s for the opera-inspired looks on the runway. Downtown Pensacola’s Vinyl Music Hall will be the perfect venue to be filled with the sounds of iconic rock and pop songs from your favorite bands from the 70s, 80s, and 90s melded with operatic masterpieces to create an experience unlike anything seen in Pensacola. The space provides an intimate setting for live music and entertainment and can truly be transformed into a masterpiece of art.

Behind the scenes, there are certainly some key people responsible for putting this event together: Madrina Ciano, Chair of the Event; Jennifer Knisbell, Co-Chair; Jan Miller, Sponsorship Chair; Pensacola Opera staff members; Chandra McKern, General Director; Corey McKern, Artistic Director; Joe Rich Beauty, makeup; Opera Costumes designed by Wardrobe Witchery and Wigs designed by Brittany Rappise. All of which have pulled together to create a top-notch event that will undoubtedly have the community talking long after the curtain call. Although the unique experience is reason enough to get excited about Rock the Runway, it’s also all for a great cause. All proceeds will directly support professional opera performances and educational programs that enrich the culture of the Pensacola community. So mark those calendars! Tickets are sure to sell out fast for this can't-miss fashion theater celebration bringing together the best of the worlds of opera, rock, and style. It's time to Rock the Runway, Pensacola style!

ot all heroes wear capes, some wear fabulous heels. Being a woman can be a difficult job. We are often expected to be everything to everyone. Work hard to reach your full potential in your career field, but also raise a family in-between. Make sure you meet all of your deadlines at work but also bake a casserole and join a book club. While it may seem overwhelming to “do it all,” there are a few local women who seem to have it figured out. And, for that, they are my heroes; or should I say heroines. Malala Fund said, “I want every girl to know that her voice can change the world.” This group of women are bravely climbing to the top and making a difference in the lives of those around them. In these articles, we are raising a glass to some amazing women along the Gulf Coast. As successful businesswomen and entrepreneurs, these women are the examples that we need for our youth. Some are mothers, some are bosses, some are adventurous, some lead quietly from the sidelines, but there is one thing they all have in common — they are heroines. The leaders, the path blazers, the extraordinary women that always go a step above the rest. A heroine is defined as a woman admired or idealized for her courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. These fearless women are that and more. 27

Dr. Rameca Vincent Leary Director of Community and Special Initiatives, Pensacola State College Executive Producer/Host, WSRE-TV Gulf Breeze, FL
photography provided by: Dr. Rameca Vincent Leary
D
r. Rameca Vincent Leary has led a life filled with wanderlust and ambition. Born in Bremerton, Washington, to a Navy family, Dr. Rameca traveled across the country throughout her childhood. Some of her fondest early memories include days spent picking fresh tropical fruit in her Honolulu neighborhood. After subsequent stops in Charleston, South Carolina, and other destinations courtesy of her father’s 31-year Naval career, Dr. Rameca settled down in Gulf Breeze, Florida. However, this scholar and educator has never been one to sit still for long. Dr. Rameca took an early interest in journalism. Propelled by both a childhood shy streak and an inner fire, she set out to make her voice heard. She began reporting for her high school paper before being appointed drum major of the marching band. In college, Dr. Rameca wasted no time getting hands-on media experience through an internship at Charleston’s WCSC-TV Channel 5. She steadily took on more responsibility as an editor, producer, and overnight anchor. Her drive eventually earned her a full-time reporter/anchor role, then afternoon anchor and public affairs director positions. After more than a decade making Charleston headlines, Dr. Rameca brought her talents to academia. She served as a Recruiter and Assistant Recruiting Director at South Carolina’s Trident Technical College for 10 years. In 2014, Florida’s Pensacola State College recruited Dr. Rameca to teach communication courses. She was later hired as full-time tenure track faculty in the Business Department. She now serves as Director of Community and Special Initiatives, reporting directly to Dr. Ed Meadows, President. These days, Dr. Rameca juggles teaching, directing special programs for the President’s office, and hosting two public access shows — “Connecting the Community” and “Pensacola State Today.” She also continues giving back to the Florida Panhandle community through board service and volunteering. However, Dr. Rameca counts a past nonprofit called Project Cool Breeze as her proudest achievement. While working in Charleston, she co-founded the initiative with friend and South Carolina politician Wendell Gilliard. For more than 15 years, Project Cool Breeze has provided air conditioners, fans, and heating assistance to senior citizens in need. Their work even attracted President Obama’s attention in 2012! Through it all, Dr. Rameca credits her mother, Jane, as her biggest inspiration. She describes Jane as a constant source of wisdom and guidance. Dr. Rameca also dedicated her awardwinning doctoral dissertation on colorism (intraracial discrimination) to her mom.
When asked what advice she would give her 20-year-old self, Dr. Rameca said, “Look in the mirror and examine yourself. Do you like what you see? Life is short. Stay strong. Yes, there will be bumps in the road, but you can overcome any obstacle. Be mindful of those who surround you. Proceed with wisdom and discernment. You may have to sever some relationships, but that is okay. Acquaintances may come and go, but a true friend is worth his or her weight in gold. Exercise patience. Remember that a listening ear is to be treasured. In all things, put God first, and He will order your steps.” Dr. Rameca’s students and colleagues speak highly of her leadership and guidance. She focuses on uplifting others. Dr. Rameca spearheads fundraising campaigns to help students in need and serves as their “biggest cheerleader,” offering encouragement inside and outside the classroom. Her self-professed mission is to approach each day seeking ways to reach beyond herself and brighten someone else’s life. So what does the future look like for this ambitious woman? Dr. Rameca plans to continue encouraging others in her college, community, and beyond. She starts each day by asking herself, “What can I do to bring sunshine to someone’s life?” With her vivacious spirit and passion for helping, Dr. Rameca’s forecast remains bright. Expect this remarkable woman to keep making waves!

T
he Rev. Clelia Pinza Garrity’s remarkable life has been defined by her compassion for others and heartfelt service. Born in New York City, Clelia now calls Ft. Walton Beach, Florida, home. She serves as Associate for Community Engagement & Clinical Pastoral Care at St. Simon’s on the Sound Episcopal Church, ministering to parishioners with warmth and spiritual guidance. Clelia’s dedication to service began early. Extensive travels exposed her to different cultures worldwide, teaching valuable lessons about people’s shared humanity despite economic differences. In the last 25 years, stints working in Haiti, Zambia, and South Africa impressed upon Clelia the dignity and resilience of people facing extreme hardship. Though her life has certainly seen stress, the courage and grace shown by those less fortunate provided perspective and reinforced Clelia’s belief that love and understanding empower change. This belief fueled her advocacy work with vulnerable groups. In the 1990s, Clelia worked on projects aiding those impacted by HIV/AIDS and victims of domestic violence and sex trafficking. Deeply affected by the prevalence of childhood sexual abuse, she spearheaded the development of the Nye County Child Advocacy Center while in Nevada, providing critical services to more than 75 abused children in its inaugural year. Her concern for women and families also led her to establish a medical clinic to serve people with HIV/AIDS along the Mexican border.
Clelia’s decades-long dedication to mission work overseas and with marginalized communities in the U.S. stems from her strong Christian faith. Feeling God’s presence from a young age, she has followed His light through a vocation defined by compassionate service. In addition to her parish duties, Clelia serves as Missioner for Global Mission Advocacy in the Episcopal Diocese of the Central Gulf Coast. She also volunteers as a hospital chaplain, offering counseling and comfort to those facing illness, trauma, and grief. When asked who she most admires, Clelia names all women who persevere in caring for their families despite formidable obstacles like poverty, war, and displacement. To Clelia, love is the most potent force for change. Her decades ministering to those society often ignores has reaffirmed that peace stems from compassion. Though privilege has afforded Clelia chances to improve lives worldwide, she remains humbled by the lessons in courage and resilience shown by those less fortunate. In reflecting on her work, Clelia emphasizes the importance of patience, stillness, and finding unity through love instead of discord. Her life story stands as a testament to how one person’s faith and compassion can ignite monumental change.

Jill Hubbs
General Manager of PBS, WSRE Public Television Pensacola, FL
photography by: Kristina Wright

hen you ask Jill Hubbs where she’s from, get ready for a story! Born in Maryland while her Navy pilot father was stationed there, by the time Jill was a toddler her family embarked on a cross-country tour of California as her dad was transferred from base to base. Finally settling back to the Florida Panhandle as a teen in her mother’s hometown of Pensacola, Jill proudly calls herself a “Pensacola girl.” With deep generational roots in the Gulf Coast region dating back nearly 150 years ago when her Norwegian ancestors first immigrated to Florida, it’s no wonder Pensacola feels like home for this friendly, down-to-earth woman. Jill lights up recalling stories her grandmother shared about growing up in Pensacola at the turn of the century and memories of her Uncle Reinhardt Holm serving as the city’s mayor in the late 1960s. After earning her teaching degrees from Pensacola Junior College and the University of West Florida, Jill spent 15 years inspiring children in elementary school classrooms before joining WSRE Public Television 27 years ago. Serving first as Director of Educational Outreach, Jill has been General Manager of Pensacola’s PBS station for the past four years. Describing the incredible team she works with as “creative and dedicated,” under Jill’s leadership WSRE has produced award-winning local documentaries and offered educational programs for decades. Giving back to the community comes naturally for Jill. From serving on the Board of Veterans Memorial Park to establishing WSRE’s Imagination Station hands-on children’s
activity center enjoyed by more than 100,000 visitors, Jill’s kind heart and passion for teaching shines through in every project she tackles. While Jill has been influenced by strong, accomplished women throughout her career, she credits her resilient mother, Bereth, as the strongest role model in her life. Describing the hardships her mom overcame while remaining “strong, kind, loving, and positive,” Jill strives to emulate those traits and pass them along to her beloved grandchildren, Rex, Sally, and Becca, who she’s helping to raise. When asked about advice for her 20-year-old self, Jill stresses living life to the fullest and not sweating the small stuff. “Cherish friendships and family … believe in yourself!” Wise words from a woman speaking from experience. Calling her grandkids “my heart, my joy, my loves,” Jill beams with pride over their accomplishments and character. “Once a teacher, always a teacher” she laughs, thrilled to instill values and life lessons learned from her own loving parents. Retirement dreams include publishing children’s books and producing more documentaries on little-known history and unsung heroes – passions right up this storyteller’s alley! Describing the documentaries she directs as “stories that need to be told,” Jill has contributed 10 films to WSRE’s archives over the years with more in development. Clearly Jill has found her niche doing what she loves for the hometown community she loves even more. Pensacola is lucky to claim this warm-hearted woman as one of its own!

Maureen Bierman Director of Marketing and Communications, Step One Automotive Group Fort Walton Beach, FL

hen speaking with Maureen Bierman, the Director of Marketing and Communications for Step One Automotive Group, you immediately sense the grace and grit that has fueled her success. Currently residing in Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Maureen grew up in New York City where her mother pursued her opera singing dreams. Modeling paid the bills and put food on the table until she met and married Maureen’s father. After he passed away unexpectedly, Maureen’s mother showed enormous strength by putting herself through law school while raising three children on her own. “I strive to be like her every day,” Maureen says when asked about the incredible woman who inspired her journey. “She never complained or had a bad word to say about anyone.” Maureen also recalls the groundbreaking footsteps of her aunt, who forged her way as a career woman when sexism in the 60’s workplace was not only tolerated but expected. “She had to deal with things that women today couldn’t even imagine. But she pushed through it all and succeeded at the things that were important to her and showed them all.” The thread of feminine perseverance and grace is woven tightly throughout Maureen’s life, helping shape her into the thoughtful, driven leader she is today. When asked what motivates her continued success, Maureen references the deep fulfillment she finds in helping others. “There is no better feeling in the world than making an impact
in someone’s life. It can be as simple as a kind word or helping them through a tough time, but it is as rewarding for me as it is for them.” This sincere desire to lift others is what Maureen wants women starting their careers today to know above all else. “Don’t worry about what other people think. Stand your ground, you may not always be right, but you have the right to speak out. Don’t take things so personally. When someone lashes out at you or is unkind to you, it says nothing about you and everything about them.” She firmly believes that confidence and self-worth set the trajectory for success and encourages women not to allow anyone else to determine their value or potential. “You alone determine your worth, your success, your life. There isn’t anything you cannot do if you set your mind to it.” When sharing her proudest accomplishments, Maureen looks forward. “I think my proudest accomplishment is still yet to come!” This orientation toward the future is what enables both her continued success and impact through Step One Automotive Group. “I could not have done it without the support that Step One Automotive Group brings to this community. They are truly committed to leaving a legacy in the communities we
serve, and we plan to continue for many years to come.” Part of that legacy centers on mentoring future female leaders who she works with at Step One Automotive Group and in the community even as she continues leading the marketing strategy for one of the nation’s fastest growing auto groups. “I have always tried to help each of [the ladies I mentor] find what will truly fulfill them in the future, and sometimes that may not be here with us, it may be somewhere else where they find what really fulfills them. But either way, I support that and try to help them find their direction.” Maureen stands as a shining example of the right way to use her influence to lift others toward their highest potential even as she charges toward her own.

Mary Howe
Registered Nurse, Deja You Medical Navarre, FL
photography provided by: Mary Howe
M
ary Howe found her calling to serve early in life. Growing up in a long line of military leaders, including her grandfather and father, Mary felt destined to continue her family’s legacy of service and leadership. When she came of age, Mary enlisted in the Air Force, becoming an aerial gunner. For eight years, she carried out missions to keep America safe, inspired by her father’s harrowing experience fighting for his life in Somalia in 1993. “All of the experiences I had in the military are truly hard to beat. I remember landing after my checkride (qualification) to become an aerial gunner. I experienced my first inflight emergency when a hydraulic system actually blew up on the plane (that’s what powers the flight controls and landing gear). The lines of hydraulic fluid blew off the manifold to the guns and shot 3100 psi all over the gun deck. I was too young and inexperienced to really understand what was going on. We came in for an emergency landing, it felt like within 10 minutes we were off the range and on the ground. We left the aircraft, and I still had work to do on the gun equipment. My instructor took me to another plane with nothing but a flashlight to navigate me through the middle of the night workload. We came into debrief, and I was unsure if I would pass the test to become an aerial gunner. Then the instructor pulled out my 4v SOS patch. The feeling that I finally made it was just incredible and unforgettable. Mission: accomplished!”
www.ScarlettMag.com
Though rewarding, military life also came with sacrifices for Mary. Long shifts prevented her from spending precious time with her infant daughter. Seeking a way to continue serving while being present for her child, Mary discovered a new path: nursing. She landed a job in the neonatal intensive care unit, drawn to help fragile newborns fighting for their lives. However, the emotional toll of the work weighed on Mary as a new mom. Once again, she sought a way to align career and family. A patient herself at a local medical spa, Mary noticed an open position that captured her interest. The schedule provided more work-life balance while allowing Mary to utilize her medical skills to help others. She soon realized that in the world of aesthetic medicine, she could uniquely touch lives by boosting outer and inner confidence. Having contended with adult acne herself following pregnancy, Mary connected with patients struggling with skin issues. She became a trusted advisor on medical-grade products and procedures like microneedling, empowering people to feel comfortable in their own skin. Watching patient after patient beam with newfound confidence kept Mary feeling fulfilled in her work. Over the years, Mary found inspiration in her boss and mentor, an incredible woman and the owner of Deja You Medical, Kris Pritchard, whom she credits with teaching invaluable lessons around confidence, leadership, and faith. Witnessing Kris’s genuine care for employees, patients, and community showed Mary that excellent leadership stems from a drive to uplift others. Looking ahead, supporting fellow military families remains Mary’s passion. She keenly understands the innumerable personal sacrifices made by those on the home front. By continuing to honor these unsung heroes through her personal and professional efforts, Mary carries out her commitment to service started all those years ago. Now, Mary strives to embolden the next generation of leaders. She hopes that through demonstrating values like tireless dedication, courage, and compassion, she can motivate others to fearlessly pursue their purpose. In her own words, “When people witness my leadership in the industry, community or otherwise, I want them to feel called to step up and go after their dreams.” Because for trailblazers like Mary, the quest to serve never really ends. New challenges appear on the horizon, but with grit and vision, she’ll continue responding to the call, moving forward intrepidly.

A.2 Few Good Men.4
en — can’t live with them, can’t live without them. But luckily we’ve found a few good men! Leaders, mentors, partners, gentlemen. There are approximately 161.6 million men in the United States. That’s a big number, but all we need is a few good men to make a difference. We are lucky that the Gulf Coast has as many good men as they do palm trees. Our area is booming with strong male role models helping to lead the way and to guide the younger generations down the right path. These men are out there in our community making a real difference. They are running businesses, they are volunteering, they are working at the local nonprofits, they are fathers, and they are husbands. These men are juggling all of these jobs and are doing it with style and grace. Being a good man is more than just following the rules, it’s being the individual who goes above and beyond. It’s being the man who isn’t afraid to stand up for what is right. A truly good man is one whose traits perfectly balance out. He is both strong and sensitive, a leader but can also take direction. A good man is someone you can look up to.

Marty Stanovich President and CEO, First Tee Gulf Coast Pensacola, FL
photography provided by: Marty Stanovich
M
arty Stanovich is a proud native of Pensacola, Florida, having returned to his hometown in the mid-1990s after living in Tallahassee and New Orleans for a time. Now, he serves as President and CEO of First Tee Gulf Coast, a nonprofit that teaches golf skills and life skills to youth ages 5-18 across eight counties in Northwest Florida and South Alabama. The organization’s mission is to empower kids, regardless of their ability to pay. Outside of his role with First Tee Gulf Coast, Marty is heavily involved in the Pensacola community. He serves as a Governor Emeritus of Pensacola State College and emcees dozens of charitable events every year. Marty’s first foray into community service was with the American Lung Association, volunteering and serving on their Board after losing his father to lung cancer at age 11. This tragic event sparked a lifelong passion for supporting local nonprofits. Marty spent more than a decade teaching history and humanities at Pensacola State College, developing a deep appreciation for the transformative work done by the school’s faculty, staff, and foundation. He remains dedicated to giving back to the college that gave so much to him and his students. When asked what advice he would give his 20-year-old self, Marty stresses the importance of patience, hard work, and follow-through. He believes strongly that nothing good is achieved without perseverance. Marty also highlights the significance of fully committing to everything one takes on in life. Of all his accomplishments, Marty is proudest of his work acquiring, renovating, and redeveloping the historic 1958 Goofy Golf facility in Warrington. Transforming this beloved local landmark into a comprehensive golf and life skills training facility for local youth was an enormous challenge. He could never have done it alone, with seemingly everyone in the community stepping up to help fund, build, and support the massive project. Seven years later, the facility is owned debt-free by First Tee Gulf Coast and serves as a community hub. Marty credits his late mother, who became a widow unexpectedly early in life, as his greatest female influence. With only a high school education, she worked long hours on her feet for low wages to support Marty after his father’s passing. Though they struggled financially, she always made sure he had what he needed to thrive in school, sports, and life. Marty feels blessed to have had 45 wonderful years with his hardworking and loving mother. www.ScarlettMag.com
After nearly 30 years participating in Pensacola’s vibrant nonprofit community, Marty has been overwhelmed at times by the number of charitable events and causes. But it’s also been a blessing to witness the incredible generosity and passion for service among his fellow residents. He still has big dreams for First Tee Gulf Coast and Pensacola State College and plans to continue striving to make the community better for many years to come. Marty believes surrounding himself with talented, dedicated women has been key to his success. A friend once visited his office and was blown away by his all-female leadership team, complimenting their smarts and skills. Marty humbly responded that he was the lucky one to work with such an incredible group united by a commitment to the greater good. While he serves as ringmaster, Marty credits his staff for the achievements of their little corner of life’s circus.

hip W. Simmons was born on a Navy base in Keflavik, Iceland, but has called Pensacola, Florida, his hometown for more than 50 years. Chip has dedicated his life to law enforcement, spending 29 years with the Pensacola Police Department followed by nine years at the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office. He has served proudly as both Pensacola’s Police Chief and now as Escambia County’s Sheriff. From an early age, Chip was inspired to pursue law enforcement as a career after admiring the brave men and women who came before him in uniform. His father reinforced the idea that service is a noble calling. As Sheriff, the advice Chip would give his younger self is to make all decisions through the lenses of common sense and decency. If one uses those virtues to guide choices, success will follow. Of all his accomplishments, Chip is most proud of the men his two grown sons have become and the role his guidance played. Professionally, being elected by the residents of Escambia County to serve as their Sheriff is his greatest achievement. Knowing the community has put their faith and safety in his hands is a responsibility he takes incredibly seriously. The most influential woman in Chip’s life was his mother, Vivian. She taught him that kindness is not weakness, strength of character and integrity build trust, and all three foster positive community relationships. His approach to community engagement as Sheriff reflects those early lessons in forming bonds across Escambia County. Since taking office, Chip has brought community involvement to unprecedented levels. His award-winning “Sheriff’s Blazer Academy” mentoring program was named Florida’s “Program of the Year” for fostering positive relationships between youth and law enforcement. He also created “Sheriff’s Movie Nights” to engage residents in informal settings and build trust. Chip vows to continue cultivating those community partnerships by supporting a highly trained, professional staff dedicated to balancing compassion and justice. The Sheriff beams with pride talking about the growth and accomplishments of those under his command. By promoting an encouraging, supportive environment, he brings out the best in his team. Their success stories and acts of bravery symbolize the culture of courtesy, integrity, and professionalism Chip works to instill in every member of the force.
Whether individually or together, the staff of the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office upholds those core values. Chip considers his role in developing Deputies to reach their full potential just as much an accomplishment as any of his own merits or awards. He leads by example — staying actively engaged with the community, empowering his staff, and always guided by wisdom passed down from his earliest role models. Simmons has woven all those principles into the fabric of the Escambia County law enforcement identity.

n the heart of Pensacola, Florida, there's a vibrant space where creativity takes center stage, and where children can discover the magic of the performing arts. Mixon Magic Performing Arts (MMPA) is not just a studio; it's a haven for budding talents, a place where dreams are nurtured, and confidence is cultivated. Founded by Emily Mixon, a Pensacola native with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theater from The Boston Conservatory, MMPA is a passion project inspired by Emily's journey and her desire to share the transformative power of the arts. Emily's rich background includes performances at renowned venues, directing and choreographing productions, and teaching in various capacities. Beginning her artistic journey at the age of 3, she has since studied acting, voice, piano, flute, and dance with institutions like Kaleidoscope & Ballet Pensacola. Emily has graced regional stages, including Pensacola Little Theatre, Pensacola State College, University of West Florida, and Tulane University's Summer Lyric Theatre. She has held many notable roles that include “Queenie” in The Wild Party at the Boston Conservatory and “Mrs. White” in Clue: On Stage. But Emily's dedication extends well beyond the stage; she served as a resident choreographer for Pensacola Children’s Chorus, directed and choreographed productions, and contributed significantly to arts education at various institutions, earning accolades for her impactful teaching at District One and Florida State Thespian Festivals. The spark for Mixon Magic was ignited in 2020 during the pandemic when Emily crafted a fine arts curriculum for her nephews, infusing acting, singing, and movement into their daily lives. The success of this grassroots
production led Emily to the realization that this was something she could offer to children of all ages, and thus, Mixon Magic Performing Arts was born. Emily, along with her mother Donna Mixon, Business Manager and Instructor at MMPA — and award-winning local performer in her own right, emphasizes building personal and genuine relationships with students and families. “I strongly believe in our ‘boutique’ approach of developing strong personal and genuine relationships with our students and families.” The studio is a space where everyone is welcome, regardless of their experience level. Emily believes that every child is born with innate gifts, and the goal at MMPA is to nurture those talents and instill confidence in a fun, celebratory atmosphere. Mixon Magic offers a diverse range of classes for ages 3 to 18, including a Mommy & Me program called Showbizz Tots. From Ballet and Tap to Broadway, Voice, Acting, Audition Coaching, Acro Dance, and the wildly popular Showstoppers class (to name a few), there's something for every budding artist. The studio's unique approach involves creating a supportive environment where personalized instruction and consistent connection with students foster excellence and creativity, “including one on one intentional teaching within the large class setting. This enables each student to thrive on the ‘fiercest’ level they’re at, regardless of skill or experience. Through passionate teaching and a developed trust, we find what motivates our students to succeed, pull from that creative energy, and VOILA! We create MAGIC!” At Mixon Magic, the journey of young artists is celebrated through performances, recitals, and showcases. Parent Observation Week in December and the Spring Parent and Family Showcase provide opportunities for students to shine and share their newfound skills with their loved ones and the community. 43
Looking ahead, Emily envisions a future where Mixon Magic has its own dedicated space, accommodating a growing community of young artists. Emily explains, “We are beyond grateful to the Ritz Family at Tower East Group for giving us wings as a new business back in 2020, and supporting us every step along the way! However, to eventually have a space that will accommodate our current weekly class load along with new and varied programming is the ultimate goal for me! I know that might be far down the road, but I will always aim for the fiercest and boldest version of myself and my business!” In Pensacola, Mixon Magic Performing Arts isn't just a studio; it's a community where dreams are nurtured, confidence is built, and magic happens every day. If you're looking for a place where your child's creativity can soar, Mixon Magic is the stage where it all begins.

hen heading to the theatre, dressing appropriately for the occasion enhances the experience. Theatres range in their attire expectations from formal wear to smart casual. Knowing what’s suitable allows you to plan your outfit accordingly and feel confident you’ll fit right in. This guide covers the fashion do’s and don'ts for three common theatre dress codes — formal, dressy, and casual.
3 L.4evels of Dress Cod.3e Formal Theatre Attire
If attending the opera, ballet, or a high-end Broadway production, formal attire is required. This signals respect for the performers while contributing to the sophisticated ambiance. For women, opt for an evening gown, a cocktail dress, or dressy separates like a skirt or pants with an elegant top and a blazer or dressy sweater. Fabrics like satin, chiffon, lace, or velvet paired with heels and dressy jewelry create a suitably polished impression. Strive for an outfit showing thoughtfulness and occasion-appropriate style.
Dressy, But Not Formal Theatre Attire
Many theatres request patrons dress nicely but don’t mandate strict formality. This leaves room for stylishly interpreting the dress code based on your personal taste. For women, wear a little black dress, a dressy skirt, or pants with a blouse or sweater. Pair it with heeled booties, kitten heels, or wedge sandals. You might accessorize with a scarf or statement necklace. The vibe remains classy versus casual. The range of fabrics and colors suitable are broader than ultra-formal: knits, leather, jewel-toned hues, metallics. Highend denim works for some casual-leaning theatres if paired intentionally.
Casual Theatre Attire
Small, intimate venues often have no dress requirements. Their emphasis is on the art rather than social polish. For women, dark jeans, leggings, or slacks with sweaters, blouses, or nicer tees are welcome. Ankle booties, ballet flats, low wedges or Oxfords are comfortable options needing little break-in time. You might layer on a cardigan or blazer for warmth and to signal intent to dress your best within a casual vein. Dressing the part enhances any theatre visit while respecting their traditions. Now you’re primed for choosing an outfit suited to three common dress code levels, from formal gowns to smart jeans, you can identify what works where and focus on enjoying the show.

aking up with a pounding headache, queasy stomach, and foggy memory after a night out can leave anyone longing for relief. As unpleasant as hangovers feel, they don’t have to ruin your whole next day. Arm yourself with some handy remedies to ease the alcohol-induced misery. With a little TLC, you’ll bounce back in no time. If you’ve been there before, you know how it goes — one drink leads to the next and before you know it, you’ve tipped way past your limit. Hangovers are caused by alcohol dehydrating the body and irritating the stomach. While there’s no true “cure” except time, you can use these research-backed tricks to tackle common symptoms and feel more human again.
www.ScarlettMag.com
Stay Hydrated — And We Mean REALLY Hydrated
Alcohol is a diuretic, so it makes you pee out more fluids than you take in. Dehydration is a huge hangover culprit. Fight back by drinking a full glass of water between each alcoholic beverage. Keep chugging H2O before bed and when you wake up parched. Getting adequately hydrated will give you more energy and relieve headaches.
Take It Easy With Pain Relievers
Overdoing pain meds on an upset stomach can make things worse. Start with a buffer like Tums, or antacids with calcium or magnesium, which may ease that screaming headache. Next opt for no more than the recommended dose of acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Lastly, drink some peppermint or ginger tea to settle your stomach. The soothing effects will help you keep meds down.
Load Up On Electrolytes
Along with water, alcohol zaps electrolytes — like potassium and sodium — that are vital for proper nerve and muscle function. Stock up on coconut water, fruit juices or sports drinks. Broths and soups replenish sodium levels too. Bananas and avocados also pack potassium and won’t upset your stomach. Getting these nutrients back on track will boost energy fast.
Eat Smart — Carefully
Greasy meals may sound tempting initially, but they’ll just aggravate stomach woes. Go for bland bites easy on digestion like crackers, rice, toast, or plain oatmeal. Add banana slices or avocado for potassium. If your hangover comes with nausea or vomiting, stick to small sips of clear broth or electrolyte drinks every 5-10 minutes until your stomach settles. Easing back into eating avoids further GI upset.
Sleep It Off
Alcohol disrupts sleep cycles, so you won’t rest properly after drinking. Prioritize a mid-morning nap after replenishing fluids and electrolytes. Allow 1-2 hours for the most reparative benefits. You’ll awaken feeling refreshed. Some light yoga stretches beforehand can also relieve muscle tension and hit your reset button. While no one intends to have a rough morning after, having a plan takes the misery out of hangovers. With these simple — yet effective — tricks, you’ll get back on your feet in no time!

Care 101 written by: Molly Rivers

A
s we all know, ladies, cashmere is one of the most luxurious and coveted fabrics for sweaters, scarves, and gloves to name a few. But it does require a bit of special care to keep your cashmere pieces looking their best. Check out these tips and techniques for storing, washing, and maintaining cashmere so your loved pieces are looking good for years to come.
Storage Tips
The way you store cashmere between wears plays an important role in keeping the fibers from breaking down over time. Always store cashmere folded versus hanging, as the weight of gravity can pull at the fibers and cause misshaping. Keep cashmere in a breathable garment or sweater bag, not an airtight plastic container or bag. This prevents moisture from being trapped and deteriorating the cashmere. Maintain the shape by folding intricately along existing seams or using acidfree tissue paper inside folds and crevices. Store in cool, dry spaces away from direct light.
Washing & Drying
It’s best to hand-wash cashmere as often as possible, especially for delicate accessories like gloves and scarves. Use cool or lukewarm water and a gentle detergent made specifically for delicates and cashmere. Never use hot water or regular detergent. Soak the item first to allow the detergent to fully penetrate the fibers, then gently squeeze — never twist, wring, or scrub, and rinse thoroughly with cool water. For cashmere sweaters and other garments, turning them inside out prior to hand-washing preserves the outer appearance. Using a mesh garment bag for the washing machine is definitely an option if it’s done gently on the delicate cycle.
Dealing with Pills
Those pesky little balls that tend to accumulate on cashmere are called “pills.” As tempting as it may be, never use a traditional fabric shaver tool to remove pills. The sharp blades can do more harm than good. Instead, use a special cashmere comb, sweater stone, or pill razor. Gently brush the tool over the fabric in different directions to loosen and catch pills. Remove any pills and continue brushing until the surface is smooth again. Avoid over-brushing to prevent overly thinning the fibers.
Maintaining Appearance
There are also a few extra tips for keeping cashmere looking its best. Avoid contact with jewelry and hardware like zippers and buttons that could snag the delicate fabric. If you do get a pull or catch in the fibers, immediately and gently tweak the fabric back into place for the best damage-control results. You can also gently use a cashmere comb to restore fluffiness if items become matted or compressed. With some special attention and TLC, your cashmere pieces will maintain their luxurious softness and beautiful appearance for years!
Avoid the dryer whenever possible as exposing cashmere to high heat can cause irreversible damage to the delicate fibers. Instead, lay flat on top of a towel to soak up moisture, then reshape and air dry flat.

Preparing Your Home for a Successful Sale Essential Tips for Sellers with Special Guest Writer
Jessica Duncan

elling your home is a significant endeavor, and how you prepare your property can significantly influence the sale outcome. These essential tips will guide you in getting your property in top condition for a successful sale.
Declutter and Depersonalize: Decluttering
is the first step in preparing your home for sale. Go through each room systematically and remove items that are not essential. Clear off countertops, pack away excess furniture, and minimize knickknacks. Don’t forget to remove the magnets from the refrigerator. Buyers want to envision their lives in the space, so a clean, neutral backdrop is crucial.
Deep Clean: A clean home is inviting and gives the impression that the property has been wellmaintained. Consider hiring professional cleaners for a deep clean that includes carpets, windows, appliances, and all the nooks and crannies. Baseboards, doors, and trim around the doors are essential areas not to miss. A sparkling, clean home will leave a positive impression on potential buyers. Make Necessary Repairs:
Walk through your home with a critical eye and address any maintenance issues. Fix leaky faucets, repair peeling paint, and replace broken fixtures. Unresolved problems can discourage potential buyers and lead to lower offers. You may consider having a home inspection to prevent surprises in repair costs once you are under contract. Tackling these issues before listing your home will show buyers that your property is well cared for.
Enhance Curb Appeal: The
exterior of your home is the first thing buyers see. Boost curb appeal by trimming bushes, mowing the lawn, and adding fresh mulch to flower beds. Consider giving your front door a fresh coat of paint and ensuring the exterior is well-lit and welcoming. www.ScarlettMag.com
Stage Your Home: Staging
can significantly affect how buyers perceive your space. It helps them visualize the full potential of your home. Consider rearranging furniture, adding decorative elements, and ensuring each room has a clear purpose. Staging can create an emotional connection with potential buyers.
Neutralize Paint Colors:
While bold or unique paint colors may appeal to you, they may not resonate with every buyer. Repaint rooms in neutral shades to create a clean and neutral canvas for buyers. This allows them to imagine how they would decorate the space according to their preferences.
Maximize Natural Light:
Well-lit spaces appear larger and more inviting. Open blinds and curtains to let in as much natural light as possible. Clean windows and make sure they are free of obstructions. Bright and airy rooms are more appealing to buyers.
Depersonalize the Space:
Remove family photos, personal memorabilia, and religious or political items. The goal is to create a neutral environment where buyers can project their own lives. A depersonalized space allows them to see themselves living in your home.
Address Odors: Unpleasant
odors can be a deal-breaker for potential buyers. Pay special attention to eliminating pet odors, cooking smells, and mustiness. Be careful when considering using air fresheners. Strong smells may appear to be your attempt to cover up other odors. Clean is always the best smell!
Highlight Key Features:
Every home has unique selling points, whether it’s a stunning fireplace, a spacious primary suite, or a breathtaking view. Ensure these features are showcased and that they are clean, well-maintained, and the room’s focal point. 59
Create a Welcoming Entrance: Your home’s entryway sets the tone for the entire showing. Make sure it’s clean, clutter-free, and inviting. A fresh doormat, potted plants, and a well-maintained front door can make a positive first impression. Set the Right Price: One of the most critical aspects of selling your home is pricing it correctly. I work closely with our clients to determine an accurate listing price. I share market analysis and consider recent comparable sales in your area to help you reach a competitive price to attract potential buyers. Preparing your home for sale is essential in ensuring a successful and profitable transaction. By following these tips and collaborating with an experienced real estate agent, you can maximize your chances of attracting potential buyers and securing a great deal. If you would like more tips on preparing your home, call me to schedule more tailored advice.

Finding Your

s women, having a strong support system we can lean on during both good times and bad is so important. But building and maintaining female friendships gets harder as we get older. Between work, family obligations, and just dealing with life's curveballs, carving out quality time to nurture old friendships or form new ones often falls by the wayside. However, surrounding ourselves with a tribe of women who lift us up, make us laugh till we cry, and have our backs during tough times is one of the best things we can do for our overall health and well-being. The sense of community and sisterhood a strong circle of girlfriends can provide helps beat stress, boosts self-confidence, and makes life's journey that much smoother. So how do we go about finding “our people” — those special girlfriends who click with us and just make us feel good? Here are some tips:
65
Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone
Be open to connecting with women of different backgrounds, ages, and life experiences than your own. Stepping outside your usual social bubbles can introduce you to some amazing friend prospects you may have otherwise overlooked.
Pursue Your Passions
When you engage in activities you genuinely enjoy, you automatically have something substantial in common with the other people taking part. So join that book club, take that Italian cooking class, start training for races with a local running group. Pursuing your passions puts you in proximity to women with shared interests — the foundation of many solid friendships!
www.ScarlettMag.com
Don’t Be Afraid To Make The First Move
If you meet a woman you think you might click with, don't be shy about suggesting getting together for coffee or a drink. The worst that can happen is she'll decline. And the best that can happen is discovering a wonderful new girlfriend!
Set Friend Dates
Once the initial connection is made, be deliberate about setting quality time with your new friend, just like you would for other important people in your life. Whether it’s a girlfriend lunch date every month or Saturday morning walks together — protect that time in your calendar.
Show Up Authentically
The best way to attract and nurture fulfilling, lasting female friendships is to simply be your genuine self. Rather than trying to impress, just be real about what’s going on in your life — the highlights and the struggles. Lifting the “I have it all together” mask draws others to open up too and bonds you on a deeper level. By being open, pursuing your passions, and making female friendship a priority, you can curate a tribe of vibrant girlfriends who inspire you, comfort you, and share all the magical ups and downs of being a woman. Our circles of sisterhood not only make our lives richer — they make us better humans.

Hoppin'
John
Hoppin' John are a traditional savory Southern dish often eaten on New Year's Day for good luck and prosperity. The exact origins of Hoppin' John are a bit murky, but most food historians point to West African and Caribbean influence. The key ingredients of rice, black-eyed peas, onions, and pork were agricultural staples in many parts of West Africa. The dish may have been brought over by enslaved West Africans and transformed by Southern ingredients and tastes. Whatever the roots, Hoppin' John now feel distinctly Southern and are full of rich Creole and Cajun flavor. There are many different variations of this delicious dish — here’s our take on a simple version that everyone can enjoy as is, or use as a base to add to and make their own!

s an area so close to New Orleans, the Gulf Coast is one that embraces Mardi Gras with enthusiasm — and loads of beads. Mobile and Pensacola may be known for their local festivities, but HarborWalk Village has hopped on the parade route with a celebration of fun for the entire family. For more than 13 years, HarborWalk Village has held a weekend of events, letting the good times roll. This year, the fun will be celebrated on Saturday, Feb. 10, 2024. “Mardi Gras on the Harbor is one of our favorite annual events,” says Devyn Espy, Events Manager for HarborWalk. “We are looking forward to welcoming everyone for this year’s festivities.” Saturday’s Mardi Gras Celebration and Parade is a family-friendly day filled with fun for everyone. Rolling through the Village at 4pm, the parade, featuring authentic Mardi Gras floats, brings this annual celebration at HarborWalk Village to life. Beads will fill the air as they are tossed by revelers, and Fais Do-Do will be setting the mood with live Cajun music on the Main Stage. The day also features face painting and a stilt-walking court jester. If you are looking to be a part of the Mardi Gras experience, gather a krewe to ride in a float during the parade! Float packages can be purchased for the Mardi Gras Celebration and include a party of up to eight people, face painting, a cooler packed with refreshments from event sponsors, and a float fully stocked with hundreds of beads to throw during the parade. Visit the HarborWalk Village Facebook Page for more information on parade participation. Sponsors for the weekend include CocaCola, Modelo, Miller Lite, White Claw and Elite Jeeps. hen’s the last time you did something special for YOU? Around the Emerald Coast we do have a few opportunities to get dressed up in our best and feel fierce but so often we forget to get photographs during the evening — especially ones we want to hang in our home as art! Thinking out of the box for the beach towns, Old Hollywood Glamour will showcase the sleek and sophisticated side with a retro look created right in the Davista Photography studio. Something completely opposite of the light and airy beach photos for this set ... think pearls and diamonds, floor length gowns, gloves, and maybe a glass of wine all while being photographed and focusing on your fabulousness. And of course the option for a more “after dark” look to add in glam and boudoir together. All that to leave you with art for your home and something to CELEBRATE the new year with ... beautiful images of you that you love.

osting a dinner party can seem daunting, but with some planning and preparation, you can pull it off without feeling stressed. The key is to keep things simple, get organized ahead of time, and don't be afraid to ask for help.
Plan a Simple Menu
When planning your menu, choose dishes you are comfortable making that have some components that can be prepared ahead of time. A menu like a hearty salad, lasagna or casserole, and garlic bread is easy to execute but still feels special. You can prep the salad veggies and dressing, assemble the lasagna, and bake the garlic bread before guests arrive.
Get Organized
Make detailed shopping lists organized by store section, marking items you already have. Do your major shopping a few days in advance, then do a final fresh ingredient run the day before the dinner. Take some time in the days leading up to tidy up and make room in your fridge and counters for prep work.
Set the Table Early
Set your table and place out serving dishes a day ahead or the morning of so that’s one less thing to worry about right before guests come. Place cards, if you are assigning seats, can also be done in advance.
Take Advantage of Time
Most dishes can be prepped to some degree earlier in the day or even the day before. Chop vegetables, cook meat for casseroles or pasta sauce, blend dressings and dips. The more you can knock out ahead of time, the more you can relax and enjoy the party.
Keep Dessert Simple
An elaborate multi-component dessert is likely to stress you out. Choose something simple like store-bought cookies or brownies, fruit and ice cream, or cheese and crackers. Your guests with full bellies will be just as satisfied with an easy sweet treat.
Make a Game Plan
Map out a schedule for yourself for the day of the dinner, noting what time you need to start cooking each element and when you need to have things done by. Share this schedule with anyone who has volunteered to help out with cooking or other tasks so you stay on track.
Accept Offers to Help
When guests ask if they can bring something or help out in some way, take them up on it! This is not the time to try to do everything yourself. Let them bring appetizers, wine, dessert, or even help cook.
Take Breathers When Needed
When party time hits, build in some moments to collect yourself when needed. Excuse yourself to the bathroom, get a glass of water, or take a few deep breaths. Your guests will be busy chatting and nibbling; they won't even notice. Don’t be afraid to take on the task of hosting a dinner party. If you can stay organized, keep the menu simple, and allow others to pitch in, you’ll be able to enjoy the fun evening it’s supposed to be!

Tiffany Orner Tiffany Orner is a two-time military spouse, a mother to three wonderful children, and a PROUD Air Force veteran. She is third generation military, second generation Air Force veteran. She is also, in her own words, “one hell of a work in progress.” PSA: I am not a collegiate scholar on all things military, but I do thoroughly know my shit. My thoughts are my own, and I am not speaking on behalf of any nonprofit business or organization. I’m here to be the advocate for others that I wish would have been available to me both during and after my service to our country.
@ProudAFVet
e made it! NOT just to 2024 but also to this beautiful day! So, let me ask you, “What are you going to do with it?” I want to encourage you to treat every morning of this year as a celebration. No, that’s too overwhelming. How about today and tomorrow morning just say, “Thank You.” I mean it. We must start to do two things, today. Get intentional AF in everything you do. Understand that your actions got you here. Right here, right now. What’s the saying? Something like, “where you are today is the summation of the work you put in 5 years ago.” Well, it’s time to do the work. Say, “Thank You.” No matter the amount of STUFF thrown in your direction, remember, there’s someone, somewhere that would absolutely LOVE to be in your shoes. Don’t believe me?! Come on over. I live about a ½ mile from a homeless facility, and I’ve had many conversations with these amazing humans, and they would LOVE to shovel the shit you’re complaining about. So, stop that and be thankful for the opportunity to deal with whatever it is. BAM! And just like that, your life will change. Drastically. I want to dedicate this article to my fellow military spouses. The women and men holding it all down as our military member does the damn thing. As we start 2024 and every day this year, I want my Florida Panhandle MilSpouses to understand one thing, Tiffany Orner has your 6. I am excited because since stepping onto the scene Q4 in 2022, I was determined to be the change needed for our local military community. As I run, full charge with high knees (gotta engage that core!) into 2024, I want MilSpouses to know it’s time. It’s time for our community to celebrate YOU. Not just through some shallow “please thank your spouse for all they do,” but by showing up. As I, Tiffany Leandra Orner, challenge our civilian sector, I want you to know that I have an agenda, and it starts with intentionally supporting our military spouses, our families, and ensuring our military community is fully supported, on BOTH sides of those gates. I am the Chairwoman of the Greater Fort Walton Beach Chamber Military Affairs Council and in 2024 my focus is “Beyond The Gate.” I am encouraging our military leaders to let us know what the needs are behind the gate, then challenging our community leaders to assist. Standby, beauties, as I lead the charge in military spouse un- or UNDER- employment opportunities for our military families and Jr. enlisted to get OFF base, out of the dorms, and active within our local communities. This is a large undertaking, but Isaiah 6:8 right — I’m ready. I don’t have all the answers, but what I do have is unwavering faith that I can positively change all of this for us. It might take me a minute, but again I repeat, Here I Am. Send Me! I’m ready and I won’t stop #UntilEVERYVeteranWantsForNothing.

A Tapestry of Creativity, Legacy, and Community Impact written by: Bobby Parker | photography provided by Stage Crafters Community Theatre

or more than half a century, Stage Crafters Community Theatre has woven a vibrant tapestry of artistic expression, community spirit, and creative opportunity in the heart of Fort Walton Beach. Established in 1972 by the dedicated actors of the Playground Players, Stage Crafters has not only endured the test of time but has flourished, earning the esteemed title of Florida's oldest,

continuously running, all-volunteer community theatre. Entering its 52nd season, Stage Crafters recently celebrated two significant milestones that underscore its profound impact on both the arts and the community. The theatre marked its 200th production, a testament to a legacy built on passion and dedication. Concurrently, the organization
achieved another milestone — the acquisition of its forever home on Robinwood Drive. These achievements stand as monuments to the unwavering support of the community, showcasing the enduring commitment of both volunteers and the citizens of Fort Walton Beach. The roots of Stage Crafters stretch back to its inaugural season,
featuring productions of "Everybody Loves Opal" and "Never Too Late." The early days were marked by rehearsals in a humble garage in the Cox parking lot on Racetrack Road or any available location where the troupe could gather to rehearse and construct sets. From these modest beginnings, Stage Crafters has evolved into a vital cultural institution, leaving an indelible mark on the lives of more than 12,000 volunteers. These individuals, who honed their skills within the theatre, discovered that the benefits extended far beyond the stage, enhancing their marketable life skills. The journey has not been without its challenges, but Stage Crafters has weathered them with resilience, emerging stronger and more vibrant. As Florida's oldest allvolunteer community theatre, the organization upholds a high standard of excellence, promoting creativity in theatre arts. It provides a platform for actors, directors, producers, and technical personnel to train and flourish, fostering artistic expression and community spirit through a diverse range of productions. These include school programs, oneact performances, and nonprofit fundraising events, collectively touching the lives of more than 350,000 audience members over the years. However, Stage Crafters' impact extends beyond the footlights. It resonates deeply within the community, serving as a supportive outlet for individuals to interact, learn, and practice the performing arts at no cost. This not-for-profit organization further extends its reach by supporting other civic

organizations and charitable needs, embodying the true spirit of community engagement. Contributing approximately $84,000 annually to local businesses and an additional $16,000+ to the City of Fort Walton Beach, Stage Crafters is a driving force in the local economy. The organization has also played a pivotal role in enhancing the Fort Walton Beach Civic Auditorium, their performance space, transforming it into a cultural hub for the community. As we applaud the actors taking their final bows at the culmination of each production, it becomes evident that Stage Crafters Community Theatre is more than a mere twohour performance — it's a cultural cornerstone, a haven for creativity, and a testament to the enduring power of volunteerism. In a world where arts organizations often come and go, Stage Crafters stands tall. For those seeking to be part of this extraordinary legacy, Stage Crafters encourages individuals with an interest in theatre, whether on or off the stage, to explore opportunities through internships and mentorships. These experiences not only provide creative outlets but may also count as school credits and satisfy community service requirements. As Stage Crafters tips its hat to the outstanding efforts of its members, the invitation is extended to all to be part of the future, where theatrical beauty, community expression, and a bright future await.
