inch me! I must be dreaming ... A whole year of Scarlett in the books. I can’t believe we are on our second Celebration issue, and boy do we have a lot to celebrate this year. The WOTY winners are being announced in this issue and what an amazing and deserving round up of fearless women. We are so honored to be able to recognize such a diverse group of individuals. As excited as we are to share the winners, we couldn’t spill all of the tea. We will only be announcing the top 3 up for The Woman of the Year. You all will have to wait until the end of February to find out who THE Woman of the Year is, so stay tuned. My very best friends did a shoot for one of our features, “Get BIRTHDAY BRUNCH Ready With Me.” It was so fun to include them in something I am so proud of. As the shoot was wrapping up, I jumped in a couple pictures just for us to always have. I cherish this group of women and in the spirit of celebration, I want to celebrate all friendships. Some days wouldn’t be possible without the love and support of our besties. So, cheers to our old and new friendships this year. We will be celebrating for the next two months, and we invite you to join us. Here at Scarlett we are celebrating the start of our SECOND year in publication (cue the confetti). I would like to personally celebrate our amazing team that brings you Scarlett. Especially our Creative Director, Jessica Graña. Her vision is incredible and she brings beauty and life to each and every page of our magazine. Without her, Scarlett would not be the same. We are so thrilled to start the new year off with you. Don’t forget to get social and follow us on Instagram — @ Scarlett.Magazine —and like us on Facebook — Scarlett Magazine — for all things Scarlett. We continue to bring you the latest in women’s fashion, beauty, home decor, lifestyle, and health because frankly, we know you give a damn!

eloved children’s author Roald Dahl once said, “And above all, watch with glittering eyes the whole world around you because the greatest secrets are always hidden in the most unlikely places. Those who don’t believe in magic will never find it.” The Luminary Entertainment Company, previously known as Aerial Events, lives to bring that glittering magic and hidden secrets to the hearts and eyes of every person who sees their shows. All of the performers at Luminary truly love what they do and truly love to bring their shows to life. Nothing makes them more excited than the opportunity to bring wonder to the world of their audience. More than a decade ago, founder Lydia Faith was introduced to aerial and instantly fell in love. She loved the challenge of taking something difficult and tirelessly working until it looked effortless during a performance. Lydia had been learning and perfecting aerial dance for about 4 years and really wanted to perform for the Destin community. Unfortunately, there were no performance companies. So in 2014, she gathered some of her performance friends and created her own company! The company started small but continued to grow and add more performers and more things to see. For those unfamiliar with the sport, aerial is a circus-style dance where performers (called aerialists) execute tricks of strength and flexibility in the air on a variety of apparatuses. The classic apparatus that people would recognize are the silks. Silks are suspended from a high point and allow the aerialists to wrap the silk around their body creating acrobatic poses, feats of flexibility, and spectacular drops! The sling is similar to the silk, only the sling has a loop at the bottom which adds another dimension to the tricks. Aerialists at Luminary Entertainment Company also use the lyra, trapeze, rope, lollipop lyra, chains, crescent moon, and sometimes even a combination of these apparatuses to dazzle the audience. During a number, you might see solo performances, or 21

even two or three performers gracing the stage at once. It is evident that if you go to an event put on by the Luminary Entertainment Company, you will have variety, wonder, and excitement bursting from the stage. The Luminary Entertainment Company is full of tricks and experiences that make you look toward the sky, as well as the ground with performers like stilt walkers, fire dancers, LED dancers, acrobats, a living red carpet, balloon twisters, bubble dancers, and specialty characters. After taking the last year to really invest in their props and dancers, they are prepared to offer their guests a whole new world of performances! If aerial dance is something you are interested in checking out, Lydia teaches aerial silks and lyra classes at Vertical Pole Studio in Navarre. It is important to note that no skill level is needed to start, just an open mind and a desire to have fun! Aerial is not body-type specific either. Bring your body, bring your skill level, bring yourself, bring your friends, and give it a try. You will have a good time and possibly gain a new hobby. All of the Luminary Entertainment Company performances are announced on their Facebook page. Look for them this summer at the Luau Fire Show on Thursday evenings at Al’s Beach Club and Burger Bar on Okaloosa Island! It is a show sure to ignite the magic hidden in your heart and leave you breathless for more.

ot all heroes wear capes, some wear fabulous heels. Being a woman can be a difficult job. We are often expected to be everything to everyone. Work hard to reach your full potential in your career field, but also raise a family in-between. Make sure you meet all of your deadlines at work but also bake a casserole and join a book club. While it may seem overwhelming to “do it all,” there are a few local women who seem to have it figured out. And, for that, they are my heroes; or should I say heroines. Malala Fund said, “I want every girl to know that her voice can change the world.” This group of women are bravely climbing to the top and making a difference in the lives of those around them. In these articles, we are raising a glass to some amazing women in our community. As successful businesswomen and entrepreneurs, these women are the examples that we need for our youth. Some are mothers, some are bosses, some are adventurous, some lead quietly from the sidelines, but there is one thing they all have in common — they are heroines. The leaders, the path blazers, the extraordinary women that always go a step above the rest. A heroine is defined as a woman admired or idealized for her courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. These fearless women are that and more. 29

hen she was only 4 years old, this heroine was learning to sing harmonies with her siblings and gaining a deep love of that classic country folk and gospel music sound. She took piano lessons from early grade school all the way through high school and has been using those musical abilities ever since! Phyllis Hasty McGill is an Emerald Coast native and loves being able to call this place home. She grew up in Crestview and now lives in Miramar Beach with her husband. Currently she teaches private lessons to both voice students and piano students. She has taught for a long time and enjoys seeing the progress her students make with their passions. Before moving to more of a teaching-based career, Phyllis was a full-time professional singer. One of her greatest singing accomplishments happened right after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. She wrote a song called Christmas is Love and recorded it with a few of her private students. They sold the CD throughout the Emerald Coast area and generated more than $2,500 to donate to the families of the Windows on the World (a restaurant in the north tower) employees who had died that tragic day. It was a beautiful collaboration of talents that made a heartfelt impact. Growing up, Phyllis’ parents, Rogene and Charlie, were very influential on helping her become the woman she is today. It was her father who helped her harmonize with her siblings and her mother who pushed her to continue with piano. They really instilled in her a love and a need for education. Her parents also rationed a lot of television, which fostered a love of reading and family dinner conversations. When her brother, Kenny, was 17 he passed away from cancer. This experience inspired Phyllis to continue performing music professionally and to treasure moments spent with friends and family. She lives for special moments to remember him since he was robbed so early of a good life. Her proudest accomplishment is her children, Sean and
Claire. It is an honor to be their mother and to see them grow into independent people. If she could talk to her 20-year-old self there would be so much she would say! But after narrowing it down, she settled on telling her to not waste a minute crying over her looks and especially don’t waste a minute crying over undeserving men. Her biggest female influences are her mother and her good friend, Hilda. They both encourage her and love her unconditionally. They lived their lives as amazing examples of non-judgemental acceptance while always treating everyone with kindness. Phyllis loves to share her talents with the community and enjoys when she can use her voice to make a difference. She is an outstanding example to her students and of all the ways a beautiful voice can make things happen. Even just listening to someone sing or play a sweet instrumental song can lift the spirits of the listener. She will continue to use her voice and her lessons to bring joy to her community. Phyllis is so happy every time one of her students keeps in touch with her after they have moved on. She cannot take credit for their individual talents, but she will always appreciate the time she gets to spend with her students during lessons and listening to them perform.

rowing up as a military child, Donna Johns never lived in the same place very long. She has called Miramar Beach home since 2002 but also resided in Okaloosa County for many years. Donna’s father was very influential in guiding her to a career that she loved. He was in the Air Force for 28 years and followed that with a security policeman role. When it was time for Donna to choose a career path she decided to join the United States Air Force as well. She served for a number of years as a Special Agent in that branch of the military. Upon her military retirement, she started her own private investigations business called, Donna J. Investigations. When she was a child, she would watch Perry Mason every night but would always end up falling asleep before finding out who “did it!” Every morning she would ask her parents to fill in the missing pieces and finish the story in
32-33_Heroine_Donna.indd 1
her mind, so doing real life investigations was an obvious choice. Donna prides herself on being involved in the community. She has a special passion for Walton County and likes to stay involved by attending meetings like the Board of County Commissioners, planning, and other various meetings that catch her interest. Currently she has the honor of being elected as the Commissioner of South Walton County Mosquito Control District. This is a role she absolutely loves. The team there is absolutely amazing and works so well together. They are constantly working toward improvement and hope to exceed expectations so they can best serve the citizens in South Walton County. Getting to this point in her life was not always easy. Like everyone else, Donna faced her share of bumps along the road. However, she credits hard work, dedication, passion, and basic work ethics for getting her to where she is today. She feels very blessed for her time in the military and to have been able to serve the country. She is someone who always cries at Lee Greenwood’s classic Proud to be an American because she relates to those words so deeply.
12/21/21 9:43 AM
Being a mother and a grandmother is Donna’s proudest accomplishment. She has one son, one daughter, four grandchildren, and one great grandson. Donna’s daughter was born right here at Eglin Air Force Base back in 1976, and she recently returned to the area. Donna is so happy to have family close by again. Because her parents were such positive people in her life, it makes sense that Donna’s mother is her greatest female influence. Not only was she her mother, but she was her best friend. She was a soft spoken and kind woman. She acted as the wind beneath Donna’s wings while always encouraging her to follow her passions and dreams. Looking back, Donna would tell her 20-year-old self to just go for it! Stop letting little things hold you back and don’t pass up opportunities. You have just as much purpose as anyone else, so stop thinking someone else will do it. Also, start your financial savings early; set a goal, write it down, and do it. Looking forward, Donna plans to continue in her role as Commissioner with the South Walton Mosquito Control District. It is a four-year position, and she is only in year one. She will also continue serving in other community positions as they arise.
• Last Google Search: My last Google search was, “How to limewash brick.” I didn’t want to paint my brick, but I wanted a change. A friend recommended limewash and I wasn’t sure what it was, so I Googled it, then watched a YouTube, then did it. I absolutely love how it turned out. • Dream Vacation: I went on my dream vacation about 4 I still cannot believe it. It’s almost like a dream. I swam with the sharks, fed the iguanas, snorkeled, rode jet skis. A truly amazing and fantastic trip. Don’t think I can top that one in this lifetime. • Go To Cocktail: I’ve recently found that I thoroughly enjoy a Tito’s and ginger beer. Of course, I use the sugar free ginger • Currently Reading: On my way back from a trip last week, Murder of Innocence investigations most of my life.

ichelle Anchors is a proud native of Fort Walton Beach, Florida. Living her whole life here she has come to love the area and the people in the community. Michelle tries to choose jobs that have a need that she is uniquely suited to fill. She has a strong voice that can be used for a variety of things, including addressing the needs of the community around her. She hopes to be a voice to those without one and provide space for people who are in need. She enjoys looking at the long-term needs of the community and trying to find ways to fill those holes and solve the problems and issues around us. Currently, Michelle is an Attorney at the law firm AnchorsGordon. With this position Michelle gets to interact with the members of the community directly and do her best to solve their individual issues on a personal basis. Ever since she was in the seventh grade, Michelle has had the desire to help those around her. She likened it to her love of dessert: It always feels like there is room for more!! She views getting involved with something bigger than herself as a fun and satisfying use of her time. If Michelle has the excess time, she is going to spend it trying to solve people’s problems or bettering the community in some way or another. There is always room for more, right? Becoming the person we are today is no easy task. It is only found after a series of events that push us toward something new. Michelle has great faith in God

that becomes evident as she considered what made her the woman she is today. Michelle finds solace in reading the Book of Common Prayers and loves to quote the line “With God’s help.” It is this line she quoted when prompted for more information about why she has become the woman she is. She listens to the directions God points her in and tries her best to live a good life. Female influences are abundant in Michelle’s life. Her mother and her two grandmothers were very influential in sculpting Michelle’s life and the paths she has taken. They were good examples on how to act and left a lasting impact on her that she still relies on as she continues throughout her life. Michelle is extremely proud of her two children, Sam and Chi. She cannot take all the credit for who they are because they did most of the work themselves, but she is grateful for her role in their lives. She loves being their mother. Some of her other proud accomplishments involve other people’s stories so she is not able to share the details. But overall, Michelle tries to live a very transparent life when she is able. Looking forward, Michelle is interested in spending the next five years looking at how we can best prepare this coastal community for the effects of climate change in terms of infrastructure, development, and economic

Mary-Frances Mullins
Owner, Amazing Lash Studio written by: Emily Brink photography by: Shanna Magnuson
A
s someone who grew up as a child with a crippling fear of talking to people, Mary-Frances Mullins stretched herself out of her comfort zone on a daily basis. As she got older, MaryFrances had to try so hard to extend herself to new people and to actually have conversations with them. If you were to meet her today, you never would be able to guess her previous fear of communicating. She has put in the work and made the effort to become the outgoing and interactive person she is today. If she could go back and tell her 20-year-old self anything, it would be that overall, people are inherently nice. As she moved past her fear of talking to people, Mary-Frances came to realize that if she was being sincere, people were usually pretty darn nice. It was 2018 when MaryFrances and her husband moved from Scottsdale, AZ to Miramar Beach, FL. It was a big move, but they were excited to be somewhere new. Once they were settled in the community, MaryFrances realized the area was in need of an eyelash extension place that did not cost the price of a luxury car payment. MaryFrances was a loyal customer of the Amazing Lash Studio location in Scottsdale for many years before moving, so it made sense to bring an Amazing Lash Studio franchise to the Florida Panhandle. She is so proud of the brand she has created but

especially of the women she works with at the store. Lash extensions are no easy task, and Mary-Frances gets to see women of all ages master the craft and transform into confident and capable women. Mary-Frances currently owns stores in Destin and Pensacola, is developing a store in Panama City, and has plans to build stores in Tallahassee and Gainesville in 2023. Mary-Frances became the woman she is today because of the amazing example of her parents. Her father was incredible at managing stress, and Mary-Frances is still boggled at that capability. He started with nothing and was able to build a widely successful real estate business from scratch. Starting a business from nothing is something that could easily bring a lot of stress onto a person and a family, but Mary-Frances’ father knew how to leave work at work and how to disperse his stress in other ways. Her father and mother were able to work together so that they never missed big events for their children but also gave the blooming business adequate attention. Mary-Frances tries to implement their tactics in her life today so her children do not feel the stress of her work. For six years, Mary-Frances was a Girl Scout leader for her daughter’s troup. Eventually her daughter decided to “retire” (as they like to call it) but the growth the girls experienced during that time was exponential. During cookie season they had to approach adults for the cookie sale, make change, upsell cookies, set group goals, etc. It was fun to watch them grow and to see them gain confidence. Mary-Frances is also on the Marketing Board for the Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center. She believes that children are such a gift and if you have ever struggled to conceive — like her and her husband have — you do not take children for granted. The childhood experience shapes the rest of your life, and if MaryFrances can make a difference, she will.

fter moving around for a while, this heroine finally settled down when she was 10 years old with her family in Niceville, Florida. Today, Janae Erickson is still in Niceville, and it is where she and her husband are raising their two boys. Art is something that Janae has always been passionate about. Her art journey started with an interest in computers and because of that she learned Photoshop, which really fueled her creative fire. While she was in college at the University of Central Florida getting her Bachelor of Fine Arts, she focused most of her time on 3D animation because she was passionate about movies. But that did not stop her from diving into other artistic outlets such as bookbinding, type and design, and graphic design. Soon, she began taking on side projects designing websites and logos. This helped inspire her to start her own Etsy business with her best friend and provide personalized illustrations for people. It was during a freelance project in 2017 that she found Shantelle and Hilaree and started her current position at Frances Roy Agency as their Art Director. Janae’s job responsibilities include establishing design styles that accurately reflect each client’s brand. She has proudly created comprehensive brand identities for J. Leon Gallery and the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation that went on to win various awards. She also builds ad campaigns, social media graphics, animations, websites, magazines, and illustrations in various styles that fit what the client is looking for. With such a wellrounded resume, she is able to bend

her style so the client gets just what they are envisioning. Part of the reason she loves her job is because she gets to problem solve and help each client reach their goals. Since starting at the Frances Roy Agency, Janae has grown exponentially as an artist and graphic designer. She loves the puzzle of combining the desires of the client into something that will actually improve the client’s business and their customer experience. Complete branding jobs are her favorite because they are so comprehensive and she gets to see the project from beginning to end. Janae is always up for a challenge and never likes saying no to a project that will stretch her design skills, even if she has never done that specific thing before. If it is in the realm of design, she will figure it out! Family is a huge support to Janae and her art. Her sister pushed her to submit a mural for the Niceville Mural Contest, and Janae is so proud of herself for actually winning! She has also won an American Advertising Award at Frances Roy for branding and motion graphics. During preparation for the Niceville Mural Contest, everything shut down because of the pandemic. Her husband was so supportive and took on extra tasks to make sure she had enough time to finish her project. Even her two sons, who are in kindergarten and preschool, love to help their mom with arts and crafts and different projects. She believes that creativity is more than just artwork; it’s solving problems and creating unique solutions in everything you do. Her and her family enjoy walks at Turkey Creek, trips to the park, and story time at the library. They are lucky to spend a lot of time together, and they cannot wait to be able to see Janae’s mural on their walks.

en — can’t live with them, can’t live without them. But luckily we’ve found a few good men! Leaders, mentors, partners, gentlemen. There are approximately 161.6 million men in the United States. That’s a big number, but all we need is a few good men to make a difference. We are lucky that the Emerald Coast has as many good men as they do palm trees. Our area is booming with strong male role models helping to lead the way and to guide the younger generations down the right path. These men are out there in our community making a real difference. They are running businesses, they are volunteering, they are working at the local nonprofits, they are fathers, and they are husbands. These men are juggling all of these jobs and are doing it with style and grace. Being a good man is more than just following the rules, it’s being the individual who goes above and beyond. It’s being the man who isn’t afraid to stand up for what is right. A truly good man is one whose traits perfectly balance out. He is both strong and sensitive, a leader but can also take direction. A good man is someone you can look up to.

orn in Albany, Georgia, and raised in Leesburg, Georgia, Jason Bowden’s Southern roots run deep. He moved to Panama City Beach, Florida, in 2011 and has loved it ever since. He is currently a Firefighter and an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) for the Panama City Beach Fire Rescue. Being a firefighter is in his genes as both his father and grandfather served as firemen in the Albany, Georgia, fire department. Being a 20-something is hard, so looking back and giving ourselves grace for what we didn’t know is important. It is also fun to give advice to that younger version of ourselves. If Jason had the chance, he would tell his 20-year-old self that in the end, some things just aren’t as important as they seem. Find those things that will matter most later in life and focus on them now. Investing in the future is never a bad move! Jason’s wife, Kim, is his greatest female influence. Part of Jason’s job includes being gone for 48 hours at a time, and Kim holds the fort down at home. He is grateful for her and for her kind nature. She is an amazing mother and truly invests in the people she cares about including her family and her friends. Marrying her and getting to call her his best friend are among some of Jason’s greatest accomplishments. Jason is also so proud of his children, which along with being their father and making his family proud, are also accomplishments that mean the most to him. Giving back to the community is easy when you are a fireman and EMT. Jason is grateful for a job that allows him to serve the community he lives in in a very real way. He also enjoys serving in his church by playing the drums for his local congregation. Kim and Jason also lead a marriage group to help other couples along their marriage journey. Over the next five years, Jason and Kim plan to continue giving back in these ways and more. Jason is looking forward to the opportunity of being a firefighting instructor for new firefighters to help increase their skills and improve their safety tactics. During Jason’s time as a mentor, he hopes that the people he has counseled understand the importance of having a good skill set and developing a passion. That passion and skill set don’t necessarily need to be something specific, but it needs to be something that person is excited about. However, the first part of becoming a good member of society is to invest in yourself first. If you invest in yourself first, you will be able to help the people around you better. 43

Phillip Bauer
Head Chef + Owner, PB&J goes Gourmet written by: Emily Brink photography by: Shanna Magnuson

eautiful Destin, Florida, is where Phillip Bauer now lives with his wife, Jess, although it is not far from his hometown of Crestview. Phillip is the Head Chef and owner of PB&J goes Gourmet, a catering company that brings gourmet food right to your door and into your very kitchen. They pride themselves on being able to bring the experience of having a personal chef right in your home to treat you and your family to a truly fancy meal at your own kitchen table. Phillip and his team also provide their chef expertise for bigger events and celebrations. They have done work with the Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation and the Gulf Coast Sinfonia in order to raise awareness and funds for music education for the community. They also try to help the community by collaborating with other local organizations to donate their leftover products to Destin Harvest so there is less wasted food and less things going to the landfill. Phillip looks forward to working with Food for Thought to help fight local child hunger. It is great to make such a difference right here in the community we all live in. Without his wife, the dream of starting his own business would still only be a dream. Jess is Phillip’s biggest female influence because she is constantly pushing him to be better and to fight for his dreams. In fact, the story behind the name PB&J goes Gourmet is quite sweet once you realize the meaning. It is an acronym and a pun all in one. Phillip likes to call Jess “the J to his PB,” which would explain how they went with PB&J. He is so grateful to have someone like Jess in his life. Starting his own company is his greatest accomplishment, especially seeing how far it has gotten him in such a short time. Phillip loves what he does and loves seeing his food make people smile as they take a bite. The most enjoyable part of being a chef for Phillip is the ability to teach others the knowledge that he has gained in the past from other chefs. Cooking is a long series of learning tips and tricks from people who love it. You can gain knowledge not only from people who have been doing it a long time, but Phillip has had the privilege of watching and learning from some of the younger chefs he has mentored as well. It is always a great opportunity to mentor new chefs because they are so excited to learn and proud of their accomplishments. Whether the chefs Phillip comes in contact with are promoted at the restaurants they work at, become actual chefs themselves, or start their own business, he is so proud of them for following their
passions and bettering their lives. He is happy to have done his part in pointing them in the right direction as a mentor and as a friend. Phillip is pretty happy with the direction of his life and the way everything has panned out. The only thing he would do if he met his 20-year-old self is refer back to the first date with Jess and tell his younger self that a cheek kiss is not necessarily a bad kiss! He is looking forward to working with more organizations in the future to bring gourmet food to people in the community and to build a more sustainable environment.

Dr. Dennis Lichorwic
Founder and President, The Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry written by: Emily Brink photography by: Pure7 Studios
A
lthough he was born in Cleveland, Ohio, Dr. Dennis Lichorwic has called the Emerald Coast home for more than 20 years. Currently, he and his family reside in Destin, Florida. As the founder and President of The Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry, Dr. Lichorwic and his team provide exceptional dental care for the communities of Destin, Panama City Beach, and Navarre. They pride themselves in offering a relaxed environment and comfortable care so their patients can feel at ease while in their office.
As a cosmetic and restorative dentist, Dr. Lichorwic spends a lot of time helping patients achieve their ideal smile. A single smile is a universal language so being confident in a smile can go a long way when it comes to being confident in your everyday life. Dr. Lichorwic is proud of his team every time a person walks out of their office feeling more confident than when they walked in. For a long time now, Dr. Lichorwic and his team have been corporate sponsors for many of the charitable organizations throughout the community. Some of the organizations they have proudly sponsored are Children in Crisis, Emerald Coast Children’s Advocacy Center, Food for Thought, Children’s Volunteer Health Network Destin Charity Wine Auction Foundation, Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation, Emeril Lagasse Foundation, Sinfonia Gulf Coast, and Destin Women’s Club. Dr. Lichorwic and his wife Glenda have also served on a number of boards to better help these organizations achieve their goals. Dr. Lichorwic believes that it is his deepest honor and accomplishment to be able to give back to this community. Blessed with three beautiful sons, Dr. Lichorwic would count them as his proudest accomplishment. He loves to see them grow and to see who they are becoming. As he reflects on his past, Dr. Lichorwic would go back and tell his 20-year-old self to relax a little bit and to create more quality time with family. Of course, he would also say to invest in Apple and Amazon! His biggest female influence would be his mother. Dr. Lichorwic grew up in a very “black and white” home where his mother ran the house with a strict, unwavering hand. She was an extremely strong woman who did not believe there was any gray area and did not bend rules. This strong sense of right and wrong definitely helped Dr. Lichorwic to become the man he is today and guide him throughout his life. Part of the mission at The Center for Cosmetic and Family Dentistry is to keep themselves on the cutting edge of dentistry and to be leaders, not only in this area but in the country as well. They are always striving to improve their practice and to be the best for their clients. Their team truly has taken this to heart and strives to be better every day. Dr. Lichorwic hopes that he has inspired all those who work with him to expand their knowledge and skills to be the best they can be in their profession. 45

irls just want to have fun … and brunch. Because let’s be real, brunch is life. While you can certainly brunch anytime, something just hits different when it’s for a birthday party. There are endless opportunities for bottomless mimosa brunches around every city across the country, but why not bring the party closer to home? Like your living room. Hosting a birthday brunch for a girlfriend opens up a world of possibilities for food, décor, drinks, and themes. Deciding on outfit choices is important, but your first order of business when throwing a party should always be food. Brunch is that fun time of day where it’s not morning, but it’s not afternoon. You can drink a cup of coffee while also drinking a cocktail and your menu can lean more toward breakfast food or lunch food. You can go traditional with breakfast casseroles and cinnamon rolls or whip up breakfast burritos and pressed paninis. Think of ways to take your food up a notch. Instead of having donuts laid out on a plate, try hanging them on an Insta-worthy donut board.
You can provide a new take on the Southern favorite chicken and waffles by displaying a platter of chicken nuggets alongside little waffle triangles and a cute syrup dispenser. A festive way to present your food is to get several boards and slates and have a long sprawling display of charcuterie, muffins, pastries, and fruits tumbling out across the table. You can incorporate fresh flowers, greenery, and candles into the display to truly make it a work of art. It’s aesthetically pleasing and inviting for guests to gather and converse around the display as they enjoy the meal together.

47-50 GetReady.indd 2
12/21/21 9:57 AM
Once you’ve got food covered, it’s time to get the party started with drinks. Mimosas and girls brunch just go hand in hand. Setting up a pretty mimosa or bellini bar with fun personalized chalkboard signs like, “Brittany’s Birthday Bellini Bar,” will add those extra touches to your party that make it memorable for your special friend. It’s always a good idea to have the oldfaithful classics like orange juice on hand, but offer some festive options as well like pineapple juice topped with pomegranate seeds and peach puree garnished with fresh mint. Make sure you have plenty of pretty glassware available to enjoy your bubbles from. If you want to add some pizazz, you could even sprinkle each glass with edible glitter or freeze edible flowers into ice cubes for a dazzling drink display. As a rule of thumb, always buy one or two more bottles of Champagne or prosecco than you think you need … or go ahead and make it three or four because brunch always has a way of spilling into the day. 49
47-50 GetReady.indd 3
12/21/21 9:57 AM
If you decide to host a birthday brunch at home rather than a restaurant, one perk is that the dress code can be anything you desire! You could do a garden party theme, complete with cocktail dresses, beautiful straw hats, gloves, and pearls. Or you could go the opposite direction and do pajama chic. I mean, who doesn’t want to sip Champagne in silk pajamas and fuzzy slippers with their best friends? Now that’s my idea of a good time. The decorations can be a fun place to play up your gal pal’s personality at the party. Choose a color palette that complements her and theme ideas that fit her style. If you have a big wall you can do a statement piece like a beautiful balloon arch or tassel backdrop to create a perfect photo op. So when your next friend’s birthday rolls around, skip the complicated group reservations and host a brunch she will never forget.

s an area so close to New Orleans, the Gulf Coast is one that embraces Mardi Gras with enthusiasm — and loads of beads. Mobile and Pensacola may be known for their local festivities, but HarborWalk Village has hopped on the parade route with a celebration of fun for the entire family. For more than 12 years, HarborWalk Village has held a weekend of events, letting the good times roll. This year, Carnival will be celebrated on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 26 and 27. “Mardi Gras on the Harbor is one of our favorite annual events,” says Maria Carbone, Marketing Manager for HarborWalk. “We are looking forward to welcoming everyone for this year’s festivities.” Saturday’s Mardi Gras Celebration and Parade is a family-friendly day filled with fun for everyone. Rolling through the Village at 4 p.m., the parade, featuring authentic Mardi Gras floats, brings this annual celebration at HarborWalk Village to life. Beads will fill the air as they are tossed by revelers, and Fais Do-Do will be setting the mood with live Cajun music on the Main Stage. The day also features face painting and a stilt-walking court jester. If you are looking to be a part of the Mardi Gras experience, gather a krewe to ride in a float during the parade! Float packages can be purchased for the Mardi Gras Celebration and include a party of up to eight people, face painting, a cooler packed with refreshments from event sponsors, and a float fully stocked with hundreds of beads to throw during the parade. Visit the HarborWalk Village Facebook Page for more information on parade participation. Sunday, Feb. 27, the fun continues. Calling all four-legged friends to join the celebration! Pawdi Gras commences with a festive pet costume contest at 4 p.m. HarborWalk Village invites you to dress your pets in their best purple, green, and gold attire. Sponsors for the weekend include Coca-Cola, Modelo, Miller Lite, and Elite Jeeps. HarborWalk Village’s Mardi Gras Celebration is open to the public and free to attend. This weekend of fun brings the revelry of Mardi Gras from New Orleans to the Destin Harbor.

here’s no time like the present to better yourself. People say, “New year, new you,” but there’s no magic behind the date of January 1. It doesn’t matter if it’s February or July, you can make little changes in your daily life today that will create massive results. Sometimes it can be overwhelming when you think of all the things you want to change in your lifestyle. Weight isn’t lost overnight, your health doesn’t improve in a week. But you can tweak microelements of your day that will add up to life-changing differences. Instead of impulsively joining a new gym and committing to heavy weight lifting every day, take baby steps and begin with a daily walk. You don’t have to be a marathon runner to reap the benefits of hitting the pavement. A long walk is a great way to get your blood pumping and have some personal time to reflect, listen to a podcast, or enjoy nature. You can bring a friend or spouse along with you to create a special time to connect with a loved one. Bring your children along and you are passing on the gift of enjoying fitness and instilling lifelong healthy habits. Other low-impact workouts that are great for balancing your mind and strengthening your body is yoga or barre. Again, you don’t need to join a fancy gym or be an expert, you just have to have the desire to begin. With technology you can do these workouts on a plethora of apps and videos from the comfort of your own home. Having a morning routine is one of the most influential changes you can make in your life. The tone you start your day with will impact the entire flow of your day. Ease into the morning with fresh air and sunlight. Even taking a few moments to ground yourself on your front porch will release those happy endorphins. The next step is to hydrate. After a long night's sleep your body needs to be replenished. In general, you should drink between half an ounce and an ounce of water for each pound you weigh, every day. If you find drinking enough water a challenge, try this great hack: Trick yourself into feeling like it’s a little spa moment. Get a pretty glass carafe and fill it each night 55
54-57_SMallChanges.indd 2
12/21/21 10:08 AM
with water. Add in fresh mint, citrus, cucumbers, a little ginger, even a slice of jalapeno. While these ingredients each bolster different health benefits, the overall difference is that the water simply tastes great. You feel special when you pour yourself that water in the morning, and that’s important. Slow down and savor the little things. While changing the food that you put into your body is the best way to get the nutrients you need and to see real changes, sometimes you need to fill in the gaps. Incorporating vitamins into your routine can help, but can never replace a healthy, well-balanced diet. The vitamin world can be overwhelming, so visiting your physician can help narrow down if you have any nutritional deficiencies and pinpoint what vitamins and/ or minerals your body is lacking. There are also online companies that do a personal assessment and curate custom daily vitamin packs made for your needs, delivered to your door. Take your health journey one step at a time and make small changes like one or two healthy food replacements today. Swap out sour cream for plain Greek yogurt this taco Tuesday and sub in zucchini noodles for regular pasta on Saturday spaghetti night. Just remember, small changes can give you big results.

Refresh, Renew, and Make It Your Own! written by: Jessica Duncan / photography provided by: Jessica Duncan Team

any couples desire to purchase an older home and make it their own by giving it a complete facelift. They want to bring the home up to the current style while living in the house. I see this time and time again in the real estate world. The problem is most families start major renovation projects but never finish them. I meet with homeowners who have laid the tile, but never grouted it; began a kitchen remodel, but never installed upper cabinets; and renovated a bathroom, without finishing the tub installation. Fortunately, this was not the case for Chris and Alex Cox. They started with a threebedroom, three-bath home built in 1999 that was in dire need of some updating. Not only did they update it, but they renovated their entire house into a beautiful five-bedroom, three-bath home with a back porch ready for family and friends, including an outdoor kitchen. Let’s talk about the kitchen. They started with drab, basic cabinets, a funky layout, Formica countertops, and no wow factor. The first step was redesigning the kitchen layout, creating a center island and back bar, providing more cabinet space, countertop surfaces, and more extensive seating. The most significant advantage of this redesign was the natural flow into the family room, making it into the popular, large, open concept. The custom cabinetry has taller cabinets taking advantage of wasted space above the old cabinets and adding an unmistakable style to the kitchen. The travertine backsplash created texture and elongated the area by carrying the travertine to the ceiling over the kitchen sink framing the window. The kitchen’s brightness was created by adding recessed 59
59-62_TourofHomesPcola_JanFeb22.indd 1
12/21/21 10:13 AM
lighting and three pendulum lights over the bar. Granite countertops, stainless appliances, and custom pantry doors were the perfect finishing details on this kitchen facelift. They completely renovated the original master bath, creating a natural place for relaxation. The free-form tub was positioned between shiplap walls creating a private area to soak your cares away. The shower is definitely the place to relax or kick-start your day, boasting subway tiles, a rain
showerhead, and a large bench. The vanities are custom cabinets with kickouts to give dimension to the room; and the center tower offers extra storage for the items you use daily, but don’t want to see cluttering the vanity. The shiplap wall behind the vanities provides balance to the room. The tile floor contrasts the shower with black tile and white grout, adding the right pop. They included a massive covered patio with an outdoor kitchen at the back of the home. This area gives them
the perfect space for their family and friends to gather while watching the game and grilling out. The ceiling is tongue and groove, stained wood with recessed lighting that brings warmth to the back porch creating a space you don’t want to leave. The outdoor kitchen is complete with a griddle, grill, and sink for cleanup. There is a ton of countertop space, including an island that provides an area for food prep, a buffet, or a place to pull up a bar stool for a game of cards.

While the kitchen, master retreat, and back porch are just a few of the significant projects they completed, the finished product of this family’s major renovation is what many families dream of achieving. Not only did they finish it, but they also created a consistent style that carries throughout the home. Unlike many remodels, there is no hodgepodge of renovated rooms that do not match in style, quality, or beauty. Instead, Chris and Alex’s dream of refreshing and making it their own became a reality for their family to enjoy.

t’s the end of a long work week and you walk into a dimly lit bar and slide onto a leather bar stool. The reflection of the crystal chandelier glitters in the mirror behind the bar as you contemplate which boozy concoction you will escape with tonight. Certain drink orders are appropriate for the venue and evoke instant memories. At a beach bar you order a margarita, at a baseball game an ice-cold beer, at Sunday-funday brunch it’s an obvious bottomless mimosa order for me. When you’re at a swanky bar, it’s the perfect setting for a martini. Whether you like it shaken, not stirred, extra dirty, straight up, dry, or with a twist, there is no classier drink order. The martini and the long, thin-stemmed, v-shaped glass you sip from are iconic for a reason. There is folklore of how the martini was invented, but the drink has evolved over the years and is now synonymous with high-end luxury. In the 1960s, people were ordering Smirnoff vodka with a twist because they saw James Bond doing it … so it must be cool. Then along came Sex and the City and the rise of the Cosmopolitan, with it dancing the night away on epic girl’s nights out across America. Following that came the Appletini, the Espresso Martini, and the Passionfruit Martini; the list goes on and on. While these drinks are served in a martini glass, they are indeed not a “martini.” A standard martini is equal parts high quality dry vermouth and gin. Simple, yet intricate. Cocktail making is an art, and not everyone is Picasso. The gin must be very cold, the vermouth and the olives must be kept in the fridge, and the shaking, the pouring, and the presentation take a certain finesse. Then there’s the classic vodka and vermouth martini; which can be simple with olives, dirty with olive juice, or paired with a zesty lemon peel twist. Now that we’ve covered the basics, let’s add some flair. Here are some festive options to get your party started.

ith the rise of medispas, there has also been a surge in the popularity of certain practices, treatments, and procedures all designed to make us look and feel better. For Dr. Chris Croley and his husband, Jerry Drinkard, the medispa industry was a chance to use their skills in a way that was beneficial to others and followed their vision of what client care was all about. Open since 2019, Skin and Tonic has been a premier location for concierge aesthetics in Pace. “We wanted to make our services easily accessible to everyone. We both envisioned something other than your traditional medical office experience and wanted to make our services different, more personal,” says Jerry, a board-certified Nurse Practitioner. “Medical spas are an important part of self-care because these facilities are staffed by fully licensed health care professionals and certified staff. Each staff member’s focus is to make that patient a priority for the time we spend together. Self-care is often ignored because our lives get so busy, but it is an integral part of preventing burn out, unwinding emotionally, and decreasing stress.” Owned and operated by Dr. Chris, a board-certified Physician, Skin and Tonic offers a wide range of aesthetic services including neurotoxin treatments, dermal fillers, laser therapies, facials, and chemical peels. In addition to these services, they have a full IV lounge focusing on IV vitamins and minerals as well as the popular hangover cures. “Recently, we have been treating several patients suffering from post-COVID fatigue and brain fog,” Jerry notes. The medispa also offers the Vampire Procedures such as the Vampire Facelift, Vampire Breast Lift, and Vampire Facial, as well as the O-shot and P-shot. Both Dr. Chris and Jerry bring a wealth of experience to the practice — something which sets them apart from most medispas in the area. Dr. Chris serves as the Director of Aesthetics for Empire Medical Training, one of the nation's most comprehensive training programs for physicians and other health care practitioners.
Likewise, Jerry is also a Trainer for Empire Medical Training and offers hands-on classes across the U.S. as well as private training for special procedures such as thread lifts, unique lip techniques, and general aesthetic practices. Adding to their expertise, permanent makeup guru Trinkette Parker is a partner at Skin and Tonic, lending her knowledge of the industry and latest techniques as well as her exceptional client care. “We are very fortunate to have Trinkette as a business partner and active part of the team,” says Jerry. “In my opinion, she is the master of permanent makeup. She has decades of experience and has a passion for helping people that is unsurpassed.” Among Skin and Tonic’s most popular services and treatments include neurotoxins and fillers, though their most popular "non-traditional" services are related to sexual health. “The O-shot and P-shot are very popular, and people love the results,” Jerry notes. “These treatments provide patients with an all-natural way to improve and revitalize their sex life without the risk of more invasive technologies. I love getting texts and calls from patients saying that their sex life is better after their treatment than it has been in years!” The overall goal of Skin and Tonic is, naturally, to give the highest level of care in all things. “We want every patient to know that they are special and appreciated from the time they walk into our lobby,” says Jerry. “We pride ourselves on creating an amazing experience for each patient and being able to offer a unique range of services. We appreciate everyone that steps through our door and want that to be translated by the care they receive by our staff.”

Q: What are Vampire Treatments? A: The Vampire Treatments include the Vampire Facelift, Vampire Facial, Vampire Breast Lift, P-shot, and O-shot. All of these treatments involve collecting blood from the patient and using a special centrifuge to spin the blood and separate the red blood cells from the plasma. The specimen is then prepared using a special technique to create a platelet rich plasma, which is then injected into the implied area. Q: How long do the Vampire Facials last? A: Vampire Facials are a great way to improve skin quality, improve tone and texture, and create a beautiful glow. Results can last 8 to 12 months, depending on age, lifestyle, and skin care regimen. Q: What is a Vampire Breast Lift? A: The Vampire Breast Lift is a non-surgical procedure that uses a combination of dermal filler and platelet rich plasma to improve the skin texture of the breast and create the look of a fuller, more attractive breast. The focus of the treatment is usually in the cleavage area but can also be used to treat rippling in breast implant patients. Q: Is permanent makeup painful? A: We use some of the best products that money can buy to guarantee that our patients are as comfortable as possible during their treatment. Occasionally, we have patients that are unable to use the topical anesthetics or need a little extra help to get through their treatment. Since we have in-house medical providers, we can offer nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas to our patients. To my knowledge, there are no other permanent makeup artists in the area that offer this service.

o, ladies, now that the world has gotten comfortable enough to talk about the sacred halls of our vaginas on nationally televised commercials, discussing all of the things that affect that very cherished part of our bodies should be easy peasy, right? In some cases, yes. Most of us have no problems talking to our girlfriends about the great orgasms we had last Tuesday in the middle of our Netflix bingefests with our guys. But talking about things that are straight-up serious and causing issues down there? Nope. Most of the time, we’d rather just suffer through it and not discuss it with anyone but our gynos — if that. Well, grab a glass of wine, girlfriend, and get comfortable because we have some things to talk about. If you’re a woman with a vagina, you have the potential of suffering vaginal dryness at some point. Buckle up, buttercup, because it’s not simply related to age. We see you, honey, sitting there thinking, “I’m not menopausal, so this sh*@ isn’t going to happen to me for years.” Get ready for the reals. Sure, menopause can exacerbate the issue or even be the cause; but so are other factors including breastfeeding after childbirth, taking certain oral contraceptives, undergoing cancer treatments such as chemotherapy and hormonal therapy, diabetes, taking certain medications including antihistamines and antidepressants, and undergoing surgery to remove the ovaries. Suffering from Sjogren’s syndrome is also a cause, as the autoimmune disorder causes dryness in the mouth and eyes and can also affect vaginal moisture. So what is vaginal dryness, exactly? Just like it sounds: extreme dryness of the vagina that causes discomfort and pain. It can affect everything from sitting and standing to exercising and urination. And then there’s the sex. What’s supposed to be a pleasurable time for you turns into a painful ordeal that you’d rather avoid altogether. Sounds terrible, right? It is. The biggest issue here is a marked decline in your hormones. When your hormone level dips and the estrogen level is more depleted than your wine cabinet after a weekend spent with your girlfriends, it affects everything, and the moisture levels in your vagina become sub-Saharan. Something of note here: Dryness isn’t always limited to the inside of the vaginal canal. Less estrogen equals less natural vaginal moisture, and that can dry and irritate the vulva. For www.ScarlettMag.com

12/21/21 10:28 AM
anyone not terribly familiar with the different areas of their vagina and their technical terms, this is the external area of your nether regions. Vulvar dryness is what causes irritation during regular activities like putting on underwear, sitting, or just walking around. Some women suffering vaginal dryness also experience an increase in the frequency of urination or having UTIs on the regular. Menopausal women with this group of symptoms are facing genitourinary syndrome of menopause. So now the good news: You can do something about it. Over-the-counter moisturizers and lubricants are a simple, costeffective fix for the immediate issue. Vaginal moisturizers take care of moisture around and inside the vagina, and there are two types: internal moisturizers, which are inserted into the vagina to help build up vaginal tissue, and external moisturizers that are made for use on the vulva. Lubricants help alleviate discomfort during sex. Sexually active women — you know who you are, and we salute you — should use lubricants as well as a vaginal moisturizer. Water-based lubricants may not last as long as silicone-based products, but they are more recommended by most gynos. And take note: Oil-based lubricants can cause irritation and make condoms less effective, so back away from anything that says oil-based on the label. And as much as you may not want to hear this, it’s time to see your OB-GYN if irritation and pain during sex don’t improve after two months of lubing up and using moisturizers, or if you have other symptoms. We know how much you love seeing your gyno outside of your regularly scheduled annual sesh, but it’s necessary sometimes. For something stronger in the solution options, hormonal treatments may be advisable, especially if vaginal dryness comes along with urinary symptoms or menopausal symptoms — think hot flashes. Estrogen creams and tablets are inserted a few times a week into the vagina. Creams must be measured and can get messy, so tablets are a good alternative. Vaginal rings are another option. You insert them into your vagina yourself, and they release a low dose of estrogen over the course of 90 days. These treatments provide less estrogen than typical hormone therapy and have fewer risks associated with them. Discuss these options with your gyno if you think they might be a good solution for you. 85

he Emerald Coast Science Center, through its mission to inspire and grow a scientifically engaged community, is making science more approachable and accessible. Founded in 1989 through efforts led by Dr. Alexis Tibbetts, the museum was originally named Families of Okaloosa County Understanding Science (FOCUS). The founders wanted this to be a place where families could come and learn together. In 2001, the center changed its name to the Emerald Coast Science Center in the hope of becoming more of a regional attraction. In 2014, the center purchased its current building which led to an expansion of serving children and families through STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics) programs and exhibits. Diane Fraser, Director of the center, has always loved science. She even majored in chemistry in college and hopes to transform the way the community thinks about science. As part of the Emerald Coast Science Center, Diane gets to watch families come in together and interact with science in a way they may have never done in the past. The surrounding community has a large STEAM-based career field and always needs engineers and technicians to support the military. The center tries to reinforce what the children are learning in school in a more hands-on manner and to show students and families pathways to those careers. The greatest achievement of the center was staying open through the pandemic. There were less visitors and no academic field trips. The only reason they were able to stay open is through the support of the community which they are forever grateful for. They were recently voted “Best Place to Take the Kids” from both VIP Destin magazine and Best of the Emerald Coast!

Some things to check out at the museum are new exhibits featuring boating, a dino dig, a treehouse, and the STEAM bus donated by Liza Jackson Prep School. Also there is the Women in Science event which focuses on local women in STEAMrelated careers and GEMS (girls empowered in math and science) program that meets monthly at the Fort Walton Beach Library to learn about female scientists and the work they do. The center also holds Discover Science Saturdays. The best way to support the Emerald Coast Science Center is simply by visiting. Passionate volunteers are always welcome as well as any monetary donations by the public. They have lots of plans for renovating the building and adding even more exhibits. Next time you are looking for something fun to do with the kids, swing by the center and see what you can learn! Emerald Coast Science Center is located at 31 Memorial Pkwy SW, Fort Walton Beach. The Last Thing He Told Me
The Personal Librarian
by Laura Dave
by Marie Benedict + Victoria Christopher Murray
Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers — Owen’s 16-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.
In her 20s, Belle da Costa Greene is hired by J. P. Morgan to curate a collection of rare manuscripts, books, and artwork for his newly built Pierpont Morgan Library. Belle becomes a fixture in New York City society and one of the most powerful people in the art and book world, known for her impeccable taste and shrewd negotiating for critical works as she helps create a worldclass collection.
As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a U.S. marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was. And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owen’s true identity — and why he really disappeared. Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen’s past, they soon realize they’re also building a new future — one neither of them could have anticipated.
[Mystery]
With its breakneck pacing, dizzying plot twists, and evocative family drama, The Last Thing He Told Me is a riveting mystery, certain to shock you with its final, heartbreaking turn.
But Belle has a secret, one she must protect at all costs. She was born not Belle da Costa Greene but Belle Marion Greener. She is the daughter of Richard Greener, the first Black graduate of Harvard and a well-known advocate for equality. Belle’s complexion isn’t dark because of her alleged Portuguese heritage that lets her pass as white — her complexion is dark because she is African American. The Personal Librarian tells the story of an extraordinary woman, famous for her intellect, style, and wit, and shares the lengths she must go to — for the protection of her family and her legacy — to preserve her carefully crafted white identity in the racist world in which she lives.
[Book Club Worthy]
Heartbreak for Hire by Sonia Hartl Brinkley Saunders has a secret. To everyone in the academic world she left behind, she lost it all when she dropped out of grad school. Once a rising star following in her mother’s footsteps, she’s now an administrative assistant at an insurance agency — or so they think. In reality, Brinkley works at Heartbreak for Hire, a secret service that specializes in revenge for jilted lovers, frenemies, and long-suffering coworkers with a little cash to spare and a man who needs to be taken down a notch. It might not be as prestigious as academia, but it helps Brinkley save for her dream of opening an art gallery and lets her exorcise a few demons, all while helping to empower women.
[Romantic Comedy] But when her boss announces she’s hiring male heartbreakers for the first time, Brinkley’s no longer so sure she’s doing the right thing — especially when her new coworker turns out to be a target she was paid to take down. Though Mark spends his days struggling up the academic ladder, he seems to be the opposite of a backstabbing adjunct: a nerd at heart in criminally sexy sweater vests who’s attentive both in and out of the bedroom. But as Brinkley finds it increasingly more difficult to focus on anything but Mark, she soon realizes that like herself, people aren’t always who they appear to be. With Sonia Hartl’s “bitingly funny” (Publishers Weekly) prose, Heartbreak for Hire is a clever romcom you and your girlfriends won’t be able to stop talking about. 101

The Fringe Hours: Making Time for You by Jessica N. Turner Every woman has had this experience: you get to the end of the day and realize you did nothing for you. And if you go days, weeks, or even months in this cycle, you begin to feel like you have lost a bit of yourself. While life is busy with a litany of mustdos — work, parenting, keeping house, grocery shopping, laundry and on and on — women do not have to push their own needs aside. Yet this is often what happens. There’s just no time, right? Wrong. In this practical and liberating book, Jessica Turner empowers women to take back pockets of time they already have in their day in order to practice self-care and do the things they love. Turner uses her own experiences and those of women across the country to teach readers how to balance their many responsibilities while still taking time to invest in themselves. She also addresses barriers to this lifestyle, such as comparison and guilt, and demonstrates how eliminating these feelings and making changes to one’s schedule will make the reader a better wife, mother, and friend. Perfect for any woman who is doing everything for everyone — except herself — The Fringe Hours is ideal for both individuals and small group use. www.ScarlettMag.com

f you love hosting parties, you’ll likely understand the grueling task of deciding the best way to serve your guests the delicious food you have prepared. It is so disappointing when you spend hours laboring over a tasty meal only to have no way of making it presentable. It is truly a tragedy! Alright, time to figure out how to make your party table the most presentable it has ever been! In order to know what you’re missing, it is important to understand what serveware is exactly. Like the name says, serveware is anything used to serve the food to the guests. Serveware consists of things like serving bowls, salad bowls, dessert bowls, soup pots, tea pots, platters, casserole dishes, and pitchers. Serving utensils like tongs, serving spoons, serving forks, and ladles are also included in the serveware category. Seeing a long list like this can be overwhelming so here are some easy tips to make the collection process seem less daunting. First, some of these dishes can be used for multiple things so doubling up is definitely a good idea. Serving a meal with pieces of chicken? Use a nice platter. Serving only dessert and need to display some cookie options? Use the same platter! A simple bowl can be used for vegetables, fruit, potatoes, side dishes, salads, even soups. Seriously, don’t be afraid to reuse what you have. One of the most cost effective places to look for serveware is your local thrift store. Some of the cutest things can be found on the shelves and the prices make it well worth the time it took to dig through the stuff you don’t want. If you are the kind of person who isn’t afraid to mix and match you can collect slowly and when you have the resources. However, some people really love a matching set and that is OK too! In this case, it is best to save up and buy it all in one big swoop. Places like Target, Crate & Barrel, and IKEA are your best friend. You will be able to find matching pieces that will perfectly fit the aesthetic of your kitchen. Whichever way you decide to attain your serveware, the addition of a few statement pieces to your kitchen collection will elevate your dinners and provide something beautiful for your table. It is worth the investment every time someone says, “Oh, wow, I love this bowl! Where did you get it?” www.ScarlettMag.com

rowing up I had perfect vision. Most would see this as a positive attribute, but not for me when I desperately wanted glasses. I was obsessed with the idea of wearing glasses. I don’t know why. Perhaps it’s the way they make you feel when wearing them, or just wanting what you don’t have? Maybe it was that you could match your glasses to your outfit and teenybopper me couldn’t turn down an opportunity to accessorize? Whatever it was, my love affair with glasses had begun. I found myself borrowing friends’ specs to wear in class and dreaming of my own pair. Fast forward to my 30s and tada! My wish came true. I now need glasses, and turns out they are as much fun as I had anticipated all those years ago. I’m wearing a beautiful rectangular tortoise shell pair as I write this article; sipping a latte and pouring over the crisp words with the assistance of my trusty lenses. There are countless styles, shapes, and colors for glasses these days so you truly have options to appease your every mood. As far as trends go though, what goes around comes back around. Oversized thick frames and “old man” inspired wire frames popular in the 1970s are back in style for today’s youth. Paired with highwaisted “mom jeans,” cropped graphic T-shirt and sneakers, you’ve completed the Gen Z uniform. I must have been ahead of the curve because wearing nonprescription glasses as a fashion statement is now popular in a big way. Another way those with impeccable vision are incorporating glasses into their everyday life is with blue light glasses. These frames are built to protect your eyes by blocking the harmful blue light that is emitted from our constant screen use. can help reduce eye strain, headaches, risk of eye diseases, and help you sleep better. An added bonus: They look super cute too. Blue light blockers are popular in the classic tortoise shell and black, but translucent and nude-colored glasses are a trend that is being seen for the style conscious man and woman that look fabulous with anything you wear. Glasses or sunglasses are becoming a focal point on your face, therefore you want them to be flattering and complement your coloring, facial features, and face shape. You want to wear the frames, not have them wear you. First you need to determine your face shape. Are you oval, round, heart, or square? Even subtle differences will change the way eyewear looks on you. Aviators are almost universally flattering for all face shapes on men and women; so it’s no wonder they’ve withstood the test of trends and time. You want to choose shapes that balance your face and create symmetry. For example, a cat-eye frame is wider at the top than bottom which balances the angular shape of a heart face. Your coloring plays a role in how glasses and sunglasses look on you too. If you have a cool skin tone, then green, purple, blue, pink, and silver will complement you best. If you’re a warm skin tone then red, brown, beige, orange, golden, and yellow will work well with your natural elements. Gone are the days of needing to go to a store and try on a million frames. With innovative companies like Warby Parker you can do a virtual try on. You can see what the specs will look like on your face, narrow it down to your top contenders, and have them sent directly to the comfort of your home to test out before making your final decision. At the end of the day, when Skin andthatTonic choosing something you’re going to wear on your face, make sure you love it and it sparks joy. Happy shopping. 109

here’s something incredibly beautiful about ballet that commands attention, something unique and romantic that no over-engineered, technically enhanced screen production can replicate or replace. And in this day and age of computer-generated entertainment that seems to assault our senses at every turn, it’s inspiring to know that the art of ballet is as captivating as ever. Bringing the magic of Beauty and the Beast to life on the stage, the Northwest Florida Ballet (NFB) company offers a premier production that, by its very nature, has required years of preparation and training. Choreographed by Katia Garza with music by Alexander Glazunov, the ballet features 55 dancers who bring their talent, grace, and love of dance to create a masterpiece. What makes it such a phenomenal experience to behold is, of course, the story — but also the many facets of enchantment that give it such richness and dynamics on the stage. “Beauty and the Beast is a well-known story, musical, and movie — however, turning this into a ballet has been a unique opportunity in itself,” says Katia. “This production has beautiful music in addition to striking costumes and scenery. It’s also full of surprises and will make the audience laugh, cheer, and be touched by the romance of the main characters, Belle and the Beast.” Transforming the magical characters to real life presents challenges, but the production team and the dancers have adeptly taken the storybook tale that has so often been reliant on special effects on-screen and translated it into a beautiful dance. “The challenge was to create a ballet that could
transport the audience through every single scene of the story and feel immersed in it,” explains Todd Allen, Artistic Director/CEO of Northwest Florida Ballet. “The
choreographer did a fantastic job of finding and arranging the music to fit the story. The rest of the creative team outdid themselves pulling all of the elements together.” Naturally, some scenes are more challenging than others; and some scenes are more entrancing. “The end of the first act is incredibly captivating,” says Katia. “It includes a dramatic solo performed by a distraught Beast that ends with rose petals falling from the sky. It’s truly breathtaking. Another audience favorite is the ‘Be Our Guest Scene,’ which we call the ‘Food Scene.’ Several of the main characters take Belle through the castle for a bit of fun and invite her to have a magical meal with them.” As the story of Belle and Beast unfolds onstage, it is easy to see why the tale is so timeless and relevant, even now. “This love story is a favorite of both young and old audiences because of the mix of feelings that you experience as the story is told,” Katia says. “The steadfast love of Belle’s character for her father and the Beast is very touching. The story drives home the message that what is really important is the beauty of our hearts, not the outward appearance.” As much fun as audiences have watching it, the dancers are equally wrapped up in the magic of it all. “The NFB dancers have worked with choreographer Katia Garza many times and really enjoy her work. Of course, the story and characters of Beauty and the Beast are so popular that all of the dancers are very familiar with it. They’ve had a blast rehearsing this ballet and can’t wait to perform it for the public,” Todd notes. Under the guidance of Artistic Director/CEO of Northwest Florida Ballet Todd Eric Allen and Choreographer Katia Garza, Principal Dancers include Raul Peinado, International Guest Artist, as The Beast; Luciana Ato, NFB Soloist, as Belle; Jose Soares, International Guest Artist, as Gaston; Israel Rodriguez, International Guest Artist, as Maurice; Wyatt Mier, NFB Soloist, as Lumiere; Ava Elpedes, NFB company dancer, as Plumette; Timothy Knoll, NFB Soloist, as Tic Tock; C’Jae Ransom, NFB company dancer, as Mrs. Pots; and Angel Mier, NFB company dancer, as Chip. Costumes are designed by Brisa Dinorah Gomez Cruz of Mexico City, scenery by Mobile Ballet. Showtimes for Beauty and the Beast are March 12 at 7:30 p.m. and March 13 at 2:30 p.m. at the Mattie Kelly Arts Center in Niceville. For more information, visit nfballet.org. www.ScarlettMag.com

t is that time of year when things are settling down after a busy holiday season. All of our decorations are coming down, the parties are over, but the weather is still cold. And we all know what cold weather calls for … SOUP! This dish is such a cold-weather classic because each spoonful spreads warmth through your body making you warm and cozy despite what’s happening outside. Soup is a versatile dish. You can have a good hearty stew when you’re feeling hungry, a creamy delight when you need warmth, or even a warm chicken stock when you’re feeling sick. Soups can be thrown together at the last minute when you run out of dinner ideas, or they can be thoughtful and left simmering on the stove for hours so all of the yummy ingredients really get to know each other. There are chunky soups like chilis, chowders, or stews. Smooth soups like creamy bisque, pureed squash, or savory potato. And, we can’t forget the healing chicken noodle, classic minestrone, or the often joked about split pea soup. This list doesn’t even get into delicious international options! Here are three of the most delicious soup recipes, from my family to yours, to try out next time you find yourself craving something cozy. The chicken soup is filled with all-natural ingredients that are known to boost your immune system which will help get you through the cold and flu season. There is a wonderful recipe for beef stew that you can just throw in the crockpot and forget about until it’s dinnertime. Lastly, the pumpkin tomato soup is perfect for anyone really needing some good comfort food because it is hearty and filling.

• Combine chicken stock, onion, garlic, turmeric, and ginger. • Bring to a boil, reduce to a simmer until onions are translucent. • Add chicken, vegetables, salt, and pepper. Return to a boil. • Taste soup and adjust key ingredients and spices as needed. • Mix cornstarch and water in a separate bowl then pour into soup. Stir well as you pour to avoid cornstarch clumps. • Beat eggs in a separate bowl. Continuously stir soup in a circular motion as you slowly drizzle the eggs into the pot. Stir quickly for smaller egg ribbons and slower for larger egg ribbons. • Ladle soup into bowls and serve topped with fresh parsley.
