READ AN EXTRACT FROM ANTHONY BUCHANAN’S NEW BOOK! for your country – helping them to a third

place in the inaugural Rugby World Cup and securing a Triple Crown isn’t a bad return! But Anthony Buchanan’s story is about far more than one player’s career – it’s a unique, insightful chronicle of the most dramatic changes the game in Wales, and beyond, has ever seen from the perspective of one who was at the centre of it all. From the introduction of formal leagues to the dawning of professionalism, the advent of regional rugby to our teams embarking on European adventures, Buchanan, or Buck as he is known, had a ringside seat as player, coach, team manager and administrator.

Told with typical Valleys’ humour, is a must for anyone, whether a Llanelli and Wales supporter or just someone who enjoys a darn good read.

SIMON ANOTHER WEEK, ANOTHER HUGE GAME AT THE PARC AS WE WELCOME THE PLAYERS, SUPPORTERS AND OFFICIALS OF MUNSTER TO LLANELLI. Hearing Sosban Fach, Yma O Hyd, Ar Lan y Môr and Hymns and Arias reverberate around the ground last Friday night was pretty emotional for us all. It has been a long time since we have seen and heard you all back here in such numbers. As our Chief Operating Officer Phil Morgan outlined in his open letter to supporters this week, the night didn’t go without a few issues and I can assure you we are working through them all to make sure we can make our matchday experience as positive as we can. As Phil outlined, Covid has had a significant impact on a number of our processes. We had to work to counter the loss of our supplier for season ticket cards which meant they were sent out just a couple of days before the game. It is also well documented that the hospitality industry is experiencing a huge amount of challenges in terms of staff shortages and recruitment. We are encountering the same challenges at the Scarlets with a lot of our match-day operations reliant on casual staff, many of whom are just starting out with us. Hopefully, you will find that many of the issues of last weekend have been smoothed out and everything about our match-day experience is back to where we all want it to be.

time runaround and we have live entertainment in both our supporters village and the bar in the East Stand, before and after the match. I spoke to a lot of people after the Lions game and they were really positive about where we are as a club, off and on the field - some of the tries scored on Friday night had the Scarlets DNA running through them! Hopefully, we will see more of the same this afternoon. Enjoy the day, enjoy the game and cheer on the boys loud and proud. Diolch Simon

It is great to see that the club tag teams are back for their half-

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD COACH

SCARLETS Vs MUNSTER

DWAYNE After the frustration of our opening defeat in Edinburgh, it was great to see us take a step forward against a physical Emirates Lions side. I was pleased with some of the touches and the tries we scored, but also with how we approached our defensive work. We were under a lot of pressure at times, they had some big runners who came at us, but there was a real hunger from the boys to get off our line and go through our sets. As coaches and speaking to the players after the game, we loved having the fans back in the stadium and hearing you all in such good voice. It was a night I will remember for some time, my first competitive match as head coach back in Llanelli and there is no doubt, having a crowd like that behind you makes a huge difference, especially here at Parc y Scarlets. The boys have trained well again this week, but we know this game is another step up for us.

It is great to welcome back our British & Irish Lions, Ken, Wyn and Gar to the match-day squad and hopefully it won’t be too long before you get to see Sanjay back in Scarlet following his appendix operation. I am sure all the fans wish him well in his recovery. The series result in South Africa wasn’t what they would have hoped for, but the boys represented the Scarlets superbly this summer and we can all be proud of their efforts. I hope you all enjoy this afternoon’s game, it promises to be a cracker between two sides full of international talent and exciting young players. Mwynhewch y gêm prynhawn yma a diolch eto am eich cefnogaeth

Dwayne

From my experience of playing and coaching against Munster, they are a side that never goes away, they will play for the full 80 minutes and we have to match their intensity if we want to come out on top.

Sione

the quiet man who does his talking on the field

SIONE KALAMAFONI HEADED BACK TO THE HOME CHANGING ROOM AT PARC Y SCARLETS LAST FRIDAY NIGHT MINUS HIS HEADGEAR, PLAYING SHORTS AND BOOTS. Those had gone to some lucky young fans who had hung around after the final whistle to get a treasured memento and a smiling selfie with a player who has quickly become one of the Scarlets’ finest overseas signings of recent times.

8

But while he may be a relentless wrecking ball on the field, Sione continues to go about his business in a quiet unassuming manner off it.

Around his neck, Sione did manage to keep hold of a glistening URC playerof-the-match medal — yet another to add to his collection.

“He’s not the youngest of men but he doesn’t miss a day of training,” says head coach Dwayne Peel when asked about his talismanic Tongan. “Sione works really hard, he goes about his business quietly. He’s an important weapon for us. He’s been great.”

Players’ player of the season in his first campaign in West Wales, the 33-yearold No. 8 has been a revelation since his arrival from Leicester Tigers in the midst of the Covid-19 pandemic.

As for the man himself, he just shrugs his shoulders and talks about business as usual when asked about his outstanding week-to-week performances.

Up until now, Scarlets fans have been denied the opportunity to witness the Tongan powerhouse at his muscular best. Last season, with stands empty and an eerie silence around the stadiums, he was one of the most consistent performers on the PRO14 stage, leading the carrying stakes and up there as one of the top tacklers in the competition.

“I take every game as the same,” he insists. “You’re in there trying to win a game and come out on top. All I’m trying to do is win the game.” Without doubt, though, Sione has become one of the squad’s most influential performers, also playing his part to mentor some of the youngsters coming through the ranks.

In terms of role models, they don’t get much better or tougher with the 37-cap international putting his body on the line in the tight exchanges week after week. Asked if he enjoys the physical, gladiatorial aspect of rugby, he adds: “I wouldn’t say that I enjoy being hit, but I enjoy winning!”

SCARLETS Vs MUNSTER

“You see a lot of good things, a lot of bad things, things that will help a teenager grow. I wouldn’t change it for anything. Those two years helped me become a little bit older and a little bit more mature.”

Sione grew up with nine children in the house, himself the second youngest of the nine — the rough and tumble came naturally! These days the brothers are across the pond in America and Sione is hoiping, Covid-restruictions permitting, to catch up with them next year some time. He is no stranger to life in the States. When he was 19, he undertook missionary work in Chicago, working with teenagers to help improve their lives. “I belong to a church called the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, it’s a Christian church,” he explains. “Back then, when you were 19 you volunteered to go anywhere in the world – you’d pay for it yourself. We have leaders, prophets who assign you to somewhere and I was assigned to go to Chicago, the north side. We covered a huge area of Illinois. We moved around there, it was a lot of fun.

10

Back to the rugby, and after the opening two rounds of the URC that saw the Scarlets slip to a frustrating defeat in Edinburgh before turning on the style at home against the Emirates Lions, Sione acknowledges things are about to get tougher this afternoon when one of the tournament’s heavyweights roll into town. “Everything has to go up against Munster,” he adds. “This will be the real test for us.”

Jaz becomes social media sensation Rugby fans can’t have missed the fleet-footed exploits of former Scarlets Ladies star Jasmine Joyce on the global sevens stage in recent weeks. As a Wales player, Jaz rarely gets the chance to showcase her talents on the HSBC World Sevens Series, but a combined Great Britain team offered her that opportunity in Canada and she took it in style. On the back of an impressive performance for Team GB at the Tokyo Olympics, Joyce dazzled with six tries in Vancouver and then ran in 10 in Edmonton. She was the player of the final in both tournaments, scoring a hat-trick against USA in the latter event, as well as pulling off some sensational cover tackles in defence, one which went viral on social media platforms when she tracked back 80 metres to pull off an amazing try-saver.

Scarlets open home account in style with bonus-point win

SCARLETS SCARLETS Vs EMIRATES Vs MUNSTER LIONS

Scarlets delivered a triumphant bonus-point victory to kickstart the Dwayne Peel URC era at Parc y Scarlets, seeing off a physical Emirates Lions side 36-13. A stunning late score by wing Steff Evans capped an impressive display, much to the delight of a vocal crowd of 7,824. Wales wing Tom Rogers had earlier bagged a brace, while prop Rob Evans opened the scoring within five minutes. Fly-half Sam Costelow delivered an assured performance with a 16-point haul, while the outstanding Sione Kalamafoni picked up the man-of-the-match award with a display packed with power and aggression. Before kick-off, Scarlets paid tribute to the 22 players who had sadly lost their lives during the Covid pandemic, as well as other fondly-remembered members of the Scarlets family. The home team flew out of the blocks, putting pressure on the Lions in the back field. After earning themselves a closerange scrum, the forwards went through a number of phases before loose-head prop Evans powered over from close range. Costelow converted, then opposite number Jordan Hendrikse pulled three points back for the visitors with a long-range penalty. However, it wasn’t long before the Scarlets were celebrating their second of the night. A line-out rumble was pulled down illegally, but when the ball was spun wide, Rogers was put in space and the winger flew in at the corner.

penalties to one from Hendrikse to make it 20-6 at the break. Scarlets had to be at their defensive best in the third quarter as the South Africans threw everything at the hosts. Eventually the dam burst when Ruben Schoeman burrowed over with Hendrikse’s conversion reducing the lead to 20-13. However, the Scarlets responded strongly. The impressive Costelow landed two further penalties, then a brilliant counter-attack from deep, sparked by replacement Dan Jones, saw Scott Williams, Ioan Nicholas on his 50th appearance - and Jon Davies combine to put Rogers over for his second. With the home crowd in fine voice, the Scarlets pressed for the bonus-point score, which was delivered in style by Evans, who sliced through midfield and then turned on the afterburners to cross in the dying seconds.

Costelow nailed the touchline conversion and despite the Scarlets having chances to score a third try before the break, the fly-half extended the lead with two further

Leigh Halfpenny kicked a record-breaking nine penalties, but Scarlets were denied at the death in a thrilling opening 2020-21 PRO14 clash with Munster at Parc y Scarlets. The Wales and Lions full-back beat the previous best jointly held by Stephen Jones and Byron Hayward. His nine kicks also equalled the PRO14 record for penalties in a game and earned Halfpenny the Guinness player of the game award.

LOCATION limerick, ireland

Beaten at the final hurdle last season by their age-old rivals Leinster, Munster wear the look of a side determined to claim their first piece of silverware in 10 long years.

28

Throw in one of the most dependable scrums in the competition, the gnarly presence of veteran back-rower Peter O’Mahony and the international quality of Keith Earls and Andrew Conway and you can see why some are tipping Munster to go one step further this season.

That 16-6 loss at the RDS will have stung Johann van Graan and his squad because for long periods of the campaign they looked ready to snatch the crown off the champions. WIth Springbok lock RG Snyman having made a welcome comeback following knee surgery and compatriot Damian de Allende set to return to Ireland from Rugby Championship duty, the Munstermen possess a side bursting with pedigree.

The three-time champions have opened the campaign with back-to-back victories over the Cell C Sharks and DHL Stormers at Thomond Park, although Munster had to fight back from a 15-0 deficit against the men from Cape Town before running away with the contest in the second period.

Scarlets fans, of course, will know all about the talents of 2021 British & Irish LIon Tadhg Beirne, but

The giant Springbok spent all but seven minutes of his debut season with Munster recovering from a major knee injury. The World Cup winner has made an instant impact since returning to fitness and highlighted his power and handling ability with a try at Thomond Park last weekend.

One of the breakthrough players of the 2020-21 campaign. Coombes’s powerful carrying and eye for the try-line earned him a deserved Test call-up for Ireland over the summer. A go-to player to get his side over the gainline. Scored 15 tries in 22 appearances last term.

One of Munster’s favourite sons has made his way back home following a successful spell in Paris with Racing 92. The 2013 Lion plays with a swagger and ambition that makes him a constant threat to any defences. Take your eyes off the winger at your peril.

Huge congratulations to one of our player sponsors Michael Beynon who became the first person in Wales with Downs Syndrome to complete the actual London Marathon. Michael’s business Coalpit Welsh Cakes sponsors Scarlets back-rower Iestyn Rees and with his family is a season ticket holder, travelling down from Wrexham for home matches. So far, Michael, together with his teammates, stepdad Stephen, former PA Katie Jones and friend Ffion Edwards, has helped raise over £16,000 for MENCAP. Recently, the 26-year-old also supported the Rotary Club of Llanelli raising £2,000 for Mencap Cymru.

45

We had a great turnout in our Oil 4 Wales Business Club for last weekend’s opening URC match against the Emirates Lions. More than 300 guests packed into the Quinnell Lounge to enjoy our awardwinning hospitality as well as listen to All Blacks great Sean Fitzpastrick and Scarlets stars Rhys Patchell and Johnny Williams take part in a Question & Answer session. THOUGHTS FROM WE’VE BEEN HERE BEFORE. A MONTH AGO, 12-A-SIDE, A NEW FORM OF RUGBY WAS LAUNCHED AMID GREAT FANFARE. THE AIM IS TO MAKE RUGBY MORE ENTERTAINING AND AT THE SAME TIME RAISE MONEY. Nearly 140 years ago, when rugby was very much in its infancy, the Scarlets committee had come up with a very similar idea which they thought would change the game and bring in more fans. For the first decade it must have been tedious to watch even when the Scarlets played. Originally there were 20 players in each team, most of them forwards. There were a few half-backs and three full-backs. The most successful tactic seems to have been the forwards dribbling the ball and hacking the shins of the opposition. This changed in 1877 when new rugby rules reduced the players to 15 which gave backs more freedom to run, benefitting teams like the Scarlets who preferred an open game. A feeling still persisted that the game should be made more exciting. Similar thoughts existed in the Borders region of Scotland when two butchers invented sevena-side which is now an Olympic event.

47

The Scarlets committee wanted to go further. After all, Llanelli had a track record in inventing new sports. A few decades earlier John Graham Chambers, who was born in Llanelli House in the town, had written the rules of boxing and was one of the founders of modern athletics. There is now a plaque of the forgotten Mr Chambers on the wall of Llanelli House. ‘Well if Chambers can do it so can we’, thought the ambitious Scarlets committee. So in 1886 they launched a nine-a-side rugby contest. It was to be played under Welsh Rugby Union rules with 10 minutes each half. The aim was to make rugby a running spectacle and for that spectators were to be charged sixpence each. Sadly, the committee’s ambition was not matched by the supporters and the idea was quietly dropped. It might have had something to do with the Scarlets having a successful side at that time and showing

glimpses of the wonderful back play that was to make them famous. So 15-a-side it remained with seven-aside as a kind of other game mostly played by schools and specialist international sides. It remains to be seen whether the new 12-a-side idea will happen. It certainly has got some big business backers. Perhaps it’s biggest effect should be for the normal 15-a-side game to raise it’s entertainment value, particularly after the recent turgid forwarddominated Test series between the British & Irish Lions and South Africa. The Scarlets showed last week that they intend to play open rugby. Let’s hope that will continue in today’s game with Munster. If rugby becomes watchable again, then the 12-a-side idea could disappear, just like nine-a-side did all those years ago.

buchanan’s

Former Scarlets and Wales prop Anthony Buchanan has brought out an autobiography ‘The Buck Props Here’. Here’s an excerpt from the book, recalling a tale prior to the Scarlets 2002 European semi-final in Nottingham. “Two years later we reached the semi-finals once more and faced the English Cup kings, Leicester, at the City Ground, Nottingham. I had a phone call a couple of days before the game from the organisers saying that they wanted myself, Gareth, and Scott Quinnell to attend a press conference in Nottingham on Thursday afternoon. ‘Are you serious?’ I asked. ‘It’s going to take us four hours to drive up there, for an hour’s press, and then another four hours coming home. We’re not going to do it.’ ‘It’s written into the agreement. You are contracted to attend press conferences and will receive a heavy fine if you don’t attend,’ was the reply. I said, ‘You can do what you like. We’re not coming,’ before adding, ‘The only way you’re getting us up there is if you send a helicopter.’

48

‘I will ring you back,’ he said. He called back ten minutes later and said, ‘Right, we’ve got a helicopter to pick you up.’ On the Thursday morning we climbed into the helicopter which had touched down in Stradey and off we went. The pilot was an Australian and was typically laid-back. He was quite chatty and told us that he regularly flew the TV presenter Gabby Logan around the country. I was surprised to see that he was following the motorways to navigate, and when we approached Birmingham he pointed out some chimney stacks and said, ‘When we get there, we turn left.’ We arrived in Nottingham and he touched down on the halfway line of Nottingham Forest’s ground. We climbed out, made our way inside for the press conference, came back out and got into the helicopter again, all within 90 minutes. We took off and the pilot said, ‘Sorry guys, I have to land for fuel.’

for your country – helping them to a third place in the inaugural Rugby World Cup and

securing a Triple Crown isn’t a bad return!

‘Where the hell do you fill up a helicopter?’ I thought to myself. We went to East Midlands Airport where he filled up and paid with his credit card. He took a different route on the way back. We crossed the Malvern Hills, and the Brecon Beacons came into view. It was fantastic. Gareth and I were sat in the back and Scott was up front with the pilot. I had been given a camcorder by the BBC to shoot some footage and the pilot turned to me and said, ‘Turn that camera off and we will have a bit of fun.’ I complied and the pilot took us on a ride the like of which I had never experienced in my life. He nosedived down towards the Carmarthen Fans and skimmed the surface of the lake, Llyn y Fan Fawr, with the nose seemingly a couple of feet off the water. If you don’t know the area, the lake is at the foot of a mountain which rises up like a green wall, and the pilot banked the helicopter on its side as we

reveals the remarkable journey of how he went from someone who refused to play the game in school to being a firm favourite of the Stradey Park faithful, becoming the last coal miner to play for Wales and culminating in sitting at the very top table as a member of World Rugby.

The fascinating story of the last collier to play for Wales

09/09/2021 14:35

All I could hear was Scott screaming in the front and Gareth and I were hanging on for dear life. There was a rambler on the mountain top who dived to the floor as we came flying over the top! I doubt that the biggest rollercoasters in the world would have come anywhere near to what we had just experienced. We then picked up the M4 and made our way back to Stradey. I couldn’t believe how far rugby had come: from local rivalries to Europe-wide, highstake competitions in such a relatively short space of time.” Anthony Buchanan’s autobiography ‘‘The Buck Props Here’ (Y Lolfa) is also available in Waterstones, WH Smith or online at the Y Lolfa website and Amazon.

Media update: Fitness latest and challenge of Munster

SCARLETS Vs MUNSTER

FROM THE

Head coach Dwayne Peel spoke to the media head of today’s URC round three clash with Munster at Parc y Scarlets. Here is what he had to say … What are your thoughts on the performance against the Lions? DP: “It was definitely a step forward from Edinburgh, which was pleasing. We weren’t where we want to be and it wasn’t the finished article, but it was definitely a step in the right direction. We talked after the Edinburgh game how we want to play and there were some nice touches. I thought we left a few tries out there and weren’t as clinical as we could have been, but it was a definite improvement, as it was defensively. We looked comfortable in our sets and showed real hunger and determination in their 22 to keep them out.” Will your Lions contingent be involved this weekend? DP: “Three will be available. Liam Williams has come down with appendicitis and he has had an operation to have his appendix removed. He is back in the club, it is just unfortunate timing for him and for us that he’ll be out for this block of games.”

50

What did you make of Munster last weekend? DP: “It was typical Munster, they could have been 20 points behind in the first half because the Stormers played some great stuff. Munster managed to dig in, get a try before half-time and relied on their power game to score tries and get the win in the end. We are expecting a physical battle, they will be buoyant coming here and ready to come after us physically. That is the challenge for us, we respect that and know it is a step up in intensity this week.” What is the challenge of playing Munster? DP: “They are an 80-minute team and rarely get pumped – it is important we match that intensity for the whole game. Munster won’t go away and that is a focus for us. Many a side would have been beaten in that first half after coming under that type of pressure. We also have to cut out the errors and improve our indiscipline from last weekend. If that happens again, Munster will put the ball in our 22 and we will be defending all day.”

ALBERT TANNER CEFNogwr

SCARLETS Vs MUNSTER

y gair ‘FALLE EICH BOD CHI FEL FI A LLAWR ARALL YR UN MOR FRWDFRYDIG YNGLYN Â CRICED YN YR HAF AG YDYN NI AM RYGBI YN Y GAEAF. Os felly, mae’n debyg eich bod naill ai wedi dilyn (neu wfftio – yn dibynnu ar eich agwedd) y gystadleuaeth griced newydd yr haf diwethaf, yr Hundred. Rhaid i fi gyfadde’ mod i’n amheus iawn ar y dechre ond erbyn y diwedd o’n i wedi twymo rhyw gymaint ati. Sy’n profi, am wn i, nad odw i’n hen fuddy duddy traddodiadol llwyr. Wel, os gellir credu’r cyfrynge ma’ rygbi, neu o leia’ rhai pobol oedd yn arfer bod yn flaenllaw ym myd rygbi, am ddilyn llwybyr tebyg gyda rhywbeth o’r enw Rygbi12. Rhywbeth fel hyn fydd y fformat. 6 blaenwr a 6 cefnwr. Mae’n siwr taw’r blaenasgellwyr fydd yn gorfod ildio’u lle ymysg y blaenwyr ond fel mae’r bel yn mynd i mewn yn gam i’r sgrym allech chi gael gwared ar y bachwr hefyd. Dau hanner o gwarter awr yr un. Bydd 8 tîm neu franchise o 24 wharaewr yr un wedi’u prynu mewn ocshwn o brif wledydd rygbi yn bennaf ynghyd ag o leiaf 2 wharaewr o wledydd yr ail haen fel Ynysoedd y Môr Tawel, UDA, Canada, Georgia ac yn y blaen. A bydd rhaid cynnwys un wharaewr rhyngwladol o dan 20 oed. Mae’n debyg bydd newidiade i rai o’r rheole hefyd: cic adlam i drosi cais; dim ond unwaith gellir ailosod sgrym – bydd cic rhydd yn dod wedyn (anodd gweld pwy fydd yn cael y gic os oes neb ar fai); dim hawl mynd am y pyst

65

o gic gosb am drosedd yn y sgrym. Bydd y cyfan drosodd mewn 3 penwythnos ar ddiwedd Awst a dechre mis Medi 2022, a hynny’n gyfangwbwl yn Lloegr yn ôl pob tebyg. Y cwestiwn sylfaenol yw a oes angen cystadleuaeth arall pan mae’r calendr rygbi yn llawn fel ma’ pethe? Rhwng y cynghreirie domestig, cystadleuaeth Ewropeaidd, y Chwe Gwlad, Cwpan y Byd a theithiau’r Llewod rwy’n amau a fydd modd ffito cystadleuaeth arall mewn heb gael effaith ar y rhai sy’n bodoli’n barod. Heb sôn am edrych ar ôl iechyd a buddianne’r wharaewyr. Mae’r bobol sy’n gwthio Rygbi12 yn disgrifio’r peth fel “cyflym, cyffrous, arloesol a difyr” a fydd yn denu cynulleidfa newydd i’r gêm. Odi rygbi saith pob ochor neu’r WorldTens wedi llwyddo i wneud hynny? A cyn i chi ddweud dim, wyddwn i ddim am fodolaeth y WorldTens tan yn ddiweddar chwaith. Gwendid mawr yr holl syniad i fi yw bod fformat wedi’i seilio ar franchises yn torri’r cysylltiad rhwng y tîm a’r gymuned leol. A ma’ pawb yn cofio pa mor anodd oedd y trawsnewid o glybie i ranbarthe yma yng Nghymru gyda rhai cefnogwyr yn troi’u cefne ar y gêm. Rygbi12? Thenciw ond dim thenciw.
