CHAIRMANS MESSAGE

SCARLETS Vs BENETTON

SIMON WELCOME BACK TO PARC Y SCARLETS FOR THE FINAL MATCH OF THIS OPENING BLOCK OF UNITED RUGBY CHAMPIONSHIP FIXTURES. There is no hiding from the fact that it has been a tough couple of weeks for us, but I know the coaches and players are working hard behind the scenes and are determined to put in a performance in front of our loyal fans before the international break. On that note, congratulations to the 10 Scarlets named in the Wales squad for the forthcoming autumn series. As a club, we are proud of being able to provide so many players to international rugby and congrats as well to Sam Lousi who is set to feature for Tonga over the coming weeks. It will be a special night for three of our Scarlets stalwarts who hit personal milestones when they take the field. Aaron Shingler (200 appearances), Rob Evans (150) and Steff Hughes (100) have given so much to the jersey over the years and they deserve a great reception here tonight. The three of them epitomise what we are about, local boys who have gone on to represent the Scarlets with pride. With Covid-19 still very much part of our lives I’d like to thank you for all your understanding regarding the new Welsh Government legislation regarding NHS COVID passes. It is our utmost priority to make sure we deliver a safe and enjoyable environment for our supporters, players and staff and these measures help us ensure we can do that. Rebooting the stadium after 18 months without fans has been a challenge, but in tandem with our friends at Crys 16 Supporters Trust and the Scarlets Supporters Group, we are working through a number of issues and will use the forthcoming break to continue to

5

put improvements in place. As always, feedback, good or bad, is needed as we work to make the Parc y Scarlets match-day experience the best possible one for our fans. Tonight, we have offered tickets to employees of Carmarthenshire County Council, including key workers and teachers who worked so tirelessly for our community throughout the pandemic. For those here for the first time, a warm welcome and hopefully we will see you back here again soon. As you may have read, we will now be heading to South Africa at the end of November to take on the Cell C Sharks and Vodacom Bulls in rounds six and seven and while that presents another massive challenge for us on the field, it is great news for the competition that our new South African rivals can finally open up their stadiums again. Finally, we have had a couple of recent additions to the Scarlets family with Samson Lee and Leigh Halfpenny celebrating new arrivals. Huge congratulations to you and your partners. Welcome to the players, officials and supporters of Benetton Rugby and let’s hope for a great game of rugby to sign off this exciting first period of URC action. Diolch Simon

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD COACH

SCARLETS Vs BENETTON

DWAYNE After a tough couple of weeks when we haven’t had the results or performances we wanted, all the group, players and coaches are hurting. But everyone here firmly believes in what we are doing and we won’t let the defeats to Munster and Leinster define us. These are still early days in the season and there have been flashes of what we can offer in the opening four games of the URC. As coaches and players, we have a desire to play and we have told the boys this week that we are backing them to do that. Hopefully, we can finish this block of matches with an important win against a strong Benetton side and then we have a break, get a few players back from injury and build towards heading out to South Africa to take on the Sharks and Bulls on their own patch. This evening sees three of our players achieve special milestones in a Scarlets jersey — Aaron Shingler with his 200th appearance, Rob Evans with his 150th and Steff Hughes, who brings up a century.

7

All three are local boys, who have grown up dreaming of playing for the Scarlets. They are fantastic role models and a real inspiration to the youngsters in our region. Congratulations to all three and their families; it is a proud night for them all. Well done, as well, to the 10 Scarlets who have been named in the Wales squad for the autumn series of matches. The boys all wished them well when we arrived back from Dublin on Saturday night and it will be great to see them representing the Scarlets on the international stage against the best in the world over the coming weeks. To our fans, thanks again for your continued support. It means so much to us all, particularly during challenging times. That 16th man on the terrace and in the stands can make a huge difference.

Diolch Dwayne

AARON SHINGLER AS A FORMER GLAMORGAN AND ENGLAND UNDER-19 INTERNATIONAL CRICKETER, AARON SHINGLER IS ACCUSTOMED TO SPECIAL MILESTONES. This evening, at Parc y Scarlets, the popular back-rower raises his bat for 200 not out, an achievement he thought would be out of his reach barely 18 months ago.

there was so much fluid around my knees but nobody really knew what was going on. I was getting it drained and all this yellow stuff was coming out, it wasn’t nice.

Shingler’s battle back from a serious medical issue is testament to the determination and steely edge of a player who has been a mainstay of the Scarlets for the last decade or so. Here he takes up the story.

“The worst point was when I couldn’t get out of the bed in the hospital and I had to be wheelchaired to a scan. It was diagnosed as reactive arthritis and it took me months to be able to walk pain free.

“It was bizarre really,” he recalls. “It was in the summer last year and I was about to start pre-season. I had a little bit of pain in my foot. I had a game of golf and couldn’t walk after it. I came in and saw the physios and they thought that I must have torn something.

“I went from being pretty fit to being totally unable to move.”

“We didn’t think much of it. We treated it and thought it would get better. As the days were going on, I started getting pain in my ankle, which spread to my knee on the left side. “Then it went to my right side, then it was in that knee. Next thing you know, I couldn’t walk. I couldn’t get out of bed. I had an operation in hospital because

8

Aaron is still taking medication to control any possible inflammation, but after returning to fitness in March, tonight’s landmark game will feel that extra bit special, particularly with his family present in the ground. The 34-year-old will run out with his three children, daughters Lottie (4) and Aila (6) and most recent arrival Ronnie, who was born when Aaron was battling just to get some mobility back again.

He admits there were some tough times, praising his wife Katie for helping him through it. “I wasn’t even thinking about rugby back then, I was thinking: ‘Am I going to be able to walk?’” he recalls. “I couldn’t go out with the kids, I couldn’t do anything because there was too much pain. “It was probably a lot worse for Katie. She was meant to be recovering from a cesarean and she was trying to look after me, a newborn and our two girls. “It was a pretty rough time to be honest with you.” Thankfully, Shingler has put all that behind him and is back doing what he does best at the heart of the Scarlets pack. Of course, his route through professional rugby to this stage hasn’t been your typical one. Aaron was an accomplished fast bowler on the books of Glamorgan, touring alongside current Englnd international Mooen Ali as part of a talented England U19s squad. Switching from the leather ball to the oval one, he played for his home village Hendy before being picked up by Llanelli’s semi-pro team — a stunning individual try in a cup final at the Millennium Stadium highlighting his potential.

10

SCARLETS Vs benetton

He made his Scarlets debut as a replacement against the Dragons at Rodney Parade in 2008, quickly building a reputation as an athletic runner and one of the best line-out operators in the Welsh game. Along the way, there have been title triumphs — he was man of the match in the 2017 Guinness PRO12 final win over Munster in Dublin — and 27 Wales caps, including a World Cup in Japan in 2019. And ironically, after starting out at second row, he has found himself back in the boilerhouse this season. “I prefer six, but I’ll play wherever I’m asked to,” he smiles. “It’s been a challenge to get up to 200 games, but obviously now I’m here it’s going to be good for my family to come down and watch me play. I’m chuffed just to be able to play again.” After successive heavy defeats to Munster and Leinster, Scarlets will be looking to Shingler’s experience and nous to get them through the challenge of Benetton in Llanelli this evening. Before that, Shingler will no doubt receive a warm ovation from the Parc y Scarlets faithful. After what he has been through, there is no more deserving of the acclaim.

scarlets TEN SCARLETS NAMED IN WALES SQUAD Ten Scarlets have been named in a 38-man Wales squad for the forthcoming Autumn Nations Series 2021 campaign. Ken Owens, Wyn Jones, Liam Williams and Gareth Davies are four of eight British & Irish Lions in Wayne Pivac’s party and the quartet are joined by Ryan Elias, the uncapped WillGriff John, Johnny Williams, Jonathan Davies, Ryan Elias, Kieran Hardy and Johnny McNicholl. Wayne Pivac’s 2021 Guinness Six Nations Champions will face the top three ranked teams in the world in New Zealand, South Africa and Australia in this year’s series. In addition to Australia, Wales will face a second of their 2023 Rugby World Cup opponents, Fiji, during the campaign, as Pivac continues his preparations for the global tournament. WillGriff John is set for his longawaited Test debut after cruelly missing out on a first cap prior to the first Covid lockdown. There is also a recall for McNicholl, while Johnny Williams has proved his fitness with an impressive comeback following shoulder surgery.

12

SCARLETS TO PLAY ROUNDS 6 & 7 IN SOUTH AFRICA Scarlets’ matches against South African opposition in rounds six and seven of the United Rugby Championship will be played on South African soil, tournament organisers have confirmed. Contingency plans to play these games in European locations were at advanced stages due to South Africa’s presence on the UK travel red list which would have required teams to quarantine for 10 days after their two-game tours. However, since South Africa’s removal from the red list, lightning-fast actions have taken place to ensure that all four teams are ready to host their opponents from the northern hemisphere on home soil. This ensures that each team will have the integrity of playing all of their nine home games in South Africa. It means the Scarlets will take on the Cell C Sharks in Durban on Saturday, November 27 then head to Pretoria to face the Vodacom Bulls at Loftus Versfeld (pictured) on Friday, December 3

Leinster too strong for Scarlets in Dublin

Leinster proved too strong at their RDS fortress, beating the Scarlets 50-15 in Dublin.

SCARLETS SCARLETS Vs EMIRATES Vs benetton LIONS

particularly close to their own line.

It was a second successive defeat against Irish opposition for Dwayne Peel’s side, who conceded seven tries to the champions, who ran away with the match in the second period.

It was hooker Ronan Kelleher who touched down for the hosts’ first try from a line-out rumble on 23 minutes and it wasn’t long before international front-row colleague Andrew Porter was celebrating a second, the prop diving over from short-range.

Scarlets created two lovely tries for Johnny McNicholl and debutant Tomas Lezana - one in each half - but there were too many errors that allowed Leinster to dominate possession and territory.

The Scarlets dug deep to hold out until first-half stoppage time, but after conceding a series of scrum penalties, they saw referee Marius van der Westhuizen head between the posts to award a penalty try.

It was the Scarlets who were first on the scoreboard after just two minutes; fly-half Sam Costelow nailing a penalty kick after the home side had infringed inside their 22.

Trailing 22-8 at the break, the visitors desperately needed a strong start to the second period, but it was the home fans celebrating a fourth and bonuspoint score soon after the restart with flanker Caelan Doris touching down following a Kelleher break.

Opposite number Johnny Sexton levelled things up, but the Scarlets stunned the RDS on 17 minutes with a superbly-crafted score. Centre Johnny Williams did the damage with a half-break and back-door off-load which found Ioan Nicholas on his outside; the full-back then drew the final defender to send Johnny McNicholl haring into the corner. However, the rest of the half belonged to the home side who starved the Scarlets of possession.

But back came the Scarlets with another try for the highlights reel. From a scrum just outside the Leinster 22, a combination of replacement Dan Jones, Jonathan Davies and McNicholl put flanker Lezana over for his first try in Scarlets colours. Dan Jones converted, but Leinster weren’t going to allow the Scarlets any way into the contest as replacements Cian Healy and Dan Sheehan (twice) added to the home try tally.

That meant the visitors having to spend long periods in defensive mode,

FLASHBACK Paul Asquith stretches over for the match-winning try in a remarkable Scarlets comeback against Benetton in 2017 which kept the Welsh side’s European hopes alive. Scarlets were trailing 28-21 with four minutes remaining before Steff Evans brought the home side back into it with a try which was converted by Rhys Patchell to level the game. Evans then turned provider as he kicked ahead for Asquith to chase, and the centre gathered to score the winning try. Scarlets went on to reach the Champions Cup semi-finals that season.

22-18 and they followed that up with a dramatic lastgasp victory over Edinburgh courtesy of a stoppage-time drop goal from the boot of 19-year-old replacement Leonardo Marin.

Without a win in last season’s Guinness PRO14, Benetton appear to have found a crock of gold at the end of their Rainbow Cup triumph.

LOCATION Treviso, Italy

The Italians have been a side transformed over the last four months, firmly putting aside the miseries of a 16-game winless streak in the truncated 2020-21 cross-border competition. A dominant victory over the Vodacom Bulls in the Rainbow Cup final at their Stadio Monigo home was a joyous ending to Kieran Crowley’s time in charge in Treviso. Now, under new stewardship in the shape of former England, Saracens and Harlequins coach Paul Gustard, they have already made their mark in the United Rugby Championship. The opening round saw Benetton see off the DHL Stormers

honours Rainbow Cup 1st (Overall Champions)

They almost pulled off another second-half comeback against the Ospreys last weekend, only to fall short 29-26 after trailing at one stage 26-7, but their new-found confidence will make Benetton a real threat on West Wales soil. Once again the men from Northern Italy provide a large chunk of the Italian national squad with 14 Benetton players, including uncapped prop Ivan Namer, selected by new Azzurri coach Crowley for their Tests against New Zealand, Argentina and Uruguay in November.

BRAAM STEYN

One of Italian rugby’s chief strike weapons. The Australian speedster is now firmly established on the international stage on the back of some outstanding performances at domestic level. Has scored 24 tries in 55 appearances in this competition.

Scarlets supporters might remember the South African flyer from his spell with the Cheetahs in the PRO14. An elusive runner with an eye for the try-line, Smith will give the Italians an extra option out wide. Is equally as comfortable at wing or at full-back.

One of the most experienced internationals named in the Azzurri squad for their November series of Tests, the back-rower from South Africa’s Eastern Cape has long been a go-to player for Benetton and Italy with his tireless workrate with and without the ball. Will be a leader in the forward exchanges.

COVID PASSES - SCARLETS v BENETTON OCTOBER 22

SCARLETS V benetton How do I obtain a NHS COVID pass? Supporters who are fully vaccinated can prepare by signing up for their NHS COVID pass. For the latest information on how to obtain an NHS COVID pass go to https://gov.wales/ get-your-nhs-covid-pass To register for the digital pass, you must have a photographic ID. If you do not, you must request a paper NHS COVID pass which can take up to 10 working days to arrive.

In line with Welsh Government legislation, Scarlets supporters will need to present an NHS Covid pass to attend our home match against Benetton Rugby. The legislation in Wales was introduced on Monday, October 11. We are legally bound to comply and this will encompass all supporters regardless of their vaccination status. It means that people aged 18 and over who are attending terraced stadiums with more than 4,000 people, such as Parc y Scarlets, MUST present one of the following in order to attend: A digital NHS COVID pass A paper NHS COVID pass Proof of a recent negative Lateral Flow Test. Scarlets Chief Operating Officer Phil Morgan said: “The COVID passes have been introduced as legislation to ensure those who attend mass gatherings in Wales are able to enjoy their experience in a safe environment and we are urging fans to either download the pass or apply for a paper one as soon as they can before our game against Benetton on October 22.”

35

Paper NHS COVID Pass Supporters who are over 18 and fully vaccinated, but do not have access to obtain a digital passport through a computer, tablet or smartphone, you can request a paper NHS COVID pass. To request a paper NHS COVID pass, call 0300 303 5667. This service is available seven days a week, between 9am and 5pm. GPs cannot provide this service. Supporters who need to use this service are recommended to do so as soon as possible. NEGATIVE LATERAL FLOW TEST RESULTS Supporters over the age of 18 who are not fully vaccinated must have a negative Lateral Flow Test (LFT) result taken 48 hours prior to attending Parc y Scarlets. Within the LFT kit, there are clear instructions on how to take the test and record the results. It is imperative that supporters do not bring their physical tests with them to the stadium but to record the LFT result with the NHS website. When the result has been recorded, you will receive a text message and email from the NHS. This is deemed as a valid NHS COVID pass for entry. LFT kits are available to order online from the government website. They are also available to collect from local libraries and most pharmacies.

Scarlets are delighted to renew their commercial partnership with West Wales-based LHP Chartered Accountants.

THOUGHTS FROM ‘WOE, WOE AND THRICE WOE’ WAS THE FAMOUS LINE FROM THE CLASSIC TELEVISION COMEDY SERIES UP POMPEII! The show had a soothsayer who always predicted the end of the Roman Empire.

Jenkins, then the inevitable happened. Albert and several other players retired.

After two heavy defeats it isn’t quite a Roman tragedy for the Scarlets, but there is certainly a lot of woe going around.

There was a run of bad defeats and another Llanelli scribe took up the cudgels, this time writing for the South Wales Press. “There is something radically wrong. The decline of Scarlet rugby is very marked. It is only too apparent that there was a ‘do as you please’ and ‘play your own way’ attitude from the team.”

Back-to-back drubbings against the two strongest teams in Ireland doesn’t make it easy for the team or fans. However, as we’ve seen many times before the Scarlet story has a habit of repeating itself. At the turn of the 20th century and three years after the Scarlets had their best season ever, losing only one, game disaster struck. Many players of that famous side had left, retired or gone to rugby league and star player Rhys Gabe had joined arch rivals Cardiff. The result was that in the 1900-1901 season the Scarlets lost more games than they won. The scribes were full of doom and gloom writing: “Rugby in the town has been at a low ebb for several years now. Public interest has been on the wane for the last few seasons. This has been the worst season in the history of the club.” Not a man to mince words that scribe on the Llanelli Mercury. Within a season the team had managed to recover. So much so that the same scribe wrote: “There have been a striking succession of remarkable victories which has restored the tarnished prestige of the club.” The doom-mongers shut up shop for a few decades, but the pens came out again in the 1929- 30 season. In the twenties the Scarlets had enjoyed a golden era led by legends like Albert

47

The committee held a special meeting with the players and it was reported that there was a “heart to heart talk”. Yet again the team improved and had a good run of seasons in the decade leading up the Second World War. Fairly modern times did not escape the wrath either. After another golden era in the 1970s the inevitable happened and great players like Phil Bennett and Ray Gravell retired. The 1983-84 season was not good and the Scarlets lost 18 games. Dark clouds were gathering and the prophets of doom returned. “We have been also-rans and bridesmaids since the 1970s and haven’t had a say in any honours. Players are just going through the motions” said no less a person than the club chairman. There was woe in abundance. The next season the Scarlets beat Australia and won the Welsh Cup. Let’s hope the current soothsayers of woe will soon have to eat their words and the team bounces back — just like they have done many times before.

Media update: Fitness latest and challenge ahead of benetton

SCARLETS Vs benetton

FROM THE Dwayne Peel spoke to the media ahead of this evening’s United Rugby Championship clash with Benetton. Here is what he had to say … Another heavy defeat last weekend, but fair to say a different performance from Munster? DP: “I think that’s fair. We are obviously not happy with the end result, that is the bottom line. I thought there were some areas of improvement, there was an energy about us, especially early in the game and for that first half hour we competed well. We felt at half-time we were definitely still in the game and were disappointed we didn’t allow ourselves to get back into our game-plan. We have had a tough two weeks and have spoken about that as a collective but we are focused on where we want to go. It won’t be that these two games define us, it is important we continue to work hard and look to improve week on week.” How have the boys reacted to the defeat in Dublin? DP: “There was a different disappointment after Leinster. There are 10 guys who have gone away to Wales; there is a different group and boys have trained hard and are deserving of an opportunity this weekend against Benetton. They are a good bunch, they are together. They are obviously hurting from the last two weeks and should be, but it is the start of the season, we are trying to put new things in place and we are looking to improve with every game.” What are your thoughts about having to travel to South Africa after the autumn Tests? DP: “It is difficult, Wales play Australia and then we play in Durban a week later.

50

Then coming back from Africa we are straight into Bristol in Europe. That period is testing but exciting; it is exciting to go and play in Durban and play in Loftus against the Bulls, that for our players will be a huge experience and we have to embrace that. It is an awesome rugby experience, it is going to be difficult, but that is what the league poses now.” What about your long-term injury concerns? DP: “We were hoping Josh Macleod and Patch would be involved at some point up to now, unfortunately they haven’t made it. We are talking a couple of weeks, touch wood, hopefully they will be back shortly.” What can the Scarlets fans expect on Friday night? DP: “There have been flashes of what we can offer in these four games. We have to show the desire to play and keep backing ourselves to play. For me it is about getting better at what we do. We have told the boys this week that we back them to play, we have shown we can and we are backing them to keep doing it. We have to have a firm belief in where we are going.” Aaron Shingler will make his 200th appearance on Friday. What are his qualities? DP: “It is great for him and I’m really pleased for him. Shings was here when I was playing here, he was playing for Llanelli back then, having come from cricket and I remember he had no meat at all on him, there’s not a lot on him now! He has been a great player, he has a great attitude and nobody trains harder than him.”

SCARLETS Vs benetton

Mark Orders TIME-TRAVEL BACK TO JULY 23, 1976, WITH A YOUNG BOY DELIVERING NEWSPAPERS NEAR HIS HOME AT THE PEAK OF THE HOTTEST SUMMER IN 250 YEARS. The previous day had been spent watching the fourth Test between England and the West Indies on TV, with Roy Fredericks and Gordon Greenidge putting on 192 for the first wicket. Even now, the wonder of their stroke play remains etched in the mind: brilliantly cavalier, with the ball being hit in the air without a shred of fear. The paper round took a long time to complete the next morning. “Greenidge and Fredericks laid a carpet of golden runs,” wrote Clive Taylor in The Sun. I can still remember reading that line while sitting on a wall 50 yards from my house, the morning sun already starting to warm the streets. Words and the media always fascinated me. But how relationships between the media and sports people have changed over the years. This from someone who once travelled with Neath to Brive, when merely surviving such an experience left you not so much in line for a journalist-ofthe-year-award as a VC. There were trips with Swansea, too. And here’s the thing: players at the time trusted the press. They knew them because they spoke informally on pitches after matches and in clubhouse bars. If they didn’t like what had been written there’d soon be an opportunity to clear the air. Llanelli were ultra-friendly, too, no one more so than Anthony Buchanan, the stalwart prop who became one of the great team managers. Stuart Gallacher had a ferocious bark, but if he trusted you he could be beyond helpful.

53

It all goes back to trust. Sadly, today there aren’t so many opportunities to get to know players. Nowadays, ringing a team’s star fly-half tends to be frowned upon. Hoops have to be jumped through with arrangements strictly controlled. Quality takes a hit and so do bonds between players and journalists. Shooting the breeze with Chris Wyatt in the aftermath of Llanelli’s 49-3 defeat by Stade Francais in Lille amounted to a shared experience. Talking over Zoom at a midweek press call where the screen might freeze at any moment isn’t the same. The requirements of digital media are different from what did the job in the days when print ruled. Issues can fester nowadays and sometimes be aggravated by social media pile-ons. More’s the pity. New school has many pluses. But old school did things well, too. It really did.

Y tro diwethaf i’r ochr Eidaleg teithio i Lanelli oedd nôl ym mis Chwefror eleni pan drechodd y tîm cartref yr ymwelwyr o 41 pwynt i 17 yn y gystadleuaeth PRO14. Er i’r bythefnos ddiwethaf profi’n heriol i ni fel cefnogwyr y Scarlets, mae’r cyfnod yma yn mor bwysig i ni i gadw’r ffydd ac i ddangos ein cefnogaeth boed hynny ar-lein, trwy fynychu’r gemau neu trwy wylio ar y teledu. Mae clywed eich bloedd yn y stadiwm yn hwb enfawr ac ar ôl treulio cymaint o amser yn chwarae mewn stadiwm gwag, mae’n hen bryd i ni godi llais! Wrth i ni fyw mewn oes ddigidol lle mae popeth ar gael ar blaen ein bysedd, mae hyn hefyd yn rhoi’r cyfle i ni i rannu ein sylwadau ar blatfform cyhoeddus. Caredigrwydd ac annogaeth yw’r negeseuon mwyaf pwerus fe allwch rhannu yn ystod yr adegau yma. Mae’n amser yna o’r flwyddyn eto pan rydym yn clywed cyhoeddiad carfan Cymru a’r tro yma rydym yn llongyfarch 10 Scarlet sydd wedi’u cynnwys yng ngharfan Wayne Pivac ar gyfer gemau’r Hydref. Newyddion cyffrous iawn i ni gyd wrth i ni ffarwelio’r bois ar ddechrau’r wythnos a dymuno pob lwc i’r tîm cenedlaethol gyda’r ymgyrch. Wythnos diwethaf, fe ddathlwn ddiwrnod Shwmae Su’mae 2021, diwrnod i hybu’r iaith ac i annog siaradwyr Cymraeg a di-gymraeg i ddechrau eu sgyrsiau gyda ‘shwmae’. rhanbarth, a dwi’n teimlo’n ffodus iawn i gael y cyfle i gyfrannu at raglenni trwy’r Gymraeg. Gobeithio gwnaeth ein ‘geirfa Scarlets’ ar gyfryngau cymdeithasol ysbrydoli cefnogwyr i gychwyn sgwrs yn y Gymraeg neu i roi cynnig ar ein rhestr. Rhaid tynnu sylw hefyd at neges fe dderbyniwyd ar ein cyfryngau cymdeithasol rhai wythnosau yn ôl o dafarn yn Bordeaux. Roedd y neges gan dafarn Magnus yn ymestyn croeso i gefnogwyr y Scarlets a fydd yn teithio draw i Ffrainc ar gyfer y gêm ym mis Ionawr. Mae’r neges erbyn hyn wedi derbyn bron 700 o ‘likes’ a 74 o ‘retweets’! Dyma ddangos gwir bwer un neges! Fi’n siwr bydd teulu’r Scarlets yn falch iawn o gyrraedd Bordeaux. Ond cyn y daith hynny, mae gêm heno ac mae’r bois yn barod amdani. Cofiwch i ganu, gwaeddu a chwifio eich baneri o ble bynnag fyddwch yn gwylio’r gêm, ac yn bwysicach oll, mwynhewch!

y gair DYMA NI AR DROTHWY GEMAU RHYNGWLADOL YR HYDREF. DIOLCH FYTH NAD OES GEMAU CYNGHRAIR; A DIOLCH FYTH FOD Y CRYSE DUON WEDI SETLO AM DDIM OND £2 FILIWN I DDOD I GAERDYDD! ALLECH CHI FEDDWL BOD RYGBI’N BODDI MEWN ARIAN. Nôl yn yr wythdege – 1983 i fod yn fanwl gywir - pan oedd ein tîm rhyngwladol ddim cweit ar ‘i gore, penderfynodd Cymru whare yn erbyn Romania am y tro cynta’, a hynny mâs yn Bucharest. Ma’ unrhyw un sy’n ddigon hen i gofio yn gwbod bod ni wedi cael crasfa go iawn o 24 pwynt i 6. Bydde sôn am i gêm ei hun yn llawer rhy boenus ond ychydig wythnose nôl digwyddes i ddod ar draws ychydig o hanes beth ddigwyddodd oddi ar y cae gan un o’r 6 wharaewr newydd i ennill eu cap cynta i Gymru. Gan fod Romania mor dlawd roedd gan wharaewyr Cymru “goody bag” o siocled, chewing gum, papur ysgrifennu, pensile a bathodynne i’w rhoi i’w gwrthwynebwyr. Unwaith oedd yr awyren siarter dros dir Romania fe’i hebryngwyd hyd nes glanio gan awyrennau o lu awyr yr Arlywydd Ceauşescu. Er eu bod nhw’n poeni am safon y gwesty cyn cyrraedd, doedd e ddim yn rhy ddrwg ond bod y tîm yn gorfod cerdded i westy arall i gael bwyd. Rhag ofn bod y bwyd yn wael roedd pob wharaewr wedi mynd â bwyd ei hunain ond gan nad oedd yr un ohonyn nhw’n gallu coginio roedd hynny’n wastraff. Yn y diwedd bu rhaid iddyn nhw fyw ar fara a’r pethe bwytadwy yn “goody bags”!

gweithio fel morynion yn y gwesty. Dyma i chi gyfieithiad o Saesneg gwreiddiol yr hunangofiant. “Roedd y morynion mor dlawd fel bod nhw cynnig rhyw i chi am bris gwirion o isel. Jyst cerdded mewn i’r ‘stafell a chynnig eu hunain. Dim y peth gore os oeddech chi’n paratoi braidd yn nerfus ar gyfer eich cap rhyngwladol cynta. Duw a wyr be’ fydde nhw wedi gwneud am far o siocled! Roedd un o’r bois yn cael cawod a dyma’r forwn yn stripo’i dillad bant ac ymuno ‘dag e dan y dwr. Am ffi, wrth gwrs”. Wn i ddim faint o goel fedrwch chi roi ar yr hanes hwn. Falle bod yr awdur wedi gorliwio ychydig er mwyn gwneud y gyfrol ychydig yn fwy diddorol (achos digon diflas oedd y llyfr ar y cyfan). Yr unig beth ddweda i, ddigwyddodd dim byd tebyg i fi pan o’n i’n whare i Abercwmsgwt Seconds ers llawer dydd. Fel dywedes i, crasfa gafodd Cymru. Ac i rwto halen yn y briw fe ddwedodd capten Romania – y mewnwr Mircea Paraschiv - ar ôl y gêm taw ei wrthwynebydd mwya’ peryglus y diwrnod hwnnw oedd y Ffrancwr o reffarî, Jean Claude Yche, am saco’i fys yn ddamweiniol i’w lygad e!

Ond yr agoriad llygad mawr oedd effaith y tlodi ar y merched oedd yn
