Our Story

A passion for travel and exploring distant cultures led Carl to a dusty market in North-West India India in 1999.

He returned with an old satchel and some vintage treasures for family and friends. They were an instant hit.

Carl was inspired to return to India in 2006 to search for artisans practising traditional craft skills to recreate the iconic British satchel, make leather journals and restore old furniture. Fast forward 16 years and Scaramanga is now a renowned sustainable lifestyle brand designing ranges of classically styled leather bags for men and women and a unique collection of vintage furniture and interiors sourced by Carl from around the world.

We always have a fresh selection of unique and exclusive vintage furniture and interiors for our loyal customers, who include props buyers for the 17 Hollywood and major UK films our bags and interiors have featured in to date. We’re a small family-run business dedicated to giving the best customer service, trading ethically and sustainably. We’re passionate about vintage-styled leather bags, accessories, unique interiors and ... eating chocolate!

Our Scottish design team works tirelessly to design classically styled handmade bags and accessories that are as individual as you are. Our unique Hunter leather ages perfectly.

We take familar elements and subtly modify them so they feel new and totally timeless.

Sharukh, 25, has been working with our bag makers for 6 years. He is a team leader managing a group of up to 4 people. He’s been working with leather for 8 years. He started as a team junior and has been quickly promoted to a team member, senior team member then 2 years ago to team leader. Each team is responsible for making 50 bags from start to finish. Sharukh is studying parttime for his final year for a degree in Political Science at a local college.

The Beauty of HANDMADE

Our bags are handmade by a small leather craft business in Kolkata. We’ve been working with them for 12 years. Their highly skilled bag makers use traditional tools and techniques to expertly craft our bags. Their experience and knowledge of working with leather adds to the character and quality of each piece.

Our Hunter leather is tanned exclusively for us. We use natural oils, waxes and dyes to ensure fewer chemicals are used and to give you a more natural leather that looks even better with age.

We support age-old traditional skills like bookbinding. Hitesh has been making leather journals for more than 25 years from his workshop in Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. He was one of our first suppliers more than 16 years ago. Read more about Hitesh

Mr Ram is from Barmer, a town in the Thar desert in Rajasthan, India. He’s been a carpenter for 37 years. He comes from a long line of skilled artisans - his father was a carpenter, as was his grandfather, great-grandfather... His brother is a carpenter and so is his son. So working with wood is pretty much in his blood. We’re priviledged Mr Ram restores our furniture. Read more about how we buy and restore furniture.

We salvage furniture and homewares that might otherwise end up in landfill or being burned. We sympathetically restore each item and bring it back to life ensuring it keeps its original and unique character and charm. They are then ready to be enjoyed for another generation.

Buying vintage really does help. By bringing old furniture and interiors back to life, we’re making a positive impact on our environment by contributing to the ‘circular economy’.
