How You’ve Made A Difference Every donation, whatever its size, helps make a real difference to local patients. As well as our major public Appeals, here are just a few examples of how your support has provided other state-of-the-equipment for our hospitals. l An exceptional legacy enabled Scannappeal to fund a second cardiology catheter laboratory. This £400,000 gift has helped significantly reduce the waiting time for local patients to have their pacemakers fitted. It also means procedures for more complex devices can now be performed at Wycombe hospital, rather than patients having to travel out of area. l The Burns Care team with a CO2 laser which has helped patients like Lara with her recovery from a rare flesh eating infection: ‘I am so grateful for the introduction of this laser treatment which is making a huge difference to my mobility and the flexibility of my scars which affected my day to day activities.’ This type of laser is only available at a few hospitals in the UK. l 6,500 pathology samples a year can be analysed quicker with better detection of mixed infections thanks to an advanced microbiology system funded by Scannappeal. l The ENT team with a specialist laser used for delicate ear surgery.

Because the laser does not touch the tissues, no vibration is passed on which can permanently damage hearing. More precise surgery can be performed which limits potential complications and improves surgical results. Patients no longer have to travel to Oxford for surgery and waiting times for this type of day surgery has been reduced.

A Memorable Gift

Your gift can go to a specific hospital or clinical area that is important to you. Our Trustees, who work independently of the NHS, will ensure it is spent entirely on advanced medical equipment and in accordance with your wishes. l £1,000 could provide a specialist probe for a scanner to help identify the precise location of cancer tumours. l £3,000 could provide a portable ECG machine to assess patients in their homes. l £10,000 could provide a colonoscope to investigate potential tumours.

How Your Support Has Helped Alison, aged 51, was recalled to the breast screening unit where Scannappeal has funded digital and 3D equipment to improve the detection of breast cancer. She wrote:

‘I received my mammogram invitation letter and wasn’t going because I couldn’t feel anything, except a small lump which turned out to be a swollen gland. I went for the mammogram and three days later I was asked to go back because it had shown a small cancer in my left breast. I had ultrasounds and 8 biopsies taken straight away. In a matter of days I was called back when Mr McLaren explained that I needed surgery and what they were going to do. I went on to have more mammograms, three surgeries and four weeks of radiotherapy before it was confirmed I was clear of cancerous tissue.

I was told I wouldn’t have felt that small cancer for 18 months, which emphasises the importance of mammograms and the equipment used to detect cancers at the earliest stage.’

At the end of 2017 we marked the official conclusion of two stages of our Cancer Fighting Fund which will help over 20,000 patients a year.

In the endoscopy department at Stoke Mandeville hospital we funded a C-Arm fluoroscope which allows live x-ray images to be seen without the need of moving patients to another department. For patients with pancreatic, oesophageal and stomach cancers, this means treatment, including placing of stents and tissue sample removal, is much quicker.

We also finished a fouryear campaign raising £500,000 to fund state-of-the-art digital and 3D breast cancer screening equipment. The breast screening service has been transformed by the new equipment and cancers are more likely to be identified much earlier.

Our Appe Small Projects Programme Our small projects programme runs alongside our public Appeals for the purchase of smaller items of equipment in different clinical areas. This funding typically ranges from £5,000 – £25,000. Current projects include:

Improving detection of skin cancer We are raising funds to purchase a dermoscopic camera for each hospital. These are for a new non-invasive technique which helps identify early signs of melanoma not usually visible to the naked eye, radically improving the detection of skin cancer.

Our thanks to Hospital Saturday Fund, Princes Risborough and Great Missenden Rotary Clubs, Amersham & Chesham Lions Club, Marlow Lodge and the Roland Callingham Foundation for their donations, leaving £6,000 still needed for this project.

Helping patients following a stroke This project is for equipment for the Speech and Language Therapy Department to help patients with difficulty swallowing or impaired speech following a stroke or with Parkinson’s disease, cancer of the throat, muscular dystrophy or head injuries.

A portable laryngoscope with mini screen objectively measures swallowing and allows clinicians – via a scope down the patient’s nose – to see whether items are being swallowed into the patient’s oesophagus or airway. This will enable an objective assessment of swallowing rather than the current bedside assessment which is subjective and not always accurate. Providing this equipment will increase the capacity and speed of the current service.

Thank you to the Kop Hill Climb for their continued support by donating £4,000 to this project.

Helping Hospitals in the Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust area Amersham • Stoke Mandeville • Wycombe • Community Hospitals This is for £265,000 to fund five state of the art microscopes to radically improve surgery on the eyes, helping restore and improve vision. Patients with cataracts, bleeding inside the eye, macular degeneration and detached retinas will benefit from this new technology.

TRIUMPHANT CLOSE OF TWO APPEALS!

Thank you to all those who have helped us raise the funds for the third microscope including Dave Grolimund, men’s captain at Weston Turville Golf Club, Tring Lions Club, Aylesbury Rotary Club and Tesco in Amersham.

Appeals

£130,000 has now been raised for the Urology department towards a 3D theatre system to treat patients with prostate, kidney and bladder cancers. We are also fundraising for a laparoscopic scope and urodynamic testing equipment to complete this Appeal.

Our thanks to the Urology team who raised over £15,000 by doing a 30 mile sponsored walk along The Ridgeway, and to Mandy Bartholomew from Beaconsfield Golf Club who raised over £4,700 during her year as ladies captain.

This £185,000 Appeal was set up to fund two latest generation scanners to diagnose heart disease with detailed real time 3D moving images of the heart. The first scanner, for Amersham hospital, is now operational. We need to raise £65,000 to complete this Appeal and purchase the second scanner, for Wycombe hospital, which also has Polarvision that allows a 3D reconstruction of the beating heart to be projected in front of the surgical team.

There are several individual items on the ‘shopping list’ ranging from £1,500 to £15,000 covering a variety of component parts such as a monitor for the 4D cardiac imaging system, parametric imaging tool, Polarvision monitor, 3D monitor kit including 3D glasses, a specialist probe for blood flow and a velocity 4D probe.

Thank you to Wycombe cardiology team who donated £300 from their Heart Day at Wycombe hospital.

PATRON TOM KERRIDGE RAISES FUNDS

Scannappeal Patron Tom Kerridge shared snippets of his professional and personal life during our ‘An Audience with Tom Kerridge’ event.

Many of the audience were surprised to learn that he was a child actor appearing in television shows like Miss Marple and London’s Burning.

Tom fondly remembered his first role in the kitchen as ‘pot washer’ before moving on to work in many five-star kitchens and opening The Hand & Flowers in Marlow – the only pub in the UK with two Michelin stars.

When asked why he had chosen to support Scannappeal, Tom answered ‘I know I am in a very fortunate position and feel incredibly supported by the community around me. I wanted to do something close to home Scannappeal is so local, but so far reaching. The charity puts a huge effort into making phenomenal things happen.

It is a privilege to be part of the Scannappeal family.’

Tom spent time signing books, chatting to supporters and provided a delicious treat for guests with canapés, a personal gift from Tom and the Hand & Flowers team.

Scrub Run Our annual family Fun Run is back on Sunday 29 April.

The event has two distances, a 1k around the grounds of Amersham Cricket Club, and a 5k for runners looking for a greater challenge across mixed terrain. Fancy dress is optional and we encourage runners of all ages and abilities to take part - you decide how fast or slow to go and we guarantee a huge cheer at the finishing line and a well-deserved medal.
