and welcome to our latest edition of Update.

With the help of our wonderful supporters we continue to make a dramatic impact to hospitals in Bucks. In this edition we are pleased to introduce you to our phenomenal supporter Phil Richards, and also celebrate the fantastic work of Billy Gallacher who has been a supporter of Scannappeal for over 30 years.

We have enjoyed a busy summer with a packed programme of events and now have a wonderful selection of festive events to look forward to, including Seasonal Swing and our annual Christmas Concert.

All of this activity means that we are making significant progress on the targets of our current appeals. This equipment is going to make a substantial difference to the diagnosis and care local patients receive and none of this would be possible without your support Best wishes for the festive season and thank you for your support.

Raising a glass to fundraising success Rebellion Brewery, based in Marlow Bottom, generously threw open their doors again in July for their bi-annual charity weekend raising a record £65,000. Glorious weather proved to be the perfect backdrop for over 4,500 people who attended over the weekend to enjoy the beer, live music and a fantastic atmosphere.

Tim Coombes, from Rebellion, said: “The aim of the weekend is to say thank you to all our customers and to raise as much as we can for Scannappeal. As always, the event is entirely free and the money is raised from attendees donating whilst at the event and staff donations.

A huge thankyou to all those who came along and to our staff who worked tirelessly to set up and run the event in order to raise such a fantastic amount of money.”

Karen Shardlow from Scannappeal added: “We love working with Rebellion and are delighted by their ongoing support of our work.

As a business they have a deep-rooted generosity which is reflected in all that they do.”

PHENOMENAL FUNDRAISING BY PHIL When supporter Phil Richards pledged to raise £100,000 for the Bucks MRI Appeal, we knew he had the determination to make it happen, but little did we know he would make it happen in less than 6 months.

Phil has personally benefitted from equipment funded by Scannappeal and so knows first-hand how generous donations are turned into lifesaving equipment.

In 2017 following a stage 3 kidney cancer diagnosis, Phil had a kidney removed using equipment purchased by Scannappeal and decided then that he wanted to ‘give something back’.

Phil, and colleagues from Tesco, immediately set themselves the challenge of climbing Snowdon. Less than 6 months from treatment he returned to Wycombe hospital to present a donation of over £50,000 to the medical team who operated on him.

Fast forward to 2019 and Phil has once again inspired colleagues and friends from around Tesco to join him in his mission to make fantastic things happen.

Many miles have been clocked up to reach a further £100,000 with Phil leading a team walking the Jurassic coastline; cycling 100km across the Chilterns and more recently walking from Salisbury Cathedral to Stonehenge.

Tesco stores from across the UK have also got involved with many choosing to personally support Phil by holding events in store or within their local community.

William Baxter, Scannappeal Chair of Trustees, has passed on his personal thanks to Phil “Phil is one in a million; he has such positivity for life, he inspires us all and we are so proud to have him as part of the Scannappeal family. We are enormously grateful for his dedication and all he is doing to support our work.”

Natasha Adams, Tesco HR Director, shared the company’s pride in all Phil has achieved: “It is fantastic to hear how all of Phil’s efforts and those of his closest colleagues are going to make such a huge difference.

I have known Phil for many years and have been saddened by his illness. I have also been totally inspired by his attitude, positivity and energy in doing all he can to fight the disease – not just for himself but for others. We are all very proud of him.”

Phil is keen for others join him in his aim to ensure our local hospitals have the best possible equipment: “Living with cancer leaves very little to the imagination.

The truth about life is that you never really know what you are about to come up against or deal with, unfortunately that’s just reality. I’ve had some tough choices to make in my life and the biggest choice I’ve made is that I won’t be living with cancer; cancer will be living with me! What I do know is that out of even the saddest of situations, positive things can happen and this is where I can absolutely make a difference.

My motto has become ‘you don’t have to be a Doctor to save a life’, so I ask you this question whether you know me or not.... Are you prepared to be a lifesaver?”

Wycombe works begin Thanks to the generosity of supporters to the Bucks MRI Appeal, we have reached the half way point of our fundraising target.

WITH OVER £750,000 OF THE £1.5 MILLION GOAL REACHED, WE ARE THRILLED TO SHARE WITH YOU THAT WORK HAS BEGUN AT WYCOMBE HOSPITAL. A temporary mobile scanning unit was delivered to the site in September to ensure the Radiology team is able to continue scanning and the ‘retired’ MRI scanner was removed at the beginning of October.

All of the works are being meticulously managed by Bucks Healthcare NHS Trust led by Deputy Director of Strategy and MRI Project Lead, Dan Leveson, who shared his joy at the project going ‘live’: “to get to this stage has taken a tremendous amount of time and planning by the project team. We are therefore delighted to be on track to install an incredible state of the art scanner which will be operational for local patients by early next year. None of this could be done without the support of Scannappeal and their fundraising appeal which has received overwhelming support from the local community.”

Spine surgery has advanced immeasurably over the past 30 years.

Much of this is because of imaging, and mainly MRI. The new scanners will make patient waiting times dramatically shorter and make it easier and more accurate to pick up treatable pathology in our patients with spinal problems. We will be able to give faster answers to the thousands of patients who suffer with back problems each year, whilst having the capacity to rapidly diagnose urgent cases.

There are two big advantages for stroke patients. The first is the image quality and speed of acquisition which means more patients can be scanned, more sequences per patient giving more information for diagnosis, and better image resolution so able to detect more subtle abnormalities.

Secondly, the new MRI will be much more comfortable. It will be wider so fewer people will feel claustrophobic, much quieter, and much faster with a brain scan taking a third of the time of the current scanner. All this means that it will be tolerated much better, particularly by someone who has had a recent stroke.

We are looking forward to the installation of our new MRI scanner as it will be top of the range equipment and the first of its kind in the UK. This machine will have facility for MRI breast biopsy which will be very beneficial to our local population, avoiding the necessity to travel to London for this procedure. Breast MRI also plays an important role in the monitoring of women with high risk or strong family history of breast cancer.

We increasingly use cardiac MRI to diagnose and give information on heart conditions, especially when other tests are inconclusive. Up to date and fast MRI equipment is needed to take good, detailed images of the heart as the heart is constantly moving and contains fast flowing blood. Our new state of the art scanner will dramatically reduce time spent in the scanner for patients and improve the images we obtain and use to plan treatment.

The new truly multiparametric MRI scanner will greatly improve the accuracy of the scans enabling much more precise management of men suspected of having prostate cancer. This will enable the confident reassurance of those with a negative scan but will also ensure that those whose scan is positive are treated in the optimum fashion.

Breast Biopsy Appeal milestone in sight Within 12 months of launch the Breast Biopsy Appeal is close to reaching £200,000 by the end of this year. This £350,000 Appeal will fully equip a dedicated biopsy suite within Wycombe Hospital, which is home to the Bucks Integrated Breast Unit.

3D mammography technology will mean targeted biopsies will be carried out quicker with pinpoint accuracy, significantly reducing the time patients need to wait from diagnosis to treatment.

GIVE THE GIFT OF GOOD HEALTH THIS CHRISTMAS CAN YOU HELP US RAISE £10,000

BY THE END OF THIS YEAR? If 400 people pledge a Christmas gift of £25 we will reach £200,000 and be one step closer to providing this much needed equipment for the Bucks Integrated Breast Unit.

Critically, this equipment will help in diagnosing very small cancers at an early stage which will improve prognosis and save lives.

My Story My name is Kate Wright, I am 48 and live in Chesham. When I was 40 I found a lump in my left breast and was referred to the breast surgeons at Wycombe Hospital and given an appointment within a week. This was the start of my journey with breast cancer and I went on to have scans, mammograms, surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy.

The scans and surgery have all been at Wycombe Hospital, as have all my follow up appointments, and I have been cancer free since I finished my treatment seven years ago. There have also been two occasions when I have needed to have a bone scan which were organised through the breast unit and done at Wycombe Hospital.

My experience of the service provided by the breast care team and the access to the diagnostic equipment has been all positive. Having cancer can be very timeconsuming and being seen at my local hospital has been great and the staff have always been kind, caring and informative.

I really appreciate the importance of Scannappeal and the specialist equipment they fund. We are incredibly lucky to have a charity in this area that works so hard to provide essential equipment for our hospitals.

Thanks to ‘Best of Breast’ John Lewis and Partners Huge thanks to customers of John Lewis and Partners, who used their ‘green tokens’ to support Scannappeal earlier this year. Dawn Stokoe, John Lewis Partner & Community Liaison Coordinator, visited the Breast Unit at Wycombe Hospital to present a cheque for £840. We were thrilled to share with Dawn how the money will be used and the positive impact it will have on local patients. #CommunityMatters

Trish & JohnBoy Williams Over £3,000 was raised thanks to family, friends and neighbours who enjoyed this year’s Paddock Car Display hosted by Trish and JohnBoy Williams. Car owners displayed their cars and enjoyed a fish and chip lunch, finished off with homemade cakes and a raffle. Trish and JohnBoy have now raised over £5,000 within 2 years to support our work.

Caron Keating Foundation We are thrilled that the Caron Keating Foundation has supported our Breast Biopsy Appeal with a donation of £3,000. This family run charity was set up by Gloria Hunniford in memory of her daughter, Caron. It makes a considerable difference to many individuals and families dealing with cancer through assisting small cancer charities.

Waitrose Stores in Bucks Huge thanks to Waitrose stores in Aylesbury and Chesham who supported us through their community matters scheme. We received £340 from Aylesbury and £634 from Chesham meaning every green token really will make a difference to local patients. #CommunityMatters

PACE

P.A.C.E (Parveen’s Annual Cancer Event) raised over £2,000 this year. A sponsored walk which was originally organised by Parveen Sheikh, is now continued by the P.A.C.E Committee in her memory. New events have been added such as ‘Summer BBQ’, ‘Posh Picnic’ and a ‘Quiz Night’ (which is being held on the 21 December 2019). Celebrating their 16th year in 2019, they have raised nearly £50,000 and we are hugely grateful for their ongoing support.

John Waller A huge congratulations to John Waller for completing the Prudential Ride London in August. John cycled 100 miles and smashed his original fundraising target of £600 raising an incredible £1,215!

FUNDRAISING FAMILY

ANNUAL GOLF DAY ELVIS HAS LEFT THE BUILDING

Buckinghamshire Golf Club played host to our 21st annual Golf Day which saw 18 teams take part in a 4 ball stableford competition.

Long term supporter Billy Gallacher, otherwise known as Elvis to his local fan base, has hung up his microphone after three decades of fundraising for Scannappeal.

Team entry, sponsorship, fundraising activities and an incredible auction raised over £25,000 on the day.

Billy and his band ‘The Bonquas’ have organised regular events through the years raising over £45,000 in support of Scannappeal’s work.

Lisa Trivett, Scannappeal Director, thanked Billy with a recent presentation of a certificate and said ”We are so very grateful for all that you and your band has done in support of Scannappeal over the years. It is a sad day for us and all your fans that Elvis will no longer be performing but we thank you so much for all that you have achieved.”

MARATHON MAN Huge thanks to our very own ‘marathon man’, Phil Catchpole, who took on this year’s London Marathon in support of the Bucks MRI Appeal. Phil is BBC 3 Counties sports commentator and took on the challenge when some friends persuaded him it would be fun! As well as hoping to raise as much money as he could for Scannappeal, Phil’s main target was to finish the marathon before it got dark! Thank you Phil for raising £3,486 – we hope you enjoyed your post marathon treat of fish and chips and a pint!

LOCAL STUDENTS GLORIOUS GARDENS LEND A HAND LEAP OF FAITH Paul Gardner, Alan Cooling and Pam Wise joined the Scanna Skydive Team this year. Their leap of faith raised £1,800 towards the Bucks MRI Appeal.

Thank you to the owners of our 2019 Open Garden collection who shared their beautiful gardens with visitors this summer.

Our wonderful volunteers were in force to help with cake making and serving, selling of plants and so many other things which make each event so unique and successful. Collectively the gardens raised over £8,000.

We really enjoyed working with a group of enthusiastic young people who had signed up to take part in the National Citizen Service(NCS) this summer. The students aged 15-17 were a delight to work with and raised over £900 in support of the Bucks MRI Appeal - fantastic work!

SUPER FUNDRAISING Huge well done to Amy Mills who, aged just 8 years old, completed the Hazlemere Super 5K run in aid of our Bucks MRI Appeal.

We were delighted to visit Amy at school and share with the entire assembly the difference Scannappeal makes for patients in Bucks. Amy and her mum, Beccy, raised £940.

LONGSTANDING SUPPORT Our annual private donors event held in June was held at Wycombe Hospital. Hosted by Scannappeal Patron Countess Howe, and Deputy Chair Jon Greenland, longstanding supporters saw demonstrations of equipment that Scannappeal has funded in recent years. Our visitors were able to see demonstrations from the breast screening, paediatrics and midwifery, urology and cardiology departments. Our thanks to all those who helped raise £20,000 from this event.

SUCCESS FOR INAUGURAL

July saw the launch of ScannaRide 100, a brand new event in partnership with Oakman Inns. Forty cyclists set off from the Polecat Inn, Prestwood, to tackle our scenic but challenging 100km route around the Chilterns including a well-deserved stop to refuel at the Betsey Wynne in Swanbourne. Riders were welcomed back to the Polecat Inn by family and friends and treated to a mouthwatering, complimentary BBQ prepared

by Oakman Inns Chef Director, Ross Pike.

Grant Wattleworth, Community Engagement Manager from Oakman Inns cycled as a member of the Oakman Inns Team and said: “We loved being part of the ScannaRide100 and I certainly enjoyed the personal challenge of riding 100km. We are really pleased to support Scannappeal and help deliver a great event for our local community.”

Sincere thanks to Oakman Inns for offering our riders such a warm welcome and for supporting this brand new event. We are really pleased to announce Sunday 19 July as our date for 2020 which will see a second shorter route introduced to give cyclists the option of taking on a 100km or 50km challenge. BABIES BENEFIT We are grateful to the organisations that have helped us complete our Jaundice Meters project. Over £30,000 has been donated to purchase eight jaundice meters, one for each of the Community Midwife teams.

The service can now be extended into the community enabling care closer to home for women and their families.

RAISING DOUBLOONS Three local organisations in High Wycombe joined forces to run a pirate themed event for the Bucks MRI Appeal raising £3,200.

Our grateful thanks to the BARTS Society, High Wycombe Inner Wheel and the Rotary Club of High Wycombe whose fundraising will go towards the Wycombe MRI scanner and will be match funded bringing the total raised, including via the Pirates Justgiving page, to £7,574.

ONLINE AUCTION You can help the Bucks MRI Appeal by making a bid in the Beaconsfield Rotary Club’s online charity auction. Bidding starts on 26 October until 8 December and items being auctioned are a mixture of goods, services and vouchers generously donated by businesses in Beaconsfield and the surrounding area. Every book has a value When you visit our bookshops you will find a wide range of pre-loved books from fiction to biographies, cookery to travel and everything inbetween. Only books in excellent condition make the shelves but everything that is donated to us has a value and helps with our fundraising. Our volunteers presort donations to ensure no donation is wasted. Our bookshops aren’t limited to books alone, you will also find greetings cards, jigsaw puzzles, handmade knitted items and Christmas cards.

Did you know...all paperback books are sold at just £1 offering a real saving vs shopping online or buying brand new. Last year our book sales raised over £24,000.

The next step in expanding our book sales income includes setting up an Ebay shop which will allow us to sell special edition books, and other donated items. Also, watch this space for news of our plans to open a brand new bookshop at Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

In celebration of a life Some supporters kindly choose Scannappeal to receive donations in lieu of flowers in memory of a loved one who has died. Although it is always sad to receive money under these circumstances, these donations have great meaning by allowing a loved one to be remembered and making a lasting difference by helping others. You can also choose where this money can be spent – for a specific hospital or clinical area, that is important to you or the person who has passed away.

Fiona Clark chose Scannappeal to receive donations in memory of her parents, Alan and B Williams. She explained, “Although some flowers are needed at a funeral, such as a floral tribute from the family, others will wilt and die.

Instead, by asking for donations to a worthy charity in lieu of flowers, this has created a lasting memory of my parents who were both volunteers in the Scannappeal bookshop. We chose to support the Eye See Appeal as my mother had been a patient in the ophthalmology department, attending regularly for check-ups. The donations have been used to help fund high tech equipment to help current and future generations.”

If you would like to make a donation in memory of a loved one it is easily organised. Funeral directors are usually happy to help by collecting monies on your behalf or you can set up an online giving page.

Win a Very Special Caterpillar Quilt We are delighted to launch a very special Scannappeal Raffle which has been made possible thanks to supporter Janet Nicholl who has donated a beautiful handmade quilt. Janet explained: “I met Marie Hancock and her daughter Jane Napier through the local Cross Stitch Guild. We became great friends sharing a passion for crafting. Sadly Marie passed away suddenly in 2016 and Jane lost her fight with cancer in 2018. Amongst Marie’s quilting stash was a partly completed Hungry Caterpillar quilt, which I have now completed with some help from the lovely ladies at The Bramble Patch in Weedon. It seemed appropriate to donate the quilt to charity and where better than Scannappeal who I have supported over quite a number of years.” By happy coincidence it is 50 years since The Very Hungry Caterpillar first munched its way through a variety of delicious food and into our hearts. In addition to the quilt we are also including a Special 50th Edition golden book and cuddly caterpillar.
