“Many executives believe that when they are experiencing a mental low, they will never be able to reach peak performance levels again,” explains Dr Orell Mielke, who has specialized in high-performance coaching after exhaustion and mental lows. “That is crazy, because you would never say that about a broken arm.”
By speaking openly about his own burnout, he helps de-stigmatise the subject. “I’ve gone through it – so what? I am back to high-performance,” he adds. “I would even go as far as saying I’ve never been better. I learned how to deal with stress and disappointment and can achieve even more. A huge benefit of the coaching is that it’s far more effective than spending years ‘on the couch’.”
The physician and coach, who has worked in clinical research, neurology and psychiatric departments, assures new clients that it might require patience and time, but that they can get their energy back. Something, which Dr Mielke had to learn during his own burnout. 74 |

This crisis was the reason why he then studied the subject so thoroughly. He exercised a lot in fitness training, but realised that behind the physical problems were psychological issues. When he got better after been coached himself, he noticed how much he had learned about himself. This was the beginning of his work as a coach, which also includes methods borrowed from psychotherapy. “One strategy is about intrinsically activating the behaviour, which is particularly difficult because people who are chronically exhausted lack energy and motivation.
