Architecture = art + function For the innovative young architect Christoph Aschaber, architecture is the perfect combination of art and function, creating a dialogue between tradition and modernism. Aschaber designs functional spaces with a special impact, where you do not only feel good but where everything fits perfectly, down to the smallest detail. As the son of Kitzbühel’s established successful architect Werner Aschaber, architecture has been part of Christoph Aschaber’s life from day one.“I was lucky,” he says.“Since my childhood I have always been accompanied by architecture and construction. During my studies I focused on technology and the detail. That’s why I take constructive details and their realisation already into account when I sketch. Because the right detail is crucial.” Eight years ago, he started working with his father whilst studying at the HTWK-Leipzig. “During those years my father taught me how to draft,” says Aschaber. “Something I’m very proud of today: to have learned ‘old-school’ sketching with pen and pencil.” Since 2016 Aschaber runs his own bureau, Aschaber architectura, and brings a breath of fresh air to the field. “I want to design functional spaces presented in an 86  |  Issue 65  |  August 2018

aesthetic and technically sensible outer shell,” he explains. “I’m an advocate for modest, calm buildings with traditional saddle roof, which meet today’s Zeitgeist regarding functionality and interior design. In addition, the interplay between terrain and the main orientation of the building is a crucial factor thanks to our Alpine landscape with its steep sites. In my opinion, a building doesn’t have to submit to its surroundings but can coexist in harmony with it whilst remaining an independent object.” Aschaber architectura is focused on residential construction, which often includes exclusive segments due to the Kitzbühel location. Conversions, alterations and new buildings for the hospitality industry are also part of its portfolio. Aschaber deliberately chose a small team because he values the direct exchange with his clients.“It’s the only way to really understand and get to know a client,”he adds.

The ambitious architect gets his inspiration from his daily life: “Regardless if I go for a mountain-bike ride with my wife or simply enjoy nature – that’s how I recharge and I am able to design with fresh energy and joy every day. I hope I can do my job for a very long time because whatever kind of project we develop, it always gives me absolute pleasure,”he concludes with a smile.
