Jonah heard from God. God told him to go to the city of Nineveh and warn them that if they didn’t stop doing wicked things, He would punish them. Jonah didn’t like the Ninevites. He rather wanted God to punish them, so he ran away to a boat that would take him as far away as possible. Jonah 1:1-3

God sent a storm that hit the boat. Jonah was sound asleep in his cabin. The captain woke him saying, “How can you be asleep? Pray to your God that the storm will stop!� Jonah 1:4-6

Jonah told the men to throw him overboard. He knew God had sent the storm because he had not been obedient. As soon as they threw him overboard, the storm calmed. God then sent a big fish to swallow Jonah. Jonah 1:7-17

Jonah was in the belly of the big fish for three days. While he was there, he told God he was sorry he had disobeyed Him and that he would do as He asked. Then God commanded the fish to spit him out. Jonah 2

Jonah went in to the city of Nineveh and told everyone that if they didn’t turn from their evil ways, God would punish them. The people all believed him. Even the king of Nineveh proclaimed that everyone should ask God’s forgiveness and stop doing evil. Jonah 3

Jonah then waited outside the city wondering how God would punish the people. When he realized God wasn’t going to destroy the city, he was angry. He didn’t think it was fair. God told Jonah that he had no right to be angry. God had seen how sorry the Ninevites were and He had decided to show compassion and forgive them, because He loved these people, too. Jonah 4
