Foreword

Welcome to the

Thai-Sweden Review Message by Kenneth Radencrantz President Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce

Dear Members, For several weeks we have all been talking about the Flooding. Flooding with capital F. Many people have been forced to move from their homes and many companies have closed, waiting for the water to recede and the cleanup to be started. It is a very difficult time for everyone affected! We have tried to keep our members up-dated but we have also been forced to cancel some of our activities and events due to the flooding. We do hope you understand the reasons behind it. Some Swedish companies have directly been involved in the rescue operations. For example SAAB AB in Ostersund, who, after a request from the Thai Embassy in Stockholm, has sent a team together with 300 tents and two large water purifying containers to Thailand. They can provide drinking water for 8 000 people. We have just published our “Property Guide with the aim to offer an objective guidance when buying property in Thailand. The Guide has been very well received by all parties. We estimate that 20 000 families have bought property in Thailand and they have invested about 100 billion Baht, a substantial amount of money. Apart from travel expenses, we estimate that these families also spend more than 5 billion Baht in Thailand every year. As you can see, the Swedish second home owners are important to Thailand and to many Thai communities However, many Swedish property owners do face a number of problems with leasehold, long-stay visa and not the least with the actual purchase of the property. Particularly during the past two years, the Thai-Swedish Chamber has been approached by a number of Swedish people, asking for help and guidance. The main objectives of the Chamber are to assist companies, provide information and networking but also to practise lobbying with Thai authorities. We do have some experience! For this reason the Chamber intends to constitute a Property Club within the Chamber to offer assistance with legal and financial advice, lobbying for improvement of leasehold, long-stay visa etc. We also think that we will be able offer substantial benefits of health care, insurance and SAS travel. At the same time we want to improve our service to regular company members to meet future demands but also to recruit new members. We will have more lobbying power with more members! Please contact us, if you have any ideas, how we can improve our Chamber further. Best regards Kenneth Radencrantz

Foreign Minister

Mr. Carl Bildt

on Swedish-Thai Relationship The most recent official visit to Thailand by a Swedish foreign minister was the late Anna Lind´s visit in 2000. By Steen Poulin Nielsen

N

ow Foreign Minister Mr. Carl Bildt, is hoping to visit Thailand, he says to the Thai-Sweden Review. Carl Bildt has never visited Thailand before. But one of his ancestors has. That was Counsellor Harald Bildt, who participated in the delegation when Prince Wilhelm of Sweden attended the coronation of King Rama 6 in 1911 - 100 years ago. “I have seen some of the pictures that were taken at that occasion. 2011 has been a busy year, and it’s now drawing to a close. I do hope to be able to pay a visit to Bangkok during my term as foreign minister”, Foreign Minister Carl Bildt says. The foreign minister adds, that he believes that Thailand has a long and prosperous period to look forward to, and that the relationship between the two countries and people will continue to flourish.

Strong ties between the two countries

“Sweden and Thailand have excellent bilateral relations in a wide number of areas, such as trade, political dialogue and tourism,” Carl Bildt says. “Around 350.000-400.000 Swedes visit Thailand every year and the Swedish trade with Thailand amounts to eight billion SEK, an increase with 19%

from the previous year.” “Also the Swedish import from Thailand is increasing, up nine percent from last year to now 4,4 billion SEK, and these are just a few examples of the many strands of cooperation.” Mr. Bildt adds, that he is convinced that the close ties will continue to develop in a mutually beneficial way. The strong relationship between Sweden and Thailand resulted in 2006 in the “Joint Plan of Action” under the leadership of Prime Ministers of both countries in order to strengthen the political, economic, cultural and education exchanges in the interests of their countries and of all regions. The plan was issued to run until 2009 and no new plan was issued. “The Joint Plan of Action for 20062009 generated cooperation within a range of areas both in the private and public sector, such as research, education, design, environment, defence, tourism and health care. We are currently discussing a new Joint Plan of Action for the period 2011-2015. I would very much support such a plan, given our two countries’ close ties and excellent relations”, says Mr. Carl Bildt.

Impact on democracy

At the Democracy Meeting of the Community of Democracies, held in Poland last year, Mr. Carl Bildt met

I am glad that we have a dialogue between our two countries, including on issues such as democracy and transparency. supervised to make sure it is in accordance with fundamental freedoms and human rights”, says Mr. Bildt.

Agreement on the Transfer of Sentences Persons

Foreign Minister Kasit who expressed Thailand’s wish to learn more from Sweden’s experience in democracy development, particularly in the areas of decentralization, civic participation, and transparency. It is an ongoing process between the two countries. “I am glad that we have a dialogue between our two countries, including on issues such as democracy and transparency. In addition to the meetings between us ministers, there are continuous contacts between civil servants and other representatives of our societies. The Swedish Embassy in Bangkok plays an important role in promoting and deepening these contacts, as does the Thai Embassy in Stockholm”, says Mr. Bildt. Also internal matters in Thailand was previously addressed by the Swedish minister. In 2007 he condemned the coordinated bombing attacks in the Deep South of Thailand in an official statement and he recommended that the violence was replaced by dialogue to enable a peaceful solution. “Sweden always urges parties to a

10

conflict to engage in dialogue and to find a peaceful solution. Such dialogue must involve all relevant actors in southern Thailand and in the region, including both the Thai and the Malaysian governments”, says Mr. Bildt. Later in 2007 there was some confusion in the press about sharing intelligence information about Muslim radicals exiled from Thailand. The then foreign minister in Thailand told the press, that ´Mr. Bildt has told him that Sweden was watching this group of people carefully. The Swedish authorities are ready and willing to share intelligence at our request´. Thai-Swedish Review asked Mr. Bildt if Sweden was any sharing of intelligence information about Muslim militant groups with Thailand. “International cooperation is necessary to combat serious crime, including terrorism. Such cooperation might sometimes include sharing of information, between Swedish authorities and their counterparts. Any such cooperation and sharing of intelligence information is regulated, carried out according to Swedish law, and independently

Close to 400.000 Swedes coming to Thailand every year, and a tiny part of them will stay in the country a little longer than expected, imprisoned in one of the notorious Thai prisons, recently a Swede was sentenced to life imprisonment in Thailand. Some countries has signed an Agreement on the Transfer of Sentences Persons with Thailand, but there are some differences in the details. Sweden is one of the countries with an Agreement on the Transfer of Sentences Persons. “The 1989 agreement on transfer of sentenced persons between Thailand and Sweden makes it possible for imprisoned Swedes to apply for transfer, i.e. giving them the possibility to serve parts of their sentence in Swedish prison. I welcome that we have such an agreement”, says the Swedish minister.

Visa for Thais to Sweden

Singaporeans and Malaysians does not need to apply for Schengen visa before visiting Sweden. Thais does not have such privileges. When Swedes are travelling to Thailand they obtain a visa on arrival and Thai-Sweden review asked the foreign minister how he regard the situation. “Visa policy is fully harmonized in the Schengen area. Most third country foreigners must obtain a visa before entering the Schengen area. The visa requirements are not always reciprocal. We expect the Commission to present proposals by the end of this year on which new countries to possibly add on the list of which third country nationals who do not need a visa”, says Mr. Carl Bildt.

ow Head of Clinical Pharmacology Laboratories at Mahidol University in Bangkok, he has been managing the department

since 2003. “Two years into my PhD studies I got involved with Prof. Nicholas White, then director of the research unit, because my laboratory in Sweden was developing methods that were useful in this part of the world. The first visit was coincidental as me and my wife, Anna Annerberg were initially going to Thailand for vacation but ended up staying helping their unit for a month. I was in the middle of my PhD and my wife was at the time working for a pharmaceutical company in Borlange,” says Niklas Lindegardh. Prof White, was pleased with the dedication we were showing and asked us to return full time as soon as my PhD in Sweden could be completed. “I defended my PhD thesis and we returned to Bangkok. We started out here in a very small room with only two people, and new equipment that I managed to get a good deal at in Sweden before we left. My wife helped setting up the quality management system in a regulatory environment. This has helped a lot in making things efficient but also to get acceptance from international organizations. We early produced some very good results where we were able to improve some studies performed by European laboratories of highest standard (GMP’s). The results gave us a lot of attention from the pharmaceutical industry and we got a high reputation and a lot of work,” the doctor says. Growing the facility from two people to the current 26 has been a long,

challenging but interesting journey for the Swede. The laboratory is getting work from Malaria studies mainly Asia and Africa but also studies from other countries all over the world too. Quite often they will receive samples in order to quantify drug concentration. ”The department works with both Universities and commercial partners. Commercial partners mean that we are able to find funding for our research. If the industry wants to do a study we will only participate if we consider that the study can be of general interest. The other thing we do is to make sure, that no matter what our studies might show, the results will be published. We will never do a study if we cannot publish. The Tropical Medical Department also works with influenza but much less now than when the H5 and the H1N1 pandemics were ongoing in South-east Asia. Now more than 95% of our time is spent on Malaria with less than 5% on the influenza. Niklas Lindegardh tells that the research unit has study sites throughout Asia; multiple sites in Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Bangladesh, India and Vietnam. It is study sites doing clinical trials, to look into how to optimize the dose when treating patients with Malaria. One of the questions asked now is how to treat patients with both HIV and Malaria. According to the doctor it is impossible to foresee how drugs interacts why clinical trials are needed. Such trials are mostly done in Africa where the HIV/Malaria combination is common. Development in Malaria Treatment According to Lindegardh one of the most effective drugs against Malaria now is the so called artemisinin drugs. It is a

In Thailand the incident rate for Malaria is very low. Even if you work in the rainforest its is still unlikely that you get Malaria

family of compounds originally coming from a plant in China, Artemisia annua (annual wormwood). It is very tricky drugs as they are quite unstable. They give great trouble in the manufacturing process as they degrade easily. But the efficiency is very high, the most potent drug class available today. They were used in China for a long time before any European or American pharmaceutical company got involved. Now Novartis is using one of the compounds in their product, the Coartem/Riamet. The Italian drug manufacturer, Sigma-tau is using another compound from the class in their Eurartesim combination product. “What is very interesting is that if these drugs would have been developed through the western system from the beginning, they would probably not have survived the drug development process. By intake this drug affects itself, its own metabolism so when measuring the drug in the blood the patient will have higher concentrations after day one compared to a few days after treatment. It is very strange and very difficult to deal with. These issues together with the instability means that the western development

14

www.swecham.com

systems would have killed the drug in an early stage of development.” The drug made out of wormwood kills parasites very effectively. After only two days of treatment all parasites are dead. It is up to 10-fold more potent than other drugs on the market, but the drug only stays in the body for six to eight hours, then it is gone. It is like placing a little bomb in the body taking care of the parasites, the doctor explains. It is nowadays always used in combination with another slowly eliminated drug which lingers in the body for weeks preventing new attacks up to 30 days or more. “This drug class can be regarded as the best solution for Malaria treatment right now and in the near future. New synthetic compounds are being developed that could prolong the time that the drugs work in the body from the six to seven hours up to maybe two days. It means that he current dosing at twice every day can maybe be reduced to once a day or maybe just a single dose treatment.

Much More Malaria in Africa “In Thailand the incident rate for Malaria is very low, the chance of getting Malaria

is much lower than most countries in Africa. If you go out in the rainforest and work there it is still unlikely that you get Malaria. Even If you expose yourself to such conditions you might get one infectious bite per year, in Africa it will be one per day. A huge difference. When going to Thailand you usually don’t need to take prophylactic drugs”, says the doctor. The Tropical Medicine department did a study in Thailand in a border area targeting workers in the rainforest. The incident rate of Malaria was around 1 infection per person and year if no drug were taken and when taking a combination drug just once a month the incidence went down to 0.03 infections per person and year. All people can get Malaria as it is not host dependent. In Africa semiimmunity to Malaria in adult is common; they might get the disease but are not affected since their immune system takes care of the parasites. The big problem is for small children, they do not have this immunity to Malaria and often they are not getting proper treatment when sick. Travelers and people in Asia are due to the low frequency of

TSCC - Thai Swedish Chamber of Commerce exposure not immune and can get quite sick when getting Malaria.

Managing the department

At the moment there are 26 people working in the department; four Swedes (plus a Swedish Post-doc temporarily), a Dutch and a South-African, and the rest Thais. Lindegardh has been recruiting everyone personally. “I have been keen to follow my own approach of leadership by being outspoken and frank. It is against the Thai way of doing it but as our organisation has grown slowly people have learned to accept this. If I was coming into a new organisation I am aware that this would be impossible. It’s a European mentality, I know, but as long as we have a mix of foreigners and Thais it works for us. It is not in Thai nature to openly address mistakes or problems. But people are in general happy to do this here because we emphasize the importance of preventing it in the future rather than blaming someone for the current problem”, says the doctor, who is happy living in Thailand. So is his wife, Anna Annerberg who is also the Chairman of the Swedish School Association here.

Seeing ghosts

“Some of my staff are very religious, it does not affect the scientific work, but it is a part of the everyday life in Thailand and also in our department. Some of the staff was seeing a ghost of a deceased staff in the labs and we had to bring in monks to make it go away. I don’t have a problem with this, if this makes people happy, its OK. You have to adapt to the culture to some extent”, says Lindegardh.

Vaccine against Malaria

The doctor tells that a vaccine against Malaria is most wanted but is still not there yet. People working with vaccines are quite positive about a future vaccine but so far success has been moderate. Malaria is a very difficult problem to solve as the parasites has several life stages living in different organs. There are interesting developments in the vaccine research but even in the best case scenario a vaccine is at least 10 years away, according to Lindegardh. The department is working quite close together with experts in Sweden. The doctor finds it rather funny that Malaria research is so strong in Sweden even though that there is no Malaria even close to Sweden. He explains that some professors were very keen in this area and their students took up the research. Lindegardh just returned from a meeting at Karolinska Institute were he gave a lecture about his departments research. It was well received and timely because they just had a traveler who got sick with malaria and got treatment there. “I talked about the importance that some drugs against Malaria should be taken together with food. This disease is seen rarely in Scandinavia so sometimes the clinicians have limited experience on optimum ways of treating it”, says Lindegardh. The Tropical Medicine department also works together with two other Swedish companies to look into a new technology called dried blood spot methodology. Instead of sending blood samples on dry ice from Africa with a courier with the blood spot technology there is hope that blood samples can be send in a letter, if it will work out it will be much faster and much cheaper. This is a very exiting technique which we hope will be ready within 1-2 years.

TSCC - Thai Swedish Chamber of Commerce

When Peter Björk was hired as Director at the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce, his top priority was to stop the financial bleeding.

H

e had to perform a turnaround. ”We now can see, that we will succeed. The figures show that we are making a profit. I am not sure how much, but we will exceed our budget,” says Peter Björk. It has been necessary to cut some costs to meet the budget. One of the important accounts is the Director’s salary which has been downsized significantly. This has been possible as Björk has other income sources than the Chamber. On the revenue side, membership base is up from 92 to 110. “The members we have welcomed this year are mainly new corporate members from various industries. We try to sell memberships where we feel we have a valid value proposition”, says Björk. Also events like the National Day project on the 6th of June had a strong participation from various companies. The Chamber is now looking into some new events like seminars on various topics in order to both assist the members and to create revenue. A seminar about recruitment is planned for Q1 2012.

Property Guide

The recently published Thai Property Guide is also producing a revenue not far from the budget. “A project of such size means a lot of work for all involved but it has been worth doing,” the Director says. The Chamber is now working on the distribution of the book. The property guide targets mainly the Scandinavian organisations in Thailand, but will also be distributed through BOI, TAT

The Turnaround

and embassies and at fairs held in Scandinavia. ”The challenge is the volume of the product. One pack of property guides has a weight of nearly 10 kg so it is expensive to ship from Thailand to Sweden. We have to be creative to find alternative shipping methods.” “We are hoping that the product will recruit new members to the chamber, especially to our new member category, the Property Club. The Property Club is not yet finalized in any detail but will be so before the year end,” says Peter Björk.

20

www.swecham.com

Another important result from our turnaround is the new membership category for students. ”We have a growing and stronger tie with the other Scandinavian chambers which benefits our chamber and we communicate directly to our members through our monthly newsletters and our magazine”, Björk says.

Social sponsored events

“The social events do not add much to the revenue side but gives a lot of benefits for many of our members,”

according to the Director. Securing sponsors for those events is vital, and by now all Huntsman’s Networking events until midsummer are fully sponsored. “Sweden has a new ambassador here in Thailand and we have a positive impression of him so far. He is very eager and willing to cooperate and support the Chamber as much as they can. We are looking forward to explore the opportunities for a stronger relationship between the embassy and the chamber”, Peter Björk says.

SOME THINGS NEVER CHANGE

THE WORLD HAS CHANGED a bit since we started back in 1937. Over the years, we’ve helped nations increase their readiness in a world that constantly poses new challenges for corporations and civil security authorities alike. And we couldn’t have done it without change.

www.saabgroup.com

So we’ve changed technology. And it’s changed us. There’s really just one thing that remains the same. After more than 70 years, we are still challenging the laws of nature and pushing the boundaries of the possible. Some things never change.

I

nitially, the project had several Swedish staff, but currently, it all works just fine with English speaking Thai staff only. “Before we had Swedish-speaking management but now that we don’t the residents are O.K to speak English,” says managing director U-tain Pongprapas. “Even those with limited English still try to communicate and we also have those who can help to translate,” he adds. Most of the members or residents come from Sweden but there are also a few from Norway, Finland and Denmark. The membership association Fenix plans for celebrations such as Lucia and Christmas and having the special bakery Semla prepared. “We’re focusing on Scandinavian traditions that they are used to back home, like the crayfish party. They inform us about when they want us to hold various celebrations,” says the manager. “Each season we do we try to do something different. Lek and I look at places they haven’t been, to offer them different trips,” says U-tain.

Scandinavian Village also tries to bring in a bit of Thai culture, such as Thailand’s cuisine, which is popular on the food menu. “I think everyone blends in quite well. Scandinavian and Thai cultures work well together.” “We do have four Scandinavian-Thai couples,” he adds. Scandinavian Village had its grand opening in November 2003 and 65 apartments out of 96 were sold up to March 2007. Currently, there are 16 unsold apartments. The Swedish owner halted a villa expansion right in time before the global financial downturn erupted in 2008 and the operational side now consists in improving and keeping the village healthy, U-tain Pongprapas explains. The Swedish couple Agneta and Gunnar Kraft are one of the owners of Scandinavian Village. They want to make it clear residents at Scandinavian Village are not just travelling back and fourth as ordinary tourists. They are active, involved and they have established a

www.swecham.com

23

Blissful Life at Scandinavian Village unique community in Bang Saen. “The concept is meant for those having reached a certain age [50+], and being active seniors,” explains member Agneta Kraft. “Everything is so organised, arranged. One goes to the reception and sign up for what one wants to join.” “The warmness here among both staff and residents is what appeals to us.” Agneta Kraft points out as a great advantage that even if someone would become a widow or a widower the fantastic village community is there to rely on for the members. Some even socialize back in Sweden during summertime, says her husband Gunnar. They agree on having found new close friends for life at Scandinavian Village. “We have become like one large family.”

24

www.swecham.com

Each “season” starts with several weeks of warm reunions, where the residents welcome each other back, after having sometimes not seen each other for over six months. At the same time Agneta Kraft points out that one can enjoy privacy. Time for one self is respected. Sitting down at a smaller table in the restaurant is an unspoken sign that one wants to be left alone. Gunnar leads their member association Fenix and is very satisfied with people’s commitment: “It is not hard to get someone to do something here. As Chairman I must allocate tasks and everyone does what they are asked to. There is never any problem at all, and nobody complains but instead one comes up with constructive solutions.” “It’s an active village, but also very

active members, where different people are responsible for different activities, like aqua aerobics, tennis lessons, golf or the planning of activity programmes.” During the big winter holidays, many friends and relatives of the members also arrive on visits. As a membership village no walk-ins are accepted at all and the overnight stay units are in high demand anyway during peak season. Gunnar and Agnetha Kraft think Thailand is better than Sweden but they would not sacrifice the Swedish summer and spend, like the majority of the residents, half the year or more back home. But the raw, humid winter climate in Stockholm is not their cup of tea. Possibly they go home to celebrate Christmas with their children, but not more. Lek at Customer Relations confirms that most members stay at Scandinavian Village between middle of October until mid April. “They still have families back home and want to enjoy that and want to alternate countries for change of scenery. And yet they keep the best part of their home country and Thailand.” After having lived and worked twenty years outside Sweden Agneta and Gunnar started to look around for a retirement home and picked Thailand. “We examined different alternatives and found very few places in the world with a good average temperature during December and January,” Gunnar explains. Spain they find too expensive these days and Florida “too humid”. The same goes for say Phuket in Thailand; they especially picked Scandinavian Village thanks to its location with a dryer climate and some cool winds coming from the north during wintertime. “Then there is the life quality that we could not have back home with this village and such an amount of activities and so many nice people. It would be very difficult to accomplish something like this in Stockholm or Sweden. To have a choice between all these activities and having them at the doorstep.” “We tried this out and became part of the community immediately. During three weeks we had ten invitations to different families who told us everything what one could buy, do etc. Only that is fantastic. So the reception was cordial and it affected us to the extent that we signed on immediately during the trial stay.” “We could see how a ready-made apartment looked like. And we only needed to go to the restaurant in the evening and we felt welcome immediately,” adds Agneta. “The overall feeling is incredibly positive. We never regretted buying here.”

Above all, we provide the unique Thai hospitality that is coming right from the heart of the people, an experience that is hard to find elsewhere. It is our hope that with what Thailand promises, tourists will visit Thailand and return over the years to come. Thailand’s positioning in the Swedish market remains strong and still is a leading long haul destination for winter season. During January - September, 2011, Thailand has welcomed 256,562 Swedish tourists, which is an increase of

10.36%. The Swedish tourists have an average length of stay of 17.55 days and an average spending of 3,690.18 Baht/ head/day. Most of the travelers from the Swedish market are repeaters. In 2010, the number of revisits was 76.79% while first visit accounted for 23.21%. Our strong values that attract the Swedish tourists, according to a number of recent researches, include Thainess, a variety of choices, value for money, beautiful nature, and cultural heritage, and, of course, world-renowned Thai food. In 2012, TAT is planning to promote the following quality markets: • Students: TAT is planning to expand a quality market base and support green products by proposing to students the Thailand Goes Green project aiming to establish ecotourism products, voluntourism, community-based tourism among students. • Group Ad Hoc: This segment can vary from a small corporate that may have a meeting arranged somewhere or a family that wish to celebrate their special occasion together. We are targeting corporate and family of three generations. • Golfers: This is to point out that Thailand can be more than just a tourist destination by combining sports with a holiday. TAT is committed to retaining our strength in the Swedish market. We will continue to deliver our promises to be a destination that offers different quality products and services at affordable prices. We will continue our good relations with the related organizations in order to promote two-way traffic between Thailand and Sweden for the prosperity of the tourism industry of both countries.

TSCC - Thai Swedish Chamber of Commerce

Everything I start, I want the women to continue on their own. My idea is not that I should sit and work in Klong Toey for the rest of my life.

Annika Jonasson has made a difference where ever she has moved as an expat spouse, first in China, now in Thailand. By Steen Poulin Nielsen

A

nnika Jonasson was born, grew up and lived for 40 years in a small village in Sweden. In 2000 she and her husband moved to China and in 2002 they moved to Bangkok. “I was a social worker in Sweden so it was easy for me to find something to do in China. I did some work with street children and their moms. I started to go out to play with the children in an hour or so in the evenings, giving them a break from their begging,” Annika Jonasson recalls. “I found sponsors in Sweden quite easily; old colleagues and friends gave me the chance to buy some clothes and to give the children a shower now and then”, When Annika Jonasson arrived in Bangkok she picked up the Bangkok Guide and called a number to a project in the slum of Klong Toey. She found out that there was a Swedish woman who had started a project in Klong Toey and Annika met her a couple of times, but the woman was more involved in projects in the North of Thailand and is no longer active in Bangkok.

Living in Klong Toey slum

The Klong Toey slum community is home to about 100.000 people, mostly migrants from northern Thailand who have made the trip to Bangkok in search of work. With no legal rights to occupy the land, residents live in constant fear of eviction, while even the most basic amenities like fresh water and electricity

are in short supply. Annika started to help in preschool projects and in a project for disabled persons, the Ban Chivit Mai project. She started to teach English lessons because that was what they wanted her to do. But she felt that her English skills were not very good and she decided to do other things. “I continued to go and visit the people in Klong Toey and people told me that I did so much good for the people there. But I did not. I just came and visited them and talked with them. I did not teach them anything at the beginning, but then some of the young people asked me to teach them some simple English, we did some singing games and stuff like this and they really liked it.” Annika Jonasson then started a knitting cafe and some women from SWEA participated by baking cake in order to sell. “But no one there had any money so they just ate the cake. Then I gave them an oven and told them that they could keep it if they would use it – otherwise I would take it back. They kept it and used it a lot. Two Swedes helped teach them how to bake and now they bake more or less every day,” Annika says. “Some of them learned how to knit and quite a lot of the disabled learned to produce handcrafted products. Everybody in Klong Toey were welcome to join the workshop and especially the mothers of the disabled children were happy about it because they could bring

their children to the workshop; not many other places will accept disabled children,” she adds.

32 Baht for One Days Work

A mother with a disabled child will receive 500 Baht per month from the Thai government if the child is registered as disabled. Otherwise not much is done to help mothers with disabled children. There is a bit of resistance from many Thai people to go to the doctor and get a medical certificate that the child is disabled. It can be shameful for a Thai to have a disabled child. And a fair deal of the women are left by their husbands when having a disabled child, she says. “Everything I start, I want them to continue on their own. My idea is not that I should sit in Klong Toey and knit for the rest of my life; they have to pick it up to help themselves.” Producing handcrafted items gives the mothers to disabled children an opportunity they would not have otherwise. “If you have a disabled child you can not go out and get a job, no one is taking care of your child when you go to work. But if a mother learns to do some handcrafted items she can stay at home and make some money. “One of the mothers were doing paper bags. She was paid 16 Baht for every 100 bags she could produce. On a good day when the disabled child was not too troubled she could make 200 Baht. I told her that she had to stop this, it would take her nowhere. I started to

Helps Klong Toey Women Help Themselves

6000 Hangers and Still Counting

Until now Hang on Hangers has produced about 6000 hangers and still growing. Annika thinks that they might have produced twice that number because it has taken quite a lot time to obtain a quality level consistent enough to sell to costumers. The project needs to be managed as Annika sees that some of the women outsource the work to friends and relatives. But the women are held responsible for the quality. ”I am not really an organization person, I like so much more to work with the people instead of having meetings. Other people does this much better than me. If I need help, I have lots of people who can help me with various things. Not so many people like to be out in the slum like I do. That’s fine, maybe they are better fundraisers than me, then,” she says. “Many people in Klong Toey know me very well and I think that I am respected for my work. Many think I’m working for some of the Christian organizations, because many foreigner are....but I’m not, I’m just there to help on my own,” she says.

They all have a problem

Annika Jonasson would like to ask readers of this magazine that if anyone can carry a bag of hangers to Sweden it will be a great help to the project. think and think and ask my friends and on my blog what to do about it”, says Annika. The products should be good enough to be sold without bringing charity into the aspect. That was when the idea of Hang on Hangers was born, Annika explains.

Hang on hangers

The idea with Hang on Hangers is to wrap fabric around cheap steel hangers. It prevents wet clothes from slipping off a normal slippery hanger. Most people know how irritating that is. And if the fabric to wrap around the hangers are colourful, the hangers both looks nice and unique and the function improves significantly. “My maid and I did the first hangers here on my balcony. I took a few of those hangers and talked to some women in Klong Toey about the idea. It was an instant success. I hooked up with a Thai woman, Khun Moi, who is now the head of the Hang On Hanger project.”

30

www.swecham.com

“Two mothers with disabled children and three young single mothers together with a number of poor women are now producing hangers in their homes when they have time, they meet in the house of the Khun Moi. “Some friends and relatives in different parts of Sweden help us to spread “Häng På” hangers as they are called in Swedish,” Annika explains. The hangers can also be ordered from www.facebook.com/hangpagalgar or www.facebook.com/hangonhangers. On this page, you can also find a short movie about the project. The postage is a challenge. It is very expensive to send the hangers by post. In a 25 kg box, Annika can only put about 10 kg of hangers. “If anybody can carry a bag of hangers with them when they visit Sweden, it will make a great help to our project,” says Annika. Annika tells that it is important now to find out how to develop the project further as it is growing quite fast.

“To be poor and challenged in Sweden can be more difficult than here in Thailand. If you have a drinking problem or other kind of problems you are much more alone in Sweden. Here in Thailand you are more accepted, maybe by the fact that in Klong Toey nearly all families have problems one way or another. Thai’s are better at asking for help compared to Swedes, I think,” says Annika. Apart from Hang On Hangers, Annika has found sponsors in Sweden for various projects. They have build a house for one of the mothers and they pay for the education of some children. “When I turned 50 years old, I told my friends that I did not want any other gifts than money for my projects in Klong Toey. I wanted to support especially the girls who can not go to school because the family does not have money for uniforms and books and then they can not go to school. Some of them leave their family, or they are abandoned by their family, and live in Klong Toey. I wanted to start to work with them. But my Thai language was not good at the time so I did not know how to get started. Now that my Thai language is improved I can work much better,” she says.

Landmark Hotel Celebrates 25 Years

A Lasting Friendship By Rhys Buckler

I

t’s a curious combination but for well over a decade, Swedes have been regular patrons of Bangkok’s longest-standing British pub, The Huntsman Pub. Located in the basement of the Landmark Hotel on Sukhumvit, The Huntsman offers what most British-themed pubs offer; that is, a traditional menu, a variety of local and

imported drinks and most importantly, an atmosphere akin to the isles of Britain. What is strikingly different about The Huntsman is the medley of nationalities, personalities and communities... One of the biggest contingents in the hotchpotch of visitors is the Swedish who have been informally gathering at The Huntsman for nigh on fifteen

years. So much was their enjoyment of evenings past, listening to the live bands and relaxing in cosy Chesterfield booths that the Thai-Swedish Chamber decided on making The Huntsman the venue for formal networking events. And so it came to be that on the first Thursday of every month, the Chamber holds a gathering with up to 60 in attendance. Sponsors are keen to get on board and so the beer is covered; and with The Huntsman preparing the traditional Swedish dish, Pyttipanna, networking events are always a great boost for Swedish business and a much-appreciated chance to mingle with fellow countrymen.

More Than Just Formal

Networking events are however not the only time when The Huntsman is host to the Swedish community. As many Swedes work in the building adjacent to the Landmark Hotel, lunchtimes are another chance to see Swedes once again at the pub. With a large menu and even bigger portions, food is a major draw; coupled with a professional and friendly staff, daily deals and hotel quality throughout, The Huntsman really does provide a welcome change of scenery during the lunch period. So what do the Swedes have to say

about this fascinating partnership? Well, Peter Bjork, executive director of the Thai-Swedish Chamber of Commerce, believes it to be “A great location for everything. One can bring the family and enjoy the superb Sunday roast, or host a large event such as the Chamber regularly does, or even come with a couple of friends for a chat over a pint whilst the band is playing”.

More To Come

In preparation for its 25th birthday, the Landmark Hotel is renovating, replacing and refurbishing many sections but one thing it won’t change is the hospitality and friendliness of its staff and indeed its beloved pub. Hotel manager, Marc Sayer, says “The Landmark has always been a family-run type of hotel. This means guests are treated with a personal touch and are made to feel at home when staying with us”. And to add to the customer-friendly, traditional model of hotels, the Landmark boasts a number of food and beverage outlets. “Being a hotel of this age and character, we have the luxury of having a variety of F&B outlets catering to a wider range of tastes”, says Marc. “Many modern hotels will simply have one restaurant, whereas the

The décor and layout of the pub is fantastic and I would not dream of changing anything inside.

Landmark has everything from Chinese restaurants to British pubs to a trendy lobby bar, not forgetting the best steakhouse in Bangkok, the Rib Room and Bar”. But the hotel renovations and upgrades are not extending as far as The Huntsman. Outlet manager, Rhys Buckler explains; “Since joining the team at the Landmark in July this year, I was amazed to see how iconic the pub is and also what it means to so many people. There really is not much to change,

which is a testament to the previous managers. The décor and layout of the pub is fantastic and I would not dream of changing anything inside”. Rhys continues, “Being a rugby fan, however, I did want to bring some sports to at least part of the pub, and have been fortunate that in front of the pub is a large space perfectly suited for making into a sports area where we show all the live football and rugby, and also F1, tennis and golf”.

Sit Back and Relax

And it is this range in what the hotel offers, its hospitable staff and the comfort of knowing what to expect as a customer that makes it so compelling for locals and expats alike. There is something for everyone…and without doubt, it’s The Huntsman Pub that is a favourite for the Swedish community. So if you’re ever in the area, or in need of a hearty meal and a good pint, why not drop in to The Huntsman, get comfy in a booth and say “God dag, Hej” to a Swede!

Precious Products

Precious Products

Michael Lindblad is the founder, co-owner and managing director of Precious Products Jewelry Co. Ltd. in Bangkok. By Steen Poulin Nielsen

M

ichael Lindblad is not the typical Swedish businessman with a university degree in economics and an MBA in business administration. He does have a university degree, but it is not in economics - it is in psychology. Michael Lindblad grew up in Degerfors in Värmland, Sweden. A quiet place known for its nice nature, a big factory making steel and a well-known football team. From there, he moved to Göteborg where he graduated as a bachelor in Psychology. Michael Lindblad liked the life in Göteborg but he decided that it was not the place for him to stay. He began to travel abroad, to South East Asia, Australia, the Caribbean and the USA. He returned to South East Asia, where he visited different places because of his interest in cultures. His approach was to meet locals, both in Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia. In Borneo he visited local tribes in the jungle, living and working with them. He made a lot of friends when travelling like this, he tells. Then he made the transition into business. ”When I was traveling I always found interesting local items that I could buy and send back to Sweden to be sold. It worked so well that eventually I opened my own jewelry and art shop in Göteborg that I managed for seven years.” “I also started a wholesale company

importing jewelry from Indonesia and Thailand. I had around 3-400 customers at that time and South East Asia took more and more of my time as I had to go here all the time.” “I then met Khun Nok, now my wife, and my brother took care of the business in Sweden before I sold it and moved here permanently,” Michael Lindblad says. In Thailand, Michael at first helped a friend manage a small gold smith plant producing only hand craft jewelry. They employed seven goldsmiths, one stone setter and one polisher. His friend had several shops in Thailand and Michael Lindblad took care of the factory. Michael Lindblad was able to improve some of the traditional working methods and the combination of the best of the two worlds proved to be very beneficial to the competitiveness, Michael Lindblad explains.

Growing big

Precious Products Ltd Partnership was established in 1989 and later transformed into Precious Products Jewelry Co., Ltd. The company is owned by three people, Michael Lindblad, his wife Nok and their son. Precious Products has been located in three different places and has been at the current location for 17 years now. The process of transforming Precious Products from a small scale gold smith to an industrial jewelry factory has been long and interesting, Lindblad tells. ”Today, we produce around 400 kg silver jewelry per month and some gold

and combination jewelry as well. We are doing designs, molds, preproduction tools, casting, stamping. All these things together with finishing, stone setting, plating, - everything.” “We receive an order and the customer tell us that he expects the delivery to be delivered within five weeks. We have more than 50 orders running simultaneously and everything has become very complicated,” says Lindblad. “We are doing about 1500 new models every year for our own collections. On top of this we do molds for other companies,” he adds. ”It is very important for us to keep a very high quality. If our customer orders 100 pieces he can rest assured that he can use 100 pieces and not only 95. I don’t say that we are the cheapest, we are not. We are not that price focused because we are mainly targeting markets with focus on quality,” he says. The company has many Scandinavian customers and Precious Products competes on quality, product development and timely delivery. ”The last year has been very unusual as the metal prices have gone through the roof. I hope that the prices will stabilize because the worst thing is, when no one knows what happens about gold and silver prices. We need more stability,” he says. Precious Products has started to use Italian lamb skin and other materials together with silver and gold as there is a need to do product development with the sky-high metal prices in mind.

Only farang among 300 people Michael Lindblad is the only person in the company who is not a Thai among a little less than 300 people. ”The corporate culture is mainly

Thai. We are in Thailand, not in Sweden. We have to remember that. Before we had foreigners working for us but for the past five years I have been the only one. For me, personally, it has been both good and bad to have foreigners here. I experienced that I had to spend my time taking care of them because they don’t understand how to act here. They don’t have the language skills in order to express themselves in a prober way, it often created problems for themselves. These problems would then eventually land on my desk,” he says. Lindblad has introduced meetings but he is carefully avoiding having too many meetings. There are monthly meetings for both the executives and in the sales department. There are production meetings every second morning and meetings in the personal section. Precious Products has an advanced computer system which is getting better and better keeping track of the orders and production planning, he explains. “I have been working very hard to set up a good system for bonus. If someone does a great job the person will have extra money. For the production worker the system is tied up to the number of items that have passed the quality control. If they make 100 rings, send them to QC who only approves 90, then he has to redo the 10 rings before he is accounted for 100 rings,” Lindblad explains. Precious Products is producing for a few other brands and earlier on in the history of the company they worked for more brands. This goes back to the humble beginning, starting with no money at all. They were unable to work with the Thai banks because no one believed in the company. Therefore they worked for other brands and did not have time to develop

their own brands. This is changing now. But the company is still producing for many famous brands, especially in Scandinavia. “Our customers are everywhere in the world. Precious Products is launching a few more brands now and will introduce them to the market in the next few years.” ”I am only taking care of the Swedish market because in the past I took care of all markets, and I got crazy. Now my wife is responsible for Denmark, Finland and Norway and the staff is doing the rest.” “My sales manager told me the other day that we have more than 80 active customer accounts and I said ´Wow, we used to have around 40´, she replied ´yes, but now you have a very good sales department´”, Lindblad laughs.

It is complicated

According to Lindblad, doing business in Thailand is sometimes complicated, especially when it comes to working with the authorities. ”Maybe we are too small for them, but it is complicated most of the time.

There is a lot of red tape, a lot of requirements. If you make a contract with a bank, you might have to sign 50 documents. The same operation in Sweden would maybe need two documents. We have been working with - well, let’s say “a certain bank” for maybe 15 years. It seems that they have given up assisting us. We asked for their assistance to increase the credit because we needed more cash

to finance our growth. Our credit was much less than our assets but nothing happened,” says Lindblad. After several years of discussion, finally a person came to evaluate the company. ”He arrived and he looked at everything and said `this doesn’t match´ and agreed to increase our credit. He asked me if I was OK if he doubled the credit. I said yes.” Then nothing happened. One year passed. Nothing happened. Two years passed, nothing happened. We had to change bank and we got the double credit from day one,” Michael Lindblad says. Lindblad tells that he had tried from the beginning to do everything right according to Thai standard. Precious Products is located in an industrial village in Bangkok and according to Lindblad some of them might not have the required industrial license. It means that they will have problems all the time with the authorities. Precious Products had the 2nd Industrial Licence which is now upgraded to the 4th Industrial License. Lindblad tells that he needs to build something safe for both owners and for all staff and that the company has made huge investments in having everything in order. ”Our business is not depending on Thailand as our customers are spread around 35 countries but we started here and invested a lot of money here and it is not a bad place to run a manufacturing business. We have talked about this matter many times. Maybe to start something in Cambodia but we have decided to stay here. It would be a lot of work to start up in another country and I am getting older. We have been working like crazy for many years and we stay here”, the managing director says.

The future

”One thing that could be very interesting to do is to start a jewelry chain store here in Thailand. This is the future but I don’t have people enough to support me setting up pilot shops and develop the concept. We do have one shop though, in Koh Samui because my wife is from the island. We have a lot of friends and relatives and it makes sense to have a shop there.” “The Thai middle class will grow significantly in the next 5 to 10 years, I think. In the long run it will mean that it will be more and more expensive to produce but people will have more money to spend. The retailers will benefit from this. This is the future”,

says Lindblad adding: ”When I was a kid there were a lot of garment factories in Sweden, they are collapsed and gone now. But there are still retailers selling clothes.”

Dropped the BOI

Precious Products worked with the BOI for about two years. Lindblad explains that they terminated the cooperation with the BOI because he found it too complicated. ”We were required to put up some stock systems according to a certain standard. We did it and they came and inspected it and told us, that we had to do it over again as some requirement had changed. This happened a couple of times and I could not spend any more time doing this as I had a company to manage.” “Our auditor and our lawyer could not meet the changing demands from BOI either so I decided to leave the program. We enjoyed the benefits by importing machines without tax and things like that but finally we found that it was too complicated. Maybe we were too small for this. Some companies come here with many millions, I guess it makes it a bit easier to work with the BOI,” Michael Lindblad adds. Last year, Precious Products turnover was about 70% up on 2009 and in the region of a couple of hundred of million Baht, which Lindblad believes is a very good result for a company starting from scratch. ”Last year we had 300 people working, now we are 270 due to the volatile metal market, but if – hopefully – the situation will stabilize I trust that we will be around the 300 staff again next year,” Michael Lindblad says. Michael Lindblad is fully integrated in the Thai society. He is not a part of the expat community and most of his friends are Thais. He swims, plays golf and is a member of several Thai business networks. He is now in the process of becoming a Thai citizen. ”I am required to take a Thai name. For last name, it is easy; I will take my wife’s last name. The first name is more difficult, but I think that I will go for ‘Mai Sak’, the Thai name for teak wood,” says Lindblad.
