Dedicated to the balance of urban design and nature. Architecture should create a harmonious relationship with people and nature, allowing the two to coexist together. Understanding that the places we design shape how people think and live so that should play a crucial role in how we design small spaces as well as large regional planning.

Previous Work: Student Intern - Falk Architects Winter 2020 - 2021 Work included collaborating with professional designers, mocking up revit models for project manager, rendering, designing brochure mock ups for a client, schematic housing design, and team collaboration meetings.

Skills learned: Learning the client’s perspective in the field of design, understanding budgeting, furthering Revit knowledge, and project timelines.

Senior Life Guard - Shawnee County Aquatic Center Summer 2018 - 2021 Work included managing younger life guards, working with patrons with needs, managing the facilities needs, and implementing goals for a safe environment.

01 Douglas Park Aquatic Center Architecture Year 4

Located in Manhattan KS, a proposal for an aquatic center was designed to bring a neighborhood together and give local swimmers a new home after the closing of the Kansas State Natitorium. Subtle materiality and architecture form allows this building to fit into the context and become a beacon of safety at night.

The facility provides the community a competition swimming pool, warm up pool, and a dive well. As well as locker rooms for male, female, and private universal lockers for families and non-binary individuals. There is also community rooms in the facility to all people to gather for meetings, birthday parties, and teams to meet before competition. The design goal was to not only create a safe facility for the swimmers but to allow a walkable activity for everyone in the neighborhood.

Entrance Elevation Douglas Park is located off of Fort Riley Blvd and 9th street in Manhattan Kansas.

It is home to a couple local amenities like the Douglas School House, which is a historic building preserved for future generations. The School house has community based classes like yoga and night schooling for adults. It is also used by the two churches across the street.

The site also has outdoor amenities like

a playground, basketball court, and a shade structure. The final building on site is the new Douglas Rec Facility currently being built by the city. Housing an indoor gym, basketball, volleyball, pickle-ball and other athletic activities will be held here. With these great amenities and the great residential context around the site, I chose this site as a potential site for the new aquatic facility for Manhattan Kansas.

Students are working closely with the Manhattan Parks and Rec to pick and choose sites, design elements, and overall the best way to design an aquatic center that best fits the wants and needs of local residents, college swimmers, high school swimmers, club teams, and utmost young children learning how to swim.

02 Manhattan Culinary Center Architecture Year 4

Located in Manhattan KS, a proposal for an culinary center was designed to bring a neighborhood together and give students the knowledge about how to plant and cook for themselves. Protecting local communities and family food production is vital for preserving biodiversity, eradicating hunger, improving health, ensuring food security, maintaining rural (and urban) livelihoods, managing natural resources and protecting the environment. There are many ways to incorporate design into this field of life. Teaching kids the value of farming and the many techniques will help them build a strong foundational understanding and teach their siblings and parents.

A Culinary Center would give them the opportunity to do so.

03 Mount Mitchell Cultural Center Bowman Competition Finalist Architecture Year 3

Located just outside Wamego, KS at the base of Mount Mitchell, a proposal for an interpretive center was designed to encourage visitors to learn about the areas history. A focal point for history to many in the area, this small landmark was used as a trail marker for people going out West. An interpretive center was to be designed at the base, including an auditorium, museum, and event space. Not only an Architectural project but the exterior space was highly developed as the pathways around the building upgraded many of the exisiting trails. Lastly, the building’s entrance facade includes materials like limestone and wood to fit the contextual properties of the site. The goal of this design was to give focus to the history of Mount Mitchell and design an environment that encourages visitors to come to the area.

The Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie Park has been accessible to the public throughout the year for decades, however, nothing beyond a simple information kiosk is currently available to inform and guide the visitor before they embark on the more than 2 ½ miles of trails that concentrically bound the hill and reach the summit. While the kiosk has sufficed, the organizations involved seek

a permanent Interpretive Center to provide information and the serve as a forum for the interpretation of the site’s rich cultural history and natural environment while also providing facilities for administration and further protection of the Prairie.

The approximately 8,000 square foot Interpretive Center will serve as a portal through which one is introduced to the intertwined natural geological, ecological,

scenic, and cultural attributes of the prairie, hill, and memorials. There will be exhibition and other programmed spaces that will serve as a transitional experience between the visitors’ arrival and experience.

04 Re-envisioning Warner Park ASLA Merit Award Architecture Year 3

Located in Manhattan KS, re envisioned Warner Park creates a more environmental friendly and walkable park for the city of Manhattan and the neighborhoods that surround this park. The addition elements include a visitor center located on the South-West corner.

This building will increase the stay for park-goers as it adds bathrooms, air conditioned lobby, help center, and classrooms for kids to learn about the Kansas Flint Hills. The paths were updated to crushed limestone and gravel mixture to decrease rain run off. The pond and prairies were conserved and taken care of. Finally the 9-hole disc golf course was updated, a hammock grove was added, and two bridges were added to help people get across the valley. The goal for this design was the update the current amenities and add a visitor center to encourage more people to come out to the most underrated park in Manhattan.

The park is a well preserved natural space but it needs improvements to reach its potential. Expedition: Warner outlines several proposals for Warner Park that are based around 3 actions: Discover, Adventure, and Connect. Each of these words directly relates to creating a memorable park experience and a stronger relationship between the park and the city. The Goal for the revision of Warner

Park is to create a holistic experience at the park for users to DISCOVER the natural environment, get involved in active ADVENTURE, and CONNECT with the neighboring community. Warner contains a wealth of natural beauty rarely found around Manhattan. Expedition: Warner seeks to uncover these gems and provide access to all users. Warner provides an incredible backdrop for a variety of

adventurous activities. Whether it be recreational kite-flying or an educational nature walk, Expedition: Warner facilitates collaborative programs and encourages independent adventure. CONNECT joins Warner Park with the community, creating an environment.

05 Hand Sketches and Model Making Architecture Year 2 - 5

Collection of models and hand sketches throughout school. The models include a section model of the Hong Kong Shanghai Bank Headquarters, Oak Park Library, and the Bowman Finalist Mount Mitchell Interpretive Center. The techniques included in these models are hand cutting, laser cutting, 3D printing, and the use of power tools in the fabrication lab. The hand sketches below include schematic sketches for the Interpretive Center design and then personal hand drawings that were displayed at art shows in NOTO Arts District in Topeka Kansas.

06 Working Master Thesis Project: Sprawling Potential Architecture Year 5

The suburban houses are simply designed for the single family households. The United States have millions of families but it only makes up 29% of all households in America.

Single parent households make up 12%, other family members and roommates make up 21%, adults above 18 living with their parents make up 17%, and people living alone make up 10%.9 The typical 2,500 sqf house is too big and sometimes too small for many families.

It is clear that the American Demographic is not completely fitting the single family dominant model anymore and is also not cheering on high rise development as the answer.

There seems to be a missing middle model that is the answer. Duplexes, Courtyard Apartments, Townhouses, and Lowrise Mixed Use buildings are all viable options for people to easily obtain an affordable place to live. The goal of these homes to create a sustainable, affordable, attainable, and comfortable place to live for all kinds of household types in the United States. So the question becomes, can there be a suburban block that is designed to create the opportunities for any household type to efficiently fit into a house?

Before and After Master Plan To many, a small business is simply based on the number of employees at an individual business location rather than the total number of employees of a company that may own those businesses.

According to the Census Bureau 2018 County Business Patterns survey, more than half (54%) of all employer businesses in 2018 had fewer than five employees but they s only accounted for 5.5% of total employment in all industries.It should be quick to note that the definition small business is considerably larger than the idea most people have.

Small businesses to the public are closely

tied to local businesses and companies that have fewer than 15 employees. The question becomes, should there be a more categories of small businesses?

Micro businesses? Non employer? Start up? Established small businesses? There are different needs and desires for different sizes of small businesses and it should be designed in the archetype to better lay a successful foundation for these businesses.

Diverse Small Business Types

Conceptual Master Plan After the critique and analysis it was evident that the neighborhood model discussed in exercise two and small business models could both benefit from each other. The ADU archetype was created in the previous exercise two and could be furthered into an ABU archetype or an Accessible Business Unit. There is potential for varying sizes from a single unit to multiple units creating a small business center in the core of the neighborhood. This means that the varying sizes of small businesses would relate to

varying sizes of ABU’s. A start up or micro business would relate better to a detached ABU, whereas an established small business coffee shop could be housed in a grouped ABU unit and a few employees could rent some of the units above. The goal for these ABU’s was to fit into both of the critiques made in this book, the Missing Middle Critique and the Small Business Critique.

They would create a more affordable space for small business owners to live and work.

One of the goals for the re-envisioned master

plan was to allow for flexibility when it comes to household sizes, lawn sizes, garage sizes but also public spaces. In the plan above there is a park on the north side. This is not the only option for the blocks. There can be a block filled with just houses, larger housing complexes like duplexes, quadplexes, or mix use buildings.

Conceptual Detached ABU Elevation The site located for this project is located in a suburb right outside Portland Oregon. This area of the United States has seen a large influx because it the growing economy, job opportunities, and general likeness of the area. Portland grows at a rate of 0..59% annually and its population has increased 13.49% since the last census in 2010. Happy Valley is no longer the farming trade post is once was. A growing single family dominant suburb with groupings of strip malls lends to the typical car dominant suburb. The

neighborhoods are lined with expensive single family houses and smaller lawns.

There is great opportunity to try and bring a new idea for a suburban block because of the already developing area. The Scouter’s Mountain Development (left) is located at the top of the ridge while the Rock Creek Development is at the base of the ridge next to commercial development and west of a large neighborhood. These two sites are potential areas to design a new suburb block with ABUs and ADUs. There are newly

developed roads and pathways in these neighborhoods to connect the sites back to existing roads ways. In the spring there will be a more in depth analysis of the sites in the spring.
