Project: Noguchi Lamp Exhibit Tasked with designing the interior of an exhibit space that houses an artist’s pieces. The design should be influenced by the architectural connection to the user and the art piece. There should be a clear indication of design influenced by the artist and how the creates his work. The artist chosen for this specific project is the Japanese natural light due to the lamps illuminating the space.

Project: Mount Mitchell Interpretive Center The Mount Mitchell Heritage Prairie Park has been accessible to the public throughout the year for decades, however, nothing beyond a simple information kiosk is currently available to inform and guide the visitor before they embark on the more than 2 ½ miles of trails that concentrically bound the hill and reach the summit. While the kiosk has
sufficed, the organizations involved seek a permanent Interpretive Center to provide information and the serve as a forum for the interpretation of the site’s rich cultural history and natural environment while also providing facilities for administration and further protection of the Prairie. The approximately 8,000 square foot Interpretive
Center will serve as a portal through which one is introduced to the intertwined natural geological, ecological, scenic, and cultural attributes of the prairie, hill, and memorials. There will be exhibition and other programmed spaces that will serve as a transitional experience between the visitors’ arrival and experience.

Project: Structural Innovation Understanding that Glass Bricks can be used as a structural system and the uniqueness of the Louvre facade’s helped construct a hybrid of the two. Many iterations of mixing glass bricks and the Louvre’s facade happened like cutting bricks to fit into the rhombus steel frame system or stacking bricks in a rhombus shape. However, in order to be built, practical, and functional, the glass bricks
needed to be structural and somehow hang the lourve glass facade off of that. So a proposed idea includes building up the vertical structure using glass brick columns.
Wherever the middle of the steel frame crosses the brick columns there is a prefabricated metal piece that has a metal attachment to the facade. This would most like be on-site connection through welding so that the workers can builds from crowd up by one story at a time. In order to achieve full stability the glass facade would need to laterally stabilized. By using the cable
connections, the facade could use tension to create a strong lateral rigidness. So alike the Louvre Museum, there are steel poles mounted at the X joints on the frame. From here the poles are about a foot long and line up with the vertical columns. A similar steal connection piece connects cables in a rhombus shape so that from the front of the building they are not
visible. It was important to keep some characteristics from both the Louvre and Glass Bricks, like the fact that the bricks should be structural. However, it was also important in the design process to keep the outer facade as smooth as possible.

Project: Warner Park Revision The park is a well preserved natural space but it needs improvements to reach its potential. Expedition: Warner outlines several proposals for Warner Park that are based around 3 actions: Discover, Adventure, and Connect. Each of these words directly relates to creating a memorable park experience and a stronger relationship between the park and the city. The Goal for the
revision of Warner Park is to create a holistic experience at the park for users to DISCOVER the natural environment, get involved in active ADVENTURE, and CONNECT with the neighboring community. Warner contains a wealth of natural beauty rarely found around Manhattan. Expedition: Warner seeks to uncover these gems and provide access to all users. Warner provides
an incredible backdrop for a variety of adventurous activities. Whether it be recreational kite-flying or an educational nature walk, Expedition: Warner facilitates collaborative programs and encourages independent adventure. CONNECT joins Warner Park with the community, creating an environment.

Project: Oak Park Library The City of Oak Park Public Library Board has decided to build a branch library at an open lot at 106 South Oak Park Avenue in order to create a modern space that equipped with the latest technology, new reading elements, and community spaces. This idea creates a space that should balance a modern and traditional library. By understanding the clear goals from the OPPLB and the site
analysis, it is clear that the library should not only have a modern technology and well designed readings spaces but also a CONNECTION TO PLACE. This concept is driven off of the site analysis. The site has a direct connection to Oak Park Avenue, a busy street with several shops, cafes, and other businesses. On the east side of the site is a residential neighborhood.

On the east side of the site is a residential neighborhood. So the proposed library’s goal is to design a space that has a direct connection with both. Programmatically this placed space the Adult and community spaces
on the west side and the Children and Youth spaces on the west side. Ultimately allowing all age groups to feel a sense of connection to this library. Bridging off from the initial concept, Connection to Place,the forms started off simple and direct. The first iteration, see left, is a good understanding of simply facing a space towards the place it wants to interact with. However, using
the site efficiently this was not applicable. Reshaping the program and spaces created a the last iteration. From a birds eye view, the shape has 3 linear rooms, each at different levels, stretching east and west. The shape has two different main spaces, the north building and the southern building. The north is brown due to its stereotomic qualities and large use of wood.
Breaking away from the common material use, brick, creates a unique connection to Oak Park. Aesthetically, the building stands out with a large use of wood. However, wood and concrete are used to lighten the interior atmosphere, which envelopes the user when they’re searching for books, talking to one another, or simple reading. The southern facade is largely made up of steel and
glass that lets the southern sun to enter the building. The wood coffering lightens up the afternoon sun and casts shadows onto the concrete floors and users allowing for a balance of light.
