Director’s Note

The 2023-2024 school year is Sunrise Christian Academy's 40th birthday, but this year also marks 30 years of the SCA Drama Program. Started by Mr. David Fitzgerald in 1993, the drama program has definitely grown since the first production. I have been at Sunrise since I was in 4th grade, and it truly is like a family to me. I was on stage with Sunrise Drama starting in 7th grade when a temporary stage was set up in the New Gym for the production of Our Town directed by Mr. Fitzgerald in 1995. 1995. After graduating high school at Sunrise and moving on to Sterling College to study Theatre, I was honored to return to Sunrise as Drama Director from 2002-2008.

After taking 10 years off of theatre, I came back in 2018 for my second round of Directing. It has been my privilege to grow the drama department by having Student Directors help with shows beginning in 2018 and even by training Victoria VanDellen as an Intern Drama Director last year in 2022. This year, Laelle Strong has joined me to start that training as well. Over the years, I have loved having many alumni come back to help with productions both on stage with acting and choreography as well as offstage with tech and orchestra. The roots go very deep here at Sunrise, and it is very exciting to watch the drama department grow to form deeper and deeper roots!

I love pouring my heart and soul into these students and seeing their talents and gifts expand into mature actors and actresses. I am continually impressed with these young men and women and their desire to use these gifts to bring honor and glory to God.

So much organization goes into putting on a production this size and it takes the talents and gifts of so many students, parents, faculty, staff and alumni to make this happen. Thank you to everyone for all of the work and love you have poured into this drama department over the years. To God be the glory! Great things HE has done!

Show Synopsis

Based on the classic film, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is an authentic piece of Americana, a timetested romantic comedy with a special, contemporary relevance. Bringing the raucous Oregon frontier from the screen to the stage, it is a crowd-pleasing hit that has audiences cheering from the opening scene to the curtain call. Saddle up for a joyride in this tale of stubborn men and cunning women.

The men in question are Adam and his six unruly brothers who think they know what a woman ' s place is and how to keep her there. It takes Milly, Adam's spirited new wife, and six other savvy women to show them who's the boss.

As a film, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers delighted audiences with its whirlwind romances, memorable songs, and iconic choreography, and this energetic and adventurous staged version does the same. With its large ensemble, the show is perfect for community theatres and university and college productions that want to showcase a wide range of talent and guarantee everyone a starring moment.

A Special Note from Mr. Fitzgerald

Congratulations to SCA for a significant milestone in celebrating 40 years as a Christian school. The SCA drama program began as a drama class in the fall of 1993. The first staged production that year was called The Clown’s Christmas Party, and was held in the auditorium. It was viewed only by the student body as an assembly. There was nowhere else to stage the production. Modest as its’ beginning was, the program grew to include both fall and spring middle school and high school productions. Students outside the drama class were now able to audition as well. The first BIG staged SCA production was the dramatic play Our Town. It was performed in the ‘ new gym ’ in the spring of 1995. The evening included a dinner, the spring choir concert, and the thenannual spring speech class video presentation It was a long evening but rewarding.

Over the early years, drama presentations were performed in the auditorium, new gym, old gym, and finally the new Sunrise Performance Center (SPC) that was completed in the spring of 1999. Students were thrilled to have a new ‘home’ for drama. Choir, band and other K-12 performances were held there as well. Since that time and for various other reasons, the ‘ new ’ SPC was repurposed to become the school’s cafeteria

Drama at SCA has now become a successful staple of the school and has since become a recognized award-winning program. It first achieved that status in 2002, which was my last year. The Jesters’ Award program was a city-wide event begun in the spring of 2002 SCA took home two awards that inaugural year for best costuming and best supporting actress. It was during my last year and final spring production that we staged Singin’ in the Rain in the SPC. The set included a semi-circular thrust stage and orchestra pit. I was so proud of the students for their dedication and hard work.

On a personal note, I was honored and grateful to be a part of SCA from 1989 through 2002. Three of my six grown children graduated from SCA. I will forever be indebted to Rob Lindsted, faculty, staff, and countless students for giving me the blessing of being an early part of the school’s 40-year history.

Blessings for another 40 years at SCA.
