Crealdé School of Art is a communitybased nonprofit organization established in 1975. We feature an affordable, sequential curriculum of more than 125 studio courses and workshops taught by professional artist instructors in Painting & Drawing, Photography, Ceramics, Sculpture, Fiber Arts, Glass and Jewelry for adults and children, with hands-on experience emphasized. There are five 8-week sessions per year, plus Summer ArtCamp and Young Adult Immersion.

Hannibal Square Heritage Center, Crealdé’s second campus, represents a partnership with the City of Winter Park, and pays tribute to the past, present and future contributions of Winter Park’s African American community through an awardwinning permanent collection of historic photographs and oral histories. Established

by Crealdé in 2007, the center also features visiting visual art exhibitions and educational programs that explore Southern folklore and cultural preservation.

In addition, Crealdé offers an award-winning scholarship and outreach program to diverse communities in Central Florida.

The Jessie Brock Community Center serves as Crealdé’s third Central Florida teaching site. Since 2010, Crealdé has partnered with the City of Winter Garden to offer a series of photography, painting, drawing, sculpture and ceramics classes for adults and children.

Calendar Of Exhibitions & Events Free & Open to the Public Storytellers XVIII: See Through Our Eyes On display now through January 4, 2020 African American Museum of the Arts 325 South Clara Avenue, DeLand, FL 32721 Storytellers XVIII focuses on the historic African American community in DeLand, including the Spring Hill neighborhood. This project represents a partnership between the African American Museum of the Arts in DeLand, the Greater Union Life Center in DeLand, and Crealdé School of Art. Project creator and Crealdé Executive Director Peter Schreyer mentored and instructed the students in visual and narrative storytelling using traditional film-based photography. Students witnessed the restoration of the historic Wright Building, former home of the Deland Mercantile Association, which was founded by local businessman J.W. Wright 1921, and is a focal point for historic preservation in the students’ community. The program included photo walks through the neighborhood and field trips to the art studios and galleries at Crealdé and the Hannibal Square Heritage Center where they learned about the educational power of collecting oral histories and photographs within your own community.

Since 1996, the Crealdé Storytellers Teen Documentary Photography Program has given photography instruction to students ages 13 to 17, providing the opportunity for self-expression while exploring the heritage of their community. From urban Orlando to suburban Apopka to rural Geneva, teens have completed 17 photographic documentaries to date, all of which are available to travel. The exhibition will also be on display in Winter Park at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center from June 2–August 1, 2020.

Director’s Choice VIII January 11–April 25 OPENING RECEPTION: Saturday, Jan. 11, 5–8pm Crealdé Main Campus Showalter Hughes Community Gallery This exhibition, organized by Crealdé Curator of Exhibitions, Barbara Tiffany, features the recent work of artists from Crealdé’s diverse faculty, including artists long associated with the school as well as new additions. Media include painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture, and jewelry.

For more than 40 years, Crealdé’s faculty of more than 50 working artists has represented some of Central Florida’s most influential arts educators and accomplished artists. This year’s featured artists are Noreen Coup, Tom Sadler, Barbara Tiffany, Vince Sansone, Belinda Glennon, Jesus Minguez, David Cumbie, Stefan Alexandres, Sherri Bunye, John Baker, and Chris Casler.

Refund/Withdrawal Policies In order to maintain the quality of our programs, we have set a minimum number of students for our classes. Therefore, the following policies have been put in place for refunds, transfers, and withdrawals.

CLASSES: A transfer, withdrawal, refund or credit must be requested 7 days prior to the first class meeting by contacting the main office at 407-671-1886 during business hours or email lmcbryde@crealde.org. Requests made less than 7 days before the first class meeting are not eligible. Class credits expire after one year. These policies apply regardless of attendance status.

WORKSHOPS: All workshop registration deadlines are at least one week prior to the workshop date.

Registration deadlines for visiting artists workshops will vary. If withdrawal is made prior to registration deadline, student is eligible for a full refund. No refunds or credits will be made after the workshop registration deadline.

18th Unity Heritage Festival and Hannibal Square Open House Sunday and Monday, January 19–20 Hannibal Square Heritage Center This annual City of Winter Park festival celebrates the life of Dr. Martin Luther King J. and promotes family heritage. The free festival begins on Sunday from 1 to 5pm, in Shady Park across from the Hannibal Square Heritage Center in Winter Park. Sunday entertainment features music by local gospel bands and Monday includes a special program honoring Dr. King with ongoing musical artists. Special activities include children’s games, career booths, as well as retail and local food vendors. The Hannibal Square Heritage Center offers extended hours during the festival for visitors to learn about the history of Hannibal Square and enjoy the visiting exhibitions.

Power, Myth And Memory in Africana Art: Select Pieces from the CJ Williams Collection January 31–May 16 OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, January 31 7–8:30pm, Alice and William Jenkins Gallery and 8–10pm, Hannibal Square Heritage Center Visiting Exhibition Gallery PANEL DISCUSSION: Sunday, February 23, 2pm, with collector Charley Williams, Curator Kristin Congdon, and Curatorial Advisor and Haitian artist Patrick Noze Power, Myth, and Memory in Africana Art is a partnership exhibition with other Orange County arts organizations that aim to commemorate the one hundred year anniversary of the 1920 Ocoee Massacre. The works displayed will demonstrate how artists of African descent have found power and resilience in a racially unjust world.

Charley Williams’ Winter Park-based collection spans the twentieth century and moves into the twentyfirst. Because it focuses on African, Haitian, and African American art, it provides audiences with the opportunity to explore pan-African ideas that manifest themselves into the lives of three different places.

Included are works by Sister Gertrude Morgan, Clementine Hunter, David Butler, Ransom McCormick, Roy David Annisey, and Nellie Mae Rowe, as well as historic African masks, chairs, and fertility objects.

These artists lift themselves up through faith, pride, and traditional practices thereby establishing diverse ways of transcending subjugation and finding strength.

9th Annual Free Family Festival March 7, 2020, 10am–2pm Crealdé Main Campus Crealdé’s popular open house is a day of free fun, art, and play on Crealdé School of Art’s lakeside campus. Children enjoy pony rides, face painting, and bounce house fun in the midst of the Contemporary Sculpture Garden and can choose from a wide selection of hands-on art workshops, including pleinair pastel painting in the garden facing Lake Sterling, darkroom photography, clay animal sculpting, and printmaking. Families have the opportunity to see all the studios, meet Crealdé’s professional art faculty, and register for classes.

11th Annual Hannibal Square Heritage Center Folk & Urban Art Festival Saturday, April 25, 10am–4pm Hannibal Square Heritage Center This free festival celebrates Central Florida’s richly diverse culture through artwork, educational entertainment, and music, featuring the works of more than 25 folk and educational artisans.

Previous performers included dancers from the African Kulcha School, blind vocal performer Daniel Miles, the Guerilla Dancer storyteller, drumming by Mexican folklorist David Penaflor, and the Porchdogs Cajun and Zydeco Band. Previous children’s workshops included a Puerto Rican Vejigante mask making and parade and Japanese writing and origami workshop. A soul food truck offers refreshments and ethnic food.

Students will explore various materials, recipes and techniques for making and finishing papier-mâché sculpture, with emphasis given to the advantages and quirks of the medium. Beginning students will learn the basic techniques for construction with guided projects, while returning students will continue to explore the media with projects of their own.

Instructor: Alyssa Foxson Winter: Saturday, March 21, 12–3pm Spring: Saturday, May 16, 12–3pm Location: Studio 7 Skill Level: All Macramé is a form of textile that uses knotting techniques and comes from the 13th century weavers’ word for “fringe.” This fiber art form was popular in the 60s and 70s and now it’s back and as popular as ever. Join artist Alyssa Foxson, and embrace your inner boho goddess. Learn all the basic macramé knots needed to make a macramé wall hanging and beyond. All supplies are included and you will leave this workshop with a beautiful wall hanging ready for display.

Learn the concepts for basic and advanced jewelry fabrication. In this class, students will become familiar with essential silversmithing skills and methods of cutting, forging, embossing and all the fundamentals of soldering techniques. Students will be given the instruction and tools to make finger rings, earrings, bracelets and other forms of jewelry.

Copper materials will be provided for use in class.

Students wanting to work in silver should bring their own supply.

Art of Stained Glass

Students are introduced to glass cutting, pattern making, copper foiling and soldering techniques. No prior stained glass experience is needed.

Through instructorled demonstrations and step-by-step instructions, each participant will create a traditional bezel and permanent setting for a cabochon stone.

Participants will learn to design and the precision techniques necessary to make a series of small-scale samples for sculptural jewelry. This course will include equipment safety, design, material preparation, and design execution.

Create dimensional forms out of flat copper sheets without molds or stamps. Note: this class is fairly physically intensive, and calls for nimble dexterity and significant manual strength.

Fused Glass 101: Kiln-Formed Glass

Instructor: Robert Lennox Winter: Saturday, January 4, 10am–2pm Spring: Saturday, May 30, 10am–2pm Location: Studio 7 Skill Level: All Enter the cutting-edge world of fused glass.

Students learn studio glass techniques including cutting, fusing, annealing, slumping and more.

Safety in the studio will also be covered. A portable computer-controlled kiln engineered for glass is provided so that students may gain experience loading and firing a kiln. Students will design and fabricate two pieces: a jewelry pendant to wear, and a fused glass suncatcher. Beginners will gain a variety of new studio skills while more advanced students with stained glass experience will learn how to break free of lead lines!

Students create wax sculptures that will be cast in bronze, learn how to prepare the wax form for casting and learn the ceramic shell mold-making process.

David will be using the latest mold-making materials available and students will be able to witness a bronze pour at the end of the class. The cost includes the casting of one five pound bronze. Additional material fee will be charged for larger bronzes.

Learn to make a wide range of knife styles like survival knives, daggers, and Qama knives using titanium and steel. Explore a variety of techniques such as forging the blades, shaping, heat treatment, sharpening, riveting, polishing, and handle making.

Create whimsical figures and abstract welded sculptures. Learn basic cutting and arc welding techniques using found objects and mild steel.

Students are encouraged to bring in objects for their compositions. All tools and supplies will be provided.

Intermediate and advanced students are assisted with ideas related to their personal projects. Problemsolving and discovering new materials and techniques will be a part of each class. Bronze casting and welding will be offered with instructor approval.

WKS17 Instructor: Lynn Brenner-Katz Winter: Sat. & Sun., February 22 & 23, 10am–4pm Spring: Sat. & Sun., April 18 & 19, 10am–4pm Location: Studio 6 Skill Level: All The goal of this workshop is to develop quick observational skills while sculpting in water-based clay to create animals. Students are encouraged to “see the over-all shapes” of their animals, while capturing the general character, or movements the animals may exhibit. All supplies are provided.

Learn the fundamental process for traditional blacksmithing. Students will use the hammer to forge hot steel on the anvil and learn how to make door handles, hooks, and ornamental scrolls. Practice techniques such as flattening, upsetting, twisting, punching, and drawing. Become familiar with the blacksmith forge. All materials included. Note: this class is fairly physically intensive, and calls for nimble dexterity and significant manual strength.

WKS5 Instructor: David Cumbie Spring: Sat.–Sunday, April 18 & 19, 10am–4pm, and Sunday, April 26, 3–6pm Spring: Sat.–Sunday, May 23 & 24, 10am–4pm, and Sunday, May 31, 3–6pm Location: Studio 6 Skill Level: All An introduction to a variety of techniques in the creation of wax sculptures. Once the wax sculpture are made, students prepare their waxes with gates and sprues in preparation for the ceramic mold-making process. Waxes are coated with state of the art ceramic shell and then the wax will be burned out and the molten bronze poured into the molds. *The cost includes a five pound bronze sculpture, with the option to purchased additional material for large works.

Instructor: Sandro Pelicié Perez Winter: Sat. & Sun., January 25 & 26, 10am–4pm Winter: Sat. & Sun., Feb. 22 & 23, 10am–4pm Location: Foundry Skill Level: Intermediate Through an interactive, collaborative learning process, students create a concrete sculpture with a durable surface for outdoor art. The process starts by carving the initial form into a large piece of Styrofoam, using a small maquette as a reference. Students then apply cement directly to the surface of the form. The artwork will be finished using colorful stains and sealers. This collaborative piece will go on display in Crealdé’s Contemporary Sculpture Garden.

Basics of Industrial Welding

Instructor: Angel Bayron Winter: January 25 & 26, 10am–4pm Winter: February 22 & 23, 10am–4pm Location: Foundry Skill Level: All Students will cover the basics using arch welding, mig and TIG machines. This class gives an overview of how to operate the machines and why certain welding machines are used for certain projects. Equipment, safety, and technique will be demonstrated along with student participation in creating a sculpture for Crealdé’s sculpture garden. All materials will be supplied.

Instructor: David Cumbie Spring: April 4 & 5, 10am–4pm Spring: May 16 & 17, 10am–4pm Location: Studio 6 Skill Level: All In this workshop, professional sculptor David Cumbie guides students as they create life-size busts. Students learn techniques for capturing accurate proportions of the head and a variety of facial features during this intensive, two-day workshop. Clay available for purchase in class.

Explore the potter’s wheel and create animated pots by altering thrown forms beyond round. Dart, pleat, fold and facet! Just because it’s made on a wheel doesn’t mean it has to be round.

In this workshop, you will learn how to create an acrylic painting by using sketching and brush techniques that establish movement in your artwork.

We will also add glazes to the acrylic to create an acrylic paint that allows your work to dry more slowly.

Ceramics with Found Objects

Clay teapots can be functional, ornamental, sculptural; fantastical…it’s up to your imagination to decide just what sort of teapot you fancy. And once you create it, think of all the parties you can host with it, either with real refreshments or make believe. It all depends on you and the teapot of your dreams!

The soothing sound of trickling water can make a room or patio into an oasis of tranquility.

We’ll create unique fountains that reflect your inner yearnings for peaceful contemplation.

Escape is only a workshop away!

Create nature-inspired ceramics with wheel thrown or hand built forms. Create functional pots and sculptural garden art. Give new life to organic objects as they influence form, decoration and glazing choices.

Impressionism with an Edge WG/PD151

Through in-depth assignments, field trips and reviews, students delve deeper into composition, lighting and special equipment. Demonstrations on manipulating images for printing and posting online are included.

Prerequisite: Digital Photo I or similar experience.

Create bold, bright and beautiful contemporary landscapes with a palette knife. For beginners who are intimidated to try with a brush and intermediate artists wanting to loosen up their painting styles.

Focus on composition, values, color mixing and paint application. Fun, freeing and fabulous! Students will work from instructor’s travel photos and en Plein Air.

Cold wax medium is a malleable paste of beeswax, odorless mineral spirits, and resin. It mixes with oil paint to create depth and intrigue in your paintings. We’ll experiment with mark-making, using solvents, scrapping back layers to reveal previous layers, texturing and using additives to enhance your paintings while developing your own style.

Experience the magic of the potter’s wheel as you shape a ball of clay into pottery. Trim and embellish them with handbuilding to create pots for serving or decorative sculptures. Food is more delicious in a bowl you made yourself!

Develop skills for measuring proportions and angles, drawing tones to show light and volume, perspective and composition. The goal is to learn techniques to draw realistically and develop perceptual awareness.

Celebrate the wonders of spring! Use hand-building techniques to create nature inspired pottery and whimsical art for the garden. Embellish with glaze and fire for purpose and beauty.

Learn basic techniques and methods used in a representational oil painting by developing skills of observing, rendering, color matching, and applying paint through practice. Demonstrations and discussions will emphasize the importance of composition, shapes, edges, brushwork, and ways to manipulate the value and intensity of color.

9th Annual Free Family Festival March 7, 2020, 10am–2pm Crealdé Main Campus Pony rides, face painting, and bounce house fun for children in addition to hands-on art workshops, including plein-air pastel painting, darkroom photography, clay animal sculpting, and printmaking. Families can tour the studios, meet Crealdé’s faculty, and register for classes.
