Hannibal Square Heritage Center, Crealdé’s second campus, represents a partnership with the City of Winter Park, and pays tribute to the past, present and future contributions of Winter Park’s African-American community through an award-winning permanent collection of historic photographs and oral histories. Established by Crealdé in 2007, the center also features visiting visual art exhibitions and educational programs that explore Southern folklore and cultural preservation.

Hannibal Square Heritage Center is located in downtown Winter Park, 642 W. New England Ave., Winter Park, FL, 32789. The galleries are open noon–4 p.m. Tuesday–Thursday, noon–5 p.m. Friday and 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Saturday. Phone 407-539-2680.

Since 2010, Crealdé has partnered with the City of Winter Garden to offer a series of photography, painting, drawing, sculpture and ceramics classes for adults and children at the Jessie Brock Community Center, which serves as Crealdé’s third Central Florida teaching site.

Crealdé School of Art is a community-based nonprofit organization established in 1975. We feature an affordable, sequential curriculum of more than 125 studio courses and workshops in Painting & Drawing, Photography, Ceramics, Sculpture, Fiber Arts, Glass and Jewelry for adults and children, with hands-on experience emphasized. There are five 8-week sessions per year, plus Summer ArtCamp.

In addition, Crealdé offers an award-winning scholarship and outreach program to diverse communities in Central Florida. The two galleries on the main campus present a changing variety of multidisciplinary visual art exhibitions by artists from Florida, the nation and the world. The Contemporary Sculpture Garden overlooking Lake Sterling features more than 60 pieces of original art. Admission to the galleries and gardens is always free.

Storytellers 17 takes place in the historic African-American West Side community of New Smyrna Beach. The project represents a partnership between Crealdé School of Art and the Mary S. Harrell Black Heritage Museum, housed in the former St. Rita Colored Catholic Mission Church, built in 1899 in New Smyrna Beach. Until schools were integrated in the 1960s, the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orlando served the West Side with a church, one of the first school for black children in Volusia County and a health clinic.

8th Annual Night of Fire, January 12 Kids activities 5-6:30 pm; Live music 6 -8 pm

The whole campus comes alive after dark for the 8th Annual Night of Fire. Tour the Crealdé studios and galleries, participate in art workshops and demonstrations including a gas kiln firing, torch-cut welding, Raku firing and a light painting photography display over Lake Sterling. There will be painting demonstrations in the studios, too. Enjoy live music, refreshments and storytelling around the fire, and tour the opening exhibit, HAND IN HAND: THE CREATIVE WORKS OF JANVIER MILLER AND GUSTAF MILLER. Suggested donation of $5.

38TH ANNUAL CUP-A-THON August 10 – 11, 2018 Showalter Hughes Community Gallery

For nearly four decades, this summer social hosted by Vincent Sansone, Ceramics Studio & Program Manager, brings smart shoppers and collectors to the main campus to socialize and browse through hundreds of one-of-a-kind ceramic cups, bowls and other vessels handmade by Crealdé instructors, artists, students and friends. As the tradition goes, “buy a cup and it will be filled.” Proceeds are used to upgrade the ceramics studio and kilns. 7-10 p.m. Friday, August 10 and Saturday, August 11.

36TH SUMMER ARTCAMP STUDENT EXHIBITION August 18 – September 15, 2018 Showalter Hughes Community Gallery

Since 1982, Crealdé has presented an annual exhibition featuring works of art from the 400-plus Summer ArtCamp participants, ages 4 to 17. The exhibition includes collaborative and individual works in painting, drawing, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture and photography. It is curated by Crealdé’s Summer ArtCamp faculty. The opening reception is from 5-7 p.m. Saturday, August 18.

NEW WORKS FROM CREALDE’S EMERGING ARTISTS PROGRAMS: CERAMICS, SCULPTURE AND PHOTOGRAPHY September 28, 2018 – December 29, 2018 Showalter Hughes Community Gallery

Emerging artists from Crealdé’s Ceramics, Sculpture and Photography programs share their talent and demonstrate diverse techniques in work produced during their fellowships. In this new exhibition, emerging artists from Crealdé’s Photography, Ceramics and Sculpture programs share recent works in a variety of media.

The Crealdé Fellowship Program, since 1978, and the Studio Artist Program, since 1996, have mentored an average of 25 students per year through this work-study exchange, with many becoming professional exhibiting artists. The exhibition curated by Barbara Tiffany will also include the work of the 2017 and 2018 Cheryl Bogdanowitsch Sculpture Scholarship recipient. The opening reception will take place from 7-9 pm Friday, September 28.

VIBRANT VISION: AFRICAN DIASPORA AND AFRICAN AMERICAN ARTISTS’ WORKS FROM THE JONATHAN GREEN AND RICHARD WEEDMAN COLLECTION September 14, 2018 – January 12, 2019 Alice & William Jenkins Gallery Heritage Center Visiting Exhibition Gallery

The Jonathan Green and Richard Weedman international art collection, “Vibrant Vision,” includes paintings, sculptures and prints from outstanding WPA-era African Diaspora and African American artists. The 26-piece selection in this exhibit reflects themes of work, love, belonging and spirituality. With outstanding African American artists such as Clementine Hunter, Elizabeth Catlett, Hale Woodruff, Romare Howard Bearden and more, these works of art of range from the late 1930s to the present and represent artists throughout the Caribbean and United States. The range of artists offers a deep look into diverse cultural influences that have shaped American art over the past hundred years.

Join us September 14 at the opening event which begins with a 7–8:30 pm reception at the Crealdé’s main campus, including a brief gallery talk by the collector Jonathon Green. The event will continue at the Hannibal Square Heritage Center from 8–10 pm, also including a gallery talk by Jonathon Green and featuring live music - Lubamba African Spectacular.

HAND IN HAND: THE CREATIVE WORKS OF JANVIER MILLER AND GUSTAF MILLER January 12 – April 27 Opening reception: Saturday, January 12, during the Annual Night of Fire Event, 5 – 8 pm Showalter Hughes Community Gallery

This artistic duo met at Syracuse University and then studied in Rome, Italy, each with a lifelong love of creating works of art. The exhibition will feature their most recent paintings, sculpture, and ceramics. Sharing a home studio in Vero Beach, Florida, or Stonington, Connecticut, Janvier and Gustaf support each other’s efforts through collaboration, critiques, and problem solving and exhibit annually at over 12 locations along the Eastern Seaboard. Instructor: Elaine Person Fall I: Saturday, November 3, 9 am-2 pm, Studio 3 Perhaps you have written a traditional resumé, but what about an artist resumé? A resume for an artist is different from other types.

You need to convey relevant descriptions of exhibits, grants, training, background, and awards (if any) within the confines of a single page.

This workshop will help you choose the important points of your creative life and how to avoid unnecessary information. Each student will leave this workshop with a professional and current artist resume. Skill level: All. WORKSHOP

Instructor: Geoffry Sprague Fall II: Thursdays, 1:30-3:30 pm, 6 weeks, Studio 7 Papier-mâché has been used for millennia to create ornamental and functional objects. Explore various Geoffry Sprague, Self-Portrait of materials, recipes, and techniques for Artist as a Frog, papier mache making and finishing papier-mâché sculpture with emphasis given to the advantages and quirks of the medium. Although this class has no prerequisites, prior sculpting experience is helpful. Skill level: All Members $170 • Non-Members $190

FA108 Thread Painting: Reeling Design

Instructor: Hye Shin Fall I: Wednesdays, 10 am-12 pm, 6 weeks, Studio 7 In this project students will be introduced to simple reeling techniques with various kinds of yarns to experiHye Shin, thread painting ment with colors and design composition. They will learn how to blend the threads to make the color gradation. Using blended wefts will give them twice as many steps in their gradation making the transition smoother and more subtle. Students will create abstract wall hangings by those threaded cardboard stripes. Skill level: All Members $180 • Non-Members $200

Lauren Austin, Bottletree, photo memory quilt

Instructor: Lauren Austin Date/time: TBA, Heritage Center In this workshop, participants will use family photos, memorabilia and keepsakes to develop their own stories as inspiration to create unique art quilts. They will transfer family photos, their own drawings, and writings directly to fabric using computer/inkjet transfer. Students will learn Lauren’s quick quilt/no piecing method to construct their own art quilts. Bring old letters, family photos, fabric, threads, special books and any artifacts you would like to incorporate into your quilt. Buttons, ribbons, shells, jewelry and other embellishments are also suggested to personalize your family’s future heirloom. Quilting experience not required. Some sewing machine experience, helpful but not required. There are other methods of attachment such as glue sticks, staples, and hand sewing. This class has no rules other than to have fun!

Lauren Austin has been designing and making quilts for over 30 years. Prior to turning to art and art education full time, Lauren worked as a US diplomat in Latin America, as a human rights and civil rights lawyer and as a legal writing professor at Syracuse University School of Law. Lauren was the Community Artist in Residence at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida until 2009. She then lived in China for 5 years, working on quilts, learning Chinese and providing art demonstrations and workshops to area community groups and schools before returning to the US.

Students will be given the instruction and tools to make finger rings, earrings, bracelets and other forms of jewelry. Copper copper materials will be provided for use in class. Students wanting to work in silver should bring their own supply. Skill level: All Members $260 • Non-Members $280

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres Monday, October 8, 12 pm-5 pm, Studio 7 Cold connections and riveting can be creatively applied to metalsmithing, mixed media, found objects and jewelry. It’s an easy way to marry different kinds of materials together, like wood to metal or plastic. No soldering or gluing is required with this method.

WKJ05 Odd-Shaped Bezel Stone Setting

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres Sunday, October 14, 12 pm-5 pm, Studio 7 Learn to fabricate irregular-shaped bezels to match odd-shaped stones for jewelry, as well as the process of permanently setting stone to the bezel. This precision stone-setting technique is applicable for any raw-shaped stones, crystals, or other materials like seashells, glass pieces, or liquid resin. Through instructor-led demonstrations and step-by-step instructions, each participant will create a traditional bezel and permanent setting for a cabochon stone. WKJ22 Metal Folding and Forming

Instructor: Stefan Alexandres Monday, October 15, 12 pm-5 pm, Studio 7 Explore metal folding and forming as a unique process for jewelry-making. Participants will learn to design and the precision techniques necessary to make a series of small-scale samples for sculptural jewelry. This course will include equipment safety, design, material preparation, design execution. Create dimensional forms out of flat copper sheets without molds or stamps.

Robert Lennox, fused glass

Instructor: Robert Lennox Fall I: Saturday, October 6, 10 am-2 pm, Studio 7 Fall II: Saturday, December 15, 10 am-2 pm, Studio 7 Winter: Saturday, January 12, 10 am-2 pm, Studio 7 Here is your opportunity to enter the cutting-edge world of fused glass! In this one-day workshop, students will learn studio glass techniques including cutting, fusing, annealing, slumping and more. Safety in the studio will also be covered. Instructor Robert Lennox provides a portable computer-controlled kiln engineered for glass so that students may gain experience loading and firing a kiln.

Students will design and fabricate two pieces: a jewelry pendant to wear, and a fused glass sun-catcher. Beginners will gain a variety of new studio skills while more advanced students with stained glass experience will learn how to break free of lead lines! All materials provided. Instructor: Stefan Alexandres Fall II: Tuesdays, 3 pm-5 pm, 8 weeks, Foundry Experiment with unconventional materials such as light bulbs, old tools, toys, photographs, and other found objects and assemble by incorporating rivets, wires, screws, staples, nails, thread, glue and plastic ties. Instructor: Stefan Alexandres Fall I: Wednesdays, 1 pm-4 pm, 6 weeks, Studio 6 Come explore the ancient craft of Repousse! Using a combination of primitive and more modernized tools, Repousse students learn to create metal relief sculptures without molds. Through demonstrations and hands-on instruction, students will experiment with a variety of metalsmithing techniques using small hammers and hand-made punches. In the end, students walk away having created their own relief sculpture in copper, developed their own skills to work in metal relief sculpture, and a taste for the endless design possibilities of Repousse. Students will use the hammer to forge hot steel on the anvil and learn how to make handles, small knives, hooks, and ornamental scrolls. Practice techniques such as flattening, upsetting, twisting, punching, drawing and familiarity with the blacksmith forge. All materials included. Instructor: Sandro Pelicié Perez Fall I: October 27 & 28, 9 am-4 pm, Foundry Fall II: November 17 & 18, 9 am-4 pm, Foundry Through an interactive and collaborative learning process, students will create a concrete sculpture with a durable surface for outdoor art.

The process is begun by carving the initial form into a large piece of Styrofoam, using a small maquette as a reference. Students will then apply cement directly to the surface of the form. The artwork will be finished using colorful stains and sealers. This collaborative piece will go on display in Crealdé’s Contemporary Sculpture Garden.

Pictorial dynamic will be emphasized with movement explored as the key tool; color movement (having the color evolve from warm to cool across the canvas), value movement (building the light up to a climax), and design movement (harmonizing negative and positive spaces). There will be demonstrations and one-on-one instruction utilizing the principles laid out in Kreutz’s popular book Oil Painting Essentials.
