Director’s Choice IV

Grady Kimsey: The Mind’s Eye

This one-person exhibition of paintings and sculptures will celebrate the work of one of Central Florida’s most accomplished artists and popular art educators. Grady Kimsey inspired thousands of students, including some of Central Florida’s most recognized artists. His national exhibition record spans nearly six decades and his work is in the collection of some of the country’s top art museums, including the Smithsonian in Washington D.C. Henry Sinn, Crealdé’s Director of Painting & Drawing, will curate this exhibition. Come meet the artist at our opening reception at Crealdé’s Alice & William Jenkins Gallery, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, January 17.

One Place: Paul Kwilecki and Four Decades of Photographs from Decatur County, Georgia

In conjunction with the Night of Fire, Crealdé’s winter open house, there will be an opening reception on Saturday, January 11 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. for Director’s Choice IV. The exhibition recognizes Crealdé’s four year partnership with the City of Winter Garden at the Jessie Brock Community Center and features the faculty artists who make this program a success: Beatrice Athanas, Patricia Byron, Prayong Deeying, Belinda Glennon, Cathy Hempel, Mark Lepow, Trish O’Donnell, Peter Schreyer, and Michael van Gelder.

The Road to Memphis: Documentary Photography by Rick Lang

The last body of work produced by the late Rick Lang, former Photography Department Director and longtime senior faculty member, features black and white images from western Tennessee and Mississippi around the city of Memphis.

This documentary series of social landscapes, illustrating contemporary culture through everyday scenes, represents his 12th and final photographic exploration of the American South.

Opening reception held in conjunction with One Place in the adjoining Jenkins Gallery, 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, April 4.

Purvis Young: Urban Expressionist First baptism in Mt. Zuma’s new pool, 1982 by Paul Kwilecki

This two-venue exhibition of silver prints spans Georgia photographer Paul Kwilecki’s (1928-2009) artistic career and is on loan from the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University. Curator Tom Rankin says, “While Paul ranks among the most important documentary photographers of the 20th century, he is also one of the least well known.” Said Kwilecki, “I don’t make pictures to decorate walls; I make them to shed light in dark corners.” Opening reception and gallery talk Friday April 4, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the Jenkins Gallery followed by a live blues reception at the Heritage Center from 8:30 to 10:00 p.m.

Miami resident Purvis Young, 1943-2010, was an African American artist who commented on the state of his community through his artwork. Using discarded plywood and other debris, he created art that speaks about the present day lives of black people. A selection of his paintings and books will be on loan from Volusia County art collector Lisa Stone. The opening event begins Friday, January 24, with a panel discussion from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Mt. Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, followed by a reception with live jazz from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the Heritage Center.

Showalter Hughes Community Gallery Celebrating the art of Crealdé’s community

Recognizing established artists from Florida, the nation, and beyond

Crealdé School of Art is a community-based non-profit art organization established in 1975, featuring an affordable, sequential curriculum of over 100 studio courses and workshops in painting, drawing, photography, ceramics, sculpture and related media for adults and children, with hands-on experience emphasized. Also, Crealdé offers an award-winning scholarship and outreach program to special populations from the diverse Central Florida community. Our two galleries offer changing multi-disciplinary visual art exhibitions by artists from Florida, the nation, and the world. Crealdé’s contemporary sculpture garden showcases over 60 outdoor pieces of art. A limited number of classes are held at the Jessie Brock Community Center in Winter Garden.

Generation to Generation: A Film Photography Workshop (Ages 8 & up)

Join the wave of people re-discovering the world of film-based, black and white photography.

Participants will work with a funky, 120 professional format camera, photographing the beautiful Crealdé campus and learn to process and print their pictures in one day. Work in Crealdé’s pristine, completely renovated darkroom. Fee includes film, paper, chemistry and a HOLGA, a plastic camera that has achieved cult-like status worldwide. The instructor, a professional documentary photographer, will be assisted by his nine year old daughter, who has worked with black and white film for the past year and a half.

Miniature Garden Art (Youth 8-14) Instructor: Paula Davis Sundays, April 6 & 13, 1:00–4:00 p.m. Studio 7 Welcome Spring with a Lilliputian-sized garden decorated with tiny birdbaths, benches, mushrooms, and even a small cottage. Studio 6 Explore a variety of mold making techniques in creating small sculpture works. Students will create molds out of clay, plaster, low temperature wax, alginate, and latex. All materials are included in the cost of the class.

You’ll learn the basics of Case Bound, Coptic, and Stab stitch (Japanese style) on hard cover books. Make your own personalized journals, sketchbooks, albums and more! You can use your handmade papers that you created in paper making class. Learn how to create hand bound books to make the perfect customized gift!

TD178 The Art of Papermaking

Instructor: Hye Shin Winter/Spring Tuesday, 10:00 a.m.–12 noon Heritage Center Learn the basics of papermaking using recycled paper, rose petals, onion skins, sewing scraps, junk mail, etc… Students will use mold and deckle techniques to make their own unique paper. Molding, paper sculpture and basic book binding techniques will be taught. Make your own cards and envelopes & 2D and 3D paper art.

TD182 The Art of Fabric Collage

Instructor: Hye Shin Winter/Spring Thursday, 10:00 a.m.–12 noon Heritage Center This class is based on traditional quilting and sewing to develop a visual language using scraps of fabric, appliqué, threads and beads. Students will create printed fabrics of their own design using an ink jet printer. This class is for all levels. A sewing machine is preferred for faster progress. Students’ unique visions will be realized through their choice of embellishments.
